Words from the Chairman - Carl Heslop
Following the disappointing end to the season last year with just missing out on the Play offs it was inevitable that PJ would ring the changes.
After a full review of the season, it was clear that we had to recruit better professionals off the court and higher performing athletes on it. This set the tone for recruitment and PJ set about finding players who would raise the level and work ethic on and off the court and from what I have experienced he has done just that.
Seeing players turn up for training early, work hard and drive each other on is very encouraging and I know they will want to perform for the fans today. Since arriving in Plymouth each and every player has been extremely professional, and it is a stark contrast to last season which we are hoping can be transferred onto the court.
A few familiar faces have remained in the form of Elvisi, Jules and Joe Hart making a playing comeback to the roster this season. It will be emotional for joe as I know how much it means to him to be playing again this season and to have the opportunity to run out at the Pavilions again. Hopefully he will get some minutes and
bask in the roar at the pavilions which I’m sure will come when he takes, the floor. Elvisi remains as our club captain this season and along with Jules we are looking for them to show the players the ropes. Roles are slightly different this season and all three of our retained roster will need to work hard to play their way into a starting spot.
Our campaign has opened with a disappointing performance against Bristol where I believe we really missed Mason who did well last week despite not being fully fit from illness. The performance against Leicester was vastly improved and we should have come away with a victory. However unforced errors cost us along with some lapses in concentration and we need to cut those out of our game today.
After two away games I know the players are really looking forward to playing in front of their own fans and really put on a show.
It seems like an age since we were back at the pavilions and I’m sure you will show all our new players what an atmosphere this arena can generate and make them feel right at home.

Good evening, welcome to the Pavilions for our first home games of the 2023-24 British Basketball League season. Today we host the Manchester Giants follow by the Sheffield Sharks on Sunday.
After a disappointing end to the 2022-23 season, it was important that we identified the reasons why and made sure that we put ourselves in a better position as a team to be more competitive for this re-formatted campaign.
After reflecting on the season and looking at the personnel on the team, the decision was made to revamp the whole squad and only retain two players from that playing roster in Elvis Dusha and Jules Akodo. Fan favourite Rashad Hassan ruled himself out by announcing to the club he was not interested in returning for 2023-24 season.
Joe Hart would be returning to playing duties since his injury and this weekend will be his first competitive games for a year and it’s a real positive for the team to have Joe back on court.
Knowing what we needed to do, a lot of time effort and research went into putting this season’s squad together and I’m very pleased with what I’ve seen to this point. I have been impressed with the work ethic and commitment of putting in the hard work that we are going to need to keep us healthy and competitive this season.
We were not able to have the pre-season that we would have liked having only playing one preseason game and this showed against Bristol Flyers
in our first game. We looked a little off the pass and clearly still getting used to playing together as a unit and executing a playing system that for most of the team was new.
We had a much-improved performance against Leicester Riders in our second game, and I came away disappointed with the loss, but happy with the way we played and competed. The improvements shown from the week before was excellent. We lead for a large part of the game and going into the fourth quarter, but lost our way a little and didn’t close the game out. The positive thing is that we were more than competitive and the mistakes we made were of our own doing and are within our control to change.
We have some great talent in the squad this season and I’m sure as you get to know them you will see that they are also great people as well. It’s going to be a long season the important thing for us to make our home court a fortress and a difficult place for the opposition to come and play. You, the best supporters in the British Basketball League will play a big part in making this a reality, so keep it loud and proud!
I extend a warm welcome to the Manchester and Sheffield’s coaching staff, players, and supporters for these British Basketball League championship games.

The Plymouth City Patriots tipped off their 2023/24 British Basketball League campaign Friday night in Bristol, but didn’t get the start they wanted.
The South West Derby, which has consistently excited fans across the nation, took place at SGS Arena in Bristol on Friday night, with the home team Flyers taking the victory 82-65. The game started off as a competitive affair, with the new look Patriots impressing the mass of travelling Plymouth fans early on, with fluid play and good shot selection. Both teams were missing players due to injury, but regardless, the early going seemed fast paced and relatively even on the court. However, towards the end of the first quarter the home team found another gear and pulled out to a six point lead. The Flyers momentum continued into the second quarter and by halftime, their lead was stretched to fourteen points, not to mention holding the Patriots to just ten points for the entire quarter.
In the third quarter with the game threatening to be a blow out the Flyers turned the screw once more and stretched their lead to twenty five points, putting the game out of the Patriots reach. The visitors did rally in the final quarter, but it was too little too late for the Plymouth side, who managed to close the gap to seventeen points at the final buzzer.
Coach Paul James was somewhat philosophical after the game, saying “It wasn’t the start to the season we wanted, but it’s game one and we’ve got plenty of things to work out.” Coach James also added, “we’ve got to take the positives out of this game, but more importantly look to adjust and be better and more consistent moving forward.”
The Patriots will be on the road again this weekend, taking on former BBL champions the Leicester Riders, Friday night at the Morningside Arena. The traveling Patriots fans will no doubt head to Leicester en masse with a hope that the early setback will quickly be a thing of the past.
A 17-2 burst from the Phoenix stretching for the first six minutes of the third put the visitors up 5338 and despite Brandon connecting from deep, Cheshire were in control heading into the fourth. Plymouth were only down by ten points in the fourth and had their chance. However, a 7-0 start by Cheshire put that plan on ice, as the Patriots could not recover.
