Words from the Chairman - Carl Heslop
What a weekend of nail-biting action with the patriots and some of the most exciting entertainment we have seen in the city. The games last weekend were massive for the club where we needed to keep daylight between the teams below us and also stop a run of losses which we did with some great performances against teams who were desperate to take two points off us.
Newcastle came and played unbelievably physical on Sunday to try and unsettle us and the way we dealt with it was really professional. I saw first-hand the treatment being administered to the players after the game and they really fought for that performance. In the past I feel that the team would have been littered with technicals and maybe wouldn’t have got this over the line due to it being so tight but more professionalism under pressure makes a big difference.
A big positive from the games where we looked better as a combined unit and played as a team, spreading points across the roster and being led by the senior pros in Ty, Deuce and Elvisi. Building that chemistry is so important and we made some difficult decisions earlier in the
week to put the team first. Ty is now showing his quality and with two MVP performances he is showing the way and the levels we want from this team.
With the release of Jawaun Daniels, we have moved quickly with the player deadline looming to bring in Ralph Bissainthe who will bring an offensive threat and strengthen our depth as we close out the season. With a window of nongames over the next two weeks it’s a perfect time to integrate him whilst preparing for London on the 12th of March
Although releasing Jawaun was a club decision, the release of Markedric Bell was unexpected and something we really didn’t want to have to do. However, following calls with his family direct it was evident he would be best placed to return home and we felt it was important to put his welfare first. This is a family club and bell has become a key part in that family since sept and we just want the very best for him in this difficult time. Personally, the release of Bell is difficult as I have seen the strong bond he has formed with the fans, the community, my family in particular and I know there will be many a tear on his farewell game today.

Good afternoon and welcome to the Pavilions for today’s BBL championship game against Manchester Giants. The giants are coached Vince Macaulay, assisted by Nigel Lloyd.
Coach Macaulay has put together an extremely talented team, which sees them sitting 5th in the BBL Championship now with a 12-11.
They have plenty of BBL talent and experience in their roster with the likes of William Lee, Nick Lewis, Corey Johnson, Callum Jones, Dirk Williams, Legend Robertin and Rahmon Fletcher, all of whom have played in the BBL previously.
Last week, we had the perfect weekend in terms of what we needed as a team in relation to our league position and solidifying that as well as creating a little separation from those teams who sit currently below us in the league table.
I was really pleased with the way we showed great composer in both games and especially in the overtime periods where we executed very well at both ends of the floor. Two very solid team performances, so I hope we can continue in this form.
It is going to be a little harder now that we are going to be without Bell after this game. He has been great around the club on and off the court. I believe Bell has a very high ceiling if he chooses to really get after it. He has provided us many highlights this season and he will be missed.
I have been looking at potential replacement players as the season is far from over and we need to try and make sure that we stay in the running for a playoff position.
If we can achieve this goal after all the turmoil, we have had this season, we would have all done an amazing job, including you, our brilliant supporters! Today, Manchester is a team that love to play an up-tempo fast game, the faster the better for them. We will need to be excellent again in our transition defence today and try and control the tempo of the game.
I extend a warm welcome to the Manchester coaching staff and players for this BBL championship match.

The Plymouth City Patriots were in action over the weekend and took part in two dramatic overtime thrillers.
The Patriots form coming into this weekend has not been great. Eight consecutive losses meant that two wins over rival teams, currently below the Patriots in the league, would be essential. An away trip to Surrey would be the first challenge, a team that has had its own struggles this season, but a team non the less that were hungry for a win in front of their home crowd. A home crowd that would be challenged from the opening tip off by over a hundred traveling Patriots fans.
Things did not start well for the visitors, as the Scorchers took an early lead and despite the Patriots constantly fighting back, the home side took a 5 point advantage into the half time interval. The visitors made short work of their opponents slender lead and took the lead going into the fourth quarter, behind a seven point barrage from their newest signing, Ty Gadsden.
The fourth proved to be an epic battle with last ditch heroics from Surrey’s Josh Steel, who iced a three to send the game to overtime, despite 7 consecutive points from Elvisi Dusha the team captain, leading by example. In overtime the Patriots rallied and took full control of the game and in an all round team effort finished worthy winners, 105-95.
The Patriots would head back to Plymouth with a valuable win under their belt, ready to take on Newcastle Eagles in another must win game at Pavilions, Sunday afternoon. The home fans were once again out in force and boisterous from the opening tip, boosting their team to an early advantage, which they would ultimately improve on, taking a 9 point lead into half time. In the third quarter, it was relatively level pegging, but the fourth saw an epic comeback from the gutsy Eagles, who would ultimately tie the game with under two seconds on the clock and send it to another overtime thriller.
Once again the Patriots found another gear and their big three of Gadsden, Dusha and Rashad Hassan poured in a combined 14 points in overtime to take the win, 98-93 with one final punctuation from Hassan, who threw down a dunk in the final seconds. Hassan also hit the 4k club, scoring over 4000 league points in his 7th BBL season.
Ty Gadsden, man of the hour, was awarded two game MVPs for Friday and Sundays matchups, totalling 60 points over both games and was complementary of the teams performance, saying “Both performances were big team wins. I know I got the MVPs but I wouldn’t have done that without the confidence of my teammates and coach Paul James. Also shout-out to Joe [Hart], but really the whole team were MVPs.”
Match report by Pablo Cheeks
Coach Paul James, who’s been under some scrutiny from a minority of Plymouth fans, was upbeat after the victory, saying “A win for both teams was very important. We’re not guaranteed a Playoff spot and as a result these games were fiercely contested. Surrey and Newcastle are solid teams, both have had struggles with players in and out, like ourselves, but with another full house in Pavilions and traveling fans to Surrey, they pushed us to two wins.” He continued to praise the fans, adding “They’re really special… As long as we play hard and they can see we’re playing hard for each other, they turn up and support… They are the best fans in the country and we wanted to get two wins for them as much as anything.”
How do you choose the right people to create your brand, conceive your next ad campaign, or design packaging for your new product? There are numerous agencies and freelancers in the Plymouth area alone, many producing strong creative work. Clearly, you need to check their portfolios and fees. But, crucially, you also need to know how they work and why they design the way they do.
Great design is as much about function, as it is about being beautiful. My approach is to understand your plans, assess the challenges you may face, and find effective solutions to realise your goals. Whatever the job, I aim to produce design that increases recognition in your target audience, tells your story and prompts customers to choose you over your competition.
Just speak to my clients and see what they have to say.
