BUSINESS PROFILE - ORIGINAL STYLE For over 30 years Original Style has been manufacturing tiles using a combination of raw materials, traditional techniques and a skilled and dedicated workforce. They have a broad range of products, from hand decorated wall tiles, contemporary large format tiles and geometric style Victorian Floor Tiles.
B
ased in Exeter the company was originally set up in 1986. It was launched to create tile sets for the cast iron fireplaces that sister company Stovax produced. When it became apparent that tiles were being used for areas other than fireplaces, particularly in the USA where they were being used on the walls of luxury bathrooms, Original Style created a thinner range of authentic Victorian designs on thinner tiles more suited to walls. The first Original Style Tile showroom was opened in Exeter in 1996 followed by the second showroom in Plympton in 2001. As well as a recently launched showroom in Cheltenham Original Style tiles are also sold through a network of independent retailers who have been selected based on a mutual pursuit for high standards and a passion for tiles. Henry Brook, Head of Retail Stores at Original Style explains more about the company’s development ‘In the 1900s, a Victorian Floor Tile collection was developed to complement the ever popular wall tile range. The production department was expanded and in-house glazing and hand painting sections were set up. North America became such an important marketplace that we opened our own distribution centre in Boston.”
The shop in Exeter was so successful that Original Style opened a second shop in Plympton “our original showroom in Exeter was set up in 1996 to offer our second quality products and clearance items. The shop was so successful we opened another retail store in Plymouth 5 years later.” All three Original Style showrooms still stock and sell seconds but also materials and accessories for all tiling projects as well as huge choice of high quality wall and floor tiles and mosaics in glass, stone, ceramic and porcelain, all suitable for residential locations, and most of them can be used in commercial settings too. In 1997 Original Style acquired the Winchester Tile Company, adding hand crafted, transparent glazed tiles and mouldings to its growing product portfolio. This led to slip casting and wet clay pressing equipment as well as more kilns to the production department.
“
“
Keeping up to date with home interior trends is a key focus for Original Style
range of products on offer. Henry added “we want our clients to feel completely at home, even in the largest and brightest of spaces. We try to support them by ensuring that they are able to visualise their own space, as it will look in the end when the tiles are installed.” “Adding to that we now offer a 3D experience using the newest technology, so that once the patterns and colours are picked, our ViSoft technician can show the customer what their room will look like in a rendered version. Not everyone is a designer or has sufficient imagination – we understand that completely.” Supplying a large network of retailers and having three showrooms, the brand does not lack ambition, with plans to expand its outlet even further. New showrooms help local retailers who can send customers from the area to see the tiles in real life without having to display thousands of products in a limited space themselves.
This is reflected throughout the company’s showrooms with carefully selected on trend products on display to inspire customers. Designs that are achievable and realistic are also displayed whilst showcasing the many possibilities that are available from the wide
Henry concluded: “Our showrooms have been very successful and we would love to build on this by opening more stores in the future. We like to pick our locations carefully, taking into consideration a number of different factors, especially ways in which our dealer network can benefit from our presence in chosen markets.”

A HANDMADE MOTHERS DAY
Mothers day is fast approaching (Sunday 26th March if you needed a reminder!) As everyone flocks to the shops frantically grabbing cards and chocolates, perhaps take some time to consider something a little more personal for the woman who does it all..
M
others day doesn’t have to be generic. Why not consider something a little more personal to give on that special day. Granted it might take a little bit more time than buying something on the high street, but the effort will all be worth it when you hand over your gift. Flowers perish, and we all know chocolates don’t hang around for long, so why not do your research and take the time to make something truly handmade.
Don’t Underestimate The Mason Jar First off, you need to find something to contain your home made gift. Mason Jars- our favourite country staple, are the most versatile object for anything personalised. You can practically turn them into whatever you want, and they are perfect for creating cute little beauty products. You can add ribbons, add little stickers with use by dates, tie on brown paper gift tags- the possibilities are endless. They also come in a range of different sizes so you can really mix and match!
There is nothing a mum would love more than to give herself a well deserved pamper after a long day. That’s why we’ve compiled a few recipes for easy homemade beauty products that won’t break your bank, but will bring out a smile. Made from the simplest of ingredients, you don’t have to be a master beautician to whip up these simple beauty products.

DIY Berry Yoghurt Facemask
This refreshing berry facemask is packed full of antioxidants, not only that but it smells amazing! A little bit about berries: Berries are known to be high in antioxidants and are nutritious. Blueberries are miracle fruits for acne, blemishes, pimples and uneven skin tone problems also. They are rich in fiber as well as vitamins – A and C.
Cinnamon, Orange and Coffee Body Scrub Coffee scrubs are the perfect exfoliator, and not only that- coffee releases caffeine which is absorbed into the skin and may help circulation. This scrub will leave your skins feeling smooth and smelling amazing! Orange oil is an essential oil, which is said to improve anxiety and boost your mood.
Peppermint Lip Scrub This peppermint lip scrub is sure to be a winner if given as a Mothers Day gift. It’s super easy to make, lasts for ages and smells good enough to eat. Whats even better? it is good enough to eat! This scrub is made of fully edible ingredients, so once you’re done exfoliating, lick your lips for a sweet treat.

March 2017 17
Spring is around the corner, and before you can fill your wardrobe with your favourite sandals and your staple floral dress, you need to consider getting rid of unecessary clutter.
W
inter is almost over, and that can only mean one thing- spring cleaning. Chances are, by the time spring comes your wardrobes are overflowing with unworn clothes, your drawers left untouched with the excuse of ‘I’ll do it after Christmas’. Physical clutter creates mental clutter, and no one has time for that. Hauling absolutely everything out of your wardrobes and drawers is not the best tactic, as this can make you feel like you’ve set a goal that can’t be achieved. The key is gradual changes- and here are some top tips to help de- clutter your home in time for the new season. 1. Get rid of multiples Everyone is guilty of this, whether it’s the overfilled drawer of tangled phone chargers or the sea of bobbled jumpers that are a slightly different shade of grey to the next. You need to ask yourself, do I really need this many of one thing? The answer is no, they have to go. The same rule applies for every step, remind yourself of the last time you used it. This is a good way to judge whether it really needs to stay. 2. Everything has its own place This is the motto for organised people. Everything has its place in your home, and if it doesn’t, do you really need it? Life is much simpler when you know exactly where something is because your space
18 March 2017
is less cluttered. You can save yourself time and effort if everything has its place. You’re taking an important phone call and need to scribble something down- the old cluttered home would have you frantically searching over and under piles of stuff to find that notebook that you swore you’d seen. The new home would mean you knew exactly where that notebook is because it’s where it has always been! 3. Out with the old and in with the new So you’ve just bought a new pair of jeans, great! Now you need to do a bit of a swap around. Instead of hanging them in your wardrobe with the 6 other pairs of almost identical forgotten jeans, take them all out and remind yourself of the last time you wore them. Throw the oldest pair out, as they were only taking up valuable wardrobe space! Do this every time you buy something new and you will avoid adding any more unnecessary clutter. 4. Maybe isn’t yes The process of de cluttering can often be a scary thought, and you may find yourself holding on to things and finding silly reasons to justify why. That birthday gift you didn’t really want but thought you’d use has been sat there gathering dust- it needs to go. Don’t let the fear of possibly one day needing an item keep you from throwing it out. Chances are, if you haven’t used it up until now, you’re
Call OM Plymouth 01752 691007
not going to use it any time soon! 5. Be Brutal Sometimes you may not know where to start, so you’ve got to give yourself something to organise your clutter. Make three piles, Keep, throw and give away. The first two are easy, The keep pile should be home to things that you use on a daily basis, or things that you ‘love’. The throw pile should contain everything that you don’t mind ‘losing’, you haven’t used in forever or is simply rubbish. The giveaway pile is not so easy. This could easily fall into a ‘maybe’ category, you have all the intentions of giving these things away, but a few months down the line they end up in the bottom of your wardrobe again. If you place anything here, think who you could give it to, a charity for example, and make plans to have it out of your home asap! 5. Re-organise Once you’ve finished the de-cluttering process, you may find that you’ve got a lot of unused and empty space. This is a great time to re-organise your belongings. Changing your space around can make everything feel refreshed and renewed. Even go as far as moving furniture around- It can make a room feel much bigger and brighter, and may even encourage you to do the same to every room in your home!

MORTGAGE ADVICE BUREAU It’s not every day you get to meet one of the country’s best mortgage advisors, and yet, I’ve just shaken hands with a man who is the only person in the south west to have won an industry ‘Oscar’ for best first time buyer mortgage broker. - Written by Duncan Little.
“It’s a great piece of recognition,” says James from Plymouth’s Mortgage Advice Bureau. “It’s not an award decided on a golf course but it’s one which you receive based on feedback from clients and peers. It means a lot to me following 11 years of hard work and graft.” It’s not surprising that James is at the top of his game. Being part of Plymouth’s Mortgage Advice Bureau means there is a real focus on staff training to ensure all the team really are made of the ‘right stuff.’ 26 year old Jessica Bailey has just completed the gruelling process, which is run on a national level by the Mortgage Advice Bureau and includes four residential modules. There are exams to pass and lots of studying to complete to ensure you earn your stripes. “You need to have the industry exams behind you so you’re more than competent and have confidence in what you’re doing,” explains Jessica. The course looks at various areas of legislation – from crime through to the European Union and regulation. Training for Jessica included shadowing
colleagues and gaining a full understanding of all the different aspects and nuances of finance – from mortgages to insurance. Matthew Johns, Director of Plymouth Mortgage Advice Bureau, is justifiable very proud of the training scheme - which is open to people who are looking for an ‘in road’ into the mortgage industry. Recruits can come from a variety of backgrounds and can easily apply as their own experience, unique talents and strong work ethic can add a powerful mix for the company’s DNA. Jessica’s own background had been as an apprentice for a financial firm - where she started at the age of 19. Her goal had always been to ‘move forward’ and it was her ambitious streak which led her to Plymouth’s MAB.

ames Webster is justifiable proud of the accolade from the British Mortgage Awards, writes Duncan Little. It’s a big deal as there are more than 10,000 nominations for all the different categories. To be classed as the best in his category, across the whole country, is, frankly, amazing.
“
we like to have fresh ideas, and people, to come into the industry. so we recruit from any background
“It’s a rare training programme,” explains Matt, in his office overlooking North Hill. “There are no lender ties and we want to grow and expand.
The course may be an intensive six months but there is an additional two years of training to ensure excellence. The company deals with more than 100 lenders and there are thousands of mortgage products available to choose from. In short, there’s a lot for the staff to learn! From a client’s point of view, it’s reassuring to know your team has a full grounding of knowledge behind them. In other words, you are in safe hands when you chat through a home loan with them. Such knowledge is allowing the company to expand into a variety of strands – from increasing its on-line

services to ensuring face to face contact for clients who prefer a more traditional approach to doing business. The team’s website is due to undergo changes over the next few months to cater for the growing on-line demand from the ‘millennial’ generation. It means there will be greater choice for how you want to approach your mortgage application. You’ll be able to opt for applying for a mortgage entirely on-line which effectively allows you to ‘choose what you want.’ There’ll also be an on-line ‘pick your own mortgage but with advice’ option (which has a larger amount of guarantee attached to it as a professional helps to guide you through the mortgage maze). You’ll also have the chance to chat with someone over Skype and, of course, you can always choose to pop in and chat with one of their friendly advisors. “It’s a chance to create an environment where people are comfortable to move with the times but, crucially, without alienating existing clients,” explains Matt. It’s certainly true to say building relationships, and keeping them, is a key part of what Plymouth MAB is all about.

PLYMOUTH’S BEST BUSINESSES AND ENTREPRENEURS “It’s all about returning business,” explains Jessica. “It’s important as it helps to grow a client’s confidence and so establish our reputation and standing within the community. key ingredients to success. Crucially, their broad remit allows for greater choice. “We deal with all banks and will work hard to get the best rate for you,” says Matt.
Matt agrees and says the work at Plymouth Mortgage Advice Bureau really does make a difference for people struggling to get to grips with all the complexities of how mortgages work.
Clients don’t necessarily get exclusive deals from their banks, which is something we can provide
With so much talk on Brexit, the economy and house buying together with mortgage rates, our conversation naturally turns to what Matt and his team feel the future will hold for the Millennial generation.
The benefits of using the Plymouth Mortgage Advice Bureau over other brokers, and banks, are clear. The size of the award winning on-site team, combined with their friendly attitude, are
“Rates are at a historic low and I think they will stay low for a long time. The economy is not strong enough for them to go up. Inflation is going to increase so I can’t see there being any difference to where they are now. Brexit has, so far, been good for the housing market as rates have got cheaper which means mortgages are cheaper too.”
“
The team also help a large number of military personnel as the ‘Armed Forces Help to Buy’ scheme means you can receive up to a year’s salary as a deposit (which can be deducted as, and when, you
“
“If you go to your own bank then you are potentially gambling with the biggest purchase you will ever make.”
The smile on Jessica’s face shows her delight at having trained in one of the best mortgage practices in the UK – her career sees her working with estate agents in the Torbay area for four days a week. Matt puts the success of his team down to sheer hard work and focus. He believes in trusting your instincts. “If you make a decision, even if in the short term it doesn’t look right, stick with it. You have to see it through, even if, initially, it causes issues in the short term. It’s a key point for investment.” Just some of the team at the North Hill Office

This ethos has shown both short terms and long term gain for the firm as its investment in a comprehensive training programme for Jessica and other key members of staff, has paid off in spades! It’s something which is already paying dividends for the firm, the team and, most importantly, the clients themselves.

BUSINESS PROFILE
J
ulie Wotton and Sarah Jury, owners of Halo Hairdressing located in Crownhill Village, are now coming up to their 8th year of ownership since taking over the business in 2009. They first met when Julie was Manageress at the ‘Snips’ Crownhill Branch and Sarah became her apprentice. Sarah tells us how Julie got her through training. “I’m really grateful she was on at me all the time, else I wouldn’t be where I am today!” Fast forward to 2009, manager Julie was just returning to work after having her first child when the news broke that her 10 years of management at the Co-op owned salon Snips was soon to be no more, due to Co-op selling off the non-food businesses. “Both of us hated the thought of the salon closing and that us, and the rest of the staff would no longer be together” says Sarah. Julie and Sarah took the decision to team up, and buy the Business. “It was a no brainer as it’s such a lovely salon with lovely, loyal clients” Sarah tells me. Julie explains that the name Halo was chosen as they collectively wanted something short and sweet. “We had shortlisted the name as one of our favourites, then a week later Beyonce brought out her song ‘Halo’ – it was definitely a sign and confirmed that this was the name to be!”

Sarah- 13 years experience
The two ladies work very well together as partners, owing to their many years of combined hairdressing experience and close friendship. Now in her 30th year of hairdressing, Julie works two days a week as she has three children to look after; nevertheless, she is always on the end of the phone to give advice. She has complete trust in her loyal team members that all the work will carry on smoothly and continue to serve hundreds of happy customers each week. Julie balances her work life and personal life well. She does a lot of work for her childrens primary School on the PTA. She tells us how she was recently selling tickets for a pig race, and is now organising a circus in her spare time “I do it for my children really, my youngest is going into foundation this year- the money that I help raise benefits them so it’s all worth it”. It’s been a year now since the salon had a total refurb. “We can’t believe how quick that time has gone. We are really pleased with the end result and it’s now hard to imagine how it was before”. Sarah tells us that it was only meant to be some ‘new mirrors and a lick of paint’ but instead everything apart from the wooden floor – which was replaced only three years ago was renewed, transforming the salon into the spotless, sleek, modern and stylish

It’s nice to offer our clients a nice salon to sit back and relax in
Together, the professional team of six has 100 years’ combined experience, five of which are the ‘original Snips Girls’. Sarah explains that she feels very lucky to have a great bunch of girls who work so well together. The newest team member is Emily, who has been working at Halo for 18 months now. Julie tells us how Emily “fits in perfectly with the friendly salon team”. “We are quite fortunate that we can offer a wide range of services to our clients”. Each stylist can do anything and everything – ranging from a simple cut to a modern colouring technique. Sarah says “it’s nice that all of our stylists can do different aspects of hairdressing. It keeps the job exciting and varied as no two hairstyles are the same!” As Halo is a popular family salon, every member of the team is an expert in treating customers of every age, and the salon welcomes ladies, gents and children. They will also go the extra mile to

help every one of their clients, taking the time to help them down the stairs even during a very busy day.
They are committed in keeping a very strong work ethic in many senses. They have a strong client focus, a passion for great customer service, a friendly and professional team and many offers in store such as a free consultation and money-off vouchers. Julie believes that impeccable customer service is the key to keeping the regular clients.
Julie explains that she just wants to see the salon thrive and continue what it is doing so well. “L’oreal and Goldwell are keeping us on our toes with continuous training opportunities.” Julie says they just want to keep up with the ever changing fashion trends and always be learning new things together. Sarah finished off by saying “Halo is going into its 8th year and is still nice and busy, although we always welcome new clients. We offer a free consultation for anyone. Whether you want a complete change or just would like a general chat about your hair- we will always offer a warm welcome. We pride ourselves in offering great service to our clients”.
For years, Halo has continued to stock professional L’Oreal, Goldwell and GHD products. The global leader in cosmetics, L’Oreal, holds an excellent relationship with the salon as they know that the staff are very proactive, therefore they are regularly provided with in-salon training so every stylist is fully trained and up-to-date with all the latest trends, products, knowledge and techniques.
“
“
Halo prides itself on its outstandingly strong, friendly and professional team who are all very close friends both in and outside of work
They regularly go out for each other’s birthdays, bringing their partners along with them as they are also close to the team members at Halo. And despite being the owners, partners Julie and Sarah don’t believe in a hierarchy when it comes to the not-so-fun, end of the day jobs; they will happily help out and clean at the same time as all of their staff members.
So what is the key to Halo’s Success? Julie says it’s all down to communication. “Communication is key. Making sure the team talk to each other and communicate with clients makes for a successful salon”. Sarah and Julie also agree that having a great team who work together so well helps with the salons success. Their many positive testimonials show just how good a reputation the salon has built up over the years. Clients can be sure to receive the best possibly service every time as they comment on the continuous cleanliness and well-being of the salon; the floor is swept after every appointment, towels are freshly laundered after every client and only the most professional products are used, neatly tucked away in their new upstairs storage unit. They are always looking to attract new clients and they never take their regular clients for granted. So what does the future hold for Halo?

CONSIDERING MAKING A WILL OR LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY BUT WORRIED ABOUT THE COST?
SPECIAL OFFER FOR OM READERS Simple Single Will - £120 plus VAT Simple Mirror Wills - £160 plus VAT Wills The majority of adults in this country have no valid or an outdated Will. As a result, seven out of ten people who die leave their loved ones with what may be unnecessarily complicated problems, at a time when they are least able to deal with them. Please see our special offer for straightforward Wills. Lasting Powers of Attorney A lasting power of attorney gives someone you trust the legal authority to make decisions on your behalf, if either you’re unable to in the future or you no longer wish to make decisions for yourself and is particularly important to consider for people recently diagnosed with any progressive illness, as making a Power of Attorney now will provide peace of mind and an ‘insurance policy’ for future years.

BUSINESS PROFILE - WESTWARD TRUST SERVICES When they met in 1992, Derek worked for Scottish Widows and John was an IFA in the City of Plymouth. Fast forward 24 years, multiple business models and a lot of hard work, Westward Trust Services is a company to look out for. We sat down with Derek Hall and John Rio to find out exactly how they got to the position they are in today.
Going back to where it all began in 1992, Derek tells us how he was a sales consultant for Scottish Widows, which meant that he could call on independent financial advisors and encourage them to do business. John was one of those IFA’S working in Plymouth. John took over his father in laws business in 1994, and kept in close contact with Derek during this period. Derek on occasion was asked to present Inheritance tax Solutions to John’s clients and it was after one of these meetings that they sat down and discussed the merits of going into business together using Inheritance Tax and other related issues as a target market. Their business relationship became very strong, “we came to know each other very well” said Derek. Derek became an associate in 2001. It made perfect sense given the duo’s history. In 2003 a new company was formed with both John and Derek as its directors dealing solely with Inheritance tax and investment issues. They set up a seminar programme covering their target market and so the future was set. Over the next twelve years, with close to £40 million under management Derek and John considered they had been successful and were looking for the next big opportunity to rise. This opportunity became apparent when talking to new and existing clients with regards to Long Term Care and asset protection. Derek and John both agreed there was potential in this market and established Westward Trust Services Ltd, a company which could give advice specifically for those needs.

These days the financial services industry has become a lot tougher to qualify in compared with previous years, with the introduction of regulation and compliance things have changed a lot to how they used to be. “You used to be able to become a financial advisor or insurance salesman with nothing, no qualifications and no experience whatsoever” says Derek. However, with new rules you need to have a minimum of a diploma in financial planning. Strategically Derek and John pre- empted the need for this qualification before it became a requirement, and gradually started passing the exams ready for the changes they had already foreseen. “We like to think that if we are working in such an area, especially when you’re talking to high net worth clients, they’re the first ones to ask how we’re qualified, and so we took the exams that were relevant before they were compulsory.” Derek and John have gone way beyond that now, passing advanced papers in taxation trust and investments- one of the highest qualifications you can get from the Chartered Insurance Institute. So who are Westward Trust looking for? Their ideal demographic is what they call ‘middle England’. John explains how the Trust would work in regards to a target client; “People who’ve never had anything who eventually require care, will have that covered for them by their local council”. On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you’re very wealthy with pension funds then you don’t have to worry about care because you’ve got the funds to cover it. Middle England is the people who get affected, because they could potentially lose out on a lot.

A
s the famous saying goes, “there are 2 things you cannot avoid in life, Death and Taxes”, and at the same time these are 2 things most of us will try to avoid. However, the inevitable will get to all of us in the end so a secure updated Will is something we should all take into serious consideration. Westward Trust is looking to help guide people with just that, by provide wills, lasting powers of attorney and trusts that can secure your assets and protect them against the hostile creditors, and other unforeseen situations that can happen in your future. The idea is to ensure you and your family will have control of your hard earned wealth and that you are the only ones who ultimately benefit from it.
If you have an issue or you want information on how best to use the concessions that you’re allowed to use, then you need to come and talk to us
Westward Trust wants to show that they are a personalised and friendly service. They can visit people in their own home, or clients can visit them at their office. “Clients like the option to be able to do that, particularly older clients who perhaps can’t get around so easily, and they might prefer the luxury of their own home”.
Email: info@westwardtrust.com
The future for the industry looks set to grow as babies being born today are expected to live as long as 100. The medical technology we are researching means that people are living longer, people are going to need care in the later stages of their lives and will need financial aid. With all that in mind the market will continue to grow. Looking ahead, Derek and John see Westward Trust Services as a one stop shop for Wills Lasting Powers of Attorney and Asset protection Trusts, marketing it to say “Here we are, this is what we can offer and this is what we do”. John tells us that they’ve always believed Westward Trust Services to have great potential and now they have more time to focus on building the business. They are in the process establishing a brand new website, which will be up and running in a few months time. They have an office in Lockyer Street Plymouth which has recently been set up opened and they are both looking positively to the future. As John and Derek would say, “If you require information on Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney or want information on the concessions available regarding care costs, then you need to come and talk to us”.

NEW YEAR, NEW CAREER Now that the excitement of Christmas has worn off, you might be thinking that a change of career is long overdue. We go over the fundamentals of job hunting, and the importance of having an online presence to hopefully help you bag that dream job in 2017!
T
he economy has been in a slow recovery since the 2007-2008 great recession, and is expected to continue to full employment in the next year or two. With unemployment rates at an all time low (4.8%), it may seem like there is more competition out there than ever. With more and more job applications being carried out online, it is increasingly more important that you make yourself stand out, and have a strong online presence.
degree overview should be above your GCSE information and so on. Generally, employment history should always be within the last 10 years, and any small, short term jobs should have less information than any recent, more relevant job roles. A really good tip is to take the time to tailor each CV for each job role you are applying for. That way, you can highlight key skills specifically for that job.
The cover letter is a chance to tell your potential employer about anything not mentioned in your CV. A good thing to do before you start writing is to really understand the job role you are applying for and understand what kind of person they are looking for. This way, you can make yourself a mental checklist of things to include, and tick them off as you write. Include key words- this could be a certain skill they are looking for, or a certain programme they want you to be confident in using. Your aim is to parrot back everything that they say they are looking for- but in a discrete and clever way. Cover letters usually follow a basic layout, however this can be personalised based on the type of job you are applying for. You need to start of by saying why you are writing to them, and how you found out about the job vacancy. Keep this first paragraph short and concise, you don’t want to ramble on and risk the employer
LinkedIn is basically a huge online directory of all companies and professionals. The most common thing employers do after reading your CV is go online and check your LinkedIn Profile, so as you can imagine it’s crucial that this demonstrates all your positive attributes and is kept up to date regularly. If you don’t have a profile, its quick and easy to sign up. The fundamentals are a professional photo of yourself, usually just a headshot. This means that potential employers can instantly put a face to the name and this can benefit massively. You also need to update your profile with any previous work experience, and add a list of your skills. This means that employers can find you based on these skills. LinkedIn is also a great networking platform. Finding professionals in a similar field is as simple as typing in the search bar. People can see when you look at their profile, so they often reciprocate and take a peek at yours. You can then choose to connect with people, and receive updates from them on your homepage. This is a great way of keeping ‘in the loop’.
Cover Letter
losing interest. The second paragraph should be about matching your skills to the vacancy. Talk about your education and what you’ve learnt from your experience, you can use bullet points to get maximum effect with as few words as possible. Remember to show enthusiasm, show them that you’ve done your research on the company and you know your stuff! Finish off by directing them to your CV link, and any other attachments you need to include, thank them for their time, and end in a friendly but professional manner. Portfolio If you are applying for a job that is in the creative industry, for example, a portfolio is something that is seen as fundamental. A portfolio of work is a showcase of your best skills, projects that you have completed or work that you have undertaken. Portfolios can be online, many people choose websites such as Wordpress or Wix to create a simple but effective online document of work. If you are feeling really creative, you can create a physical portfolio to take to interviews. This could really wow a potential employer as they can see the amount of effort you have gone to. Flicking through pages is also a lot more satisfying than clicking an online link! A portfolio can be made up of work done at University, Work done in previous employment, or even things that you have done in your own personal time.
CV Your CV is often the first thing a potential employer opens when receiving job applications, so it is worth taking some time and effort to make sure this is done to the best of your ability. A CV is generally no longer than two pages, and should follow this basic layout; personal details, personal profile, key skills, employment history and education history. You can also add your personal interests and references if room allows. Your CV should always be in chronological order, so if you are a recent graduate, your
