ew service for grandparents worried about losing contact with their grandchildren

Stephen Sowden

The Family Law Company has launched a new service to support grandparents who may need legal help to continue or restore contact with their grandchildren after a divorce, separation, death or family disputes. Every year, thousands of grandparents find themselves in a distressing situation where they are unable to see their grandchildren. Currently, grandparents do not have rights of contact with grandchildren and in some extreme cases, never see their grandchildren

again after a break up. However, the Courts are increasingly aware of the beneficial role a grandparent plays in a child’s upbringing. Solicitor Stephen Sowden heads up the Grandparents Service at The Family Law Company in Plymouth. He says that grandparents have much to offer to younger children. “They can have such an important role to play in a grandchild’s life; estrangement means these children are missing out on the knowledge and experience – as well as the friendship of an older generation.” The Family Law Company does not always advise legal action from the outset but looks at alternative ways that clients might engage with the mother or father. This means trying to resolve matters without resorting to Court action, through exploring other avenues to help open up communications between the parties involved. This is often enough to secure contact, but if it is not successful, the company guides clients through the legal process sensitively.

The Family Law Company has already helped a number of grandparents to achieve ongoing contact with their grandchildren, even when the situation appeared almost impossible to resolve. “This is a niche area of family law and one which The Family Law Company is committed to providing,” says Stephen. “There is an immense sense of satisfaction when we see grandparents and grandchildren reunited.” Estranged grandparents can visit the Advice Service referral page on The Family Law Company’s website, which gives a direct telephone number and a referral form to complete. The company will then arrange an appointment either at its offices or remotely via Skype or a telephone call. www.thefamilylawco.co.uk

At The Family Law Co we are specialists too; our expert knowledge helps us to see the wider picture in all aspects of family law, including divorce, separation & financial matters, co-habitation agreements and grandparents’ rights. Men’s Health Week 2017 Mens Health Week will run from the 12th of June to the 18th, and this year’s theme is beating belly fat! Belly fat is more dangerous than fat stored elsewhere in the body and men are far more susceptible than women. So men, time to get those tape measures out!

W

e all know that men and women carry their weight differently, with women tending to develop fat around their hips, thighs and buttocks; whereas men watch the inches grow around their abdomens. Unfortunately, not all fat is created equally, and a thicker waist is far more dangerous than weight stored elsewhere on the body. An inflated belly is generally due to an overabundance of visceral fat, and unlike its subcutaneous (under the skin) counterpart, is hazardous to internal organs by provoking inflammatory pathways, signalling molecules that interfere with the body’s normal hormonal functions. Fat cells are more than extra calories stored away; they have a huge impact on the everyday function of the human body, and when stored viscerally, this can cause a host of unpleasant symptoms including high blood pressure, gall stones, and reproductive issues. So what causes belly fat? Obviously balancing the calories you eat has a massive impact on your weight. If you eat too much and exercise too little- you’re likely to pack on excess pounds. However, age does play a role too. As you age, you lose muscle, even more so if you’re not physically active. This decrease in muscle mass causes your body to not use up calories the way it should. This can make it more challenging to maintain a healthy weight.

10

According to the 2015- 2020 Dietary guidelines, men in their 50’s need about 200 calories less than they would do in their 30’s due to this muscle loss There are five main health risks that occur more commonly in individuals with high levels of visceral fat, including increased inflammation, higher risks of diabetes, heart disease and strokes, and an increased chance of suffering from poor mental health. Inflammation One of the biggest concerns for those who have high levels of visceral fat is inflammation. Inflammation is the root to many diseases, and is linked with various conditions such as cognitive decline, arthritis, diabetes and more. Visceral fat produces inflammatory molecules that are filtered through to the liver, leading to greater levels of inflammations and hormonedisruption. Visceral fat itself can also become inflamed, causing a series of autoimmune reactions. Diabetes Visceral fat is also has a large role in insulin resistance, resulting in a heightened risk of diabetes. Almost 90% of individuals suffering from type 2 Diabetes are overweight or obese. Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented through simple lifestyle changes, including exercise and weight management through diet.

DETERMINING YOUR BELLY SIZE & CUTTING THE FAT

1.

Stand and place a tape measure around your bare stomach, just above your hip bone.

2.

Pull the tape measure until it fits snugly around you but doesn’t push into your skin. Make sure it is level.

3.

Relax, exhale and measure your waist, remember to resist the urge to suck in your stomach!

For men, a waist measurement of more than 40 inches (102 centimeters) indicates an unhealthy concentration of belly fat and a greater risk of health problems. To help battle the bulge, a series of small, simple changes can really have a profound effect on overall health and wellbeing. Healthy Diet Eating a healthy diet is key to any kind of weight loss, with emphasis on plant based foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Lean sources of protein are also a good choice- such as fish and low fat dairy products. The main aim is to take in less calories than you burn off during excercise- hence leading to weight loss. Portion Control The next simple change is to control portion sizes. Even when you’re making healthy choices, the calories can add up. A good way to monitor this is using your hands as a personalized portion indicator. This may sound strange, but it is a quick and easy way to ensure you are eating right. For men, it is recommended that you use your palm to determine your protein portions, your first to determine your veggie portions, your cupped hand to determine your carb portions and your thumb to determine your fat portions. For men, two of each is recommended. Of course, this is just a starting point and should be tailored to you. Reduce Alcohol Intake Drinking excess alcohol can cause you to gain belly fat — the beer belly. However, beer alone isn’t to blame. Drinking too much alcohol of any kind can increase belly fat, because alcohol contains calories. Although some research suggests wine might be an

exception, if you drink alcohol, do so only in moderation. For men age 65 and younger, moderation means up to two drinks a day. For men older than age 65, it means up to one drink a day. The less you drink the fewer calories you’ll consume and the less likely you’ll be to gain belly fat. The importance of Excercise Lastly, but probably the most important factor, is including physical activity in your daily routine. For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends moderate aerobic activity, such as brisk walking for at least 2 hours a week, or vigorous aerobic activity such as jogging or running for 75 minutes a week. The main rule is simple. The more weight you want to lose, the more you should move around and excercise. You can tone your abdominal muscles with sit ups or other targeted exercise, but spot reduction (losing fat in one specific area) is not possible, and doing endless amounts of crunches will not mean a reduction in belly fat! That being said, aerobic excercises like walking, running and swimming can have a profound effect on belly fat and overall weight loss. There is no doubt that losing stubborn belly fat takes effort and patience so why not start todayput on some running shoes, get out in the fresh air and do your bit to take part in Mens Health Week!

Plymouth’s Lighthouse History Everyone knows of the iconic Smeaton’s Tower standing proud on Plymouth Hoe, but did you know that it is the third of four Eddystone Lighthouses? These impressive structures served as a beacon of safety for passing ships to aviod the treacherous reef below

he Eddystone, or Eddystone Rocks forms part of an extensive reef of eroded rocks which rise up in deep water about 14 miles South West of Plymouth. Formerly a treacherous hazard for ships approaching the English Channel and the port city of Plymouth, the rocks have played host to four generations of the Eddystone Lighthouse. 1. WINSTANLEY’S TOWER 1698 - 1703 The first tower attempt to render the Eddystone Reef of rocks safe to shipping was by a man named Henry Winstanley, an engraver, merchant ship owner, and designer. Winstanley promised to rid the English Channel of such a menace to shipping after one of the ships he had invested in heavily was destroyed by the Eddystone Rocks.

weather vane and ornamental scroll work adorned the exterior of the huge structure. The light in the Eddytone was first lit in 1698. 24 candles were used in total and it was the first offshore lighthouse to be built in Britain. Having great confidence in his structure Winstanley expressed a wish to be on the lighthouse during a storm. In November 1703, the greatest storm ever recorded in this country occurred. The following day there was hardly any of the lighthouse structure to be seen and its occupants had disappeared. The lighthouse had survived only three years. 2. RUDYERD’S TOWER 1709 - 1755

In 1696, Winstanley commenced work on the octagonal wooden structure. The work progressed steadily until 1697 when an incident occurred in which a French privateer captured Winstanley and took him to France. England was at war with France at this time. However, when Louis XIV heard of the incident he immediately ordered that Winstanley be released saying that “France was at war with England, not with humanity”. This rendered the importance of the Eddystone International.

Captain Lovett acquired the lease of the rock for 99 years, and by an Act of Parliament was allowed to charge all ships passing, a toll of 1d per ton, both inward and outward. His designer was John Rudyerd, a London based silk merchant with West Country roots, who he engaged to design and build a new lighthouse for the Eddystone reef in 1706. Taking a shipbuilders- rather than a house builders, approach he came up with a design based on a cone instead of Winstanley’s octagonal shape. He built a conical wooden structure around a core of brick and concrete and it was first lit in 1709.

Winstanley was known as an eccentric, and this was reflected in his architecture. External ladders, a huge

This design was solid and the lighthouse lasted for 47 years, until it was destroyed not by the sea, but by a

fire. In 1755, the top of the lantern caught fire. Henry Hall, the keeper on watch, who was 94 years old- did his best to put out the fire by throwing water upwards from a bucket. While doing so, the leaden roof melted, and molten lead ran down his throat as he was looking up. He and the other keepers battled continuously against the fire, but as it burnt downwards it gradually drove them out onto the rock. The lighthouse continued to burn for 5 days and was completely destroyed. Sadly, Henry lived only 12 days after the incident. The piece of lead found in Henry Halls stomach after post Mortem can still be seen today in the Edinburgh Museum. 3. SMEATON’S TOWER 1759 - 1882 Smeaton’s Tower- the third lighthouse, marked a major step forward in the design of such structures. For the first time on this site was the work of a leader in the civil engineering profession of his time. In 1756, a Yorkshire man and civil engineer named John Smeaton, travelled to Plymouth to take on this task. He had decided to construct a tower based on the shape of an English Oak tree for strength but made of granite blocks rather than wood. John Smeaton pioneered ‘hydraulic lime’, a quick drying concrete that will set under water, the formula for which is still used today. He also developed a technique of securing the granite blocks using dovetail joints and marble dowels. He is also credited with coming up with a device for lifting large blocks of stone from ships at sea to considerable heights which has never been improved upon. Local granite blocks was used for both the foundations and exterior of his tower, and Portland stone for the inside. Construction started in 1756 at Millbay and the light was first lit by 24 candles on 16 October 1759. Smeaton’s robust tower set the pattern for a new era of lighthouse construction. In the 1870’s cracks appeared in the rock upon which Smeaton’s lighthouse had stood for 120 years. It was also by this time, too small to contain the latest machinery. It was re-erected on Plymouth Hoe as a monument to the builder and has been Plymouth’s most famous landmark ever since. 4. DOUGLASS’S TOWER - 1882 ONWARDS The new larger tower, 49 metres high, was designed by James Douglass, at the time Engineer-in-Chief of Trinity House. It was founded on the actual body of the Eddystone reef some 40 yards to the south-east of Smeaton’s site. By now, lighthouse construction was a much more refined business due to the developments made throughout the years. Douglass used larger stones, dovetailed not only to each other on all sides but also to the courses above and below. It was completed in three and a half years, and in 1882 the present Eddystone Lighthouse was opened amidst a blaze of publicity, by the Duke of Edinburgh, who laid the final stone of the tower. Douglass Towers original oil powered lamps were replaced by electrics in the 1950’s, and a helicopter deck was constructed in 1980. Another part of the modernisation process was the lighthouse becoming unmanned in 1982, bringing an end to the 284 years of keepers of the Eddystone Light.
