The job market is perpetually evolving. We now live in an age where candidates drive the market and as such, firms need to be doing more to attract the right talent. As a small collaborative consultancy team of seven, Educated Recruitment has become an awardwinning agency who pride themselves on their approachable, competent, and can-do attitude. Educated Recruitment is looking for experienced and newly qualified teachers and teaching assistants who are interested in working flexible hours with competitive rates of pay, and for teachers who want to gain experience in a variety of different learning environments across the South West, including Devon, Cornwall and Somerset in school’s that need relief staff on an emergency, or long-term basis.

arie Cleave, owner and director of Educated Recruitment, has worked in recruitment for around fifteen years and started her successful business from scratch with just a telephone, a computer, and a couple of contacts in her spare bedroom at home. Since starting her business in 2013, Marie has recruited six staff members whose incredible work ethic makes her a proud director. OM spent the morning with Marie and office manager, Emma Woodhall, who gave us an insight into how Educated Recruitment was built and how it has evolved into the successful recruitment agency is has over its short 6 years in business. Marie never envisioned starting up her own business. When finishing education, Marie dove into a career in banking for some time, and after working her way up the ladder in a few different banks, she became a successful mortgage adviser. Although she loved her job and enjoyed working closely with her clients, Marie decided on a career change and started her first job in a recruitment agency where she worked for three and a half years.

After being employed by a further two recruitment companies, where she met Sam Parramore, Educated Recruitment’s Plymouth and Cornwall Consultant. Marie, with the support of her husband, then decided to start her own company and Educated Recruitment was founded in 2013. Upon deciding to start up her own business, Marie spent her evening’s typing-up application packs and creating check-lists ready for her business to go live in mid-August 2013.

“Self-motivation was hard, and money was tight. My husband was a key part of keeping me motivated.” It was in August that Marie nervously held her first open day at the Passage House Hotel in Kingsteignton. With the open day being a success, several teachers came on board with the company, so when the schools re-opened in September, she was able to start making phone calls and from there, her business took off. Marie had hired an assistant in October 2013 shortly after going live. Her assistant

Marie Cleave and Emma Woodhall worked in her spare room at home and handled her admin whilst she was away from the office. Marie soon realised that as the business was growing, her living space had shrunk and business premises was next to tick off her list. At this point, Marie starting looking at renting or purchasing offices in Newton Abbot, and came across the premises they are in today, which was originally listed as a house. After seeing the potential for something more and negotiating to transform the house into a business building, Marie used every penny she had saved up from her second year of business and secured a mortgage.

Educated Recruitment is now celebrating almost five years since setting up in their Newton Abbot Head Office. It was shortly after setting up; Marie received a call from now office manager, Emma Woodhall. As a qualified teacher, Emma had previously been in contact with Marie about supply teaching upon completing her degree in teaching. After talking with Marie and receiving some helpful honest advice, Emma secured another teaching role, separate from Educated Recruitment. It was three years later, after working in various roles from teaching, sales and recruitment that Emma decided to make a phone call to Marie enquiring about roles at Educated Recruitment. After a conversation and instant connection between the pair,

Emma’s career with Educated Recruitment began on the 25th February 2015 and she has now worked her way up to Office Manager and Exeter Consultant.

“I had no thoughts in my head that she couldn’t do the job. It was a no brainer. I am blessed to have Emma” — Marie. Since hiring Emma, Marie has employed five other permanent staff members, all with different roles. Sam Parramore, Plymouth and Cornwall consultant, Maddie Holland, Torbay and Teignbridge Consultant, Abbi Hall, Taunton Consultant, Kate Anderson, Compliance and Finance Administrator, and Educated Recruitment’s most recent team member, Zoe Andrews, Apprentice in Administration.

“It’s amazing to work here, I love it. I have found something that I have confidence in and I am good at what I do. I have an amazing team and an amazing lady [Marie] who saw it all in me” — Emma. The most important qualities Marie looks for in a consultant are resilience, confidence, honesty, and great communication. Both Marie and Emma describe how efficiently the team work together to ensure everyone is supported and appreciated every day. Every member of the team has gone through intense training to ensure that all processes are followed in a timely manner. All calls to the Educated Recruitment team will be answered in a friendly and informative manner by a member of the team, who will answer all of your enquires through specialist experienced knowledge.

“We do our best to give back.” The Educated Recruitment team also work together outside of office hours regularly to raise money for a whole host of charities, including recently supporting Rowcroft in a 24K bike ride, a 5k marine challenge in Exmouth for Devon Air Ambulance, and regular coffee mornings for McMillan. Their biggest charity fund so far was for the Children’s Hospice where they raised £1100 during a charity quiz night. Educated Recruitment pride themselves on looking after and paying their teachers well. The team meet all of their teachers

face to face, they either come to their offices, or a member of the team will meet them nearer to their location. As of now, Educated Recruitment has around 400 teachers on their books.

“If a school invested in us and gave us a chance they wouldn’t look back.” Educated Recruitment is looking to expose and expand the number of teachers and schools in the Plymouth and Ivybridge area. Sam Parramore, consultant for Plymouth and Ivybridge, frequently goes to networking events in the area and is keen to take on local experienced and newly qualified teachers. The festive season is upon us! This time of year is our absolute favourite, the leaves are changing, mornings are crisp, and it’s a time where we all get together to experience what our amazing city and surroundings have on offer. One such offering is Mount Edgcumbe which is open to the public all year round, however during the festive season, the natural beauty of the historic park is transformed into a magical and mesmeric evening experience designed for everyone to enjoy.

onder Nights is a spectacle for the people of Plymouth and beyond to immerse themselves in throughout December and January whilst enjoying the beautiful mansion and landscape of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park. Here at OM, we caught up with its creator, Richard Toy, and we were blown away by his passion and innovative imagination that has brought to life an amazing and carefully choreographed night of immersive illumination, spectacular sound, and even performing arts! When visiting Mount Edgcumbe it was clear that the success of Wonder Nights has been driven by company owner Richard, who has a passion for “people enjoying themselves.” Before moving to Plymouth and delving into entrepreneurship, Richard was very much locked into the corporate world with a career in retail management for a stationery company. “As much as I enjoyed my position, I had already progressed to the stage where I wanted to be and my passion was to ultimately always do what I intended to do, which was to run my own company,” Richard explains. Richard finished his job in Winchester and moved to Plymouth, a city he was familiar with due to its proximity to Cornwall where he grew up. In 2011, he left his career

where he took a leap of faith and launched his first attraction in the heart of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park.

“I love it down here, I wouldn’t necessarily want to live or work anywhere else. Down here is home now.” Richard also reveals how Mount Edgcumbe was the only park he was interested in within the South West. Before Wonder Nights was born, Richard started with Adventure Segway at Mount Edgcumbe. His business venture was sparked up around eight years ago when Plymouth Council were looking for a commercial partner to reinvigorate the park and introduce activities that a younger audience could enjoy. It was at this point Richard started to get involved in outdoor adventure activities and Adventure Segway has since become a permanent staple at the park after much success. Believe it or not, Wonder Nights stemmed from the popularity of night riding offered by Adventure Segway which is something that has become successful over the years especially at Halloween. Adventure Segway eventually transitioned from riding in the dark to becoming more of a “real experience” says Richard. “We did it for a couple of Christmases too and even put lights into the formal gardens and people were wowed by it all, they loved it.”

Meet Richard Toy! “I thought to myself would I ever get to a stage where potentially for the first time in this famous estates history, we illuminate the entire Earl’s Garden. That was a big leap to take” Richard tells us. Initially, Wonder Nights was the subbrand for the after-dark Christmas riding experience at Adventure Segway. Richard explains “in the end Wonder Nights was such a strong name, that we reinvigorated the whole look of the brand to what it is today.”

Richard gives firm credit to his staff and creative team for Wonder Nights becoming a reality. After taking a huge step with Wonder Nights, Richard couldn’t be happier with the success it has achieved year after year. He praises his family and friends for their positivity and for believing in his vision by giving him “wonderful support” whilst he established the experience.

Almost 100 people will come together to create ‘Wonder Nights’, including a staff team of about 40 people who will be working throughout the evenings whilst visitors will flood the park. Richard is also quick to give credit to his staff and creative team. “I can’t achieve it by myself,” Richard says, “but I can make it happen through having a team that I work very closely with to pull this all together.” Richard is very much the creative lead that Wonder Nights stems from. His passion for creativity and providing a fun, evening experience for all of the family to enjoy is made into a reality by his team of technical experts. “In terms of the creative team, there is about ten of us who will work closely together to make the magic happen”

Wonder Nights is very much designed from the outset to provide you with that wow factor. Richard explains how there are many illuminated gardens around the country, but those that see Wonder Nights can immediately see that this is much more than just lights in trees: “What we’ve done is take it one step further, we’ve created choreographed, and story-based shows within the natural context of the gardens that ensures this is an evening experience that all generations can come together to enjoy.” Wonder Nights offers a sense of escapism that everyone can relate to, with adults enjoying it just as much as the children.

“It’s certainly bigger this year in terms of lights and the cost to produce; in order to make it bigger and better than before.” “This year we have changed it so we have show times where people can stand and watch the show together,” Richard tells us. “You can explore the entirety of the gardens your own way as you are given a guide map at the entrance.”

“The power of the evening is in your hands.” “We have a new show this year called ‘Finding Wonderland’ which is a twentyfive minute light and music spectacle within the natural context of the gradeone listed gardens. For our visitors, it’s the carefully crafted music that really defines Wonder Nights.” Another new feature this year is called ‘The Vulnerable Edge’, which takes people “away from the niceties of the formal gardens into a valley where the most sinister creatures of the night live, and throws you into the middle of a thunderstorm” Richard explains. “It offers something that is wonderfully unpleasant.” As part of the Wonder Nights evening experience, there is also a fire garden with around a hundred real fire elements. With the backdrop of the city and the River Tamar behind, the fire elements create a “mirage of flames” that illuminates the face of the mansion. There’s even the opportunity for marshmallow toasting!

The experience is designed to be a full evening out and Richard recommends heading to the park early, as it could take between two and three hours to see everything once. If you are worried about getting peckish during your evening out exploring Wonder Nights, then worry not as every detail has been considered. A feasting tent and bar will be open, jam-packed with a wealth of festive treats for you to delve into from Bratwurst sausages from Germany, Yorkshire pudding wraps, mulled wine, spiced cider, hot chocolate and other seasonal specialities to make your evening completely satisfying.

This year, Wonder Nights is open from 4:00 pm, Thursday to Sunday, from December 12th until January 5th, plus the two Monday’s before Christmas and New Year. Booking in advance is advised to guarantee entry to Wonder Nights; however, it is possible to turn up on the night. There is a perk for booking online, as it is cheaper, and it will fast track you through admissions.

There is also a charitable element to Wonder Nights. “The whole experience is in aid of St Luke’s Hospice and if you do book a ticket online, a portion of your ticket cost will go directly to St Luke’s to support all of the work that they have done and continue to do”

What are those floating trees in the void of the sky? Have you seen the mysterious hovering trees yet? One of the expenditures Richard has organised this year is the illumination of trees that are situated on top of the mount. They can be seen right across the city of Plymouth!

Speaking of the ferry, ditch the car and come by water! “The most amazing way to get here is by water” Richard reveals, “then you really do get that sense of escapism by leaving the city behind. It’s as if you are going to this island, wherein the distance you can see these beams of lights going into the sky, and the approach to the park gives that sense of journey.” The ferry will run on an extended timetable right through until 9:30 pm during Wonder Nights. ENTERTAIN THE KIDS THIS CHRISTMAS Written by Charlotte Cooper It’s the countdown to Christmas and the children can hardly contain their excitement for the sound of Santa’s sleigh! Make Christmas come that little bit quicker with these festive events in and around Plymouth.

hristmas is the time of year when the kids go crackers with all the sugary sweeties and the promise of Santa’s sleigh soon to be speeding through the snow to deliver the gifts they’ve all been waiting so patiently for (or perhaps not so patiently). With that in mind, we’ve found four festive events to entertain the kids during the countdown to Christmas 2019.

Storytime with Father Christmas at Saltram House, Plymouth. December 1st. Take the kids and join Santa in the stables at Saltram House as he shares his festive stories and sings some seasonal songs. The enchantment begins at 5:00pm, tickets are available for children aged 1 year upwards, so wrap up and listen to the wonderful winter wisdom from Father Christmas himself.

‘The Snowman’ Santa’s Grotto at Borindon Hall Hotel, Plymouth. December 8th. Meet the man himself this Christmas and receive your first present at Borindon Hall with ‘The Snowman’ themed Santa’s Grotto.

Festive fun at the Donkey Sanctuary, Ivybridge. December 14. The Donkey Sanctuary in Ivybridge is having a free Christmas market to celebrate the snowy season, open from 11:00am to 3:00pm. There is something for all the family, including a raffle, tombola, live music, and hot and cold seasonal foods and drinks. The market offers a selection of special and unique gifts so you don’t have to stop the fun to get the shopping done! Let the kids enjoy the face painting, storytime, and writing to Santa. They will also have the chance to meet the resident herd of donkeys, including Pooh. Eeyore, and Lucky the Donkey. All proceeds from the event help fund the work of The Donkey Sanctuary. You can even have a photo taken with Santa and Lucky the Donkey to remember the day!

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, made even better by indulging in scrumptious sweet treats guilt free because it’s the holidays! Take a look at our favourite festive sweet treats to keep you going over Christmas this year!

Christmas cupcakes 280g self-raising flour, 175g golden caster sugar, 175g unsalted butter, very soft, 150g pot fat-free natural yogurt, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 3 eggs For the frosting: 85g unsalted butter, softened, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 200g icing sugar, sifted To decorate: natural green food colouring (for Christmas trees), sweets, sprinkles and white chocolate stars One Heat oven to 190C/170 fan/gas 5 and line a 12-hole muffin tin with cake cases. Put all the cake ingredients into a bowl and mix with a whisk until smooth. Spoon the mix into the cases, bake for 25 mins until golden and risen and a skewer comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack. Two For the frosting, beat the butter, vanilla extract and icing sugar until pale and creamy and completely combined. To make snowmen, reindeer and Christmas puddings, first spread the icing over the top of each cake. Then lay the chocolate buttons on top, slicing some buttons into quarters to make ears and hats. Finally, use icing pens for the details. For the Christmas tree, colour the icing with green food colouring and pipe onto the cakes using a star-shaped nozzle, decorate with sweets, sprinkles and white chocolate stars.

Reindeer cake pops 150g chocolate cake, 25g soft butter, 50g icing sugar, 25g plain chocolate, 100g milk chocolate, small pretzels, broken into large ‘antler’ shape pieces, 8 small jelly sweets, red chocolate beans or Smarties, 2 tbsp royal icing coloured black or purchased black writing icing Equipment: 8 cake pop sticks and a polystyrene block to stand up the cake pops One Crumble the cake into fine crumbs using your hands or in a food processor. Put into a bowl. In another bowl, beat together the butter and icing sugar until creamy. Two Melt the plain chocolate in the microwave or in a bowl over a pan of barely simmering water. Add the melted chocolate to the butter mixture and combine well. Add this to the cake crumbs and mix thoroughly using your hands, until it sticks together. Divide the mixture into eight and shape each one into a smooth ball. Insert a cake pop stick, place on a tray lined with baking parchment and chill for at least 2 hours. Three Melt the milk chocolate in the microwave or in a bowl over a pan of barely simmering water. Take a cake pop and dip in the chocolate. Shake gently until the excess has drained off. Push into a polystyrene block. Four Make two holes in the top of the head and insert a pretzel ‘antler’ in each one. Press a sweetie nose onto the front and hold for a few seconds until attached. Repeat with all the other cake pops. Leave to set for about 20 mins and then using black icing, pipe on eyes and a mouth.

NUTELLA CHRISTMAS TREE 2 large rectangles rolled puff pastry, 1/2 jar Nutella, 1 egg, whisked, icing sugar (optional) One Preheat the oven to 190c. Take one rectangle of pastry and place it down with the short side facing you. Spread a thick layer of Nutella over it in a rough triangle shape. Two Place the second piece of pastry on top of the first, then cut out a triangle shape over the Nutella section. Discard the trimmings. Now make even cuts down both sides of the triangle, leaving an inch uncut in the centre, to keep the tree together. Three Twist each strip from top to bottom to create tree branches. Brush the pastry with the whisked egg. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until well risen and golden brown. Once baked, serve up warm or dust with icing sugar and serve cold.

Yule chocolate log 185g unsalted butter, cubed, 185g high-quality dark chocolate, chopped, 85g plain flour, 40g cocoa powder, 3 large eggs, 275g golden caster sugar, 6 mince pies or 9-12 mini mince pies, icing sugar, for dusting ONE Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Butter and line the base and sides of a 30 x 35cm Swiss roll tin with baking parchment. Separate the eggs, putting them into two large mixing bowls. Add the sugar and 2 tbsp water to the egg yolks. Using an electric whisk or tabletop mixer, whisk the sugar and yolks for about 5 mins until the mixture is light in colour and thick enough to leave a trail when the whisk blades are lifted. Sift in the flour and cocoa, then fold in lightly, using the whisk blades or a large metal spoon. Two Using a clean whisk, beat the egg whites until they are stiff, then fold into the cake mixture in three batches, again using the blades to preserve as much air as possible. Pour the mixture evenly over the prepared tin, then carefully spread to the edges. Bake for 10-12 mins, or until the cake feels firm to the touch. Put a large sheet of baking parchment on the work surface and sprinkle lightly with caster sugar. Turn the cake out onto the parchment and peel off the lining paper. Cover with a clean tea towel, then leave to cool completely. Trim a little cake from all the edges, then score along the edge of one of the long sides of the cake and roll up from there, using the paper to help you, rolling the paper inside the cake. Three To make the icing and filling, bring the cream to the boil in a small pan, remove from the heat, then break in 400g of the chocolate. Stir until it is melted and smooth. Leave to cool, then chill until it is spreadable, about 1 hr. Chop the remaining chocolate, spoon a third of the icing into a bowl, then stir them together to make the filling.

Mince pie brownies

FOUR Carefully unroll the cake, then spread all the filling over to within 2cm of the edges. Roll up the cake again using the paper to help you, then set on a board. Cut a thick diagonal slice off one end of the cake. Transfer the larger piece of cake to a board or flat serving plate. Spread a little icing over cut side of the small piece of cake and fix it to the large roll to make a stump (as photo). Spread remaining icing over the cake, then dust with icing sugar to serve.

ONE Melt the butter and chocolate in a medium bowl, either in a microwave – cooking for 1 min on High, then stirring and continuing to heat in 20-second blasts – or by setting the bowl over a pan of simmering water and stirring occasionally. Once melted, leave the mixture to cool.

185g unsalted butter, cubed, 185g high-quality dark chocolate, chopped, 85g plain flour, 40g cocoa powder, 3 large eggs, 275g golden caster sugar, 6 mince pies or 9-12 mini mince pies, icing sugar, for dusting

two Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line the base of a shallow 20cm square tin with non-stick baking parchment. Sieve the flour and cocoa into a medium bowl. Whisk the eggs and sugar with an electric mixer on maximum speed until thick and creamy, about 3-8 mins, or when the mixture runs off the beaters and leaves a trail for a second or two. Three Pour in the cooled chocolate mixture, then fold together with a rubber spatula in a figure of eight, moving the bowl round until the mixture is a mottled dark brown. Be gentle so you don’t knock out the air. FOUR Sift in the cocoa and flour mixture and continue gently folding. The mixture will look dry and dusty, then fudgy. Stop just before you feel you should, as you don’t want to overmix it. Five Spoon a little mixture into the prepared tin, then add the mince pies, leaving them whole. Scrape over the rest of the mixture, gently easing it between and over the pies. Level the top. Put in the oven for 25 mins. If the brownie mixture is very wobbly in the middle, it’s not quite done, so bake for another 5 -10 mins, or until the top has a shiny, papery crust and the sides are just beginning to come away from the tin. Take out of the oven and leave to cool in the tin. Dust with icing sugar. Cut into quarters, then cut each quarter into four squares. Will keep in an airtight container for a week and in the freezer for up to a month.

AN ECO-FRIENDLY CHRISTMAS Written by Charlotte Cooper With Christmas fast approaching it’s easy to forget how much our holiday habits impact the environment. Be proactive for our planet and read our 5 easy steps to an eco-friendly Christmas.

ith all the excitement at Christmas time, it’s easy to forget about the potentially negative impact our plastic consumption and wastage has on the environment. Although it’s primarily down to retailers to take action to stop the production of needless and unnecessary plastic, there are many things we can do to minimise our carbon footprint and increase the amount we recycle starting with the holidays, without cutting down on the festive twinkle. Here are our best top tips for an environmentally friendly Christmas that will reduce damage to the planet or ruin your Christmas spirit.

Get creative with eco-friendly wrapping paper, or find a reliable source.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in all the excitement over decorative Christmas paper, with the average household going through four rolls of wrapping paper every Christmas. This glossy paper we are used to seeing beneath the tree may look lovely, but it certainly isn’t great for the environment. The plastic used in the manufacturing process to make the paper shiny means it becomes non-recyclable. This year why not use recyclable brown paper? You could even jazz it up with more eco-friendly decorations such as fabric ribbon and string. Alternatively, you can source 100% environmentally friendly and recycled wrapping paper from various companies, such as your local post office or Rewrapped, a London-based company specialising in the production of

environmentally friendly wrapping paper, as well as cards, notebooks and more. Check out their website to get your ecofriendly Christmas off to the right start. Visit www.re-wrapped.co.uk/.

Don’t dump your decorations, eat them instead! Tinsel and baubles are usually full of plastic which can’t be recycled because of the vast amounts of glitter used in them. You may be able to box them up and use them the following year, but eventually, they’ll get damaged, broken or a little tired, meaning, in the long run, they’ll be disposed of anyway. An environmentally-friendly (and ever so tasty!) alternative this year is to hang home-baked Christmas goodies from the tree. BBC good food has a selection of step-by-step recipes you can follow to create some tasty treats for the tree and the rest of your home, including sugar charms, gingerbread bunting and snowy Christmas tree biscuit decorations. Eco-friendly Christmas crackers and food packaging. Every cracking Christmas dinner is completed with Christmas crackers, but all those plastic prizes more often than not get thrown away, never to be seen again. This year try to do a little research before you head to the shops and aim to

purchase plastic-free recyclable crackers, as well as recyclable food packaging. Waitrose and John Lewis have said they’ll stop selling Christmas crackers containing plastic toys from 2020. This is part of plans to cut down on single-use plastic. Other supermarkets are starting to make changes too; Asda removed plastic windows and film from their mince pies last Christmas, Sainsbury’s has removed all plastic packaging from its Christmas crackers this year, and Tesco has switched to a plastic-free, biodegradable glitter on its Christmas trees, plants, and flowers this year. They have also removed glitter from their own-brand wrapping paper, tags and Christmas cards. Marks and Spencer have also removed glitter from its entire Christmas range this year, and have said they’ll be making all of their cards and giftwrapping products glitter-free by the end of 2020. Do your research and check the information when you shop to ensure you are making responsible and environmentally friendly choices. If you’re feeling particularly creative you could go one step further and make your own Christmas crackers this year. There are several websites you can check out where you can purchase eco-friendly craft supplies and find easy step-by-step guides and suggestions for sustainable cracker prizes. UK company, the littlecraftybugs (www.littlecraftybugs. co.uk/), has a selection of 100% recyclable

natural craft crackers on their website. All of their non-foil crackers, together with their hats, jokes, and snaps are fully recyclable.

E-cards - a waste-free alternative to spread your holiday greetings. There are many reasons why sending a digital card this Christmas is a great idea. Firstly, you can send the e-card from the comfort of your own home — no need to keep running to the post office in the chilly weather, and it’ll save you the cost of postage! Secondly, you can make it personal by adding a Christmas family photo and a personalised message. Finally, and most importantly, it’s environmentally friendly! Most store brought Christmas cards are covered in glitter. Glitter is not good news for the environment as it’s effectively tiny pieces of plastic (that often get washed down the sink and end up in our oceans), and cards that contain glitter cannot be recycled. Besides, when you choose not to use paper, you’re doing your bit to save trees.

What about a ‘green’ Christmas tree this year? Most Christmas trees are green, but not all trees are eco. The big question is, should you buy a fake or a real Christmas tree this year? Artificial Christmas trees are made from a combination of plastic-based materials and therefore cannot be recycled. Although greener options are available, according to the Carbon Trust, you would need to box up, store, and reuse your artificial Christmas tree at least 10 times to keep its environmental impact lower than that of a real tree. However, if you do prefer the look of an artificial tree (or perhaps you need to for allergy reasons) you can still be mindful about the tree you choose by seeking out trees made of recyclable or degradable materials. You can also try looking in your local charity shops for donated trees that you could spruce up and re-home, or online sites such as Freecycle. Visit www. freecycle.org/ for more information. Real Christmas trees require no manufacturing process and are 100%

recyclable. Although there are some concerns over the environment in terms of cutting trees down and losing habitat for wildlife, Christmas trees are not usually grown in wild forests but are a crop like any other (always check with whoever you are purchasing from to make sure the tree was not wild forest sourced). Therefore purchasing a real Christmas tree from a local farmer helps to support the rural economy. Once Christmas trees are harvested, more are planted in their place. The Christmas trees that are purchased and decorated (hopefully with ecofriendly and recyclable products!) can by mulched for landscaping or turned into woodchips once Christmas is over. Recycle Devon offers a Christmas tree collection service to recycle your trees responsibly.
