BUSINESS PROFILE From a local security guard job in Tesco Metro, to a self made business man with over 120 staff members .The founder of the business, Kenyon Barker, had been in the security industry for a number of years before deciding to form his own company. We chat with Kenyon to find out what he had to go through to get to where he is today.
“I formed my own security company because I’ve worked in that area for years. I have seen the good and bad companies. This gave me the motivation to decide the only way to bring the security industry above and beyond the standard set was to form my own company and be selective on the quality of staff we offer to our clients”. “My first security job was when I was aged 21. I worked at Tesco Metro in Plymouth town centre. It was interesting! It was all new to me at the time”. As Kenyon found out, Security can of course be a risky profession. In just his first week of employment, he was attacked by a customer attempting to steal goods from the store. “I had no official training, but when somebody is coming at you the body has three natural
reactions, fight, flight or freeze. Mine was fight in that moment!”
The human body has three natural reactions, fight, flight or freeze
Luckily, Kenyon was not hurt in the process and after working his position for 8 months, family matters meant that Kenyon made the move to Northumberland. He was eventually employed by Aspers Casino in Newcastle. “At this point, I had my Close Protection license. There were a lot of footballers coming in, and a lot of high end clients wanting to spend money. It was a high profile job”.
Kenyon tells us of a major incident that happened at a Phoenix bar when he was 25 years old. “I was working for Phoenix Security, a very professional agency”. Kenyon and another Security operative were attacked by a group of 15 individuals”. This resulted in me being off my feet for over a year”.
“
“
Speaking to Kenyon, it is clear to see that respect and professionalism are his top priorities when it comes to his business. With offices based in Newton Abbot, KB Security has teams in both London and Plymouth to offer security to a range of nationwide events.
“
“
W
ith over 10 years in the industry, KB Security and Training have worked on festivals, private events, close protection and corporate events. The business has had a natural growth since its inception, due to Kenyon building its reputation as a professional, reputable and friendly firm.
I live by a motto, it is what it is. Life is always going to throw things at you. Stand there and just take it on the chin “Of course, that night I took it on most of my body! Cuts, bruises and bones, they heal. I was in hospital for 3 weeks and had physiotherapy for a while following on from that”. At this point, Kenyon was unable to work so had to take the time out to rebuild himself. Resilience is clearly something Kenyon has in abundance, as this didn’t stop him from pursuing his career path further. After building up his employment portfolio rapidly

through his diverse range of jobs, Kenyon explains that he was working in Close Protection abroad when everything changed. Kenyon’s relationship with his wife at the time had failed, and after attempts to rekindle for the sake of the couple’s two children wasn’t working out, Kenyon’s ex-wife moved up north with the children. “I was a complete mess. I am physically resilient yes, but mentally- I think everybody has a breaking point”. At this point in his life, Kenyon was living and working in Cornwall. “It was 9 months after a clean break with my ex-partner when she had started to go downhill”. 5 years ago, at the age of 27- Kenyon made the decision to quit everything and fight for custody of his children. “I had absolutely nothing for them. No clothes, no bed for them to sleep in. My dad was amazing; he helped financially so I could get myself started up again”. Kenyon took on a role as a health care assistant at a nursing home in Plympton, as the hours meant he could spend more

KB SECURITY AND TRAINING
Kenyon had worked for Expedient in 2012 at the Olympics. “It was such a great experience. Expedient are like family to me now. They helped me set up my own business and continue to support me to this day”. Expedient were Kenyon’s only client in the early stages- so he was very picky on staff as he was keen to impress. “I am not an interview person. I like to see people working, see what they can do”. Having a small team enabled Kenyon time to learn how to grow and run the business successfully.
“
“
Being the managing director of KB Security and Training LTD is a challenging, yet rewarding experience
Kenyon prides himself on the fact that, until recently he hasn’t had to advertise to gain work or staff. He explains that this is down to the reputation he has built for both himself and his company. “Word got out that I was a good person to work for, so I had people approaching me”. In regards to taking on new staff, Kenyon
“I keep my staff happy and that is extremely important. We do a lot of travelling, a lot of time away from our families. I have to make sure that what they do is acknowledged and rewarded”.
“
Respect is very high on my list of priorities, I respect people and I expect to be respected in return. Because of this my team is like one big family, we have that understanding
“If anyone needs me, they can call up at stupid o clock and I will do everything I can to help them. I will always be a friend first, but my business comes just beforethey don’t understand what I mean by that but it makes sense to me!”
All together I have 80 SIA and on average about 80 stewards at present. Steve Middleton is my operations manager, and his partner Jayne Elphick does my HR. Without them I would have buckled a long time ago. I took them on this year and they’ve been a real asset to the company”. KB Security offer their own training programmes. Kenyon has a contract with Western College, meaning that he can help people through the necessary courses and offer them an application form to potentially work for him if successful. “I train staff myself. First aid, PIsecurity is your first point of call. I want my staff to be confident and react straight away in the event of someone approaching them for help”. “All stewards hold, or are working towards their NVQ level 2 in spectator safety. All Supervisors
who hold door supervisor licence have, or are working towards their level 3 and all managers have or are working towards their level 4 spectator safety qualification”.
“
KB Security was first formed when Kenyon had been working as a healthcare assistant for a year. He decided to set up his own company, working self employed. “I was approached by a previous employer- Expedient Security, to come and be a manager for them”.
explains the importance of a good personal image. “I think this comes from my military background. If you walk in looking like you’ve never seen an iron, it isn’t going to work. I want my guys to look presentable and respectful”.
“
time at home. “I needed to get my children sorted; I needed to get myself sorted”.
“
The level of qualification and constant training enables us to give a better quality service for all events
Kenyon tells us how, for the past two years they’ve been brought in to run Arcadia at Glastonbury. For anyone who isn’t familiar with the set up, it really is a spectacular event! “I absolutely love it. There are huge risk assessments involved in something as big as Glastonbury”. Kenyon explains how the security profession is extremely reactive, and you can’t anticipate anything. “When you get a rush from the main stage you have to prepare for that. 20,000 people already there, and in 10 seconds you’re going to get a surge of another 20,000. You have to constantly think on your feet”. So what does the future hold for KB Security? Kenyon explains that he would love to run his own event. “I would like provide the entire security, solely through KB. It would run under my banner, and my logo”. Kenyon also tells us that he would like to break into the Plymouth market a bit more. “I have successful contracts in London. Plymouth is my home. We have contracts with local boxing events but I would love to grow this further”. With Kenyon’s resilience, determination and professionalism, there is absolutely no doubt that if he continues to grow his business, with the help of his team- these goals will soon become reality.

Every student at Plymouth’s newest secondary school has been taught CPR as part of Restart A Heart Day.
M
ore than 150 students and staff at Scott Medical and Healthcare College were taught the techniques as part of the British Heart Foundation’s Restart a Heart initiative. The BHF says that if you suffer a cardiac arrest out of hospital in the UK, you have less than a one in ten chance of surviving so the aim of Restart A Heart Day on 16 October was to train as many young people as possible and Sherri Mann, one of the College’s personal coaches, ran CPR sessions throughout the day. Mrs Mann - a qualified first aider- ran the sessions with help from Justin Sharples, South Western Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust’s Assistant Community Responder for Devon. “It was quite a challenge to train so many students in one day but with the excellent BHF training film and with Kevin Sharples being here we are really pleased to have trained so
many people in one day,” she said. Mr Sharples said it was “absolutely fantastic” that the students were being trained.“Early CPR can make a huge difference,” he said. “The students were really engaged and enthusiastic and asked informed and relevant questions.” Year 12 student Bleona Recica said the training was “very important”.“I didn’t know how to do it before today,” said Bleona, who is planning to become a naval nurse. “I would feel confident doing it now – though of course I hope I won’t have to use it too often.” Fellow Year 12 student Demi Graham – who hopes to go on to be a speech and language therapist – said the training was “good fun”. “That’s what it’s like being at Scott College, it’s really focused and hands-on, I love it here.”
There is a Year 12 Open Evening for current Year 11 students on 29 November – details are on the website

Scott College is a new state school which opened in September for young people planning to pursue a career in the medical and healthcare sector welcoming students from Plymouth, Devon and into Cornwall.

Remembrance Day in Plymouth
R
emembrance Day, otherwise known as Armistice Day, marks the day the First World War ended in 1918, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month. On the nearest Sunday to the 11th of November, the annual Memorial Day commemorates and honours those who sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom. Services are held all over the country in which a two-minute silence is held precisely at 11am, before the laying of the wreaths. The ceremony has been televised every year by the BBC since 1946, and is the longest running live televised event. The national ceremony is held in London at the Cenotaph where the Queen will lay the first wreath, followed by the Duke of Edinburgh. In Plymouth, people will gather, as one, on Friday 10th November at Plymouth Pavilions for the Plymouth Remembrance Festival. The prominent Plymouth Naval Memorial on Plymouth Hoe is a familiar sight for residents of our city, commemorating the loss of 7,251 sailors of the First World War and 15,933 of the Second World War. Remembrance is a large part of modern British life, culture and heritage and the poppy, species name papaver rhoeas, is the symbol of Remembrance and hope. The poppy was adopted as a symbol after Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies to write the
famous poem titled In Flanders Fields. The poppies grew in their thousands; a symbol of colour and life amongst a landscape that had been destroyed and devastated by war.
supporting shops including Sainsburys and WHSmiths. This year, Remembrance Sunday will be held on November 12th.
“We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields...” The origin of the red Flanders poppy as a symbol of Remembrance was the inspiration of one American woman, Miss Moina Michael, who vowed to always wear a red poppy as an emblem of keeping the faith with all those who fell in the war. The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal has run annually since 1921, asking everyone to support the appeal by wearing a poppy. Poppies will go on sale this year on October 26, 2017. They will be available in many shops from that date but most people won’t start wearing their poppies until October 31. The money raised from these poppies provides financial, social and emotional care to members and the families of members who currently serve, or have previously served, in the British Armed Forces. In 2014, the legion fundraised over £53,500 with the help of the people of Plymouth. They presented their gazebo and vintage military vehicles in the city centre, plus placed stands outside

RADIO PLYMOUTH’S BEEN OUT AND ABOUT... Over 30 local acts entered and were whittled down by a panel of judges at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel. The finalists had the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience at the Market, competing for a £500 cash prize and the chance to perform on the Hoe on Bonfire Night. The final 3 finalists were “Glass Curtain”, a local pop and rock cover band, Leona Skye, an 11 year old singer from Whitleigh, and Kallie Hudson, a holiday park entertainer and tribute act singer from St Budeaux. Following a vote by radio listeners, Kallie Hudson was announced as the winner – you will be able to see her perform on the Radio Plymouth stage, just before the firework display on the Hoe on 5th November!

O
n 30th September, Radio Plymouth’s Drivetime Presenter Neil Walker hosted Plymouth’s Top Talent on a stage on Cornwall Street, sponsored by Plymouth Market’s Grand Day Out event, celebrating their recent refurbishment.
Grand Day Out created an incredible buzz and really showcased the Market as a unique and irreplaceable shopping venue. As well as being treated to tasters of freshly cooked seafood from Michelin chef, Jacques Marchal, shoppers were enthralled by demonstrations from several stallholders including Coronet Engravers, Drab to Fab and Robins and Moore. There were also street entertainers on hand to add to the festivities: particularly captivated by all the food stalls in the Market were two cheeky human-sized seagulls! Market Manager Matthew Jones said “We’re really proud of the difference the refit has made to the Market and it was great to see so many people at our Grand Day Out, rediscovering what a surprising and friendly place it is. “The Market is full of great value produce and products and we’re becoming well-known for our incredible mix of excellent eateries and cafes – it’s well worth visiting us in the West End of the city to see what you’ll discover.”

BUSINESS PROFILE Established in 2007, Richardson Legal Services are a client friendly firm with experience in a range of specialist Legal Services and Estate Planning Services. We speak to David Richardson at his office in Falcon House, Langage Business Park to see how he got to where he is today.
R
ichardsons Legal Services specialise in the needs of over 60’s and their wealth of experience means they offer services such as Wills and Probate, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Home Protection Trusts. David Richardson, the owner of Richardsons Legal, tells us how he has been running his own business since he was 30 years old. “I’ve had many businesses over the years, I can’t remember exactly how many! I became involved in law when I was young. I went to the College of Commerce in Bristol and studied a number of subjectsone of which was Civil Law”. David explains how he passed all of his exams but didn’t pursue any of his qualifications. “I became a salesman, selling postal franking machines. I used to meet quite a lot of lawyers through this, and always thought I would love that job!” David kept this aspiration on the backburner whilst he opened up a small chain of coffee shops in Plymouth and Torquay. This was going well for him until the big corporate chains moved in and unfortunately, David’s business suffered as a result. “I decided I needed a change. I looked into Will writing, and thought it was a great way of getting a foot in the door of the law business”.
“
“
In 2007, David studied at the College of Will Writing, and upon passing his exams, immediately decided to start his own business
“I was living in East Devon at the time, in Honiton. Of course, business didn’t exactly boom there- the population wasn’t great. I became a little despondent about it and decided that myself and my partner, Alison should move to Spain”. David and Alison made the move, however, business didn’t grow as expected. The couple moved back to the UK in 2010, after just under a year of living abroad. Once back in the UK, David decided to move to Plymouth. “I really wanted the business to do well and Plymouth has a population of 260,000- a lot more than little old Honiton!” David decided to advertise in a local magazine, and after the first month he received a lot of business as a result. “It was only £1000 turnover so I thoughtthis is okay. I gradually increased the advertising budget and placed my services in more magazines. I set myself a target for business of £2000 in the second quarter, £3000 in the third quarter and so on”. “In East Devon I spent as much on marketing as I was taking. However, in Plymouth this was different. It could come out as a percentage because it was working so well for me”. David hit all of these advertising targets; however he explains that he was still working in a room from home, and the work load was starting to reach the point of being too much to handle on his own.
“
I took on an office at Falcon House in January 2012. I hired an assistant named Joe who was extremely good and so the business grew. It grows at 50% a year, almost every year

David Richardson
Richardson’s Legal Services has seen its share of trying times. In 2015, the company had six staff members, due to David anticipating large business growth. “Unfortunately when the Referendum came along and the decision was Brexit, this put the country in turmoil and the business was hit very badly”. So much so that David had to make 3 staff redundant and re-structure the business to survive. “I came up with some lower budgets and achievable targets under the circumstances and got the business going again. This is the first full year we’ve completed since that time; and we’ve had record sales and net profits. We’re doing very well, and next year we are looking to continue our growth by 50%”. Looking at the business structure now, Richardsons Legal Services consists of David himself, Monica who has recently been appointed Director, and Bev who has recently joined the firm as an administrator. David tells us that Monica, who was previously an Office Manager in Italy- has been with him since 2013. “Monica used to be my personal assistant but she came to me last year

- RICHARDSONS LEGAL SERVICES asking to become a practitioner. She studied and went to the College of Will Writing- took her exams and passed”. Monica now oversees every client regarding Wills, Power of Attorney and Trust work. “She is brilliant!” David tells us.
“
David explains the importance of trusts and the fact that they are not necessarily well understood. “People are concerned that their children won’t inherit their estates. There are a lot of threats happening. Our average client is 73 years old and at that age, you start to worry about these things”.
TESTIMONIALS “Very happy with the service. Friendly and very helpful! Were happy to answer all questions asked and made everything very simple” -Mrs T, Ivybridge We received clear, concise information from Mr Richardson and his team to enable us to make the right decisions. Your patience and attention to detail were exceptional” - Mrs & Mrs C, Plymouth We would like to thank David for his professionalism, patience and friendliness in helping us set up the trust and Powers of Attorney. Also to thank Monica for help in answering my queries. We recommend the company to anyone contemplating setting up a trust” - Mr & Mrs M, Saltash Very easy to talk to staff and all questions explained in laymans terms. Friendly and professional, not rushed or pressured” - Mr T, Plymouth
Monica Salvioni Reeder and David Richardson
Richardsons Legal Services offer free consultations, and free advice for life. Monica tells us that if someone has a change of circumstance, they can just call up and someone will be there to help them. David explains that every client receives a customer survey, of which they score an impressive 95%. “The prominent results were friendliness. Answering peoples questions in an easy to understand language, that’s also very important”. Monica elaborates on this; “If people come and see me, they usually come in very stressed. But when they leave, the best present they can give me is their smile”.
“
“
“
We offer free consultations, and free advice for life. No obligation, no pressure. I find out peoples circumstances, what they want to achieve and advise them. It is completely up to them whether they want to carry on with us or not
David tells us that there are many good reasons for putting a property in Trust. “Lots of people can make a claim on a will after you’re goneand succeed. But in a trust, this cannot be challenged. Children will get their inheritance, there’s no probate needed, it saves money and more importantly it saves stress. You’re automatically protected against any unforeseen eventualities”.
It can be very painful sometimes; I understand why- it’s a stressful situation. No one leaves without having a cup of tea, and if they leave with a smile- that means I’ve done a good job!
As a qualified practitioner, Monica oversees clients regarding Wills and Probate. She wants to stress the importance of young people thinking about making a will. “It is extremely important; especially if you have children. Your children will not necessarily go to
the people you want if anything were to happen, so you have to appoint a guardian. It is very much the mentality of ‘I will do it tomorrow’ but you need to do it now. You can never be too early”. In regards to a 5 year projection for the business, David tells us that he wants to continue the 50% growth each year. “I would love to get it to a stage where we have three practitioners- it’s definitely heading that way as me and Monica find ourselves extremely busy!” We ask David what he thinks are the reasons behind the past year being more successful than others. “I think we are just getting more established. With a combination of the advertising and word of mouth, more people have heard of us. They may have even seen me on the back of a bus!” David holds free seminars around Plymouth, which he has been offering for the past three years. “We put these seminars on so people can come along at their own accord and not feel isolated. They can learn about what we do in a friendly environment with other people”. If you are interested in attending a seminar see the website below for more details.

BUSINESS PROFILE Austin Burn-Jones once had little faith in Holistic Medicine. He now runs two clinics in Devon after being one of the first in the South West to specialise in Bowen Technique and bodywork Therapy. Bowen serves to help those with conditions that cannot be effectively improved with modern medicine, through specific gentle non-invasive movements on the body. A year after our first visit, we catch up with Austin to see how things have changed since we last spoke.
Austin was one of the first people on the South West to practice Bowen, and he explains that it works on something called ‘fascia’. “We are looking at the bag that holds the muscle. That is what fascia is. Every muscle fibre has an envelope of fascia around it and that is, in essence what makes us move. They have different receptors, and those receptors only respond to slow gentle pressure”.
Austin explains that in principal, every cell in your body does that. “If I stimulate pain, you’re likely to tighten up. The theory behind Bowen is not to stimulate pain so the body can loosen up”.
“
This is why, what appear to be gentle therapies can sometimes outperform other types of therapies. It doesn’t make them better or worse, it simply means that your body is having a different reaction
Austin specialises in whiplash, frozen shoulder, migraines and back painthis is because Bowen is particularly good at resolving those issues, and it’s considerably gentler than Osteopathy or chiropractic treatment. People of all ages can benefit, Austin’s youngest client was just 5 weeks old, and his oldest aged 97. Since we last spoke, Austin has written his first book. “I was hoping to have it in my hands by this time. I started writing in February and it is the result of 7 years procrastination!” Named ‘The Offensive Health Book’, Austin says it serves to debunk a few myths and set the record straight with regards to a healthy lifestyle. “Writing is a totally new avenue for me and I’m finding it very interesting. The hardest part is the last bit. Making sure it flows, ensuring it makes sense to non

medics. My wife and I are both cross eyed from proof reading so much! It’s been a labour of love”. “My book is directly related to Bowen due to the fact that it is general health education”. Austin tells us that the majority of his patients wouldn’t need to see him in the first place if they had a better grasp on their own general health.
“
“
The aim of Bowen, Austin tells us, is to approach the body as a whole, and remember that everything connects. The therapy consists of gentle, rolling motions on the skin or through light clothing on precise points of the body to effectively resolve long-standing problems that a GP might not be able to assist with. These movements are designed to stimulate the tissue and nerve pathways, creating a focus for the brain.
“If I shout at you to sit down, you may well sit down but I may get a slap for being so rude! Whereas, if I politely ask you to please sit down, one could argue that I am getting the same result but without the kick back- you’re actually working with me”.

ustin refers to his work as ‘complementary therapy’, not an ‘alternative’ as he considers what he does is ‘as well as’ and not ‘instead of’ mainstream medicine and/or a healthy lifestyle. Holistic therapy’s popularity is certainly growing, and has fast become the sought- after treatment in the UK.
The Offensive Health Book, Austin’s first written publication will be available via Amazon. Hard copies will also be available at his clinics and lectures
“Doctors have on average seven and a half minutes with each patient, whereas I have the privilege of an hour with each of my clients. There is an awful lot you can find out in an hour. A lot of what I do

Great Blue Hole, Belize
- BOWEN THERAPY DEVON is educating people. Bowen is a physical technique but we have to get behind the reason why someone comes to me in the first place”.
“
“
You have to help patients see the connection and join the dots between something that is going on in their life and their physical symptoms
“Everything is connected. The problem with mainstream medicine is that we’ve become so detached thinking that everything is separate, we think that somehow our psychology is separate to our emotions or from physical problems, and yet if you’re angry about something you might grit your teeth. You’ve converted an emotion into something physical. This then leads to a headache or earache if you carry that emotion for long enough. The same goes for anxiety; it is a literal gut feeling”.
Because of this, Austin stresses the importance of understanding that Bowen needs to be accompanied by a positive, healthy lifestyle for the best results. Simple lifestyle changes such as drinking enough water and keeping a food diary can really help to distinguish physical symptoms and their lifestyle connection.
“
“
There is no system in the human body that doesn’t rely on the nutrition you give it. You can’t have a bad diet and expect to feel well
In Bowen, there is the combination of time and treatment. “I could work on you one or three times in one week and it won’t make a difference”. Austin explains that once the body has the message it needs to repair, it literally needs time to do just that. “Don’t rely on me to fix you; Bowen is helping your body get stronger and stronger so you need me less and less”. Austin tells us he is amazed that in his 15 years of experience, he is continuously expanding his knowledge. “You can learn the techniques, but knowing why you are doing that is what takes time. I have never stopped learning!” As well as a Masters in Athletic Therapy, Austin also has a degree in Osteopathy. He tells us that this can help him to distinguish what a patient’s pain isn’t. “If someone comes to me after trying many therapies, I can gauge what they have already tried; knowing that hasn’t worked so I can approach it from a different angle”. There is currently no charter for practicing Bowen, and Austin explains that you can only learn the therapy, and be insured and regulated by two colleges. “Bowtech is based in Australia and The College of Bowen Studies is based in Durham in the UK. Paula Essen, who runs the UK college does a lot of work with the NHS which is interesting. She is also a sports therapist so I learnt a lot from her”.
In regards to the consultation process, Austin knows that Complementary therapy isn’t for everybody. “Of course I would love to say that Bowen fixes everything but it simply doesn’t. It’s amazing for certain things so for that reason I have to work out whether Bowen is right for the patient. With any therapy, you should be seeing improvements after one month and if you’re not, then maybe it’s not right for you”. Austin will always refer his patients elsewhere if he feels they are not benefiting from his help. If you would like to learn more about how Bowen Therapy works, get in touch with Austin who can explain the process further and how it could benefit you. He has clinics based in Totnes and Exeter, and his book- The Offensive Health Book, will soon be available for purchase. “Engaging with improving your health is a great first step for anyone, so I enjoy that first phonecall when someone starts to want to get better. I always say, just give me a call and we can chat about step 2”.

Chiropractic for neck pain Silas Keeling, Plymouth Chiropractic Clinic
W
hen it comes to reasons for visiting the doctor, only the number one cause – the common cold – beats back pain. However, as a Chiropractor I am seeing more and more people with pain and stiffness in another area of the spine, the cervical spine or more commonly known as the neck.
“
Neck pain has always been an issue but has been most common in the elderly or victims of an injury.
recommends taking a break from looking at the screen every 15 minutes. • Adopt a good posture when sitting or standing, keep the back upright and engage the back muscles. • Specific posture exercises, ask your Chiropractor to show you these. A study done by Dr Bronfort, a leading Chiropractic researcher, compared the short and long term improvements to neck pain patients when under Chiropractic care, pharmaceutical care and those given daily home exercises.
”“
So why the recent increase? Addictive apps such as Candy crush, Facebook and Instagram are meaning we spend more time than ever on our smartphones and tablets, which in turn has increased the incidence of a painful condition which has been aptly named ‘Text neck’. Text Neck is a result of people spending extended periods of time with bad posture whilst using these hand-held devices. Hanging your head forwards whilst looking down at the screen for long periods of time leads to tight and painful shoulders, chronic and reoccurring headaches and most commonly neck pain. The issue is that the time when people are most likely to use their smart phones is the time when they would usually be getting a break from poor ergonomic positions. Children are coming home from being hunched over in school and going straight on their hand-held devices, adults are finishing work then going on their smart phones during the commute home, and even the elderly are filling the gaps between reading, crosswords and knitting by unlocking the next level on their favourite iPad games.
The results showed that patients under Chiropractic care and those doing daily home exercises improved significantly better than those on medication, with fewer side effects.
Silas Keeling- (Doctor of Chiropractic)
75% improvement in pain, compared to approximately 25% of patients in the supervised exercise group, and nearly 20% of the home exercise-only group. A big win for Chiropractic patients!
”“
Not only that, but those under Chiropractic care had a more lasting improvement than those taking medication.
Another study looked at 241 patients who were over 65 years old and who suffered from chronic neck pain. The patients were divided into three groups: one group received chiropractic adjustments with home exercises, another group received supervised exercises with additional home exercises, and the third group just did home exercises. After 12 weeks of treatment, over 60% of chiropractic patients had at least a

A big part of our job is helping our patients look at their daily routines and see where they are going wrong. Educating them on how to improve their posture and reduce their bad habits. By coupling this with specifically tailored adjustment visits to help their spinal joints move better, we are able to get patients out of pain but more importantly teach them how to prevent it reoccurring.
As a result of all this, health care professionals such as Chiropractors are seeing an increase in the incidence of neck pain and neck pain related conditions. But there is something you can do about it. The UCA (United Chiropractic association) released this advice to combat text neck: • Bring the device to your eye level. If you are using the device in bed or on the sofa then use a cushion or pillow to prop the device up to reduce the bending of the neck.

BUSINESS PROFILE With over 30 years experience in the financial industry, it’s safe to say that David Cater has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to advising. Having recently become part of Manning and Company, David has found that the support from this new partnership has helped his business to grow. We meet at his office at the Watermark in Ivybridge, to find out a little bit more about his history.
In 1987, David was 23 years old and working on a building site with his father. He tells us a story of how he was walking down Totnes high street one day, and came across a woman who had broken down in her Ford Capri. “I saw this damsel in distress, so of course I went over to help. She told me she had broken down so I offered to walk her to the nearest garage”. Naturally, the pair got chatting and David learnt that the woman was a financial advisor. “I thought, that sounded interesting. We got talking more and more and to be honest, at this point I was working with my dad but with no disrespect, I had no career path there, so this seemed like a good opportunity’’. Shortly after, David attended a seminar in Torquay recommended by the woman he had helped. “You’ve got to remember- this was the mid to late 80’s, so it was very Del Boy with the red braces! You’re going to make lots of money- all of that. The pound signs were lighting up in my eyes!” David immediately got sucked into the razzmatazz, and signed himself up. However, the pull of the presentation wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, as David explains it was back in the days of commission only sales. “At the time I was with a girlfriend of three years, we had just had our daughter and bought our first home. It was really tough!” David stayed with the company; then named General Portfolio for just under a year before moving on.
34 November 2017
Finance is an ever changing industry. David soon found that his position had become more of a selling role, after the company decided to rationalise and remove the Home Service. “I wanted to move out of that area. The job also had extremely unsociable hours so I wasn’t seeing my family as much as I’d have liked”. David left the Prudential in 1993. This then happened again after 8 years working as a Branch Advisor and Sales Manager for Halifax Building Society. Halifax merged with Bank of Scotland, and job roles were once again rationalised.
“
It is a constantly changing business but it’s an enjoyable one. No question, the best part is when you’re out seeing people
“I effectively had two options, take a voluntary redundancy package or demote my position back to branch Advisor”. I had been in the industry long enough to be confident that I could find another job, so I took voluntary redundancy. I took 5 months out, it was nice having time to catch my breath!” David started applying for jobs once again in the new year, and secured a branch advisor position for HSBC. After 7 years, David’s job role changed to a commercial IFA, to service the needs of business clients. This was mainly giving advice to directors and shareholders, rather than individuals. “I really enjoyed
Call OM Plymouth 01752 691007
it. You were going out to see clients so it was a different environment; it was a more customer faced role”. The main turning point in David’s career came when he decided to leave HSBC after 11 years. Stressful sales targets meant that the job wasn’t what it was when David had first applied.
“
“
“I certainly didn’t know that I wanted to go into financial services when I was younger. I left school with seven O Levels, and one A level- which was economics as it happens!” David went to King Edward the Sixth Community College in Totnes, and by the end of A levels, like many- he had had enough of education.
In 1989, David found himself working for the Prudential, as part of their home service. His job role was to collect client’s payments for services such as insurance premiums and life policies. “I stayed with them for four years. That was probably the best grounding I’ve had in the financial industry; they taught me everything and the training programmes were second to none”.
“

avid Cater is an independent Financial Advisor working as part of Manning and Co. The OM Team meet at his office based at The Watermark in Ivybridge, to delve a little deeper into his history, and find out the reasons behind starting his own business.
I wanted to stay in the industry, but I wanted to become my own boss. So, like most of us- you make that leap of faith
“At the time I had a company car, a pension, sick pay and all of the benefits. That was what I was potentially giving up but it was risk I was prepared to take”. In 2011, David decided to go self employed. He had built up a great clientele through existing customers deciding to make the move with him, and through approaching accountant and solicitor contacts, offering help to their clients if needed. “I was lucky enough to obtain referrals from
www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk
DAVID CATER- INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVISOR professional accountant contacts. It was just word of mouth really and it’s naturally grown from there”.
“
“
Most of my clients come through recommendation, which is what you want. That serves as a true representation of any business
David was a self employed Independent Financial Advisor, but working initially with an agency named Positive Solutions. “Positive Solutions served as a good way of getting set up in business’’. But David found that he wasn’t out facing customers as much as he would have liked. “As the business grew, I found that increasingly, 80% of my time was spent sat in front of my laptop sorting paperwork or on the phone chasing providers and only 20% meeting clients. It shouldn’t be like that”.
Following this realisation and a recommendation from a business friend- David Cater joined Manning and Company in April this year. “Manning’s offered me the opportunity to have the back up and support that I needed. My client bank had grown so much that I needed to service them properly. I am now able to go out and advise my clients without having to worry, as Manning’s have taken away a lot of the admin pressure”.
The Financial world is changing constantly and David needs to keep up with these changes through the ongoing qualifications and exams that he has to take. Current hot topics in the industry are Final Salary pension transfers and Workplace pensions but David and Manning’s offer advice across the range of financial areas from Mortgages and Investments, to more complex areas like Tax planning and Inheritance tax.
“
“
‘’This is a customer centric business, and they are at the heart of everything we do, so something had to change’’
‘’Everyone, whether they are an individual or a business will need financial advice at some point and that is what we are here for’’.
Your knowledge is constantly growing because the financial world just doesn’t stay the same
“The industry has changed massively over the years compared to when I first started. It was a very sales orientated job, whereas now I would hope my clients see me as a professional advisor. You’re taking a holistic approach to financial planning, not ‘oh what can I sell them”.

David Cater also offers a fee based advice service. “The customer knows exactly what they’re getting, up front. The client can also decide how they want to pay that fee”. Customer relationships are extremely important to David, and making sure he is someone they can trust is a priority.
I’ve been in the business for 30 years. I think people trust you after that length of time, and trust you know what you are doing

When David started as an Independent adviser, he was working out of an office in Cattedown. The lease was not put up for renewal, meaning David worked from home for a period of 12 months. “I actually came to have an office here through networking”. David was made aware The Watermark had offices available, put his name down on the waiting list and was successful. “It’s a good base to have and the Watermark has a great working environment. You’ve got the smaller private offices, meeting rooms, the café and every facility that you need is here. I’ve been here for four years now”. Outside of work, David is a qualified FA football coach. “I was at Torquay United for 2 years. I was an apprentice professional and I played for their youth team. If I had my time again I would love to have made it as a Pro!” David tells us that he still loves the sport, and played until his mid 40’s. Now, he is involved in Totnes and Dartington FC and oversees the Youth setup. “I do a bit of coaching when they need it. I also play golf, badly!” With over 30 years experience and a professional service tailored to his personal client base, David Cater has moulded his own success story. “The reason I wanted to start my own business is because I was tired of being targeted. I wanted to be my own boss and have that work, life balance. There is an argument to say that starting your own business brings more stress- but I really haven’t found that to be the case!”

iving in one of the most beautiful parts of the country certainly offers us an advantage when it comes to walking and exploring. There are simply hundreds of wonderful places to find and remember whether you prefer panoramic views or cool woodland areas or evocative tors on Dartmoor; there is something for everyone.
Grab your walking shoes and let’s travel to some of the most breathtaking destinations in the Westcountry. Remember your sunscreen and sunhat, your dog and your camera too, breathe in that fresh summer air and enjoy a fun, cost effective family day out. Happy Hiking! The deepest gorge in the entire Southwest is Lydford Gorge. It is a National Trust Property between Okehampton and Tavistock on the edge of Dartmoor. The gorge is surrounded by ancient woodland and wildlife and the full walk is around three miles long, and takes approximately two hours. Walking in the gorge is strenuous and arduous and the National Trust do emphasise this and suggest good walking shoes. The walk is extremely rugged, with uneven surfaces, slippery paths and vertical drops but the benefits of this riverside walk are amazing. To begin you will encounter Lambhole Wood - a mix of lime, elm, hawthorn, cherry, laurel, and horse chestnut trees and as a result, a haven for birds and animals.
Shaugh Prior
The White Lady Waterfall is not to be missed; the waterfall is 90ft high and the rushing water comes down almost vertically. Oldcleave wood is full of oak trees and then Tunnel Falls is where a series of potholes have formed due to erosion. Next is the calming Pixie Glen before you encounter The Devil’s Cauldron which you can hear before you see it with its white foaming water battering against the black rock. There are alternative, easier, and shorter routes for disabled people and those who are less fit but the sights at Lydford Gorge are well worth visiting. A walk at Plymbridge Woods and Valley offers you the chance to experience
38 November 2017
Plym Bridge
the soothing Plym River and a wide variety of wildlife. as well as trees such as oak, ash, sycamore and chestnut. Lying to the northeast of Plymouth, at the edge of the city, Plymbridge Woods comprises some 200 acres of woodland and meadows. It is hard to believe that about one hundred years ago it was the centre of local industry whereby china clay and granite were mined and transported down to Plymouth by rail. The Old Cann Quarry is a good place to spot Peregrine Falcons but many other birds such as woodpeckers, wood warblers, jays and buzzards are also frequent visitors here. Keep an eye out for mallard ducks and kingfishers along the water’s edge and don’t be too surprised to see otters, deers, stoats, badgers and weasels. The walk is pure wildlife haven. If you feel full of energy you could walk the entire length of the Plym Trail from Point Cottage, Laira Bridge, Plymouth, to Clearbrook on Dartmoor but that is 7.5 miles long. Plymbridge Woods is free to enter. Dartmoor is the largest area of wild open countryside in the whole of southern England. Its wild open heather and bracken covered moorland is interspersed with deep wooded river valleys, topped by granite tors. There are many, many walks to go on but a particular one takes in some of the better known tors. The village of Lustleigh lies east of Dartmoor, where open moorland meets the Devon countryside of wooded hills and fields. Start in the lane above Lustleigh, up the footpath into the woods. At the junction of two paths take the upper one and climb high above the River Bovey. At the end you will find Hunters Tor and the Ancient Hill Tor, follow the path down to the right and then take the dog leg to Peck Farm, returning to your car along the path on the lower slopes of the wood. The Iron Age hill fort on Hunter’s Tor is Lustleigh’s main attraction to tourists. Don’t forget that Cornwall can offer you amazing visits to the moor too. Cornwall’s highest summit is Brown Willy at 420m and there are views across the wild expanse of Bodmin moor. You may even get a glimpse of Tintagel and Fowey. Drive north east of Camelford on the A39 Bude road, take the minor road to Tregoodwell and continue to the car park at the end of Roughtor Road.

Leap over to Ivybridge and try out the Puffing Billy Track. This is an old tramway track crossing the south of Dartmoor. It climbs to 1,500 feet to give fantastic panoramic views down the south Devon coast. Originally used by the clay mining industry trams, this route forms part of the Two Moors Way, which runs from Ivybridge in the south to Lynmouth in the north.
