DURASQUARE: STRIKING, PRECISE,RECTANGULAR; YET SOFT AND FLOWING The DuraSquare ceramics effortlessly bring together apparent contradictions whilst also looking incredibly good. Clarity, precision and minimalism run through the entire programme, which is not only modern and timeless but also sustainable & durable. Stylish: The washbasins feature parallel lines made from the innovative material DuraCeram®, precise rims can be created that are just five mm thick. This maximises the size of the basin, which is also easier to clean.

Architectonic design: The above-counter basin is also available with a glazed back and all-round rim and can therefore be positioned directly in front of a mirror. Also suitable for smaller rooms: The subtle shapes of the ceramic and console of the handrinse basin create particular transparency and lightness. To complete a bathroom, it needs matching accessories. Towel rail, towel ring, brush set or paper holder are indispensable. Duravit offers a wide range of universal bathroom accessories for you to chose from. New metal console: add the finishing touch to the DuraSquare range. Available in modern matt

black or chrome, they lighten the appearance with a cool finish. Whether floor-standing or wall-mounted, the practical glass shelf creates even more storage space. The range of different colours can be used to add an individual touch. Sustainable in terms of design and material: The bathtubs are made from the innovative cast mineral material DuraSolid® and

harmonise perfectly with the washbasin design. Whether as a free standing, built-in, back-to-wall or corner version, the bathtubs offer impressively precise lines and a pleasantly warm feel.

Editor's Note... I hope everyone is out enjoying the sun this month! There are lots of exciting events happening in and around the city in May, from Bike Nights on Plymouth Hoe, to the Ocean City Half Marathon. One thing that I am personally looking forward to is Plymouth Flavor Fest, making its way to the town centre on Friday 1st of June! This summer, we are focussing on keeping it local. There is so much to offer in Devon and Cornwall- so why not enjoy the warmer weather at home this year. We have a great section dedicated to just that, with great local businesses and ideas for a fun summer at home. We had a lovely afternoon at Elfordleigh last month, and you can read about their exciting renovation progress on page 22. We also caught up with local couple Matt and Lisa to learn more about their new business venture, Kintripper. See where your curiousity takes you; hire their luxury motorhome and travel all around the EU! Enjoy this issue of OM and have a great month!

A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO BEACHCOMBING DEVONS COASTLINES Definition: Beachcombing is an activity originating from the Victorian Era, that consists of an individual “combing” (or searching) the beach and surrounding areas, looking for things of value, interest or utility.

T

his summer, inject your seaside trip with a shot of adventure and start exploring the veritable treasure trove that is Devons coast. From fossils to ancient coins and jewellery, every beach has a fascinating story to tell and treasures to be found. So swap the bucket and spade for a trowel and metal detector and start your search! Written by Libbi Chapple.

Prepare: It may seem like an obvious thing to say but make sure you are wearing the right footwear! I found out the hard way by wearing some old trainers, almost getting stuck in the mud and Emily having to carry me to the beach. You spend quite a lot of time standing in one place rummaging through the sand, so naturally the sea water is going to surface and get your feet a little wet.

Beachcombing may seem very simple, but it’s surprising how easy it is to lose track of time as you’re so focussed on finding treasure beneath the sand and pebbles.

Bring a container or a bag: Depending on how good the beach is, you could come across treasure of all sizes. It might also be a good idea to bring a seperate bag for any rubbish you find along the way.

”“

A tranquil and relaxing activity, beach combing is a great way to switch off from the stresses of life whilst collecting pretty things along the way!

After seeing an article on beachcombing, myself and our Sales Manager, Emily- took to Wembury Beach in the warmer weather last month in search of sea glass, and we were not dissapointed. Armed with empty coffee jars (we have an adundance of these at our office!) we went for a stroll across the muddy footpaths to a secluded part of the beach. We spent over 2 hours in the fresh sea air searching through the sand for sea glass of all colours and sizes, and left quite triumphant with our stash! Based off our experience, we have put together a quick guide to beach combing.

Whilst Beachcombing for treasures, why not incorporate a quick beach clean- removing any plastics, rubbish or manmade products that you come across? 12 May 2018

Why not see if there are any organised beach cleans in your area- you can meet new people who may have some helpful tips.

Be cautious: As beachcombing is a growing trend- there have been reports of people injuring themselves from objects picked up. If you see something that doesn’t look quite right, leave it alone.

Glass Beach: Russia where nature has turned pollution into beauty

Ussuri Bay in Russia was once a Soviet-era dumping ground for old glass bottles and porcelain, but thanks to the power of mother nature- the bay, near Vladivostok, now boasts one of the most beautiful beaches you’ll ever see. Over a period of many years, the waves of the North Pacific have washed the broken beer, wine and vodka bottles into millions of smooth and colorful “pebbles” that have turned the area from a no-go zone to a tourist attraction that visitors pay to see. While Ussuri Bay was once considered dangerous, authorities have now deemed it a specially protected area called Glass Beach.

Plan your trip: Beaches are vast places, so any time you go there is going to be something worth finding. There are particularly rich pickings after strong storms or gales, often hidden amongst piles of seaweed. Don’t take too much: Collect natural things sparingly. They are an important part of the strandline habitat, as food and shelter for creatures living there- an example would be driftwood. The same goes for if you come across any wildlife- admire from a distance but leave them where they are! Stay safe: Always check tides and the weather forecast. Also be aware of potential cliff falls, mud-slides and estuary mud.

OM RECOMMENDS:

KEEPING IT LOCAL THIS SUMMER...

A

s part of OM Recommends this month, we have compiled some great local days out, accommodation options, places to eat, and family friendly activities for you to try! With the focus on keeping it local this Summer, we celebrate some great local businesses who can offer fun in the sun without having to leave the UK. With the warmer months just around the corner, many of us may be thinking of ways to spend our time in the sun. Whilst mini breaks to far away destinations may be the most appealing option- we sometimes overlook the beauty and potential on our own doorstep. Devon is the perfect destination for a family holiday; from Salcombe to Dartmoor and Exeter, there is plenty of fun to be had!

LUNDY ISLAND- NORTH DEVON

1.

Due to its isolation the habitat for wildlife is often compared to that of Englands answer to the Galapagos. Lundy Island is a three-mile stretch of rock off the coast of North Devon. Here, you can get up close and personal with puffins, seals and basking sharks, as well as a huge variety of seabirds. Its 4,000 years of human history comes to life through the 42 scheduled monuments and its clutch of listed buildings. This is all set against a backdrop of stunning natural rugged beauty, making it a walker’s paradise. You can arrive by boat from Ilfracombe or Bideford several times a week. Why not turn a day trip into a weekend and explore one of the 23 unique accommodation options on the Island?

KYNANCE COVE- THE LIZARD

2.

Located on the west side of the Lizard and probably the most photographed and painted location in Cornwall, the contrast between the cove’s white sand beach and the dark red and green serpentine rock produces a breathtaking sight. There’s a steep 10-15 minute walk down to the cove but that doesn’t stop visitors who head to the beach for a family day out. At low tide you can explore the towering rocks stacks and caves. Located just above the beach is an eco-friendly café selling Cornish pasties, fresh sandwiches, baguettes, homemade cakes and cream teas along with beach goods. From Kynance there is a fantastic 2 mile scenic walk around the coast to Lizard Point, mainland UK’s most southerly point. This spot is definitely worth a trip across the bridge!

DISCOVER DEVON AND CORNWALL BY BIKE Tarka Trail: Best Family Ride The Tarka Trail is one of the countries longest continuous traffic-free walking and cycling paths, running from Braunton to Meeth. There’s lots of wildlife habitats along the route including estuary mud flats and salt marshes.

Granite Way: Best Countryside Ride This is a truly spectacular and mostly traffic-free, 11-mile cycle route through rural Devon between Okehampton and Lydford. With fantastic views of Dartmoor, you also pass the Lydford’s Norman castle and Lydford Gorge.

Camel Trail: Best views The Camel Trail is an 18 mile largely traffic free, surfaced and virtually level multi use trail which provides access to the beautiful Cornish countryside along a disused railway line between Wenfordbridge, Bodmin, Wadebridge and Padstow.

Tiverton to Bampton: Best Cultural Ride This eight-mile ride in Mid Devon takes you from the bustling town of Tiverton to the picturesque village of Bampton. On the way you pass the wonderfully gothic Knightshayes country estate, which is well worth a visit.

The Minack Theatre- Porthcurno

Whether you want to walk it, canoe it, sail it, kayak it, swim it, camp next to it, or take the train over it, the River Dart is a beautiful adventure playground for kids of all sizes and ages. You can try paddleboarding on a sunny day, or if you’re after a more relaxed experience- you can try one of the many boat tours and ferrys along the River Dart.

st micheals mount- marazion

4.

Explore the amazing island world of St Michael’s Mount and discover legend, myth and over a thousand years of incredible history. Stroll across the granite causeway where a legendary giant once walked and follow the footsteps of pilgrims. Boat hop to an island where modern life meets layers of history, discover a medieval castle, a sub-tropical paradise and a close-knit island community. Delve into the history of a fortress, a priory, a harbour and a home. There is plenty for the entire family to do if you were to take a visit to the Mount, from two unique Island shops- to a bite to eat at the Sail Loft. Leave the village behind and step through the garden gates onto the island’s Laundry Lawn, where green grass meets the blue Atlantic. Throw your picnic blanket wide, or wander to the wartime pillbox at the sea’s edge – where soldiers once kept lookout for German aircraft in World War II.

Gylly BeachFalmouth

STILL STUCK FOR IDEAS? HERE’S SOME INSPIRATION! Lundy Island- North Devon

Canoe the coves of The English Riviera Devon’s vibrant English Riviera towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham are set on one of Devon’s most beautiful and most sheltered bays where beaches, secret coves and sea bays offer the perfect opportunity to expolre!

The seal sanctuary- gweek

5.

Experience animal welfare in action at Cornwall’s only Seal Sanctuary and rescue centre. Hear about dramatic rescues and meet the seal and sea lion characters whose individual stories are brought to life during your visit. Tucked against the picturesque backdrop of the Helford River, the Sanctuary is a designated site of special scientific interest and an area of outstanding natural beauty.

BROOMHILL SCULPTURE GARDENS

6.

Broomhill is situated two miles from Barnstaple; England’s oldest borough and Gold Award winner for the prettiest floral town in Europe. The Sculpture Garden is an eclectic collection of over 300 sculptures sited on 15 acres of magnificent wild woodland valley and beautifully cultivated gardens. The sculptures are carefully placed within their natural environment to ensure the best display and appreciation. There is something for every taste; from abstract to figurative the sculptures evoke strong emotional responses and inspire future generations. The landscape itself is a work of art, with secret pathways and steps, exploring the gardens is a journey of discovery. The gardens and woodland are bursting with wildlife too!

Business Profile

See where your curiosity takes you; hire a luxury motorhome from plymouth couple Matt and Lisa and get exploring!

M

att and Lisa Hugh have been making their happiest memories out on the road for the past 20 years with their family, camping caravanning and motorhoming. Harnessing their passion for exploring- they took the plunge and decided to start up Kintripper, a luxury motor home hire in the heart of the South West. Matt Hugh didn’t know what he wanted to do when he left school- and after moving to Plymouth from Redruth, he trained as a Chef and worked in some well known establishments such as The Duke of

Cornwall, Lockyers Quay and The Mount Batten. “I moved around quite a bit until one day I realised it wasn’t for me”. At the age of 23, Matt decided he would take up one of the most in demand professions at the timeplumbing. “It took me 4 years to become fully qualified- I would work for three months without a day off but it wasn’t necessarily a tough time, you do what you have to!” After he became qualified, Matt took himself straight into business- his own business, MSH Plumbing and Heating. Fast forward 17 years, Matt and his wife Lisa are in the early stages of their brand new venture- Kintripper. Lisa tells us that she had grown up with trips away camping- and she persuaded Matt to try it out with their young family. “My granddad actually built a motor home from scratch and toured around Europe in it- I had a great childhood, always out and about”. Starting out with tenting holidays, the Hugh family gradually upgraded. “We had a break when we moved into our current home, but then I came across an old motor home- our first motor home. This started our passion for it really” Lisa tells us. So how exactly does a passion for something turn into a business plan? Matt explains how he saw an advert on TV for a motorhome, and given the growing interest in camping- it sparked an idea. After some quick research and realising there was a gap in the market for motor home hire in the South West- the rest as they say is history Lisa explains she was more reserved about the idea that Matt had- so when

he says he needs to sit down and talk, panic naturally set in. “He turned up with a huge brown envelope- I thought it was divorce papers!” Matt says, “I had to sit her down and tell her what I’d done. What Lisa didn’t know was that I’d contacted my friend who works for a design agency in Cornwall- and had a comprehensive pack of Kintripper branding to present to Lisa”. The Kintripper van is a 4 berth, meaning that it is suitable for both families and couples to get out and explore. Matt explains that a lot of thought went into the type of Motorhome they gave the Kintripper name to; “We decided on a layout with a fixed bed at the backthere’s nothing worse than rolling in late and realising you have to make up the bed before you crash”. The Kintripper Motorhome can be taken anywhere within the EU, in weekly bookings at peak season or daily bookings out of peak season. You don’t have to go far to catch a glimpse of the UK’s stunning coastlines- and with the ferry on our doorstep, Europe is only a quick hop over the channel Matt and Lisa have made sure that anyone can experience the open roadwith just a few terms and conditions. You have to be aged between 25 and 79, and have no more than 6 points on your license to be able to drive. “The prices advertised include breakdown cover, insurance and a full bottle of gas”.

www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

Matt explains that there are a number of extras on offer for those who may want them, including bike hire, bedding, a sat nav; and you can even bring your well behaved furry friend along for the ride! Prices start from £80 a day and the motor home can be on the road in the height of summer for £745 a week. Matt and Lisa put together packages for those who are interested, recently advertising a ‘Cornish mini break’ with a well thought out route to established campsites and landmarks. It’s the special touches that really put Kintripper one step ahead- The branded cushions and mugs give it a professional feel- and Lisa spends her time creating bespoke hampers for each trip. “For everyone who took the van out in April I made an Easter basket- and if anyone was venturing down to Cornwall I would make up a Cornish cream tea hamper”. We like to think outside the box, come up with new ideas- things that other people may not necessarily think of Lisa explains that they would love to expand on the planned route aspect of the business, in the near future. As Kintripper is still in its first year of operation- Matt and Lisa are being flexible with what they offer and are keen to expand as soon as possible. We ask that people call or email to enquire about our flexibility. We are looking to include an online booking form soonwe want our facilities to grow with us! Considering the business is so new, Matt and Lisa tell us that they have had a lot of interest. Having taken a short break to splurge out on a Caribbean Cruise, since they’ve returned it has been nonstop. “We are booked up for the majority of June already. We have one week available currently”. Matt stresses the importance of having a strong social

media presence- and showcasing what they offer on their Facebook page. So what does the future hold for Kintripper? “This year we have a motor home. Next year we would love to have two motorhomes!” Says Matt. “In 5-8 years time I would love to have a small fleet of vans that we can hire out to be taken all around the EU”. “The first thing you have to do is take the plunge, and we’ve done that. Lisa jokes that she doesn’t get told anything, but in all honesty I think that’s why it works so well. I am more of a risk taker and live in my headwhereas Lisa is more in touch with reality. She brings me back down to earth!” Perhaps it’s the perfect balance between the pair as to why Kintripper is set to be a success; or maybe the professional look and feel that the business has sculpted for itself. Matt and Lisa have taken a passion of theirs and turned it into something more; an exciting new venture that gives other people a chance to experience what they love so much. So what are you waiting for? Hit the open road and see where your curiosity takes you!

“Real motor and real home, thoroughly enjoyed every minute. So well equipped with all the gear, lots of extras, superbly prepared and spotless all-around. High spec heating delivers unaudible comfort, plenty of fresh water, lots of space and versatility at it’s best. Owners are really kind, friendly and helpful, even if there is a better deal for a short break, their personal attitude is second to none!” - Facebook

OM RECOMMENDS:

Shapla Balti Cuisine- Plympton

L

ocated on Ridgeway in Plympton, Shapla Balti Cuisine is an authentic Indian restaurant and takeaway, offering the finest traditional Curries, Specials, Masala’s, Biryani’s and more. Last month, the OM team went along to give this local hidden gem a try! Written by Libbi Chapple We were all excited for our evening at Shapla- and with the establishment already having such a great reputation in the local community; we certainly had high expectations! Mr Ali and his team went above and beyond to ensure we had a great night. We arrived just after 6pm and were seated near the window looking out over the busy Ridgeway. Mr Ali took our drinks order and brought over our Appetisers, crispy poppadoms and a selection of dips- the tangy mango chutney was my personal favourite. He tells us that the purpose of this pre-dinner taster is to cleanse your palette before the main event!

The atmosphere in the restaurant itself is clean, cosy and welcoming. Mr Ali and his dedicated staff are on hand for anything you might need and it’s clear to see that they treat everyone who walks through the door as friends.

Between us we sampled the Darjeeling Chicken, the Lamb Tikka, Chicken Jalfrezi and the Shapla Special Biryani. The portion sizes are extremely generous for the fair price, and the naan breads are amazing. We tried both the garlic and peshwari naan- they were so good we went back for more. The food was bursting with herbs and spices, with just the right amount of heat in everybody’s dish. We all agreed that it was genuinely the nicest Indian food we have had in a long time. Not to be defeated, we took a look at the dessert menu. A great range of choices from creamy and light coconut ice cream served in a real coconut- to rich Forrero Rocher ice cream drizzled with chocolate sauce. Emily went for the chocolate bomb cake, layers of chocolate and vanilla ice cream coupled with chocolate and vanilla sponge- delicious!

We were recommended to try the mixed platter as a starter- which consisted of lamb, chicken and pakora cooked in different herbs and spices, accompanied by a side salad and crispy vegetable samosas. Everything was presented beautifully and the smell as it approached your table made your mouth water. Moving onto our mains- Emily, our sales manager and Tom, our Graphic Designer are fans of spicy food, myself? Not so much. I am a classic Korma, Tikka Masala at a push! One thing we can all say with confidence is that the team at Shapla certainly know their stuff- and can give you honest recommendations based on your taste. Mr Ali suggested I try the Darjeeling Chicken, cooked with extra onions, green peppers, plum tomato and garlic- but with less spice!

Shapla Balti will happily personalise each dish to suit your taste- making it more or less spicy depending on your preference. 20 May 2018

Shapla Balti were finalists in the British Curry Awards in 2017 and were awarded a Tripadvisor certificate of excellence for three years running. They are a celebrated favourite in the local community and it is clear to see why!

Mr Ali and his team take real pride in what they do, and it certainly shows.

Personally, we recommend that you make the time to dine in at Shapla- to really get the full experience, but they also offer delivery to the local area. Shapla regularly host a number of charity events and special evenings, check their website for updates.

The OM Team had a great night at Shapla. We ate so much food we left seriously needing a nap! We have all agreed that we definitely need to return, the hospitality that Mr Ali and his team showed not only us- but every customer who entered the restaurant was second to none. It is clear that the friendly, welcoming approach from the Shapla team- along with freshly cooked traditional cuisine is what drives this business forward and keeps people coming back for more.

Set in 100 acres of stunning parkland on the edge of Dartmoor, Elfordleigh is truly a hidden gem. With everything you need for a short retreat all under one roof; it is the perfect location to switch off from the outside world and relax. We speak to the Directors, Angela Hujdurovic-Rack and Hasko Hujdurovic and General Manager Mike Lee, to get an insight into the exciting renovations that are bringing Elfordleigh into the here and now.

E

lfordleigh offers the peace, calm and tranquillity of an English Country House with the warmth, ease and charm of a privately owned hotel. Famously known as ‘The Pink Hotel’- Elfordleigh is undergoing a complete overhaul and its image is gradually transformed. The well-known pink exterior is in the process of being replaced with a crisp grey render. With the majority of the building completed, all that remains is the leisure area- which is on the top of the wishlist to refurbish next. The new render has really freshened up the hotels façade- and approaching the entrance on a beautiful sunny day, the hard work and time spent really is worth it.

We are refreshing the image. We are a new generation of country, keeping the style modern by using muted neutral tones, simple furniture and an uncomplicated approach. A variety of textures ensure the rooms feel cosy and timeless. The feel of an English Country house with its heritage and serenity, minus the frills and frippery.

Angela tells us that the renovation process is one of the biggest challenges she has faced so far since becoming Director three years ago. “It’s been a gradual process going into its third year; it’s such a huge task. I wanted to make sure that throughout and

after all the refurbishments, Elfordleigh stays the very special place it is and always has been”. Built in the early 1700’s, it goes without saying that the building has a rich history. Angela explains that her aim is to bring the interior into the modern day, but that it is important not to lose the traditional aspects. This is why the refurbished Elfordleigh is best described as a contemporary country house hotel. Tackling the interior design of a 35-bedroom hotel is no easy feat, but Angela has already seen her solo visions made into reality throughout the hotel. “I actually really enjoy it! I just chose what I like personally, and was confident enough to think that other people would like it too. So far we have received a lot of praise and impressed guests, this makes all the hard work worthwhile”. Next to the 35 hotel rooms and the exterior, also the restaurant, lounge, three ceremony rooms and two large function rooms with private bars are completely renovated. To make it even more special there are not one, not two, but three completely renovated bridal suites, two of which are four poster. Each has their own individual character, with a spa bath to choose from. Doesn’t this all makes you want to go and visit? Well we definitely encourage you to go!

We have everything you need for a relaxing weekend away, this is what makes us unique in Devon. We have Plymouth’s most mature and established 18-hole parkland golf course, leisure and spa facilities, a tennis court, a restaurant offering locally produced, freshly cooked food and next to our standard and premium rooms, family rooms and dog-friendly rooms. You don’t need to go anywhere!

Mike Lee, Elfordleigh’s General Manager tells us that raising awareness of what Elfordleigh has to offer is key. “We are so lucky to be located where we are. We are only a short distance from both Dartmoor and the town centre. Our position is perfect and we have to shout about it!” Elfordleigh has something for everyone. If you are local- you can take advantage of their many membership options for Golf and Leisure. There are also special Corporate membership packages. Take a dip in the 15 meter heated indoor swimming pool, relax in the sauna, steam room and jacuzzi’s, or sweat it out in the fully equipped gym. If you need a short getaway, Elfordleigh offers different packages to accommodate everyone’s needs; why not throw in a treatment from their onsite spa? Choose from a wide range of beauty treatments, Spa days and a range of Pamper Day packages. You will be guaranteed to leave feeling relaxed and refreshed! Events such as baby showers, weddings, hen parties and birthdays are welcomewith a range of rooms available to suit any size group. Their dedicated and hard working staff are on hand to make sure it’s a special and perfect day to remember.

People praise us on our friendly, warm, welcoming and genuinely interested staff members. We offer our guests a home away from home, where guests feel at ease. As part of our team we want people who are passionate about where they work, having those key individuals who can really help us push forward our vision for Elfordleigh is really important to us.

Elfordleigh pride themselves on their locally sourced food. Offering an extensive range of choices on both their A la Carte and Bar menu, Elfordleigh caters for each and every one of their guests dietary needs, including vegetarian and vegan. Next month, the A La Carte Menu will be refreshed so they can make the most of seasonal produce. At the heart of the hotel is the Brasserie, serving meals and light snacks throughout the day. Just a few steps away is the covered terrace, overlooking the golf course, perfect for those wanting to dine alfresco. “We offer a three course Sunday roast for £17.95 per person and an Afternoon tea at £19.95 for two people which can be upgraded with a glass of Prosecco” says Mike.

”“

Take it from us here at OM, the afternoon tea at Elfordleigh is definitely worth the trip! Sit out on the sunny terrace overlooking the golf course and tuck into fluffy scones and refreshing strawberries; you will feel like you really are somewhere special.

Moving onto Weddings; the recent refurbishment means that Angela and Mike are confident future couples would love to host their wedding at the Elfordleigh. “A few years ago, when the hotel was looking a little dated- couples would hesitate to book their weddings a few years in advance. But now, with the refreshed interior and exteriorthey can be confident in their surroundings and with the fact that we are only going to get better”.

Elfordleigh is also in the process of designing a brand new wedding brochure, along with a complete rebrand; website and logo. “We have a number of packages to offer couples. One package for the low season, a high season package- and an all in package that is completely hassle free with everything included. But of course we also offer bespoke wedding packages, to exactly suit the couples needs and wishes”. So what does the future hold for Elfordleigh? “A lot of people are positively shocked by our extensive renovation. We found it quite thrilling and sensational to get rid of the pink colour, we really did! But it gradually got so run down that we think this made people stop coming. We want people to pop in, spontaneously or with a reservation and realise that, actually- it isn’t like that anymore”. “We receive hand written cards thanking us for our service, for going above and beyond guests expectations and that makes it all worthwhile, you realise and get remembered that this is what we do it for. It’s very rewarding when you see people appreciate our hard work and that they are aware of how hard we try to make their visit or stay with us special and unforgettable”. Why not take advantage of the warmer weather this May; pop up to Elfordleigh for an Afternoon tea on the terrace, walk the beautiful grounds, or take a dip in the pool and relax in the stunning surroundings.

Colourful Macaroons A firm favourite, these trendy and scrumptious treats are the perfect pick me up.

Ingredients • • • •

prep: 30 mins

3 egg whites 50g caster sugar 200g icing sugar 110g ground almonds

Method 1. Line a baking tray with a silicone non-stick baking mat. Preheat the oven to 140 degrees.

2.

Beat egg whites in a bowl until foamy, then add caster sugar and continue beating until egg whites are glossy, fluffy, and hold soft peaks. Sift icing sugar and ground almonds in a separate bowl and quickly fold the almond mixture into the egg whites, using about 30 strokes.

3.

Spoon the batter into a pastry or plastic bag with a small corner cut off or piping tip and pipe disks of the mixture, about 4cm in diameter, onto prepared baking tray. If the disks holds a peak instead of flattening immediately, gently fold the mixture a few more times and retest. Let the piped macarons stand out at room temperature until they form a hard skin on top, about 1 hour. Recipe from: www.allrecipes.co.uk Image from: www.pixabay.com

CALLING PROUD GARDENERS! Gardening has long been a relaxing and rewarding hobby, and if you’ve worked hard to make your garden beautiful, why not open it up to the public? Around 3,800 gardens open their gates every year for the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) and yours could be one of them. Funds raised go towards nursing and caring charities. It doesn’t matter if your garden is big and grand, or small and quirky – as long as it’s full of character and well-loved, people will want to visit. Small back-gardens will be of interest to anyone who’s after inspiration and ideas for their own, and larger spaces make for a great afternoon out, hopefully in the sunshine!

Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Hospice UK, Carers Trust and The Queen’s Nursing Institute. Money is also donated to the National Trust and the Royal Horticultural Society to fund training in gardening skills. When you open your garden, you’ll be inviting guests to offer a small donation and you can sell cakes or even plants and gardening equipment to raise further money. The National Gardens Scheme was founded in 1927 and it continues to grow as more gardens are added to the list, and volunteers and gardeners find more imaginative ways to raise those vital funds for charity.

The NGS ask that there are adequate parking spaces nearby and refreshments (tea and homemade cake always go down well!), and access to a toilet would be appreciated. As the owner, you simply need to be on hand to welcome visitors and answer questions about your garden. You might even pick up some tips and ideas from other keen gardeners who take a look around.

The Trustees of the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) recently announced the distribution of £2.7 million to its beneficiary charities as a result of funds raised at garden openings in 2015. Beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support and Marie Curie for which the NGS is the biggest ever funder. In fact, since its foundation, the National Gardens Scheme has donated over £50 million to its beneficiary charities.

The NGS raises money for nursing and caring, which is the bedrock of its foundation. Charities which benefit from open gardens include Macmillan Cancer

The beloved Mary Berry has also jumped aboard the scheme too, taking over as President in March 2016 having opened her own garden for over 20 years.

VOLUNTEER For practical reasons, not all gardens can be made open to the public but you could still be involved. The NGS relies on volunteers in each county who help organise the many garden events every year. As expected, more volunteers are needed in the spring and summer when most gardens have their open days. Working with the NGS you’d be promoting the scheme, helping the owners of new gardens to have their first successful open day and finding new gardens to visit. Some volunteers open their own gardens, while others just love the outdoors and have a keen interest in gardening. Help and training is given to all volunteers, and it’s recommended that anyone who wants to get involved has access to a car and email. If you’re over the age of 16, fancy adding something to your CV and have an enthusiasm for gardening, get in touch with the team.

If you’re keen to be involved, get in touch with the NGS by calling them on 01483 211 535. If you want to find out more there’s plenty of information on their website: www.ngs.org.uk. You don’t have to open your garden to be a part of it, there are many ways in which you can support the scheme! Please mention OM Plymouth Magazine when responding to adverts

THE CORACLE The Coracle is as quirky as they come! An eighteen foot yurt, placed in a beautiful clearing overlooking a fishing pond at a lovely camping site in Dorset. Inside you’ll find a sea grass floor, a kaleidoscope of colourful tapestries and a wood burner. On one end sits a handcrafted, wooden fourposter bed, covered in heavy duvets and blankets to keep things snug. But it doesn’t stop there; outside you’ll have your own hammocks and deck chairs. Meals can be enjoyed on one of a kind dining tables, with logs for chairs. This would make a perfect weekend trip to get away from those busy work schedules!

There is a wood burner and a fire pit outside surrounded by big log seats, perfect to huddle around when the chilly night set in. You can also bathe with a view in the bathroom hut. The bus makes a great base to visit nearby hay for a spot of culture or the stunning Brecon Beacons for long walks and adventure spots.

With the Cornish Moors and beaches right on your doorstep, the Roundhouse retreat is one for the books!

A converted Volkswagen camper land van with a double bed and two smaller beds, plus a bell tent make up this camp on an organic smallholdings near Cambridge, just thirty-five minutes from London. A timber and cob hut houses the compost loo, there’s a covered kitchen area and the dining room is cut into an alcove of trees with handcrafted oak and beech furnishings. The Morgans make their mark at Taylor Wimpey’s Sherford development

T

he exciting purchase of a new home only happens a handful of times, but the chance to move into a brand new town is even rarer. Nicola Morgan, mum of four, shares the ins and outs of her Taylor Wimpey experience at the new Sherford development, from making a mark on a brand new home, to being a part of the caring community. “We were all so excited about Sherford, a new community, a new town, and the homes are beautiful. Prior to our current home, we were based in a three bedroom cottage but as five became six it began to feel a little too cosy”. “As much as I loved our cottage, it was missing several key features, for example there was no garden and no garage causing obvious space issues. I knew it was time to start looking for a new property, and my husband, Jason, grew up in Plymstock; we’d always wanted to return so it felt like a good time to start looking in the area”.

“We decided to investigate the options at Sherford, and whilst visiting the development we were shown around our now property. As soon as I walked in I just knew”. The bigger picture was clear in my mind; this will be our future home and we can watch our children grow with this town. I get to watch my son’s primary school being built, I look outside and see the sports pitches that my children will be playing on - it’s amazing.

“Taylor Wimpey’s Help to Buy scheme made it possible for us to secure the property, as we only had to provide a 5% deposit. This meant no time was wasted and before we knew it December rolled around and it was time for the big move.

“Since then we have been absolutely loving life in our new home at Sherford, it’s such a lovely community forming; we’ve all got to know each other and all look out for one another”. “The Taylor Wimpey team have been amazing from start to finish, nothing was ever too much. I don’t think I will ever be able to stress just how happy I am in my new home. Taylor Wimpey ticks all boxes, with regards to space, design and excellent features. We all had an input into what we wanted from our new home and we definitely got everything and more with Taylor Wimpey”. The girls all got a double bedroom and bathroom of their own, my son Marley got his garden and massive bedroom. Jason got his garage, his ensuite and study/man cave”. But most importantly I got my very own utility room and I love it! Well done to the designers, it’s not easy to please all six of the Morgan’s I can tell you.” The charming new town of Sherford, is tucked away on the outskirts of Plymouth, and property seekers are now able to secure a future in this town by reserving

one of Taylor Wimpey’s homes. Sherford residents will not only have fresh homes, but a fresh community; with a number of new facilities including schools, a health centre, a town hall, and a library, that families can be amongst the first to use. To join the Morgan family at the unique Sherford development, visit the Sales Information Centre located in Sherford, Plymouth, Devon, PL9 8AR, open everyday between 11:30am and 5:30pm. What does a healthy lifestyle mean to you? A ‘healthy lifestyle’ is a concept that has received significant attention in recent years. Depending on who you are, a healthy lifestyle can mean many different things.

P

eople often consider a healthy lifestyle as being physically fit and exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, having a particular body shape and avoiding alcohol and cigarettes. Sure, in being physically fit and well-nourished there are countless benefits to your physiology, but this does not necessarily mean you are ‘healthy’. Thinking about health as a whole, it is important to consider what contributes to our health. With the World Health Organisation (WHO) defining health as ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’, it is now widely recognized that health is a multifaceted concept, with each element being of equal importance. Exercise is only a portion of the pie, excuse the pun. However, tending to each of these aspects of health and finding that balance is sometimes not that easy. Juggling work commitments in order to pay the bills, with spending time with your friends, family and partners, we often do not give ourselves the time out to simply relax and recharge, let alone find the time to exercise. Amongst the roller coaster that is life, things can run away with you; we are all human after all.

Alternative medicine refers to treatments that are used instead of conventional medicine in order to treat an illness or condition, whereas complementary treatments are used in conjunction with traditional medicine.

these therapies include being specific to your personal needs, non-invasive; causing few if any side-effects, and as previously mentioned are often enjoyable, relaxing experiences.

You may have experienced or have an awareness of such therapies including massage, acupuncture, reflexology, aromatherapy, hypnotherapy and yoga, as well as counselling, physiotherapy, chiropractic and sports therapy just to name a few.

The stereotypical view of talking therapies including hypnotherapy, counselling and psychotherapy are way off the mark. If you immediately think of laying on a couch talking about your childhood or a swinging pendant then you may find it interesting to know that this is a myth.

“we often do not give ourselves the time out to simply relax and recharge, let alone find the time to exercise” These therapies and professions are fantastic approaches that you can use to look after your physical, psychological and social well-being as they often share a focus on the integration of treating the mind, body and spirit. The benefits of

Talking Therapies

Talking therapy may include discussing the past if it is helpful in a particular situation, but current therapies focus on solving problems in the present and building a positive future to enhance your quality of life. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be ‘ill’ to benefit from talking therapies and seeking professional help is not a sign of weakness; in fact it is the opposite. In seeking help, you are taking

Keeping on top of your health With the speed and pressures of modern life directly influencing peoples’ health, there is a growing interest in the many ways we can better our health and wellbeing. Alongside the obvious examples such as taking part in regular physical activity and eating a varied diet, more people are turning to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to improve their health. CAM refers to a diverse group of therapeutic treatments with a history of origins outside of mainstream medicine and are not generally considered part of conventional healthcare.

Physical therapies are so diverse they can help you with many physical ailments but the overall goal of each is to restore physical functioning and correct movement patterns through improving your mobility and range of movement, thus helping you to recover from injury or surgery, prevent future problems and remove the need for prescription drugs.

A final thought Leading a healthy lifestyle can be a challenge with everything that comes with day to day life. However, there are qualified health professionals trained to help you with your specific needs.

positive steps to improving your state of mind which directly affects your overall health and well-being. Talking therapy has been proven to help with anger management, stress, anxiety, depression, relationships difficulties, parenting, disturbed sleeping patterns, weight management, fears and phobias, addictive behaviours, confidence and self-esteem, life direction and pursuing your goals, among many others. Many of us go through periods in our lives where we feel like things are getting on top of us and we don’t know who to turn to for help. Talking therapies however can help you to relieve these pressures, gain an understanding of feelings and emotions and take control of your life.

Physical Therapies

associated with many other problems that negatively impact our health.

“The application of treatments such as massage and acupuncture are also known to promote recovery, relieve muscular tension, stress and anxiety and promote relaxation Physical therapies are frequently used for rehabilitation from sporting and nonsporting injuries, recovery from surgery and can help you to move safely and efficiently, reduce pain and improve your fitness levels. The application of treatments such as massage and acupuncture are also known to promote recovery, relieve muscular tension, stress and anxiety and promote relaxation.

If you are looking to make a positive lifestyle change and improve your health and wellbeing, an experienced personal trainer is a good place to start. Personal trainers can not only help to improve your fitness using safe and effective exercise techniques, but they can provide you with motivation and support and they can offer nutritional advice to assist you with weight management. Depending on their level of training and experience, some personal trainers may also have additional qualifications and expertise working with specific health conditions, with injury rehabilitation or in sports massage which can often complement exercise training and help keep you in top shape. Tip: When seeking a health professional, make sure they have the relevant qualifications and experience for what you require. Working with a health professional that you feel comfortable with is also an important consideration to ensure that you enjoy your experience and complete your programme or plan of treatment. - Article written by Article by Ryan Buckle and Alice Thatcher.

Physical therapies such as Chiropractic, Sports Therapy and Physiotherapy are treatments that broadly focus on movement and incorporate manual therapy such as massage, with therapeutic exercise and the application of other treatments such as acupuncture to alleviate pain and restore functionality. They are used to diagnose and treat people with physical difficulties resulting from illness, injury, disability or ageing, such as muscular weaknesses and imbalances and movement restrictions, which often can often lead to pain. Dysfunctional movement patterns and living with acute or chronic pain can make it hard to perform activities of daily living and if not addressed can lead to reduced physical activity levels and sedentary living, which is
