S

et within a spectacular ancient valley, Dartmoor’s famous Becky Falls has been attracting visitors since 1903. Explore over 50 acres of woodland rich in wildlife, with a choice of trails to suit all ages and abilities. Try our notoriously fun boulder scramble and if you enjoy that, carry on to the Purple Trail for views of the beautiful lower falls. We also offer hands-on animal encounter shows - get up close to some of our friendly residents. Who will you meet today? They could be furry, scaly or even have 8 legs! No session is the same. Not forgetting the Animal Feeding Sessions throughout the day with our Meerkats and animals in the petting area. To help children really discover nature there are Explorer Backpacks to borrow, and a stamp trail with a prize for every child. After all this relax and treat yourself in our licensed woodland café and gift shop. There really is something for all ages, including your dog! All shows and activities are included in your entrance fee!

f you go on days out to have fun with your loved ones (rather than stand by and watch) then you’ll love The Milky Way Adventure Park, where everything’s designed so adults and kids can have a brilliant time together. You’ll find roller coasters, dodgems and – brand new for 2018 – the fast and exciting Gravity Rider donut slide. Add to these the huge indoor play areas with 3 levels of soft play and death slides, as well as gentler activities such as a mini-train, jumping pillows, Sci-Fi memorabilia, archery, bird of prey displays and entertaining live family shows – plus there are lots of attractions (including a whole play centre) for babies and preschoolers too. There’s acres of outdoor fun and more undercover space and attractions than pretty much anywhere else in the South West, so The Milky Way is a great one to head for on rainy days too.

July 2018 19

The Moorland Garden Hotel is located on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, a short drive from Plymouth and Tavistock. Nestling in nine acres of picturesque, tranquil and lovingly-tended moorland gardens, you will find the four star countryside hotel, wedding and conference venue. We speak to the General Manager; Andrew Jenkins, to learn a little more about this hidden gem.

F

eaturing 42 rooms; including 4 luxury suites, the AA rosette awarded Wildflower Restaurant and the Dartmoor Bar- The Moorland Garden Hotel has something for everyone. Given that the 9 acres of grounds are located on the edge of Dartmoor, it is no wonder that it is also a prime location for weddings all year round. The Moorland Garden Hotel has a rich history, dating back to the early 1930’s. Andrew Jenkins- General Manager; explains that Moorland was purpose built to be a hotel, unlike many at the time that were converted from manor houses and estates. “In the early 30’s the primary choices for a holiday would have been city or coastal, so the Moorland was there to offer something different”.

A popular venue for business conferences, wedding ceremonies or just a locally sourced Sunday Roast, the Moorland Garden Hotel certainly has a lot to offer

The great kitchen team, led by Head Chef Jake Westlake, provides locally sourced food where possible and prides itself on having attained the coveted rosette mark in 2017. Andrew tells us that the menu is broad, ranging from fine dining to a really good burger and chips! “Our Sunday Lunch is proving very popular and runs from 12pm-2pm every week”. Moorland Garden Hotel frequently plays host to special events, having just recently been the venue for a Spring Garden Fete by Miss Ivy Events. “It was a great day, and rather surprising actually as the weather was extremely good!” Andrew tells us “usually the immediate thought is to head to the coast when the sun is out - so we were admittedly worried about numbers. It ended up being a fantastic day with just over 700 people through the doors”. Andrew explains that Moorland Garden Hotel is also a great location for any birthday party, baby shower or social

Andrew Jenkins- General Manager

gathering. “Baby showers have certainly taken off in the last few years! It’s a marvellous idea I think. They are usually held in a private room with a gorgeous afternoon tea - but of course we can cater to whatever the guests prefer”. The lawn at the forefront of the hotel is certainly the perfect space for any Wedding, Summer party or special event. Cared for by Head Gardener Jonathan- it is clear that great pride is taken in the surroundings. The Rose Arbour stands tall, licensed for ceremonies on warmer days- and just behind is the picturesque wildflower meadow. Andrew has been at Moorland Garden Hotel for 3 years in total- and has seen the hotel go from strength to strength. “When I first came here, it was awfully quiet. We have worked hard to turn it around in the past few years, slowly refurbishing the interior and overall image, to get us to be this busy venue with a happy team that is at the core of everything we do. Social media is important to us, it’s key to let people know what you have to offer. We also notice that a lot of our customers come through word of mouth, which is always a good sign!”

Moorland Garden Hotel pride themselves on being a dog friendly hotel, whether you plan on staying overnight with your furry friend, or just want to pop in for a refreshment after a long stroll on the moors

“We are an extremely dog friendly hotel. We are on Dartmoor, people bring dogs!

A popular choice for business people, The Moorland Hotel is in a stunning rural location with easy access to the A38. Catering for groups of up to 170, Moorland offers 5 meeting rooms with free Wifi and free parking. “We have all the technology available to help your meeting or seminars run smoothly- and we are also on hand with a friendly service to provide refreshments and lunches”. Moving on to the bedrooms at Moorland, there are Garden Rooms and luxury and premier suites that offer a touch of traditional luxury to your stay and all rooms are kept beautifully clean by the dedicated housekeeping team. The sumptuous executive ‘Forget Me Not’ suite is tastefully decorated in a gentle pale blue and white décor. Sink into soft cushions and enjoy the views from your very own balcony. The suite features a four poster bed, a Tassimo coffee machine, and a modern en suite bathroom with separate shower and bath. Its spacious feel makes it a great choice for honeymooning or special occasions. Andrew explains that they can provide a number of additional extras to make your stay with them extra special. Whether you are on a couples retreat, a hen party or a family break from the hustle and bustle, these little touches really can make all the difference and can be arranged through the super helpful Reception team.

We have four dog friendly bedrooms, complete with quality lino flooring, a doggy bowl and dog bed. These rooms are all conveniently located on the ground floor, near any fire exits so you can pop out for that last evening stroll. We offer a special package for dog owners called ‘Paws for a Treat”.

From roses, to chocolates and a bottle of champagne- Moorland can also provide tickets to local attractions such as The Garden House, a gorgeous charity run Garden and Tea Rooms a short drive from the grounds.

The Moorland Garden Hotel is the perfect, romantic setting for your wedding, reception or vow renewal. “We have four licensed spaces for civil ceremonies and our outdoor Rose Arbour is also licensed for ceremonies. We can cater for between 2 and 160 guests and as a venue we welcome same-sex weddings”. The Crystal Room, which is The Moorland’s main location for indoor weddings- is like being transported back in time. The walls are adorned with huge, embellished golden mirrors and crystal chandeliers hang from the ceiling. Rich curtains hide a raised stage- and Andrew tells us this dates back from when they had a resident band performing. Overlooking the grounds and the Wildflower Meadow- it’s no wonder so many people choose to say ‘I do’ here. “We are taking bookings now for 2020 and 2021- and we’ve had some 2022 enquiries which is really exciting. We do have some availability for next summer, but it is booking up very quickly”. Andrew tells us that Laura and Karen are ready to listen to a couple’s requirements and help them to build the Wedding that is right for them, they have a great deal of experience with weddings and helping couples to navigate the sometimes choppy waters of planning a wedding. So, whether you pop in with your pooch for a warm drink after a stroll, plan on getting married here and everything in betweenThe Moorland Garden Hotel truly is a hidden gem that is worth discovering.

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF THE NATIONAL MARINE AQUARIUM The NMA welcomes around 300,000 visitors per year, including 30,000 school students who engage with their innovative schools programme. Our Editor, Libbi Chapple speaks to some of the team at The Aquarium to learn a little more about their history, what they stand for and the exciting events they have planned for their 20th birthday.

Olly Reed, Assistant Marketing Manager at The Aquarium says “There has actually been an aquarium in Plymouth since 1988. Initially housed at the British Marine Biological Association, a new much larger aquarium was built in the Barbican district in 1988 and was designated to be The National Marine Aquarium. Leading the way, the NMA was the first aquarium in the UK to be run as a separate charity solely dedicated to the education and conservation of the marine environment”. “The NMA welcomes around 300,000 visitors per year, including 30,000 school students who engage with our innovative schools’ programme. Their awe-inspiring exhibits featuring marine animals from near and far provide an environment that intrigues, inspires and motivates visitors to connect with our Oceans.” Said Josh McCarty, Head of Marketing at the NMA. What are your core values, what do you stand for?

More than an attraction, the NMA is a conservation and education charity.

Over the last 20 years, the NMA has been connecting people with our Oceans and successfully promoting pro-Ocean behaviour.

“We keep up to date with the most current conservation psychology research and we know that to effectively inspire behaviour change in an individual, ‘raising awareness’ or ‘sharing knowledge’ is not enough. Research shows that people are more likely to be pro-environmental if they have

30 July 2018

a connection to the environment, so our goal is to help people connect with the Oceans and adopt pro-Ocean behaviour.” Comments Helen Gowans, Public Engagement Coordinator at the NMA. What would you say has been the most notable event/s in the 20 years of the Aquarium being in operation? A notable development at the NMA in the past year has been the introduction of a national outreach programme for school children, alongside the arrival of our new virtual reality experience.

Give me a brief overview of the aquariums history- when and why was it established?

Our Discovery and Learning team encourages visitors to value and want to protect our Oceans by engaging and effective learning programmes for schools and the wider public.

Stu Higgs, NMA Schools Manager said, “In order to deliver these programmes we have developed four principles of learning; learning from fun, learning from experience, learning from science and learning from people. This approach has been really successful for us and

The School Outreach Officers will be travelling to schools in the South West, Newcastle and Cardiff to deliver an exciting programme offering unique opportunities to combine core ideas with cross-cutting concepts, art and creativity. “We use a fun, participatory and interactive approach which encourages children to make magnificent marine discoveries in the comfort of their own classroom. Our new top of the range VR equipment allows students to fully immerse themselves in a deep sea learning experience, diving to depths of 800 meters and use sonar equipment to track and observe the feeding behaviour of an Atlantic Sperm whale in pursuit of a Giant Squid – it’s really exciting!” said Stu Higgs, NMA Schools Manager. What programmes do you have in place for future generations to learn about the importance of what you do? The NMA aims to enhance the protection of marine life and biodiversity. We feel that this ultimate goal can be achieved by engaging our visitors with the amazing marine environment in a fun and experiential way.

allows us to effectively reach thousands of students each year. We also deliver learning activities for schools to educate young people from their foundation years to university students offering a unique programme with our award-winning learning space, JustAddH2O”. As a self funded charity, how can people support your work? What membership options do you have?

The NMA will also be launching a membership programme next month which will allow visitors to access exclusive benefits and experiences. What events do you have planned for your 20th Birthday? “To celebrate our 20th birthday year the National Marine Aquarium is holding more events than ever before. Not only are we hosting our usual family holiday themes, school activities and VIP Behind the Scenes tours, this year we are focusing on showcasing the work the charity does by involving and supporting the community as much as possible”. Comments Helen Gowans, Public Engagement Coordinator at the NMA. Events so far have included twenty birthday beach cleans, a NMA birthday boat trip, a special birthday Sleeping with Sharks Sleepover, a birthday Yoga at the Aquarium and a big family event that opened the Aquarium up for 250 lucky people to attend for completely free! Tell me a little more about your ‘Birthday Beach Cleans’? What better way to celebrate twenty years of Ocean conservation than with 20 beach cleans. The birthday beach cleans took place each weekend, they started back in March, and ran until the end of June”. Not only did they tidy up rubbish found on the coast line but anyone who joined them could get involved in exploring the local area and ask the team any questions about what they might have found.

Why are these cleans so importantwhat effects will the waste have on our marine life? Helen Gowans, Public Engagement Coordinator at the NMA said, “As seen in the news and in such programmes as Blue Planet 2, waste like plastic is currently a huge issue in our Oceans, but each of us can make a difference.”

Research suggests that there could be more plastic than fish in the Ocean by 2050 and because of this the NMA is doing its part to educate people about their options and create a vision of a world supporting health Oceans to sustain all life.

Josh McCarty, Head of Marketing at the NMA said, “From attending one of our beach cleans, supporting us by taking part in one of our evening ticket events, bringing your friends to the aquarium, volunteering or arranging a fundraiser on Facebook there are lots of great ways that people can support the Aquarium”.

Awareness has been growing substantially in recent years on the impact of waste on our Oceans. Has this had an effect on the support you receive at the NMA?

our schools outreach programme. The One Plymouth cup and drinks bottles designed to reduce single use waste are another great example of local organisations supporting our cause”. Do you cater for special events?

“In the UK we have seen a significant shift in people’s attitude towards the use of unsustainable single use plastics and other impacts on our Oceans. The Aquarium is working to reduce, reuse and recycle, and as part of the process, was the first attraction in the UK to operate a closed loop recycling system with partners Langage Farm.” Said Josh McCarty.

Josh McCarty said, “The Aquarium provides a unique setting with facilities for everything from yoga nights to scientific lectures, weddings, to special birthdays, silver service dinners to business breakfast and even boat trips”. The dedicated NMA Functions Team will work with you to ensure your event is as special as our venue”.

In 2017 the NMA again achieved the prestigious gold award from the Green Tourism Awards Scheme, qualifiers for this were reducing single use plastics, and operating an electric car for educational outreach courtesy of Vospers Motorhouse.

What about your future plans for the charity- (a little broad I know!)

Olly, Assistant Marketing Manager says “We have seen greater engagement in the community with our various community projects as well as with

Josh McCarty, Head of Marketing at the NMA said, “As an educational charity the team delivers formal curriculum-led learning to 30,000 children on site, and a further 10,000 through regional outreach. We have set ourselves a target of reaching 1 million school children and young families, within the next five years.”
