We hear it all the time, the correct mattress is the key to a good night’s sleep but most of us are willing to spend more on a holiday abroad for two weeks than a mattress we sleep on every single night of our lives. Purchasing a bed is one of the most important things we’ll ever do as it’s not just a bed, it’s an investment in your sleep.

B

ed specialists, The Perfect Sleep, are committed to ensuring every customer has the perfect nights sleep... On average we spend a third of our lives in bed, but do we fully consider how much the perfect sleep means to us? Mark Burrage, store manager at The Perfect Sleep talks to us about how the company has grown, what they have to offer and the most important things to consider when purchasing a new bed. The Perfect Sleep formerly known as “The Big Sleep Ltd” established in 1995 on Exeter St, Plymouth and have been providing the finest selection of beds, mattresses, and pillows ever since. Situated in the heart of Plymouth City Centre, The Perfect Sleep offer a vast selection from some of the biggest names in the bedding industry. The store has managed to collate one of the best ranges available for everyone to view and try out first hand. The Perfect Sleep was started by company director Clive Dare, whose passion for furniture as a hobby progressed to

become one of the most the successful bed specialists in Plymouth today, supplying an amazing service to customers across the Southwest.

“Customers can come in and get our expert advice and we genuinely care about each and every customer we meet. There is never any pressure to buy from us.”

Four main principles have led The Perfect Sleep to their success: expert advice, quality, value for money and above all friendly customer service. These standards have allowed them to continue to grow, improve and provide each customer with exceptional products.

Mark is the store manager at The Perfect Sleep, since joining the company as a sales consultant six years ago he has worked his way up now running the store alongside Brian and Emma his sales consultants. Mark and his team ensure every customer is looked after, taking pride in offering a selection of quality beds, they are there to listen to each customer’s needs and find the best-suited bed for them.

“I do genuinely care, that’s the thing for me” said Mark. “That’s what I found with Brian and Emma, they also care and that’s what has helped make the store what it is today.”

The company re-branded 3 years ago from The Big Sleep to The Perfect Sleep. The re-brand has allowed Mark and his colleagues to help people recognise that The Perfect Sleep are bed specialists rather than just a bed store.

The beauty of The Perfect Sleep is that there really is no pressure, the atmosphere is calm and relaxing allowing you to walk around without feeling anxious about making a purchase. The team offer informative knowledge and without doubt excellent value for money. Every detail is considered so that you make the right choice for your perfect sleep; from your health and well-being, posture support, spinal pressure relief, injury or if you just want pure luxury from your bed, there is something for everybody in the showroom. Your bed is not just an expense but an investment in a life-changing experience. One of the first things the team establish when a customer comes in to buy a mattress is whether they prefer soft, medium or firm: once this has been established they can then try out the various brands displayed in the showroom.

It’s not just as simple as choosing the firmness of the mattress. You need to consider your build and any injuries you may have that could have an impact on your sleep - after all, you want the perfect night’s sleep. “The Perfect Sleep display a huge variety of British brands such as Hypnos, Vispring, Harrison Spinks, Mammoth, Mlily, Highgrove Beds and Highgate Beds. Each brand has a unique selling point and a wide range of choice available.

Mark ensures that the relationship between The Perfect Sleep and their suppliers remains strong. One thing that puts The Perfect Sleep above other bed suppliers in the Southwest is that customer care is at the heart of everything they do. “If you’ve got a wooden bed frame with a one year guarantee. I don’t want them to think after that year, that’s it. They can come back to me in three or four years if they have a broken slat or they need a replacement side rail, we’re here for that. After care is something I’m very passionate about.

Mark will help every customer out in any way he can even if their guarantee has run out; stretching as far as going to their house to fix their bed for them if needs be or opening the store an hour early so that a customer can try out a bed. We all underestimate how important is it to take your time with a bed and that’s why Mark and his team will do everything they can to ensure you make the right decision and take your time, even if that means

going back to the showroom a few times to try out each mattress. When asked what his secret is to the perfect night’s sleep we were surprised at Mark’s response. He told us it’s not only investing in a suitable mattress that makes a big difference to how you sleep but the combination of both a good mattress and a good pillow. “You don’t want a pillow that is wider from your neck to the edge of your shoulder. If your head is raised during your sleep, it’s going to cause you a neck ache if your back is not aligned from your cervical to your sacrum. So you need to find a pillow that comes in level with your spine.”

The Perfect Sleep not only offer an extensive range of beds, mattresses, and pillows but also offer a range of bedroom furniture so that your bedroom can match. “As a bed specialist, our core of business is mattresses but if somebody wants a matching bedside table to their bed frame, we can do that as well.” It is clear that The Perfect Sleep have a passion for customer service and they have certainly done their research into how the body works to understand the best type of mattress for each person, whether you have a severe health condition or suffer from back pain.

The expansive knowledge Mark and his team have allows each customer to go away and have the perfect night’s sleep knowing their best interests have been considered throughout the entire journey. Mark prides himself on allowing every customer to take as much time as they

need, this is one of the key aspects that bring customers into The Perfect Sleep. Unlike other bed retailers where you feel pressured as soon as you open the door, Mark ensures customers know that someone is there to help without the pressure of purchasing there and then. The service is completely personalised and time is no worry. To find out more about the products on offer at The Perfect Sleep visit their showroom, head over to their website on www.the-perfect-sleep.com for their full range of products or call one of the team on 01752 268999.

Information Technology isn’t everybody’s forte and, with technology changing every day, it can be overwhelming. MazingTree can take that stress away with their extensive expertise and dedication to customer care. We spent the afternoon with John Allan and his team finding out about what MazingTree do and how John has turned his love for engineering into the successful IT Company it is today.

J

ohn originally started his career as an electronics engineer after studying his degree in Communications Engineering at Leeds Polytechnic. In 1989, John’s parents moved away from The Lakes, to Guernsey leaving him with no close family in the North of England, so he decided it was time to relocate. Looking at the map for a large city that would allow him to explore a career in electronics, and a place that allowed him to follow his passion for the outdoors, John, whose hobbies include everything outdoors, decided that Plymouth was the city for him. “Plymouth has every outdoor activity, climbing, canoeing, surfing and sailing, you have it all right on your doorstep.” A year after moving to Plymouth, while he was working as an electronics design

engineer, John met Penny, who is now his wife and the co-director of MazingTree. When the company he was working for closed John was given the opportunity to work for HMS Raleigh as a civil servant, this position allowed him to retrain in IT. He quickly progressed through the MOD’s IT department and stepped into a management position which saw him looking after a network of over 400 computers, spread around 67 buildings. After a successful few years, John decided it was time to progress in his career and made the move to start work for the Regional Development Agency.

“I spent quite a lot of time supporting people using VPNs and with remote access, to allow them to work remotely; I got this kind of idea that I really quite

John Allan liked, supporting people at home, running small businesses.” In 2006 with two small children and modest redundancy package the decision to start his own IT Company was made, and despite having just three months wages in the bank, “I just decided that I could do something on my own,” John tells OM. The unique name “MazingTree” was due to my daughter Jane, explains John. When Jane was very young, Penny used to go out into the garden and say “amazing”, when referring to the amount of cooking apples on the tree. A little while later, Jane proudly showed a friend of ours round the garden, and pointed proudly to the Apples on the tree saying, “Those are Mazing’s, those are.” Since then the house has been called MazingTree.

The team at MazingTree has grown over the years, starting with John managing the IT side and Penny helping with recruitment and moral support, it now has an additional two fulltime engineers and a part-time accounts administrator. Alex has been with the company for the past five years and is now the senior engineer, Liam has just started as a full-time engineer with the team; both the engineers studied at Plymouth University and came to the company as students on placement. Gayle joined the team in 2018 as the account’s administrator and has just given birth to her new son, Myles, she is

currently on maternity leave but made sure to pop in and say hi to the OM team. Currently, John is looking to pass on his knowledge and is now interviewing for a new apprentice to join the MazingTree family. MazingTree primarily provides computer and network related IT support, the team prides themselves on looking after people and making sure that employees can get on with their work so those businesses can run smoothly. “We take away all the hassle from companies whose computer related needs have grown beyond what they can support themselves.” The company offers a wide range of IT services, from simple computer repairs to server deployments, Wi-Fi networks, and Cloud services, plus supply of all hardware and software. The company are an Ofcom registered ISP and can offer specialist fibre broadband and phone line services for your business and home.

With technology ever-changing, every day you discover something new so it’s important to work with a team that you can bounce off and learn from, says John. I have a happy team, everyone knows what everyone is doing and we all support each other.

Meet the team - Alex, John, Liam and Gayle The MazingTree team mainly cater to businesses but do offer their services to the private homes of the companies they work with, or those that have business related requirements. John’s ethos of making sure that the customer is always listened to and supported, combined with his passion to deliver a five-star service has earned him excellent reviews with all his customers. One of the main reasons behind the company’s high reputation is that they talk everything through and are never condescending. No matter how small the problem or the business, the team will always ensure that they listen and the client receives the best care and advice. As well as offering the people of Plymouth his IT knowledge, John has turned his skills to creating a wireless electronic handset for recording high board diving scores, called a Judge Pad or JPAD. Johns daughters Lucy and Jane were both keen divers with Plymouth Diving at the time, and having spotted a problem with the way diving scores were being produced, John decided to create a solution. The wireless electronic pads allow the judges to enter their scores which are then fed back to a computer, which totals all the scores and then displays them on a computer screen, scoreboard and live onto the internet.

“So the judges see all of the scores that the other judges have as well, so they get some feedback about

whether they’re judging high or low.” JPADS are now used extensively throughout the UK and British Diving, as well as many other Diving organisations across the world as far away as New Zealand and Australia. John’s long term vision for the company was to be able to maintain a good worklife balance and enjoy family life in the outdoors, with a few well deserved holidays. The company has now reached a point where John can leave the reigns to his trusted team. The long term goal for MazingTree is to be the best IT support company in Plymouth through their ability to support different customers from micro businesses to larger companies or schools. It is incredible to see how taking a leap of faith, hard work and a true vision have helped John grow his company to support a huge range of businesses across Plymouth and the South West. The strong bond between his team, their expertise and number one focus always being the customer, will with no doubt enable MazingTree to develop even further to the best IT company in Plymouth.

To find out more about MazingTree and the services they provide don’t hesitate to get in touch with John using the details below.

DOG FRIENDLY walks in plymouth We all hate leaving our furry friends behind whilst we head out to have fun; why not plan your next adventure with your best friend? Whatever the adventure you’re looking for we’ve got you covered!

S

ummer is the best time of year with long summer nights, the smell of freshly cut grass, beach days and, of course, the radiant sunshine with your beloved furry friend. The OM team have found the best places in Plymouth for you and your pooch to have fun-packed adventures this summer. Plymouth is filled with huge open spaces perfect to run and sniff around in. As a city, we love man’s best friend, with lots of dog-friendly pubs, cafes and restaurants, accommodation, and plenty of beaches to explore. Before you head out on a fun-packed day it’s best to fuel up, so why not enjoy a hearty and healthy breakfast. Boston Tea Party or Hangry are the perfect places for a delicious start to your day, both venues will smother your furry friend in doggy kisses and treats. If you need a coffee to start your day Good Coffee Headquarters and Ground Coffee both welcome your four-legged friend with open paws.

Due to certain restrictions that some beaches put in place from May to October, taking your dog to the beach can be tricky in the summer. Fortunately for your furry friend, there are beaches in and around Devon that will welcome you and your pooch all year

round. Beesands, Slapton Sands and Torcross, Thurlestone, Whitsand Bay and Kingsand impose no restrictions during the summer months and both Bantham and Bigury beaches have dog-friendly areas meaning you can enjoy adventures on the beach this summer!

Walking is a great way to get out with the family and friends this summer, made even better with your dog tagging along for the fun too! With the stunning scenery we are blessed with in Plymouth, why not take a day out and explore some of the best walking trails in the South West.

2.9 miles long, with lots for the kids to do and a mini beach halfway this is a great way to get out with the family this summer. One of the most popular places to walk your dog is Plymbridge woods. The woods are used for walking, cycling, dog walking and viewing the natural flora and fauna. The woods are full of the perfect places for you and your best friend to have lots of fun-packed adventures. You can enjoy a long lazy walk through the trail while your dog jumps in and out of the river and keeps cool on these hotter months.

Why not take your dog to Cann Woods this summer? Sat in the valley of the stunning River Plym, Cann Woods is set over near 570 acres of striking scenery. It is perfect for a long walk as the trail goes for miles and the views are dramatic. You can walk, cycle or picnic whilst taking in the views and wildlife of this beautiful valley.

At the end of your adventure-filled day why not head to one of Plymouth’s many dog-friendly restaurants or bars to enjoy your favourite tipple and some wellearned food. The Seco lounge, The Pub on the Hoe, and The Rose and Crown are some the team’s favourites. If you want to treat your furry friend to dinner then the Fishermans Arms will cater to your best friend with a special menu just for them.

An easy walk for you and your dog this summer is the Boundary Walk, located at Saltram. If you’re after a short walk this route is about a mile long and perfect for those hot days when you don’t want your dog getting too hot. If you fancy a longer route the Saltram long trail is around

It’s the best time of year to get out with your furry friend and even better now that you no longer have to feel guilty about leaving your dog at home whilst you go out and have fun!

Our Favourite

Seasonal

Recipe ideas Organic September is upon us and it’s time to get smarter with how you cook. Eat organic meals this September with our favourite recipe ideas and seasonal ingredients that’ll leave your taste buds yearning for more deliciousness!

Farmhouse blackberry and apple pie 2 tbsp plain flour (plus extra for dusting), 750g/1lb 10oz sweet dessert pastry, 1kg Bramley apples peeled, cored, halved and sliced, 400g blackberries, 140g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling, pinch ground cinnamon, 1 egg beaten with 2 tbsp milk One Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. On a floured surface, roll out two-thirds of the pastry and use it to line a 23cm loosebottom fluted tart tin, leaving a slight overhang and keeping any pastry scraps. Chill the tart for 10 mins. Prick the base lightly with a fork, then fill with baking paper and baking beans. Place in the oven on a baking sheet for 20 mins, remove the beans and paper, then bake for 10 mins more until sandy brown and biscuity. Remove from the oven. Two Tip the apples into a large bowl and microwave on High for 3 mins. Toss in the berries, sugar, cinnamon and 2 tbsp flour with a pinch of salt and pile it into the case, saving 14 berries for later. Three Roll the remaining pastry and trimmings together into a square roughly 30 x 30cm. Cut out 8 strips of pastry about 3 x 30cm – if you cut round an average ruler the size will be perfect. Weave the strips of pastry evenly over the fruit to create a lattice pattern and push them into the edge of the tart. Trim the overhang of pastry, brush the lattice heavily with the egg, then scatter generously with more sugar. Plonk the remaining berries into the gaps, then bake for 1 hr until brown and bubbling. Leave the pie to cool for 30 mins until no longer scorching. Scatter with more sugar, slice and serve.

Halloumi pasta For the pasta: 250g/9oz cherry tomatoes, on the vine, 1 tbsp olive oil, 1 red onion, peeled, finely chopped, 2 garlic cloves, peeled, finely chopped, 1 red chilli, finely chopped, 250g/9oz halloumi cheese, cut into 1cm/½in cubes, 400g/14oz canned cherry tomatoes, 1 tbsp chopped fresh oregano leaves, salt and freshly ground black pepper, 400g/14oz fresh penne, cooked according to packet instructions For the salad: 1 tsp Dijon mustard, 1 tbsp white wine vinegar, 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, salt and freshly ground black pepper, 75g/3oz rocket leaves, 1 head Little Gem lettuce, cut in half lengthways, leaves separated, washed, 75g/3oz lamb’s lettuce, 3 tbsp freshly grated parmesan (or alternative vegetarian hard cheese) One For the pasta, heat a frying pan until hot over a medium heat, add the fresh cherry tomatoes and fry for 4-5 minutes, or until just softened. Remove from the pan and set aside. Add the olive oil, red onion, garlic and chilli to the pan the tomatoes were cooked in and fry for 2-3 minutes. Two Add the halloumi cheese and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until pale golden-brown on both sides. Add the canned cherry tomatoes and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 2-3 minutes. Add the fresh cherry tomatoes and oregano and cook for a further minute. Season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper.Add the cooked pasta to the pan and mix gently until well combined. Three For the salad, whisk the mustard and vinegar together in a bowl, then whisk in the olive oil. Season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Place all the salad leaves into a bowl and pour over the dressing. Stir until well combined. To serve, sprinkle over the grated parmesan and spoon the dressed salad alongside.

Tzatziki 350g/12oz Greek-style yoghurt, 1 cucumber, 2 tbsp lemon juice, 2 garlic cloves, grated finely, dash of extra virgin olive oil, paprika, for sprinkling The best result is achieved by peeling and de-seeding the cucumber before grating. Hang the grated cucumber in muslin cloth or a tea towel in order to squeeze out all the excess liquid, if you like.Combine the yoghurt, cucumber, lemon juice and garlic. Add a dash of olive oil and sprinkle with paprika.

Leafy salad with feta and pomegranate 200g/7oz feta, splash lemon juice, 1-2 garlic cloves, crushed, 100g/3½oz flaked almonds, toasted, 120g bag mixed rocket, spinach and watercress, 3 tbsp olive oil, salt and freshly ground black pepper, 2 pomegranates, seeds only ONE Put the feta in a shallow dish, squeeze over the lemon juice and scatter over the garlic. Leave to marinate while you prepare the rest of the salad. TWO Toast the almonds under a medium grill until lightly browned, then leave to cool. Cut the pomegranate in half and pop the seeds out into a bowl by bashing the skin with a spoon. Three Toss together the rocket, spinach and watercress in a large salad bowl with the olive oil, and salt and freshly ground pepper. Crumble in the marinated feta, and scatter the pomegranate seeds and toasted almonds over. Serve immediately.

Spiced pavlova with plums and cherries For the pavlova: 5 free-range egg whites, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 250g/9oz caster sugar, 1 tsp white wine vinegar For the cherries: 100g/3½oz dried cherries, 100ml/3½fl oz kirsch

Butternut squash soup 1 butternut squash, 2 tbsp olive oil, 1 onion, chopped butter, to taste, 600ml/20fl oz vegetable stock, plus additional stock to loosen soup if desired, 1 heaped tsp hot smoked paprika. salt and freshly ground black pepper For the crisps: reserved butternut squash peelings, drizzle olive oil, few drops sherry vinegar, 2 tbsp finely chopped rosemary ONE Peel the butternut squash and reserve the long strips of skin. Discard the butternut squash pulp and chop the remaining butternut squash into chunks. Heat the olive oil in a large casserole, add the onion and butternut squash and plenty of butter (to taste) and cook untill brown and caramelised. Two Pour over the stock. Simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from the heat, leave to cool slightly and then blend using a food processor or hand-blender to the desired consistency. Add hot smoked paprika and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Three Place the reserved butternut peelings in a roasting tray and top with the olive oil, sherry vinegar, chopped rosemary and put in the oven to cook for 20 minutes on a low heat to crisp up. Remove the crisps from the oven and place on kitchen paper to absorb any excess oil. Serve the soup with the skin crisps.

For the spiced plums: 200ml/7fl oz red wine, 1 orange, juice only, 75g/2¾oz light brown sugar, 1 cinnamon stick, few cardamom pods, lightly crushed, few allspice berries, lightly crushed, 1 piece pared orange zest, 8 ripe plums, stoned and quartered To assemble: 300ml/10fl oz double or whipping cream, whipped, 1 tbsp icing sugar, ½ tsp cinnamon (optional) ONE To make the meringue, preheat the oven to 150C/130C Fan/Gas 2. Draw a circle of around 23cm/9in in diameter on a sheet of baking parchment and then use the sheet to line a baking tray. Beat the egg whites in a stand mixer or with a hand-held electric whisk, until soft peaks form when the whisk is removed from the bowl. two Mix the cinnamon with the sugar, then start adding this gradually to the eggs, a tablespoon at a time to start with and then slightly more, beating between each addition, until the meringue is stiff and glossy. Sprinkle over the vinegar and fold in. Use a few blobs of the meringue to secure the baking parchment to the baking tray, then pile the rest into the marked circle. Make a slight indentation in the middle and allow the meringue to come to peaks around the side. Three Bake in the oven for around an hour and 15 minutes, to an hour and a half. The meringue should be crisp round the sides but with some give in the middle. Turn off the oven and leave the meringue to cool completely. To make the filling, put the dried cherries in a small saucepan with the kirsch. Bring to the boil, then turn down and simmer until the cherries are soft and plump and most of the kirsch has been absorbed. FOUR To make the spiced plums, heat the wine, orange juice, sugar, spices and orange zest into a saucepan. Stir on the low heat until the sugar has dissolved, then bring to the boil and simmer for a few minutes until the mixture is syrupy. Add the plums and poach in the liquid for a few minutes, or until soft but still holding their shape. Remove the plums from the liquid, peeling off the skins as you go – they should just fall off. Strain the cooking liquid. To assemble, add the icing sugar and cinnamon (if using) to the whipped cream, then stir a couple of tablespoons of the plum liquid with the cherries. Put the cream over the meringue base, top with the plums and drizzle over any remaining liquid.

PENSION AWARENESS DAY 2019 How much do you really know about pensions and are you really prepared for retirement? We’ve done some research to help educate you for Pension Awareness Day!

R

etiring is something that most adults in the UK look forward to, for good reason, you’ve spent the majority of your life working hard to save up the funds to be comfortable in later life with no stress or worry about money. It is never too early to be thinking about your pension and to educate yourself on the best ways to save and prepare for retirement.

September 15th, 2019 is Pension Awareness Day and the aim is to promote the importance of pensions and saving for the future and alert the nation that we’re not saving enough for retirement. There is no better day to educate yourself on ways to save and prepare for when the time comes to retire.

Most of us would agree that pensions might not be the most entertaining topic to talk about, so Pension Awareness Day aims to encourage the use of more simple language to make it easier. Everyone has a different idea of how they plan to spend their retirement, some may

want to settle down in the countryside while others might consider moving abroad to travel with their pension fund. Whatever it is you decide is the right direction for you in later life, it is essential to ensure that you are covered financially for any situation.

Statistics from 2018 suggest that around 35% of the adult population in the UK don’t have a pension or are unaware that they have one this is approximately 18.4 million brits. These statistics suggest that drastic action needs to be taken to educate UK adults on pensions. People living longer, coupled with the uncertainty over the changes to the state pension age, means it is clear there is still a long way to go in equipping people with the tools and information they need to help them save more for retirement. In November 2018, the State Pension age was 65 for men and women. However, this is gradually increasing and now

DID YOU KNOW... 43% of the population admit they don’t know how much they will need to retire

depends on when you were born. It has been suggested that state pension age will continue to increase and will reach 67 or even higher by 2028 according to Age UK. You can now expect to work up to seven years longer before you can receive your full state pension.

Unfortunately, the state pension is unlikely to be enough to provide the income you need to maintain a comfortable standard of living once you’ve stopped working. So it’s a good idea to build up your own retirement savings pot throughout your working life. New government laws require employers to offer a pension scheme that’s subject to minimum regulatory and governance requirements. This is known as automatic enrolment. They must also contribute a set proportion of your wage to your pension pot. You will be automatically enrolled into a pension scheme if:

- you’re aged over 22 - you’re under State Pension age - you earn more than £10,000 a year - you’re not already in a workplace pension scheme - you work in the UK

From 6 April, the minimum your employer has to contribute increased to 3% of your salary, up from 2% previously. At the same time, the minimum total autoenrolment contribution rose to 8%, which is the total you and your employer together must put in. What exactly is “enough”? Have you thought about how much you will need in retirement? You will need to consider your monthly bills and expenses, and whether you will be paying rent or a mortgage or living in a home you own outright. Factor in your state pension and any other income you may have, and you can see the size of the gap your pension needs to fill.

It has also been found that around 55% of adults believe approximately £100,000 is enough to retire comfortably. However, this is far below the recommended amount by Royal London for a comfortable retirement which stands at around £260,000–£445,000, depending on accommodation costs. Pension awareness day aims to bridge the gap in knowledge of pensions and prepare everyone, regardless of age, for retirement. You don’t have to take out a pension but if you still want to maintain a comfortable lifestyle when you stop working you’ll need to save some of your own money. A pension is a long-term investment that has generous tax benefits and simply

aims to provide you with an income for later life or when you retire. When you do decide to stop work, you’ll no longer have your salary and will still have bills to pay - this is why having a pension is extremely important. If you retire and don’t have enough income to cover living costs (i.e. rent/mortgage, food, bills, etc) it could leave you in a difficult situation that will be hard to get out of. Living longer into retirement, due to increased life expectancy, presents us with an important question - will we have enough money to enjoy the lifestyle we desire and to last us, once we have stopped work?

Adults in the UK are saving less on average for their pension than they should, this is a problem because we are living longer than expected and therefore will have less money available to live off when you retire. Focusing on retirement now is the way forward, you can never plan too far in advance when it comes to your pension and financial situation.

Here are some tips on saving for retirement and things to be aware of with your pension and ways to be prepared for your financial future. 1. Start by putting in is as much as possible, as early as possible. 2. Don’t delay. If you delay saving into a pension, you’ll then need to contribute a higher percentage of your pay to achieve a comfortable retirement. The sooner you contribute, the longer your money has to grow. The compounding effect of investment returns can make a massive difference over the long term.

3. Track your progress. Running a retirement calculation at least once per year is advisable to see if you are on track to meet your goals. Keep in mind that your plan is dynamic, not static. Review your progress at least once a year. Also think about the impact that life events such as a marriage or divorce, promotion or redundancy, birth of a child and funding education will have on your plan. If necessary, make changes to your plan as your situation changes and keep open the lines of communication with your spouse, partner, friends, and family. 4. Get an estimate of your state pension and get in touch with all your pension providers and let them know you’re planning for retirement - they’ll usually send you important information about your pension. 5. Don’t panic! You still have time! Sit down with a cup of tea or coffee and start to work out how much you’ll need for retirement and go from there. If you need any advice about pension planning there are numerous resources available to you -

SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY 2019 The 10th September marks World Suicide Prevention Day - Alan Chatting from Plymouth Psychotherapy discusses what we can all do to help recognise the signs of suicide

S

uicide is a terrible waste of human potential. It is a tragedy that a person cannot see his or her own worth as a person. It is heart-breaking that someone is unable to see their value to humanity.

Every day, in Britain, a man takes his own life every two hours. For women, it’s every six hours. And although these numbers are going down slightly, they are still far too high. In every war since Vietnam, the death toll from suicide has exceeded the death toll from violence in the conflict. Throughout the world today, In spite of the dreadful conflicts which we see on the news every night, men under 50 are more likely to die from suicide than from violent action or warfare.

In University counselling services across the UK, 2/3 of the clients are women. And yet we have seen that men are in most danger of suicide. Trying to find an identity is very tough in the 21st-century. Women are leaving behind a subservient, “less than”, place in society and are moving on to something more.

However, it still might be a struggle to work out who they are going to be, once the old models of mother and housewife are put to one side. On the other hand, men find themselves with an old-fashioned view of a tough guy who is in charge, which is completely out of date in modern society. Here at Psychotherapy Plymouth, we are used to seeing despair, and listening to people who struggle to see their own value and don’t want to experience another day. In spite of this, they find the courage to go on and to make a better life for themselves.

It seems as if, once people have made the decision to talk to someone, they will find a way to go on and even to build a life that they can enjoy. The challenge is to start talking. Veterans groups are a real help in this area. It enables men who have absorbed a traditional “man up and be a man” philosophy to talk to people like themselves. Men like this are not very likely to see a counsellor or psychotherapist.

Counsellors and psychotherapists are trained to listen quietly and intently, without breaking in with their own views or issues. Therapy is a safe space to talk, however hard that might be for you. Free of the constant bombardment of digital information, the space to just talk is calming and healing. It enables you to gain a real sense of what is going on for you when you can speak it out clearly and with help from an expert to unravel your thought processes.

At the Waterloo well-being centre, we welcome anyone who is ready to talk about him or herself and who feels that they need help to do so. Good talking takes good listening. If you are in trouble and you need to talk, talk to someone, even if you can’t see the way out. Call the Samaritans, talk to that one best friend, or ask to talk to a therapist.

Many people, especially young people under 30, seem to communicate endlessly, facilitated by their everpresent phones. However, face-to-face communication with a physical human being is what we have evolved to need.

If you feel someone you know is in despair then give him or her the space to talk. Don’t try to fix anything, just listen with all your heart and soul. This is what does the trick. If you want to get better at this, then look for a therapeutic listening course, for example with Lotus Training. Any good therapist will tell you, that when all else fails just shut up and listen. Good listening helps everyone to feel better about themselves, and can sometimes save a life.

Digital communication has been around for less than human lifetime, whereas we have evolved as people with other people around us, in small connected groups, over hundreds of thousands of years.

Alan Chatting is a Psychotherapist, Coach and the author of Evolution and You, available on Amazon. He manages Psychotherapy Plymouth at the Waterloo Wellbeing Centre.

Happiness is just one of the many emotions we experience that can help to keep us feeling okay, however, with modernday living causing our stress levels to be higher than our levels of happiness, what can we do if those stress and anxiety levels increase beyond a healthy equilibrium? While in the past there was often a clear boundary between where work life ended, and home life began… This is now very much a grey area.

A

Plymouth counselling practice, run by Nigel Summerton, is celebrating its twenty-fifth year of helping others find a balance between the modern stresses of personal and work life living, along with emotional stability. This month OM Magazine talks to Nigel and his colleague Jo Maguire, about how the practice has changed over 25 years in business. Plymouth counselling practice, Personal and Relationship Counselling, (PRC), is a private practice of Counsellors and Psychotherapists established in 1994. Over the past 25 years, the team has provided an invaluable confidential counselling and psychotherapy service for the people of Devon & Cornwall. In 1994 Gwen Cawse and John Washbrook opened the practice, and at this time, it was run entirely from the top floor of a building based in Looe St on the Barbican. In 2000, Gwen and John decided to expand the practice and advertised for a new relationship counsellor. Not long out of training, Nigel Summerton applied for the advertised role and came on board to become the third member of the team. Nigel began his training as a relationship counsellor in 1996, and later trained as a general counsellor to broaden his knowledge when working with individuals.

Jo Maguire 36 September 2019

Nigel stepped into the role of running PRC after Gwen and John decided to retire. Taking over a practice with a wellestablished reputation has allowed Nigel to develop and grow the business, there is now a team of eight counsellors and the practice has expanded from just the top floor to currently fill all three floors in the building. With a substantial client base and many of their clients recommending them to others, there is no other local independent counselling organisation that has seen as many clients as PRC.

In 1980 when he was in his early 20’s, a motorbike accident resulted in the amputation of his left arm, below the elbow, this resulted in the end of his career in the Royal Navy. “At the time I got quite depressed”, Nigel explains, “We didn’t think much about counselling back in the 80s, it wasn’t something on the radar.” A second motorcycle accident in 1994, left Nigel wheelchair-bound for a year and it was after this accident that he decided to train as a counsellor. Nigel recalls “After my second accident, I found that talking to a counsellor helped immensely with the emotional healing required to carry on and live a fulfilling life, I

Tracy Ede Call OM Plymouth Magazine 01752 691007

Nigel Summerton realised the benefits of talking to somebody about my feelings in order to move on”. Now working with clients who are going through difficult times, his personal experience helps him to empathise with them. “I think that’s the great thing about all of the counsellors here at PRC, we’ve all had a lot of life experience, both from our own experiences and through working with people”. One of the practitioners at PRC Jo Maguire, originally trained as an addiction counsellor with the NHS and then later went on to qualify as a CBT Therapist. Jo works with a wide range of people struggling with real-life issues. Fourteen years ago, love saw her relocate to Plymouth. She has been working at PRC for the last 10 years as a full-time relationship and CBT Therapist.

The other six members of the well-respected PRC team include a mix of both female and male counsellors, all of whom bring a different professional package to the practice. The most experienced psychotherapist Les Parsons, who has been at the practice for almost 12 years. He originally trained as a psychiatric nurse and worked within community mental health projects for many years before concentrating on his own psychotherapy practice, using Transactional Analysis as a key approach to his work. Tracy Ede, has over 20 years’ experience working with emotional and traumabased distress. Her early career began in residential and outreach settings. Tracy is a well-established counsellor within a therapy team, supporting young people and their families in special needs educational

settings in Plymouth. She uses an integrative, holistic approach with the belief that there is ‘no one size fits all’ therapy. Naheed Holmes, who has previously worked with addictions and eating disorders, works with an integrative approach. This offers the opportunity to work collaboratively with clients in a way that supports their individual needs, with a broad range of issues that also include depression, anxiety, trauma, identity, and loss. Jane Doggart, is a highly experienced general Counsellor of 25 years and a specialist Addictions Therapist. Jane’s uses a person-centered approach and Transactional Analysis and sees her role as a therapist to educate and facilitate change. Steve Worsley, an ex-Royal Marine brings a wealth of life experience to his therapy. As well as a military background, Steve has worked extensively with offenders and has a background in sports therapy. The youngest and most recently qualified member of the team, Marcia Morton, brings her own dynamic energy to the practice, working with a humanistic approach, believing that we all have our own answers from within.

All the counsellors have a wealth of experience and meet often to consider best practice, and ensure that they are working within the BACP (the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) Ethical Framework. Each counsellor must demonstrate ongoing professional development. Nigel explains, “We all undergo supervision for an hour and a half every month to help deal with our workloads, this supervision makes sure that we are all working ethically as well as helping us all stay self-aware, safeguarding both ourselves and our clients”. To ensure the practice continues to evolve and offer the best service available, the practitioners at PRC meet twice a month to catch up with each other, and brainstorm ideas on how they can help clients get past whatever issues they are facing. These meetings also help the counsellors look after one another, and talk about the difficulties they face. “It is quite distressing

to hear the situations that some people have been through in their lives, and we often need to support one another here.”

The close family type network of the team ensures a practice that really does make you feel safe and secure. It’s become undeniable, that there is an increase in people struggling with mental health. Our world today is less humanfriendly than it used to be, emotions seem to have taken a back seat, and people are underestimating how important they are and where they fit. With the increased usage of social media having a huge impact on mental health, it is clear that there is a lack of compassion and understanding of how we humans’ function and communicate. “We live in a world where the expectation is that we should strive for happiness all of the time. Although at PRC we are great fans of happiness, it’s just not realistic to have continuous happiness. Life can be very tough and we will all at times feel sad, angry, worried, lonely or ashamed - these feelings are part of being human.”

“The aim of counselling, is to help people recognise and voice these feelings without fear of being ridiculed or judged. Accepting and sharing painful feelings is one of the most important steps on the road to recovery.” The practice provides counselling for couples, individuals & young people facing many types of problems such as; stress and anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and confidence, eating disorders, (CBT) cognitive behavioural therapy, marital and relationship issues,

Marcia Morton bereavement and loss, and difficulties with intimacy and sexual problems. The practitioners at PRC have each been selected for their experience, qualifications, and personalities - their combined knowledge means they can offer a wide range of different expertise and specialties. “It takes many years to build a good reputation and to become established as a counsellor; there aren’t many practices that have been around for as long as us, and what you can get from knowing we’ve been established 25 years, is that you don’t achieve this unless you are providing a good quality service. So, you’ll know that if you come to us, there’s an established team who have built an excellent reputation who will listen and take care of you.” If you feel that you need to talk to someone from PRC about yourself or on behalf of somebody else, then do not hesitate to get in touch via phone, email or the website (details listed below).
