REMEMBRANCE DAY Written by Ash Saunders, Edited by Abby Cooper

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.

O

n the 11th of November 1918, at the 11th hour, The Great War came to an end. This day then became known as Armistice Day. Each year across the nation, Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day is commemorated with a 2-minute silence at 11 o’clock on the 11th of November and Remembrance Sunday, the second Sunday of November. Remembrance Day honours the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces community, the British and Commonwealth veterans, the Allies that fought alongside us and the civilian servicemen and women involved in the two World Wars and later conflicts. Every year the nation unites to make sure that no-one is forgotten and to remember and honour those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom. The symbol of Remembrance across the world is the poppy which stemmed from the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ written by Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. The poppy is a well-known and well-established symbol, one that carries a wealth of history and meaning with it. Wearing a poppy is still a very personal choice, reflecting individual experiences and personal memories. It is never compulsory but is greatly appreciated by those who it is intended to support. When World War 1 ended, it was considered to be “the war to end all wars”, but 21 years later when World War 2 broke out in Europe it became a reality that this was not the case. Since the end of World War 2 in 1945, Great Britain has been involved in many conflicts and Remembrance Day give us the chance to remember friends and family we may have lost in conflict, the price of war and a

chance to honour and respect those who are no longer with us.

churches including St Andrew’s Parish Church and 26 schools.

Remembrance Day is extremely important in Plymouth as the city has a strong military connection. Most residents of the city are related to or know someone who currently serves or has served in the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Marines and RAF. Armistice Day allows the people of Plymouth to celebrate those currently serving in conflict across the world as well as remembering those who sadly lost their lives fighting for our country.

There are several memorial plaques, statues and monuments in Plymouth, each showing the importance the city puts on remembering and honouring those involved in conflict.

Anyone who was born and raised in Plymouth has heard the stories of the damage done to the city during the heavy bombings during the Second World War. HMNB Devonport was the main target for bombings and attacks during the conflict; however other areas of Plymouth were severely affected by the devastation. Charles Church located on the roundabout next to Drake Circus stands as a reminder of the devastation brought to the city during this time. The church was bombed in the Plymouth Blitz in 1941 along with 40 other

On the Hoe, under the Belvedere Wedding Cake, memorial plaques lie as a reminder of the conflict brought to Plymouth during World War 2. The plaques that lie at The Belvedere Garden of Remembrance commemorate conflicts from the Second World War through to the Falklands War.

On Sunday 10th November at 11 am, Plymouth and the rest of the nation will be holding the annual two-minute silence to commemorate the end of World War 1 and other conflicts Great Britain have been involved in. Continue to page 12...

The Remembrance Day service will take place on Plymouth Hoe, surrounded by the memorial monuments that stand proudly as a reminder of the horrible conflicts our country has been involved in. With its central position on the Hoe overlooking Plymouth Sound, the Plymouth Naval Memorial is a wellknown local landmark that was unveiled by Prince George in 1924. The iconic memorial stands as the feature of Remembrance Day commemorations in Plymouth. The memorial commemorates more than 7,200 naval personnel of the First World War and nearly 16,000 of the Second World War who were lost or buried at sea.

Plymouth Hoe Promenade is specifically dedicated to military parades, displays and commemorations held annually in Plymouth such as Remembrance Sunday. The Plymouth Merchant Navy Monument was unveiled in September by Anne, Princess Royal, honouring the Merchant Navy contributions during World War 1 and World War 2. The Merchant Navy played a huge role as Britain depended on civilian cargo ships to import food and raw materials, as well as to transport

soldiers overseas, and keep them supplied. The title ‘Merchant Navy’ was granted by King George V after the First World War to recognise the contribution made by merchant sailors. This monument lies as a reminder that it wasn’t just soldiers that put their lives on the line and died during conflict and that many civilians fought for their country too. The Remembrance Day service acts as a time for everyone to remember the soldiers, nurses and many civilians that fought and lost their lives during past and present conflict and pay respect to them by honouring the 2-minute silence and wearing a poppy. The Lord Mayor will also lay wreaths on behalf of current serving servicemen and women and veterans for their fallen comrades.

Remembrance Day is a reminder for us all to be grateful for our Military personnel and civilians who have bravely put their lives on the line to fight for our freedom. To find out more about the history of Remembrance Day and how you can get involved visit your local Royal British Legion branch or head to www.britishlegion.org.uk.

Special thanks go to KB Security and Drake’s Island for Sponsoring this article as proud military veterans.

Plymouth is full of exciting and entertaining leisure outlets for all the family to enjoy, but adventure golf has yet to be one of them until now. On Thursday 24th October, Paradise Island Adventure Golf opened its doors to the public in Plymouth’s brand new leisure and entertainment destination - Drake Circus, The Barcode. This new leisure outlet is providing a new host of entertainment facilities and eateries to the city for the people of Plymouth to get stuck into and enjoy some quality time with family and friends. Swing into a world of adventure this November with Paradise Island Adventure Golf, bringing you an adventure like no other right on your doorstep.

E

xperience a tropical paradise filled with fun for all of the family with Plymouth’s brand new adventure golf facility - Paradise Island Adventure Golf, the UK’s leading indoor adventure golf facility. You’ll find two 18 hole indoor adventure golf courses spanning across 16,000 sq/ft of tropical utopia where you and your family can explore the deadly jungle together! OM had to the chance to catch up with the Marketing Manager for Paradise Island Adventure Golf, Craig Nichol who spills all about this brand new golfing adventure for Plymouth. Paradise Island Adventure Golf was founded in 2005 by father-son team Eddie and Joshua Dantzic who successfully grew the business from its first site set within Soar at intu Braehead to 6 sites across the UK. In December 2017, the business was sold to The Brighton Pier Group who have continued to develop and expand the business, opening more sites throughout the UK. The Plymouth site, set in Drake Circus The Barcode is PIAG’s 8th site. Other sites across the UK include Glasgow, Livingston,

Manchester, Sheffield, Derby, Rushden Lakes and Cheshire Oaks. Each site has a new adventure in store with their own unique mix of holes and tropical paradise theming and two 18 hole courses of a similar size.

Marketing Manager of Paradise Island Adventure Golf, Craig Nichol has worked for the business since 2007 seeing it develop and grow extensively over the years. Craig is responsible for creating, developing and implementing their annual marketing campaign as well as building brand awareness, designing and developing the website and app, and focusing on the digital and social media marketing presence of PIAG. Craig’s varied role across the business sees him travel the country to oversee the opening of new sites. Since starting at the company in 2007, Craig has had the pleasure of overseeing the launch of new 7 new sites including their newest site in Plymouth. The opportunity for PIAG to set up in Drake

Circus - The Barcode came about in early 2018 when they became aware of the leisure development.

“We are always on the lookout for new sites at suitable locations across the UK. The Barcode development ticked all the boxes; it’s a fantastic new leisure development right in the heart of Plymouth.” The Plymouth site which opened on Thursday 24th October and has faced its own challenges like any large development, but with an experienced team of contractors on board, Craig tells us the process has all gone to plan and they’re very excited about launching the new site in The Barcode. Adventure golf will bring a whole new level of fun for the people of Plymouth with much-anticipated amusement for all of the family. As the UK’s leading indoor adventure golf company, Paradise Island Adventure Golf, will bring to Plymouth their indoor adventure golf complex with the capacity to hold up to 300 players at a time. Anyone is welcome to join the fun and adventure from under 5’s to grandparents - no matter your age or ability anyone can play and enjoy adventure golf.

“We cater to everyone; our courses are also wheelchair friendly and accessible for disabled users.” This is crazy golf as you’ve never seen it before and offers an exciting and affordable day or night out for families, friends, couples and groups. It’s also a great place to host birthday parties for all ages and original corporate events. Adventure golf is for absolutely everyone.

“‘Forget CRAZY golf . . . this is ADVENTURE GOLF’ is one of our main tag lines.”

Everyone can relate to “crazy” or “mini” golf and although there are similarities adventure golf is not just about putting a ball into a hole, it is the whole customer experience including the sites and sounds you are taken on as you play around. Each site has two unique indoor adventure courses designed to take your ball on a rollercoaster adventure full with twists, turns, humps and bumps for everyone to enjoy. All whilst being surrounded by state of the art theming throughout the golf courses. The adventure golf venue offers a great day out for families, friends, couples and groups. Arriving at what appears to be a plane wreckage, turned pay booth, players can choose from one of two 18-hole adventure courses, each full of exciting features and special effects, designed for mini-golfers of all levels. The Temple Ruins takes players through treacherous swamps and deadly jungles designed to test the golfer’s skills, while the Tiki Trail offers adventurous terrain which passes menacing inhabitants and a bat-infested cave. Both courses culminate in the finale 19th hole, challenging players to putt a hole-in-one for a chance to win a free game pass. With so many leisure facilities available throughout Plymouth it can be hard to understand why we need another. But with a growing population of students, the expansion of homes throughout the city and the ever-increasing levels of tourism each year PIAG situated in The Barcode will provide a leisure outlet right in the heart of the city providing an experience unlike no other Plymouth has had before. Adventure golf is fast becoming one of the most popular attractions on the UK leisure scene and there is currently nothing like this available in the area, so this unique concept is sure to add more adventure to Plymouth. “We have designed our new leisure destination with the experience of the adventure golfer at the very centre and we are introducing some new holes and challenges never before seen at our venues.”

Every detail has been thoroughly considered by Craig and his team when creating PIAG Plymouth, from the design of the courses, the sound effects throughout, to the animated adventure golf experience in the app where you can keep track of scores, interact with the courses and view your loyalty card. As part of their marketing strategy, PIAG has a loyalty card scheme “the Maggie McCaw” card which can be collected in store and stamped on each visit, it’s simple and the more you play the more you save. The loyalty card feature is also available on their amazing Augmented App, available to download free on both apple and android. Plymouth Paradise Island Adventure Golf has 10 new team members including General Manager, Tom Sutherland who comes to the team with over 10 years experience in the leisure and family entertainment industry.

Paradise Island Adventure Golf, with two new sites in Rushden Lakes, April 2019 and Plymouth, October 2019. This exciting new attraction is going to be a huge hit with the people of Plymouth as it’s something the city hasn’t seen before. Set in the heart of Plymouth within Drake Circus -The Barcode, this new experience will see thousands of locals flock to the city centre in search of a thrilling adventure with their family, friends and work colleagues. Here at OM, we cannot wait to see the success brought to Paradise Island Adventure Golf.

Swing by and delve into a golfing adventure. For more information about Paradise Island Adventure Golf Plymouth, opening times and prices head to www.paradiseislandgolf.com/Plymouth

The team have been focusing on spreading the word of Plymouth’s newest leisure facility and have benefited greatly from the huge coverage Drake Circus - The Barcode has been receiving across all platforms. “Being a new tenant in such a large new development does help spread the word. The people of Plymouth can’t help but notice The Barcode building and naturally, it has attracted interest and attention throughout the build process.” Having such a wide customer demographic is great for Paradise Island Adventure Golf, but also a challenge for them to get the PIAG brand in front of kids, families, teenagers, students, adults, couples, groups, corporates/team building and birthday parties. Craig has been pushing online marketing and the use of social media to create interest and tell the story of the brand in the lead up to the launch. Future plans and new sites are always on Craig’s mind as he explains “We will look to grow more adventure golf sites throughout the UK. 2019 has been a fantastic year for

So why not give the gift of experience and enjoy making special memories together with our top picks for adventure days out and much more this Christmas!

A

s Christmas creeps closer we are all starting to think (and perhaps panic a little) about the same thing – what presents should I get everyone this year?! Well, this year we think the best gift is the gift of time, and more specifically, time with your family. So, to make life that little bit easier for you, we have hand-picked the best experiences in Devon and Cornwall for you and your loved ones to enjoy.

The best magical moments and unmissable experiences are waiting for you and your family this Christmas at the Eden Project. Meet Father Christmas’ Eden camp and sing along with his little band of elves. Take a spin (and perhaps a slip) on the ice rink, do a little festive shopping at the gift shop, and finish the day by enjoying an unmissable after-dark experience across the beautiful Eden gardens.

Devon and Cornwall are packed with exciting experiences that your family will love this Christmas. We have relaxing and pampering days for those that deserve a break, adventure days that will be sure to give you an adrenaline rush, and fun-filled family days that the kids are sure to remember.

Bounce your way into the new year this holiday period!

together. Check out their website and book you place for hours of family fun and hop, skip, and jump your way into the new year!

They offer skiers and snowboarders of all levels the facilities to learn and develop their ski and snowboard skills with qualified instructors. If skiing and snowboarding aren’t your thing then you can spend a day out with the family getting stuck into snow-tubing, tobogganing and viper dropping. Winter really is ‘snow’ much fun!

Forget the snow, point me to the tropical paradise! Maybe you want to forget the cold weather and want to experience a tropical paradise for the day. In which case don’t forget Plymouth’s brand new Adventure Golf. Why not ‘swing’ by the UK’s leading indoor adventure golf company for a day of family fun at Paradise Island Adventure Golf. It’s the most wine-derful time of the year! Maybe you know someone who needs a break from the everyday cooking chaos that takes place every evening after a busy workday. What could be a better gift than spoiling them to a tasty meal out! Devon and Cornwall offer a scrumptious selection of restaurants, including Kuku, a Japanese Cusine restaurant in Plymouth. Kuku are celebrating Christmas this year with exclusive Christmas menus, designed to make everyone feel festive, with a Japanese twist! Whether the gift is intended for a romantic date, or as part of a family and friends group, their signature tasting menus are a great alternative to the usual gift-giving experience. Check out their Christmas menu online and reserve your table this year for a totally new Christmas experience to remember.

What better way to spend time with your loved ones – a holiday of course!

Perhaps you can’t afford to give your loved ones a pre-paid holiday package, but what you can do is start a savings pot. Why not wash-up one of those old jam jars and get creative with it – stickers, glitters, ribbons, anything to make it truly personal. Once you are done getting sticky, pop some money inside and attach a note about the holiday you want to save up for and share with them. It may not seem like much now, but just wait until you are away on a beach in the Carribean or hitting it up in Vegas, spending each and every day with your loved ones – it will be so worth it! Instead of pushing your way through the crowds of people in the shopping malls all scrambling to find the ‘perfect’ gift this Christmas, why not spend that time being around the ones you love and enjoy a new experience together that you can remember in years to come. We hope you have some fabulous festive fun and have your elf a merry little Christmas.

Most of us tend to forget the local businesses we have right on our doorstep in Plymouth. When it comes to flowers we opt to go online to order as it’s ‘more convenient’ for our busy working lives and a ‘cheaper’ option. But what is cheap when it comes to flowers? Would you rather spend your money on a bouquet from a website or hand pick fresh flowers yourself giving it that personal touch? Whether you’re after a bouquet for a friend who lives in London, a beautiful display of wedding flowers or a surprise for your partner on Valentine’s day; H.Watts Florist are on hand to help!

O

reston village is home to a close knit hub of businesses, one of those being H.Watts Florist. We caught up with owner of the successful florist Sally, who tells us about the history behind H.Watts Florist, what services they provide and what their plans are for the future. H.Watts Florist is situated at the centre of Oreston Village and has been serving Plymouth and the surrounding area with extravagant floral designs since 1952. The florist the longest-standing business in the area and has run in the same family since being founded by Harry Watts in 1952. Sally has always worked as a florist, starting her first job as a florist at 14 years old in Exeter where she grew up. Her move to Plymouth when she married saw her start working at H.Watts Florist, having worked there for 20 years, she is now the owner of the successful shop and is continually growing from strength to strength.

Taking over ownership of the florist wasn’t initially on the cards for Sally when previous owner Tom decided to retire in 2013. However, after some persuasion from her husband, she took a leap of faith and has been running the florist for 6 years now. Running a business isn’t easy but Sally takes it in her stride and pushes business every direction possible. H.Watts Florist cater for all occasions from corporate events, birthdays, anniversaries and weddings to more regretful circumstances such as funerals. No job is ever too big or small for Sally and her team. The team at H.Watts Florist consists of 3 florists and 1 apprentice florist who create spectacular floral displays and 3 delivery drivers who spend their days delivering the amazing flowers to customers across Plymouth city centre and within a 10-mile radius of the city. H.Watts Florist source their flowers from Holland where the majority of flowers worldwide are shipped from, however Sally buys locally grown flowers when possible. The seasons changing means that there’s never a dull moment as a florist with new trends constantly appearing. When it comes to seasonal flowers, Sally explains “I like the seasons changing and we try and encourage people to have seasonal flowers as much as possible, but if they want a particular flower that’s out of season we can get that from them” The business year never ends for H.Watts Florist with Christmas, Mother’s Day and Valentine’s day being the busiest occasions

of the year and wedding season keeping the shop busy in between. Sally tells us that they have a close relationship with the other businesses in the village of Oreston. “We have a strong village atmosphere where we always support each other.” Over 60 years in business has enabled H.Watts Florist to build a strong reputation in Plymouth and their huge stock of flowers puts them ahead in the market. When asked about the future of the business, Sally explains - “I’d like to see it still as a family-owned business and still serving the local community. I’m not the normal businesswoman who wants millions of pounds. I’m just happy having a little flower shop, doing what I love” The florist has had huge success over the years with word of mouth from customers helping grow business day by day. And now Christmas is around the corner, business is picking up rapidly for Sally and her team. They are running wreath making workshops in the weeks leading up to Christmas that are in high demand from the people of Plymouth. Sally has a clear passion for floristry and providing a personal, reliable and friendly service to the locals in Oreston and the wider population of Plymouth. To find out more about H.Watts Florist, their prices and more about their workshops head to www.hwattsflorist. co.uk, call the shop on 01752 403617 or pop into the shop to chat with a member of the team.

The Wool Tree

T

he Wool Tree is a small, independent arts and crafts shop specialising in supplying wool and other materials for all of your knitting, crocheting and sewing needs. Owner, Teresa, tells us how a drastic change of career saw her open the shop and run it as a popular business in the heart of Oreston. After working as air cabin crew for both British Airways and Air Southwest for 10 years, from 2002 to 2011, Teresa was unfortunately made redundant after the closure of Plymouth City Airport in 2011. Despite this being a difficult time, Teresa threw herself into part-time work in retail and then came across the Wool Palette based on the Plymstock Broadway where she helped out the owner. “I have always been interested in sewing and knitting, it is a passion of mine” The owner of the Wool Palette retired in 2017 and Teresa decided she wanted to open her own sewing and knitting shop. With the rates on The Broadway being very high, Teresa was seeking somewhere local and eventually found her current premises in Oreston.

After viewing the small shop, Teresa was unsure as to whether it could work due to limited space but decided “where there’s a means, there’s a way” and she opened The Wool Tree on 1st September 2017. Two years on and The Wool Tree is flourishing with regular customers purchasing materials as well as popular workshops being run by Teresa teaching crochet and knitting. The workshops are important to Teresa as she wants to focus on providing a 1-1 service therefore only allows 4 people to attend each class so that everyone gets the attention and focus they need to succeed. Classes are run once a week at the moment; however, Teresa is looking to start running them 3-4 times a week. Teresa also runs a crochet workshop alongside Kirsty where they teach both right and left handed crocheting which is very rare.

The Wool Tree. Within the next 5 years, she is hoping to have an online shop where customers can order suppliers, as well as hoping to increase the frequency of workshops and teach a wider range of techniques. Passion for what you do is extremely important and we do not doubt that Teresa bursts with passion for The Wool Tree and all it stands for. Her dedication to providing a premium service gives The Wool Tree a warm and welcome feel. “It was the best and hardest decision of my life, but I wouldn’t change it despite all of the challenges”

Not only does The Wool Tree sell materials and run classes, Teresa also takes orders to knit and crochet gifts and has a range of gifts to buy in the shop.

Teresa loves being based in Oreston with the other business helping to support each other, getting together for Christmas and other special occasions.

For a small shop in the heart of Oreston Village, Teresa is always looking ahead at the latest trends and has big plans for

as well as increasing the team members to have a now fully-fledged team of hairstylists and a beautician. Taking on more staff was a priority for Julia to allow the salon to expand and provide the best and widest range of services possible.

P

eace Hair and Beauty has sat in the heart of Oreston Village for over 10 years, providing hair and beauty services for the local village and the general public across Plymouth. We caught up with owner Julia Calvert and senior stylist Annette Doyle to find out what the salon has to offer and how it has changed over since Julia has taken over. Julia took over ownership of Peace Hair and Beauty in June 2014 and since then the salon has grown rapidly. Previous owner and now senior stylist at the salon, Annette, owned the salon for 2 years before deciding that she wanted to take a step back from the business side and focus on hairstyling. A fresh set of business eyes from Julia proved to benefit the salon greatly. She transformed the look of the salon into the stylish and modern layout it now has,

Before taking over, Peace Hair and Beauty had two stylists and an apprentice. They have expanded swiftly to 9 members of staff, with 7 stylists, 1 apprentice and 1 beautician. The list of hair and beauty services offered by the salon is endless. Women, men and children are all welcome with hair services available to all. An in house beautician allows the salon to provide a large array of beauty treatments from nail services, waxing, makeup, skin treatments, tanning and so much more.

The success of the salon was put to the test in 2018 at the Best Salon in Plymouth Awards where they achieved an amazing second place against all other salons in Plymouth.

“Julia has more passion for the business side”

With three other businesses surrounding the salon, Julia tells us “We are happy in Oreston, it’s like a little family and we all support one another”

Since taking over the salon, Julia has pushed the online presence of the salon via their website and social media channels such as Facebook which has allowed business to increase considerably.

It is clear to see that Julia has a true passion for business and developing the salon into the best it can be. For more information about Peace Hair and Beauty visit www.Peace-HairBeauty.co.uk or call 01752 402222.

It started with carrot cake and a teacup, now 5 years down the line with a wonderful cafe in Oreston Village, 14 awards and their cakes even reaching Australia, Just Like Mumma’s owners Suzie and Molly Douglas are loving working together as mother and daughter doing what they love and do best... baking!

N

ot many of us have the privilege of spending every day with our mum, let alone working alongside them doing what we love. Suzie and Molly Douglas, owners of the amazing bakery and cafe Just Like Mumma’s, get to spend every day doing what they love together and achieving success left, right and centre. We spent an exciting afternoon with Suzie and Molly learning the story behind Just Like Mumma’s and how they’ve become the successful bakery and cafe they are. The mother-daughter duo have both had a passion for cooking and baking since they were young with Suzie passing her skills and love for baking onto Molly at a young age. The name Just Like Mumma’s came from Molly wanting to be “Just like Mumma” when she was younger, so when the time came for them to set up their business together the name was very fitting. What started as a hobby for Suzie has now turned into an extremely successful business with a bakery and cafe that both she and Molly enjoy running together. Having worked as a pastry chef for many years, baking has been no stranger to Suzie. Once she had aced her recipe for their famous carrot cake by baking for family and friends they suggested she set up her own business so after years of exploring, in 2014 she finally took the plunge with Molly who had recently completed her chef’s training at City College Plymouth. “I found that my passion for cooking was, bigger when I was working with mum, she fuels my enthusiasm and always has!” Just Like Mumma’s became a reality in 2014 when they started to run the cafe at a local rugby club. But after a year, Suzie and Molly decided they wanted to move to smaller premises that they could make their own with a village feel.

26 November 2019

After searching for suitable premises they came across the bakery in Oreston Village and instantly knew that it would be perfect for what they needed, and after a few adjustments to the layout, they opened their very own Just Like Mumma’s cafe and bakery on 26th July 2017. “We didn’t want something in town. We didn’t want something on the high street. We wanted something where people could walk in and have home-cooked food with that homely feel. And we want them to feel welcome.” With Plymouth being clustered with large bakeries and chains, Just Like Mumma’s is a breath of fresh air for the local community in Plymstock and the rest of Plymouth, providing fresh and handmade goods for their cafe and 11 other cafes and eateries across the Southwest. Often working 99 hour weeks, both Molly and Suzie pour their heart and soul into the business. Having worked hard to perfect the baked goods for their cafe, the wholesales and any orders they take on, the pair have picked up an incredible 14 awards altogether since opening, being 4 times bakery champions in 4 consecutive years with Taste of the West - the smallest and only business to achieve this. Their awards range from the famous Carrot Cake winning champion at the Taste of the West Awards in 2016 to their Bakewell Tart winning in 2017, Deluxe Victoria in 2018 and Coffee in 2019. However, out of their 14 awards, the most important to Molly is winning the Customer Service Award at the Devon Life Food and Drink Awards in 2018. Just Like Mumma’s pride themselves on providing a warm and welcoming environment for all to enjoy, whether you just want a cup of coffee to start your day or a catch up with some friends over their famous carrot cake or a slice of their awardwinning Bakewell tart. Suzie and Molly are

always there to provide you with topnotch service, excellent coffee from The Sunday Collab, cakes, brunches and light lunches, as well an ear to natter away to. “We are two peas in a pod” Suzie and Molly have a wonderful bond and explain that Suzie is more interested in the baking and Molly loves to explore the decorative side working alongside H.Watts Florist located on the same road. “If you’ve got an amazing florist down the street, then why not work with them” Just Like Mumma’s love supporting the local businesses surrounding them with a strong friendship with The Wool Tree, H.Watts Florist, and Peace Hair and Beauty. They frequently meet up for community events and help one another succeed in business. Molly and Suzie have a unique bond and they’ve achieved incredible success in the few years they’ve been in business. Their success goes down to their commitment and dedication to doing what they love with the help of family members Alice, Alan and of course Victoria their little delivery van. It is clear to us that baking is more than a passion for Suzie and Molly as they bake incredible quality cakes and provide exceptional customer service at all time. We do not doubt that their success will continue for years to come and we can’t wait to taste more of their delicious cakes! DINING OUT THIS CHRISTMAS Take the stress out of the festive season and consider dining out at your favourite restaurants for Christmas and New Year

W

hile the Christmas period is considered the best and merriest time of year, it certainly doesn’t go without stress. Preparing Christmas dinner and Boxing Day or New Year feasts can, without doubt, be one of the most stressful parts of the festive period; so why not take away the unnecessary stress and consider an alternative to home cooking over the Christmas holidays? Dining out on Christmas Day is like eating marmite, you’ll either love it or hate it. There are so many reasons why eating out over the festive period is worth considering. Christmas should be all about spending quality time together as a family or with friends but often the stress, rush and hype of Christmas gets in the way of what it’s all about and therefore more of us are turning to alternatives such as dining out.

Some people argue that it’s not Christmas if you don’t have a homecooked family Christmas dinner, but how many of us actually enjoy every aspect of the traditional Christmas dinner?

Getting together with friends and family is more common than ever over the holiday period, with most of us taking the time out to meet up with loved ones for dinner and drinks.

And whilst it’s the happiest time of year for most of us; cooking Christmas dinner always tends to cause tension in the family with one person usually slaving away in the kitchen for hours on end to serve up a feast for all and let’s face it, it isn’t always appreciated. There’s always that one family member that doesn’t like turkey because it’s ‘too dry’ or isn’t the biggest fan of vegetables so more food goes to waste than is necessary. Or you didn’t make enough pigs in blankets for that greedy member of the family to have 10 on their plate. It’s an endless cycle of not being able to please everyone. Nobody wants to get up at 5 am on Christmas morning to turn the oven on, prepare the turkey and the twelve other components that are served up with Christmas dinner and then set the table for the ten family members coming over.

And if you get past dinner without any family arguments then one part of the day that really will cause some family tension is the washing up after dinner. Nobody is keen to help because Nan and Grandad are too pre-occupied with the Queen’s speech, mum wants to watch the Eastenders Christmas special or the children are too focused on their brand new iPhone or PlayStation that must be set up right away. The real downside to cooking at home for Christmas is the mess that’s caused in the kitchen with various pots, pans, plates, cutlery, baking trays and about every utensil in the kitchen needing to be cleaned up ready for the remaining holiday festivities. Take that stress away and make it a relaxing and washing up free experience by dining out.

Although the idea of dining out at Christmas might seem strange and very non-traditional to most of us, it can take the stress off all the family with an array of menu options to choose from and a merry atmosphere for all to enjoy. Dining out doesn’t have to be dramatic, most restaurants can cater to every diet out there so dining out is becoming easier and more convenient than ever before. We all want to enjoy Christmas dinner, but when you’re the host it can be hard to really take it all in, enjoy the day and make the most of the festive celebrations.

Dining out will allow you to sit back, relax and enjoy the entirety of the day without having to worry about if everyone is happy and enjoying the meal you spent hours preparing.

According to statistics from Bookatable, over the festive period in the UK, we spend on average £500 on Christmas food for the entire period and most of it goes to waste due to overbuying. Depending on how many you’re dining with it may actually turn out to be cheaper to dine out than eat in at home. It might seem more expensive to dine out over Christmas but if you add up all you would normally spend on the Christmas dinner, Boxing Day feasts as well as the New Year buffet and drinks then it’ll work out a lot more wallet-friendly to dine out. Staying home often sees us overspend on food items that we won’t necessarily need or even eat. Dining out means we are less likely to waste food and we get to enjoy exactly what we chose from the menu. The great thing about dining out over the entire festive period is that everybody is catered for. From vegetarians, vegans, coeliacs, children, and those that hate to eat their greens! You could break away from the traditional Christmas dinner and head to your favourite Italian restaurant to enjoy some pizza, or you could even opt for more exotic and try Mexican cuisine. The possibilities are endless when dining out over the festive period. If you prefer a

family Christmas at home and enjoy the chaos that it involves then maybe dining out on Boxing Day or over New Year would be better suited to you. Boxing Day is usually a day for lounging around in pyjamas, cleaning up the copious amounts of wrapping paper and watching rubbish TV.

But why not break tradition this year and get out with your family and friends for an afternoon or evening of delicious food at your favourite restaurant?

to catch up with friends and family you’ve not seen throughout the year.

Make the most of what our amazing city has to offer over the festive period, take the unnecessary stress away and spend the much-needed quality time with family out of the home and into your local restaurants.

If a traditional Christmas Day dinner isn’t your thing then why not head to Plymouth’s favourite Indian Restaurant - Shapla Balti Cuisine for their Christmas Day lunch! Whether you’re a korma lover or like to spice things up with a steaming hot Vindaloo Mr Ali and his wonderful team have got you covered with their wonderful menu to help you break tradition this Christmas! You can make the festive grocery shop much cheaper but missing out the cheeseboard you think will get gobbled up on Boxing Day but never does as everyone is still full from the huge Christmas dinner! Plymouth has a huge array of eateries to take advantage of and the festive period is without no doubt the best time of year

Autumn recipes

to welcome

the season Famed for their modern approach to classic British dining, acclaimed chefs, restauranteurs and brothers, Chris and James Tanner, are celebrating 20 years of serving up a storm in the South West. Here they share simple recipes, perfect for welcoming the autumn season.

Spiced Carrot and Pumpkin Soup 3 x Carrots, peeled & finely chopped, 800g pumpkin, peeled & finely chopped, 1 x Large white onion, chopped, 1 Tsp Fresh Chopped Ginger, 2 Fresh Thyme Sprigs (teared leaves), 1 Ltr Hot Vegetable Stock, 2 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil, (sea salt & black pepper to taste) For the spice mix: ¼ Tsp Ground Nutmeg, ½ Tsp Sumac, ¼ Tsp Ground Coriander, ½ Paprika One Heat the olive oil in a large pot over a medium heat. Add the onions carrots & pumpkin, followed by the thyme & spice mix. Cook for approx. 10 minutes until the vegetables begin to soften & season to taste. Two Pour on the hot stock & simmer for 10- 15 minutes until the vegetables are cooked through. Turn off the heat. Allow the soup to cool slightly. Remove a cup full of the stock from the pot. Now liquidize/blend in a food processor until smooth, adding the set aside stock if necessary, until reaching the desired consistency. Three Serve with a little chopped coriander & a swirl of olive oil.

Autumnal Sausage and Butternut Squash Traybake 8 thick butchers’ pork and herb sausages, 500g potatoes 1 butternut squash, 2 tbsp. clear honey, 1 large red onion, cut into petals, 3 rashers of smoked streaky bacon, cut into thick lardons, 4 cloves of minced garlic, 2 sprigs of picked thyme, 6 shredded sage leaves, 80g Stilton cheese, Zest and juice of 1 lemon, 4 tbsp. olive oil One Preheat the oven to 220 °C/gas mark 7. Two Take the garlic, lemon zest, juice and the thyme, and mix in a bowl with two tbsps. of olive oil. Rub the mixture all over the sausages, season with salt and pepper and leave out at room temperature to marinate whilst you prepare the vegetables. Three Take a large roasting tin and pop it into the oven to heat up while you prepare the vegetables. Cut the potatoes and the squash into two-inch chunks, then cut the onion into petals. Toss them in a bowl with the bacon lardons and remaining oil and seasoning, ensuring that all are well coated. four Next, put the mixed ingredients into the pre-heated roasting tin and shake gently to make sure your ingredients are evenly spread. Lay over the pork sausages and add any remaining marinade. five Roast in the hot oven for 20 minutes, shaking the tray and turning the ingredients half way through cooking. With five minutes of cooking time left, remove your tray from the oven and drizzle the honey, scatter the shredded sage, and crumble the stilton cheese on top. Return to the oven and cook for the remaining 5 minutes. six Once cooked, remove from the oven and serve piping hot with some serve with seasonal curly kale. Lovely!

Learning of the shocking and sudden death of the elderly Harlan, all are equally horrified by the confusing turn of events, and equally baffled as to who the culprit is.

An all-female trio of international crime fighters, Charlie’s Angels, returns to the big screen on the orders of the ever-mysterious Charlie. Lead programmer Elena Houghlin teams up with Sabina Wilson and Jane Kano at the Townsend Agency as she tries to stop a revolutionary technology from getting into the wrong hands. Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska star in this reboot of the 2000 and 2003 Hollywood blockbusters and the 1970s TV series of the same name.
