MOVING HOUSE? Here are the keys to success... • New research highlights that one in ten UK adults (11%), intend to spend money on moving home over the next year. • This is despite the recent boom as the stamp duty holiday deadline approaches in September, where many have already upped sticks. • The sudden influx of house movers has led to reputable removal companies being inundated, alongside ‘cowboy’ removing firms.
O
ver a million¹ homes were sold in the UK last year during the Coronavirus crisis, yet the housing market has remained robust despite the significant challenges thrown at it. The race for space is continuing in 2021 and with the stamp duty holiday tapering off until the end of September, a new study* from the Furniture & Home Improvement Ombudsman (FHIO) reveals that 11% of UK adults still plan to spend money on moving house over the next 12 months, despite the financial incentive of the stamp duty holiday coming to an end.
removal companies when transporting your most prized possessions. For those planning to move home in the future, below are some top tips and points of note when hiring a removal firm. • Pre-Contract: When looking at removal companies, check that they’re able to offer alternative dispute resolution to customers if things go wrong. This might be via membership of a trade body such as the British Association of Removers (BAR) and Association of Independent Movers (AIM) or individual membership of the Ombudsman. This is an important safeguard which will enable you to have your claims independently reviewed in the event of a dispute. At the Ombudsman, this is free to consumers and provides a decision that is binding on the business if it is accepted by them. Of course, you always retain your rights to go to court.
• The Contract: When agreeing to a contract for removals services, it’s important to carefully check the terms and conditions, making note of any express terms such as the price and date, along with any standard provisions (for example what happens if they need to cancel). Terms need to be fair to both parties and should be set out in a way which is clear so that you can understand their practical significance, so don’t be afraid to ask for clarity before you sign-up to them. • What if things change? If circumstances suddenly change and you need to alter the terms that you’ve agreed to, make sure you notify the trader straight away and agree any differences in writing. This may amount to a contract variation so it is very important that all parties understand the changes and
Furthermore, a staggering one in five (21%) of 25 – 34-year old’s plan to spend their hard-earned cash on relocating over the same timeframe. Wales is the region in which most adults plan to invest on upping sticks over the next year (18%), followed closely by London (17%) and the South West (16%) as illustrated below. This is in stark contrast to the East of England and the West Midlands (5%). Case files at the Ombudsman all form part of the unique insight into things that go wrong, which result in disputes involving

Home what they mean in practice for the way in which the services will be provided. • Understanding your responsibilities: Even though the contract is for the trader to provide services, there are certain obligations that fall on you and it’s important that these are understood. For example, you’ll have to pay an agreed price at a specified time and may have to pack certain belongings in a specific way. There may even be some goods that can’t be transported by the removal company and you’ll need to know what happens if this is the case. Following the move, one of your main responsibilities will be to check goods and report damage/breakages etc. within a certain timeframe. It’s very important that consumers understand their obligations and seek extensions (in writing), if they cannot meet the deadline. • What happens if things go wrong? Traders have to deliver services with reasonable care and skill and, when providing information, this is on the basis that it will be binding where a consumer relies on it. There may be insurance implications for damaged or missing goods and this should be understood at the outset. In general, we advise home movers to: • report any issues promptly;
• give the removal company the chance to put things right; • keep a written record, photographs and as much other evidence as possible. Kevin Grix, CEO and Chief Ombudsman, Furniture and Home Improvement Ombudsman said, “Our homes are our most valuable possessions and using property packing and removal companies that are part of a trade body or members of our voluntary, not-for-profit and government approved Ombudsman scheme provides consumers with additional peace of mind.

Each year millions of us around the nation decide to travel up and down the country with the desire to visit friends and family, commute to work or flee to a well-deserved holiday destination. Making those all-important connections to see loved ones again after the pandemic has never been easier, with cost-effective and informative travel, enabling us to return to our daily lives with minimal stress and worry. One such company is Stagecoach, who are here to provide us with an efficient and frequent coach service with their ever-growing, successful Falcon service. Expect outstanding, friendly customer service every step of the way along with unexpected luxuries including charging sockets and free Wi-Fi; which has come to earn them the title of the UK’s favourite and most successful travel company!
I
n 1980, brother and sister Brian Souter and Ann Gloag decided to start a small recreational vehicle and minibus hire business called Gloagtrotter in Perth, Scotland. With only £25,000 of family inheritance, they decided to put the small nest egg to good use and brought 2 large buses. The couple soon became recognised as a reliable and courteous use of transport to muchneeded destinations around Scotland, that together with their thriving polite and friendly attitude, the company quickly grew. Now, this vast expanding commercial company renamed as Stagecoach has taken the UK by storm becoming the UK’s biggest bus service provider, with over 25,000 employees! OM met with Leading Driver, James Palmer who has been with the company for 3 years, Senior Controller, William BushallCrane who began his Stagecoach career in London and has now worked his way up through the company over his 11 years of service and Marketing Manager, Aisha O’Connor who joined the company in June 2019.
Meet some of the falcons passengers who use the coach to get them back to the office, classes and family days out.
10 September 2021
The team tell us how they’re focusing on customer retention, why you should choose Stagecoach and how their Falcon service has grown rapidly over its four years of operation. Stagecoach South West has been running for 26 years, providing the South West with a fleet of almost 500 buses, 65 of them being in Plymouth along with 10 Flacon buses running between Plymouth and Bristol every hour from 4.15 am to 19.00 pm! The business has developed over it’s 26 years, now hosting 1200 employees including 185 drivers! The Falcon was first created in 2016 by Stagecoach, and during the small 4 year period it’s been running they’ve seen a whopping 1 million passengers use this service, with continuous growing numbers! The Falcon is estimated to take only 3 hours from Plymouth to Bristol and has been a necessity for the towns and villages along the route with no real transport connecting them to Bristol. Other than trains, there was no service running directly between Plymouth and Bristol throughout the day and night, Stagecoach South West saw a gap in the

market and the Falcon was born. In conjunction with this, the Falcon has supplied the population of Plymouth, Bristol and all the other stops along the way including Exeter, Taunton, and Sidcot the availability to travel freely at their convenience through the day and night. What makes the falcon so appealing is their fantastic frequency of coach services’ travelling every hour beginning at 4:15 am till 19:00 pm, then every 2 hours after that. One of the main attractions about the falcon is its flexibility, a ‘hop on hop off’ system has been introduced, just as you would with a normal city bus; allowing those lastminute plans to go-ahead! With their invincible competitive prices, the Falcon caters to everyone allowing discounts for under 25’s, over 60’s and even providing group deals with it costing only £58 return for 5 people! The Falcon not only offers regularly occurring coaches and unbeatable prices, but outstanding customer service. Each driver is ensured to provide a great positive attitude and
www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk
Health & Leisure present a friendly welcome, willing to go the extra mile for every passenger. Before the journey sets off from Plymouth the driver will be sure to give an announcement explaining each drop-off and when you’ll be arriving at your destination, providing a simple yet personal experience, something you don’t see elsewhere. ‘These drivers have all sorts of qualifications and come from all walks of life but they’re coach drivers because they choose to be and they enjoy it and no two days are the same!’ If you’re looking for an easy and efficient route to Bristol, maybe you’re catching a flight, treating yourself to some retail therapy or visiting family, you want to ensure you’ve got reliable, hassle free transport right on your doorstep. Tickets are available to buy online by simply heading over to Stagecoach’s sister company Megabus where you can be sure to guarantee your chosen seats. The falcon offers the flexibility at it’s finest with return tickets being used within 28 days of the outbound journey, an extremely versatile system for those travelling away for a few days with no chosen return date! There is a maximum of 30 seats available to reserve on a falcon and 31 available to the public. Due to the popularity of Stagecoach, the vision is to soon expand their vehicles, providing supplementary double decker coaches (carrying 74 passengers) and potentially increasing the frequency of the coaches to one every half an hour! Priding themselves on the fact they’re ‘all about being connected’. Stagecoach is aware that being associated with other companies is a vital key to allow a smooth working service, that appeals to all. With connecting services meaning people can hop off the coach and jump straight onto a park and ride using the same ticket free of charge! Onboard the coach you’re not only able to pay for your ticket contactless, but free Wi-Fi access along with being able to charge your phones and/or computers at your seat, with every seat being provided with a USB portable and charging socket. Meaning for a lot the public who use the falcon to commute to and from work they’re able to use this time efficiently and productively.
Pat the Falcon mascot! Stagecoach abides by certain values which are highlighted through their involvement with charity events, for example getting involved with the St Luke’s Hospice Elmer’s Big Parade in 2019, sponsoring their own Elmer the Elephant. Not to forget the individual work that goes on behind closed doors with the courageous team members running marathons and taking part in other charity events in aid of raising money for their chosen charities, raising over 20k for charities in 2018 alone! ‘We work with everyday hero’s in their own rights’ As a national company, Stagecoach is looking to achieve huge growth within the next 3 years. With the hope to potentially provide an increase in the fleet of vehicles the Falcon has to offer with larger coaches, which will help combat the growing capacity of people. Not only that but include even more frequent transport, as they are hoping to increase the service frequency to every half an hour and accumulating more stops along the route! ‘Our vision is as much about the people we serve as the business we run. We don’t just want stagecoach to thrive, we want to have happy and engaged people who build trusted and connected relationships with our communities because we value how important our services are to their everyday lives.’ With the resilience, positivity, and drive shown by the team at Stagecoach, it is clear to see that the future is most definitely bright. Here at OM, we are excited to see what the future has in store with the growing success of this company!

MDL’s eco gym opens on 1st September in Plymouth Join for free!
M
DL Marinas is delighted to announce that its first MDL Fitness eco gym is opening on the 1st September at its Queen Anne’s Battery marina in Plymouth.
To celebrate the opening of its flagship green gym, MDL Fitness will be waiving the joining fee, with new members being able to join for free from now until 3rd October 2021. For as little as 69 pence per day, local residents, berth holders and visitors can transform their workouts into a power source in this new 35-plus station gym, which features the innovative SportArt ECOPOWR™ equipment. The ECO-POWR™ treadmills, cross trainers and bicycles harness up to 74% of a user’s kinetic energy spent exercising, before converting it to utility grade electricity. Putting into perspective how much electricity can be generated, when tested, two ECO-POWR™ bikes used for
a collective total of 47 hours produced enough electricity to power a laptop for 74.8 hours or a LCD flat screen TV for 32 hours. By simply plugging the cardio equipment into a standard outlet, MDL Fitness will send the AC power generated by the gym’s members back through the gym’s power grid to offset its energy consumption and reduce its carbon footprint.
An open weekend will be held on the 2-3 October 2021, where anyone interested in joining can come along with their friends, use the gym for free and meet the new fitness team.
By working out on an ECO- POWR™ treadmill for an hour twice a week for a year it’s also possible to create a CO2 emission offset* equivalent to 62 lbs of coal burned, 138 miles driven in a car or 7,197 Smart phones charged. But it’s not just the exercise equipment that makes MDL Fitness a standout ecofriendly fitness centre. “We recognise that our core marina business is not yet carbon neutral, but MDL Fitness and our green gyms are another step to reducing our carbon footprint and achieving this,” says Tim Mayer, MDL’s sales and marketing director. “The whole gym has been built with sustainability in mind. The flooring has been made from recycled tyres, the ventilation system has heat recovery making it more energy efficient and the gym furniture comes from a sustainable source. Even the staff uniforms are made from 100% recycled plastic.”

All your skin problems dealt with! Safe in our hands!
D
r Harker is delighted to announce that in the recent CQC Inspection the Erme Skin Clinic was awarded the Rating Good Overall and Good in all 5 categories: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-Led. Dr Harker says, “All the staff and myself work extremely hard to ensure all the CQC standards are maintained”. We strive to give the patient best care through their journey from first contact right through to the end of post-procedure care. The full CQC report can be viewed at: www.cqc.org.uk/directory/1-6557501766
Look better feel better! Is your face spoilt by an ugly mole, unsightly cyst or wart, or do you have drooping jowls, miserable down -turned corners of the mouth or a hostile frown?
“exceptional clinical need”. Firstly, an injection of local anaesthetic is given to the area, similar to that at the dentist, which will only take a few seconds. The actual removal process will depend on the type of blemish, size, situation and complexity and will be explained carefully to you. The possibility of side effects, for example infection, will be evaluated for your particular case and discussed with you. The specimen will be checked under the microscope at the hospital laboratory. Every effort will be made to achieve the optimum result with minimal or no scar. Dr Harker can perform a total cutaneous dermoscopic examination (mole check) and advise which moles would be suitable for removal if causing irritation or nuisance. If she finds any lesion suspicious for cancer she will refer the patient immediately to the NHS. The Erme Skin Clinic specialises in the Silhouette Soft thread lift to help sagging
in the lower face, neck or brow. Harley Street trained, Dr Harker has a wealth of experience in performing these procedures over the past 5 years. As we age the lower face loses its definition and the tissues around the mouth and jawline become loose and drooping. The procedure is called Silhouette as the patient’s side profile improves and it is called Soft as it is patient- friendly and easier for the patient to tolerate than the barbed threads. Without the risks of a general anaesthetic or of plastic surgery these threads are placed just 4mm under the skin. It is a short out-patient procedure with minimal downtime. The whole system is biodegradable and bio-resorbable leaving no trace in the body after it is completely dissolved. This is a subtle lift; each thread pulls back a maximum of 1 cm and the lift lasts for between 18 months and 2 years but it is surprising what a difference this can make. The procedure is individualised to each patient. Under local anaesthetic, typically
Dr Harker offers a range of treatments to deal with such skin problems. She specialises in minor operations under local anaesthetic using Radiofrequency surgery to remove troublesome lesions in all parts of the body and is assisted by fully trained nurses. Men and women of all ages can be helped by these. Cosmetic moles, skin tags, cysts and blemishes are not eligible for treatment under the NHS cosmetic policy which only allows such operations under conditions of

There is a dual action in that there is an immediate lift visible, then over the ensuing months this lift is maintained by new collagen production stimulated by the bidirectional cones and also skin quality improves. No incision is required, as the suture is inserted using a fine needle. A common problem as we age that the area under chin area and the neck becomes loose and drooping. A thread lift can improve this and make the person look younger. A brow thread lift can also be used to lift the brow or create the fox-eye look.
Inside the Erme Skin Clinic quality such as Peels, Diamondtome microdermabrasion, Dermaroller Micro needling, RF treatment of facial spider veins, cryotherapy and RF facial skin tightening.
Please visit the website for more details/ procedure video. Dr Harker offers a call-back service and then a consultation where she assesses you fully and gives an honest opinion whether this is suitable for you. The patient then returns for the procedure having reflected on all the information.
FILLERS
Fillers replace lost Hyaluronic acid, revitalising and adding volume to the skin, instantly reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles for a natural, “lifted” appearance. Dr Harker offers advanced techniques with non-permanent soft tissue fillers that can lift the corners of the mouth, replace lost volume in the cheeks, reduce the “bar code” lines above the mouth, alleviate deep furrows between the brows, lift the brow, rhinoplasty (nose shape correction) fill scars, lift the temples (Kardashian look). Dr Harker is always aiming for subtle, natural-looking results.
WRINKLE RELAXING INJECTIONS
Using Botulinum toxin injections she can relax expression lines between the brows, “crow’s feet “around the eyes and relax other facial muscles that cause wrinkles. She has 14 years’ experience and trained initially with an NHS consultant ophthalmologist. Botulinum toxin has a wide range of medical uses, (migraine, neck pain, cerebral palsy in children, post stroke in adults, irritable bladder for example) and in the correct hands of a properly trained doctor now is a wellestablished, successful treatment. It is a painless, rapid, targeted way of achieving smooth, youthful skin.
Thank goodness life is becoming more normal again! During the pandemic the Erme Skin Clinic has had every possible anti Covid measure in place. We have a Virus Killer that extracts 99.99% of viruses and bacteria from the atmosphere which patients, and staff have appreciated a lot; it’s made everyone feel a lot safer, in addition to frequent hand washing, scrupulous attention to hygiene, PPE, one way system through the Clinic and only one person at a time in the waiting room and countless other measures. Every patient is triaged before they attend to check they are well and it is suitable for them to attend .It is helpful and reassuring for everyone if the patient has had their Covid vaccination before attending. As the Covid situation has improved the Erme Skin Clinic has carried on with its stringent measures intact until we are finally informed that the pandemic status is over. Dr Harker also offers treatments for Acne, Rosacea and poor skin
Dr Harker is passionate about her work and strives to achieve the best outcome for each patient. Dr Harker has worked as a GP for over 30 years ,developing a Dermatology specialism over the last 20 years. She worked in the Dermatology department of NHS hospitals and as an NHS GP in Dermatology. The Erme Skin Clinic opened in 2007 over 14 years ago. She is a Fellow of the British College of Aesthetic Medicine, striving for best standards in Aesthetics and Cosmetic Dermatology. The clinic in Plymouth is in spacious, modern premises with ample free parking around. Travelling is easy with a 4 minute access from the A38 Manadon roundabout, taking signposts to Mutley Plain (the opposite side to the Derriford turn-off). This makes it a 45 minute journey from Exeter and Bodmin. Prices are affordable and compare favourably with any other facilities. You will find useful information on the website on each treatment. WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY World Suicide Prevention Day is taking place on Friday 10th September 2021.
S
uicide is a terrible waste of human potential. It is a tragedy that a person cannot see his or her own worth as a person. It is heart-breaking that someone is unable to see their value to humanity.
Every day, in Britain, a man takes his own life every two hours. For women it’s every six hours. And although these numbers have gone down slightly in recent years, they are still far too high. It seems likely that, following the pandemic and the inevitable changes that will follow it, they will only get higher. In every war since Vietnam, the death toll from suicide has exceeded the death toll from violence in the conflict. Throughout the world today, in spite of the dreadful conflicts which we see on the news screens every night, men under 50 are more likely to die from suicide than from violent action or warfare. In University counselling services across the UK, two thirds of the clients are women. And yet we have seen that men are in most danger of suicide. Trying to find an identity is very tough in the 21st century. Women are leaving behind a subservient, “less than”, place in society and are moving on to something different.
It can be a struggle to work out who they are going to be, once the old models of mother and housewife are put to one side. On the other hand, men find themselves with an old-fashioned view of a tough guy who is in charge, which is completely out of date in modern society. As a psychotherapist, I am used to seeing despair, and listening to people who struggle to see their own value and don’t want to experience another day. In spite of this, they find the courage to go on and to make a better life for themselves. It seems as if, once people have made the decision to talk to someone, they will find a way to go on and even to build a life that they can enjoy. The challenge is to start talking. Veterans groups can be a real help in this area. They enable men who have absorbed a traditional “man up and be a man” philosophy to talk to people like themselves. Men like this are not very likely to see a counsellor or psychotherapist. Many people, especially young people under 30, seem to communicate endlessly, facilitated by their ever-present phones. However, face-to-face communication with a physical human being is what we have evolved to need. Digital communication
has been around for less than human lifetime, whereas we have evolved as people with other people around us, in small connected groups, over hundreds of thousands of years. In a strange way, it may be that the move towards online video counselling, which now makes up all my practice, may in fact be more accessible to younger people than traditional face-to-face work. Counsellors and psychotherapists are trained to listen quietly and intently, without breaking in with their own views or issues. Therapy is a safe space to talk, however hard it might be for you. Free of the constant bombardment of digital information, the space to just talk is calming and healing. It enables you to gain a real sense of what is going on for you when you can speak it out clearly and with help from an expert to unravel your thought processes. Good talking takes good listening. If you are in trouble and you need to talk, talk to someone, even if you can’t see the way out. Call the Samaritans, talk to that one best friend, or ask to talk to a therapist. If you feel someone you know is in despair then give him or her the space to talk. Don’t try to fix anything, just listen with all your heart and soul. This is what does the trick. Any good therapist will tell you, that when all else fails you just shut up and listen. Good listening helps everyone to feel better about themselves, and can sometimes save a life. LAST-MINUTE LOCAL GETAWAYS & DAYS OUT Summer is almost over which means now is the perfect time to plan some last-minute fun days out & getaways! We can’t think of a better part of the country to explore than the beautiful South West.
S
pending some quality time with family and loved ones doesn’t have to cost the earth. Staying in the UK and exploring all that we have to offer is already cheaper than going abroad and the Covid guidelines are making abroad holidays all the more difficult to go on which means staycations have boomed. A lot of holiday homes and hotels are already booked up until 2022, a record for the accommodation industry but it has meant that a lot of people have missed out on them this summer.
It is always a good idea to keep checking back on your favourite accommodation websites as they are constantly adding more listings by the day. Plymouth is located in one of the best parts of the UK, with Dartmoor to the North, Salcombe & the South Hams to the East and Cornwall to the West. It is the ideal base to set off on an adventure from, even if just for the day!
River Dart Country Park Nestled in the trees, located just off the A38 past Buckfastleigh, lies the River Dart Country Park. A haven for adventure enthusiasts, thrill seekers and keen campers. Voted one of the best visitor attractions in Devon, River Dart Country park is set in 90 acres of parkland within the Dartmoor National Park and offers a

whole host of activities for the whole family to enjoy. Some of their family-friendly activities include an agility trail, bike trail, mini zip wire, obstacle course, toddlers beach & playground and a pirate ship! They also have a ‘Dare Devils’ section which includes canoeing, high ropes course, kayaking, mega zip wire, climbing and caving! Their climbing and caving activities are brand new for 2021.
Backpack Camping in Dartmoor
As if it couldn’t get any better, they also offer onsite camping for all customers! They provide electric and non-electric pitches with modern and well-equipped amenity blocks complete with free hot water and showers. There are covered washing up areas, water and rubbish points, laundry rooms, Wi-Fi areas as well as an onsite tennis court! To find out more information or to book your next getaway, head to www.riverdart.co.uk
• Check the Dartmoor camping map before setting off as some places are restricted from wild camping • Only stay a maximum of 1 or 2 nights • Must be part of a hike • Small tents only • No large groups • Make sure you pitch up far away from any public footpaths and attractions • No open fires or BBQ’s • Leave nothing behind • Avoid disturbing wildlife and don’t pollute streams or rivers
To really explore Dartmoor, there is no better way to do it than to hike all day and then wild camp under the stars all night. Camping in Dartmoor is actually encouraged; however, they have some rules you will need to stick to.
Health & Leisure Wild camping is a very basic overnight stay so if you are wanting a few more luxuries and facilities, then we’d recommend you use one of the many campsites on Dartmoor instead! However, with limited signal, light pollution and noise pollution, there is no better place to truly escape into the wilderness than our next-door neighbour, Dartmoor National Park.
Plymouth Boat Trips No car? Fear not for we have Plymouth Boat Trips to help you out! Set sail from one of their ports located on the Barbican or the Royal William Yard and enjoy a gentle cruise over to Mount Edgcumbe Country Park or Cawsand Bay. Mount Edgcumbe Country Park offers gorgeous views of the coastline as you wander around the grounds of the estate. You can also step foot inside the grade II listed house and explore the history for only £8 for adults and £4 for children! Cawsand Bay is a calm, sheltered bay that overlooks the Plymouth Sound. There are only a handful of pubs and restaurants within Cawsand including The Bay, Bar and Restaurant which is perfectly located opposite the beach with endless views of the coastline. The sheltered bay offers a great place to learn how to paddleboard with Cawsand Water Sports providing paddleboard & kayak hire!
Dartmoor Zoo

From tigers and cheetahs to snakes and stick insects, there is bound to be something for the whole family to enjoy! Along with 150+ animals to admire, there are also wonderful views of Dartmoor National Park, open-fronted cat enclosures for perfect viewing, a gift shop and a selection of restaurants and cafes.

South West Coast Path If you fancy a picturesque walk, we are blessed to be located along the South West Coast Path, England’s longest waymarked footpath stretching for 630 miles. This means you can pick up the path at any point along the coast and carry on walking until you’re ready to turn back around or make a loop. Explore more of the coast path along Plymouth’s seafront or, take the hour and a half drive down to the quaint seaside town of Fowey and explore the traditional Cornish streets and shops. Fowey is located around 20 minutes from The Eden Project and 40 minutes from The Lost Gardens of Heligan which makes it a great base to explore more of what Cornwall has to offer. Due to the beautiful nature of Fowey, accommodation isn’t cheap, however, if you take a 15-minute drive out of Fowey and head to the East Crinnis Holiday Park where there is a variety of glamping and camping facilities and pitches from as little as £38 (for a non-electric grass pitch for two nights).
The elegant gardens were home to the Tremayne family for more than 400 years until the First World War where Heligan House was used as a Convalescence Hospital for Officers in 1916. Later in 1939, American troops used Heligan House as a base and the gardens were left to overgrow for years. It wasn’t until 1990 where a secret door was discovered within the bushes by Tim Smit and John Willis, a Tremayne descendant, and the sleeping beauty was re-awakened. It has now become Europe’s largest garden restoration project! To explore a genuine secret garden, head to www.heligan.com to book tickets.
The Eden Project An hour’s drive into Cornwall and you will end up inside the tropical bubble that is The Eden Project. What was a clay mine with no soil or plants has been transformed over the years into a picturesque global garden, fit for a great family day out! Immerse yourself in the world’s largest indoor rainforest and travel through differing terrain and climates. Uncover places to play like their massive Minibeast Mansion or take the wobbly footbridge through the tree canopy. To find out more about our very own tropical rainforest in the UK, head to www.edenproject.com

Tip in the tomatoes, spinach and 100ml water and bubble until the spinach has wilted, then lower to a simmer and cook, uncovered, for 10 mins. Season to taste. TWO Make four indentations in the tomato mixture and gently crack an egg into each one. Cover with a lid or foil and cook over a gentle heat for 8-10 mins, or until the eggs are just set. Uncover, scatter with the fresh herbs and serve.

Spicy chicken & avocado wraps (Serves 2) • • • • • • • • •
1 chicken breast (approx 180g), thinly sliced generous squeeze juice 0.5 lime ½ tsp mild chilli powder 1 garlic clove, chopped 1 tsp olive oil 2 seeded wraps 1 avocado, halved and stoned 1 roasted red pepper from a jar, sliced a few sprigs coriander, chopped
ONE Mix the chicken with the lime juice, chilli powder and garlic. TWO Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan then fry the chicken for a couple of mins – it will cook very quickly so keep an eye on it. Meanwhile, warm the wraps following the pack instructions or, if you have a gas hob, heat them over the flame to slightly char them. Do not let them dry out or they are difficult to roll. THREE Squash half an avocado onto each wrap, add the peppers to the pan to warm them through then pile onto the wraps with the chicken, and sprinkle over the coriander. Roll up, cut in half and eat with your fingers.

Jackfruit bolognese with vegan parmesan (Serves 4) • • • • • • • • • • •
1 tbsp rapeseed oil 320g carrots (3 medium), finely chopped 4 celery sticks (320g), finely chopped 4 garlic cloves , finely grated 410g can jackfruit in water, drained and finely chopped 100g red lentils 3 tbsp tomato purée 4 tsp vegetable bouillon powder (check it’s vegan) 1 tbsp chopped thyme 325g wholemeal spaghetti chopped parsley , to serve (optional)
For the vegan parmesan • 40g cashews • 4 tsp nutritional yeast • 1 tsp garlic granules
ONE Heat the oil in a large non-stick pan and fry the carrots, celery and garlic for 10 mins, stirring every now and then. TWO Meanwhile, make the vegan parmesan. Tip the cashews, nutritional yeast and garlic granules into a food processor and blitz to fine crumbs. Add a little salt, if needed, and set aside. THREE Tip the jackfruit into the veg mix with the lentils, 700ml water, the tomato purée, bouillon powder and thyme, then cover and cook for 25 mins. Add a little more water if needed – it should be pulpy. FOUR Meanwhile cook half the spaghetti, following pack instructions, until al dente. If following the Healthy Diet Plan toss with half the sauce, divide between two bowls and sprinkle with half of the vegan parmesan and parsley, if using. The sauce will keep, covered, in the fridge for up to 3 days, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

RECYCLE WEEK 2021 20th - 26th September ‘It’s the one week of the year where retailers, brands, waste management companies, trade associations, governments and the media come together to achieve one goal: to galvanise the public into recycling more of the right things, more often’ – www.wrap.org.uk This year’s theme: Step it up this Recycle Week.
S
omething that we can all do to help the current state of the environment is by correctly recycling our waste. Encouraging people to recycle was the first step, now we need to step up our recycling habits to ensure we are throwing the right things in the right bins.
The core reason why we recycle materials is to reduce the need to grow, harvest or extract new materials from the Earth. Avoiding the harmful disruption to our planet means that fewer forests will be cut down, fewer animals will be harmed or moved and there will be less pollution of water, soil and air. The Earth only has a finite amount of resources therefore, we should be
protecting them by reusing what we already have instead of searching for untouched raw materials. Manufacturing recycled products still requires energy to do so, however, it is considerably less compared to generating brand new products from raw materials. In fact, producing recycled aluminium uses 95% less energy than making it from scratch and making recycled paper uses 40% less energy than making it from virgin wood fibres! It’s not just cardboard, plastic and aluminium that can be recycled but food waste and garden waste too! These should be recycled in separate bins and can be used to generate valuable compost for food and crop growth.
You can order your black garden waste bin from www.plymouth.gov.uk and it will be dropped off outside your house. The collection for garden waste varies as they prioritise the green and brown bins first. Unfortunately, Plymouth doesn’t offer food waste bins but that doesn’t mean you can’t still do your bit! Plymouth City Council has teamed up with www. getcomposting.com to provide us Plymouth residence with our very own composting bin at a reduced cost. Made from 100% recycled plastic, their composting bins offer a sustainable solution to food waste for as little as £22.50! Compost can take between six months to two years to reach its maturity and will resemble crumbly, dark brown soil. This is then perfect for improving vegetables and flowers and can be spread lightly over the grass to help it grow.
What can’t be recycled? What we think can be recycled is probably very different to what can be recycled. A common mindset is, the more we recycle, the better for the environment, which is all well and good until we start recycling the wrong things. Here is a list of items from www. ecoscraps.com that are commonly mistaken to be recyclable
Loose Plastic Bags • Plastic shopping bags • Plastic stretch wrap Polystyrene Foam Cups or Containers • Egg cartons • Take out containers • Drinking cups Soiled Food Items (Items that have touched food, grease or oil) • Food soiled containers • Soiled paper products Other • Broken or sharp glass • Fast-food packaging • Plastic Utensils • Most receipts The perfect item to be recycled should be sparkling clean and then it can be processed back into exactly the material it was before. There is no direct rule in how clean it should be to get recycled; they will often judge the item individually and make a decision there and then. The dirtier items will be produced into less
high-quality materials. So, when it doubt, wash it out!
Compostable Coffee Cups
A common mistake people make is misunderstanding the terms biodegradable and compostable. Biodegradable items can break down within the environment, however, the material itself may not be good for the environment. Some plastic bags are capable of biodegrading into tiny pieces within 20 years which causes more environmental concern. Compostable items are made from natural materials which can completely break down into compost rich in nutrients.
Good or Bad? A single-use item being replaced with another single-use item is sadly not a solution. Although they may advertise the cup as being ‘Compostable’ it doesn’t mean you can add this to your compost heap or put it in your garden waste bin. The ‘compostable’ coffee cup will decompose at a rate much slower than the contents of your compost which makes them unfit for compost heaps.
Please mention OM Plymouth Magazine when responding to adverts
Since they cannot be recycled, the only advantage they have over regular takeaway coffee cups is that they break down slightly faster. Therefore, the only way to get around the takeaway coffee cup debate is to buy a reusable coffee cup as they are purpose-built to not be tossed in the bin. Thankfully, none of the waste from Devon ends up in landfill sites, so what we need to be focusing on is helping our local waste centres by recycling correctly and purchasing fewer singleuse items, to begin with.

Borrow Don’t Buy announces the launch of their new Student Membership Plymouth’s own Library of Things - Borrow Don’t Buy is launching a Student Campaign to support and engage local students who are living in Plymouth. Most students are on some kind of budget and a long way from home. They are limited on the number of things they can bring with them to student accommodation and often find they need to do a lot of shopping for items they might only use a few times. For this reason, having access to a pool of items that they can borrow occasionally will not only help them save money but also save valuable resources helping them to live greener. Students will be able to join from September 1st. Students who sign up will get their first loan from the library totally free using the code ‘STUDENTFIRSTBORROW’. BDB items are already at very affordable prices, but to make them that much more accessible to students, an additional 10% discount is being offered on their loans for the first year. BDB will be attending the University of Plymouth’s freshers fair on the 21st of September, where students will be able to engage with members of the BDB team and learn more about what it means to #beaborrower. And this isn’t just good for students, supporting them to reduce their waste will benefit Plymouth’s community as it helps with working towards Plymouth’s Climate Emergency Action Plan by increasing the number of users engaged with an organisation working towards a sustainable future.
