Home the community before making the huge step and opening up the shop. They attended various markets such as; Native Makers, Union Street Party, Nudge Community and University and college fairs. They also did lots of popups in other local shops and cafes like Prime Bar Café, Vessell, Yoke, Cake Whole and Cawfee. Becca and Nieve are all so thankful and grateful to this day, for the local businesses that helped to promote Nook when they were just getting on their feet into the world of business.

Becca and Nieve - Photo by Dom Moore

Becca and Nieve, two friends, both nerdy about houseplants with an ambition to add a touch of green to every house in Plymouth. The two friends have always shared a mutual understanding for their love of houseplants and what started out as a hobby and genuine interest has turned into a full-time job that never feels like work. We caught up with Becca and Nieve to find out more about Nook Houseplants after having our own office kitted out with their gorgeous plants!

B

ecca and Nieve have been friends for 8 years after they met each other at a local gig when Becca was performing. The two found that they had a lot in common, especially their evergrowing houseplant collection and so their friendship flourished from that night. Prior to starting up Nook Houseplants, Becca worked as a mental health councillor and Nieve taught secondary school art and specialised in ceramics. Caring for the community, teaching young people and being creative still resonates very strongly in the work they do for Nook today. During the beginning of the pandemic, Becca and Nieve headed to all of the garden centres in and around Plymouth, seeing what they could find to add to their collection. Although they are both big fans of garden centres, they always found themselves disappointed with the lack of care and attention that the houseplants received. More often than not, each plant is watered the same with very little knowledge of their individual care needs. Becca and Nieve knew that they had the knowledge required to do it themselves and to ensure less plants are wasted due to lack of care. They have both always enjoyed not only collecting all kinds of plants but taking

cuttings and propagating plants in their spare time. During the first lockdown when they had a little bit of spare time, they began propagating on a larger scale and together, set up a Facebook page where they could share care tips with the online houseplant community. This Facebook page became popular, very quickly and with their new following, they decided to set up an e-commerce website. They sold every plant that they had successfully propagated and within 24 hours of launching the website, they had completely sold out.

On the 14th of April 2021, just after the third lockdown restrictions had been released, Becca and Nieve opened the doors to their brand-new shop on the Barbican. With the success of the popup shops and their online shop, they were both able to quit their full-time jobs and take Nook on with their full attention. Becca and Nieve were the first people in Plymouth to open up a Plymouth based houseplant business and they welcome others to do the same as they love seeing the high streets full of plants and plant businesses. “The response from both locals and tourists have been amazing! We never expected it to take off the way it has.” - Nieve. The two friends have been blown away by the support from other local businesses on the barbican and other houseplant shop owners, as well as their lovely customers. “When you are working with such lovely people and promoting something you are genuinely passionate about, work never quite feels like work.” - Becca

With their audience in full support of their endeavours, Becca and Nieve knew they could take this one step further and so with heaps of research into business and suppliers, they set up Nook Houseplants online. Up next on their agenda was to get a shop. Having grown up and worked on the Barbican, Becca and Nieve already had a sense of community there and they had their eye on this tiny shop within The House That Jack Built. As long as it could fit in all of their houseplants, a large shop was never something they wanted so they were chuffed to bits when they were able to set up shop in 10 Southside Street. Just prior to this, Becca and Nieve wanted to grow Nook’s presence within

Home Nook Houseplants sell a wide variety of plants, the majority are easy to care for and pet friendly. They also have a large selection of smaller plants that are perfect for gifts or new plant owners. Nook always love to offer their customers something that you can’t find in your average supermarket plant section which is why they have an ever-increasing collection of rare plant species. To go with the plants, they also offer different pots made from ceramics, concrete, seagrass and many more. Nieve and her mum handcraft ceramic pots which they sell in the shop, they are also a stockist for a local plant pot company called ‘Foxy pots’. They sell plant care products like pest control, plant food and plant spray, and they also make their own potting mix which they both use for their own plants. Collaborating with local businesses is something Becca and Nieve love doing. They sell cards from a local artist and have also kitted out a few local businesses with their plants, one, in particular, being Ocean View bar & restaurant located in The Dome. They are always there to recommend a certain plant to you or advise you against purchasing a troublesome plant if you are new to being a plant owner. The care of the plant is a top priority for them and so they like to do all that they can to ensure that the plant will be well looked after when the customer takes it home. Another thing they recommended you do is to take an image of the space you wish to put your plant so that when you come into the store, they can suggest the best plants for that particular spot in your house.

Care cards are given to each individual plant with watering instructions and sunlight preferences to ensure the best for the plant once it has left Nook’s care. Alongside these care cards, Becca and Nieve are also here for any plantbased advice and support. Google is a faceless platform whereby some of the information can be incorrect or based on opinion, whereas when you speak to Nook, they are genuine people who want to help you and your plant, even if your plant wasn’t purchased with them. Becca and Nieve pride themselves on their knowledge of plants and plant care so they are confident in giving you the best advice. If you find yourself struggling with a particular plant, you can always take it into the Nook for Becca and Nieve to have a look at and find the issue, otherwise, you can always take a photo of the plant and send it to Nook via email or their social media platforms. No matter what they chose to sell, whether it was plants, food or socks,

the forefront of what they are doing is providing the community with somebody to talk to and offer support when needed. Because purchasing a plant is a luxury, the plants act as a conversation starter whereby they can offer a friendly face and a helping hand. The recent pandemic has sparked people’s interest in houseplants because they have given people something to focus on and to care for. Along with the plants themselves, Becca and Nieve are here as a friend to talk to and listen to your stories about not just your plants, but your life too. In the future, they’d like to expand the business and offer workshops and educational classes for both children and adults. Workshops may include plant-based gifts, wreath making and ceramics. In order to do this, they will need to expand the team to one other person to help man the shop and take care of the plants. They would like to continue to be a part of the community and get involved in charities and collaborations with other local businesses. Becca and Nieve have created a successful business as a result of the pandemic and are excited to continue along their path to sprucing up the homes of Plymouth with gorgeous green foliage and offering a friendly face to have a chat to on The Barbican.

OUR FAVOURITE

FESTIVE

RECIPE IDEAS The countdown to Christmas is finally here and we have found the best festive bakes to enjoy infront of a roaring fire. From ultimate gingerbread to a yule log.

Easy mince pies (Serves 18) • • • • • •

225g cold butter, diced 350g plain flour 100g golden caster sugar 280g mincemeat 1 small egg, beaten icing sugar, to dust

ONE To make the pastry, rub the butter into the flour, then mix in the golden caster sugar and a pinch of salt. Combine the pastry into a ball – don’t add liquid – and knead it briefly. The dough will be fairly firm, like shortbread dough. You can use the dough immediately, or chill for later. TWO Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Line 18 holes of two 12-hole patty tins, by pressing small walnut-sized balls of pastry into each hole. Spoon the mincemeat into the pies. Take slightly smaller balls of pastry than before and pat them out between your hands to make round lids, big enough to cover the pies. THREE Top the pies with their lids, pressing the edges gently together to seal – you don’t need to seal them with milk or egg as they will stick on their own. Will keep frozen for up to one month. FOUR Brush the tops of the pies with the beaten egg. Bake for 20 mins until golden. Leave to cool in the tin for 5 mins, and then remove to a wire rack. To serve, lightly dust with the icing sugar.

Ultimate easy gingerbread • • • • • • • •

100g salted butter 3 tbsp golden syrup 100g dark muscovado sugar ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 tbsp ground ginger 1 tsp ground cinnamon 225g plain flour 50g icing sugar

ONE Heat the butter, syrup and sugar together in a small pan until melted, stirring occasionally. Set aside to cool slightly. Mix together the bicarb, ginger, cinnamon and flour in a large bowl. Pour in the buttery syrup mixture and stir to combine, then use your hands to bring together to form a dough. The dough will be soft at this point, but it’ll firm up in the fridge. TWO Put the dough on a sheet of baking parchment, shape into a rectangle, and lay another sheet of parchment on top of it. Roll the dough out to a thickness of ½cm. Transfer to a baking sheet to keep it flat, leaving the parchment in place, then chill in the fridge for 1 hr. THREE Heat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5 and line a large baking sheet with more baking parchment. Remove the dough from the fridge and cut out shapes using a cookie cutter. We also made some with smaller stars cut out a whole to thread ribbon through and hang from a Christmas tree. Place the shapes, spread apart, on the lined baking sheet, and bake for 10-12 mins. Leave to cool completely on the baking sheet. FOUR Decorate the cooled biscuits with the icing using a piping bag with a thin nozzle. Mix the icing sugar with 1-2 tbsp water – you want to create a consistency that’s thick and pipeable and not too thin or it will run.

• 200ml double cream • ½ tsp vanilla extract • 50g icing sugar, sifted, plus extra to serve ONE Heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Line a 22 x 32cm swiss roll tin (if it’s 20 x 30cm that’s still fine) with baking parchment. Sift the flour and cocoa powder together into a bowl and set aside. TWO Crack the eggs into another bowl and tip in the sugar. Use an electric whisk or the whisk attachment to beat the eggs and sugar together for 5 mins until pale and very thick. Use a spoon or spatula to gently fold in the flour mixture until completely incorporated and everything’s the same colour with no streaks. THREE Gently scrape the mix into the tin and spread to the corners. Bake for 9-10 mins until puffed up and springy to touch. While the cake is baking, get another piece of parchment a little larger than the tin and scatter it with sugar. When the sponge is cooked, use oven gloves to carefully invert it onto the sugar-coated paper. Lift off the tin and peel away the top layer of parchment. Score a line 2cm from one of the shorter edges, and then use the parchment to roll the sponge into a spiral with the parchment running through it. Leave the rolled sponge to cool completely. FOUR While the cake is cooling, make the filling by whisking all the ingredients together until the cream stiffens. Unroll the sponge and spread over the filling, leaving the scored edge clear. Starting from the scored edge, use the parchment to roll the sponge up around the filling. Lift onto a board or serving platter and dust with icing sugar. Can be served straight away or chilled for up to 24 hrs. Serve in slices.

Health & Leisure Each of us can begin to make that journey to zero carbon with forwardthinking ideas and having the courage to do what Tim has done by putting a stake in the ground and hoping the rest of the industry follows suit. Featuring the latest kit, including treadmills, bike machines, cross trainers, free weights, functional space and fixed resistance equipment, MDL Fitness has all you need for an exhilarating workout with the added bonus of an undisrupted view of the Plymouth Sound.

Plymouth is seeing a vast number of changes over the recent years to create a city that is modern, forward-thinking and sustainable. With the global mission to cut down our carbon footprint, we are naturally taking more sustainable choices for a better future. MDL Fitness is part of that change by offering not only a modern gym with a stunning sea vista, an eco-friendly concept whereby human energy is converted into electricity.

O

n the 1st of September 2021, MDL Fitness opened its doors for the first time, so after a few months of finding their feet, we spoke to Tim Mayer, Director of Sales and Marketing to find out what it’s all about.

MDL Fitness is part of a larger corporation called MDL Marinas who own and operate 18 Marinas across the UK and 1 in Spain. MDL Marinas owns Queen Anne’s Battery in Plymouth which is where you will find MDL Fitness. Tim Mayer’s vision of the future is clear, he wants to make people’s lives better which starts by protecting what we all live on; Earth. Tim began working in the Health and Fitness market in 2007, starting at a single site level and by 2019, became a national manager, looking after the commercial activity and digital transformation of over 200 locations. In 2017, Tim met Roger Eldergill from SA Green Fitness, a sustainable health and fitness company offering green solutions. Tim was looking into the idea of portable/temporary gyms that could be sustainable and dropped into low-income areas but plans were only just evolving. He made the move over to the Marina industry by the end of 2019 with exciting plans whereby sustainability and protecting the marine environment was at the forefront. In 2020, covid-19 fundamentally shifted the UK fitness industry giving an opportunity to those in a position to enter the market. The pandemic made everybody more inclined to take better care of their health which resulted in an influx of gym

22 December 2021

memberships. Surprisingly, in the UK, 90% of the population are not gym members therefore, keen to make the jump, he pitched his idea to the MDL board and was chuffed when the initial nod to explore the MDL fitness concept had the goahead. Soon after, he contacted Roger again and collectively, they pulled together the first design and it has since grown from there. MDL are very fortunate to be managing 19 beautiful locations where they each deserve and need special consideration if we are to enjoy them in years to come. Whilst they are aware that virtually all the activities of the company, and that of their customers and tenants, have some impact on the environment, MDL is dedicated to environmental improvement. They are working with their berth holders, on-site businesses and supply chain in a bid to protect the natural beauty of the marina surroundings and the marine ecosystem, for the enjoyment of all. MDL Fitness is just one of those brilliant, forward-thinking ideas to help the planet. Sustainable products and business sustainability is increasing dramatically in demand, particularly among millennials and the younger generation. Tim Mayer states, ‘One recent report revealed that certain categories of products with sustainability claims showed twice the growth of their traditional counterparts. In one recent survey, 65% said they want to buy purpose-driven brands that advocate sustainability, yet only about 26% actually do so. That is a challenge for all of us.’

Call OM Plymouth Magazine 01752 691007

The environmental success of the gym comes down to the gym members and their workouts on SportsArt Eco-Powr equipment. By plugging in their new Eco-Powr treadmills, cross trainers and bicycles into a standard outlet, MDL Fitness will be able to send AC power generated by gym members back through the gym’s power grid to offset its energy consumption and reduce its carbon footprint. By working out on an Eco-Powr treadmill for an hour, twice a week for a year, it’s possible to create a CO2 emission offset equivalent to 62 lbs of coal burned, 138 miles driven in a car or 7,197 smartphones charged! OM Plymouth Magazine - “With 18 marinas in the UK, why have you chosen Plymouth to house MDL Fitness?” Tim Mayer – “Plymouth is a very green city with ambitious plans, and Plymouth Sound is one of the world’s most important and visually stunning natural harbours. It has multiple designations for protected habitats and supports over 1,000 species of fish and other marine animal life. It is also the location where we launched the UK’s first-ever Green Tech Boat Show!”

Sales and Marketing Director Tim Mayer

Health & Leisure The first few months have been very successful for MDL Fitness. Their members are truly in love with the state-ofthe-art gym and its view over the ocean. This aspect offers one of, if not the best views to work out from on the planet. To be able to work out and watch the boats go by, in itself, is very special. It also gives the members a sense of fulfilment knowing they are helping to protect the environment whilst taking care of their own bodies. Not only are their cardio machines sustainable, there are other elements to the gym that are also environmentally friendly. The flooring has been made from recycled tyres, the ventilation system has heat recovery making it more energyefficient and the gym furniture comes from a sustainable source. The UK’s climate mission is ambitious, and MDL are in full support of it as they continue their journey to becoming the UK’s most sustainable marina group. They have already made some improvements to their marinas by installing 1,000 solar panels on 5 of their marina buildings, they also have a 100% zero waste to landfill policy, they are helping to replenish the Solent’s oyster population and converting their existing petrol/diesel workboats to fully electric or hybrid propulsion. They have also just announced that they will be the first UK marina group to offer an electric boat charging solution across their marinas! Whether you’re new to the gym or fancy a change from your own gym, MDL Fitness is there for everyone to enjoy, no matter your experience. They have a fitness manager and qualified personal trainers on hand to give you any advice or to motivate you in one of

their group cycling classes. Users of the gym will be able to track their progress and energy production against local and global leader boards through a specialist wellness App called ‘WATA App’. SportsArt is the only manufacturer offering fitness machines that recover energy expended by the user. Using this equipment gives MDL a green competitive advantage over other suppliers and they plan to extend this project beyond Plymouth by creating further MDL Fitness sites using the SportsArt Eco-Powr equipment in 2022. Tim wishes that all of the big operators move away from the comfortable brands we all know and start talking to the change-makers such as SA Green Fitness more seriously. He has noticed an unhealthy pattern whereby the independent businesses are more likely to make the change while big operators choose to ignore the option of becoming more sustainable. MDL Fitness is all about making fitness sustainable and as straightforward as

possible. They want to be able to help people appreciate new environments they may not have been lucky enough to experience before and ensure they’re open to people, no matter their personal circumstances. There is a membership option to suit everyone! You can pay for a day, a month or a year with prices from as little as 69p per day. If you want to try the gym for yourself, please go to www.mdlfitness. co.uk click on ‘Day Pass’ and add the coupon FREEDAYPASS. SHOP LOCAL: STOCKING FILLERS

T

here is no better feeling than waking up on Christmas morning to a stocking full of gifts! But how many of those gifts are usually sourced locally? It is with the help of Plymouth’s brilliant local businesses that we can change this and start thinking local. Independent businesses have their place in our economy and play a very important role. Firstly, if we didn’t support them, our high street would be looking very bare, and secondly, they are actually better for the economy of your community. It has been proven that if you spend as little as £10 with your local independent shop, up to £50 goes back into the local community.

AsTec Models

T

he makers of Nimrif RC would like to bring you one step further into the remote-controlled universe.

AsTec Models specialise in all things RC trucks. These trucks don’t just go forwards and backwards, these are fully functioning vehicles with life-like sounding engines, lights, indicators, wiper blades and operating windows and doors. There is also a camera on the driver that when paired with a VR headset can put you in the driver’s seat. AsTec models are a supplier of Tamiya Trucks. Accessories, speed controllers, sound units and more.

AsTec Models Every Trucker’s Dream

I personally prefer to see unique shops on the high street where I don’t quite know what to expect when I walk in, rather than the chains that you see everywhere. You also tend to find items that are rare or exclusive to that particular shop which can make the experience even more special. In Plymouth, we have an abundance of small, independent shops to explore this Christmas such as Astec Models in Plympton, offering remote control trucks as well as Kaya Gallery on The Barbican offering a whole host of local artwork. We hope you have a very merry shopping experience this year and remember to stay safe and think local!

DIY FESTIVE DECORATIONS Step 2:

Test with a thermometer to make sure wax is between 40° - 46° degrees Celsius and carefully pour the melted coconut wax into your jar. Pour the jar 80% full, let cool to semi-solid, centre the wick and complete final pour. This is when you can add your festive decorations with a pair of tweezers and gentle place them into the candle.

spacing any time. That’s the best part – you get easy do-overs! Place in the baubles by inserting the wire into the holes at the top of the baubles and then wrap the wire around the wreath.

Step 3:

Trim flower stems or thistle to 4” tucking them in at varying widths to stagger, again, in the same direction as existing stems. Insert them until almost flush. Method from Julie Blanner.

Step 3:

Coconut Wax Candles

You will need: • A Clean Pot • Fragrance oils • Coconut candle wax • Festive decorations such as sprigs of Christmas tree, orange, cinnamon sticks • Candle wicks & Wick holders • Clean jars (suitable heat proof jars) • Double sided tape or wick stickums • A butter knife • Sharp scissors • Long spout pouring jug • Thermometer • Isopropyl alcohol for the clean-up

The wax will begin hardening right away, so do not move or adjust your candle until it has set solid. Leave to sit for at least three hours before moving. I find it best to trim the wick 5 to 6 hours later to avoid the wick disturbing the top of the candle. Trim the wick, using sharp scissors. Generally, you should trim the wick 1 - 1.5cm above the level of your wax. Make sure you allow 3 days for the candle fragrances to cure before burning. Otherwise, the full spectrum of fragrance notes will not be appreciated. Method from New Zealand Candle Supplies.

Step 1:

Step 1:

Melt the wax slowly at a low heat, stir to help it melt. Heat range of 65° - 70° degrees Celsius. Set up your making area, lay down clean newspaper to catch any spills. Ensure all jars are ready with centered wicks, placed on top of the paper.

You will need:

When the wax has melted, test with a thermometer to make sure wax is between 48° - 52° degrees Celsius and add your fragrance. If the wax is too hot it will burn off the fragrance, leaving you with a subtle scent, rather than a candle with an amazing scent throw. Add fragrance oils, between 8-10% of total wax weight or essential oils, I recommend 5% for essential oils.

Trim stems of greenery leaving 1-2”of stem to insert into the wreath. For eucalyptus, 6-8” overall.

28 December 2021

You will need: • Air-dry clay • Yarn or twine • Fishing line or clear sewing thread • Wax paper • Toothpick • Small branch • Rolling pin • X-acto knife, or small paring knife • Scissors • Stars template, or small star cookie cutter (1-2 inches)

Stick the wicks to the bottom of the jar, make sure they are centered. A very small amount of double-sided tape works well. Ensure the tape is not larger than the wick as this may cause a fire risk. Press down with a butter knife to ensure good adhesion.

Mix well to ensure fragrance goes through all the wax.

On a layer of wax paper, roll clay 1/8” to 1/4” thick. Cut out the star templates, lay them on the clay, printed side up, then cut around the stars with a knife. Remove excess clay. Repeat until you’ve cut out at least 20 stars.

Step 2:

Carefully remove the clay stars from the wax paper, and poke a hole for hanging with a toothpick. Set the stars aside to dry on a piece of wax paper. Drying time will be at least 24 hours.

Step 3:

After the stars have dried, tie lengths of thread or string to them. Tie a piece of yarn or twine to either end of the branch to hang it up, then tie the stars to it at varying heights. Adjust the thread lengths, and trim excess thread. Hang up your new decoration, and enjoy the Christmas holidays! Method by DIY in PDX

HAVE YOURSELF A SUSTAINABLE LITTLE CHRISTMAS With Christmas in close proximity, it is all too easy to forget the positive eco-friendly advances we have made and switch to panic buying mode. It is time to slow down the Christmas shopping experience and think greener.

I

think we can all agree that when it comes to Christmas, the excitement and the pressure gets to us all and a little bit of panic buying comes in to play. The pressure built up to ensure Christmas goes smoothly and nobody gets disappointed is getting bigger and bigger each year. I personally think that if we put less pressure on ourselves during this period, we would have more time to enjoy it. Christmas was never about the gifts and the money; it was always about spreading love and joy to all and spending the holiday with friends and family. The amount of waste that comes after the Christmas period is largely fuelled by the sheer panic and excitement from shops and social media to make it the ‘best Christmas ever’. The more the merrier is the general thought process and who can blame us for thinking this way with the growing pressures of social media. We are here to prove that you don’t need to miss out when it comes to making your Christmas more sustainable. In some areas, you can even save money by doing a bit of DIY! Eco-friendly products tend to cost more than un-sustainable, plastic items, however, they will last a lot longer which means you are saving yourself money in the long term. Minimising your carbon footprint by sourcing products locally is the first step. We have an editorial in this issue all about how to spend locally in Plymouth this Christmas. Although wrapping paper has got the word ‘paper’ in it, most wrapping paper is not recyclable as it contains foil, glitter or plastic. Brown paper packaging tied up with string is the way forward! Actually, I

32 December 2021

think it looks a lot prettier and you can add your own personalised touch to it with some foliage, dried orange, and maybe even a stamp using eco-friendly vegetable ink! If you want some more colour to your packages, we recommend www.re-wrapped.co.uk, they have a wide range of Christmassy designs all made from vegetable ink! When Christmas shopping- remember to take your bags for life with you to avoid having to take any unnecessary plastic bags home with you. Christmas is the time for all things sparkly; glitter, sequins, tinsel, baubles, fairy lights and everything in-between. Unfortunately, all of those lovely sparkly items are made from plastic and are nonrecyclable and often get washed down the sink and end up in our oceans. On a positive note, eco-friendly glitter exists! Try to refrain from using tinsel and make your own paper chains or homemade garlands that can have longer-lasting properties and are less harmful to the environment. Baubles should be a family heirloom and stored with care so that they can come out of hiding each year and look spectacular. If you are in need of an extra bauble or two, avoid ones with glitter or that are made from plastic. Head to the high-end stores that offer quality baubles that are less likely to break over the years. Or, make your own Christmas decorations! Have a forage in your local woodland and pick some beautiful pinecones to hang on the tree. And if you are feeling peckish, make some Christmas biscuits, punch a hole through them, tie with string and you’ve got an adorable decoration that won’t go to waste!

Call OM Plymouth Magazine 01752 691007

By now, you may have planned your Christmas card recipient list but before you buy the cards, give them a little something extra this year. www. earthbits.com are a UK based company that produce all sorts of eco-friendly products as well as Christmas cards! The unique thing about these cards is that when you are ready to throw them away, you can take them out of the bin and in your back garden as these cards have seeds in! By buying these cards, you are essentially giving them a card and a gift that keeps on giving! Most Christmas trees are green, but not all Christmas trees are green for the planet. When it comes to buying your Christmas tree this year, make sure you are sourcing it as local as possible. And when January comes, make sure you contact www.recycledevon.org/recycleyour-christmas-trees as they can collect your tree and recycle it! With all of these sustainable Christmas ideas, we hope this has inspired you to think outside the box and adopt an eco-friendly Christmas this year without compromising out on a thing!

Does your trust or family arrangement need to be registered with HMRC?

M

any family arrangements on how property is held are being caught by HMRC’s registration requirements. If you are a trustee, beneficiary, hold property for someone else, or benefit from property held by another person, you may need to register with HMRC under the new online Trust Registration Service (TRS). HMRC has extended their requirements for all trusts in existence on or after 6 October 2020 to register, even if they do not have a UK tax liability. There are some exceptions which are detailed in the Government guidance. Importantly for most families, this now includes a requirement to register Declarations of Trust where the legal owners and beneficiaries differ. For example, you may hold a property under a Declaration of Trust where someone else has an interest or benefit. Or you may have another type of arrangement where someone holds property, money or other assets for the benefit of another person.

Michelle Crump

There are also obligations for the upkeep of records and information about the trust on the TRS. This is a complex area and the deadlines depend on the type of trust and whether there is any tax liability. We recommend you do not delay in looking into this as there may be financial penalties involved.

Next Steps

We can also advise separately on the administration, creation or termination of a trust if you would like to explore planning options for you and your family. For more information please contact Michelle Crump on 01752 827922 or by email on mc@wysolicitors.co.uk.

If you are a trustee or beneficiary or involved in an arrangement where property or other assets are held by a person but someone else has the benefit, please get in touch and we can consider this further for you.
