FROM THE EDITOR

Autumn is vastly approaching and I just want to remind you of what’s to come over the next few months to get you excited; nature’s colour pallet of the mustard yellows and aubergine purples of fallen leaves, crisping under your shoes. Cosying up on the sofa with a cup of tea watching the new series of your favourite TV show, the satisfying feeling when it’s starting to darken outside your window and you have your warm light lamps on. Yes, you’d be absolutely right in thinking Autumn is my favourite season.

This month I’ve put together some fantastic reads from incorporating some organic produce into your homes to meeting the members at Network Plymouth. Pop the kettle on as there are 23 members to meet and learn about what they can offer. Trevi’s Warrior Women Walk is back for another year and extends an invitation to women to get together and show support to those affected by domestic violence and abuse!

Bringing something new to the magazine this month in honour of World Gratitude Day, I’ve created a gratitude page to get you in the spirit! Also, there are local Day Trips by Train to try and it’s Roald Dahl Day this month - I’ve included some books to read to bring back some nostalgia.

Thank you to Hub Plymouth for their amazing £75 competition prize (pg 31) voucher for one lucky winner!

As always, thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy all this issue brings!

Amidst a growing tide, the Organic September movement champions awareness and education as it advocates for the shift towards organic lifestyles. Beyond personal health benefits, the movement highlights its impact on agriculture and the environment. This domino effect begins with individuals embracing incremental changes that collectively catalyze substantial global transformation. By choosing organic, we not only nurture our own well-being but also inspire farmers to adopt sustainable practices that ripple through ecosystems. Every mindful decision we make, from our dinner plates to our daily products, weaves into the larger fabric of a greener future. In unity, we kindle a movement that illuminates the profound interconnectedness of our choices and propels us towards a more vibrant future.

organic september

The convenience of supermarkets is undeniable, but it’s worth considering the subtle control it has over our dietary choices. Though we can acknowledge their practicality, it can be disheartening to see the scarcity of diverse fruits and vegetables, particularly seasonal produce and everything is often cloaked in plastic wrappings. The issue deepens when we examine the substantial food waste and the unfortunate marginalisation of produce deemed less than picture-perfect. There is the hopeful glimmer of the “wonky veg” ranges in select supermarkets, but the journey towards a sustainable, diverse supermarket experience is far from complete. Paying more for organic produce can deter people from making the switch but are we just used to supermarkets dominating our food buying habits with cheaper quality food which has a knock-on effect on the planet and we’re none the wiser to what’s in our food?

I am not saying it’s time to completely boycott supermarkets, throw everything out and replace with 100% sustainable, organic, vegan and cruelty-free - that’s pretty intimating and just not reality. The aim this month; is to give you something to think about, take away and perhaps give you some ideas to make those small changes.

Grow Your own

The best way to ensure you know how your produce has been grown is by growing it! In last month’s issue (August OM171) I lovingly researched and put together ways you can grow your own patch, garden or no garden and provided some tips, tricks and fruit and veg to try growing. You then have the freedom to grow fruits, vegetables and herbs you’d like to have in your diet. If you have the space, you could even get yourself some chickens for some fresh eggs.

MArKETS & FArMS

The Plymouth Market is brilliant for organic and local produce with the offering of meats and fish as well as the vibrant and abundant fruit and vegetable stall, Joe Browns. Buy with confidence knowing the produce on offer is seasonal, local and fresh and you can select how much you want to buy reducing waste.

Call me crazy, but I enjoy wandering into Farm Shops and seeing the

variety of vegetables, bread, milk, jams, cheeses and so on. The ones I highly recommend are Countryman’s Choice Farm Shop, Ivybridge and Ben’s Farm Shop, Yealmpton. It feels like a form of self-care weaving through the abundant shelves, marvelling and discovering all the local and organic produce.

orGAnIC BoXES

To make life that little bit more easier you can opt for organic fruit and vegetable boxes to be delivered straight to your front door. Their popularity is on the rise and it’s understandable with the comfort of knowing your food is organic, reduced unnecessary packaging and it’s locally grown with fair pay to the farmers.

THE DIrTY DoZEn

The foundation of The Dirty Dozen originates from the Pesticide Action Network UK (PAN) examination in September 2021 of the yearly reports (2018, 2019, and 2020), produced by the UK Government’s Expert Committee on Pesticide Residues in Food (PRiF). Through comprehensive analysis and consolidation of three years’ worth of data, they’ve provided consumers with a more transparent understanding of which types of UK produce are more prone to contain elevated levels of pesticide residues.

Pesticides are poisons that are sprayed on the produce to kill off any living organisms. Pesticides are made up of thousands of different active substances to kill plants, insects, mould and fungi. Sadly, these are not just sprayed once, crops are sprayed multiple times during the growing season. For example, as many as 20 different chemicals can be applied to wheat alone!

There’s a mass amount of information about what pesticides can do to our health, some linked to increasing risks of Parkinson’s disease, and several types of cancer and there is a concern around expecting mothers where the chemicals can affect brain development and cause other disorders and disabilities. The list truly does go on and it’s extremely eye-opening.

So let’s make some small changes to our shopping habits and switch out any of these dirty dozen and opt for the organic alternative;

% of samples with multiple pesticide residues - otherwise known as the ‘cocktail effect’

Grapefruit

Soft Citrus (eg mandarins, satsumas)

Strawberries

Oranges

Raisins and Sultanas

Herbs

Pre-packed Salad

Grapes

Lemons

Pears

Peaches and Nectarines

Spinach

Washing and peeling the fruit and veg can possibly reduce the level of pesticides on the outside but they are absorbed into the produce itself. You can read more information about this on pan-uk.org

IT’S BETTEr For THE plAnET

Organic farming champions environmental respect, enhancing soil, water, and air health while leading sustainability efforts. If all of Europe’s farmland embraced organic principles, agricultural emissions could plummet by 40-50% by 2050, feeding a growing population well. Organic farms prioritize animals’ good lives, offering high welfare standards. They create wildlife havens, with 50% more life on average and a 75% boost in wild bees. Pesticide use is limited, and organic practices foster ecosystems that control pests. Cleaner waterways and safer food emerge due to organic farming’s standards. Choosing organic supports health, planet, and animals while cultivating a resilient farming future.

Time for a bit of nostalgia or encouragement for the younger generations to open up into the world of Roald Dahl’s incredible storytelling.

Roald Dahl Story Day is celebrated annually on 13th September which is actually Dahl’s birthday. Coincidence? I think not! Acknowledged by schools, libraries, book shops and community groups across the world honour the day by commemorating his work, life and legacy as one of the world’s muchloved authors.

Let’s just get a quick reminder of the great man himself. Did you know that Dahl wrote 49 books in total and 21 of those were aimed at children, which I’m sure most adults still cherish those stories. The first-ever book he wrote was the classic story of ‘Gremlins’ which was made into a feature film in the ’80s (in my opinion, a classic!). Sadly Dahl passed away in 1990 aged 74 but not before he created 500 new words like Oompa-Loompas, scrumdiddlyumptious, snozzcumbers, and frobscottle. So let’s celebrate this marvellous day by getting involved in Roald Dahl-themed activities and even help raise some money for Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity. The charity provides specialist nurses and support for seriously ill children living with complex, lifelong conditions.

FOR THE ADULTS

The Complete Short Series: Volume One

Just as it says on the tin, this book contains all 27 of Dahl’s short stories that were written between 1944 and 1953. Prepare to enter the sinister and dark imagination of Roald Dahl with his classic tales such as ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’, ‘The Sound Machine’ and ‘Man of The South.’With a rating of 4.5 stars, it’s a great option if you’ve never delved into the world of Dahl as an adult. Volume Two is the complete collection of all short stories written between 1954 - 1988.

My Uncle Oswald

The book follows the mischievous and unscrupulous character, Uncle Oswald, and his clever scheme to collect and sell semen from famous men with the help of Yasmin Howcomely. They travel the world, engaging in humorous and risqué encounters with historical figures like Sigmund Freud and Pablo Picasso. The novel satirizes human desires, sexuality, and the pursuit of financial gain, departing from Dahl’s more well-known children’s literature.

FOR THE KIDS

George’s Marvellous Medicine

A young boy named George Kranky concocts a special medicine to

deal with his mean grandmother, Grandma Kranky. Using household items and barn ingredients, George creates a magical potion with unexpected effects. When Grandma Kranky takes the medicine, it leads to wild and hilarious consequences, showcasing Dahl’s dark humor and clever storytelling. The book explores themes of mischief, empowerment, and the power of imagination, captivating young readers with its whimsical and fantastical journey.

Esio Trot

Mr. Hoppy, an elderly man secretly in love with his neighbor, Mrs. Silver. To win her affection and make her happy, Mr. Hoppy concocts a clever plan. He pretends to have a magical spell called the “Esio Trot,” that will make her pet tortoise, Alfie, grow faster. In reality, the spell is just the word “tortoise” spelled backward. Mr. Hoppy replaces Alfie with larger tortoises, convincing Mrs. Silver who believes the spell is working. She becomes fond of Mr. Hoppy, leading to a heartwarming tale of love, kindness, and whimsy. Published in September 1990, this was the last of Dahls booked published in his lifetime.

Of course, there are many classics like BFG, Matilda, The Witches, The Twits, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and so many more to enjoy. The beautiful thing about Dahl’s books is that they’re timeless and can be enjoyed as if it was the first time you read the story. Visit

Embracing gratitud E

“I don’t have to chase extraordinary moments to find happiness – it’s right in front of me if I’m paying attention and practicing gratitude.” - Brene Brown

On the 21st of September, we are invited to celebrate World Gratitude Day AND International Day of Peace. So if we don’t find ourselves levitating by the end of this day, then we’ve not done it right. But on a serious note, gratitude and peace go hand in hand, we can’t have one without the other. The transformative power of gratitude can easily be missed with the noise and distraction of everyday life, but I’m here to help give you the introduction and tools to guide you to a new small habit to practise each day which will improve your life.

What is Gratitude?

gratitude, at its core, is a transformative state of mind that transcends mere appreciation. it is the profound act of recognizing and cherishing the blessings, big and small, that enrich our lives. gratitude is the art of being present, focusing on the abundance surrounding us and not and not what we don’t. It empowers us to find joy in the simplest of moments, form deeper connections with others and invite positivity into our lives. embracing gratitude as a way of life, we discover that it’s not just a fleeting emotion but a profound journey of appreciation that leads to a more meaningful and purposeful existence.

Benefits of Gratitude

as we cultivate a mindset of appreciation, a myriad of benefits await us. First and foremost, practising gratitude improves our mental wellbeing by reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety and adopting a positive outlook on life. additionally, it strengthens our relationships, promoting empathy and deepening connections with others. gratitude also enhances our resilience, helping us navigate through challenges with grace and finding meaning in adversity. From improved sleep and reduced stress to a boost in overall happiness and physical health, gratitude opens the door to a life of abundance and contentment. embrace the art of thankfulness, and

you’ll discover a path to a more fulfilled and joyous existence. Not to mention, you can do it anywhere in the world and better yet, it’s free!

How to Practice Gratitude

there are a magnitude of ways you can practise gratitude like going for a simple mindful walk and consciously taking in your surroundings. you could start by being thankful for your sight to see the beauty of the world, the legs which take you on your adventures, and your health that allow you to go outside unassisted. You will then find your mind begins to snowball into all the other wonderful things you are thankful for. Another affirming method is a gratitude journal which i will go further into shortly but this is the method i’ve used for years and it’s a great way to get you thinking, affirming and manifesting. Expressing gratitude to others is another powerful tool—letting others know how much they mean to you can strengthen bonds and create a positive atmosphere.

How to Create a Habit

creating a new habit can be tough, especially if your life is pretty busy juggling a full-time job, children, afterschool clubs, summer holidays and then some. But it’s just like James Clear said in his book, Atomic Habits, it’s all about making the smallest tweaks in our lives and how they compound over time to build long-lasting effects and lifestyle shifts. a great way to incorporate a new habit is by Habit Stacking - this is where you can stack your new behaviour onto a habit that is already established. For example, the two minutes in the morning and night when brushing our teeth, which is already habitual, we can stack the habit of gratitude on top of this by listing everything we are thankful for that morning, that day, that week, that person who held the door open

for you when your hands were full or even the cup of tea or coffee you had that morning. the practice needn’t take long nor is it tricky to fit in with our busy lives.

Gratitude Affrimations

Now that we’ve given light to the blessings in our life, it’s time to affirm them. Creating personalised, short and impactful affirmations becomes a powerful tool to reinforce your mindset and uplift your spirit. Whether spoken aloud or written in a journal, repeat these affirmations daily to instil a deep sense of gratitude within. They are pretty simple to create as these are unique to you but to give you an idea, here’s an example,

“I am grateful to have a home that is safe and warm, with clean running water, electricity, and food in the cupboards.”

“I am grateful I live in a safe country.”

Gratitude Journal

Begin by selecting a journal that resonates with your style, or you can find many Gratitude Journals online or on etsy which have prompts and activities to get you going. a journal is just the physical practice of gratitude. personally, having a journal to collect all of my thoughts and affirmations can almost turn into a gratitude archive. i love to be able to come back to this tangible tool and flick through and reflect on all that i have to be thankful for in my life.

I invite you to give it a go today. I have created the page adjacent to prompt you in taking a couple of minutes today, to shine a light on things, people, places etc and flood it with gratitude. Something on your mind but can’t make it out what is it? Write it down, it really helps to muddle through all our thoughts and make sense of it.

It’s back, bIgger and better for 2023 It’s back, bIgger and better for 2023

It’s back - bigger and better for 2023!

Trevi’s Warrior Women Walk will take place on Sunday, 15 October 2023. Trevi is once again urging local women to come together and step out to support those affected by domestic violence and abuse and show us that they can take on the world!

Trevi launched it’s very first Warrior Women Walk last year, and to their delight, over 250 awesome women came together to walk 10k and raise over £20k for the charity. They hope to encourage 500 women to participate this year and double their fundraising target.

The Warrior Women Walk invites women to tackle the 10k walk, starting and finishing at Burrator Reservoir Discovery Centre, and raise vital support for women affected by trauma and abuse. The Warrior Women Walk takes in some of Devon’s most stunning scenery. The 10k route will walk you around the beautiful Burrator reservoir and rugged moorland of Sheepstor with a slight variation on last year incorporating more of the stunning Leat! This year’s Warrior Women

Walk features a staggered start to accommodate the increase in walkers and sees the return of some optional fun activities to challenge you on your way around!

The walk allows women to connect with friends and other amazing women. Trevi hope the 10k challenge will bring together women who have been affected by trauma and abuse, whether personally or a loved one; women who want to see a future without violence against women and girls and women looking to have fun with their girlfriends and raise money for charity; Trevi invites you to take on their warrior challenge!

Last year 1.7 million women were victims of domestic abuse in the UK, with a domestic abuse-related call being made to the police every 30 seconds. Whilst domestic abuse-related crimes in Plymouth decreased in 2021/22 by 1.5%, domestic abuse-related non-crime incidents increased by 9.5%. Domestic violence accounts for 31.5% of all crime in Plymouth compared to the national figure of 17%.

Trevi supports more than 1000 women who have been affected by domestic violence or abuse annually. 80% of the women they support through their Jasmine Mother’s Recovery residential rehab centre and 67% of women

accessing their Sunflower Women’s Centre have or are experiencing domestic abuse.

Michelle was supported by Trevi and says, ‘I came to Trevi when I was eight months pregnant. Social services were planning to remove my daughter from me at birth as I was addicted to drugs and in an abusive relationship. The staff at Trevi were beyond amazing. I felt totally supported by all of them and never felt judged for my past mistakes. They were always there to listen if I was struggling with anything. They believed in me, which gave me the strength to keep going.’

This year’s event is kindly sponsored by Plymouth City Bus , a long time supporter of Trevi. Jess Bolt, Marketing Manager says, ‘Inspiring strength, empowering unity, and celebrating resilience. We proudly stand as sponsors of the Warrior Women’s Walk, and are honoured to be able to support the amazing work that Trevi does for the women of Plymouth.’

Women can walk as individuals, in teams, business groups and organisations. All are encouraged to get involved and register for an official place in the Warrior Women Walk 2023.

Warming

Recipes

as we step into the realm of all things autumn, here are some warming recipes to get you in the spirit.

Serves - 8 Difficulty - Easy

1 2

Make the pastry by tipping both flours and the sugar into a bowl with a large pinch of salt. Using fingers, rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles crumble topping, then rub in the soft cheese until the pastry comes together. (If it’s still crumbly, add 1 tbsp iced water and it should come together.) Knead for 30 seconds on a surface, then cut off about a third of the pastry. Mould both pieces into flat rounds. Wrap and chill for at least 1 hr.

Butter a 23cm pie dish and, on a lightly floured surface, roll the larger piece of pastry out into a round that fits the base of the dish with some overhanging. Push the pastry down in and around the dish to line it. Sprinkle the cornflour over the blackberries and gently mix together. Tip the blackberries and all their sugary juices into the pastry case and dot with the butter. Beat together the egg and milk to make a glaze, then brush the edge of the pie with some of it.

3 5 3 1

IngrEdIEnts

• 600g blackberries

• 100-125g granulated sugar

• 25g butter, plus extra for the tin

• 2 tbsp cornflour

• 1 egg, beaten

• 1 tbsp milk

• vanilla ice cream, to serve

Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 with a baking tray inside. Brush the top of the pie with more egg glaze and bake for 20 mins, then brush with the glaze again, scatter generously with extra sugar and bake for another 20-25 mins until the pastry is a deep golden colour and the juices are bubbling. Leave the pie to cool for at least 30 mins, then serve as is, or with ice cream.4

For the pastry

• 300g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting

• 1 tbsp cornflour

• 2 tbsp granulated sugar, plus extra for the topping

• 150g cold butter, cut into small pieces

• 150g soft cheese

Wash and drain the blackberries, being careful not to break them up, then tip into a bowl with the sugar. (If they are wild blackberries, they will need slightly more sugar.) Toss together and set aside while you roll out the pastry.

For an easy pie, simply roll out the rest of the pastry, drape it over the top, then trim and fork or crimp the edges together. For a lattice finish, roll the remaining pastry into a square, roughly 30 x 30cm. Cut out 10 strips of roughly the same width. Lay five of the strips vertically over the pie, then weave with the remaining five horizontally, to create an even lattice over the fruit. pinch the edges, then trim the excess and crimp.

Plum Gin

Makes 1 litre Difficulty - Easy

Wash the plums and remove leaves and stalks. Pierce all over with a fork or the tip of a sharp knife, then halve (leave the stones in). Tip into a large, sterilised, sealable jar (about 2 litres) with a wide neck. Alternatively, divide between two smaller jars.

Sprinkle over 150g sugar and add the gin. Seal the lid and give the jar a good shake. Store in a cool, dark place for at least a month, giving it a shake every few days for the first week or so to mix everything together and dissolve the sugar.

Check the flavour after a month and continue to infuse if you prefer a stronger flavour – it can be left for up to three months. Or, add another 50g sugar and leave for two or three weeks if you prefer it sweeter. When you’re happy with the flavour, strain the gin through a fine mesh cloth or muslin into a clean bottle and discard the fruit (you can also eat the boozy plums alongside sponge cakes or ice cream). Store in a cool, dark place. Drink on its own, in a G&T or mix with lemon juice and sugar syrup for a plum gin sour.

IngrEdIEnts

• 600g ripe plums

• 150-200g caster sugar

• 1 litre gin

Beetroot & Feta Pasta

Cuts into - 12 Difficulty - easy

IngredIents

• 2 large beetroots, peeled & chopped into chunks

• 1 tbsp olive oil

• 2 onions, finely chopped

• 4 carrots, peeled & finely chopped

• 1 small bunch of basil

• 2 garlic cloves

• 400g wholemeal pasta

• 75g low-fat crème fraîche

• 100g feta

1

• 4 celery sticks, finely chopped, celery tops kept separate 2

Put a large pan of salted water on a high heat, bring to the boil and add the beetroot chunks. Boil for 5 mins, then transfer the beetroot to a plate using a slotted spoon. Set the pan of cooking water aside.

Meanwhile, put the olive oil in a large frying pan set over a medium heat, then add the onions, celery and carrots, and cook for 8 mins until softened. Finely chop the basil stalks and celery tops, then add to the pan along with the garlic, and fry for another 30 seconds.

Tip the pasta into the pan of beetroot water and simmer for 13-15 mins (depending on what pasta you’re using) until just cooked but retaining a little bite. Drain, reserving 200ml of the pasta water and tip the pasta back into the pan.

Meanwhile, put the beetroot with half of the fried veg into the bowl of a food processor with most of the basil leaves and the crème fraîche, then blitz until smooth. Gradually add the reserved pasta water to loosen until you have a thick mixture.

Stir this sauce through the pasta along with the remaining fried veg and some seasoning. Divide between bowls, crumble over the feta, then scatter with the remaining basil leaves. Grind over some black pepper, if you like.

Courgette & Lemon Risotto

• 1 onion, finely chopped

• 1 large garlic clove, crushed

Honeyed Almond Figs

Makes - 1 Difficulty - easy

IngredIents

• 2 ripe figs

• 2 tbsp 0% fat Greek yogurt

• 1 tbsp runny honey

• pinches of cinnamon

• a few flaked toasted almonds

Cut the figs in half. Spoon over the yogurt, then drizzle with honey. Sprinkle with cinnamon and a few flaked toasted almonds.

• 2 lemon thyme sprigs

• 250g courgette, diced

• 50g vegetarian Italian style hard cheese

• 2 tbsp crème fraîche

Melt the butter in a deep frying pan. Add the onion and fry gently until softened for about 8 mins, then add the garlic and stir for 1 min. Stir in the rice to coat it in the buttery onions and garlic for 1-2 mins.

Dissolve the stock cube in 1 litre of boiling water, then add a ladle of the stock to the rice, along with the lemon juice and thyme. Bubble over a medium heat, stirring constantly. When almost all the liquid has been absorbed, add another ladle of stock and keep stirring. Tip in the courgette and keep adding the stock, stirring every now and then until the rice is just tender and creamy. Serve with lemon zest, vegetarian Italian-style hard cheese and crème fraîche.
