AN ECO-FRIENDLY CHRISTMAS Written by Charlotte Cooper With Christmas fast approaching it’s easy to forget how much our holiday habits impact the environment. Be proactive for our planet and read our 5 easy steps to an eco-friendly Christmas.

W

ith all the excitement at Christmas time, it’s easy to forget about the potentially negative impact our plastic consumption and wastage has on the environment.

Although it’s primarily down to retailers to take action to stop the production of needless and unnecessary plastic, there are many things we can do to minimise our carbon footprint and increase the amount we recycle starting with the holidays, without cutting down on the festive twinkle. Here are our best top tips for an environmentally friendly Christmas that will reduce damage to the planet or ruin your Christmas spirit.

Get creative with eco-friendly wrapping paper, or find a reliable source.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in all

the excitement over decorative Christmas paper, with the average household going through four rolls of wrapping paper every Christmas.

This glossy paper we are used to seeing beneath the tree may look lovely, but it certainly isn’t great for the environment. The plastic used in the manufacturing process to make the paper shiny means it becomes non-recyclable. This year why not use recyclable brown paper? You could even jazz it up with more eco-friendly decorations such as fabric ribbon and string.

Alternatively, you can source 100% environmentally friendly and recycled wrapping paper from various companies, such as your local post office or Re-wrapped, a Londonbased company specialising in the production of environmentally friendly wrapping paper, as well as cards,

Don’t dump your decorations, eat them instead!

Tinsel and baubles are usually full of plastic which can’t be recycled because of the vast amounts of glitter used in them. You may be able to box them up and use them the following year, but eventually, they’ll get damaged, broken or a little tired, meaning, in the long run, they’ll be disposed of anyway.

An environmentally-friendly (and ever so tasty!) alternative this year is to hang home-baked Christmas goodies from the tree. BBC good food has a selection of step-by-step recipes you can follow to create some tasty treats for the tree and the rest of your home, including sugar charms, gingerbread bunting and snowy Christmas tree biscuit decorations.

Every cracking Christmas dinner is completed with Christmas crackers, but all those plastic prizes more often than not get thrown away, never to be seen again. This year try to do a little research before you head to the shops and aim to purchase plastic6

free recyclable crackers, as well as recyclable food packaging.

Waitrose and John Lewis have said they stopped selling Christmas crackers containing plastic toys from 2020. This is part of plans to cut down on single-use plastic.

E-cards - a waste-free alternative to spread your holiday greetings.

Other supermarkets are starting to make changes too; Asda removed plastic windows and film from their mince pies last Christmas, Sainsbury’s has removed all plastic packaging from its Christmas crackers and Tesco has switched to a plastic-free, biodegradable glitter on its Christmas trees, plants, and flowers back in 2019. They have also removed glitter from their own-brand wrapping paper, tags and Christmas cards. Marks and Spencer have also removed glitter from its entire Christmas range, and have made all of their cards and giftwrapping products glitter-free from the end of 2020.

Do your research and check the information when you shop to ensure you are making responsible and environmentally friendly choices. If you’re feeling particularly creative you could go one step further and make your own Christmas crackers this year.

There are several websites you can check out where you can purchase eco-friendly craft supplies and find easy step-by-step guides and suggestions for sustainable cracker prizes. UK company, the littlecraftybugs (www.littlecraftybugs.co.uk/), has a selection of 100% recyclable natural craft crackers on their website. All of their non-foil crackers, together with

There are many reasons why sending a digital card this Christmas is a great idea. Firstly, you can send the e-card from the comfort of your own home — no need to keep running to the post office in the chilly weather, and it’ll save you the cost of postage!

Secondly, you can make it personal by adding a Christmas family photo and a personalised message. Finally, and most importantly, it’s environmentally friendly! Most store brought Christmas cards are covered in glitter. Glitter is not good news for the environment as it’s effectively tiny pieces of plastic (that often get washed down the sink and end up in our oceans), and cards that contain glitter cannot be recycled.

Besides, when you choose not to use paper, you’re doing your bit to save trees.

What about a ‘green’ Christmas tree this year?

Most Christmas trees are green, but not all trees are eco. The big question is, should you buy a fake or a real Christmas tree this year?

Artificial Christmas trees are made from a combination of plastic-based materials and therefore cannot be recycled. Although greener options are available, according to the Carbon Trust, you would need to box up, store, and reuse your artificial Christmas tree at least 10 times to keep its environmental impact lower than that of a real tree.

However, if you do prefer the look of an artificial tree (or perhaps you need to for allergy reasons) you can still be mindful about the tree you choose by seeking out trees made of recyclable or degradable materials. You can also try looking in your local charity shops for donated trees that you could spruce up and re-home, or online sites such as Freecycle. Visit www.freecycle.org/ for more information.

Real Christmas trees require no manufacturing process and are 100% recyclable. Although there are some concerns over the environment in terms of cutting trees down and losing habitat for wildlife, Christmas trees are not usually grown in wild forests but are a crop like any other (always check with whoever you are purchasing from to make sure the tree was not wild forest sourced). Therefore purchasing a real Christmas tree from a local farmer helps to support the rural economy. Once Christmas trees are harvested, more are planted in their place.

The Christmas trees that are purchased and decorated (hopefully with eco-friendly and recyclable products!) can by mulched for landscaping or turned into woodchips once Christmas is over. Recycle Devon offers a Christmas tree collection service to recycle your trees responsibly. Visit www.recycledevon. org/recycle-your-christmas-trees to find your local authority for details on recycling real Christmas trees in your area.

On the island, there’s a induction hob with an extractor, and the couple chose a Quooker boiling tap.

Colin and Jo wanted the kitchen to be a living space, and the Nolte kitchen offers them just that, with open display shelves with practical hidden storage, including at the end of one of the cupboards which would otherwise be an end panel.

By Design … couple’s ‘showroom’ kitchen with the wow factor, thanks to KF Kitchens

f you thought it was impossible to recreate a showroom kitchen as a ‘real-life’ kitchen, then think again.

Because the kitchen that Plymouth family firm KF Kitchens have just designed, supplied, and installed for Colin Marshall and Jo Grove could easily swap places with the one the couple saw when they visited the showroom at Faraday Mill: “I think they could use this as a showroom!” said Colin.

“I wanted a ‘wow’, and you get that when you see the kitchen lit up as you come up the driveway to the house.

And then you get another ‘wow’ when you open the kitchen door and come into the room.

“It was the first kitchen I saw when I went into KF Kitchens,” he added, “and I knew straight away that’s what I wanted. I was like a little boy in a sweet shop, I kept saying, ‘I want that, I want that’. And Jo felt exactly the same.”

The kitchen is the latest part of Colin and Jo’s ongoing renovation of the house they bought in Plymstock two years ago. The house is “upside-down,” so the kitchen is upstairs in a new

extension on one side of the house: “When KF Kitchens’ designer Nathan visited us, the room was all new, with fresh walls and lighting, but it was basically just an empty box,” said Colin. “At that stage, we knew what kitchen we wanted, but we didn’t know what should go where.

“Initially, we thought we’d have the kitchen at the other end of the room, but Nathan said, ‘why would you not want the kitchen to be at the front of the room, where the sun comes in’? He worked out exactly what would work and where. He designed everything to fit in with how we wanted to use the space.”

At the front of the new extension is a large balcony, which once finished is spacious enough to dine outside.

It’s connected to the kitchen by fulllength, four-pane sliding patio doors.

Jo said: “As soon as Nathan came up with his design, it made complete sense. The kitchen is full of light, and the balcony is right next to where we prepare our meals, so it’s practical if we want to go outside.”

Another nice touch is the wooden effect secondary worktop at one end of the island, which has concealed sockets for devices, creating a desk for work or leisure. Each end of the island has the stunning Dekton worktop rather than end boards, adding to the stylish look.

The installation took one week, and Colin said: “From the moment everything was delivered on Day 1, to the end, it was a pleasure. Our installer, Kev, is brilliant. And because they give you a figure at the outset, you know exactly how much it will cost.”

DIY FESTIVE DECORATIONS Step 2: Test with a thermometer to make sure wax is between 40° - 46° degrees Celsius and carefully pour the melted coconut wax into your jar. Pour the jar 80% full, let cool to semi-solid, centre the wick and complete final pour.

This is when you can add your festive decorations with a pair of tweezers and gentle place them into the candle.

Coconut Wax Candles

You will need: • A Clean Pot • Fragrance oils • Coconut candle wax • Festive decorations such as sprigs of Christmas tree, orange, cinnamon sticks • Candle wicks & Wick holders • Clean jars (suitable heat proof jars) • Double sided tape or wick stickums • A butter knife • Sharp scissors • Long spout pouring jug • Thermometer • Isopropyl alcohol for the clean-up

When the wax has melted, test with a thermometer to make sure wax is between 48° - 52° degrees Celsius and add your fragrance. If the wax is too hot it will burn off the fragrance, leaving you with a subtle scent, rather than a candle with an amazing scent throw. Add fragrance oils, between 8-10% of total wax weight or essential oils, I recommend 5% for essential oils.

Mix well to ensure fragrance goes through all the wax.

Step 3: Trim flower stems or thistle to 4” tucking them in at varying widths to stagger, again, in the same direction as existing stems. Insert them until almost flush.

Step 3: The wax will begin hardening right away, so do not move or adjust your candle until it has set solid.

Leave to sit for at least three hours before moving. I find it best to trim the wick 5 to 6 hours later to avoid the wick disturbing the top of the candle. Trim the wick, using sharp scissors. Generally, you should trim the wick 1 - 1.5cm above the level of your wax.

Make sure you allow 3 days for the candle fragrances to cure before burning.

Otherwise, the full spectrum of fragrance notes will not be appreciated.

Method from New Zealand Candle Supplies.

Star Wall Hanging

You will need: • Air-dry clay • Yarn or twine • Fishing line or clear sewing thread • Wax paper • Toothpick • Small branch • Rolling pin • X-acto knife, or small paring knife • Scissors • Stars template, or small star cookie cutter (1-2 inches)

Stick the wicks to the bottom of the jar, make sure they are centered. A very small amount of double-sided tape works well.

Ensure the tape is not larger than the wick as this may cause a fire risk. Press down with a butter knife to ensure good adhesion.

Step 1: Melt the wax slowly at a low heat, stir to help it melt. Heat range of 65° - 70° degrees Celsius. Set up your making area, lay down clean newspaper to catch any spills. Ensure all jars are ready with centered wicks, placed on top of the paper.

You will need: • 4-5 stems greenery {eucalyptus} • flowers or 1 stem of thistle • 1 basic wreath • Christmas baubles • Wire

Step 1: Trim stems of greenery leaving 1-2”of stem to insert into the wreath. For eucalyptus, 6-8” overall.

Step 2: Work your way around the wreath inserting stems in the same direction as existing stems, tucking them under the evergreen until they feel secure. Keep in mind you can readjust

roll clay 1/8” to 1/4” thick. Cut out the star templates, lay them on the clay, printed side up, then cut around the stars with a knife. Remove excess clay.

Repeat until you’ve cut out at least 20 stars.

Step 2: Carefully remove the clay stars from the wax paper, and poke a hole for hanging with a toothpick. Set the stars aside to dry on a piece of wax paper. Drying time will be at least 24 hours.

Step 3: After the stars have dried, tie lengths of thread or string to them.

Tie a piece of yarn or twine to either end of the branch to hang it up, then tie the stars to it at varying heights. Adjust the thread lengths, and trim excess thread.

Hang up your new decoration, and enjoy the Christmas holidays!

a Christmas Faux Wreath With Doris the Florist

You will need • 15 small snow cones • 15 micro red sparkle cones • 15 small pine sprigs • 15 snow pine sprigs • 5 Lotus heads • 2 long stems of berry to cut • 2 long stems of gold foliage • 8 small poinsettia • Assorted baubles • 9 cinnamon sticks • Robin • 16 inch straw ring • Reel wire • Bullion wire • Floristry adhesive Glue • Snow spray • Glitter glue • Wired Ribbon • Floristry scissors

STEP 1

Select items you wish to add to your straw wreath for example I have used pine cones, glitter, snow spray, baubles, artificial pine stems, lotus heads, berries, foliage-coloured stems, cinnamon sticks, embellishment accessories, cold floral glue, bullion wire. These can be items you have picked up on walks, purchased from craft shops or any items you have around your home. Spray snow lightly on some of the pine cones and paint ends with glitter glue on the smallest cones.

STEP 2

Secure one end of the wreath with a wire loop to hang, twist ends and secure through wreath test to make sure secure you can also add an extra loop pin and pin in to the straw over the loop for added security.

Note: you can also add ribbon to this loop afterwards if you wish to hang a longer ribbon on the front door wreath for added impact.

STEP 3

Thread the baubles through the top with two equal-length wires, ensuring there’s enough to tie around the wreath. Group small baubles or use a single large one. Tie the wire around the straw wreath, twist to secure, and pin into the straw, keeping the wreath behind the ornament. Apply cold glue on the straw, wait for it to get tacky, then position the ornament on top.

Hold for a minute until it sets. Repeat for other ornaments and materials, placing them where desired on the wreath using the same method (just use glue for the less heavier materials).

Lastly if you wish to add a bow you can either buy an already made bow or take a long piece of wired ribbon or velvet ribbon about 90cm for luxury and make in to a large bow. Wrap bullion wire around the centre piece of bow to pinch together the bow shape, add a long tail of bullion wire together twist at the back of the bow and push long wire ends around the straw wreath carefully and secure at the back and push through the straw wreath.

Top Tips: • Hide a scented Christmas wax in to your wreath to make it smell authentic.

• Use 12” rattan wreath rather than 16” straw wreath to save on materials • You can use a hot glue gun for speed, use with caution as it can cause injury

Nothing says Christmas quite like Elf. Buddy (Ferrell), born human, is raised amongst elves at the North Pole. As he realises that he’s not an elf, he travels from the North Pole to New York City to find his biological father. However, Walter Hobbs (Caan), has no idea Buddy exists and isn’t the Christmas type, but lucky for him Buddy is full of Christmas spirit.

Whilst on their holidays, they unexpectedly fall in love with two local men.

Released in 2004, the magical adventure of the film and fantastic talent of Tom Hanks morphing into various characters truly encompasses the feeling of Christmas.

Take a trip to the North Pole while learning about friendship, bravery, and the spirit of Christmas. As one of my favourites, this one is highly recommended.

I love Tim Burton films especially Edward Scissorhands.

After moving in with Peg, a kindly Avon lady, after his inventor passed, he has to try and fit in with ‘normal’ life all whilst having scissor blades instead of hands. As feelings form for Peg’s daughter things take a turn for the worst when he is blamed for a crime he didn’t commit.

here are lots of wonderful Christmas Markets popping up in South West England that are all worth a visit. We thought we’d share 4 of our favourites which are all within 2 hours of Plymouth.

Plymouth Christmas Market With over 50 local traders selling gifts and delicious hot food right in the heart of Plymouth, the Plymouth Christmas Market is the perfect place to grab yourself some unique Christmas presents. Local traders such as, Kaya Gallery, Olivia’s House, Flapjackery and Devon Rum Company will there so make sure you come on down and show your support. There is also a whole host of entertainment too with choir performances and upcoming artists. This years Christmas Market will be running from Thursday 30th November to Sunday 17th of December, 10am - 6pm (Sundays 10am 5pm) What better way to help your local economy than this festive event.

Totnes Christmas Market The stylish, hippy nature of Totnes makes for an excellent Christmas Market. With over 70+ artisan stalls and street vendors as well as Totnes’ independent stores, there are a huge amount of exciting gift ideas. Kids will also love the free Totnes Gnome Trail and they are even holding craft workshops where you can make your own free pompom robins. Enjoy free music and street entertainment as well as lots of festive lights to get you in the Christmassy mood. Padstow Christmas Festival Calling all foodies! The Padstow Christmas festival features celebrity chefs, cooking demonstrations, a Christmas market, firework display, live music, a lantern parade and so much more. You’ll be able to watch chefs such as, Rick Stein, Paul Ainsworth, Mitch Tonks, Angela Hartnett plus 26 more cook up some delicious dishes. The Christmas Market is full of the best locally-produced food and drink the West Country has to offer. Shipwreck Treasure Museum Explore the Shipwreck Treasure Museum this Christmas as it’s transformed into the most Festive place in Cornwall! The amalgamation has grown the firm to 21 Partners and 110 legal professionals ensuring the continuation of outstanding clients service and trusted advise to companies and individuals across the South West.

The firm has four offices; Torquay, which is their largest office, Plymouth, Exeter and Totnes.

History Kitsons was established in 1826 in Torquay by William Kitson, a solicitor and banker, and as you may have guessed by the name, the founder of Kitsons. Members of the Kitson family continued to run the firm during the 19th century and the last of them was Charles William Kitson who retired in 1900. Over the next 100 years Kitsons merged with other local firms and expanded their presence in Newton Abbot in 1989 and opened their second office. In 2001, Kitsons and Hutchings & Plum merged to form Kitsons Hutchings, however, nine years later, the firm rebranded and become Kitsons LLP. Most recently in October 2023, Kitsons LLP and Boyce Hatton LLP’s announced a merger between the two companies to become Kitson Boyce LLP. In October this year, Kitson Boyce was recognised as one of the top law firms in the UK in The Times Best Law Firms 2024 Top 250 for its expertise in Insolvency and Restructuring across England and Wales. But Kitson Boyce’s accolades don’t just stop there, the firm was also recognised in The Legal 500, which is a prestigious independent legal guide that recommends and ranks law firms and lawyers based on positive client and external feedback. Chambers & Partners UK also praised the firm for their outstanding work in Employment and Family law with Tony Hunt receiving a ‘Band 1’ ranking in Plymouth and the surrounding area for his experience in advising on complex financial remedy proceedings and private law children cases.

Neither firm had any resistance to merging and bringing the teams together. With any new business, it could take a couple of years to train staff, build a client base and create a presence whereas the fusion between teams at Kitson Boyce has been immediate. The mission statement is a simple one, they want to continue to grow and be the law firm of choice for clients and staff. The aim is to continue to be good at what they do, ensure staff enjoy coming to work and be proud of where they work. Working in

So what’s the future for Kitson Boyce?

The plan is to complete the full integration and consolidation of the firm’s case management systems within the next six months and focus on the new identity of the firm. The next goal will be a focus on recruitment and looking at where the firm needs to expand its offering and services.

There’s no plan to expand the office footprint in other areas at this stage, the plan is to focus on what they do and do it well in the areas of Torquay, Exeter, Plymouth and Totnes.

Recipes It’s officially Christmas season so it’s time to give into the festive spirit with some wholesome recipes.

Classic Eggnog Serves - 6 - 8

Ingredients • 1 vanilla pod, split and seeds scraped out • 4 eggs, separated • 100ml sugar syrup • 100ml double cream • 500ml whole milk • 100-150ml brandy • ice

Put the vanilla seeds in a large bowl. Add the egg yolks and sugar syrup, and beat with an electric whisk until pale, about 2-3 mins. Add the cream, milk and brandy, and beat again until just combined. Strain into a punch bowl.

Clean the beaters, then beat the egg whites in a clean bowl to soft peaks. Fold a third of the whipped egg whites into the milk and cream mixture in the punch bowl, then add the remaining whipped egg whites. Gently fold these in until the eggnog is fluffy and smooth. Chill until ready to serve.

Will keep, covered in the fridge, for up to a day. Just before serving, add plenty of ice, then stir gently and ladle into tumblers.

Truffle & Parmesan roast potatoes Serves - 6 - 8

Ingredients • 1½ kg Maris Piper or King Edward potatoes, peeled and cut chunks • 2 tbsp plain flour

Remove the potatoes from the tin, leaving as much oil behind as possible, and pile onto a platter or on a serving dish. Scatter over the remaining parmesan, give the platter or bowl a shake, then drizzle over a little truffle oil (we used ½ tsp, but use as much as you like).

• 200ml vegetable oil • 50g grated parmesan • truffle oil, to taste

Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and cook the potatoes for 6-8 mins until the outsides are starting to soften. Drain well, then leave to steam-dry for a few minutes. Will keep covered and chilled for up to two days. Return the potatoes to the pan, add the flour, put the lid on and shake well to coat the potatoes and fluff them up. Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6.

Pour the oil into a deep roasting tin and put in the oven to heat for 5 mins. Take out of the oven and carefully spoon the potatoes into the hot oil, then baste in the oil so they’re well coated. Spread them out to a single layer and put in the oven to roast for 20 mins. Turn and baste again, roast for another 20 mins, then repeat and roast for a final 15-20 mins or until golden and crisp. Scatter over all but a couple of tablespoonfuls of the parmesan, then put back in the oven for 2 mins so the cheese melts.

Easy Christmas Turkey Serves - 6

Ingredients • 100g butter, softened • 3 rosemary sprigs, leaves picked and finely chopped • 1 turkey (around 4kg, but not more), giblets removed • 1 garlic bulb • 1 lemon, halved • 2 bay leaves • 2 large banana shallots, unpeeled, cut in half lengthways • 250ml white wine • 1 red cabbage (about 900g), cut into 6 wedges • 500ml good-quality chicken stock • 1 tsp cornflour (optional)

Take your turkey out of the fridge at least 1 hr before you cook it. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and beat the butter with the rosemary. Starting from the neck of the turkey, carefully push your fingers underneath the skin until you can get your whole hand between the skin and the breast meat. Trying not to tear the skin as you go, spread the butter inside the pocket, squishing some into the crevice between the thigh and breast meat.

Set aside the turkey on a board to rest for 1 hr, transferring the garlic and bay to the roasting tin for the gravy. If you want crispy skin, don’t cover the turkey. Wrap the cabbage wedges in two parcels of foil, with a spoonful of the turkey juices, season liberally and return to the bottom of the oven to carry on cooking while the turkey rests.

Put the garlic, lemon and bay leaves inside the turkey, then season liberally all over. Put the shallots in your largest flameproof roasting tin and put the turkey on top, breast-side up. Roast for 1 hr, then give it a good baste, pour in the wine and nestle the cabbage wedges in the tin (or underneath the turkey if they won’t fit). Return to the oven for another 30 mins – covered with foil if the turkey is looking too brown. The juices should run clear when you pierce the thickest part of the thigh, or a thermometer should read 75C. If not done, carry on cooking for a further 5-10 mins.

Spoon away most of the turkey fat, then put the tin on the hob over a medium heat. Mash the veg with the back of a wooden spoon to extract as much flavour as possible , then pour in the stock and reduce the gravy by half. If you want to thicken it, stir in the cornflour mixed with 1 tbsp water. Once happy with the consistency, strain and keep warm until ready to eat.

Black Forest Christmas Cups Serves - 6

Ingredients • 500ml double cream • ½ tsp vanilla extract • 2 tbsp icing sugar • 250g Christmas cake or rich fruitcake • 390g jar of black cherries in kirsch, drained, reserving the liquid for drizzling • 50g dark chocolate, chopped

Whisk the cream with the vanilla and icing sugar until it just holds its shape. Crumble the cake into six glasses, then top with a few cherries, a dollop of cream and a drizzle of the kirsch. Scatter over the chopped chocolate.
