OF THE YEAR
Ask Kim Bamford what she loves most about her new kitchen, and she reels off a long list which covers just about everything, and that includes never having to upgrade her kitchen ever again: “I wanted a forever kitchen, and now I’ve got one,” she says.
Kim chose Plymouth family business KF Kitchens to design, supply and fit her kitchen after they were recommended to her by two of her friends: “They both had great experiences with KF Kitchens, so I went straight to them, and I’m so happy I did.”
Kim booked an appointment to visit the KF Kitchens showroom at Faraday Mill, where she was given a tour by designer, Nathan Damarell. Nathan outlined the ballpark figure of each element of the kitchen and a rough overall cost, which gave Kim an immediate understanding of what was possible.
“When Nathan visited, he made
some great suggestions about how we could best use the space, which we hadn’t thought of. Between us, we decided where things should go, and it was then just a case of choosing the finer details, like the colour. It was a nice, simple process.”
The kitchen is the same size as before and the design retains the previous peninsula style kitchen: “But I’ve got double the storage space now,” said Kim. “And there’s more room to move around as well because the space is being used better. It’s much lighter and brighter than the kitchen I had before. It looks bigger, even though it’s not.”
The kitchen took around three weeks to fit, and that includes ripping out and replacing the ceiling. All the work was done by KF Kitchens – the electrics, plumbing, plastering, decorating, and fitting: “They were absolutely fantastic workmen, and all very respectful,” said Kim. “They communicate with each other so that everyone’s ready when it’s their turn to
come in. It was like clockwork.”
For Kim, investing in her beautiful German kitchen with high-end integrated appliances has given her everything she wanted: “We’re going to be staying here for the foreseeable future, so we wanted a kitchen that was stunning to look at, practical to use, and a lovely quality that would be a kitchen for life. And KF Kitchens have delivered us just that.”
KF Kitchens is an ambitious, local, family business that is pushing the boundaries of what is possible in a kitchen. From the moment you walk through the door of their studio, everything becomes possible and available to you, to achieve your dream kitchen.

Slow cookers are perfect for minimal effort and flavorful, handsoff meals—here are some great recipes to try! HBH Woolacotts have a great range of Tower Slow Cookers to get you started.
Serves - 4
IngredIents
• 1 onion, chopped
• 2 celery sticks, finely chopped
• 2 tbsp rapeseed oil
• 3 carrots, halved and cut into chunks
• 2 bay leaves
• ½ pack thyme
• 2 tbsp tomato purée
• 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
• 2 beef stock cubes or stock pots
• 900g beef for braising cut in chunks
• 2 tsp cornflour (optional)
• ½ small bunch parsley, chopped
• buttery mash, to serve (optional)
Fry the onion and celery in 1 tbsp oil over a low heat until they start to soften – about 5 mins. Add the carrots, bay and thyme, fry for 2 mins, stir in the purée and Worcestershire sauce, add 600ml boiling water, stir and tip everything into a slow cooker. Crumble over the stock cubes or add the stock pots and stir, then season with pepper (don’t add salt as the stock may be salty).
Clean out the frying pan and fry the beef in the remaining oil in batches until it is well browned, then tip each batch into the slow cooker. Cook on low for 8-10 hrs, or on high for 4 hrs.
If you want to thicken the gravy, mix the cornflour with a splash of cold water to make a paste, then stir in 2 tbsp of the liquid from the slow cooker. Tip back into the slow cooker, stir and cook for a further 30 mins on high. Stir in the parsley and season again to taste. Serve with mash, if you like. Leave to cool before freezing.
Serves - 6
•2 tbsp olive oil
•1 red onion, sliced
•2 garlic cloves
•2 large aubergines, cut into 1.5cm pieces
•3 courgettes, halved and cut into chunks
• 3 mixed peppers, cut into chunks
1• 1 tbsp tomato purée
• 6 large ripe tomatoes, roughly chopped
• small bunch of basil, roughly chopped, extra to serve
• few thyme sprigs
• 400g can plum tomatoes
• 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
• 1 tsp brown sugar
• sourdough, to serve
Heat the oil in a large frying pan and fry the onion for 8 mins until translucent. Add the garlic and fry for 1 min. Turn the heat to medium-high, add the aubergines and fry for 5 mins until golden. Stir in the courgettes and peppers and fry for 5 mins more until slightly soft. Add the tomato purée, fresh tomatoes, herbs, canned tomatoes, vinegar, sugar and 1 tsp salt and bring to the boil.
Transfer to the slow cooker and cook on low for 5-6 hours or until everything is soft and the sauce has thickened. Season, scatter over some extra basil, and serve with sourdough, if you like.
Serves - 4
• 2 tsp olive oil
• 1 onion, finely chopped
• 3 garlic cloves, crushed or finely grated
• 6 anchovy fillets
• large pinch of chilli flakes (optional)
• 1 tsp dried oregano
• 400g can cherry tomatoes or chopped tomatoes
• 600g prepared squid, tubes cut into rings, plus tentacles
• 3 tbsp capers, drained
• 150g pitted black olives
• 125ml white wine (or use water)
• small handful of parsley, finely chopped
• crusty bread, to serve (optional)
Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and fry the onion for 6-8 mins until soft and beginning to brown. Add the garlic and anchovies and cook for 1 min more before scattering in the chilli, if using, and the oregano. Cook for 30 seconds, then tip into the slow cooker.
Serves - 4
• 1 large onion, peeled and cut into thick slices
• 2 carrots, halved lengthways and chopped
• 1 small or medium chicken
• 2 tbsp butter, softened
• 1 bay leaf
Preheat the slow cooker if necessary. Put the onion and carrot in the base of the stock pot to form a protective layer to sit the chicken on, and add 100ml boiling water. Gently ease the chicken skin away from the breast. Stir some salt and pepper into the butter and push the butter under the skin. Put the bay leaf in the cavity of the chicken and sit on top of the onion and carrot.

Cook on low for 5 hrs, then check that the chicken is cooked by wiggling the wing – it should feel very loose. Tip the chicken up so any liquid inside flows out, then cook on high for 30 mins. If the chicken isn’t cooked through after the initial time, cook for another hour, then turn the heat up. If you want the skin to be browned, grill it for a couple of minutes (make sure your slow cooker insert is flameproof if you keep it in the pot, or transfer it to a roasting tin).
There will be some gravy in the base of the dish with the veg, tip everything through a sieve and press the veg gently to make sure you get every last drop. Serve the veg on the side, if you like.
Add the mushrooms and cook over a high heat for another 3 mins until softened. Sprinkle over the flour and stir to combine. Pour in the chicken stock, bring the mixture to the boil, then add the bay leaf and simmer for another 10 mins.
