We’re moving into the second half of the year now, and with Summer Solstice already behind us, we back on our way to Greenwich Mean Time. We don’t mean to sound completely pessimistic (hey, perhaps you like the Winter?) but it does remind us how quickly the year can pass and to pay attention to any goals we may have set ourselves for 2016.

BUSINESS PROFILE Chris Reilly is the centre owner of the Plymouth branch of Signs Express. We rely on signs everyday to tell us where to go and where we are, and we spoke to Chris about the importance of signage for businesses. Nearly 20 years ago, Chris Reilly left the Navy and opened the Plymouth branch of Signs Express. He’s part of the largest signs company in the UK and Ireland, which has 25 years experience and branches across the country. They’re “Proud to Franchise”. At age 40, Chris retired from the Navy but wasn’t ready to call it a day with his career. He was keen to work for himself, so set about finding a franchise with his wife. “We looked at a lot of franchises, and looked at their concepts and understood what was required. We saw a lot of good ones and some not as good, but we chose Signs Express because, in our opinion, it was the way to go. They’ve been very good and have expanded the network significantly over the time we have been with them.”

One person specialises in vehicle wrapping and another does a lot of installations, then there’s a production manager, and designers who create the concept before it’s produced. Chris doesn’t get too involved with the production of signage, but manages his talented team and looks after clients as he brings their ideas and projects to life. Chris and his team also compete to win awards within the franchise, coming in as a finalist in 2014 for Best Sign Project. This is judged not only on the final product, but also on the entire project management. Back in 2005, the team were presented with awards for the Best Vehicle Graphics project, for which they worked on graphics for a powerboat. There are few limits to what Signs Express can do in this industry. The business specialises in vehicle graphics, exterior and interior signs, window graphics, exhibition displays, PVC banners, labels and stickers, and health and safety signs for Plymouth and the surrounding areas. of the Roland Levinsky building at Plymouth University was created by the team at Signs Express.

It’s easy to spot their work, and many people in the city walk by it every day. The stainless steel signage on the wall

We were involved with the whole build “The reason we liked that project so much is because we were involved with the whole build. As the building was being put together we were involved with sorting signs for inside as well.”

L-R: Chris Reilly, Sam Johnson, Mark Timson, Simon Hallett & Steve Heath

Sometimes the projects are for existing businesses which are going through a rebrand and refurbishment. One of those companies was Gillakaster Solicitors, who had new signage plus digitally-printed, etched effect vinyl applied to interior windows. At the moment the team are working on signage for Burts Chips, which includes a vehicle wrap on a Mini Cooper. This is carried out in a temperature

- SIGNS EXPRESS, PLYMOUTH controlled vehicle bay, which ensures that the member of staff has the perfect environment to work in while achieving a high-quality finish on the product.

Our industry tends to progress very quickly with technology

Dartmoor Brewery took a large white van to Signs Express for a vehicle wrap with their logo and branding. They needed a black background as part of their branding and identity, so the entire van was wrapped and it’s very difficult to tell that the van was once white. This wrapping is hardwearing against chips and scratches, and can eventually be peeled off to reveal the paintwork underneath as it was.

This all forms part of Chris’s busy, daily schedule, which starts off with a drive through the beautiful South Hams where he lives. His days include production meetings with the team, responding to quote requests and keeping on top of admin, between meetings with new and existing clients to organise projects. Part of their service is the offer of free site visits as Chris discusses their signage requirements with them.

Chris Reilly When Chris isn’t at work, you can find him sailing. In June, he and five others (including his cyclist/ runner son) took up the challenge of the South West Three Peaks Yacht Race. This involved sailing 125 miles, cycling 140 miles and running 29 miles in just one weekend, and all money raised by the team and their supporters has gone to St Luke’s Hospice.

the range of products and services on offer. “Our industry tends to progress very quickly with technology.”

Back in the office, Chris is constantly looking ahead to the future to see who he can work with next. Their equipment is all fairly new, and each investment reduces their lead times and extends

It seems that the team at Signs Express, Plymouth, have dealt with such a huge range of products and projects that it might be difficult to find something they can’t do.

The team have also been utilising their ‘Rolls Roller’ flatbed, which applies digital images to large panels quickly, efficiently and accurately. Chris believes that signage is an incredibly important part of any business. “Signs and graphics are still one of the most cost effective advertising mediums and can last for years, so they’re a great investment for any business. 97% of people in our recent survey said that professional signs help give a positive first impression of a business so it’s an opportunity not to be missed.”

It’s Time To

picnic! A family picnic is one of summer’s most simple pleasures. We all have fond memories of sunny days in a treasured spot, spent eating sandwiches and cakes while surrounded by colourful blankets and greenery. Relive those memories now the warm weather is back, and pack up tasty food and drink and head to a beautiful beach, a grassy spot by a river or your favourite park.

apple mojito To serve three: Squeeze and place 12 lime wedges into a jug. Dust with some sugar, add plenty of mint leaves (more for flavour), add ice and pour in 200ml of apple juice. Mix it all up and top with soda or lemonade. This can be prepped and put together in a jug at the picnic, or be poured ready-made into a flask to keep cool and be served into plastic cups. Remember to pack straws! This also makes for a refreshing drink to serve at a BBQ.

Plymbridge Woods

These woods have plenty of places to park up, and it’s already popular with dog walkers. Go for a paddle in the stream and enjoy this tranquil location.

Burrator Reservoir

Dartmoor has plenty to offer and Burrator is one of many places to enjoy a picnic. Find a quiet spot next to the water and track down the ice cream van for pudding!

bacon frittata

virgin colada

6 large eggs 1 red onion, thinly sliced 350g new potatoes 4 rashers bacon, chopped 85g mature cheddar 1. Fry the onions and potatoes in a pan until tender. Add the bacon and fry for a further 2-3 minutes. 2. Whisk the eggs in a jug and add the potato, onion and bacon, plus the cheese and some salt and pepper. 3. Pour this entire mix into the hot, greased frying pan and allow to cook. Once the bottom is cooked, flip out onto a plate and back into the pan to allow the other side to cook. 4. Slice into segments, then leave to cool and serve cold at the picnic.

To serve three: Pour 500ml pineapple juice, 200ml coconut cream and ice into a blender. Blend until smooth and serve. For a picnic, pour into a large flask to keep cool and serve later in plastic cups. If enjoying at home, garnish the rim with a segment of pineapple.

Take a small, portable BBQ out with you to prepare some good, hot food. You’ll need to check with your local authority before firing it up in a public space, but in the right spot it will really enhance your family picnic!

top tip If you’re let down by rain, have your picnic indoors. Roll out the blanket and go online to find videos of past festival acts to play on the TV. Chances are the crowds you see will be dancing in the rain anyway! Kids will enjoy using the the plastic plates and cups, and you’ll have the kitchen on hand should you need anything extra to serve up the grub!

Test Drive a New Apartment

T

he panoramic sea views, private landscaped gardens and convenient location of Edgcumbe Court on the Stonehouse Peninsula in Plymouth could be your first step into a new world of retirement. Owned and managed by Nazareth Care Charitable Trust, this new development offers contemporary, purpose built retirement apartments specifically designed for comfort and security. These days, when we make any important purchase we like to take time to explore the advantages or disadvantages that the new choice will bring – for example, when we buy a new car many of us take up the option of a test drive. Any change is important, but nothing more than moving to a new location, especially if this entails leaving a family home in exchange for a new lifestyle. That is why Nazareth Retirement Villages have pioneered their own ‘Trial in Style’ scheme. For those who wish to try out the concept of living in a retirement village there is the opportunity to undertake a stay of up to 5 days in a brand new fully equipped and furnished apartment. This enables the location to be explored and the benefits of the on-site social and leisure facilities can be enjoyed, including a daily 3 course lunch in the restaurant.

Balcony with a view

Sales Manager Kay Knowles says ‘We find that many of our residents have lived in their existing home for a considerable number of years. The thought of moving can be quite intimidating particularly if they live on their own. Our ‘trial in style’ scheme is our way of helping them to decide whether Edgcumbe Court is right for them.’

PLYMOUTH’S BEST BUSINESSES You can tell a lot about a person from the books they have on their shelves, writes Duncan Little.

On the top shelf there is a copy of Hillary Clinton’s 2003 memoirs, Living History, which neatly nestles alongside Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom. There’s Roy Jenkins’ highly acclaimed biography on Churchill’s life. As a quick aside, Trevor’s middle name is Winston as he was born on 30th January 1965, the day of the former Prime Minister’s state funeral. Near to Jenkins’ work is one of Trevor’s favourites: Bill Walsh’s The Score Takes Care of Itself: My Philosophy of Leadership. Bill was a NFL manager who successfully turned around the fortunes of the San Francisco 49ers and set down a blueprint of how to successfully manage teams.

The book is practically required reading in some boardrooms and, at its heart, it contains a clear message of how to properly treat your fellow human beings – a key part of Portcullis Legals philosophy. On the walls in the adjacent meeting room, where I am about to interview Trevor, are framed and signed football shirts – including one with Pele’s autograph on it. Football is an important part of Trevor’s life. Growing up in Devonport, Trevor would often play in the back streets with his friends for hours and went on to run the Umbro Total Soccer Academy for 13 years and ‘scout’ for a number of professional teams – including Blackburn, Watford and Wolves. He aspired to build his own business and, at school, he realised he could achieve his goals in life and be a fundamentally sound person in the process. “For me, it’s important to be a good person that’s doing good whilst doing business,” explains Trevor. “I think it’s really important to be a decent person with integrity.” And that integrity has certainly paid off. Awarded the accolade of The Herald Small Business of the Year 2016, it’s been 28 years of hard graft on a business which he started at the age of 23, with all of the ups and downs inbetween.

“I could see a gap in the market to provide legal advice for people at home at their convenience in a friendly and affordable way, and we still provide that service in tandem with the opportunity to visit our Law Store in Plymstock” “Our business is focusing on Wills, Legal Trusts and Power of Attorneys and delivering it in a friendly but innovative way with longer opening hours that suit our customers lifestyles.” It’s an area of business which Trevor has made to be his own.

And 51 year old entrepreneur Trevor Worth, of Portcullis Legals, certainly has an impressive array of literature in the reception area of his offices in Cornwood, Ivybridge.

Our business is focusing on Wills, Legal Trusts and Power of Attorneys

He qualified in Trust and Estate planning to the gold worldwide standard with The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. He also gained his Master’s degree in Business and Administration at Exeter University. In short, he really knows his stuff which means he’s also developing a business platform which allows people to cut through the jargon associated with legals and be able to do it themselves through an app. Trevor has designed an app which allows you to quickly complete questionnaires for straightforward Wills and Powers of Attorney.

It is good news for clients as it’ll provide a massive saving on solicitor’s high street fees and it means people can complete their affairs in their own time and pace. “It’ll disrupt the market place,” explains Trevor. “The difference will be price and convenience. It’s all about the customers and what is best for them.”

www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

Great Blue Hole, Belize AND ENTREPRENEURS Portcullis Legals will also be launching a specific search tool in September dedicated to helping you find the right lawyer for your needs and in your locality across the UK, in partnership with a Canadian based Google Partner. It’s called ‘Lawyer Locate’ and, in short, it’ll ensure easy access to a fullyqualified legal professional whose expertise can help you. Innovation is a key factor in Trevor’s achievements. His business has a retail store, Portcullis Law Store, based in Plymstock, designed for people looking for estate planning advice. It’s a simple idea which Trevor describes as showing that his team are effectively “disruptive innovators” and he is often quoted in national legal publications as an innovative entrepreneur.

We are different to traditional lawyers

“We are different to traditional lawyers,” he explains. “We are totally focused on the customer and we’re certainly not vanilla. We are thinking and acting differently for the benefit of the customer. We are definitely not the same old tired model that customers are used to on the high street. So, we don’t charge for phone calls or letters. In short, we are good people who are good at what we do, specialising in one area of law”. “Innovation is the oxygen of business. You need to challenge what is there as it can always be done a better way. You just have to find that way.” It means his unique approach to business can provide help in a number of ways. From the traditional face to face meetings – either at home or in their office through to their legal store with its longer opening hours - and, finally, with the use of apps which allows an internet savvy market to engage in their product on a 24/7 basis. “We are very excited by it,” he says. “The feedback from focus groups is phenomenal. An app means you can get what you want when you want it and where you want it and allows us another route to market – at home, in store or online with Portcullis”.

His upbringing in Devonport helped to mould him into the person he is today. He is hugely proud of the city and his working class background which saw him grow up in Bennett Street, near Devonport Column. “Happy days with some great people”. “It taught me respect, hard work and integrity. I saw lots of mums, but particularly dads go to work in the dockyard and realised that you need to graft hard and if you had lots of drive and motivation then you can do well for yourself.” His childhood was a happy one as he grew up in a one parent family where his mum worked all hours as a cleaner, which has always provided him with that positive work ethic and a motivation to challenge convention. “I love it when someone says “you can’t do that,”” he says with a gleeful smile. “Last year I did the Arctic Husky Challenge with a close friend and which raised £12,500 for charity. It was very tough, both emotionally and physically, but I wanted to do something to raise funds for a charity that is close to my family’s heart and to challenge myself.” “The trek was a life defining moment and it has made me more tolerant of other people’s challenges. I saw kindness from other people around me as they helped me through it all.”

His mum is now 74 and is very proud of both Trevor’s achievements and those of his sister who works as a nurse practitioner at Derriford Hospital. “My wife Michele and my very young children Alex and Grace give me all the momentum I need to keep driving forward, innovating and helping others.” Sitting in his office, nestled in Dartmoor National Park, sipping coffee under Pele’s signed football shirt, I feel the sense of drive, enthusiasm and determination which has seen Trevor’s meteoric rise in the business world. At a young age he decided he wanted to go into business as he got a ‘spark’ from it. It’s a spark which is still igniting today, which will go on to provide inspiration for future generations of zesty innovators. Portcullis Law Store 246 Dean Cross Road, Plymstock, Plymouth, PL9 7AZ. Portcullis Legals Ltd. 3 Delamore Park, Cornwood, Ivybridge, PL21 9QP. Telephone: 01752 401 401 Email: enquiries@portcullislegals.co.uk

It’s that foot up the ladder approach which he is now introducing into the business world with the creation of an Academy for young entrepreneurs. His aim is to help 50 young people a year to develop their talent and provide them with mentoring and allow them to fulfil their potential and put their ideas into action. It’ll provide assistance with marketing, strategy and accounting in partnership with two close business associates. He actively recruits team members from the City College and also the University of Plymouth as he is keen to support the ‘great job’ which both establishments are doing.

Stay Safe in the Sunshine Advice on how to care for your skin in the sun pops up every year, but it’s important to take note. Cases of skin cancer (malignant melanoma) have increased by 360% since the late 1970s, but following some simple steps and staying sun-safe can significantly reduce the risk.

While it’s good to expose the skin to some sunshine for vitamin D, many of us choose to stay outside, soaking up the rays, for far longer than we should. Although sun cream should be worn to protect skin from the sun, other precautions should be taken – wearing sunglasses with UV protection, covering up with loose clothing and a hat and staying out of the sun between 11am – 3pm when the sun is strongest. Unfortunately us Brits rarely get to enjoy warm weather, but when we do, we need to understand why it’s so important to protect our skin. BUYING SUN CREAM You might have a few favourite brands when it comes to sun cream, but packaging and price is never as important as the UV protection they offer. Everyone should wear at least SPF15 in the sun, and look out for UVA protection of 4* or higher. Children and anyone with fair skin should look for SPF50 to protect their skin better. UVB – These rays cause sunburn, and are what the SPF helps to protect against UVA – These rays don’t cause sunburn, but deeply penetrate the skin and cause aging Both UVA and UVB rays can cause skin cancer.

Some sun cream is advertised as ‘water resistant’, but remember that this is different to ‘waterproof’. It simply means that the SPF protection will last a little longer in the water than standard sun cream, but it will eventually wash-off, particularly after drying off with a towel. KEEPING KIDS SAFE Children’s sun cream often has a high SPF and less chemicals than that of regular sun cream, to make it kind to sensitive skin. It can be a challenge to get wriggling, excited kids covered in sun cream, but it should be re-applied regularly throughout the day. Babies under 6 months should be kept out of the sun completely, and children, particularly those with fair skin and freckles, should stay in the shade as much as possible. Swimsuits which cover a lot of the skin are a good idea, as are hats and t-shirts to cover up. Just one painful sunburn at any age can increase a person’s risk of melanoma. APPLYING SUN CREAM Sun cream should be re-applied as regularly as possible, particularly after swimming, regardless of the SPF level. This ensures that if you apply SPF30 at the start of the day, you’ll continue to wear that level of protection throughout if you

Please mention OM Magazine when responding to adverts

keep it topped up. Even once-a-day sun creams should be re-applied. An adult should be looking to use about two tablespoons of sun cream to cover their entire body while wearing a swimming costume. Skin should feel completely covered, almost greasy to touch, not forgetting the tops of the ears, eyelids and feet. A lot of people burn their scalp and hairline in the sun, but you can buy scalp and hair sprays which are usually in the form of a dry oil and can be sprayed directly onto the parting and any other areas exposed to sunlight. This is particularly important for those with red or fair hair, but wearing a hat is an even better option to sunscreen. Stay safe this summer and remember: •

A tan doesn’t provide sun protection

Fair skin is more prone to sunburn, but skin of any colour can be damaged by the sun

Keep out of the sun between 11am - 3pm

UV rays can still get through on a cloudy day

Keep eyes protected with sunglasses which have UV protection

Smoothie

Great Blue Hole, Belize

You might already own a blender, but it’s gathering dust in the kitchen cupboard while you summon the energy and ideas to create a mouth-watering concoction. If not, perhaps you’re thinking of buying one but you’re wondering whether you’d get much use out of it? Below are some simple, yet very tasty recipes to get you inspired and churning out smoothies in no time.

The One Which Wakes You Up in the Morning

The One Which Keeps You Going

The One with Very Few Ingredients

1 frozen, chopped banana 200ml coconut milk 1 shot espresso Tablespoon almond butter

1/2 an avocado 8 strawberries 3 tbsp natural yoghurt 200ml semi-skimmed milk

200ml almond milk Handful frozen mixed berries 1 chopped banana

Make your shot of espresso and leave to cool. Put all ingredients into the blender and mix until smooth.

Put all ingredients into the blender and mix until smooth. Use a small amount of ice to make the smoothie cold if needed.

Put all ingredients into the blender and mix until smooth. Add more almond milk if the smoothie is too thick, or more banana if too watery.

Pop chopped banana into the freezer overnight. It cools the smoothie down without making it watery.

Avocado in this recipe gives the smoothie a buttery, smooth consistency. Add a squeeze of lemon if you wish.

Frozen berries cool the smoothie, but fresh berries can be used with a handful of ice.

Gut Instincts and Your Second Brain We don’t much like talking about our digestion, in fact, even with their doctors, most people find it embarrassing. It’s a cultural thing. In many other cultures a query about your bowel movements is considered a perfectly relevant question when discussing your health or emotional state. By Barbara Burgess

This year I reached the same age that my mother was when she died of bowel cancer so it is not surprising that thoughts of digestive health are in the forefront of my mind. She was a fairly healthy eater, didn’t smoke, or drink much, so I’ve always put this down to be in some way connected with the fact that she was one of life’s worriers. Recent research seems to be showing I might just have a point, although not necessarily quite the way I envisaged it.

and were previously thought to be found only in the brain - that work both independently and together with the brain in your head. The nervous system in your gut is connected to the brain by the vagus nerve, which was thought to send messages from your head to your gut. It has now been found that the messages go both ways, so that your gut health affects your emotional wellbeing. Most of the important chemical messengers, such as dopamine, serotonin, the ‘feel good’ hormones, enkephalins, natural painkillers and benzodiazapines, which are similar to Valium, are also present in the gut.

Your gut health affects your emotional well-being

Scientists are now describing the digestive system as the second brain because it has been discovered that the gut contains around 500 million neurons cells that process and transmit messages

The ‘gut to brain’ signals could explain why fatty foods make us feel good, one of the biggest problems for dieters and comfort eaters. It’s been shown that people are less able to feel sad after they’ve eaten fatty acids! And that feeling of butterflies in your stomach when you’re scared or nervous, the result of blood being diverted away from it to your muscles as part of the ‘fight or flight’ response, can also produce an increase of hormone called ghrelin. This hormone does a few different things: it improves memory and increases

strength and, by stimulating the release of dopamine, it reduces anxiety and depression, but it also makes you feel more hungry. So our modern disease of chronic stress can be directly related to that other modern disease of obesity. The discovery of two-way messaging between the brain and the gut lends much credence to mind/body therapy and goes a long way to explaining why Hypnotherapy is shown to be so successful in the treatment of physical diseases, such as IBS and other bowel disorders, and how it’s success in helping to reduce stress, can have a knock on effect in reducing food cravings, and, as a result, obesity. Science is only just beginning to understand the mind/body connection, but with every discovery it becomes clearer that healthy thoughts produce a healthier body and a healthy body produces a healthier mind.

BUSINESS PROFILE Business and performance coaching has become popular over time in major cities in the UK, and Andrew Holland is bringing Effectus Coaching and Development to the South West. He explains how businesses and individuals can benefit from his coaching, experience and expertise. “It’s important in any business that people address all areas of their life.” Andrew works on, what he calls, “The people element of business coaching” which makes him stand out in this industry. For example, a company might have a sales process which worked at first but is now failing, and Andrew will address the application, rather than the process itself. “I work with people on application, and that can be everything from sales through to customer service, through to time-management, stress management, leadership, management and planning that’s what I do.” Andrew has always had a competitive, can-do attitude, and has been a sportsman all his life.

I started to make the connection between sport and business

“When I was really young my uncle ran a football team, and the team that he ran were a few years older than I was. They were under 13’s, I was about 8 or 9. I used to go training with them and, realistically, the physical difference between those ages is immense, but I used to go every week. I would get in there and every now and again I’d come on as a sub. When I went on as a sub there was always a big reaction from the people stood on the side and I loved it! What that did was create this immense, competitive spirit in me and

One of Andrew’s Expeditions

32 July 2016

I used to love being able to take the ball off the bigger lads. I could compete.” Born and bought up in Warwickshire, Andrew joined the Navy at the age of 17 and spent 26 years working with them as a physical trainer. He was selected early on to play representative sport, and this spurred him on to study for a sports psychology diploma in 1999-2000. “It really started to slot things into place about performance. What I then started to notice was that it wasn’t just about sport - I started to make the connection between sport and business and the way we do it. I was still in the Navy, and the military is all about production, all about efficiency, and all about working together as a team. “This really intrigued me and I began to study the concepts and applications of team and individual development, completing a Certificate in Education; Coaching, Leadership, Management and Development qualifications as well as studying to become a Trainer of Neuro Linguistic Programming and Hypnotherapy and most recently gaining authorisation as a Corporate Plus Coach on the YB12 International Coaching Framework. “Alongside my role as a physical trainer, I also qualified as an Adventure Training Instructor and as a result went away on a

lot of major expeditions. I always had a role in those expeditions developing the teams. The last one I did was a medical services expedition to the Himalayas, and my role was to do all of the training. But it wasn’t just training people to be qualified in the activities, it also involved bringing the teams together, working with teams and looking at configurations of teams, so it was successful. “Out of 45 people who went on the expedition, 38 people stood on top of a 6000 metre plus peak, which, realistically, when we first started, there was only going to be a summit team of about 15. That was down to them and not me, but it was the development process they went through as teams which got them into that mindset of, “We can do it”. “That expedition team is no different to an engineering team, they still have objectives that they want to achieve. Depending how the team gel and work together will depend on the efficiency. If people have investment in them, at a people level, then the people are going to be happier, they’ll be more prepared to produce the goods. Salary is important, but motivation to do a job is a bigger drive than salary once the basic salary needs are met. Businesses keep those people and the productivity goes up. If you can make your workforce feel a part of and fully understand “WHY” you do what you do, they will belong to it, take ownership and go that extra mile to generate success, this makes a huge difference.” Andrew not only works with businesses, he also works with individuals on a more personal level. In the past he’s helped someone start working to overcome their problem with alcohol, and another person had a severe phobia of hospitals, but Andrew worked with her to deal with this and she recently underwent surgery, proving that the coaching had been a huge success. One of his current clients is a professional sportsman from the USA. Back to his business coaching, and he believes that success shouldn’t necessarily be judged by a bank balance. “One of the biggest things is getting people to appreciate that success doesn’t necessarily mean 60 hours a week.” He agrees that sometimes this is unavoidable, particularly for business owners, but it’s

about recognising WHY you’re doing it! “Do I want to work my socks off now, not enjoy my kids growing up and be at loggerheads with my wife? Brilliant, I could retire at 55 and potentially have made a whole heap of money, but at what cost?” Andrew moved to Saltash and spends as much quality time with his 8-year-old twin children and wife, Amanda, as he can. “Who wouldn’t want to live down here? I would never say never to anything, but I cannot see myself going to live back in the Midlands. I love living in the South West, and living where I live in Cornwall, and the fact that within 20 minutes I could be on Dartmoor, or be walking on Whitsand Bay beach. I’ve been all over the world and I’ve never set foot on a beach which has been better than Whitsand Bay. That’s why I want to live down here.” “From a business perspective, doing what I do, I’d be much better living in London if I was judging my success on finance.” But he continues by asking, “Why wouldn’t I want to live down here?” “My goals over the next 12 months are to grow my business in the South West. I want to grow it in and around Plymouth and then spread that out into the South West. Coming from the military, I developed these skills about what to do and how to do it, and the results I’m getting are really good.” Andrew is incredibly passionate about people and helping them to develop themselves. He often hears excuses such as, ‘I can’t do that,’ and ‘That will never happen’.

to look at living life into the future rather than the past, and we will do this by creating a compelling vision together.” Andrew can assist in many areas of a business, which makes it difficult to pinpoint exactly what he does. “There is not one thing that I do, because I work with people.” “It makes a difference in their lives and that’s what I want to do.” Perhaps it’s time to take a step back from your business and your goals and ask yourself, “Why do I do what I do?”

BUSINESS PROFILE Malcolm Harrison is perhaps the most eccentric and unique accountant you’ll ever meet – something which he admits himself. We’re invited into the offices of MH Associates, which sit above the Tudor Rose Tea Rooms on the Barbican in a building which dates back to 1640.

Malcolm pops on a Panama hat, heads outside onto the cobbled street for a few photographs with his team, before we head back up the old staircase to discuss his past and his business. Born in 1951 to a Barbican family, he has plenty to tell us. For over 100 years the family business, Harrison and Sons Ship Chandlers occupied premises on Southside Street, so Malcolm really has brought his business back to his family roots. At school he took an interest in space, becoming president of the Astronomical Society, but then started thinking about a career in teaching. Whilst at Widey Technical School he was the founding member of the National Union of 6th Form Students. He went on to study at St Luke’s College, Exeter, where he became a member of the National Union of Teachers. He then spent ten successful years as

a junior school teacher, first in Hertfordshire and then back in Devon. Eventually he decided to move on from teaching and headed back to his home city where the government helped him to retrain in accountancy and bookkeeping. In 1983 he got a job with British Rail. Not wanting any responsibilities he was quite happy to be a stores clerk working at Laira Depot. But after just a few weeks he was promoted and given more responsibilities, and in 1991 he became the area Materials Manager. As Malcolm tells us his past, it becomes apparent that being a part of various unions is very important to him. Whilst working on the railway he became a union rep for the clerical staff, and he was and still is a member of the Transport Salaried Staffs Association. In 2012 he was given a gold medallion in recognition of his long service which resulted in him being awarded with honorary life membership. He started to develop an NVQ qualification for Storekeepers on the railway and in 1994 an opportunity arose for him to apply for a grant from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust (www.wcmt.org.uk). This was setup as a living memorial to the great leader and each year applications open for particular categories. The grant enables British citizens to travel abroad, research inspiring practices and then bring that knowledge back to the UK for the benefit of others. In that year a Training and Education category was open for applications. Malcolm was keen to head abroad to investigate the training of staff on railways to identify best practices and to bring those practices back home. He decided at the time, “If I don’t apply I’m not going anywhere, if I do apply I

probably won’t get it. But I applied for the trust and I was interviewed. It’s not every day someone hands you £8,000 and tells you to make travel arrangements to travel to Hong Kong and Australia”. Malcolm learnt a lot and avoided hotels so that we could stay with locals and understand their way of life. He discovered that Australia mirrors the UK transport industry, and he took home valuable knowledge and experience to implement at Laira Depot upon his return.

MH Associates offer bookkeeping, accountancy and payroll services to smallmedium businesses - they are a company that really cares about their clients. Treating everyone as he would expect to be treated himself, Malcolm Harrison prides himself on his ability to keep hold of his clients and he makes himself available to meet them at any time of day outside of regular working hours.

He started to develop an NVQ for storekeepers at the railway

Unfortunately he was later made redundant with 50% of the other managers at Great Western Trains when First Group took the company over in 1998. He went to a job centre with his CV, but found it difficult to convince them that he managed a £30 million a year budget. He took up a position within a travel tour agency, and in his spare time he used his previous experience of bookkeeping to help a local accountancy practice. In 1999 the owner of the accountancy practice offered Malcolm the opportunity to become his business partner. The following year he decided to setup business on his own and he formed MH Associates.

www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

- MH ASSOCIATES He started off with a very small clientele and still works with some of those clients today. He has built up his business with over 400 clients, some of which are based overseas and he deals with every single client offering a bespoke service. Every six months he is invited to London to be briefed on the latest changes in tax legislation by Price Waterhouse Cooper, the country’s leading accountancy firm. Malcolm also knows some of the special advisors within Parliament and the House of Lords, and has given advice and information to MP’s in the past.

He deals with every single client offering a bespoke service

“Through being a Winston Churchill fellow I’ve become a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and that’s opened doors to me. I’m in and out of the House of Lords quite a bit”.

As the Queen is patron to the Winston Churchill Trust, Malcolm was invited to meet her in March 2015 on the 50th anniversary of Churchill’s death. He tells us it is customary to accept an invitation from the Queen, so following an email asking if he would be available to meet her, he received his formal invitation in the post which he is currently having framed by a client. Back to his business, Malcolm tells us that “I’ve always had a vision of a onestop-shop. If someone comes into me I’m able to provide them with payroll, self-assessment, you name it I’ll try to do

it”. He describes his business as “generalist”. “95% of my clients I can do everything for, but there’s a small percentage of those where I need to bring in extra expertise”. He uses those around him and their skills to assist him with his business. For example if someone needs pension advice, he knows who he can send them to for help, and he uses solicitors that he works with regularly and can trust. Geoffery Kirk is an Insolvency Practitioner and Chartered Accountant who often works with Malcolm. “I have known Malcolm for a few years now. Every once in a while Malcolm meets a client with insolvency issues and very kindly Malcolm refers them to see me if I can assist. “Malcolm is that rare breed, he puts quality of service and loyalty to his clients above all other issues. I have never known a professional more devoted to his clients and never seen anyone work as hard as he does to achieve the best outcome. “I recall a case where a client had been advised that he had a tax liability approaching £100,000 which HMRC had based upon estimates. HMRC were threatening to bankrupt the client unless he made immediate payment in full. Malcolm was approached by the client for help but the prospects were bleak, the client had no records and could not adequately dispute the HMRC claim. Malcolm contacted HMRC on behalf of the client and asked for time, and he eventually negotiated the liability down to less than £10,000. The client was saved from bankruptcy”. At the moment Malcolm is working on lots of tax returns with the help of his friendly team who have been putting together the data. A few members of staff are even trying to get Malcolm and the offices more organised, but he tells us that he has a

lot more trouble finding things now that everything has a home! With a growing business and hundreds of clients it’s understandable there’s lots of paperwork to file. We finish off by asking Malcolm how he learnt everything he knows. He was trained in accounting and then found himself running a business in the industry with many loyal clients - we’re impressed. “It’s called the University of Life”, he tells us with a smile on his face. “You make mistakes and you learn from those mistakes”. It seems that life experience, wit and a unique personality have brought him very far indeed.

Communication is key during the divorce process

L

ack of communication has been said to be the main reason why a couple separates.

Following a break-up, couples often feel that if only they had been able to talk about their worries and troubles then they may not have split after all. By Anne Shears When going through the divorce process communicating effectively is fundamental, especially where there are children, but it can be difficult to manage. In an ideal world, separated couples would still speak on the phone, or in person, but sometimes this is just too emotionally charged. In those circumstances a text message or email can be useful to keep communication open but it needs to be kept brief, to the point and free from emotion in order to keep dialogue going. Some tips for emails and texts are • Keep them concise and to the point. Try to limit the content to just what you wish to discuss. • Do not be tempted to drag up old disputes or “push buttons”

• Try to include clear questions/suggested arrangements, which will then hopefully promote a clear response. • Take the time you need before you respond to any texts or emails to think through what you want to say. Knee-jerk replies can sometimes not put across exactly what you would have wished or it can be taken in the wrong way. Wherever possible ask friends, family and especially new partners to let you communicate with your former spouse without their influence. Your support network will want to help you and will be fiercely on your side but negative comments or making arguments on your behalf rarely moves you further through the divorce process, which no doubt you will wish to have resolved as quickly as possible.

Remember that your tone of voice is important as you may, by saying something forcefully, come across as being aggressive and cause upset without meaning to do so.

Do not be tempted to use any form of social media to communicate with your former spouse or to make any comment about your personal life. Also, try to explain to your friends and family that any comment they make, however supportive of you or amusing at the time, may inflame an already tense situation which is not helpful in the long- term. Try to speak positively (or at the very least neutrally) about your former spouse especially if your children are in earshot.

Don’t bottle up your emotions and worries; silence breeds suspicion, sadness and resentment. Communicate as best you can as soon as you can and you will move through this difficult experience as quickly and positively as possible.

It is worth remembering that any communication, even if not from you, can be reported to your legal representatives and to the Court, which could increase your legal fees and possibly the length of time your case will take to resolve. If you are one of the separated couples who are able to speak directly then do everything you can to keep that going.

Do you need life insurance? Not everyone needs life insurance (also known as life cover and death cover). But if your children, partner or other relatives depend on your income to cover the mortgage or other living expenses, then the answer is yes – you probably do want life insurance, since it will help provide for your family in the event of your death. What is life insurance? Life insurance can pay your dependants money as a lump sum or as regular payments if you die. It is designed to provide you with the reassurance that your dependents will be looked after if you’re no longer there to provide. The amount of money paid out depends on the level of cover you buy. You can also decide how it is paid out and whether mortgage or rent.

www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk drug or alcohol abuse, and you normally have to pay extra to be covered when you take part in risky sports. If you have a serious health problem when you take out the policy, your insurance may exclude any cause of death related to that illness. You can buy other insurance products for these issues, which cover total and permanent disability, long term illness or critical illness cover.

Do you need it?

There are two main types of life insurance: Term life insurance policies run for a your policy) – such as 5, 10 or 25 years. These kinds of policies only pay out if you die during the policy. There is no lump sum payable at the end of the policy term.

If you have dependants – such as school age children, a partner who relies on your income or a family living in a house with a mortgage that you pay – a life insurance policy can provide for them if you die. You might also want a policy which covers your funeral expenses.

Decreasing term insurance (also known as mortgage protection) Your policy lasts for a pre-agreed number of years, which usually matches the length of your mortgage, and pays out if you die during that time. Each year the potential pay-out decreases as it is designed to be used with a repayment mortgage where the outstanding loan decreases over time. This means that this type of policy is cheaper than a level term insurance.

A whole-of-life policy will pay out no matter when you die, as long as you keep up with your premium payments.

This type of policy is similar to level and decreasing life insurance (see above), except that it pays out a regular income for the remaining term rather than a lump sum. Life insurance only covers death – if you can’t provide for your family because of illness or disability, you won’t be covered.

Starring: Frank Grillo, Elizabeth Mitchell, Mykelti Williamson

This month we see the release of the fifth film in the Bourne series, and the sequel to The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) and The Bourne Legacy (2012). Jason returns unexpectedly following his previous disappearance, and the world is faced with unprecedented instability. As Bourne uncovers hidden truths about his past, he also discovers that a new programme has been created to hunt him down.

The Purge is back on our screens, as we see Leo (Grillo) working as security to protect a new Senator, Charlie (Mitchell), who is the front-runner for the upcoming Presidential election. She’s vowed to eliminate The Purge should she take power, but for the moment Leo must protect her from harm as the annual ritual takes over the city. A betrayal sees them forced out onto the streets with no help available, and they must try to stay alive until dawn.
