Editor's Note... Is summer over already? September means the start of Autumn, although I have memories of being sunburnt this time last year, so perhaps the sunshine won’t be leaving us just yet (we can only hope!) I’m sure that many kids are excited about going back to school. The new year is always fun, particularly if they’ve stocked up on shiny, new stationary! Or maybe you have more grown-up children who are starting university, and we wish them all the best with their studies. Check out page 30 for our tips on how to prepare. And for the rest of us, it’s business as usual! We need to enjoy the last of the light evenings and watch as leaves begin to turn on the trees. Here at OM, we think it’s a rather beautiful time of year. We’ve been spoilt with events in Plymouth over the last few months, but it doesn’t end here. It’s time for the Ocean City Festival and there are many fun events happening over the course of two weeks. See page 22 for some of our highlights. We hope that you enjoy our September issue!

Feng Shui Your Home Feng Shui is a Chinese discipline which can be traced back several thousands of years. It’s the art of placement – the idea that the careful positioning of objects and the things around you can help to channel positive energy. The Feng Shui Society describes it as, “The art and science of designing harmonious environments based on the profound Chinese understanding of how people are connected to and affected by their close surroundings.” The discipline has become popular in modern times, but in the past it would help identify safe places for families to live, and choose the best burial sites for the deceased. Over the years, buildings and even entire cities in China have been designed with Feng Shui in mind. Feng means wind, and Shui means water in English. The perfect balance of these creates harmony which is where Yin and Yang come in. The Yin-Yang symbol is a popular one but one many of us don’t understand. It symbolises balance between two opposites. This could be dark and light, movement and stillness, etc., and there should never be too much of one or the other.
Plants represent growth, prosperity and luck according to Chinese tradition. Rounded leaves have a calming effect, while plants pointing upwards encourage a boost to succeed – pop one on the desk if you’re growing a business or looking to ace an exam.
Another basic concept is Qi. This is the energy generated by thoughts, emotions, water flow, air quality and colour, and these forces influence how a place and its inhabitants feel. Then there are the five elements – water, wood, fire, earth and metal. These can be physical or metaphoric and can be used in various ways to influence their surroundings. Why should the principles of Feng Shui be implemented at home? It’s used to increase wealth, improve health and relationships and protect against misfortune. It can bring happiness and energy and make those living there feel comfortable, settled and closer with nature.
Avoid sharp corners. Rounded, soft shapes are more harmonious.
The entrance of your home is where positive energy can flow in. If you use a side or back door as opposed to the front door, try to change this so that energy flows into the home correctly. Keep it clutter free, and make it look inviting with plants and a clean doormat. Good light and a clear door number will encourage positivity, ensuring that people can find your home easily.
Keep the space under the bed clear to allow air and energy to flow beneath you while you sleep. 10 September 2016
Call OM Plymouth 01752 691007
www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk
Consider the connotations of a colour before splashing it onto the walls. Yellow may seem sunny and bright, but it’s far too harsh for a bedroom. Blue is soothing, and green is healing – nature’s colours will make you feel more relaxed.
Water means wealth – good water brings it in, bad water takes it out. Fountains should always run and sinks should have a plant next to them. The drain symbolises wealth leaving the home, and the plant (a wood element) balances this. If you live by a river or stream, it shouldn’t run behind the home as it symbolises missed opportunities, nor should it flow away from the home as it’s a sign of loss. Instead, it should run at the front of the house, in full-sight of the front door.
Keep electronics out of the bedroom. If you must keep a television in there, keep it far away from the bed and drape a pretty scarf or piece of fabric over it when not in use. Please mention OM Magazine when responding to adverts

BUSINESS PROFILE Refurnish is changing the face of second-hand furniture shops, benefiting the environment, the volunteers and employees, and the customers. We speak with David, Chief Executive, about the charity and the fantastic things they do. Second-hand furniture isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but for many it’s a lifeline when an empty house needs furnishing on a near-empty wallet. ReFurnish has branches dotted around Devon, all within easy reach of Plymouth, and their warehouses are brimming with goods which are available to all. At the Wrangaton branch we met David, who is the Chief Executive of the charity, and he was keen to show us around. The warehouse is full with unwanted sofas, beds and wardrobes, with a treasure trove of clothes, trinkets, records and bikes stretching across the back wall under a mezzanine floor. Everything is donated and for sale at very affordable prices – one price is standard, another is at a discount for anyone with proof of low income or benefit. Many sofas cost less than £30. People in need may also be referred by the local council through crisis funds, but helping those struggling to make a house a home isn’t the charity’s only objective.
“

You’re helping the environment by reusing things instead of buying things new
“You’re helping the environment by reusing things instead of buying things new, and you’re also helping to create employment and volunteer opportunities,” David explains. Proceeds from sales helps the charity

reason to get up in the mornings and get out of the house.
A lot of furniture and other unwanted household goods end up at landfill, and most of it is in great, reusable condition, but ReFurnish will collect items for free. They will then be bought and reused in a loving home, usually by a family who will really appreciate your donation.
“In an ideal world I would like to get the elderly involved because they have valuable skills and experience that they could share with younger volunteers.”
Another important objective for David is offering volunteering and job opportunities to those who would benefit. “It’s really hard for people who don’t have much confidence or support needs to find something to do where they feel comfortable. I’ve worked with a lot of people who find going out the door to be intimidating. I am aware of the issues faced by people who experience social exclusion, depression, mental ill-health, learning disabilities or loneliness and need a

“If people want to volunteer they can call the head office or their local branch, then they would come in for a chat with the manager of that shop, followed by an application form and see how they can help. If somebody can only manage a few hours a week initially, that’s fine, although we also welcome people who can commit regularly for longer periods. “I am currently working on a funding bid to develop a furniture upcycling and repair workshop so we can help people increase their feeling of wellbeing whilst learning new skills in a more structured way than our current smaller workshops.” David has a background in accounts, teaching, youth and community and care work, which helps him to manage his team of volunteers at ReFurnish. “I was previously working in the care

industry for about 12 years, and although, people were housed, had money and were receiving medication, they were often spending their days staring at the walls. To have a chance of getting well people need something meaningful to do.” For David, helping people into work and reducing waste to landfill is a brilliant and rewarding combination. He’s put a lot of effort into securing funding to improve the charity further, and those efforts continue to this day. Also Refurnish is planning to increase their branches especially north of Devon to create greater economies of scale and reduce the gaps between branches for easier sharing of resources. To help the developments mentioned, Refurnish is seeking volunteers with suitable skills to be Trustees and strengthen the board of the charity. In Dartington you’ll find The ReSTORE, which is a project combining the skills of local upcycling artists and volunteers to recreate and rejuvenate donated furniture and goods. These items can then be sold in the shop for a better price which goes back into the charity. Drop-in sessions include furniture repair, upholstery, wild weaving and looming, and David is looking to spread upcycling to other branches. Upcycling is the art of increasing the value of something by
transforming it, usually by sanding wood, using paint, varnishing and re-building. “Once again it’s all mixed objectives. What we want to do is take things that people don’t want, and repair and remake it into something new to sell, giving it a new life. At the moment most of the donations we take are put straight into the warehouse for sale, but we’d like to spend time on the furniture and make other things with it.” There is a constant flow of items coming and going at the warehouse, with vans running from the Wrangaton branch four
days a week. David tells us though that they’re often short of chests of drawers and bookshelves, simply because they’re so popular. “It’s totally unpredictable what we get in and what’s in demand. “Our Crediton branch has had various interesting donations such a leather World War II flying helmet with goggles. “I once found an oil painting that someone put in the scrap because it had a rip in it, but I put it into auction and got £80 for it. And in Dartington they found a picture that had another picture underneath it, and that sold at auction too.” It seems that if you love a good treasure hunt, ReFurnish could be a great place to visit. The bric-a-brac is stacked high, and something which someone else has given away could be something you love. We spotted antique Singer sewing machines, delicate decorative bowls and skirts made with Liberty of London fabric during our visit. If you’re after something on a larger scale and need to furnish a home, there’s plenty to suit every taste and budget. From brightly painted shelving units, to hefty wooden beds and drinks cabinets, these warehouses hold everything you might need.
The Wrangaton branch is open Tues - Sat, 9am to 5pm. Leisure & Events
Ronan Keating It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Ronan Keating, but he’s not keeping quiet for much longer. He’s been busy working on his brand new album, Time of my Life, and a lot has changed since his Boyzone days, with 40 millions album sales under the Irish band’s belt.
The songs are of celebration, emotion, love and loss and honesty, and all are written with live performance in mind. This bold chapter comes from his new record label, Decca, as he becomes completely content in the music he’s created and wears his tunes on his sleeve. He’s preparing now for his huge tour, and Plymouth is lucky enough to be his first stop… How long did it take you to put together your Time of my Life? It’s the longest I’ve ever taken to make a record. I spent the whole of 2015 writing it which was a very organic process and I wore my heart on my sleeve. I put a lot of time into this album, a whole year when normally it normally takes three or four months.
It sounds like she’s a really talented lady! Has she changed the way you work and your outlook on your career? She means a lot to me. She gave me the power to do something like I am now and gave me strength and confidence.
“
“
Now the 38-year-old is pushing on with his new endeavours, with the encouraging support of his kids and talented wife. The album has a different sound to what his audience may used to hearing – his appearance in London’s West End stage musical, Once, got Ronan hands-on with an acoustic guitar, and listeners will be able to hear it in his new music.
to come. It’s taken me a long time to get here, but I’m very proud of it. You manage new artists and work on The Voice, Australia, is there any particular qualities you look for in new performers?
This is the proudest I’ve ever been about an album!
Yes I just did The Voice, Australia, and got back three days ago but I really enjoyed it out there. There are lots of things I look for and I try to find it in people, and if I can’t find it I create it.
Time of my Life sounds really different to what your fans might be used to hearing – what inspired you?
So you’re acting, working on TV, managing artists and developing new music – it doesn’t sound like you get much free time! What do you get up to when you get some down-time?
It was my time on the show, Once, that inspired me. Playing guitar and singing and acting all night for shows in the West End created the sound of this album, and it’s very organic with a storytelling feel. This is the proudest I’ve ever been about an album! You seem to be really excited by the whole process of putting the album together, so do you think it’s something you’ll be doing again in the future? I’m quite excited about the next album
You’ve performed in about 50 countries over the years – is there one you’d particularly like to go back to with your new album? I’m going everywhere on this tour! We start in South Africa, then to Scandinavia, then Europe and the UK and Ireland, then Berlin, New Zealand and Asia. I can’t wait to go to Ireland!
I don’t get much down time. Sometimes it’s great to be busy but I’m sure in a few months I’ll be ready for a holiday! Next year I want to take my guitar and travel a bit. Plymouth is the first stop for the UK leg of your tour, how are you feeling about it? I’m looking forward to the show. There will be something for everybody with a mix of old and new songs.

Your wife features on a couple of tracks which is really special, but has she ever done anything like it before? My wife features in two of my songs - she co-wrote one of them and then did backup vocals in another which is brilliant. My wife did singing when she was younger but this just happened by accident. I was in the kitchen writing and she was singing, having a bit of fun, and I said ‘Why don’t we do something with this and get it out there and get you on the album?’

When MTV Crashed Plymouth
Credit: One Plymouth / Plymouth City Council
Y
es…. MTV definitely ‘crashed’ Plymouth in 2016 with descriptive words such as ‘insane’ and ‘sick’ (extremely positive apparently) coming from the youngsters, whilst ‘absolutely brilliant’ were the words spoken by the rest of us!
Radio Plymouth was delighted to be involved in the event once again and we started ‘geeing’ our listeners up in preparation back in March when the first round of our four website competitions to win tickets to MTV Crashes went live – and the first winners secured their tickets. Radio Plymouth teamed up with Skills Group who sponsored dual branded ‘glow in the dark’ wrist bands for the event. These were handed out to the crowds across both nights by our delightful and energetic Lighthouse Crew! We would imagine that many of those wristbands will become treasured memorabilia of the night and kept for years in various shoe boxes under West Country beds!! Radio Plymouth’s listening demographic is between 25 and 54 but when it comes to promotions like these where precious tickets are up for grabs, the demographic of entrants grow vastly, either with younger listeners getting involved or older parents and grandparents entering to win tickets for their kids or even themselves, and why not? It’s a great family event and Plymouth must be very proud to host it, for both its own community and for the visitors it draws in. We caught up with one of our younger ticket winners, Meg from Ivybridge. She
18 September 2016
gave us her thoughts on the night: “MTV Crashes is such an amazing event! It has a little bit of something for every age! ‘Day time acts’ is the perfect opportunity to grab a drink and some food and appreciate the talent on stage. My favourite late afternoon act was Jonas Blue. He created this fantastic Radio Plymouth’s Jane Atwill, Laura Goodchild, Charlotte Adams, atmosphere where Jemma Jones & Hayley Bowden everyone was put in high spirits, dancing and singing away. “It was also brilliant to see other star acts like Rudimental, Jess Glynne, Example and Tough Love. I found the huge crowd fun, approachable and friendly as, like me, they were there to enjoy the music and have an amazing time! I’d definitely recommend this event to everyone!” MTV Crashes 2016 was even bigger and better than its previous 2 years and we are already stamping our feet in preparation for MTV Crashes 2017! Can it get any better? We can’t wait to find out.

great contacts within the industry, and knows exactly what it takes to satisfy those seeking work, as well as establishments seeking staff. Next Generation Education are currently advertising various roles for nursery staff, SEN support workers and primary/secondary school teachers. They believe that these people will all play a vital role in developing and educating the next generation. They understand that parents want senior staff to care about children as individuals and have great pleasure in seeing the candidates they put forward go on to be successful.
Inspire, Influence & Improve The Lives Of Children Education, Education, Education. A familiar and iconic line for one particular politician. Whether you feel this message was adequately delivered is a matter of opinion, but what is for definite, is that the sentiment still rings true, because every parent wishes the best education possible for their children. To ensure local education is helping to inspire, influence and improve the lives of children – you need talented teachers and support staff. One local recruitment agency, who launched earlier this year, is determined to attract the crème de la crème of education professionals whilst also helping to kick-start the career of graduates who have just finished studying. The Next Generation Education brand launched in June 2016 by city entrepreneur and owner of the Talem Recruitment Group, Donna Barnes. Its main aim is to provide a diverse range of educational settings with full access to a talent pool of professionals. This spans from nursery staff right up to primary and secondary school teachers. Next Generation Education are currently seeking teachers, teaching assistants, support workers, nursery staff and child carers. The group has already built fruitful partnerships with local schools and child care providers, and plans to continue building upon their presence through the acquisition of further skilled professionals who share a passion for education.
Improving The Career Horizons For Professionals
Whether it’s at nursery, primary or secondary school level - how warm, friendly and supportive the establishment is and how it approaches education, remains the biggest priorities for parents. Next Generation Education acknowledge this importance and make it their mission to not only place great workers but provide great human beings too, people that value learning and development, and can guarantee a safe and comfortable environment for children to flourish.
Looking For A Role In Education? Although the Next Generation Education team have stabilised a presence in the Plymouth area they are determined to attract more professionals. Whether experienced or recently graduated, they want to hear from you! The group are confident that they can improve the career options of anyone working in education. Let’s inspire, influence and improve together.
For a chance to meet the team, discuss your dreams and find the best job for you – why not contact katy@nged.com or call 01752 229925!
Hiring Now! Are you a teacher or a nursery worker? Do you have experience working in the educational sector or are you about to finish your training/studies?
A recent poll by TES (Times Educational Supplement) reports that in the past year there’s been an 82% rise in teachers feeling more stressed, which could result in them leaving their profession. Despite much of this being reflective of larger classes and overwhelming workloads - influenced by squeezed budgets across UK schools, it’s still a statistic that Next Generation Education are keen to address. By solely concentrating on the education sector, the brand feels that it can offer a greater understanding of the marketplace, discover opportunities that are better suited for individuals and supply the ample amount of support that education professionals deserve.

Could you Foster to Adopt?
We are urgently looking for families to adopt babies through this process. Families for Children have always specialised in placing the most vulnerable children with secure and loving adoptive families. We are currently looking for families to adopt babies and very young children through the Fostering to Adopt program. Fostering to Adopt helps prevent delay for babies by being placed with Adoptive families sooner and therefore prevents unnecessary moves in and out of foster care this in turn provides consistent care for the child and reduces possible future harm and it supports the child in developing healthy attachments.

Student halls and houses aren’t immune to flooding and fires, and those without insurance could lose everything should the worst happen. Endsleigh is reccomended by most universities as they’re tailored specifically for students. Check out their gadget bundles, and they have options to add on extras such as instruments and sports equipment.
They might help out around the house, but would you trust your teenager with your washing? Student halls will have a laundrette and there will be washing machines in shared houses, but a lot of students start university without the knowledge of how to do their washing properly. To avoid them sleeping in the same bedding all year or having more clothes in the wash basket than in the wardrobe, teach them a few simple lessons:
SET UP A STUDENT BANK ACCOUNT It’s important for students to set up a student account, rather than continue with their regular current account. Fees are much lower, the banks are generally kinder and there are often freebies involved.
• • • •
How to split clothes into whites, darks and colours What can and can’t be tumble dried How to wash delicates How to use detergent and fabric softener
Tip: Pack them an airer for hanging wet clothes to dry
Remember, it’s okay for a student to use their overdraft facility, as long as they use it wisely. Student accounts are the only type of account to offer fee free and interest free overdrafts, so students won’t pay back more than they borrowed. This facility usually lasts for a few years after graduation to give them time to pay it back, before regular fees and interest rates start to apply again. Some of the best deals this year: Santander - free 4-year railcard to save money on train fares HSBC - £60 Amazon voucher, up to £3,000 overdraft limit and they won’t allow you to go over your set limit (no scary fees) Natwest - free 4-year National Express coachcard

STUDENT EATING HABITS Your teenager could be a fantastic cook, in which case, you have little to worry about when it comes to them eating at university. However, some students have trouble boiling an egg. Make sure that they know all the basics before they head off - baking potatoes, easy pasta sauces, quick and simple meals, freezing and defrosting food and cooking on a budget. Take them on their first food shop. This is easiest on the day you help them move in because they’ll start getting to know their local supermarket. You might want to spoil them but try to avoid doing so - teach them clever budgeting tricks. Check out Asda’s Student Shopper Cards. You keep one and your son/daughter keeps the other. When you top it up the balance transfers to the student card for them to spend in-store. You’ll know how much is being spent and won’t worry that they’re going without food.
LEAVING THEM TO IT
STUDENT LOAN TALK
It would be very tempting to invite your child home everytime they call and sound a bit panicked, but they need to settle. Heading home every weekend will only mean that they miss out on important bonding time with new friends. If they really are floundering, a visit home wouldn’t be a problem, but remind them that you’re only ever a phonecall away and sometimes that can relax a homesick student just as much.
Hopefully your son/daughter has been through the entire process of applying for student loans and are awaiting their first payment. Many quickly forget that this amount needs to last them until the new year. If your child is receiving the full amount available, it will need to cover their rent and food for around four months, so teach them to put aside enough to keep a roof over their head and food in the kitchen so that they can see how much they have leftover for spending.
On the other hand, don’t be surprised if you rarely get a call in those first weeks. The most outgoing students will dive into university life with ease and will be busy exploring their new home. When you say goodbye after moving them in, try not to show it if you’re upset. Your teenager might be doing a good job of holding it together but could crumble at the sight of their mum in tears. Others could be quite happily ushering you out of the door, keen to get comfortable and meet their flat/housemates.
If you’re supporting your child financially, transfer money regularly and of a certain amount. Remember, they’re studying most days, probably won’t eat like a king and student bars often charge only around £2 a drink. Teach them to budget by only sending them the money they need. It may be tempting to step in when problems arise, but these money lessons will stay with them for life.

What Options Do I Have With My Final Salary Pension Scheme? By Mike LeGassick
F
irst of all, let me say that final salary pension schemes offer excellent indexed linked benefits for life and should never be transferred out on a whim without good reason and detailed advice. But a lucky few could be about to become the source of new-found jealousy among the “gold-plated” pension community. This is because when it comes to asking their scheme if they can take a “transfer value” for their pension – instead of waiting and taking the pension itself – some people are being offered far more money than others. And this is the case even where similar levels of pension income have been promised. The issue is hugely important right now, as some pension savers look to take advantage of the new access rules that came into effect last year. These will allow “money purchase”, also known as “defined contribution”, pension savers to access their cash at once from age 55. But savers with final salary schemes could access their benefits in cash form only if they first request a transfer value and move the money. Calculations based on real transfer values requested by employees are showing employers offering anything between 16 and 70 times the pension they were going to receive from their employer. Generally speaking, the bigger your employer, the more generous your transfer value is likely to be. Large financial companies, banks and insurance companies tend to offer the best transfer values. Big airlines and telecoms businesses are also offering generous-looking deals, as well as oil
companies and other non-financial FTSE 100 companies. Some firms are prepared to offer such generous transfer values that if savers took the cash and invested it, they would not need to achieve very high investment returns in order to obtain the same benefits as originally promised, but only many years earlier. “Unfunded” public sector pensions, such as the NHS, Firefighters, Teachers and Armed Forces schemes, stopped letting people transfer out after April 6 2015. How do companies calculate how much cash you’ll get? The transfer value is supposed to be the amount that your employer has put aside to pay for your benefits when you reach 60 or 65. Pension schemes consider factors such as whether you have a spouse or partner named on the policy, and your age. They then use a process called “discounting” to work out the “present-day” value of your benefits, using assumptions about investment returns and future inflation, among other factors. The reason some companies are offering more generous transfer values than others is that some have adjusted their calculations to reflect current low interest rates, whereas others haven’t. How to tell if you’ve been offered a good deal To calculate your multiple, you need to divide the transfer value by the annual
income in today’s money. You should be able to work this out from your statement. Multiples will vary depending on your age, when the pension starts and how generous pension increases are, up to retirement age and in payment. If you are relatively young, your transfer value could be lower than an older person’s and still represent good value. This is because you have longer to invest and can afford to take more risk. What happens to my pension when I die? After you die, most final salary pension schemes will only pay half of the pension you were receiving to your spouse until they die or a qualifying dependent child no longer becomes dependent. If you have neither of these then the pension dies with you. So if you stay in the final salary scheme, your family would inherit considerably less than if you had personal pensions. Under the new Personal Pension Freedom rules if you die before 75 then your spouse or children will inherit all of your pension tax free. If you die after 75, which I guess is the plan, then they will still inherit all of the money, but they may pay some tax if they are a tax payer when they choose to access the money, but the wealth stays under your roof until it is all gone. Be very wary of anyone calling you unsolicited offering you a deal on your pension that seems too good to be true. There are many scams going on at the moment because of the new pension freedom rules. Please give me a call to discuss your options.

BUSINESS PROFILE Barry W.P. Bennett & Sons is the successful Yelverton based branch working with Raymond James Investment Services Ltd. We speak to Barry Bennett about his past, his business, his family, and the future... Just five minutes into a conversation with Barry Bennett, and we already understand how important the family is to the continued growth and future success at Barry WP Bennett & Sons. Based in a bright office in Yelverton on the beautiful Moors, the whole family help him run their bespoke Private Client Investment Management and Financial Planning business with the back-office regulatory, research, IT and compliance support provided by Raymond James Investment Services Ltd. At the core of their philosophy and their purpose is looking after their private clients, small businesses, charities and trusts to consistently earn more from their investments. Barry explains: “We combine personal, tailored bespoke, integrated financial planning with quality, blended, global, ‘total return’, diversified ‘in house’ investment management service to align our client’s money with the outcomes they are seeking for an ‘off-the-peg price’”. Barry is finding that “increasing the clients’ retirement income is the most common theme at present in an environment where deposits interest rates are lower than ever.” This is now their target market and the current area of greatest demand of enquiries for their services from those individuals either planning for or already in retirement.
“
“
We give a bespoke, quality service for an off-the-peg price
The essential part of their process is their friendly ongoing client engagement which they find helps their clients evolve greater confidence to what is possible with their money. Barry says about an often ‘hidden benefit’ on the added value of professional advice is that: “Interestingly we have found from client feedback a positive intangible beneficial sideeffect is a significant improvement in the general ‘peace of mind’ and ‘sense of well-being’ in their attitude and confidence towards their own money. Surprisingly this contrasts with their earlier feelings which were an odd combination of concern, uncertainty, mystery, worry and even with some elements of guilt with their attitude towards their own money in that they suspected and felt that they were not making the best use of their own money in terms of their outcomes and the impact on their own ‘quality of life’.”
The core investment outcomes they provide for these clients in retirement are driven by 3 investment priorities to provide outcomes which:
Hence they are continually looking to meet and advise discerning individuals who are serious about seeking improvement in their ‘quality of life’ in putting in place a ‘Way Forward’ with a long term strategic plan to optimise their money to align with their chosen outcomes.
• Monthly pay out on 5% per annum income of assets held • Preserve capital value over the long term • Look to grow capital value over the long term to hedge against long-term inflation
Barry is well experienced and qualified to offer professional advice being both a Chartered Financial Planner, the industry “gold” standard, a Stockbroker (aka “The Dartmoor Stockbroker”) and a Chartered Wealth Manager. He is a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society as well as a

These events have a dual purpose of acting as ‘an existing client appreciation and update day’ as well as promoting ourselves to new potential clients and local fellow professional connections. Separating when you have older children
E
veryone knows that separating when you have children is tough. Who tells them, how do you tell them? Is there a better time to tell them, in the morning, in the evening, during the school holidays? Do children react differently at different ages? You could argue that a younger child might handle separation and divorce better, as they are able to adapt quicker to the new situation. But how does separation affect older children? This is a tough question to answer, because every child is different. Teenagers, however, are going through immense change in their own lives. Their bodies are changing and their brains are developing. Emotions are all over the place. School has become more intense, with important exams looming, GCSEs or A Levels. The last thing a teenager needs is for the one stability in their life, their parents’ relationship, to fall apart. Teenagers are more on the ball than young children in terms of seeing through a situation. If one parent has embarked on an affair, for example, a teenager may well have picked up the undercurrents already. This acuity does work in a positive way, too. Teenagers may have been aware for some time of the cracks in their parents’ relationship. So a discussion about separation might come as no surprise. The teenage daughter of one friend had actively been looking up houses to buy for her mum, some months before the subject was raised! If you are the parent of teenagers, what do you need to think about if you are considering separation?
38 September 2016
Do you stay together for the sake of the children, their emotional stability and their education – maintaining the family structure for security? Or do you believe it will be better for everyone concerned, in the long run, if you and your partner separate? There’s no easy answer to that, of course. At the end of the day a sterile atmosphere with estranged parents trying to rub along can be as difficult as the shock of a separation. If there’s another person involved, the teenagers may find themselves keeping secrets to protect their mother or father. If you do decide to separate, the absolute key is to try to keep clear of the ‘blame’ culture. As hard as this is, if your children are the most important thing in your life, it will make sense. Don’t ask a child to choose which parent they love the most – they won’t be able to. Stay amicable, if at all possible. Unless there are very good reasons, don’t make it difficult for the other parent to have access to their child, it will backfire on you. As carefully as you handle it, you may have to bear the brunt of anger, tears, criticism, coldness. Even in current
Call OM Plymouth 01752 691007
society, the image of a happy, ‘normal’ family unit remains a strong one, although this is gradually changing. It’s important that you don’t have a tantrum yourself if the teens kick up. Remember that you are the grown up here. This might be a time to keep your own tears for private, or for times when you are with your close friends. The adult needs to be strong and offer stability, even if it is thrown back in their face. No one is kidding you that this will be easy, but teenagers are young adults. They can adapt and they will, at some point, be able to understand that you are allowed to have your own happiness.
