Editor's Note... It’s April already! I can’t be the only one who thinks this year is absolutely flying by?! Although we have a few more chilly days ahead, the longer and lighter evenings are definitely something to be happy about. Did you know April is National Autism Awareness Month? At OM we felt it was important to highlight this. You can read our double page spread, where we talk to proud mother Judi Armstrong, and outline some key facts about the condition. April also brings National Pet Month! so obviously we used this as an excuse to get in a few pictures of our pets here at the office! Turn to page 36 to read about the charities aims.

As always, we’ve been busy this issue speaking to lots of fantastic, local businesses. We sit down with Shane and Tracy at K9 Meals on Wheels and hydrotherapy (and had cuddles with puppy Jay!) We also visit Steve and Wendy at Plymouth Garden Machinery to see where it all began, and have a chat with Ashley Ward at Swaye Electrical Services.

April 2017 09

BUSINESS PROFILE Plymouth Garden Machinery is a family-run business dedicated to the sale, service and repair of garden machinery in Plymouth, the South Hams, West Devon and East Cornwall. We speak to the owners, Steve Aldridge and Wendy Jones to find out more..

Steve initially acquired ‘PS Garden Machinery’ from its founder, Peter Sherrell, who had been running the business for more than 20 years from premises at Leyford Parks in Staddiscombe, soon changing the name to ‘Plymstock Garden Machinery’– an easy enough transition! Steve worked alongside Peter for a period of time and officially took over in late 2012. The business had a loyal clientele for machinery servicing and repairs but Steve saw the opportunity for growth, “The unit was in a rural location near Staddiscombe, and although it had a loyal customer base, the business was not selling any machinery to speak of”. Steve saw the opportunity, and quickly branched out into sales, securing a local dealership agreement with Global Garden Products (GGP), the European leader in the production and distribution

of lawnmowers and powered garden equipment who just happen to have their HQ in Plympton! Through its brands, GGP stands for high-quality and cutting-edge innovation and technology, with over 90 years of expertise in the field. As a result, Steve was able to stock products from renowned brands Mountfield and Stiga. This was a great start and subsequently further dealership agreements have been secured with Maruyama, Webb, Flymo and most recently Husqvarna, the latter of which enables the business to offer safety equipment and workwear too. The business also now supplies environmentally-friendly Aspen fuels as well as Henchman’s safe and versatile tripod ladders and platforms. However, running a business isn’t always easy! One particularly cold and damp winter the roof blew off the Staddiscombe property during high winds, causing all manner of problems for the business. Then, in 2014, the business suffered the first of two break ins, the thieves cutting the steel doors off the front of the property, as well as breaking the lock but only taking a few machines and tools. The second break in just before Christmas 2015 was, unfortunately, much more serious. This time the thieves stole almost everything, even the CCTV system! Fortunately, the business was able to survive but the thefts inspired Steve to move the business to a

more secure setting. With increased machinery sales, the business had insufficient space at the Leyford Parks premises anyway and in the Spring of 2016, through Wendy’s commercial property experience, Steve found a larger and more suitable unit in Plympton, located at 62 Valley Road Business Park. In recognition of the move from PL9 to PL7, the growth of the business and his aspirations for the future, the business was then re-named to the now more appropriate ‘Plymouth Garden Machinery’. Wendy says “The move has delivered several benefits, including an increase in passing trade and more comfortable working conditions for Steve and Tris, but also the problem that some longstanding clients who visit maybe only once a year didn’t realise they had moved!”

S

teve Aldridge has always had a fascination with machines and anything mechanical. Having spent 22 years as a Royal Engineer in the army, run a clock repairing business in Thirsk, and taught building maintenance and motorcycle engineering to inmates for HM Prison Service, Steve finally gave in to his desires and now owns Plymouth Garden Machinery, a Plympton-based family business committed to providing a great service to its customers every day.

We’re big enough to cope, but small enough to care!

PLYMOUTH GARDEN MACHINERY

As a business, Plymouth Garden Machinery seeks to differentiate itself from competitors by focusing upon the needs and interests of each and every customer. Steve says they endeavour to cater for every gardening machinery requirement, from the repair of the smallest strimmer for domestic users, to servicing and maintenance of ride-on mowers and commercial equipment for country estates, tree surgeons and landscapers. From blade sharpening, repairs to cut cables

and broken switches, to major equipment overhauls, Steve says “Everyone’s welcome, and there’s no job too small! We appreciate business from all clients”.

More recently, Steve’s partner Wendy, who has a background in finance and business administration, retired from her finance firm and sold half of her other business, ‘Adams&Co’, a business transfer agency based in Elburton, to free up time to help Steve manage the growing business, lending her expertise and commercial knowledge to help the company reach new heights.

A properly set up machine will give you the best result, save you time, and will have a longer life!

Plymouth Garden Machinery offers free advice regarding the most appropriate machine to suit each garden, and guidance including demonstrations for clients enabling them to make the most of the equipment, safely and efficiently, even disposing of the packaging! If you are unable to find a particular product or brand on their website, Steve will endeavour to obtain it for you. Plymouth Garden Machinery doesn’t always seek to compete head on with

internet operators but to provide ‘best overall value’, because the service Steve and Tris provide cannot compare: “If customers buy online, the machine arrives in a box, they then have to put it together, and if there is a problem they’ve got to send it back. Our price includes assembly, testing the product to ensure it’s in working order, delivery and where required a demonstration of how to use it safely and how to maintain it!” The future of the business is looking bright, with further plans to expand the selection of products available, alongside increasing the showroom space, and potentially even hiring more staff! Steve states: “We’re hoping to expand; we may look into hiring another engineer and possibly a delivery driver.” Plymouth Garden Machinery offers a free local collection and delivery service: “We go as far East as Slapton, as far west as Helston in Cornwall, and the furthest we’ve gone south is Portugal!” Fortunately, their payment options include American Express, perfect for any gardeners who love to travel!

BUSINESS PROFILE We speak to Ashley Ward, the owner of Swaye Electrical Services to find out more about his background and how his business has grown.

When Ashley was 16, he didn’t really know what he wanted to do. He went through the motions and took three A levels; Art, Psychology and Spanish. When he turned18, he started to think about his future. “My granddad was an electrician and a real grafter. Me and my two brothers spent a lot of time with him growing up, he was a great role model. After, much needed advice from family members, I decided I wanted to follow in his footsteps. It was a choice I took very seriously. It was then when I applied for an apprenticeship at City College Plymouth”. Ashley was lucky enough to go for the interview and get the position a week before the college term started. “I would have had to wait another year if I missed the opportunity”. Ashley started his 4 year long apprenticeship with Koehler Electrical Services and covered a wide variety of work. Ashley tells us they covered every type of electrical installation there is - from domestic and commercial to residential and industrial, gaining knowledge and experience in door entry systems, fire alarms, CCTV, intruder alarms and 3 phase installations.

‘The electricians that taught me were old school, they were really switched on. No pun intended!” Ashley tells us that the electricians he worked with were very particular and it was always completed to a very high standard, which was a good grounding for him to have so early on. At the time of his apprenticeship, Ashley was just a regular 18 year old living at home with his mum. “I started on £2.35 an hour. That was regular apprenticeship wage back then, and I was on £10 more a week than some of the other guys!” 3 years in, Ashley was amongst the top in his class in college and was quickly gaining on site experience and by his final year he was running multiple large scale 50 Kilowatt solar installations in Cornwall. “I was thrown a bit in the deep end, but I just had to crack on”. Because Ashley was so determined to succeed, he managed to complete his apprenticeship in only 3 and a half years. His hard work and enthusiasm was duly noticed by the College, who awarded him with The Apprentice of the Year Award. At the age of 22, he was a qualified Electrician with 4 years of experience under his belt. “Once you finish, your employer either rates you and keeps you on, or gets rid of you and takes on another apprentice”. His employer decided to keep Ashley on, and he became a full time electrician. Ashley stayed with KES until he was 24 years old. By this time, he had decided that he wanted to give it a go on his own. “I was quite an important member of the team and I was doing a lot of hours- we once topped 90 hours in one week!” Because of this, Ashley had no time to build his own client base, so decided to leave after two years. After his time at KES, Ashley then went on to work for SSI; another Plymouth based Electrical Services Business. He joined in

16 April 2017

Call OM Plymouth 01752 691007

2014 and stayed with them for around a year. “SSI was inadvertently a move which allowed me enough time to build my own client base”. Ashley made the move to go self employed when he was 25 years old. He tells us that his first year of business wasn’t necessarily tough- because he had worked so hard previously to build up his clientele. “There were a few days where I would worry, and then the work would come flooding in again.”

A

shley Ward is 27 years old. He is the owner of Swaye Electrical Services, he owns his own home, is getting married next summer, and has a baby on the way. This is a massive achievement in such a short space of time for someone of his age, but Ashley doesn’t see it that way.

I’m a firm believer in not taking hand outs, if you’ve got a vision- work hard for it! The name “’Swaye Electrical Services’ has a really interesting back story. Ashley tells us how, after he qualified, he went for a Chinese with some friends. “I picked up a fortune cookie, opened it and it said ‘Your Success Will Astonish Everyone’, so I kept it and stuck it on the fridge. It was quite a nice thing to have when you’re knackered

www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

PLYMOUTH SWAYE ELECTRICAL GARDEN MACHINERY SERVICES

Ashley sat down one night and scribbled a few ideas for a logo design. He cleverly swapped the first letter of each word in the quote. “ Your Success Will Astonish Everyone- S-W- A-Y- E” and that’s how the name was created. The arrows in the logo could signify a number of things, “Positivity, efficiency, the only way is up - the only Swaye is up!” Although Swaye Electrical Services was going from strength to strength, this took its toll on Ashley. “It got to the stage where it was getting unmanageable. I couldn’t supply the demand I had coming in, and because of the nature of the work I had to be at every job.” Ashley’s social life suffered, working 16 hours a day, it soon became too much to handle on his own. “I was renovating a house at the time on top of everything else. I lost a few friends and suffered from slight depression”. This was

a really important lesson, and he set out to look for someone to join him. Ashley went back to the College in the hope of taking on an apprentice. But with the work load so high, he couldn’t afford to take on a 16-18 year old who didn’t have much experience . “I needed someone who could help me as much as I’d be helping them”. After a chat with his fiance , Ashley had the realisation that his step brother, Steve- would be the perfect person to approach. “Steve had all the credentials, it was staring us in the face and we just didn’t see it!” Steve joined Swaye in February 2016, when Ashley has been self employed for just under a year. Steve tells us “I left school, and I looked into being an electrician but never gave it much thought after that.” Steve spent the next 10 years after leaving school hoping to get into the Police. He job hopped at the time, and when Ashley approached him it was an offer he couldn’t refuse. Steve is in the first year of his apprenticeship and has three years to go.

“Working with Ashley, it’s great. I left school and did a few jobs, but never a career. This feels, and is, more of a career. I feel like I am now working towards something”. Ashley tells us that he believes it is his enthusiasm that is the key to Swaye’s success. Enthusiasm for his work, and enthusiasm to meet new people. “You’ve got to enjoy talking to people because you are going into their homes”.

from working so hard.” Ashley tells us how it can get tough- “there are always going to be people trying to bring you down for whatever personal reasons, and don’t see where your aspirations are going”.

Sometimes I lay myself bare, I am totally honest. I like to take the time to build relationships with customers Locally, the business is doing great. Ashley tells us that his client base is built entirely through word of mouth and is increasing his commercial and industrial clients. “I think it is more beneficial having a really strong local base. It makes sense to own your own area before branching out”. So what does the future hold for Swaye Electrical Services? Ashley tells us that he is always looking to grow. He says that taking Steve on as an apprentice was quite a safe move because he knew what he was getting. “We are family, so the relationship is really easy” He explains that the next step is taking on someone else to expand the business. Ashley has some advice for people thinking of starting out on their own. “Just do it. Even if you’re surviving on bread and water, just do it. The freedom is incredible and being your own boss is just the best thing. As long as you’re willing to work hard, then you will be successful. No matter what form of work you are in”.

Now in its 27th year, National Pet Month promotes the health benefits of pet ownership, service animals and most importantly, responsible ownership.

Owning a pet is a rewarding experience, but it also carries many responsibilities that people might be unprepared for when first choosing a companion. When considering a companion animal, it’s essential to take into account finances, space and their personal needs. Although you may have your heart set on an Alaskan malamute, a big dog might be a poor choice for your studio apartment. When you buy an animal, you should be ready to commit for life, so it’s vital to avoid impulsive decisions to avoid the heartbreak of having to rehome your beloved friend. Pets can be a huge burden on your personal finances, especially when accounting for unforeseen costs, such as unexpected vet bills. Whether you want to share your home with a cat, dog or smaller critter, your pet will require feeding, entertaining and health checkups, all of which quickly add up. Adopting an animal, rather than buying from breeders, can often have many surprising benefits. Although you may not be capable of providing the right environment for pet with specific needs due to neglect or abuse, there are animals available to suit every circumstance and experience level. By adopting a pet, you also can save money, as shelters often microchip, vaccinate, spay or neuter pets before they are brought into your care. When you adopt, any fees will be reinvested into the shelter, ensuring that unwanted pets receive the love and respect that they deserve. Finally, by adopting from a shelter, you can feel proud knowing that you are providing a pet with a second chance at a happy life.

Health Benefits If you already own a pet, you’ll already be aware of the happiness they can

Please mention OM Magazine when responding to adverts

bring to your daily life, but did you know that they can also benefit your health? Pets can have a positive influence on individuals who suffer from depression and other debilitating mental illnesses, offering motivation as well as relaxation. The companionship pets provide can be a source of comfort for their owners, providing a great way to reduce anxiety, with studies suggesting that pet owners have lower blood pressure in stressful situations. As well as positively impacting your mental health, pets can also encourage a healthier lifestyle through fitness and exercise. Owning a dog can promote physical activity, providing a great incentive to leave the house and go for a walk. According to the University of Missouri, people who own dogs are more likely to stick to their fitness plans, with regular, low-impact exercise helping weight maintenance. Ultimately, dog walkers tend to have a better overall sense of wellbeing and satisfaction, leaving them feeling happier and healthier.

Service pets Pets play an important role in the daily lives of many people, not just as companions but also as colleagues, and National Pet Month is the perfect time to honour these service animals and the positive impact they have on many lives. Service animals come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including dogs, cats, miniature horses, and even potbellied pigs, each specifically trained to assist humans by performing certain tasks, such as safeguarding people with disabilities and other medical conditions. In the UK, service animals have important rights, allowing them to help their owners utilise shops and services that usually prohibit pets. Ultimately, service animals not only help fulfil daily tasks, but they can also help their owners achieve a greater sense of independence and freedom. National Pet Month is a fantastic opportunity for pet lovers across the country to celebrate our furry friends, and you can get involved by attending one of the many events taking place across the country, or by arranging your own! Learn how you can get involved on the National Pet Month website at

BUSINESS PROFILE It is obvious that K9 Meals on Wheels and K9 Splash Hydrotherapy are dedicated and compassionate. We speak to Tracy and Shane at their impressive hydrotherapy unit to see how it all started.

Sitting down with the owner, Shane- he tell us how in 1988, he started as a police officer for the Thames Valley Police in High Wycombe. “I was 27. I always wanted to be a police officer.” Shane applied for Thames Valley Police and they accepted him. Shane and his wife, who was also a police officermade the move for the position. In 1992, they were able to transfer back down to Devon and Cornwall, where Shane applied to become a dog handler in 1995. He was given a dog called Shogun, who was a fantastic long haired German Shepherd. “He was an amazing police dog. He was one of the most prolific thief catchers at the time”. Shane has had a number of police dogs since; Poppy, Dash, Shadow and Mac to name a few- some of which are retired with him today! Shane finished his policing in 2014 in Plymouth. His service was coming to an end, his dogs were of retirement age and he had other ideas brewing, so he decided to retire. Whilst in the Police Force, Shane was granted permission for a business interest so began his passion to supply friends and colleagues a quality nutritional dog food which took him to where he is today. In 2012, Shane came up with the name K9 Meals on Wheels. “I’m all about dogs really. We want them to have a good quality food – Meals, and we can deliver it- Wheels!”

Shane and Tracy met through their shared passion for all things pets at an agility show. Tracy, a qualified veterinary nurse, was a competitor in many of these agility shows, where Shane had a trade stand selling his dog food, natural treats and high quality joint aid . Tracy’s background and skills meant that she was a good team member to have on board. K9 Meals on Wheels is one of the South West’s biggest suppliers of Simpson’s Premium dog and cat food. Due to their ever growing customer base they have just had their largest stock delivery, a 15 tonne shipment! Shane tells us how he came across the versatile product, researched the ingredients and gave it to a few customers to trial, it was an instant hit and the feed back was excellent. Shane has built up a good relationship with the company over the years. “It’s a really good high quality product, and it’s UK made. I don’t want to stock other foods because I know what is in this product. I trust and believe in the Simpsons Premium range of foods.

K

9 Meals On Wheels don’t just want to sell you dog food, as a customer they offer a unique experience not available anywhere else locally. free food samples, free training, free general health advice, free delivery and always on the end of the phone or email.

K9 Meals on Wheels supply Woodside Animal Charity Trust with all of their cat & dog food, and are on hand to offer free training

So what makes the food special? Shane tells us that the ingredients are key, human grade and not meat derivative with low quality ingredients “We don’t like anything manmade in it, we don’t like chemically preserved products”. There is evidence to suggest that it can be harmful to our dogs, and some of the ingredients in dog food are banned from

Shane and Tracy

the human food chain. Shane says that tells him all he needs to know- “So why do we put it in our dog food? Because it’s cheaper, and will give the food an extended shelf life, some up to 2 years!! There are many benefits from choosing Simpsons. Grain in food is becoming a problem with a lot of dogs, so Simpsons have a grain free product which can help with some skin and digestive problems. ”Simpsons also have a range to help with weight loss, coupled with regular exercise. The whole range of products also have a joint package in the food. K9 Meals on Wheels offer a free home visit for you to talk about your pet’s diet. They ask pet owners to be completely honest and when they are its clear to see where the diet is going wrong “Shane has seen some horrific pet diets over the years, including Frosties every morning and porridge with golden syrup! Obesity is a massive issue for dogs in the UK at the moment, and Shane outlines the importance of a good balanced diet for your pet. Looking around us, the hydrotherapy unit is very impressive. A 5 x 2.5 metre pool heated to 30 degrees dominates the room. A beautiful dog called Banksy comes bounding in for a session on the Treadmillso we all abandon the interview to go and watch him strut his stuff! Shane tells us that the treadmill is the only one in Plymouth, and we watch as it slowly

- K9 MEALS ON WHEELS AND HYDROTHERAPY fills up with warm water whilst Banksy waits patiently to get started. Tracy controls the incline and speed by an I phone app. It is all very professional, and it is clear that the dogs absolutely love it here. We are keen to find out how the hydrotherapy came about, so we leave Banksy to his treatment and sit back down with Shane. “It came from two customers actually. They just happened to see us at a show and they said- why don’t you start up a hydrotherapy unit for dogs?!” and that sowed the seed. Shane spoke to Tracy about it, who was working as a veterinary nurse for the PDSA at the time. The pair did some surveying around local vet practices and the outcome was fantastic. “Some of them knew Tracy because of her history within the profession, but as soon as we proposed the idea the response was-

when can you start?! They said that they would send us the clients, and it was about time Plymouth had a hydrotherapy unit.” They moved into their new unit in Newnham Industrial Estate on the 19th of September 2015. K9 Splash Hydrotherapy offer fitness swims for agility or working dogs, puppy swims, and hydrotherapy treatment for an array of conditions such as arthritis, weight loss, spinal problems and rehabilitation from an injury or surgery. Veterinary referral is mandatory for an appointment with Tracy in the pool or treadmill, regardless of whether they have a condition or not. “it’s all veterinary referral which is one of the conditions of being a member of the CHA (Canine Hydrotherapy Association) ensuring your pet is fit for treatment and in safe hands. This also helps if a dog or cat comes in with a condition

Tracy with her 9 week old puppy- Jay

such as arthritis- Tracy can get hold of the pet’s relevant medical files and come up with a tailored treatment schedule and formulate a course of recovery. Shane reflects on the transition from the police to doing what he does now. “It was quite hard to make the decision to retire. But I have a very different life now and I am probably doing more hours than I was in the police service!” He talks about his loyal client base that he has built up over the years. “We are well known locally, people trust us. I just enjoy my work, it’s very fulfilling. Watching customers faces when things go right makes it all worth it”.

Banksy using the treadmill with Tracy

This is just a big success story for us really; I have to pinch myself sometimes

So what does the future hold? Shane says he has been very taken aback by how successful the business has been, quickly as well. “I do think about it, but I’ve got to reign myself in a little bit. We are always looking for the next stage so there could be something in the future, we are going to have to wait and see!”

Trump: Friend or Foe?

R

egardless of your political stance, the last year has been a period of upheaval. The recent Brexit vote has divided Britain in two, resulting in an uncertain economic forecast for 2017. But Donald Trump’s surprise victory over Hilary Clinton in the US general election last November has caused unpredictable implications, not just on a national scale, but internationally. Consequently, this raises the imperative question: how will Trump’s administration affect the United Kingdom – for better or for worse? Brexit Trump was a firm supporter of Britain leaving the European Union, even famously declaring himself “Mr. Brexit” on Twitter. Upon receiving news of the successful leave vote, the president expressed his support, stating: “People, countries want their own identity, and the UK wanted its own identity”. Alongside his support of Brexit, Trump has assured the potential for trans-Atlantic trade deals, promising to draw up a contract after the UK formally leaves the EU. According to Niles Gardiner of the Heritage Foundation, an arrangement could be implemented “within 90 days” after Brexit. Although an optimistic timeframe, the trade agreement would be beneficial to the UK and the US, cementing relations between the two countries and pressuring the European Union into securing its own trade deal. However, until Article 50 is triggered, and the UK officially withdraws from the EU, the country is at the mercy of legislation preventing the negotiation of new trade arrangements. It is, therefore, too soon to predict how economically beneficial the proposed trans-Atlantic trade agreement

will be for the UK until the particulars of Brexit have been resolved. The “Special Relationship” A self-proclaimed Anglophile, Trump has expressed an interest in maintaining the ‘special relationship’ which has historically existed between the US and the United Kingdom, even stating that the two countries combined are “One of the great forces in history for justice and peace.” During their first joint news conference after the inauguration, Prime Minister Theresa May stated the she was “delighted” to be able to congratulate Trump on his election victory, stating that her invitation was “an indication of the strength and importance of the special relationship that exists between our two countries–a relationship based on the bonds of history, of family, kinship and common interests.” Theresa May’s pragmatic approach to the new president is not a sentiment shared by many, however. House of Commons Speaker John Bercow has asserted that Trump will not be unable to address parliament on his state visit, stressing his opposition to the temporary migrant ban. The speaker had stated that the opportunity to address parliament is “not an automatic right” but an “earned honour”. Purportedly, in response to Bercow’s statements, the Commons erupted into applause in support of his intervention. Likewise, the British public have similarly expressed their concerns, with protests taking place across UK to convey disapproval of Trump’s Administration, as well as criticising Theresa May’s support. Moreover, a petition demanding MPs prevent a state visit by the president has reached over

Please mention OM Magazine when responding to adverts

one million signatures. As a result of this condemnation, May has temporarily pushed back Trump’s planned visit to the UK to October, attempting to allow the public’s negative sentiments to fade. Global Economics So far, Trump’s major proposals have included changes to infrastructure, taxation and trade. These economic policies are of international importance due to their overarching implications on the global economy. Although there has been a minor resurgence in the global economy already this year, Trump’s radical proposals and aggressive public persona will potentially threaten global financial stability, according to economists. A particular global concern is Trump’s “America First” isolationist strategy, after the US withdrew from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, surrendering its stance as the centre of the Asian economic system. Alongside his plan to impose higher trade tariffs on China, this is likely to have a negative impact on the global economy, with subsequent knockon effects for the UK. At this stage, many of Trump’s proposals lack detail, and are even sometimes contradictory. Therefore, until there are firm policies in place, it is difficult to analyse the long-term impact Trump’s administration will have on the UK. The outspoken millionaire is notably divisive and unpredictable, with the potential to change the power balance of the world. What is certain though, is that with Donald Trump in the white house, America’s relationship with the United Kingdom is on the verge of considerable transformation.

SCHOOL’S FIRST EVER STUDENTS TAKE A UNIFORM APPROACH

I

t’s not every day you get to choose the school uniform you are going to wear for the next three years but that’s exactly what the first students to attend Plymouth’s newest secondary school have just done. The first ever Year 9 at Scott Medical and Healthcare College took part in a text vote to choose a uniform from three suggestions when they attended their Options Evening on Wednesday 8 March at the school’s sponsor Stoke Damerel Community College.

Option Two – a blue jacket with white piping, a tie, black trousers and the option of a blue pleated, checked skirt for girls – was the most popular choice garnering more than 60% of the vote. The jacket also sports a badge bearing the Scott College logo designed by Plymouth University design student Melissa Noble. Plans for the 375-student school - which will open on 4 September 2017 - were announced by the Department for Education in March 2015. It will be teaching young people in Years 9 to 13 to develop highly-valued vocational academic experience for the medical and healthcare sector and the first Year 9 – the Class of 2020 – is almost full. Tim Creswell, curriculum lead, Martyn Cox, headteacher, Louise Humpherson, work placement co-ordinator

Applications are still open for places in the College’s first Year 12 and the College’s first phase of teacher recruitment is currently under way.

The headteacher of Scott College, Martyn Cox, said choosing the uniform was an important step in underlining the College’s ethos and core values and that the students’ input was key.

We wanted our first Year 9 to have a real stake in how they present themselves and Scott College while at school and when out on work placement

“Their choice is a smart, comfortable uniform which will reinforce their view of themselves as the medics of the future,” he said. Students who start in Year 9 will each be given a blazer free of charge. Curriculum lead Tim Cresswell, who has overseen the uniform design process, said staff were keen that students helped shape the future of Scott College. “Giving our young people the responsibility for something as important as their uniform shows the voice of our students will always be heard and taken seriously,” said Mr Cresswell. “The Scott College uniform conveys a smart, professional mindset and will be very recognisable as our students go to their work placements. “ 30 April 2017

Studio schools are state schools which are more like workplaces with a longer school day and classroom teaching combined with work placements. At first, students will carry out work experience from half a day to a full day each week. Admitting pupils aged between 13 and 19, the studio school will be separate and distinct from Stoke Damerel whilst taking advantage of the economies of scale of being a part of the Inspiring Schools Partnership multi-academy trust. Central to the vision for the school - which offers a range of academic, vocational and professional qualifications - is its partnership with a number of local healthcare educators and practitioners who have been key in formulating the studio school’s unique and innovative curriculum. As well as the university’s Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry (PUPSMD) and its Faculty of Health and Human Sciences, Plymouth NHS Hospitals Trust is also a partner in Scott College. AUTISM AWARENESS The ninth annual World Autism Day is 2nd April 2017, but what is autism, and how can you participate? Read on to learn more about the condition, raise awareness and learn how you can help!

A

utism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a developmental disability, characterised by problems with social interaction, speech and non-verbal communication. As a spectrum condition, the disorder varies between individuals, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. At its most extreme, an autistic person has intense difficulties communicating, and may even require round-the-clock supervision. Autism is a surprisingly common disability, with 700,000 people with the condition in the UK alone–affecting more than 1 in every 100 individuals. Including family members and carers, autism is a daily consideration for over 2.8 million people. With so many people affected, it’s surprising how few people on the spectrum feel supported. According to The National Autistic Society, 63% of autistic children are not in a supportive educational environment, whilst 70% of autistic adults feel they are not receiving adequate help from social services.

Causes The causes of autism are currently unknown, although research suggests that the cause could be any number of environmental, genetic or biological factors. Some cases have been linked to prenatal

36 April 2017

chemical exposure, making it essential to contact your GP before medicating whilst pregnant. It was once suggested that a preservative in certain vaccines could cause autism in young children, though these claims have since been discredited, and although there is no evidence of harm, the preservative has been removed as a precautionary measure.

Types of Autism There are three different types of autism currently recognised, including autistic disorder, asperser syndrome and childhood degenerative disorder. Although these conditions may share characteristics, there are a few fundamental differences: Autistic Disorder Autistic disorder (also known as classic autism, childhood autism, early infantile autism, and Kanner’s syndrome) is what people tend to think of upon hearing the word ‘autism’. People with the condition tend to suffer from language and communication delays, social challenges and repetitive behaviours and interests. Asperger Syndrome Asperger syndrome (also known as asperger’s) tends to present in milder symptoms than autistic disorder, and

Call OM Plymouth 01752 691007

individuals diagnosed are inclined to be of average or above average intelligence. The condition is characterised by similar social challenges, and unusually focused interests, but may lack the language and communication delays present in autistic disorder. Childhood Degenerative Disorder CDD (also known as Heller’s syndrome) is a rare condition characterised by considerable developmental delays and regression, usually affecting language, movement and social function. A common symptom is the loss of ability to communicate in children who previously had the ability to converse in sentences. CDD tends to manifest in children of about 4 years old, after several years of normal development.

Identification The National Institute of Mental Health states that symptoms tend to vary between individuals, making autism difficult to immediately identify, but there are a few fundamental signs which could help lead to a diagnosis. In children, indications might include problems with social interaction from a young age, issues with verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviour patterns. Symptoms might

www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

present differently in adults, such as an inability to read or understand the intentions of others, restrictive and repetitive patterns of behaviour, difficulty maintaining conversation, and an avoidance of social interaction.

“We haven’t had an alarm clock in years! I don’t need one. We have our son. He knows what time it is down to the second regarding his daily routine, and also ours. Our son has asperger syndrome, and amongst other things, he thrives on predictability and routine. No, he NEEDS it! Mornings are a delicate dance. Every minute counts. Getting things “right” is crucial, and can set the balance for the whole day. He also never. forgets. anything.

Diagnosis

Raising a child with autism is a constant challenge: daily rituals can last five minutes to five hours, anger, hostility, violent meltdowns, not knowing the triggers of so much psychological pain, not eating or tolerating the strong smell of others foods... This is our day. Being his parent is an exhausting, exhilarating and often a lonely rollercoaster ride.

Unfortunately, there is no known cure for autism, but it can be extremely valuable to seek a diagnosis from a doctor. There are a number of benefits to seeking a formal diagnosis, including helping others to understand the difficulties of the condition, and finding appropriate support. In children, diagnosis is possible from a young age, but it is often more common to seek medical help later in the child’s development, especially if the condition does not have accompanying learning difficulties. Ultimately, It is important to trust your instincts and take action if you feel your child might be expressing common symptoms, instead of waiting to see if the symptoms escalate. When medical intervention is sought, there are several stages before formal diagnosis. The first step is to discuss your situation with a medical professional, making sure to outline all the behaviours and characteristics that concern you or your child. It is during this initial meeting where the medical professional may carry out a ‘screening’. This is not a diagnosis, but it will indicate whether the concerned individual is autistic, or has other underlying issues to address. After this screening, the GP or health visitor will refer the case onward for assessment, where a diagnosis can be secured. We’ve spoken to Judi Armstrong, who sent in a piece about being a mother to her autustic son, the challenges she faces, and the positive side of the condition:

What we hear daily from many is ‘but he looks so normal’. I have to seriously put aside my Neanderthal thoughts when this is said...Tell me, what does an autistic child look like?! What I can tell you is this: whilst our children may act differently from what you’re familiar with, they are our ‘normal’. They are full of emotion, fierce love, beauty, and tender hearts. Our son, as many with asperger syndrome, is very smart, talented and creative. Children with asperger’s usually have this incredible, unspecified talent that you have to find because their minds work differently. Our son has danced with Matthew Bourne, done much Theatre Royal work, Acted in two worldwide cinema films and whose wonderful acting/singing talent is positively embraced at his secondary school. You have to persist, nag, threaten and beg as an advocate for your child, and to be the advocate he needs you to be. The relationship between your child, us as parents, the teachers, the head teacher and others is crucial. Oh, one other thing. We all claim to value the truth, but almost all of us tell little white lies. All that is except people on the Autistic spectrum. There is no hidden agenda. To them truth is Truth – and a good word from our son on the spectrum really is the real deal.” Judi Armstrong- Proud Mother xx

Care Caring for someone with autism can be daunting, especially if the symptoms are severe. It may help to slightly alter your own behaviour towards the care-receiver in order to improve communication. Particular changes include keeping background noise to a minimum, and keeping language simple and clear. There are a variety of support

avenues and resources available to help you achieve this, for both carers and autistic individuals, on the NHS and the National Autistic Society websites. It is also important to utilise support systems and take advantage of the benefits which are available to you. If you act as a fulltime guardian you could apply for Carer’s Allowance to help you with expenses.

How can i help?

day AUTISM 2APRIL International

Even if your daily life isn’t affected by Autism, you can still help! Many charities require volunteers. Fundraising is essential for continuation of quality services and advocacy and you can help by making a donation to one of the many charities available including Autism Initiatives, Child Autism UK and The National Autistic Society. There are also a variety of free newsletters online, which provide the latest news, support and research, education and resources. Finally, it’s important to spread awareness of how autism, although sometimes debilitating, is also a disability characterised by positive traits too. Many autistic individuals are intelligent, focused and passionate, and tend to see the world in a different, but equally valid way.
