Editor's Note... Hello - I hope you’re all having a good month. I’m trying to, but the pollen this time of year is leaving me worse for wear! We’ve got some fantastic Business Profiles in this month’s issue. We met with father and son duo who create intricate, hand-crafted bespoke art pieces using sustainably sourced hardwoods. Our team met with a different Wolferstans team this time at their office based in Plymstock - with such a big team of over 200 people, there’s so much we have to learn about the local law firm; and once again, we stopped by Shapla Balti to catch up with Mr. Ali and his team to keep you updated on the latest and greatest. I’d like to use this note to let all of our readers know that I am stepping down as Editor for our magazine. I have had a great time getting to know the team here at OM, and I’d like to thank all of our clients for being so fantastic to work with. Our Interim Abby will be taking over the reins and I’m confident in saying that she will do a fab job!

The kitchen is without doubt the heart of the home, and cooking brings the family together. If there was a cost effective and environmentally concious way of updating your kitchen, you want to know you are in the right hands with the best customer service. We spoke with Dream Doors to find out more about what they do and what they have to offer.
D
ream Doors has successfully provided inspirational kitchen makeovers since 1999, installing over 70,000 kitchens and today has 90 showrooms nationwide. Their Plymouth showroom opened in May and business has been thriving since. We caught up with Dream Doors business owner, David Ward, for a chat about his role at Dream Doors and the new Plymouth showroom. David entered Dream Doors after a highly successful career in the Royal Marines, which included a year leading the UK reconstruction programme in Iraq, followed by a 4-year spell leading The C Group Charity under the Chairmanship of Tony Rowe, supporting Marines injured on operational service transition to meaningful future careers.
“Dream Doors is a highly reputable franchise opportunity to which we can incorporate our military values and work ethos to provide exceptional service to our customers”. It is clear to see that David is focused on listening to what his customers want and following through to provide top notch customer service, transferring his previous career values and experience to ensure each and every customer is valued every step of the process. As a family business, working within a national chain gives Dream Doors Plymouth a significant advantage; with quality and competitively priced products through a national supply chain, combined with a highly ethical and

values-based family business, and a team that takes pride in their customer service.
“It’s all about people, and we’re blessed to have an incredible team in the showroom and fitting, who combine years of experience with impeccable personal values.” David believes Dream Doors are different from other kitchen suppliers, their focus is to provide customers a choice and value for money when they upgrade their kitchens. They can provide anything from a complete kitchen to a single door and everything in between. With most customers choosing to keep their existing cabinets, Dream Doors then replace the doors and worktops, and can also provide appliances, tiles, and flooring.
“Customers choose as little or as much as they want, and select from a huge range of doors styles and colours, from traditional to contemporary, in any colour and in made to measure sizes.” When asked how the new showroom has been doing, David told us “The new showroom has been warmly received by our customers. It’s designed to help them select from the range of products, and situated on a main road with free parking outside it’s really easy for them to get to.” It’s no wonder their new showroom has been a huge hit across Plymouth and the South West. As consumers, we are becoming more aware of how what we do impacts the environment; this is why Dream Doors are committed to the environment and focus

on sustainability. They replace the doors and keep existing carcasses. By doing this they reduce the waste of a kitchen upgrade by over 50%, allowing them to use smaller and more fuel-efficient vehicles for transporting goods.
They recycle all of the appliances removed from homes, passing them through community groups to be checked and re-used to support people in need, or sold for charitable benefit. We asked David about what the future has in store for Dream Doors Plymouth, he explained “We’re ambitious and principled. As we grow we’ll look to take on charitable projects within the community where we can add genuine value, and will continue to incorporate further initiatives in our focus on sustainability. We’re also looking to take on apprentices and others to help them commence new careers, enabling them to learn and develop under the supervision of our exceptional team.” For more information about Dream Doors, and how they can help transform your kitchen, visit their website at www.dreamdoors.co.uk or contact them at the Plymouth showroom based in Devonport.

Here in the South West, we have some of the best talent in the arts industry in the country. So when we had the rare opportunity to interview one of the fastest growing arts businesses we have come across, we jumped at the chance to meet the owners. Fatherson duo, Andy and Paul based in Plymouth, create beautifully handmade, bespoke works of art from their home. We spent the afternoon with them finding out about Cedarwood Arts and exploring their creations.
S
etting up a business in the South West is the trickiest at the best of times, let alone in the arts industry. The UK economy is changing rapidly and the vast range of businesses to compete with across the country and in the South West, in particular, makes it hard to stand out above the rest. For business owner Paul Mills and his son Andy Mills, Cedarwood Arts doesn’t just stand out, it shines with utter uniqueness. OM caught up with Paul and Andy to find out more about Cedarwood Arts and how their business is quickly evolving. Being self-employed isn’t new to Paul Mills, who has worked in the building trade for over 40 years. Paul has been striving for a new venture that combines his love for nature and walking, with his passion for arts and creative work. Paul’s son, Andy, has been working in publishing for the last 5 years around London and Cambridge but decided in
March 2019 to take a leap of faith and move back to Plymouth to fulfil his dream of illustrating fulltime. The concept of Cedarwood Arts originated from Paul’s love of walking and nature. He has been walking National trails around Britain for the past three years, including the Two Moors Way, a trail from Lynmouth to Wembury to the Cotswolds Way last year where he met Laura and Amy. Their friendship inspired the feathers behind Cedarwood Arts when Paul left a trail of feathers for them to find during their journey along the trail. Since parting ways from the trail, Paul has kept in touch with the pair who are from Portland, Oregon; they encouraged him to make the feathers.
“Last year I purchased a scroll saw, and I was experimenting with ideas and things I would like to make, but then I had this idea about creating feathers.”
Meet Paul & Andy Mills! The experiments started out as a hobby when Paul invested in his scroll saw, quickly he began to see potential in the creations. After getting in touch with a local furniture maker in Yealmpton who supplies locally and responsibly sourced offcuts of wood, from oak and beech to birch, Paul began to experiment with the feathers, the Cedarwood signature piece.
“They were originally conceived as bookmarks and paperweight. But they have gradually evolved.” After showcase and selling the feathers at networking events, Paul was told that it was as far as they would go. Then Andrew came on board. Cedarwood Arts began in March 2019 when Andrew moved back to Plymouth, he wanted to try and do something different. With a BA in Illustration and MA in Publishing, creating artwork was only a natural progression for Andy. He explained: “When I came back, my dad had a new hobby every week or so. One week he’s going to be a painter, the next week he’s going to be a carpenter. And on a whim, he had bought the pyrography machine. He had done little tests with it, some were better than others, but he was getting frustrated with it.”
Andy tried out the pyrography machine and found it clicked with him straight away, becoming second nature. 10 July 2019

It started off as little patterns and designs, moving to more ambitious, full blown illustrations. Having only moved back permanently in March this year, they quickly changed from little books marks and paperweights into full-on art pieces.
Since Cedarwood began a short few months ago, Paul and Andy have been proactive in networking and showing off their beautiful creations at exhibitions, tradeshows and have even grabbed the interest of 4 local galleries. Including Kaya Gallery at Plymouth Barbican and Wildwood Arts based on Dartmoor. “The pieces get a lot of wow factor, they haven’t seen anything like it. It is very beautifully unique. We’ve developed our own style and embraced it.” Each and every piece Cedarwood Arts produce is distinctively unique; photographs don’t do them any justice, they are truly stunning in person. Andy creates the illustrations on the wood after it is cut, shaped and sanded by Paul. The pyrography pen gives different marks and textures depending on the nib used and the temperature. No two pieces are the same with different types of wood having different responses to the heat, the wood almost guiding the illustration. The inspiration for each piece comes from the interest Andy shows in myths and legends. “Once I get a flat piece, I don’t really plan it out, I’m drawing and it draws itself really. When people have asked for a certain piece I’ll do something that is tailored for them, otherwise, it’s just my own little world in my head coming out.” The opportunity for this business is just phenomenal, everything they can do is bespoke, if you want something in particular made, they can do it. It’s no wonder their calendar has filled up rapidly! With festivals, networking events and shows taking up a vast amount of their time.
“If we’re successful we will carry on doing it. The opportunities are just endless.” Things are looking up for the pair who have been busy growing their social media presence through Instagram, Facebook and their newly designed website by Andy. They have focused their time on creating an online shop to showcase and sell their pieces beyond Devon and Cornwall, investing in 3D scanning and printing their original pieces to sell at an affordable price.
“It’s not just the artwork, it’s carved down first, it’s got a full on journey behind it with two people working on each piece. Each one being anywhere between 6 and 10 hours, in completion!”
It’s been a massive learning curve for Paul and Andy, they have worked hard trying to find out which markets work for them and what events will be the most beneficial to getting their name out there and working out the best way to move forward with this new venture. “I know it’s going to take 18 months to 2 years before it really gets to a point that you would hope people have heard of the name at least.”
With business evolving as successfully as their’s is in only three months, we asked both Paul and Andy what their vision is for Cedarwood Arts. Andy told us - “For me, this project came at a good time for me, I wasn’t too happy in London. I was wanting to get away and to be honest, I don’t think I’m built for office work, it’s just not my thing. So it sounds really low scale, but just being able to make a living from the artwork and doing something that I really really love, that’s really what’s driving me. The dream would be walking into a shop, going to the art section and having a book that’s a collection of my work. My artwork has always been a hobby, I never thought it would come to anything. The possibility of it being what I can be known for is the drive for me.” For Paul, it is more about combining his passion for nature, with creativity and making a living out of it. - “I’ve been in the building trade for 40 years and I’m looking for a way of cutting back and if I can make a living from being creative; with me starting this process and with Andrew coming back, its fate really, things have really come together.” It really is incredible to see how hard work, authenticity, and motivation has allowed Paul and Andy to develop Cedarwood Arts into a unique and well-received business in just three months. Their bond as father and son, along with the raw talent from both will only allow them to be successful not only in the South West but internationally. There are limitless opportunities for Cedarwood Arts, and with local support, they really will go from strength to strength. For more information about Cedarwood Arts, or if you want a commissioned piece, please don’t hesitate to contact Paul or Andy. To see their work head over to www.cedarwoodarts.com

SUMMER DAYS OUT! YOUR TRAVEL GUIDE
We’re giving your our recommendations for the perfect trip to enjoy the summer sunshine!
W
e have officially entered the start of the summer months, which means we should begin to enjoy warmer temperatures, longer days, and some proper sun. We’re not particularly blessed with good weather here in Britain, which is why it’s good to plan ahead in order to make the most of the better days. With a long list of various places, venues and outings to visit, it can sometimes become overwhelming to decide how you’d like to best spend your time this summer. You’ll be pleased to know that we’ve done the research so you don’t have to.
Traffic can be absolutely horrendous during the summer holidays, with everyone rushing from A to B in order to make the most of the good weather and their time off; so if you don’t fancy spending extra cash on fuel, put your trust into local transport links that will get you to your travel destination in no time! No one wants to lose their precious time in the good weather, wasting away in the seat their car whilst sitting through miles of traffic. The kids are in the back screaming “Are we there yet?!”, the air-con is just about working, and by the time you do arrive, there’s nowhere left to park. Take the unnecessary stress out of what is meant to be your fun-packed trip, and let someone else take the wheel. Although the options of various outings can seem endless - most of the time, choosing where you would like to go to is often the easiest part of the planning process - but figuring out how you’re going to get there is when the cogs in your brain start spinning at a faster pace.
You want the best deal you can get you to your destination quickly, but with the endless list of options available online, how do you whittle it down to the one that works for you? Please mention OM Plymouth Magazine when responding to adverts
You shouldn’t have to look too far if the location you’re planning on travelling to is close to home. Local destinations are easier to reach than ever with the various bus routes on-hand for absolutely anyone to use. Taking you to popular spots both inside and outside of Plymouth, Citybus travels to a wide range of different areas - so there is bound to be something on offer for everyone.

Now with their Ocean City Sights bus, you can view all of the fantastic attractions within our city, all in a single trip! Keeping it local is often the best way to make the most of the warm weather this summer - especially if you’re a family with young children who tire out easily! For those who fancy branching out a bit further, don’t worry, we have something for you too.
Planning to keep your trips close to home is always a great option; but considering we’re not always blessed with the most sunshine, it might be better to look at something further afield. Summer is the most popular time of year to be hitting the hotter countries for a muchdeserved holiday away, however, these trips are most often easier said than done. You want to be able to create the perfect get-away without all of the stress of having to plan it all - seems impossible right? Truth be told, there is a way. Alan Witt of Not Just Travel is your Personal Travel Expert. If you tell him what you’d like from your holiday, he will sort everything out for you. Whatever you want and whatever your budget, he’ll be sure to take care of it.

As members of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), and with access to over 2000 travel brands, you can have confidence in your Personal Travel Expert to find the best deal for you.
Not Just Travel will listen to your ideas and use their travel expertise to explore a selection of holidays that inspire you. With the planning taken out of your hands, it’s just down to you to make the most of the journey and create memories that will last a lifetime. See what offers Alan has available for you by visiting his website (listed in the advert below). As convenient as using your own mode of transport can be, sometimes it’s best to rely on others, especially when this is your time to be relaxing. There’s not only that - just consider the impact you are having on the environment by opting for modes of public transportation, which are much more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly. It’s no secret that driving can be stressful, which is exactly the opposite of what most people aim for during the summer break. Just make sure when you’re deciding how to get from A to B this summer, that it’s done in a way that works best for you.

These days most of us are more than happy to travel to a good restaurant, some are happy to travel far to try a reputable restaurant with a high quality reputation for exquisite taste, good service and welcoming reception, but what if you didn’t have to travel, what if one of the best restaurants from Gloucestershire to Lands end was right here on our door step?
L
et us introduce to you Mr Moshahid Ali a man who will go above and beyond to create what has been said to be one of the best restaurants and dining experiences in the South West, Shapla Balti Cuisine. As the owner of the business, you can imagine that he has his hands full, but that doesn’t stop him from hosting the best service possible in an establishment that his customers describe as being “the best tasting Indian food in Plymouth”. We visited Mr Ali a year ago as Shapla Balti had been nominated for the very prestigious British Curry Awards. Now one year later since the OM Team last
visited Mr Ali we find yet again, Shapla Balti Cuisine has been nominated and shortlisted for the 2018 British Curry Awards! Shapla Balti is the only Indian restaurant to be shortlisted for the Best in South West category from Plymouth - and when considering that this category covers everything from Lands End up to Cheltenham, it’s easy to agree what an amazing achievement that is. This is the second time that Mr Ali and his team have been shortlisted for the British Curry Awards and Mr Ali knows it won’t be their last because he has a fantastic team behind him. “It’s big thanks to my
Mr Moshahid Ali chef and my staff; they’re really hard working people. It’s a team effort. Like when you’re playing cricket, football, any team sport, no matter what a good player you are, you need the rest of the team there to win. So I believe it’s a team effort to satisfy the customers and it works. I have a great team behind me who are great to work with.”
The Best in South West category is shortlisted to only eight restaurants. Shapla Balti has come away with a prestigious certificate that states their title of being one of the best in the South West. Nominations are done anonymously but after building an impressive reputation for himself in the Plympton community, it’s perhaps a bit clearer to see people would choose Mr Ali’s establishment: “The people of Plympton have been very good to us, we’ve been here a while now and we have a nice community here. We’ve seen children come in, grow up and come in with their children!” After being nominated, you are sent an application that you have to fill out to explain why you think you deserve the award. Before the awards ceremony the judges at the British Curry Awards will all make a decision after sending their mystery shopper to investigate:

If you’re still not convinced, you can read the rest of their reviews on their Trip Advisor page - but rest assured, there’s definitely a reason that they have been awarded a Certificate of Excellence four years running!
Looking to the future of the business, Mr Ali has no plans to leave Plympton. He loves the area and the people who are part of it. “I am friends with my customers, we have a great atmosphere here and everybody loves to socialise - that’s what makes this place so special.” The chefs of Shapla Balti! the service, quality of waiters and how they are presenting themselves. You never know who they are but sometimes you get a feel for it because you get something like three weeks timeframe in October where they will come in. So I will normally work seven days just to make sure I’m here when they come!” “We found out we were nominated in September time.” Mr Ali tells us, “After that they send you the golden envelope saying “you have been shortlisted”. They will give you a category and then you have to book a table to go. We didn’t win last time, but this time we’re going to do more so we can.”
“With hard work, with determination and if you have the willpower I think we can win. I believe that myself and my staff work hard enough to impress our customers.” Mr Ali and his business partner Amirul Islam had a lovely time at the British Curry Awards and are looking forward to next year! Shapla Balti offers authentic Punjabi, Kashmiri, Bengali and Indian Cuisine from their premises based on the Ridgeway, in Plympton. Mr Ali believes his establishment stands above the rest because of all of the hard work that is put in: “I believe that we work very hard. We do our best to satisfy our customers and I believe the reviews that our customers have left on Trip Advisor and word of mouth have given us this edge of where we are at the moment.”
Shapla Balti always puts their customers first. “Everyone who comes through that door we want to make sure that their experience is as comfortable as possible, we just want them to come here from home and be able to relax.”
Shapla Balti is open from 5:30-11:30pm 7 days a week, and delivers to the people of Plympton. You may have already found your go-to Indian, but it’s always good to try something different; and going by their recent success, it’s definitely worth a try!
Shapla Balti offers a wide range of dishes with a different variety of taste from mild, medium, spicy and hot to suit everyone’s palate. Shapla Balti sources their produce both locally and worldwide, so you know you’re getting an authentic Indian dish when you visit this establishment. Some of their signature dishes include the Tandoori Garlic Chilli Chicken and the Lamb Chun Chun - which is Mr Ali’s personal favourite! People really enjoy Shapla Balti Cuisine’s food and maybe that’s why they’re always returning for more:

“The best meal I’ve had in a long time! The staff are so friendly, especially the owner Mr Ali- you are treated like friends from the second you walk in, nothing is too much hassle!” “The food is amazing, especially the naan breads. Mr Ali is more than happy to give knowledgeable recommendations based on your taste, so you feel confident in trying something new. The menu is great and has so much choice. I’ve already made plans to come back again.”

OM RECOMMENDS:
Chris & James Tanner Explore the dishes that celebrate the Tanner Brother’s 20 years in business
2
0 years on from when they opened their first restaurant, award-winning chefs Chris and James Tanner are now at the heart of fine-dining here in Plymouth. Find out more about the pair, discover their traditional recipes that have stood the test of time, and explore through our own experience what it’s like to spend an evening dining at their restaurant, the Barbican Kitchen. Written by Sophie Squires, photos by Abby Donald Chris and James first opened Barbican Kitchen in 2006, with the aim of delivering fresh, local food at a realistic price. The restaurant itself is housed in the world famous Plymouth Gin Distillery, with their menu showcasing a variety of stunning local meats, vegetables, and top quality fish from a network of suppliers. The Tanner Brothers are acclaimed chefs and restaurateurs, having owned and operated their own businesses for the past twenty years. Their first restaurant, Tanners, opened in 1999, picking up a string of awards during its successful
fifteen years in business. As well as all of their businesses, the brothers work alongside several high profile global organisations. They are also extremely passionate about developing and nurturing future generations of the restaurant industry for both the kitchen and front of house, acting as patrons for both City College Plymouth & Bromley College in London. After hearing great things about the Barbican Kitchen - and of course, a quick scroll through TripAdvisor - it’s no surprise that our expectations were set high before we set foot in the building. As we entered the restaurant through the sliding glass doors, we were greeted by smiling front of house staff, who promptly showed us to our table (window seat and all, weren’t we lucky!). Our waitress for the evening, Becky, was very accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. Soon after being seated we were offered drinks and nibbles, and not long after we placed our order.
DID YOU KNOW... The brothers’ love for Devon began with family holidays to the area when they were children.
The menu offered a fantastic range of seasonal dishes. There were plenty of options available, but not so many that you felt overwhelmed with choice. Diners were also offered the option to make any of the vegetarian dishes vegan in order to fit their dietary requirements.
In light of Chris and James’ 20 year celebration of fine-dining, we decided to opt for the dishes that have remained staple options within their menus in order to truly get a taste of the brothers’ recipes that have stood by them from the very beginning.
We thought our eyes were deceiving us when we saw the massive portion of haddock presented in front of us - how on earth were we going to have room for dessert?! Don’t worry, we managed to do this with no problem at all.
To start, we had the Hand Picked South Devon Crab, with mango, spring onion, and salted peanut. The both of us hadn’t had crab in a very long time, so we were looking forward to a fresh, local dish. The flavour was fantastic and it was the perfect size for a starter - not so much that you were full before your main, but just enough to appease your appetite before moving onto the main course.
The batter was thin and crispy, and the fish itself was light and flavoursome, it was the perfect combination.
DID YOU KNOW... Over the last 20 years the Tanner Brothers have served over a million guests
What better way to truly taste a classic Tanner recipe than to opt for the fish and chips? This dish is significant to Chris and James’ 20th anniversary, as the recipe for the beer batter has remained completely unchanged; and there’s a good reason for it.
The chips are triple cooked to create a perfect finish on the outer layer and a fluffy centre to bite into. The mushy peas tasted fresh and creamy and rounded off the dish nicely. After being thoroughly defeated by our main course, our waitress asked us if we would like to see the dessert menu, and after a brief glance and nod to each other, we very quickly agreed. I opted for the classic creme brulee, another recipe that has stood the test of time, whilst Abby chose the cheesecake as her final dish of the evening. Both desserts were rich in flavour; and for mine personally, I can certainly see why the Tanner Brother’s have not changed the recipe for the creme brulee! The top layer was caramelised to the perfect finish and the creamy centre certainly made for a fantastic final dish. After finishing off our meal for the evening, we had a chat with the head chef of Barbican Kitchen - Martyn Compton worked with the Tanner Brother’s at their original restaurant in Plymouth. He tells us more about the menu choices and the thought that goes into it:
“The fish and chips are their signature staple so to speak - we’ve got our recipes and if it’s not broken then there’s no point in changing it! The fish we buy locally on a daily basis, the bread we buy from Jacker’s Bakery, at the moment we’ve got a beef and a lamb dish on, all seasonal and we keep as much local as possible.
“Everything has its time - we might change things every two weeks to a month, it just depends on how it goes, but it’s all selling which is good.” We certainly had a lovely evening at the Barbican Kitchen and plan to revisit again soon. We were able to truly experience the dishes that best represent Chris and James’ 20 years celebrations and can certainly see why these dishes have remained unchanged. Sorting out your legal requirements doesn’t have to be difficult, especially not when there are fantastic, local lawyers right on your doorstep. There’s no need to look any further - release any concerns you have with your legal needs by putting your faith in Wolferstans’ Plymstock.
A
ny solicitor can know the law and be good at what they do, but when dealing with these often stressful situations, you want to feel at ease throughout the entire process. Being able to walk into a good atmosphere, knowing that the person dealing with your legal requirements is both competent and approachable, is exactly what you should always be looking for in a solicitor - well look no further, because this legal team does exactly that. Wolferstans Plymstock is a local solicitor’s office that first opened its door in the 60s. They are the longest established solicitors based in the area, with other offices in Plympton and North Hill, Plymouth. With a
team of nine permanent staff who are all based locally, you’re sure to be with met with top quality service from individuals who have a great local knowledge. Their office isn’t just limited to the permanent staff based there, lawyers from other Wolferstans offices can also use the space to meet with clients. Rebecca Moloney - a family law solicitor - tells us how Wolferstans want to make everything as convenient for the client as possible. They won’t make you go out of your way to find expert legal advice if you can access it on your doorstep:
“We aim to provide every service here that we would at our main office on North Hill.”
“The whole point is that a client should be able to come to this office and be able to access every single service that the whole firm provides. It’s about bringing the service to the client and making sure that under this roof we can provide everything a client needs. “It’s about convenience too. It’s a pain having to travel into town, you want to be able to use your local solicitor and one that is familiar with the area too.”
Wolferstans can bring their service to you! The team will often also travel to meet clients at no extra cost. Some people may find it difficult to get to the office particularly if they’re getting older - and accessibility issues should not prevent clients from getting the legal advice they need. Rebecca Bawler - a Chartered Legal Executive - wants to ensure that no one is singled out: “We go wherever we need to go - it’s about accessibility and we want our clients to get advice if they need it. Usually, there is a reason behind it, and it’s difficult for them to get into the office, so we try to accommodate clients’ needs wherever we can.”

Make sure to contact your local Wolferstans’ branch to see what clinics they run.
Having been established in Plymouth for so long, Wolferstans want to continue to grow and invest in their future. The firm provides opportunities to students in Plymouth, to give them the best experience of what they have to offer. Most of the staff at Wolferstans Plymstock have worked for the firm for many years and they want to make sure they’re getting the best people from the local area. “Wolferstans is a really nice place to work.” Rebecca Moloney explains, “We’ve got a good atmosphere and we want to keep that going, and one of the reasons we’re so successful is because people like the service that we give. This is why it’s so important for us to be closely linked to the university, so we can carry that service down and let the students know exactly what we’re looking for.” It’s not just looking at what budding solicitors can bring to Wolferstans; the firm is very good at supporting their staff on an internal level. Rebecca Bawler was given the help she needed as an employee at Wolferstans: “I started in the Wolferstans’ general office, in the administration team, and the firm supported me in completing my CILex studies whilst working, and now I’m a Chartered Legal Executive - so it’s not just trainee solicitors and law students, they offer great internal support as well.”
Wolferstans has a special commitment with the Armed Forces, having helped them and their families for many years.
Meet the Plymstock team! Many members of Wolferstans are veterans or come from a service family, therefore they have a great underlying knowledge and a strong understanding of how the Armed Forces work. The company was awarded the Gold Award in national recognition of their commitment to the Armed Forces under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. They are the first law firm in the UK to receive the award.
Wolferstans is built on reputation. Having been around for 200 years, they have a lot of different accreditations that not every solicitor service has. The firm is always looking at growth. By being involved in the local community, they hope to raise the profile of the team. Caroline Pellow - an Associate and Solicitor - tells our team how they’re making more people aware of their presence in Plymstock:
With qualified staff, who have great legal and local knowledge, Pauline Anning - an Associate and Solicitor - explains why people are choosing Wolferstans over other law firms:
“We’ve been going out and meeting people in the local community recently to raise awareness of the team in Plymstock and trying to bridge the gap between Kingsbridge and here.
“We’re all qualified lawyers with a lot of experience. Local knowledge is useful. The long established relationships we have with other local businesses, having worked together for so many years, really helps our clients.”
“There are not many firms for people to go to in the South Hams and it’s much easier to travel to Plymstock than Plymouth for people living in areas like Modbury, Newton Ferrers, and Noss Mayo, Brixton and Yealmpton. We are just making more people aware that we are here.”

Sponsor an unwanted and abandoned dog or cat In common with a lot of re-homing centres we find that some dogs and cats stay in our care much longer than others. It can just be a case of being overlooked but more commonly it is because they have specialised behavioural needs that a lot of people don’t have the time for or experience to cope with. Your sponsorship helps us to provide all the love and care these special animals desperately need until they are lucky enough to find a safe new and forever home.

Keeping Fit & Keeping Local There are many different ways of getting in your 30-minutes of exercise a day, why not mix things up this Summer? Plymouth and its surrounding areas are home to some of the best indoor and outdoor activities that are sure to keep you fit and healthy in a variety of different ways.
T
he thought of spending half an hour of your day working up a sweat on a treadmill isn’t the most desirable way to spend your time. For most, the type of exercise that you do is what can make or break your workout session, because if you’re not enjoying it, then why bother? We’re telling you now, there are ways to keep fit and enjoy the process. Staying in good shape shouldn’t just be an aim to look good in time for the summer - it is important to look after yourself and your health, and people often forget that. We are all very much critical of our health and fitness regimes and the common saying of “I’ll start on Monday” is a constant setback for some. Keeping fit is important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, it doesn’t have to involve a 5 mile run every morning.
It really is the small changes that will make a difference to your lifestyle and how you stay active this summer. There are many health benefits to keeping fit that will make a big difference to how you keep healthy and fit. It is suggested that benefits of regular physical activity include: reduced risk of having a heart attack and ensuring a lower blood pressure and cholesterol level. Improved muscle and bone health is another benefit of staying fit. These are just some of the ways an active lifestyle can help you.
A number of studies have found that staying active helps depression and relieves stress. 32 July 2019
Exercise changes the levels of chemicals in your brain, such as serotonin, endorphins and stress hormones which help alleviate any extra strain on your body. Keeping fit also contributes to lifting your mood and improving your sleeping pattern, as well as helping to block negative thoughts or distract you from daily worries. To maintain health and reduce your risk of health problems, health professionals and researchers recommend a minimum of 30-minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most, preferably all, days. This however is merely a suggestion; the intensity of how you decide to keep fit lies entirely with you.
Doing any physical activity is better than doing none. If you currently do no or very little physical activity, start by doing some, and then gradually build up to the recommended amount. In Plymouth, we are very lucky to live in such a vibrant, open aired city where there are so many different indoor and outdoor activities to partake in this summer. From gym classes to outdoor sports activities, there is absolutely something for everyone to take part in to help stay fit. There are a variety of spaces to utilise to stay fit locally this summer throughout Plymouth. We are blessed to inhabit Dartmoor National Park on our doorstep with the incredible green spaces, as well as the spectacular coastal paths where you can walk for miles on end whilst remaining active. You could even opt to take part in water sports this summer;
