Pets
APRIL IS NATIONAL PET MONTH!
National Pet Month is a registered charity dedicated to encouraging animal lovers to celebrate their beloved furry friends.
T
hroughout April, the charity organises events around the country, from pet first aid courses to dog photography competitions, helping to raise money for animals in need. Now in its 28th year, National Pet Month promotes the health benefits of pet ownership, service animals and most importantly, responsible ownership.
Responsible PetPET Ownership RESPONSIBLE OWNERSHIP Owning a pet is a rewarding experience, but it also carries many responsibilities. When considering a pet, it’s essential to take into account finances, space and their personal needs. Although you may have your heart set on an Alaskan malamute, a big dog might be a poor choice for your studio apartment. DID YOU KNOW: In 2016, the total expenditure on pets and related products in the UK reached a massive 4.58 billion pounds?! Pets can be a burden on your personal finances, especially when accounting for unforeseen costs, such as unexpected vet bills. Whether you want to share your home with a cat, dog or smaller critter, your pet will require feeding, entertaining and health checkups.
they are brought into your care. When you adopt, any fees will be reinvested into the shelter, ensuring that unwanted pets receive the love and respect that they deserve. Finally, by adopting from a shelter, you can feel proud knowing that you are providing a pet with a second chance at a happy life.
Health Benefits HEALTH BENEFITS If you already own a pet, you’ll already be aware of the happiness they can bring to your life, but did you know that they can also benefit your health? Pets can have a positive influence on individuals who suffer from depression and other debilitating mental illnesses, offering motivation as well as relaxation. The companionship pets provide can be a source of comfort for their owners, providing a great way to reduce anxiety, with studies suggesting that pet owners have lower blood pressure in stressful situations. As well as positively impacting your mental health, pets can also encourage a healthier lifestyle through fitness and exercise. They provide a great incentive to leave the house and go for regular walks.
Adopting an animal, rather than buying from breeders, can often have many surprising benefits.
Aims for 2018 PAWESOME AFTERNOON TEA!
Although you may not be capable of providing the right environment for pet with specific needs due to neglect or abuse, there are animals available to suit every circumstance and experience level.
2017 saw the first year of Cats Protection’s Pawsome Afternoon Tea. With thousands of cat lovers from Penzance to Shetland hosting afternoon teas for their nearest and dearest, thousands of pounds was raised to help unwanted cats and kittens.
By adopting a pet, you also can save money, as shelters often microchip, vaccinate, spay or neuter pets before

There are a number of great charities in and around our city that do amazing things for animals in need. We couldn’t possibly outline every single one, (even though we would love too!) so we have highlighted a few below. Charities wouldn’t be able to function without kind donations, so why not do something great this month and raise money for an animal charity of your choice. Woodside Sanctuary Libbi our Editor with Frank and Flo
Starting in 1977, a group of like-minded friends decided to do something about the rising numbers of unwanted pets in Plymouth. Fast forward through some challenging times, Woodside became a fully fledged, registered charity. Its original aims have been built upon to now embrace animals other than cats and dogs. Woodside’s ethos is that caring for abandoned and abused pets within the sanctuary is, and always will be vital. Gables Farm

Welcoming in Spring with

Equine Rehabilitation
Sanctuary
REGISTERED CHARITY NUMBER : 1133116
Having been set up in 2000, Hoofbeats Sanctuary is a small charity funded entirely by donations and run by unpaid volunteers 365 days a year. And, since gaining charity status in 2009, Hoofbeats has only grown. Now having rescued and successfully rehomed over 100 horses and ponies, and with around 30 horses currently across two yards awaiting homes or being rehabilated, the Sanctuary’s founder tells of the latest developments. run as a herd, enabling them to interact, socialise and groom each other just as they would in the wild. “This is a lovely sight to see in the Spring; all the horses enjoy playing and running through the fields now winter is behind us.” With a new found spring in their step, Hoofbeats have even more to celebrate, as Publicity Manager Becca tells us. Having recently entered a competition run by a local social media and branding company, the Sanctuary have been lucky enough to win a powerful promotional video, courtesy of Plymouth business Âme.
Winter Woes According to Sharon, founder of Hoofbeats, “Winter has always been a difficult season for horsey folk and charities alike - with wet and cold weather meaning our horses require extra feeding and waterproof rugs to protect them against the elements.” With the snow causing havoc across the city just last month, the Hoofbeats’ founder tells us that despite the weather she was overwhelmed with support from local people. Receiving countless messages offering to help with accessing the horses and to carry out daily checks and de-ice the water troughs, Sharon jokes she could “only fit 7 (people) in my truck...but thanks to the volunteers I managed to get to to pick up, it made the jobs a lot easier “.
Sharon explains that long-term supporter ‘The Farmyard Cafe’ has been invaluable when it comes to these vital volunteers. “Being in close proximity to the Hoofbeats site, the cafe has enabled us to provide a warm and welcoming space for volunteers to use as a base. This also allows us to have rehoming meetings with people who are looking at giving one of our horses or ponies a forever loving home - all this by a warm fire and with a hot drink, which is great for wintery days!” The Farmyard has also been raising awareness for the Sanctuary and running countless fundraisers, with their latest annual Christmas raffle raising a fantastic £226 for Hoofbeats. “Our most exciting development is our charity tack shop”, Sharon is excited to tell us. The Farmyard Cafe have recently kindly donated a space for Hoofbeats to use free of charge; allowing the charity to sell any surplus horse equipment donated to raise vital funds. Over the winter, the team have been busy stocking the shop, welcoming a number of gratefully received donations and customers through the doors ever since. Stepping into Spring
It’s the help of volunteers like these, as well as charitable donations, that keep the Sanctuary running; allowing them to rescue and rehabilitate horses of all shapes and sizes.
12 April 2018
“We were so excited to win this opportunity. Hoofbeats is somewhat of an unknown charity right on Plymouth’s doorstep; we may be a small team, but we love what we do and we can’t wait to share with everyone what we’re all about!”

BUSINESS PROFILE It is obvious that K9 Meals on Wheels and K9 Splash Hydrotherapy are dedicated and compassionate. We speak to Tracy and Shane at their impressive hydrotherapy unit to see how it all started.
Sitting down with the owner, Shane- he tell us how in 1988, he started as a police officer for the Thames Valley Police in High Wycombe. “I was 27. I always wanted to be a police officer.” Shane applied for Thames Valley Police and they accepted him. Shane and his wife, who was also a police officermade the move for the position. In 1992, they were able to transfer back down to Devon and Cornwall, where Shane applied to become a dog handler in 1995. He was given a dog called Shogun, who was a fantastic long haired German Shepherd. “He was an amazing police dog. He was one of the most prolific thief catchers at the time”. Shane has had a number of police dogs since; Poppy, Dash, Shadow and Mac to name a few- some of which are retired with him today! Shane finished his policing in 2014 in Plymouth. His service was coming to an end, his dogs were of retirement age and he had other ideas brewing, so he decided to retire. Whilst in the Police Force, Shane was granted permission for a business interest so began his passion to supply friends and colleagues a quality nutritional dog food which took him to where he is today. In 2012, Shane came up with the name K9 Meals on Wheels. “I’m all about dogs really. We want them to have a good quality food – Meals, and we can deliver it- Wheels!”
Shane and Tracy met through their shared passion for all things pets at an agility show. Tracy, a qualified veterinary nurse, was a competitor in many of these agility shows, where Shane had a trade stand selling his dog food, natural treats and high quality joint aid . Tracy’s background and skills meant that she was a good team member to have on board. K9 Meals on Wheels is one of the South West’s biggest suppliers of Simpson’s Premium dog and cat food. Due to their ever growing customer base they have just had their largest stock delivery, a 15 tonne shipment! Shane tells us how he came across the versatile product, researched the ingredients and gave it to a few customers to trial, it was an instant hit and the feed back was excellent. Shane has built up a good relationship with the company over the years. “It’s a really good high quality product, and it’s UK made. I don’t want to stock other foods because I know what is in this product. I trust and believe in the Simpsons Premium range of foods.
“
“
K
9 Meals On Wheels don’t just want to sell you dog food, as a customer they offer a unique experience not available anywhere else locally. free food samples, free training, free general health advice, free delivery and always on the end of the phone or email.
K9 Meals on Wheels supply Woodside Animal Charity Trust with all of their cat & dog food, and are on hand to offer free training
So what makes the food special? Shane tells us that the ingredients are key, human grade and not meat derivative with low quality ingredients “We don’t like anything manmade in it, we don’t like chemically preserved products”. There is evidence to suggest that it can be harmful to our dogs, and some of the ingredients in dog food are banned from
Shane and Tracy
the human food chain. Shane says that tells him all he needs to know- “So why do we put it in our dog food? Because it’s cheaper, and will give the food an extended shelf life, some up to 2 years!! There are many benefits from choosing Simpsons. Grain in food is becoming a problem with a lot of dogs, so Simpsons have a grain free product which can help with some skin and digestive problems. ”Simpsons also have a range to help with weight loss, coupled with regular exercise. The whole range of products also have a joint package in the food. K9 Meals on Wheels offer a free home visit for you to talk about your pet’s diet. They ask pet owners to be completely honest and when they are its clear to see where the diet is going wrong “Shane has seen some horrific pet diets over the years, including Frosties every morning and porridge with golden syrup! Obesity is a massive issue for dogs in the UK at the moment, and Shane outlines the importance of a good balanced diet for your pet. Looking around us, the hydrotherapy unit is very impressive. A 5 x 2.5 metre pool heated to 30 degrees dominates the room. A beautiful dog called Banksy comes bounding in for a session on the Treadmillso we all abandon the interview to go and watch him strut his stuff! Shane tells us that the treadmill is the only one in Plymouth, and we watch as it slowly

- K9 MEALS ON WHEELS AND HYDROTHERAPY fills up with warm water whilst Banksy waits patiently to get started. Tracy controls the incline and speed by an I phone app. It is all very professional, and it is clear that the dogs absolutely love it here. We are keen to find out how the hydrotherapy came about, so we leave Banksy to his treatment and sit back down with Shane. “It came from two customers actually. They just happened to see us at a show and they said- why don’t you start up a hydrotherapy unit for dogs?!” and that sowed the seed. Shane spoke to Tracy about it, who was working as a veterinary nurse for the PDSA at the time. The pair did some surveying around local vet practices and the outcome was fantastic. “Some of them knew Tracy because of her history within the profession, but as soon as we proposed the idea the response was-
when can you start?! They said that they would send us the clients, and it was about time Plymouth had a hydrotherapy unit.” They moved into their new unit in Newnham Industrial Estate on the 19th of September 2015. K9 Splash Hydrotherapy offer fitness swims for agility or working dogs, puppy swims, and hydrotherapy treatment for an array of conditions such as arthritis, weight loss, spinal problems and rehabilitation from an injury or surgery. Veterinary referral is mandatory for an appointment with Tracy in the pool or treadmill, regardless of whether they have a condition or not. “it’s all veterinary referral which is one of the conditions of being a member of the CHA (Canine Hydrotherapy Association) ensuring your pet is fit for treatment and in safe hands. This also helps if a dog or cat comes in with a condition

such as arthritis- Tracy can get hold of the pet’s relevant medical files and come up with a tailored treatment schedule and formulate a course of recovery. Shane reflects on the transition from the police to doing what he does now. “It was quite hard to make the decision to retire. But I have a very different life now and I am probably doing more hours than I was in the police service!” He talks about his loyal client base that he has built up over the years. “We are well known locally, people trust us. I just enjoy my work, it’s very fulfilling. Watching customers faces when things go right makes it all worth it”.

Banksy using the treadmill with Tracy
This is just a big success story for us really; I have to pinch myself sometimes
So what does the future hold? Shane says he has been very taken aback by how successful the business has been, quickly as well. “I do think about it, but I’ve got to reign myself in a little bit. We are always looking for the next stage so there could be something in the future, we are going to have to wait and see!”

BUSINESS PROFILE From a local security guard job in Tesco Metro, to a self made business man with over 120 staff members .The founder of the business, Kenyon Barker, had been in the security industry for a number of years before deciding to form his own company. We chat with Kenyon to find out what he had to go through to get to where he is today.
“I formed my own security company because I’ve worked in that area for years. I have seen the good and bad companies. This gave me the motivation to decide the only way to bring the security industry above and beyond the standard set was to form my own company and be selective on the quality of staff we offer to our clients”. “My first security job was when I was aged 21. I worked at Tesco Metro in Plymouth town centre. It was interesting! It was all new to me at the time”. As Kenyon found out, Security can of course be a risky profession. In just his first week of employment, he was attacked by a customer attempting to steal goods from the store. “I had no official training, but when somebody is coming at you the body has three natural
reactions, fight, flight or freeze. Mine was fight in that moment!”
The human body has three natural reactions, fight, flight or freeze
Luckily, Kenyon was not hurt in the process and after working his position for 8 months, family matters meant that Kenyon made the move to Northumberland. He was eventually employed by Aspers Casino in Newcastle. “At this point, I had my Close Protection license. There were a lot of footballers coming in, and a lot of high end clients wanting to spend money. It was a high profile job”.
Kenyon tells us of a major incident that happened at a Phoenix bar when he was 25 years old. “I was working for Phoenix Security, a very professional agency”. Kenyon and another Security operative were attacked by a group of 15 individuals”. This resulted in me being off my feet for over a year”.
“
“
Speaking to Kenyon, it is clear to see that respect and professionalism are his top priorities when it comes to his business. With offices based in Newton Abbot, KB Security has teams in both London and Plymouth to offer security to a range of nationwide events.

ith over 10 years in the industry, KB Security and Training have worked on festivals, private events, close protection and corporate events. The business has had a natural growth since its inception, due to Kenyon building its reputation as a professional, reputable and friendly firm.
I live by a motto, it is what it is. Life is always going to throw things at you. Stand there and just take it on the chin “Of course, that night I took it on most of my body! Cuts, bruises and bones, they heal. I was in hospital for 3 weeks and had physiotherapy for a while following on from that”. At this point, Kenyon was unable to work so had to take the time out to rebuild himself. Resilience is clearly something Kenyon has in abundance, as this didn’t stop him from pursuing his career path further. After building up his employment portfolio rapidly

through his diverse range of jobs, Kenyon explains that he was working in Close Protection abroad when everything changed. Kenyon’s relationship with his wife at the time had failed, and after attempts to rekindle for the sake of the couple’s two children wasn’t working out, Kenyon’s ex-wife moved up north with the children. “I was a complete mess. I am physically resilient yes, but mentally- I think everybody has a breaking point”. At this point in his life, Kenyon was living and working in Cornwall. “It was 9 months after a clean break with my ex-partner when she had started to go downhill”. 5 years ago, at the age of 27- Kenyon made the decision to quit everything and fight for custody of his children. “I had absolutely nothing for them. No clothes, no bed for them to sleep in. My dad was amazing; he helped financially so I could get myself started up again”. Kenyon took on a role as a health care assistant at a nursing home in Plympton, as the hours meant he could spend more

KB SECURITY AND TRAINING
Kenyon had worked for Expedient in 2012 at the Olympics. “It was such a great experience. Expedient are like family to me now. They helped me set up my own business and continue to support me to this day”. Expedient were Kenyon’s only client in the early stages- so he was very picky on staff as he was keen to impress. “I am not an interview person. I like to see people working, see what they can do”. Having a small team enabled Kenyon time to learn how to grow and run the business successfully.
“
“
Being the managing director of KB Security and Training LTD is a challenging, yet rewarding experience
Kenyon prides himself on the fact that, until recently he hasn’t had to advertise to gain work or staff. He explains that this is down to the reputation he has built for both himself and his company. “Word got out that I was a good person to work for, so I had people approaching me”. In regards to taking on new staff, Kenyon
“I keep my staff happy and that is extremely important. We do a lot of travelling, a lot of time away from our families. I have to make sure that what they do is acknowledged and rewarded”.
“
Respect is very high on my list of priorities, I respect people and I expect to be respected in return. Because of this my team is like one big family, we have that understanding
“If anyone needs me, they can call up at stupid o clock and I will do everything I can to help them. I will always be a friend first, but my business comes just beforethey don’t understand what I mean by that but it makes sense to me!”
All together I have 80 SIA and on average about 80 stewards at present. Steve Middleton is my operations manager, and his partner Jayne Elphick does my HR. Without them I would have buckled a long time ago. I took them on this year and they’ve been a real asset to the company”. KB Security offer their own training programmes. Kenyon has a contract with Western College, meaning that he can help people through the necessary courses and offer them an application form to potentially work for him if successful. “I train staff myself. First aid, PIsecurity is your first point of call. I want my staff to be confident and react straight away in the event of someone approaching them for help”. “All stewards hold, or are working towards their NVQ level 2 in spectator safety. All Supervisors
who hold door supervisor licence have, or are working towards their level 3 and all managers have or are working towards their level 4 spectator safety qualification”.
“
KB Security was first formed when Kenyon had been working as a healthcare assistant for a year. He decided to set up his own company, working self employed. “I was approached by a previous employer- Expedient Security, to come and be a manager for them”.
explains the importance of a good personal image. “I think this comes from my military background. If you walk in looking like you’ve never seen an iron, it isn’t going to work. I want my guys to look presentable and respectful”.
“
time at home. “I needed to get my children sorted; I needed to get myself sorted”.
“
The level of qualification and constant training enables us to give a better quality service for all events
Kenyon tells us how, for the past two years they’ve been brought in to run Arcadia at Glastonbury. For anyone who isn’t familiar with the set up, it really is a spectacular event! “I absolutely love it. There are huge risk assessments involved in something as big as Glastonbury”. Kenyon explains how the security profession is extremely reactive, and you can’t anticipate anything. “When you get a rush from the main stage you have to prepare for that. 20,000 people already there, and in 10 seconds you’re going to get a surge of another 20,000. You have to constantly think on your feet”. So what does the future hold for KB Security? Kenyon explains that he would love to run his own event. “I would like provide the entire security, solely through KB. It would run under my banner, and my logo”. Kenyon also tells us that he would like to break into the Plymouth market a bit more. “I have successful contracts in London. Plymouth is my home. We have contracts with local boxing events but I would love to grow this further”. With Kenyon’s resilience, determination and professionalism, there is absolutely no doubt that if he continues to grow his business, with the help of his team- these goals will soon become reality.

ELMER PUTS ST LUKES AHEAD OF THE HERD
W
hen it comes to encouraging more open discussion around the sensitive subjects of death and dying, St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth is leading the herd, with a fun and enchanting trail that’s set to add a splash of colour across our city and get people talking. In collaboration with independent children’s books publisher Andersen Press and creator of public art events Wild in Art, St Luke’s is bringing Elmer the patchwork elephant – the iconic, muchloved storybook character created by Devon-born author and artist David McKee – to Plymouth for Elmer’s Big Parade in 2019, 30 years since Andersen Press first published the Elmer story.
For ten weeks over summer 2019, the eye-catching Elmer’s Big Parade will be adding colour and fun to the city and surrounding areas, where St Luke’s cares for patients with progressive lifelimiting illnesses and supports their families and carers. The 40 unique elephant sculptures, each painted by an established or emerging local artist, will form a trail that will both attract new visitors to Plymouth, curious to see what Elmer is up to, and encourage residents to explore areas they might not have ventured to before.
26 April 2018
The sculptures will help people ‘navigate’ the city while increasing awareness of St Luke’s, de-mystifying death, dying and hospice care, and raising vital funds to help the charity look after more patients who need its compassionate care. The project also includes an interactive app to help people follow the herd, detailing the sculpture locations and enabling them to join the Elmer community by uploading selfies as they go.
Running alongside the trail will be an engaging interactive educational programme for Key Stage 2 and 3 school children that will aid their understanding of death and dying in an ageappropriate way.
people create lasting memories and at St Luke’s we are very proud that we can do this for many patients and their families.
“We’re really excited about Elmer’s Big Parade. As well as being full of fun that will spread a big grin across Plymouth and the wider area, it will encourage meaningful discussion about death, dying and bereavement, subjects we often shy away from but would all benefit from being more open about”.
Elmer’s Big Parade will be formally launched on 21 March 2018 at Ocean Studios, when a bespoke Elmer designed by popular local artist Brian Pollard will take pride of place alongside a ‘classic’ bright patchwork Elmer. Following the launch, artists will be invited to submit their designs from June 2018, with the sculpture trail opening in July 2019. Speaking about the project, St Luke’s Chief Executive Steve Statham said: “An elephant never forgets and that’s a key message for us, too. We want to help

Charlie Langhorne, Director, Wild in Art, added: “By joining forces with Andersen Press and creating a blank 3D canvas inspired by the famous patchwork elephant, we just know that this big parade will have a positive impact on Plymouth’s residents and visitors, and of course St Luke’s.
With similar parades featuring Elmer in Ipswich and Tyne & Wear too, we’re excited to be turning the country patchwork for fantastic causes in 2019.” Paul Black, PR Director, Andersen Press, added: “We are delighted to be working with St Luke’s and Wild in Art on this project, and cannot wait to see the colourful Elmers around Plymouth
to sponsor one of the 40 unique Elmer sculptures that are set to enchant and inspire. Ultimately, these sculptures will be auctioned off to raise money for St Luke’s, ensuring a fitting legacy for the people and communities of Plymouth and the surrounding areas which benefit from the charity’s outstanding care.

“to bring this amazing trail to Plymouth, a place so close to the heart of David McKee, Elmer’s creator, is really the icing on the cake”. “In addition to being a great free and healthy day out for all the family as they walk the trail, it will also attract new visitors to our city, raising Plymouth’s profile and bringing economic benefits, as well as showcasing a wealth of local artistic talent.”

STRESS LESS THIS APRIL STRESS AWARENESS MONTH As host to Stress Awareness Month, the focus of April is to get people talking about the common mental illness that affects 44% of us. Stress is the feeling of being under too much mental or emotional pressure, with work related stressors being the biggest cited cause. We outline the reason why you may become stressed, and a number of ways in which you can significantly reduce and manage your stress levels.
H
ave you ever found yourself in a situation where your to-do list seems endless, deadlines are fast approaching and you find yourself saying ‘Eek! I feel stressed!’? But what is stress really, and how does it affect us?
have an effect in the short term, or be a constant recurring worry for an individual. When the stress becomes more prolonged, this can develop into Chronic Stress, where you feel you have little or no control.
It’s your nervous system that responds to stress, releasing adrenaline and cortisol hormones around the body in a response known as the “fight or flight” reflex. However, your nervous system isn’t very good at distinguishing between emotional and physical threats, which can explain why stress can have a number of triggering causes.
Often, recognising the trigger of your stress can help prevent Chronic Stress in the long term. By trying to better the situation for yourself or changing the way your think about being stressed, you may be able to become less affected by pressured situations in the first place.
We often think of stressors as being negative events, but even positive situations can cause you stress. Anything that puts high demand on you can be stressful, including planning a wedding or holiday, buying a house or receiving a promotion.
A rising stress level can cause or exacerbate a number of physical symptoms including:
Nonetheless, both positive and negative external factors can influence your stress levels. Many are common, including:
In addition, not all stress is caused by physical external factors. Stress can also be internal or self-generated, caused by worrying excessively about something that may or may not happen, negative self-thought or having irrational, pessimistic thoughts about life. With such a variety of possible stressors, every person’s stress varies. The causes of stress can

Adapting your life is important in stress reduction, as the more your emergency stress system is activated, the easier it becomes to trigger and the harder it becomes to shut off. Sometimes, its not obvious what is causing your stress, meaning you are subconciously suffering. Until physical symptoms begin to show, you can be unaware of the effect something is having to your mental and physical wellbeing. This is why it is important to know what the symptoms of stress are.
If you’re stressed about an emotional situation, your body can react just as strongly as if you’re facing a true life-or-death scenario.
• Major life changes • Bereavement • Illness or injury • Work or School • Relationship difficulties • Financial problems • Being too busy/having too much to do • Caring for a loved one • Commuting • Children and family
This aside, sometimes talking to a family member or close friend about your worries can help. It has been found that a strong support network can work as a fantastic buffer against long term stress, and those you talk to may be able to offer advice or help you make changes.
It is common to get stressed about being stressed - acknowledging you’re getting agitated by pressure and then worrying about how you will escape a cycle of stress or long-term contuining stressor, such as money.
It’s best to remember that what causes stress can depend on your perception of it. Something that’s stressful to you may not faze someone else; they may even enjoy it or find it motivating, or it may just go unnoticed.

• Aches and pains • Heart disease • Problems sleeping • Tiredness • Headaches • Skin conditions such as eczema & acne • Weight problems • Digestive problems • Reproductive issues • Damage to your immune system, which can cause more frequent cold and flu • Diarrhoea or constipation • Nausea, dizziness • Chest pain, rapid heart rate • Thinking and memory problems It is important to recognise your own personal stress symptoms, as without recognition, your tendency to become stressed can rise. Not only are there physical affects of stress, but your mental health can suffer too - a consistent growing level of stress can leave you vulnerable to other mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

If your wondering when it’s time to ask for professional advice, whether that be your GP or a counsellor, you should act when: • Stress dominates your life. • You are seeing signs of stress affecting your physical health • You are using unhealthy coping methods to deal with stress such as an addiction. • You are experiencing angry outbursts that are affecting those around you
your body to release endorphins, or “happy hormones”. This natural high will decrease the amount of stress related hormones in your body, enabling you to worry less post gym session. It’s been found that just 30 minutes per day of walking can also help boost your mood and reduce stress. If taking a stroll through the lovely countryside around us wasn’t relaxing enough, why not try a gentle exercise like meditation, yoga or tai chi, which touches on both physical and mental exercise?
Making changes in order to help relieve stress doesn’t have to be a massive ordeal or break the bank. With a whole range of simple and affordable solutions to your stress issues, we give you a low down on how to beat the stress before it hits hard.
Does your life seem to revolve around work with little or no down time/release? Taking up a new relaxing hobby or picking up an old one again can allow you some time to unwind. It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant or expensive - you just need to enjoy it!
IN A TRANCE Hypnotherapy is a useful tool to help you address your stress levels. If you’re unsure about the causes of your stress, seeing a hypnotherapist can help identify the root of your body’s reaction. After discovering where your stress has originated from, you can then agree on and work towards a goal with the hypnotherapist, including how you would like to feel and what you’d like to do in life without stress preventing you from doing so.
Cutting out caffeine can help you to relax. Instead of going at a million miles an hour in an attempt to get as much done as possible (and stressing yourself out in the process!) can be counterproductive; instead try to maintain a sense of calm while going about tasks.
Counselling is a fantastic way to talk through your stress with someone who knows all about it. Often recommended by Doctors, Counselling is often the most effective way of identifying what triggers your stress and any stress-related cycles you may be subject to. As well as this, counsellors are able to give you some useful coping strategies and mindfulness tips in order to revaluate stress. This is important, as changing the way you think about and deal with stress is imperative to lessening the problem before it grows.
OTHER TOP TIPS
EAT WELL Diet is linked to everything these days. Ensuring you get a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals can boost the immune system and lower blood pressure, lessening the affect stress can have on your body. While comfort foods can boost your mood temporarily, often these contain high amounts of sugar (for example chocolate) which can cause a subsequent frustrating crash of energy and lack of motivation later in the day.
CALL A PROFESSIONAL IN
Hypnotherapy for stress can start to work in as little as a few sessions, but this entirely depends on your reaction to the therapy. Hypnotherapy can help to not only ease your stress, but make you feel more relaxed and confident in situations you may otherwise struggle with.
Reduce coffee intake to 2 cups a day or chose decaffeinated, and avoid cola drinks which contain both caffeine and stimulants.
GET EXCERCISING It’s a well known fact that exercising causes
Take some time out. Whether you escape for a weekend or a week, abroad or closer to home, getting away from your stressor can allow you to reflect and put your worries into perspective. Even if you just take some annual leave and spend time with friends and family or make time for that new found hobby! Nothing is more relaxing than treating yourself to a spa day, and if you saw our review of China Fleet Country Club last issue, you’ll know how de-stressed you can be after just a few hours! Therapeutic massages can also help to relieve deep muscular tension, so get yourself booked in. Finances can be a major cause of stress for many people. ith spring just around the corner and the sun beginning to shine once again, there’s no better time to embrace the great outdoors – and to shed the bad habits that inevitably creep in over the winter months.
5 reasons to get outside this spring
It’s time to wave goodbye to nights in on the sofa with an industrial-sized box of chocolates, making way instead for long walks, picnics and other outdoor pursuits.
After a long winter, Vitamin D levels are at an all-time low, leaving many of us feeling sapped of energy and in need of a boost.
keep the kids happy. It’s a great place to get a bit of exercise, immerse yourself in nature, and get a bit of fresh air.”
Getting some fresh air is more important than ever as we head into spring, and with a raft of benefits to be gained from just a small amount of time outdoors each day, there are plenty of reasons to head out this weekend.
The benefits of getting outdoors this spring are greater than you might think, so to get you motivated and pulling on those walking shoes, Mark Simpson shares five crucial reasons to enjoy the beautiful Devon Countryside over the coming weeks – whatever the weather.
put off if it’s still a bit chilly, as exercising in the cold is also good for you. Your body uses more energy to regulate your core temperature, which then raises your heartrate and boosts the number of calories you burn. It’s also a super way to burn off those extra calories consumed over the indulgent winter months!
FRESH AIR Outdoor air is generally far less polluted than indoor air, especially if you seek out natural areas with lots of plant life, such as woods and open fields. After a long winter of being cooped up indoors and sharing enclosed spaces with others, getting outside gives your body a much-needed break – so wrap up warm, get outside and breathe in that fresh, clean air! Mark Simpson, Managing Director at award-winning Ashburton adventure park, campsite and popular walking spot, River Dart Country Park, says that spring is peak season for walkers in search of some rejuvenation and enjoyment – as well as those looking for some more outdoor activity after the winter months. “At this time of year, it’s great to see the sun coming out after a long, cold winter, as well as the renewed enthusiasm people seem to have for the great outdoors. We see lots of people out for a stroll here at the park, whether it’s with their families, friends, or their dogs.
VITAMIN D Vitamin D deficiencies are surprisingly common, thanks to reduced exposure to sunlight as we spend more time indoors. Vitamin D plays a critical role in our health and wellbeing, and a lack of it can leave us feeling tired, lethargic and low in mood – but stepping outside even for just 20 minutes a day now that spring is upon us can make all the difference and have you feeling better in no time.
“Spring is a beautiful time for wildlife, regardless of weather conditions. A long walk or a wander can be just as much fun come rain or shine, especially with kids – just make sure you’ve got both your waterproofs and your sun cream, as being prepared is key!
EXERCISE
“We’re lucky to be set in extensive grounds, with an array of beautifully scenic woodland trails to wander round and lots of adventure playgrounds and activities to

IMPROVE YOUR MOOD The shorter days and darker evenings are known to have a negative effect on our moods, but now that the sun is about and setting that little bit later each day, it’s a great time to get outside and expose yourself to its rays.
Soaking up some sunlight is one of the best and fastest ways to boost your mood. The great outdoors can do more than just boost your mood and taking time out of your day to immerse yourself in nature can also work wonders for your stress levels. BROODY TO BABY AND BEYOND
SUPPORTING INDIVIDUAL PARENTING JOURNEYS BY CONNECTING TO LOCAL BUSINESSES
B
roody to Baby and Beyond is an exciting new business based in Plymouth. Started by Laura Copestake, a local mum of two young children, BBB has been designed to help parents and parents-to-be connect more easily with local businesses and organisations providing valuable support or services along the path of their individual parenting journeys. Laura says ‘as a parent I was so frustrated that the only way I seemed to hear about really good local groups and services was by chatting to other mums or spotting a random Facebook like. Even after that I struggled to find quality reviews and useful opinions to go by”. “I felt like I was missing out on loads of great stuff and thought that there had to be a better and easier way for parents of the 21st Century! That’s when I decided to start Broody to Baby and Beyond”.
With a constantly expanding Directory on their website broodytobabyandbeyond. co.uk and a parenting event which will be held at the Plymouth Guildhall on Sunday 22nd April, Broody to Baby and Beyond connects parents with local businesses and organisations both online and face-to-face. Laura is seeking support from local businesses and organisations who are passionate about the parents of Plymouth and want to get involved with BBB to achieve its goals.
things more so than individual products. But if you’re looking for anything from pregnancy scans to face painters then BBB have got you covered. The Broody to Baby and Beyond Parenting Event is set to be a jam-packed day in the Plymouth Guildhall. With lots of interactive stands in the Great Hall including Water Babies and Little Star Images, the first 200 Guests will receive goody bags containing freebies and offers.
There will be Live Demonstration Sessions from local groups including Baby Sensory, Diddi Dance, Toddlersense and Gym Bubbas which are free for your little ones to join in (*spaces are limited, spectators are welcome) and refreshments will also be available. “We decided to do the demonstration sessions as it can be time consuming and costly to attend trial sessions for all of the groups that you might be interested in. These are an opportunity to sample what’s on offer from multiple groups in one go and it’s all included in your ticket price”. But that’s not all… The highlight of the day for the sleep-deprived parents of Plymouth is sure to be an exclusive seminar from Christine Treharne, Sleep Consultant and owner of Goodnight Baby, who was recently featured in the Plymouth
Herald as a ‘Miracle Worker’. Christine has helped over 300 Local Families desperate for a night’s sleep to solve their bedtime woes and get their babies sleeping the whole night through. Her presentation ‘Good Night BabyEvery Child’s Birth Right’ will be a stepby-step guide to a great night’s sleep for the whole family. Complete with question and answer session and usually priced at £60 per consultation this really is one not to be missed! “I was introduced to Christine by a friend after I returned to work and my youngest decided she no longer liked sleep! My Husband and I have nicknamed her ‘The Guru’ and people still don’t believe me when I tell them that both of my girls now sleep 12 hours through every night!” “When Christine said she would love to come along to the launch and share all her secrets I couldn’t believe it. I would urge any parents who want more sleep to come along on the 22nd. It really works, you won’t regret it!” adds Laura.
Also attending the Launch Event are Sharon and Ferda of The Crescent Acupuncture Clinic. They will be discussing the various treatments available to help with natural
“To create a comprehensive Online Directory of Services for local parents as well as provide an opportunity for parents to see what is available for themselves, meet with local providers and ask any questions they might have in a no-pressure or obligation setting at their launch event in April”. With the success of National Exhibitions such as the Baby Show, there is a clear demand for an arena to showcase Support and Services specifically for Parents and Families.
