spring CLEAN

As soon as the sun begins to make more of an appearance, something inside of us tells us, it’s time for a thorough clean of the house! We have gathered the best tips to keep your home clean and tidy.

Y

ou know the saying ‘Tidy kitchen, tidy mind’. This goes for not only the kitchen but all of the rooms in your house. When you have clutter-free space, you instantly feel calmer and more relaxed, and by having less clutter, it becomes easier to tidy up every day.

It is important to be mindful when clearing out your unwanted belongings as it will just add to an ever-increasing landfill problem.

When doing a clear out, make 4 piles; Bin, recycle, give away and put away.

Bin-

The bin is for anything that cannot be recycled and is broken or very used, however, this should be a last resort.

Recycle - Clothes and shoes can be

recycled by various retailer-run recycling programmes or at your clothes and shoes local recycling bin. Broken items of furniture or damaged electrical appliances

can be taken to your local recycling centre. If you are unsure where your local recycling centre or bin is, head to www. recyclenow.com, where they have a useful search tool to find out what types of items you can recycle and where.

Before throwing anything out, ask yourself if you could make anything new from the item. Upcycling is a great way to turn unwanted items into something tailored to your style. Whether that be a dress that you’d like to sew into a top or a cupboard that needs some updating.

This is not only an eco-friendly way of adding new life to old items, but it can also be a lot of fun and you can learn a new skill along the way.

If you are unsure about upcycling, there are plenty of inspirational and educational videos on home DIY’s on YouTube to avoid any mistakes.

Give Away-

Anything that you don’t use that isn’t faulty or too damaged can go in this pile. When making this pile, think about who you want to give or sell it to.

Charity shops are always after new clothes to sell and they will happily take your unwanted belongings. You can take your clothes to your local charity shop or a charity shop in particular that you’d like to support once they are open on the 12th of April. You can also deliver your items to a charity of your choice free of postage charge. Charities such as British Heart Foundation are asking you to use their freepost service and other charities have asked you to hold on to your items until the shops can re-open.

Somebody in your family or a close friend might take it off your hands and put it to good use, it’s always worth asking them.

If it is in good condition, you could sell it on various 2nd hand shopping sites such as; eBay, Vinted, Depop, Gumtree or Shpock. Make sure the images are clear, the description is honest and don’t forget about the postage and packaging costs.

Put Away- And finally, anything you

still need but not for a few months can go into storage. To make things easier for your future self, put the items into a reusable heavy-duty plastic box/ bag or a large cardboard box and write exactly what is inside. You may think you have a great memory, but a few months will pass, and you will have completely forgotten what’s inside!

Home Dusting should be done frequently, and it really helps if your space is clear of clutter to get the job done quicker. Along with dusting, a thorough vacuum around the whole house will help to lift the carpets and get rid of dust and dirt.

Along with your allpurpose spray, use the natural properties of lemons to your advantage.

Wipe away any bad smells from the fridge with a slice of lemon and give it a thorough clean getting rid of any bacteria with the all-purpose cleaner. Take all of the contents out of the fridge, if you have a large fridge, take out sections at a time to avoid the food getting warm. I would recommend doing this just before a food shop as there will be less food in the fridge.

Putting the things, you use frequently away correctly is just as important. Now that you have cleared your unwanted belongings, try to put things back in an organised manner. Bring items you use frequently to the front, so they are easily accessible and try to hide messy items.

Depending on the items, often you can organise and hide messy belongings by using different types of storage items.

Built-in storage, desk organisers, cable organisers, storage-friendly furniture, decorative baskets and different sized storage boxes are just some examples of storage to keep your house looking tidy.

Now that the clutter has been tackled, it’s time to get cleaning.

Lemony fresh microwave-

You may think you need a different cleaning product for every different surface in your house but despite what Mrs Hinch says, constantly buying plastic bottles is not good for the planet and it also adds unnecessary clutter. Stick to one multi-surface cleaner and cloth for the whole house and only buy purposemade products when you need them.

Even better still, you can purchase reusable glass bottles to avoid plastic and opt for products such as, multipurpose refill sachets by Ocean Saver or concentrated disinfectant such as Zoflora which you only need to use a small amount at one time. Once you have used up all of your other cleaning products and correctly recycled the bottles, you will have a clean and tidy cupboard under the sink.

If you are really struggling to find some motivation to clean, put some upbeat music on, or attempt to clean whilst you’re waiting for the dinner to cook in the oven.

More often than not, you will be surprised how quickly things can be cleaned when there is a time limit.

When cleaning the inside of the microwave, cut up a lemon and put it in a bowl of water, set the microwave to 2 minutes or until the water is boiling and the glass is steamed up then leave the water in the microwave to cool down. Once it’s cool, take it out and give the inside and outside a wipe and it should now smell lemony fresh!

Wash your household fabrics-

Check the label and follow the correct washing guidelines to ensure you don’t damage the item. Having clean fabrics around the house will not only kill any odour and bacteria but it will also give off a nice smell.

The oven is the one household appliance that we all dread to clean as there are hard-to-reach areas and they get very greasy. Depending on your oven, there will be an instructions manual on how to clean it, so we recommend following this to ensure the best results for your oven.

Once you finished cleaning the main oven and hobs, don’t forget about the extractor fan. There is often a detachable element that enables you to clean it thoroughly.

After you have tackled the house, don’t forget to give your car a little spring clean too!

This Earth Day, the World turns its focus to Climate Change.

ver the past 12 months, the pandemic has dominated the news but another issue has been just as important and it’s an issue that we must not forget to keep fighting even during this tough time - Climate Change. April 22nd is Earth Day, the day aims to raise awareness and educate people worldwide about climate change and global warming.

Many people are still unsure what climate change is, how it affects them and how they can help make a difference so here are five facts, five myths, and five ways you can help make a difference.

Fact 1, Deforestation

When forests are cleared or burnt they release carbon dioxide, deforestation is responsible for 12 percent of all global greenhouse gas emissions. Deforestation impacts 1.6 billion rural people worldwide who rely on forests for their livelihoods.

of a football field and more than half the world’s tropical forests have been destroyed since 1960. a leading cause of deforestation is commercial agriculture, this industry accounts for forty percent of all deforestation.

Floods, heatwaves, droughts, and rising sea levels are all having devastating consequences on people’s lives.

Fact 2, Fighting Climate Change will Improve Livelihoods

Climate Change is making our planet warmer at a faster rate compared to the previous 10,000 years, this warming has left many animals unable to escape to cooler climates to avoid extinction.

One-third of all animals and plant species could be extinct by 2070 because of the changes in the atmosphere caused by anthropogenic climate change. The latest research by scientists shows that humans are responsible for bringing about a sixth mass extinction event.

Resorting degraded forests could create 39 jobs per million dollars spent, which might not sound like many jobs but that’s a job-creation rate more than six times higher than the oil and gas industry. Every dollar that is currently invested in land restoration generates on average 10 times that amount in benefits. Creating jobs that help to restore the planet naturally will benefit people worldwide for this generation and generations to come.

On December 12th, 2015 countries came together in Paris to address climate change and the Paris Agreement was born. The agreement, which was signed by 195 countries, aimed to reduce emissions of gases that contribute to global warming. The objective of the agreement was to limit greenhouse gas emissions to levels that would prevent global temperatures from increasing more than 2 degrees above the temperature benchmark set before the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.

Since the signing of the agreement, scientists have discovered that the given the risks to our planet, and aim for 1.5 degrees limit is necessary.

Bonus Fact If climate change is not tackled, parts of Plymouth could be underwater by 2050!

Myth 1, The Earth’s Climate Has Always Changed.

The Earth is 4.5 billion years old and while in that time the climate has changed a lot, the highest temperatures ever recorded have taken place since 2001. Rises in temperature that would normally happen over hundreds of years are now happing over decades. These higher temperatures correspond with increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide levels have been increasing since the Industrial Revolution and now human activity such as burning coal, transport, and deforestation is producing even more.

These human activities are why the current climate changes are referred to as manmade (anthropogenic).

Myth 2, It’s Still Cold So It Can’t Be Real

Whilst some places on planet Earth are still cold, global warming is causing our planet’s surface temperature to increase.

This increase means that extreme weather such as hurricanes, floods, and droughts more likely and more severe. Here in the UK, we are seeing more wet weather and more wind…remember a time when we didn’t have a storm each month?

Step 2, Green Up Your Home

Myth 3, Renewable Energy - All A Money Making Scheme

In recent years a lot of energy suppliers have slowly started to offer their customers renewable energy. Whilst renewable energy in its infancy was more expensive, no one could have predicted how fast the price of renewables fell. Solar and onshore wind energy is actually cheaper to produce than energy from fossil fuels. This means it can be cheaper for you to fuel your home using cleaner energy, that’s a win for you and the planet.

Myth 4, All The Animals Will Just Adapt

Some of the animals will adapt, history has shown us that animals do move or adapt to suit their current environment. Some species are already showing signs of adapting to deal with the drastic changes in our climate. Unlike previous centuries, the transformations in our climate are now much quicker and many species just cannot adapt quickly enough to keep up with the changing environment.

Around 26% of our carbon emissions come from our home energy so what can you do to help.

Check your boiler, windows, and insulation and see if it’s up to date with the new green standards, if it’s not you may qualify for a government scheme to help you green your home. Check your energy supplier, many of the major energy suppliers now offer 100% renewable energy, which may even be at a cheaper rate than your current fossil fuel! Turn off those lights, phone chargers, TVs, and games consoles, even on standby these naughty appliances are still eating up energy. Get a smart meter installed so you can keep track of your energy spending habits, this one is not just great for the planet but your wallet as well.

Myth 5, It’s Not Our Fault, It’s All Because of China

China is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases but it is also currently one of the largest investors in renewable energies. China’s much-needed investment in green energy is in a bid to clean up air pollution in its major cities.

The UK has a big fossil fuel spending habit, our government provides subsidies to the companies who provide this dirty fossil fuel energy, we actually spend £10.5 billion a year supporting this industry.

Health & Leisure Step 3, Food, Glorious Food

Animal agriculture is one of the leading causes of climate change but the good news is you can become a climate hero just by switching up your eating habits.

Eating a diet that’s mainly plant-based will have a huge impact on your carbon footprint, in fact, for every day, you forgo meat and dairy you can reduce your carbon footprint by 8 pounds - that’s 2920 pounds a year! To avoid your food having its own plane ticket try and shop for locally grown produce, here in the southwest we are extremely lucky to have so many local veg box provides. Reduce your food waste by planning your meals ahead of time and always freezing your leftovers to reheat later.

Step 4, Wardrobe Dilemmas

Fast fashion is a leading cause of climate change with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change calculating that the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global carbon dioxide emissions each year and using 1.5 trillion litres of water annually. Avoiding fast fashion brands that promote cheap, trendy clothes that go out of style quickly and instead by vintage or recycled clothes, websites such as Depop are a great way to help avoid clothes ending up in the tip. Top tip - unsubscribe from the mailing lists of fast fashion companies, these companies send weekly promotions to entice you to spend

with them, no emails mean no temptations.

Buy quality clothes from brands that have sourced their materials ethically, good brands will have a climate statement on their websites so you can read exactly where the company ethos lies.

Step 5, Getting From A to B

An average car produces five tons of CO2 each year which is not good for the planet.

Car users can reduce their commuting CO2 emissions by carpooling where ever possible, ensuring your tyres are properly inflated, and removing any excess weight from the vehicle. The ‘Ride Your Bike to Work’ scheme is an excellent way to reduce vehicle numbers from our roads.

Riding a bike is a clean way to get to your destination and the boost to your fitness levels is an added bonus. Flying is a quick

way to stack up your carbon emissions, avoid domestic flights and instead opt for using our great rail networks which are a much greener way to travel around the UK. If you need to fly keep it green by going economy, due to passenger numbers business class is responsible for almost three times as many emissions as economy. Don’t forget to offset your flights, the money is used to help fund climate protection projects.

A strong passion for photography has enabled business owner, Hannah Cochrane to enrich the lives of people from her muchloved community that she grew up in. With a watchful eye, Hannah had noticed there was a lack of accessible and affordable activities outside of sports clubs and coffee mornings for people to socialise within Plympton. Photography is a medium that can be enjoyed and practised by everyone, it opens itself up to be not only taking a photograph, but a mindfulness tool and a platform to engage with other like-minded people. With two businesses under her belt, PL7 Studios and Community Photographic Studios CIC she has managed to successfully bring her vision to life.

orn in Plymouth, Hannah began setting up her career from a very young age. She fell into the hospitality industry at the sprightly age of 17 and soon became an assistant hotel manager by 18 years old. With a strong devotion to her work, she jumped at every opportunity that would enrich her career and in-return. Having worked up to a managerial role, she then became part of the training team, teaching staff at new hotels across the country.

Since having her children in her mid-late 20’s, she realised that the hospitality hours no longer fitted with being a mother and she sought to do something new and creative.

Photography and the arts have always been something Hannah was interested in. Despite being dyslexic and having struggled at school, she wanted to prove herself worthy of a degree.

She applied for an access course in 2013 and then dived into a 3-year photography degree. As a mature student at Plymouth College of Art, Hannah was captivated by the subject of commercial photography and delved into the course seeking to learn all there was to know about the subject and its history. During this time, she also developed a keen interest in child and family photography. As well as a First class degree, she also received two awards; the Principle’s Commendation Award, which was the highest award given out in her year and a Photography Award.

Being determined to develop a career in photography, she tested herself even further by completing a Masters of the

Arts degree in entrepreneurship for creative practice. Whilst learning a lot about building up business through image sharing and doing family and wedding photography as well, she developed another interest in teaching which is now common practice in her work, covering all generations from children to veterans.

Hannah owns and is managing director of 2 photography businesses, ‘PL7 Studios’ which is the commercial photography business and ‘Community Photographic Studios CIC’ which is a social enterprise, which along with herself , she has the help of Glenn Jordan a Plympton local Councilor and Lily Luscombe from LS Online Marketing who are also both directors of the social enterprise. To support the social enterprise, she puts a lot of work into the commercial photography side, which allows her to support the community projects with free photography sessions.

Following on from these courses, you go away with a stunning portfolio and a reference from Hannah to use in applications for a degree, or to put you in a strong position to get a job.

Some attendees have already been successfully accepted into university degree courses.

Kids holiday clubs and the Art and Photography Saturday club are very popular for 8–14-year-olds. During the day, the children carry out an art tasks as well a photography challenges; these can range from graffiti painting, watercolour painting, collages – mostly those things that are too messy for home, as well as plenty of photography in the studios and out on location in the local area. Hannah wanted to create this side of her business for young people who may not be interested in sports clubs.

PL7 Studios was, up until June 2020, known as Hannah Marie Photography, specialising in family, child, new-born and food photography; having began working as a freelance photographer alongside her studies. She has since branched out and created the brand new venture known as ‘PL7 Studios’. Within PL7 Studios, they not only offer affordable photoshoots if you just want a super studio with all the lighting, but they also teach photography in group sessions or on a 1-1 basis.

We take a wide range of professional photos for social media content and these images form a great structure to a business when put on websites or in graphic design for posters and flyers as well as social media. Many of Hannah’s images can now be seen on local business websites. Hannah is particularly passionate about food photography and works with several restaurants and food suppliers across the Southwast.

Community Photographic Studios was founded by Hannah 3 years ago as part of her Masters Degree and was CIC registered a year later. Her ethos for this business was to give back to the community she grew up in. She began creating free photography sessions for veteran’s and the over 50’s and worked closely with Help For Heroes.

The social enterprise is funded by various government schemes as well as the Arts Council, Devon Community Fund and The National Lottery which enables them to put on free community sessions. They are also supported by local councilors and the new Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Terri Beer who asked Hannah and the team to be her official photographers this year.

Hannah wanted to offer sessions to people who have struggles with mental health, anxiety or isolation and bring a community together through photography. As well as the free sessions for Forces Veteran’s and over 50’s, they also offer vibrant and exciting youth projects, to encourage children and teenagers off screen-time, off the streets, and into a new hobby.

The veteran’s and over 50’s sessions are fairly similar in the way they are run. They will generally start with a social time over cake and coffee, then they are shown a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation with the theme of their next challenge to focus on - each session is different. They can bring their own cameras along or use one of the 10 cameras we can lend at the studio. The sessions are very photography based, perfect for learning a new skill or perfecting a growing passion; but here,

Nature photography walk Veteran’s photography session they also have a place to meet other like-minded people. The veteran’s benefit hugely from these sessions, as they may be suffering from PTSD, or just the loss of the camaraderie which are so much part of active Service life.

The youth projects collaborate with the local police and community groups - seeking to engage teens in the local area who would benefit from educational talks and an evening of creative challenges. This project is run over 4 weeks and starts in May 2021.

In May 2021, they are also starting some personal development sessions for women. Collaborating with local business Wild Daisy Personal Development, There will be full day funded workshops, which will include sessions about women’s personal development, with mindfulness photographic activities. These will be be studio based with nature walks activities.

Community Photographic Studios CIC is much more than a photography studio, it is a hub for the community of Plympton, providing a safe, stimulating and creative educational environment for all.

In an image drenched society, with ever increasing career and personal interest opportunities through photography. The CIC is working with young adults to help enhancing their creative outlook, gain core skills and enable future employment. The CIC is launching a Plympton Community Work Experience scheme for 18-20 year olds to gain core work experience in the Plympton area across a range of local business, giving them the experience needed for future employment. In addition there is a new and exciting entrepreneur workshops for 18-25 year olds launch in May of this year.

They also organise photography trips not only around Plymouth but the world!

They have taken a groups to Italy for 5 days and practised street and landscape photography and a group to Sweden to photograph the Northern lights and learn astrophotography. These trips are open to anyone with a keen interest in extending their photography experience.

These sessions and trips are advertised and available to book via the Facebook page @ CommunityPhotographicStudiosCIC. All of the links you can find there and everything is booked through Eventbrite.

With the lockdown end in sight, by 19th April, Hannah hopes to bring back family photoshoots and 1-1 sessions in the studio along with outdoor workshops with reduced group sizes. Come 17th May, group sessions of up to 5 can start back up again in the studio. If the Covid-19 Roadmap rules keep to the stated dates, then by 21st June, there will be no limit to group sizes and things will function as normal.

The two businesses are currently hiring two new members through the governments new kickstart programme.

They hope that in 2 years, we can permanently expand the team which means we’ll be able to do a lot more courses and sessions and create larger projects for the local community.

It is clear to us that Hannah is very passionate about not only photography but teaching and watching people grow through teaching a creative subject. The work that she has done to enable the community to thrive of these courses and free sessions is truly admirable. Equine rehabilitation sanctuary

Save our sanctuary “As a team, we find ourselves in a heart-breaking situation, this is very raw for us and we are desperately trying to find a way forward” are the words of Sharon Vieira, the founder of the charity Hoofbeats Sanctuary that was formed 21 years ago.

H

aving been at Lower Collard Farm for nearly 10 of their 21 years, the charity has rescued and rehomed over 200 horses and ponies since they were first launched in 2000. The sanctuary offers a safe haven for horses of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds and has seen troubled residents go on to find forever loving homes thanks to the hard work and dedication of “Team Hoofbeats”- the charity’s completely volunteer based team.

Having turned so many horses and ponies’ fortunes around from their quiet and unassuming fields on the edge of Plymouth, Hoofbeats are now hoping their fortune can be turned around by the generosity of members of the public, without which, the future for Hoofbeats and the horses that call it home is uncertain.

The charity’s “Save our Sanctuary” appeal has been launched as an emergency response to the “devastating” news that their landlord wishes to take back the land they rent for his own business venture.

NATIONAL PET MONTH It’s National Pet Month! Now that the lockdown is over, our schedules are gradually starting to fill back up again. We have had a two-month lockdown and for a lot of pets, it has been the best two months of their lives, being able to spend endless hours with their owner. As we are headed back into work again, we need to make sure our furry friends don’t feel left out. We have come up with a few ideas of ways to keep your pets entertained and happy whilst you are at work.

Work from Home

If you managed to work from home successfully during the previous lockdowns, approach your boss and ask if you could carry this on, even if it is just part-time at home. Focus on the benefits you felt whilst working from home and not to mention the fuel saved. There are so many positive impacts that working from home has on the environment as more workplaces are scrapping their offices and working remotely.

Take your pet to work

If you are able, take your pet to work with you. As long as they are toilet trained and don’t interfere with your job too much this shouldn’t be too much of an issue if your workplace allows it. They will appreciate all the new smells of a new place and you will have peace of mind knowing they are safe with you.

Have lunch at Home

If you are unable to do the above, try to head home during your lunch break if you have time. You may not be able to keep this up however, doing this at the beginning will help ease your pet into being at home for long periods without going cold turkey straight away.

Finding a way to entertain your pet whilst you are out can be challenging however, there are lots of different puzzles and treat toys on the market for all types of pets to enjoy. These work by putting some treats that you know your pet loves into a puzzle or treat toy and leaving them out as soon as you leave for work.

As they try to figure out how to get the treats out, this acts as a distraction so that they are not sad when you leave and can keep them entertained for hours.

Dog walkers and cat sitters

If you are out for long periods, your cat will require a cat sitter to make sure they are coming inside at their usual times and to make sure they are healthy and have been fed. If you are out for the day, cats are usually very low maintenance so won’t need to be checked on regularly.

Dogs, on the other hand, may feel neglected and lonely when you are out.

If you are unable to walk your dog twice a day, you will need a dog walker or a helping hand. ‘Borrow My Doggy’ is a trusted dog walker site for people who simply love dogs but can’t get one and so they are happy to walk your dog for free. ‘Dog Walking Now’ is another similar website that you can use.

Seasonal RECIPE IDEAS

Bring the season of spring into the kitchen! We have gathered together our favourite in-season, healthy recipes for you to enjoy this April.

Beetroot & Halloumi Salad • • • • • • • • • •

80g pomegrante seeds few springs of dill, chopped 1 medium red onion, halved and thinly sliced 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar 2 oranges 2tbsp pumpkin seeds handful of mint 2 cooked beetroots, chopped 4 handfuls rocket leaves 80g halloumi thinly sliced

ONE Put the sliced onion in a bowl, add the vinegar and toss well. Peel and segment the orange, catching any juice into the bowl of onions.

TWO Pile the rocket onto plates and top with the beetroot and orange pieces. Rub a drop of rapeseed oil around a frying pan then fry the halloumi for about 30 seconds each side until golden.

THREE Stir the pomegranate seeds into the onion and dressing mix and then spoon over the rocket. Top with the halloumi and scatter with the pumpkin seeds, mint and dill.

Vegetarian quesadilla (Serves 2) • • • • • • • • •

1½ tbsp olive oil 4 spring onions, thinly sliced 400g tin mixed beans in water, drained 1 tbsp chipotle paste 4 flour tortillas 100g/3½oz cheddar, grated 4 tbsp soured cream (optional) 1 lime, juice only (optional) handful fresh coriander, to garnish (optional)

ONE Heat the oven to 120C/100C Fan/Gas ½.

TWO Heat ½ tablespoon of oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the spring onions and cook for 2 minutes, until beginning to soften. Add the beans and the chipotle paste stir well. Using a potato masher or fork, crush the beans to a rough purée. Transfer the beans to a plate and wipe out the pan.

THREE Add half a tablespoon of the oil to the pan over a low heat and gently wipe with a piece of kitchen paper. Put one tortilla in the pan and top with an even layer of grated cheese. Spoon over half the bean mixture and top with another even layer of cheese (the cheese acts as glue).

Place a tortilla on top of the cheese, then press down with a spatula and cook for 3–4 minutes, or until the underside is golden. Flip over the quesadilla and cook for a further 3–4 minutes.

FOUR Place on a baking tray and transfer to the oven to keep warm. Repeat step three with the remaining ingredients.

FIVE If making the sour cream dip, mix the soured cream and lime juice together in a bowl. Cut the quesadillas into quarters and drizzle over the lime soured cream. Sprinkle with the coriander, if using, and serve.

Easy rhubarb cake (Serves 10-12) • 200g/7oz softened butter, plus extra for greasing • 200g/7oz caster sugar, plus 3 tbsp for the topping • 3 large free-range eggs • 1 tsp vanilla extract or almond extract • 200g/7oz ground almonds • 200g/7oz self-raising flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 300g/10½oz slender young rhubarb, trimmed and cut into roughly 2cm/¾in lengths ONE Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4. Grease a 23cm/9in springform cake tin with butter and line the base with baking paper.

TWO Put the butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla or almond extract, almonds, flour and baking powder in a food mixer or food processor. Beat until smooth and thick.

THREE Spoon the cake batter into the prepared tin. Top with the rhubarb, pressing it down gently. Sprinkle with the reserved 3 tablespoons of sugar.

FOUR Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Cover with foil if the cake starts to overbrown before it is cooked in the centre.

FIVE Cool in the tin for 20 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack. Serve warm or cold.

Ratatouille (Serves 4) • • • • • • • • •

2 aubergines 4 small courgettes 2 red peppers 4 large tomatoes 4 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed ½ tsp sugar, salt and freshly ground black pepper small bunch basil, roughly torn

Salmon, Broccoli and potato bake (Serves 4) • • • • • •

750g medium potato, cut into wedges 1 head of brocolli, trimmed and broken into florets 200ml tub creme fraiche 2 tbsp wholegrain mustard 2 large or 4 small salmon fillets, cut into large pieces handful grated parmesan

ONE Put the potato wedges into a shallow microwaveproof baking dish, then cook on high for 10 mins until almost tender all the way through. Add the broccoli, recover and cook for another 3 mins or until the florets just give with a knife.

TWO Heat grill to medium. Mix the creme fraiche and mustard together with a little seasoning. Nestle the salmon in among the potatoes and broccoli, then spoon over the creme fraiche mix. Sprinkle with the cheese and grill for 5 mins, until the tips of the potatoes are golden, and the salmon is just cooked.

ONE Cut the aubergines into quarters lengthways, then cut the quarters into 2.5cm/1in slices. Cut the courgettes into 2.5cm/1in slices. De-seed the peppers and cut them into bite-sized pieces.

TWO To peel the tomatoes, score a cross in the base of each tomato and place them in a heatproof bowl. Pour over enough boiling water to cover and set aside for one minute.

Drain and, when cool enough to handle, peel away the skins. Roughly chop the flesh.

THREE Heat the oil in a flameproof casserole dish and add the onions. Cook over a gentle heat for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden-brown and very tender.

Add the aubergines and courgettes, increase the heat slightly and cook for 2-3 minutes. Stir in the peppers, garlic, sugar, some salt and pepper and half the basil and mix well. Cover and cook over a very gentle heat for 20 minutes. Add the tomatoes to the pan and cook for a further 10 minutes. Scatter the ratatouille with the remaining basil and serve.

BRIAN BLAKE Why I’m standing for Police and Crime Commissioner Brian Blake explains why he will be standing for Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon and Cornwall on behalf of the Liberal Democrats.

A

n ex-copper as Police and Crime Commissioner? That makes sense!

BRIAN BLAKE joined Devon and Cornwall Police straight from school, and worked in nine stations across the region.

He spent seven years in uniform, before working with Special Branch, CID and finally the Regional and National Crime Squads. Brian retired from the police as a Detective Chief Inspector, then worked with the MoD and NATO, serving mainly in Europe in security-related roles. During his service he together with colleagues investigated all forms of crime ranging from murder, sexual offences drug trafficking and burglaries. He also addressed two Interpol conferences in Lyon and Madrid on organised International Crime as well as the now National Police Chiefs Council. He was also on a Home Office working group on Policing in Europe. He’s now standing as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon and Cornwall.

All victims need support With extensive experience of local, national and international crime, he has seen at first-hand the impact that crime has on individuals, families and communities. “I have dealt with offenders and victims alike” he says. ”I recognise that all victims need support, and to know that their complaint is properly investigated.”

He also recognises that crime is continually evolving, especially online

crime which targets the young, the elderly and the vulnerable. “The police need our support and co-operation in dealing with this growing menace, and if elected I will dedicate myself to promoting this partnership between the police and the public they serve.”

There have been drastic cuts to funding of all police forces in recent years, and Devon and Cornwall police have lost over 500 officers as a result. “Raising the policing precept on council tax is just tinkering around the edges,” he says. “I will press for Government funding to be increased to a level that’s appropriate to the task that the police now face.”

An impartial Commissioner serving the public and the police Brian Blake is a long-standing member of the Liberal Democrat party, and he is standing under the banner of that party. However, he would, if elected, be required to swear an oath of impartiality, something which he will take very seriously. “In my opinion, policing and politics should be entirely separate: there is nothing political about having your house burgled or having our young people surrounded by drug dealers. The LibDem ethos of fairness and equality is what is needed in the Criminal Justice system – and I will work for everyone across the region, regardless of their politics.”

As we all know, the Police Service faces considerable challenges, not least having to work with laws created by an increasingly authoritarian Government.

Commissioner to mitigate those challenges, and having been a serving police officer for 31 years, Brian Blake has the experience needed to do the job for the benefit of all. In particular, it is his stated intention, if successful, to “RESTORE POLICING TO THE LEVEL NEEDED FOR OUR TWO COUNTIES” – as paid for by its residents.

Brian has lived in south Devon for over 30 years, and is married to Elinor, a former nurse. He has three sons and a grandson, and his interests include military history and dragging himself to the gym. He also maintains an allotment which he says has developed into a self-service canteen for crows and rabbits.
