The creative arts scene is one of the most competitive industries in the country, let alone the South West. It can be hard to find your feet and excel in an industry where standing out above the rest requires hard work, motivation and dedication. Jacqui Cant, owner of Skymind Studios has all of those qualities and so many more; always pouring her heart and soul into every aspect of her business, building it up to be the best, and supporting the local community around her, giving back whenever and wherever possible.

S

kymind Studios are a local complete solution multimedia company with a difference. Driven by Jacqui’s passion and love to help her local community, Jacqui tells OM how her childhood passion eventually established a business that now knows no bounds. It’s not often you come across individuals that inspire you to want to get up and do good in the world. Jacqui Cant, director of Skymind Studios is certainly one of those inspiring people who puts everyone else’s needs before herself to add value to lives with absolutely everything she does. Jacqui was born in Canada, and raised in South Africa until 1996 when she moved to the UK with her family due to her father’s job as a surgeon. After travelling the UK for a few years her family-based themselves in Plymouth where she has stayed ever since. After graduating from Plymouth College of Arts in 2008 with a degree in film arts Jacqui knew she had to do whatever it takes to pursue a career in her chosen industry - creative arts. But nothing is ever smooth sailing as she explains:

“I am a very outgoing person and it was hard for me to get a job after I finished university because often people judge a book by its cover” After struggling to find work, Jacqui eventually found a job working for a charity with disabled individuals, focusing on implementing and helping get people out into the community. “I thought it was great and especially being disabled myself it automatically added value to my life.” Alongside working for this charity, Jacqui was working hard to build Skymind Studios not knowing if it was ever going to go anywhere. She decided to take the concept of adding value to other’s lives and implementing that to her business as it is today, being a very communityfocused organisation. Skymind Studios was initially established as a partnership, 10 years ago in 2009, and then in 2014 it became a CIC. The company is now run solely by Jacqui as of July 2018 without the status of a CIC. “When my partner decided to leave, I wanted to keep it going so decided to focus on the community and push forward. However, if I was realistic, the business is now more community focused than it ever was before, even when it was a CIC”

Skymind Studios are a fully multimedia company providing a variety of services, including live sound, photography, digital graphic design, social media marketing, film, motion graphics and events organisers and coordinators. The company thrives off of Jacqui’s pure passion for the arts and love for helping

Meet Jacqui Cant! others around her. She fell in love with film at 16 years old when she first picked up a film camera and ever since she has been obsessed with the making of arts whether that be visual or audio. Whilst at university, her passion for the music industry was brought to life as she became involved with the recording process and live sound. Being a firm believer that hard work will get you where you want to be, Jacqui threw herself into work experience as much as she could, even getting the opportunity to help produce a huge project for Plymouth Pavilions. “Anything I could possibly get my hands on to be creative was how I focused”

No task is too large for Jacqui and her team of regular sub-contractors who are always on hand to put their skills to the test with anything thrown their way. “We’re a team and we do everything together.” Jacqui has a great mentor Neil Bailey and Unity Production’s Ryan Bailey that Jacqui works in partnership with. Jacqui has one very important moto that she lives by as a business owner. “You don’t work for Skymind Studios, you are bringing something to the table that gives this event or project your own little stamp whatever that might be” As a business owner, there will always be setbacks and for Skymind Studios proving to others they were the best was one of their biggest challenges. When the business was established the question of age set back Jacqui as she was young at the time but being the strong, independent woman, she is, she would always prove everyone wrong.

www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

“Not only do you have to constantly prove things to yourself, but you have to prove to the people that you’re doing work for that you are the right person for the job and why. At the end of the day, age is just a number” Since re-establishing Skymind Studios in July 2018, Jacqui has found she has learnt so much and is still learning every day by putting what she learnt at university into practice in the real world and learning from previous mistakes to make the business better.

“I call it a beautiful challenge because I thrive on the pressure of it” The business has changed direction over the years and Jacqui is now focusing on the visual elements of the business on social media marketing for businesses. She explains: “We are gravitating towards social media as it’s such a rich platform. There are lots of things people don’t know or understand about social media that can be very beneficial to their market and business, especially with Instagram and Facebook” Jacqui is always looking out for current trends and keeping on top of the market around her. In a day and age where the internet and technology are taking over our lives, she ensures that all content produced is very visual whether it is film, photography or graphic design.

“I read a lot as a child, but now people don’t want to read or look at things for too long” As a society, we read less now than previously, meaning that content published online, in print and on-screen must be informative but visually pleasing, this is something Jacqui is working hard to implement across her business and with every client.

In 2018, Jacqui sadly lost her father to a brain tumour caused by skin cancer. (Melanoma Metastasis) Most people dwell during the process of grief, but not Jacqui. She picked herself up and used her father’s values and core beliefs to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity at Parkfest. This year, Park Fest was held at Devonport Park on the 8th September and was hugely attended by the local community and the people of Plymouth. Park Fest is an event created by Skymind Studios to help raise awareness as well as to give back to the local community. The whole event “celebrates park life” with the chance to have a picnic, enjoy live music and get involved in activities throughout the day.

Raising awareness is something Jacqui was taught by her father from a young age and she has used the core values he taught her in everything she does. “I feel if you are doing something and you can bring value to it and the people around you then you are doing something great.”

Film production and social media marketing go hand in hand with Skymind Studios, with most of their clients approaching initially about social media marketing and then moving onto the film services the team provide.

Another event in the diary is Flickfest, an independent film festival organised by Skymind Studios taking place in April 2020. In honour of giving back to the community, Skymind Studios will be raising money for Improving Lives Plymouth who hold a special place in Jacqui’s heart for the help they have provided her in the past.

Organising events is something Jacqui personally enjoys and has a passion for. She tells us: “I am an event organiser and coordinator, because I can’t seem to stop myself from working and doing stuff.”

Skymind Studios value themselves on the community and providing the highest quality service possible with a personal touch, something that is rare to find. Each project is based on what suits the client,

always ensuring they remain approachable and focused even when setbacks occur, and negative feedback comes their way.

Having focused on promoting themselves online via social media and word of mouth, Skymind Studios has taken off through their expertise and excellent level of customer service. “I just want to be a nice little organisation that really brings value to their customers. I want to create awareness and for people to walk away saying that we are real and not all about the money, that is very important to Skymind Studios. It is rare to find anyone that gives back to the community as much as Jacqui does with her business whilst providing the exceptional and personal service that she does. WALK YOUR DOG MONTH Written by Charlotte Cooper, Edited by Abby Cooper It’s a new year, so why not start 2020 with healthy habits not only for yourself but for your furry friend?

I

t can be tempting to stay inside and avoid the frosty weather during the winter months, but January is Walk Your Dog Month and what better way to kick start your New Year’s Resolutions by getting out and about in the great outdoors, walking off some of that festive food and drink. With obvious health benefits for both you and your dog(s), this awareness month is a great way to help dust off the January blues, get out and about, meet other dog walkers and improve your own and your dogs well being. It’s easy to put yourself first during the winter months when your mood is low due to the post-Christmas blues, you’re back to work and the last thing you want to be doing is spending time outside in the cold weather when at home it’s all cosy with the heating cranked up. But if you find yourself losing a little motivation to stay active, think about how your fur baby feels. Although the weather this time of the year is typically chilly and dull, your dog still needs exercise and stimulation. And of course, they want to do it with their favourite person- you!

There are many health benefits of dog walking to you and your dog. Typically a dog should have at least 20 to 30 minutes of walking per day, depending on the breed, age and health of the dog. Working breeds such as collies, shepherds and working spaniels may have higher exercise requirements than ‘lapdogs’ such as terriers and toy breeds, meaning working breeds may be able to tolerate more walking.

It gets you both moving A body in motion stays in motion. We have heard this many times. There is no better motivation to exercise than those sweet doe eyes staring at you and the tail wagging to go with it. Dogs build up a lot of energy during the day, especially when they are home alone and taking frequent naps. Although you may be tired and sluggish from the grey weather, your pup wants to go expend some of that energy. It is proven that exercise and movement is healthy for both the body and mind, so even if you take them on a quick walk outside with lots of scent work, it will help them settle indoors. Plus, walking will help keep those extra pounds off of them (and you…).

A less-stressed dog Think about it, exercise helps you sleep better and reduces stress. Well, the same goes for your pup. Walking daily with them will lower both of your stress levels and can even help manage some of their bad behaviours. Many times, when dogs misbehave or act out, it can mean they are not getting enough attention or exercise. A daily walk can help with many behaviour problems that are fed by incorrect or lack of stimulation.

A healthier dog Walking is great for your dog’s body in countless ways. Getting their heart pumping gives them fresh oxygenated blood and a rush of energy and will help keep them healthy for many years to come. Walking also lubricates their joints, speeds up their metabolism and burns calories. If they need to lose a couple of pounds, or you just want to keep them in shape and healthy, daily walks for even 30 minutes will achieve this goal. What better gift can you give your dog other than a longer and higher quality of life? Even though it’s a bit chilly this time of year, it is still good to get outside and get fresh air. The dry, stuffy air inside can often make you and your dog feel confined and claustrophobic. If it’s not too cold outside, getting some natural air and scents will arouse your dog’s natural behaviours and stimulate their instinctive natures to investigate new things they come across on a walk. If you need some help with dog training and walking then get in touch with The Dogfather Devon, local dog walkers and trainers based in Plymouth.

Plymouth has a whole host of cafe’s, pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants to choose from. From the Barbican, the city centre, right through to Royal William Yard. However, one such venue has managed to establish itself as all the above whilst becoming one of the most desired venues in Plymouth. Coffee and breakfast before work, brunch on a Saturday with the girls, a lavish dinner with the family or a night out with fine wine and cocktails with some old friends... The Treasury Bar has been providing all the above and beyond right in the centre of Plymouth for many years.

S

ituated in a stunning 19th-century building, The Treasury Bar has been at the heart of fine-dining and fine drinking for over 16 years. OM Magazine caught up with owner, Ben Shearn who gave us an insight into the history of The Treasury Bar and how he made the successful bar and eatery what it is today. The Treasury first originated in 2003 when a young entrepreneur who, unequivocally had a passion for business from a very young age. Finishing his A levels just outside of Plymouth, Ben was keen to leave education and get into business.

“Like many young people growing up in the West Country, I was thinking I needed to go to the big city, that I needed to fly the nest, so I applied for a job in London” Ben was successfully accepted into the Sainsbury’s graduate management programme where he worked between London head office and his Newcastle store being the youngest employee in his store. After a year of working in the corporate world and the buzz of London and Newcastle and having been offered a managerial position with Sainsbury’s, Ben found his creativity

was limited due to strict rules set by head office and, thus, kindly declined the offer. At 20 years old, Ben took a plunge into the business world back in Plymouth and opened a cafe and sandwich bar on the Barbican.

“I saw an opportunity to open a cafe and sandwich bar as that’s the culture I had experienced in London.” The initial plan for Ben was to start up a business, build it up within a year and then sell it on so he could travel for a year. However, this wasn’t the outcome as he became too involved with the cafe, moving on to open up various other businesses within 7 years, one of those being the successful B-Bar situated in The Barbican Theatre. With a clever business mind, positive attitude and creative flare, Ben pushed himself into various business ventures across the South West, always coming up with new ideas using a multi-faced approach to connect people and businesses.

Ben’s most successful business to date is The Treasury, which has been providing exceptional food

Meet Ben, owner of The Treasury! and drink to the people of Plymouth and beyond for over 16 years. Upon securing a lease on the premises of the Old Treasury building it took Ben six months to get the now popular bar and eatery up and running on its path to success. The market for a new cafe, restaurant and bar in Plymouth was in demand at the time of opening and this played out to his advantage. A keen businessman never misses an opportunity and Ben observed the trends of other local bars and eateries around the area. “People didn’t want to go to a nightclub but wanted to stay out later than 11 pm” With most pubs only open until 11pm at the time and nightclubs opening from 11pm, Ben decided to apply for a nightclub license to allow the locals to have a fine dining restaurant and luxurious bar all in one place that was open all day.

The Treasury was offering something nobody else was and this put them ahead of the curve. Ben’s pride and joy, The Treasury, has become a huge asset to the city of Plymouth being used for a variety of different purposes from a catch-up coffee with an old friend, bottomless brunch with the girls, dinner with the family or a night out with your friends in their state-of-the-art bar.

“The Treasury is a lot of things to a lot of people”

Catering for all diet types, there is something for everyone to choose from at The Treasury Bar, whether you’re a vegetarian, vegan or require gluten-free dishes; their modern English menu has everybody covered and dining in style. You can indulge in a variety of offers such as the ever-popular afternoon tea, breakfast, lunch and even bottomless brunch which is becoming increasingly popular. Not only can you head out for a delightful family meal or have a few drinks with the girls, but the venue has the option to host private functions in The Lounge Function room, a classically themed and intimate selfcontained bar upstairs from the main room. Catering for up to 150 people The Lounge Function room is available for a whole host of events including engagement parties, baby showers, birthdays and wedding receptions. Downstairs you can indulge in a variety of offers such as the ever popular afternoon tea, breakfast, lunch and even bottomless brunch which is becoming increasingly popular. Ben is always thinking ahead, using his knowledge of world trends and bringing them to Plymouth. Bottomless brunch is a perfect example of this, costing just £25 for 2 hours of unlimited prosecco and brunch.

“We’re not just a restaurant and we’re not a typical bar. We’re like a chameleon with the ability to change as the day progresses” The gin trend has become more and more popular and after founding their Gin Club 12 years ago with only 5 gins on offer, The Treasury now stocks more than 150 artisan gins for those who love a tipple of gin and tonic and their monthly Gin club runs every month on the last Thursday at 7pm and includes 3 gins, tasting notes and buffet for only £15. January is bringing new and exciting things for Ben and his team at The Treasury when they launch their brand-new healthy menu which offers a range of healthy alternatives to help kick the new year off to a refreshing start. Keep your eyes peeled on their website and social media for more details. Supporting local charities is heavily on the radar for Ben who has a passion for helping

others, supporting Jerimiah’s Journey as a Trustee for the last 12 years and working closely with St Luke’s Hospice having completed various hikes including climbing Kilimanjaro to raise money for the charity. Another thing that Ben is passionate about across all of his business ventures is being environmentally conscious. With plastic wastage at an all-time high globally, Ben is focusing his business on recycling, reducing and reusing where possible. He was the first bar to introduce a ban on plastic straws and rid the use of plastic cups at all his outdoor events now using plant starch-based alternatives.

“Living in Plymouth, you have to aware of the environment around you with a beautiful coastline on your doorstep” His work has been recognised by Surfers Against Sewage Plastic free oceans campaign and as a director of the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, Ben is passionate to promote a plastic-free Plymouth to boost Plymouth’s status of the first National Marine Park. At Christmas, The Treasury decided not to use traditional Christmas crackers due to the high volume of plastic included in each one. Instead focusing on wood and cardboard props for customers to pose and entertain.

Event planning is something that Ben is passionate about and he has always excelled when a challenge is thrown his way. The focus now is to push the events side of his business, Treasury Events. Across the South West, there are many events companies to choose from that offer different services, but Treasury Events is

all encompassing providing everything from hosting events, providing temporary event structures such as marquees, mobile bars, catering, lighting, DJ’s and cocktail staff with a team of over 40 they are able to support large client contracts such as MTV, Rolex and universities. There is no denying that Ben is extremely driven and has a powerful passion for business and the hospitality industry having built many successful businesses over his 25 years in the industry, putting himself to the test and overcoming any hurdle in his way. If you’re after a luscious meal, cocktails with friends, have an event coming up or for more information then get in touch with The Treasury using the details below.

Mushroom Paella with Smoky Chickpeas A vegan paella, still made with saffron but given a twist by adding roasted chickpeas tossed in paprika for a smoky flavour.

Ingredients:

1 onion, peel & diced 2 garlic cloves, peeled & chopped 1 red pepper, deseeded & sliced 1 yellow pepper, deseeded & sliced 200g mushrooms, finely sliced 4 tomatoes, diced 1 lemon, halved 1 tsp light brown sugar 150g arborio rice 1 tin chickpeas 1 paella spice mix (1 tsp paprika, 1/2 tbsp bouillon powder, 1tsp dried thyme) pinch of saffron 1 tsp smoked paprika 15g parsley, finely chopped 15g sorrel, roughly shredded 20g flaked almonds

Method: Pre-heat your oven to 200C/Gas 6. Sprinkle the cut sides of lemon with sugar. Place cut-side down in a large, deep frying pan & heat until caramelised, then transfer to a plate. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in the same pan. Gently fry the onion on a low heat for 10 mins; stir now & then. Rinse the rice in a sieve. Drain the chickpeas into a colander, rinse under cold water, pat dry with kitchen paper or a clean tea towel, & leave to air dry for 5 mins. Toss the dried chickpeas on a baking tray in oil to coat. Season with salt. Roast for 30 mins, until crispy on the outside. Toss every 10 mins so they roast evenly. Some may pop a bit! Meanwhile, add the garlic, mushrooms & pepper to the onion. Stir. Add the rice, tomatoes, paella spice mix, saffron & ½ the smoked paprika. Pour in 600ml of water. Season. Boil for 25-30 mins, adding more water as needed. Stir occasionally, until the rice is tender with a little bite. Put the almonds on a baking tray. Bake them for 2-4 mins (keep a good eye on them), until golden. Toss the cooked chickpeas in the remaining smoked paprika. Toss the sorrel with the rice. Season. Serve the paella, sprinkled with the chickpeas, almonds & parsley, & with the caramelised lemon for squeezing.

Roasted purple sprouting broccoli with lemon, chilli and garlic - serves 4 as a side Simple, zesty and bright, this speedy side pairs well with fried tofu but would go equally with chicken or white fish. 200g purple sprouting broccoli, trimmed if necessary and cut into equal-sized stems 3–4 tbsp olive oil 1 thumb-sized red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped, or a couple of pinches of dried chilli flakes 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped finely grated zest and juice of 1 lemon salt

Heat the oven to 200°C/Gas 6. Put the broccoli into a roasting tin, season lightly with salt and mix with a good slosh of olive oil until well coated. Roast for 4 minutes then add the chilli, garlic and lemon zest and mix well. Return to the oven for a further 3–4 minutes, or until the broccoli is tender to the point of a knife. Mix again and check the seasoning. Finish with a pinch more salt if needed and a splash of lemon juice to taste. Variation - For an Asian-style twist, replace the lemon with a lime, add a small amount of finely grated ginger and top with toasted sesame seeds.)

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS Written by Charlotte Cooper Many of us will make a New Year’s resolution in the hope of sparking change, but according to research, only very few people will accomplish their objectives. If you are planning on making a New Year’s resolution this year, read our top tips for successfully starting and sticking to your goal.

I

t’s that time of the year again where for some strange reason we all think that magically, because a new year has arrived, we will suddenly change into a whole new person, just like that. Unfortunately, as we envisage that the arrival of a new year will magically provide us with all the motivation and persistence we need to be the healthier, happier us, most of the time this doesn’t happen. New Year’s resolutions often require a positive attitude and more hard work than people seem to realise. Year after year we make these New Year’s plans, and year after year we stumble and stop them after only a few months, sometimes after only a few weeks! So how can we break this endless cycle and make sure this year’s resolutions are permanent changes that, in the long, will make us feel great? Read our top tips for successfully starting, and sticking to, your 2020 New Year’s resolution.

Pick only one thing you want to change, and focus on just that one. While you might have a long list of potential New Year’s resolutions, it is better to pick just one and focus all of your time and energy into it, rather than trying to take on too many different objectives, feeling overwhelmed, and spreading yourself too thin trying to cover too much. Focusing your efforts on one specific goal makes keeping a resolution much more achievable.

Make sure your New Year’s resolution is realistic so you are not setting yourself up for failure. The final goal of a resolution can be so daunting that you don’t even start it, so why not break that goal into more manageable

pieces that feel more realistic to reach. If you want to set yourself a New Year’s resolution you have to be honest with yourself, and realistic about your capabilities. If your goal is to lose weight, it might be better to set yourself small weekly goals, for example, losing 1lb a week, rather than “I want to lose 2 stone in a month”, that way you can track your progress and address your fitness routine and meals accordingly. If you are planning to lose weight as part of your healthy New Year’s resolution, make sure you are being realistic in the amount you aim to lose and the time frame you plan to lose it in. Consult your weight loss and fitness plans with a professional to ensure you are being safe and not putting your body under stress. If you want to start going to the gym — fantastic! But don’t try to go from nothing to everything too quickly. If you have never been to the gym before, don’t expect to go every night of the week, be realistic and set yourself the task of going two nights a week for an hour each time. If you like what you’re doing, and you achieve your weekly goals, you can add more days into the mix by increasing it to three times a week for two hours each time, and so on. Sometimes it is better to start small and build yourself up. Breaking your goals down into smaller actions can work wonders, especially on days when you’re feeling unmotivated.

Remember that change takes time. The unhealthy habits that you are trying to change probably took years to develop, and so you can’t expect to change them within such a short period. When you decide you want to make a change, it’s difficult to be patient with yourself. It might take longer than you would like to achieve your goals, but remember it is not about how fast you can get there. Making a change is about making permanent healthier choices and committing to change is something that you will continue to work on for a long time, sometimes for life.

Expect setbacks and work through them.

Experiencing a setback is one of the most common reasons why people give up on their New Year’s resolution. Instead of giving up, try to view relapses as learning opportunities and push forward being more knowledgeable and prepared for the future. To be more prepared for any setbacks, keep a diary specifically for your New Year’s resolution, that way you will document what happened before your relapse occurred and therefore what might have triggered it. By understanding the challenges you face and what makes sticking to your resolution all the more difficult, you will be better prepared to either face them or perhaps avoid them, in the future.

Reward yourself for your achievements, big and small. Rewarding yourself doesn’t mean that you can eat an entire box of chocolates or a big bag of sugary sweets if your resolution is to eat healthier or to lose weight. It is possible to reward yourself without the need for unhealthy choices. Treat yourself to something you enjoy that doesn’t contradict your resolution, for example, perhaps some new gym clothes, or having a friend over for a (healthy) dinner.

If you are struggling, don’t be afraid to ask for help from your friends and family. Having a solid support system can help you stay motivated. Share your New Year’s resolution with your friends and family and ask them to help you stay on track. Share your progress and setbacks and most importantly be honest with them, and yourself. Better yet, enlist the help of others by joining a group that shares your goal. Find someone who matches your level of commitment, and create a plan to motivate each other to thrive. Exercising with a friend or family member can make it a more fun experience, and will increase your chances of sticking to your exercise plan by giving you more motivation and encouragement to go to the gym if you have already made a plan with someone. Skipping out, then, doesn’t mean being lazy and avoiding the wet weather — it means disrupting someone else’s routine.

Keep reminding yourself of why you set out to achieve your New Year’s resolution in the first place and try to keep a positive mindset. Making permanent changes in your life takes a lot of hard work, and some days can be harder than others. By focusing on the negatives you will only discourage yourself, which will most likely result in you giving up completely. Instead of sitting at work thinking about how tired you feel and how the gym is going to make you even more exhausted, or perhaps it’s raining outside and you don’t want to go for the scheduled run, try to remember all the positive outcomes. Believe in yourself and your goal and remind yourself of the benefits and positive impact it will have on your life. Focusing on the positives will help you stick to your new year’s resolution and make it happen.

SAMARITANS BREW MONDAY Written by Charlotte Cooper The third Monday of January is supposedly the most depressing day of the year and has become known as ‘Blue Monday’. Samaritans have transformed Blue Monday to ‘Brew Monday’ and we’re here to tell you how you can get involved.

D

on’t let things stew, get together for a brew — the campaign tells the nation. The idea behind the campaign encourages us all to invite a friend, family member, or colleague for a cuppa and have a good long chat — not just about tea, but about anything that might be upsetting them.

‘We’re here to listen, no judgement, no pressure, and help you work through what’s on your mind. We’ll never tell you what to do.’ - Samaritans. A quick coffee really could make a big difference to someone’s mental health. Often, people who are feeling low in life or even suicidal don’t want to worry or burden anyone with how they feel and so they don’t discuss it. But by reaching out and inviting someone to catch a coffee with you it could make all the difference.

Every single day around 16 people decide to end their own life across England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, with men three times more likely to take their own lives than women. 1 in 5 people have thought about suicide at some time in their life. And not all people who die by suicide have mental health problems at the time they die. The majority of people who feel suicidal do not want to die; they do not want to live the life they have. The distinction may seem small but is very important. It’s why talking

36 January 2020

through other options at the right time is so vital. Research commissioned by Samaritans found eight out of 10 people believe getting together for tea and a talk makes them ‘feel better’ about their day. It’s so important to make your friends and family feel as though they can open up and to make them aware of how Samaritans can help if they find it hard to discuss things with their loved ones and want to talk to someone who doesn’t know them. Choose somewhere quiet, where you won’t be interrupted and the other person feels comfortable. Make sure you both have enough time to talk.

Get your free fundraising kit and have a brew your way and make a difference to someone’s life. By using your catch-up over coffee to help raise money for Samaritans, you can help make sure that someone who is going through a hard time has somewhere to turn if they need it. It costs £5 for Samaritans to be able to answer a call for help from someone struggling and who may need a friendly voice to listen to them. By signing up and getting your free fundraising kit you can make a donation to help someone in need, and perhaps even save a life.

What’s inside a fundraising kit? Your fundraising kit will include everything you need to help you raise awareness for your Brew Monday, and raise money for an amazing cause. The kit includes more information on the work Samaritans do, posters to display around your work or home, and great ideas to make it fun whilst raise the money.

Where can you have your Brew Monday? Absolutely anywhere! Have your Brew Monday at work — we all know that Monday morning feeling, but having a Brew Monday helps cheer up the office and lets colleagues and employers to get to know each other that bit better. Have your Brew in the comfort of your home — a Brew Monday is a good excuse to invite over neighbours, family, friends, or anyone for that matter! Make it a big event with lots of people, or keep it small and casual. With the cold winter weather outside, warm everyone up with their perfect cuppa and perhaps a biscuit or two! Have your Brew.... anywhere at all! At school, in the village hall or church, at the leisure centre, at the kid’s local club, anywhere that works for you! It’s the perfect way to introduce yourself to new people and make more friends by getting involved with the local community.

You can also support Samaritans in other ways too... Don’t fancy a Brew Monday but want to support Samaritans in another way? Why not win the lottery for a good cause! Sounds good, right? By playing Samaritan’s Lottery you will be entered into a weekly draw with the chance to win £25,000! It costs just £4.34

a month to enter – that’s enough to help answer one life-saving call for help. 50p of every £1 you play is guaranteed to go straight to Samaritans to support the amazing work they do. The remaining 50p will be used to provide prizes and cover administration costs.

Shop to save lives — yep, you read that right! Samaritan’s have their own charity shops, including online shopping available. Whether you shop in one of their charity shops or online, your support will mean Samaritans can be there to answer every call for help they receive.

Raise money by running a marathon. Fancy getting fit to raise money this year? You can find all the 2020 marathon events and locations at www.samaritans.org/ wales/support-us/events-and-fundraising/ events-and-challenges/.

For more information about how to get your free fundraising kit, other events you can get involved in, or to find out more about the work Samaritans do visit www.samaritans.org.
