UK homeowners are renowned for taking pride in their homes and gardens, from interior refurbishments, right through to elaborate exteriors. The summer months see us celebrate the sunshine with friends and family, with lavish barbeques in well-kept gardens. In contrast, the British winter can bring harsh storms with heavy rain and high winds, impacting on many homes causing damage to properties; with fallen garden fences often one of the first casualties. So, what if you had a beautiful and practical garden fence that didn’t deteriorate over time and could withstand extreme winds and weather conditions? ColourFence is here to change the way you think about your garden, whatever your style, this product will satisfy your requirements and your wallet. OM spoke to Robert Thomas of ColourFence Plymouth who told us about this long-lasting and highquality product that’ll change the way you look at your garden.

R

unning a business is certainly not a new venture for Robert Thomas, who has recently taken over ownership of the ColourFence Plymouth franchise. After two weeks of intensive training, set to be completed by the end of January, Robert will be on his way to success, providing ColourFence products to Plymouth and the surrounding area. As a businessman, Robert has a keen eye for identifying a quality product. After being made redundant from the Merchant Navy in 1984, 26-year old Robert settled down with his family to run the family business - a local caravan holiday park based in Modbury.

“I was very new to running a business and managing a team, but you’ve got to hit the ground running and learn as you go.” After taking over managing the park in 1985 he ran the site for nearly 16 years, but then Robert decided it was time to sell the park or invest and redevelop the park.

“Competition was increasing, and holiday companies were expanding and taking over the holiday park industry, so I had to either keep up with that or sell it.”

Some heavy weighing up led him to put the site up for sale, and it was sold in 2000; leading Robert into self-employment. As a strong-minded and determined businessman, he has seen himself working for various solar panel businesses, selling their products to consumers whilst developing his own business ideas. This finally made Robert decide it was time to focus his time, money and energy into one project.

Having always taken an interest in developing businesses, it’s no surprise that Robert has decided to invest his time and capital into the ColourFence Plymouth franchise. “I started to look at businesses for sale in the area, trying to ignore any preconceived ideas and keep an open mind. When researching different business ventures, I came across ColourFence and became excited when I read about how unique the product is, I realised this would be a great product to market in the Plymouth area, providing a much needed alternative to conventional timber fencing.” In September 2019, Robert did some number crunching and decided to visit their factory

Owner, Robert Thomas based in Wales for an open day, explaining - “I started to get excited about the prospect of running my own business again.” The ColourFence brand has been franchised throughout the UK with over 50 franchisees across the nation, Plymouth being the most recent. Despite being relatively new products, both ColourFence and the sister product ColourRail see high national demand which Robert as the local representative in Plymouth will be helping to fulfil. The product was first marketed in Australia and has been a popular garden feature for decades, accounting for at least 35% of the domestic fencing market down under. The product was brought to the UK 15 years ago by Climar Industries Ltd, the UK based manufacturer and distributor of ColorbondTM steel fencing and other long lasting, low-maintenance home and garden products.

ColourFence is a unique product, there’s nothing else like it in the UK. Unlike standard timber fences, ColourFence is designed to resist harsh weather conditions, and when installed by an accredited fitter will withstand wind gusts of up to 130mph. It also won’t crack, peel or warp in the sun so whatever mother nature has in store, ColourFence protects your garden all year round for decades to come. The weatherproof and durable ColourFence range has a number of core benefits that appeal to homeowners, not least the 25-year guarantee*. No painting, preserving,

repairs or harsh cleaning chemicals, just an occasional hose down to keep it looking as good as new. When fencing maintenance costs are high, you want an option that is easy, low maintenance and cost-effective; and ColourFence is all those things and more. The product is manufactured using ColorbondTM steel manufactured in Australia where it has been developed over 50 years and incorporates industry leading technology to resist corrosion. The components are manufactured in South Wales and are hand inspected to the highest quality standards. The care and technology that goes into the product ensures that even when the colour layer is scratched, the steel forms a protective layer to prevent corrosion. ColourFence is becoming increasingly popular across the UK with homeowners fed up of losing fences to winter storms and the hassle of replacing them. Equally, timber fences decay rapidly with a standard wooden fence often lasting less than 10 years and requiring regular treatment with paint and chemical cleaners. What is more, frustrated homeowners sometimes find that despite caring for their side of the fence, the neighbours are not always as proactive.

You can fit ColourFence into your own style by reflecting your own personality with 4 different colours to choose from and other options available to add, including decorative trellis or ball cap finials. Whether you would prefer to mix and match colours and styles or keep them uniform, you can choose a design to suit you; traditional Evergreen or Brown, or the more contemporary Bluestone or Cream might suit you better. The panels are 2.35 metres wide compared to 1.5 metres wide for standard timber

panels (so you need fewer panels like for like) and can be cut on-site to custom fit your garden, whatever the size and the natural contours of your land. The extended training process that accredited fitters undertake also means that they can fit customised solutions and a range of matching gates, plus ColourRail and the new ColourShed. First-class customer service is at the heart of everything ColourFence do and with a strong sales background, Robert is fully committed to ensuring every customer remains satisfied.

BEFORE

“We don’t hassle our customers - it sells itself” The team pride themselves on providing a service you’ll remember for all the right reasons. Robert tells us that his team will never pressure customers into a sale or outstay their welcome. ColourFence have put in place their ‘No Pressure Promise’, meaning they’ll always be punctual, polite and professional when completing your free, no-obligation survey and quote. Work will never be carried out unless Robert and his team are certain it will be an asset to the company and your garden. ColourFence are dedicated to ensuring you receive a highquality product with a professional service that meets your needs. Robert is always on hand to answer questions and queries. Pricing transparency is something else that sets ColourFence apart from other suppliers with the baseline prices for products and installation available on the website for a range of styles and heights up to 2 metres. The quality of customer care is demonstrated by all enquirers being able to book a free survey of their garden so they can get a precise quote for their job, meaning no nasty surprises.

“We also offer bespoke pricing for custom solutions, for example if the garden slopes.” ColourFence places value on being fairly and competitively priced; when compared to timber fencing. With no ongoing care costs for the length of the 25-year guarantee*, ColourFence offers unbeatable quality and value. ColourFence may be a relatively new product but it’s already experiencing huge demand with thousands of fences being fitted across

AFTER the UK every year. This has driven the development of gates, sheds and railings as happy customers strive to extend the ColourFence benefits to more of their garden.

The future is looking bright for Robert and the ColourFence team as they roll out orders across Plymouth and the surrounding areas. Not looking to retire any time soon, keeping his mind active is a top priority for Robert, making ColourFence a perfect fit for him. He is confident this incredibly long-lasting alternative to standard fencing will see the people of Plymouth change their view of garden fencing forever. His smart business attitude, desire to develop businesses and love for customer service, means we’re sure he’s going to have every success with ColourFence. To book your free no-obligation quote today, contact Robert on 01752 544944 or visit www.colourfenceplymouth.co.uk. *T&C’s apply. See website for details.

BUYING A HOME IN 2020 Is buying a home on your mind in 2o2o? New build or second-hand home? Are you a first-time buyer or just looking into resizing? We’ve done some research into why you should consider buying a home this year and what help is available to you.

S

aving up a deposit for a house and landing yourself on the property ladder is something that can set you back significantly; with the average deposit required for a house equating to around £20,000 for properties outside of London. And with a younger population eager to get themselves set up for the future early on in life with a house and mortgage, it means sacrificing those big nights out and takeaways to save for that much-needed deposit to reach their goal. Buying a home is one of the biggest financial commitments you’ll make, so you want to do it the right way and be sure you can afford it. Whether you’re a first-time buyer, secondtime buyer, looking for a new build or a second-hand home, there are many options out there to help you buy your dream home (or as close to it as your budget allows). Homes don’t come cheap and it’s not just the deposit and cost of the mortgage you’ve got to consider. Think stamp duty, fees for solicitors, moving costs, decoration, furniture, appliances and even bills... the list is never-ending. You’ve got to be financially secure and confident that you can cover the costs fully without stretching yourself too far.

You’re probably now crunching figures and having a meltdown at the cost of buying a home, but worry not as this is where the government schemes available to help you buy a home come in. There are several government schemes available to help you buy a home, these include Help to Buy and Shared Ownership, two of the most commonly used government schemes. For buyers who are struggling to buy a home on the open market, both Shared Ownership and the Help to Buy equity loan can offer great alternative routes onto the property ladder. However, there’s often confusion about the two schemes and how they differ from one another.

??

What is the Help to Buy: Equity Loan scheme? Help to Buy is a government-backed scheme, and the Help to Buy equity loan enables purchasers to buy a newbuild home with the help of an equity loan, also known as shared equity. The government provides a loan of up to 20% of the home (or 40% in Greater London), so the purchaser only needs to raise a 5% deposit, with a 75% mortgage (or 55% in Greater London) making up the rest. There are a few people that this scheme is available to, including first time buyers, those who have previously sold a home, or those who will have sold their current property before or at the point of completion on their Help to Buy home. Continue to page 16...

WHAT IS HELP TO BUY?

• There are two main schemes available to those who are looking to buy a new home in England - Help to Buy: Equity Loan and Help to Buy: Shared Ownership. • These schemes were launched by the government in April 2013 and the main aim was to give first time buyers a leg-up to the property ladder. • You can only purchase a new build home using the Help to Buy: Equity Loan scheme, whereas you can purchase a new build home or an exisiting resale property using the Help to Buy: Shared Ownership scheme. • You don’t have to be a first time buyer for either of these schemes, however you must meet the criteria set out by the government.

For more information visit www.helptobuy.gov.uk Continue to page 14...

HELP TO BUY ISA The Help to Buy ISA closed to new accounts at midnight on 30 November 2019. If you have already opened a Help to Buy ISA (or did so before 30 November 2019), you will be able to continue saving into your account until November 2029. If you are saving to buy your first home, save money into a Help to Buy: ISA and the Government will boost your savings by 25%.

So, for every £200 you save, receive a government bonus of £50. The maximum government bonus you can receive is £3,000.

This scheme is only available on new build homes, and you cannot buy a property that is on the market for more than £600,000. For a Help to Buy home, the deposit will be at least 5% of the full value of the home – for example, a 5% deposit of a home costing £500,000 would be £25,000. However, as the equity loan counts towards your deposit, you may be able to take out a mortgage where you might otherwise struggle; this also means that you don’t have to take out a costly 95% mortgage. When it comes to repaying your loan, you need to remember that it is interest-free for five years – during this time, you are only required to pay your mortgage and

a monthly management charge of £1. After the initial five years, the purchaser will pay an annual fee of 1.75% on the amount of the outstanding loan; this fee will increase each year with inflation.

What is the Help to Buy: Shared Ownership scheme? The Help to Buy: Shared Ownership scheme allows buyers to purchase a share of a home – usually between 25% and 75%. Purchasers will pay a mortgage on the share that they own, and a belowmarket-value rent on the remainder to a housing association. This scheme is available to first-time buyers, and those who are in the process of selling, or have previously owned a home but have since sold. To be eligible for Shared Ownership, your maximum household income must not exceed £80,000 per annum or £90,000 in London. Unlike the Help to Buy: Equity Loan scheme, the Shared Ownership scheme is available

on purpose-built homes – these will either be new build or resale properties that are being sold by the current shared owners. The deposit for a Shared Ownership home is at least 5% of the share that you are buying, not on the full value of the property. So, if a property costs £500,000 and you purchase a 25% share – equating to £125,000 – a 5% deposit on your share would be £6,250. A mortgage will be paid on the share you own, with a subsidised rent on the remainder being paid to the relevant housing association, along with any service charges and ground rent. If you choose to increase your owned shares (also known as ‘staircasing’), your monthly mortgage payments will increase and your rent will decrease, up until the stage where you own 100% of your property. At this time, you will only pay your mortgage.

To find out more information on the Help to Buy schemes, visit your local development sites or head to www.helptobuy.co.uk The Government Help to Buy schemes are allowing more people to land themselves a spot on the property ladder than ever before and new build homes are becoming an increasingly popular choice as they are a great option whether you’re a first-time buyer, have a growing family or “right-sizing” in later years. According to data from the Ministry of Housing, in 2019, the number of new homes created in England hit it’s highest level in almost 30 years with around 240,000 properties being added to the housing stock during 2018/19.

But what are the benefits of buying a new home? One of the main benefits of buying a new-build property is that, initially at least, it’s less likely to require the same level of maintenance that you’d face with an older property. Your energy bills may well be cheaper, too, given that they are usually better insulated than period homes. Continue to page 16...

And if you’re buying off-plan (i.e. before it’s actually been built), you may also be able to choose certain aspects of the design. One of the great advantages of buying a brand-new property is that, often, many of the fixtures and fittings you’d otherwise have to fork out for are included in the price. Exactly what’s included varies depending on the developer and what they are offering. You may (though not always) get washing machines or dishwashers thrown in, as well as wooden flooring or carpet. New build homes are built to much higher standards and with ever-rising energy costs, energy efficiency is an important aspect to consider when buying a new home. They have to comply with the latest building regulations. This means that new build homes are far more energy-efficient than older properties. Data from Energy Performance Certificates shows over 80% of new homes have the highest A or B ratings. That compares to just 2.2% of existing properties. Another benefit of buying a new build home is that it will come with a 10-year NHBC warranty covering structural defects. Most developers also provide their own two-year warranty. This means that if you have any problems it will be easily sorted out by the developer rather than you having to fork out thousands due to a mould ridden wall the seller in a secondhand home didn’t tell you about.

The process of buying a new home is often quite smooth due to there being no upward chain to contend with when you buy a new-build home, which means you won’t be stuck waiting for someone to sell a property before you can move in. One important thing to look out for when buying a new build home is whether it is a freehold or leasehold site. Ideally, you want to be investing in a property that is freehold due to the restrictions

and problems leasehold properties can cause later down the line, for example, if you want to add an extension onto your property you’ll need to get the approval from the freehold owner. When you buy a freehold property, you become the sole owner of both the building and the land it stands on and you won’t need to pay ground rent, service charges or permission fees, but you will be responsible for the maintenance of the building. Leaseholders have to get permission from the freeholder to make certain alterations to the property. They will also have to pay rent each year - known as ‘ground rent’ - and will often have to pay an annual fee to a managing agent. And of course, Help to Buy equity loans are exclusively available on new-build properties meaning you could be in a new home in no time.

The new homes market in the UK is growing rapidly and here in Plymouth, we are surrounded by new developments popping up constantly. Located on the outskirts of Britain’s ocean city, Sherford is the most notable development in the area. The land which

Since house construction began in 2016, Sherford has become home to over 150 residents with the community expanding rapidly as new residents move in every week, community facilities are also well underway with Sherford Primary School now open as well as the Skills Training Centre. Saltram Meadows in Plymstock is also a popular new development site with a wide range of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom homes on offer set in an idyllic location next to Saltram Estate. The development run by Persimmon Homes is now in phase 4 of construction and is continually growing. Also run by Persimmon Homes, Palmerston Heights located in the North of Plymouth is in phase 3 of its development. The site has a collection of two, three and four-bedroom homes on offer. Palmerston Heights is wellplaced to benefit from the council’s vision of a ‘New Derriford’. There’ll be new employment opportunities, a district shopping centre and the Forder Valley link road, providing residents with direct access to the A38 Devon Expressway. Hartley Gardens situated in Mannamead, Plymouth is completing its first phase of development with a stunning range of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments for sale as well as 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes on offer. Each of these development offers the opportunity for you to start the next chapter of your life with a new home, in a new community and with the Help to Buy: equity loan scheme on offer at each development site you are lost for choice.

If buying a home, new or old in 2020 is something you’re considering then remember to assess all of the possibilities and whether it’s a financially viable option for you. Take advantage of the schemes available to you and ensure you are making the right choice for you.

S O L I C I T O R S Meet Henry Lowson, Annabelle O’Higgins and Neil Adams

Having a well-established brand with legal experts on hand to give honest and reliable advice is key to any solicitor’s firm these days. As a client, you expect to be met with a friendly approach to make you feel at ease throughout the entire legal process no matter the issue. At award winning firm, Bright Solicitors, you’re sure to be met with top quality service from individuals who are competent, professional and approachable. Even though many firms still remain behind the times with this approach, they soon may need to re-think their structure. New technologies and increased competition are forcing the legal industry to slowly remake itself. We meet up with Henry, Annabelle and Neil to discuss why Bright seems to be the choice of the new generation of Solicitor firms.

E

xpert, legal advice is something many of us will need to invest in at some point during our lives. Whether that be due to moving home, updating a will or dealing with the death of a loved one. If first-class legal advice from a friendly, honest and approachable firm is what you want, look no further than Bright Solicitors based in Plymouth and Ivybridge, who offer all of the above and so much more when it comes to your legal requirements.

OM caught up with the team at Bright Solicitors who gave us an insight into their values as a firm, the services they provide, future plans and why you should choose them as your local solicitor. Bright Solicitors started in 2006 and since then have grown to become one of the leading solicitors offering both business and personal legal advice to clients in Plymouth and the surrounding areas.

With offices in Plymouth city centre and Ivybridge, the team are on hand to help clients across Devon and Cornwall with a friendly and honest approach. Henry Lowson, Partner and Head of the New Homes team; Annabelle O’Higgins, Solicitor for the Residential Property team and Neil Adams, Senior Paralegal on the Residential Property team tell us how the team at Bright Solicitors are working to provide the best service to all of their clients with a different approach than traditional law firms.

It’s not easy making the commitment to a solicitors firm with a host of choices right on your doorstep in Plymouth, but with Bright Solicitors the choice is obvious with their modern and honest approach to legal thinking. When it comes to top-notch legal advice, the team are always on hand to advise you on your business and personal legal issues, regardless of whether you’re a start-up or small to medium business looking for help, a first-time buyer or a residential client looking at moving home.

“We just want to be approachable and for people to be comfortable coming in to ask us questions, and then leaving with confidence that we can help with all of their legal issues” 18 February 2020

As you would expect from any solicitors firm, Bright Solicitors offer a wide range of services for their clients including commercial and corporate, commercial property, debt recovery and disputes, residential property, investment property, wills, trusts, probate and powers of attorney, intellectual property and trademark, and new homes. “The ethos behind the firm was that they wanted to be a little different to other firms of solicitors in terms of approachability. We’re not stuffed shirts with suits and ties, we’re just normal people here to help you with your legal issues” says Neil Adams, who has been a member of the team since 2007 working his way to now head up the Ivybridge office.

Since the firm was first established in 2006 they have grown rapidly, now operating with two offices in the area, Plymouth and Ivybridge. The team have expanded from a standing start with just a handful of staff in 2006 to now 55 across both offices with recruitment and training being a driving force within the firm. Focusing heavily on property and conveyancing, Bright Solicitors have a well-established Residential Property and New Homes team which is growing continuously. Henry Lowson, Head of the New Homes team has been with the company since 2013 and has seen his team expand from two to nine people with the Help to Buy scheme increasing their workload heavily. “With new homes and developments popping up all over the place. We work with many national developers and if you go to a new development and are looking to buy one of their plots, they’ll send you our way as their recommended solicitor to act for you, the buyer.” Buying a new home is often harder than many people expect compared to a second-hand home, with the process

www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

Henry and his team members: Lily Bisgaard, Katy Owen and Sarah Blatchford being long-winded. But whether it’s a new home you’re investing in or a secondhand home the team at Bright Solicitors have the knowledge and expertise to help make your move stress free, in a friendly, approachable and time-efficient manner. Strong relationships with many estate agents, developers and mortgage brokers across the region means each step of the process is easier for their clients. Alongside New Homes and Residential Property, the team see a high number of clients seeking advice for Wills and Probate services including Lasting Powers of Attorney.

Growth is on the cards for Bright Solicitors as various routes into the profession are seeing a younger workforce within the company. The desire to recruit and retain high calibre staff members with a fresh, modern outlook is something the company are focusing on. “We’re looking to grow as much as possible in the next few years. We’re not trying to be over-ambitious; we’ve got some realistic ideas about how big we want to be and we’re getting there. There is plenty of work out there to be done and we’re taking on a good share of it.”

Annabelle who has been with the firm for 3 years, working her way up to becoming a qualified solicitor on the Residential Property team, having completed her university training explains - “Our wills services goes hand in hand with property, working well for our clients and our business.”

Another thing the team are concentrating on is minimising their impact on the environment by reducing the amount of paper they are using as a company. The team are pushing new technology and eliminating the use of physical files by restricting printing options in the hope of increasing efficiency and reducing wastefulness.

Whatever your legal issue is, a member of the Bright team will always be on hand to help and understand your needs, whether you call the office or walk in off the street.

“It’s been widely accepted across the business. We are still a way off being paperless but we are definitely getting there. We are currently paper-light...”

“If somebody calls, we’re not suddenly going to be on the clock. Someone is always happy to speak with them and discuss the matter. Then once we know what it is they need from us we can go from there.”

It’s not often you walk into a law firm where the partners are seated within their teams, but at Bright Solicitors there are no individual offices, the office is entirely open plan aside from their client meeting rooms.

Solicitors fees are something most of us quibble and worry about due to the high expenditure it can be. Bright Solicitors have a transparent approach to fee, with fixed fees for a range of their services and the ability to view many of their fees online. The online conveyancing calculator is particularly popular with clients.

“Being approachable externally for our clients is important, as is being approachable internally within our office. Everyone is open and happy to help each other out. The atmosphere is very friendly and relaxed”

It is clear to us that Bright Solicitors are committed to building long term relationships with their clients with their personal approach to client care. There is certainly no doubt that growth, recruitment and training are on the forefront of their plans and we’re looking forward to seeing what 2020 brings for the team at Bright Solicitors.

The team have a strong bond and playing an active role in events across the city is something they thrive off, doing their bit to give back to charity. Bright Solicitors are

After four years of hard work, preparation and planning, something new and exciting is about to hit Plymouth for the very first time. Flick Fest is an independent film festival where a team of highly focused individuals will come together this April to celebrate filmography at its finest. Following on from January’s issue of OM, we met up with Jacqui Cant of multimedia company, Skymind Studios, to get the lowdown on all things Flick Fest 2020.

F

lick Fest 2020 is a brand new independent film festival brought to Plymouth by Jacqui and her team at Skymind Studios in affiliation with Diverse Events. Hosted at The Red House on 2nd April to 4th April, this 3-day festival will bring a whole host of fun for everyone to enjoy; all whilst celebrating filmography in all of its glory. As a filmmaker by trade, Jaqui’s pure passion for the art of film has inspired this event to be brought to life for the first time, for the people of Plymouth and beyond to embrace this coming April. Flick Fest aims to educate and get people involved in the world of film, as well as giving creatives in the South West a chance to show off their skills when the competitiveness of the arts scene in the UK hasn’t allowed them to. Planning events isn’t a new venture for Jacqui as she is regularly involved in organising events in and around Plymouth. Her latest event, Flick Fest has been in the planning for four years with Jacqui and her team of creatives perfecting and fine-tuning each detail to ensure it succeeds in every way.

“I wanted to work on the idea and how I could implement it properly to become a success” The concept for an independent film festival in the heart of Plymouth stemmed from Jacqui’s involvement in various events such as South West Comic-Con where her passion for film was celebrated with like-minded individuals. FlickFest is aimed at anyone who has a love and desire for film, whether you’re a student or professional filmmaker, there are a range of categories for all to submit to including: Best Animated Short, Best Documentary Short and Best Action Short all with a maximum limit of 20 minutes, Composers Best Short Film Soundtrack with a 3-5 minute limit and finally the subject matter student category where students are challenged to produce a 3-minute film based on the question: ‘What does disability mean to you?’. To apply and submit a short film for Flick Fest, applicants must contact Jacqui via email, or head to the Flick Fest Facebook page or website to download an application form. Submissions for Flick Fest are open until midnight on 2nd March 2020 and a fee of £15 is required for each category apart from the student category where the fee is reduced to £5. Ten entrants for each category will be shortlisted with their films then being featured during the 3 day Flick Fest event in April. Alongside the amalgamation of short films premiering during the event, Jacqui has ensured there is something for all to enjoy at Flick Fest, from face painting for the kids to film-based workshops, all with a Comic-Con twist to the event. Tickets for the event can be purchased for a small fee with details for this being released in the coming weeks.

Event organiser, Jacqui Cant! “I always link my projects and events to myself in some way” Jacqui is committed to helping others and giving back to the community whenever she can with all of her projects. In honour of this, Flick Fest is proudly supporting Improving Lives Plymouth, a charity very close to Jacqui’s heart. The event will help raise awareness and support the charity with the incredible work they do for the people of Plymouth. Unlike other film festivals, Flick Fest aims to support the minority and where categories are usually limited and strict; Jacqui has ensured Flick Fest is more relaxed with open categories for applicants. The composer category being the most notable difference to other festivals, allowing makers of musical pieces to be recognised for their contribution to the film industry.

“Film is how I started and I’ve always wanted to do something I love” Her dedication and passion for film and giving back to her community, exceeds anything else we’ve seen before here at OM. Jacqui never lets an obstacle get in her way and we are excited to see what Flick Fest brings to Plymouth in April.

For more information about Flick Fest and how to apply call Jacqui on 07543094702 or email skymindstudios@gmail.com. February 2020 23

NATIONAL PIZZA DAY The best day of the year has arrived... yes that’s right, the 9th of February is National Pizza Day!

S

intolerant or the odd one out that loves ham and pineapple on pizza there are plenty of options for all. And the best thing is that all the family are welcome to celebrate National Pizza Day at The Stable... even the dog (although maybe a doggy biscuit for them instead of pizza).

unday 9th February brings us National Pizza Day and what better way to spend your Sunday evening than stuffing your face with everyone’s favourite cheat food? There is something for all to enjoy whatever your needs; whether you’re staying healthy in 2020 with a ban on takeaways or fancy treating yourself to an evening at your favourite local restaurant indulging in the deliciousness of pizza. Celebrated on February 9th each year – National Pizza Day is a day that celebrates all things pizza, where you can enjoy one of the most popular and iconic dishes in the world. Here are a few ways you can celebrate National Pizza Day this February:

Takeaway... Who doesn’t look a cheeky weekend takeaway?! There’s nothing more satisfying than treating yourself after a long week in the office to a cheesy, greasy pizza and the best thing about takeaways is that you don’t even have to leave the house. So, get snuggled up in your pj’s and fluffy socks, pop on the latest episode of your favourite TV show and get ordering. You could even have a pizza party with your friends or family. Bulk order in the Domino’s and enjoy a night of fun and games whilst tucking into some yummy pizza!

Home-made... Why not challenge yourself and make some sumptuous home-made pizzas to celebrate National Pizza Day. Grab the kitchen scales and get kneading some dough or buy some shop-bought bases... for those of you that want to cheat a little. And if you struggle with the dietary requirements that come with vegan or non-gluten diets then homemade pizzas will allow you to easily cater for your own needs without being made to feel awkward or fussy.

If authentic, hand made sourdough is more your pizzas style then you must visit Knead Pizza, a hidden gem at the heart of Plymouth Market. For a relaxed atmosphere and pizzas that’ll leave your tastebuds tingling for days don’t miss out on scrumptious sourdough with all of your favourite toppings on this iconic day. Knead Pizza has got all of your pizza kneads covered to celebrate National Pizza Day this February.

The great thing about home-made pizzas is that you can be as creative as you want and adventurous with your flavours all on a budget. Opting to create homemade pizzas is a wonderful way of bonding with your family, so turn National Pizza Day into a fun activity for all of the family to enjoy or even make a date night out of it.

Another staple Italian cuisine to visit in honour of National Pizza Day is Zizzi’s, situated in Drake Circus, The Barcode. With Italian themes across the restaurant, from the open kitchen focusing around the woodstone oven to the delicious dishes of Italian origin, there is no better way to celebrate this day than dining out with your nearest and dearest in this uniquely designed restaurant. Worry not if you have a special diet as the team at Zizzi’s can cater for all diets including vegan, vegetarian, vegan and non-gluten as well as having a yummy kids menu for the little ones to enjoy.

Dine Out...

Whether you like New York-style or the classic Neapolitan; thin, thick, or handtossed crust; vegan, extra-cheesy, or ham and pineapple - chances are there’s a slice of pizza with your name on it. And if you consider pizza one of your favourite meals (if not your absolute favourite), you’re not alone: pizza is one of the most popular dishes across the globe.

But have you ever wondered where pizza came from and why it’s one of the most loved dishes internationally? It has been suggested that pizza was in fact created in ancient times in the Middle East with The Greeks and Egyptians creating some derivative of pizza in those times using flatbread and topping it with olive oil and spices, what we know now to be ‘focaccia’. But we all know that the Italians are the real creators of the classic pizza we know and love today and if weren’t aware of that, where have you been and what planet are you from?! Over the years pizza has changed with many variations across the globe. The staple classic Italian Margherita Pizza has evolved to many different forms with a huge array of toppings available and a variety of dough options used to create everyone’s favourite dish.

From classic crust to stuffed crust, deep-pan, thin or sourdough... how much do you know about pizza styles and crusts? Let’s start with the classic Neapolitan Pizza, this Italian classic dates back to 18th century Naples and has remained a popular choice for many across the globe with the standard features of tomatoes, garlic, oregano, mozzarella and extra virgin olive oil. What is not to love about this classic pizza? On to the New York Style pizza now, notoriously known for it’s large, foldable slices and crispy outer crust, this style of pizza has become one of the world’s most loved styles from New York to the UK. New York-style pizza usually features tomato

sauce and mozzarella cheese. Unlike its thin-crust counterpart, the Neapolitan, New York-style pizzas can handle a wide range of additional toppings, from pepperoni and sausage to mushroom and anchovies.

the number of toppings on offer, it’s no surprise. Research carried out by YouGov has revealed the UK’s most popular pizza topping and it’s certainly not what you thought it would be...

Pizza Romano is becoming increasingly popular in the world of pizza. This very thin, large and crunchy style of pizza was hugely popular among the Romans. The dough is hand-stretched and different to the classic Neapolitan pizza, Pizza Romano tends to be full of flavoursome toppings such as ham and mushroom but can equally be enjoyed as the classic Margherita.

We can reveal the most loved topping by UK pizza lovers is in fact...MUSHROOMS...so move aside pepperoni!

We can’t forget to mention the different crusts available when it comes to pizza. Thick and thin crusts have varied across the years both remainly a popular option. But well-known brands such as Domino’s, Pizza Hut and Papa Johns have evolved the pizza crust with stuffed crust now being an exceedingly popular choice with the nation, from mozzerela cheese to hot dogs, the possibilities are endless when it comes to pizza crust.

Let’s talk statistics... With many options available when it comes to pizza toppings you really are lost for choice, each restaurant and eatery has a wide range of options to choose from with every diet now being catered for at takeaways, supermarkets and when dining out. A study carried out in 2018 by VoucherCodes.co.uk found that the average Brit will munch their way through 731 pizzas in their lifetime which would equate to roughly 5,847 slices! It’s also been suggested that the typical pizza lover will fork out a huge £9725 on takeaway versions of the iconic takeaway meal and another £6303 on supermarket pizzas... That’s £16000 on just pizza in one year!!!

On to toppings... When it comes to toppings, we are rather divided as a nation but when you consider

The survey of 3,683 adults found that 65% preferred the fleshy fungus, with onion (62%), ham (61%), peppers (60%), chicken (56%), pepperoni (56%) and tomato all following closely behind. But let’s face it, what we really care about isn’t whether mushrooms or pepperoni are our favourite pizza topping in the UK. No, the biggest pizza debate of all is whether pineapple belongs on our favourite dish. It is arguably the most divisive foodrelated debate in the world: the question of whether pineapple is an appropriate pizza topping is a controversial one across the globe. It’s a little bit like marmite, you either love it or hate it. This controversial topping is loved by 42% of people surveyed and we’re not at all surprised nearly half of the nation love it. We can confirm that here in the OM office it’s 4 against 1 when it comes to loving pineapple on pizza. What is there not to love about the sweetness of the pineapple juice balancing out the savoury flavour of the cheese and ham?

What are your thoughts on this debate... get in touch via our socials to lets us know where you stand on the ‘Pineapple or No Pineapple’ debate! However you plan on spending National Pizza Day, remember to embrace the lusciousness of the nations favourite meal whether you grab a takeaway or dine out with your loved one. Be creative, try some new, and most of all celebrate pizza!

Recipe ideas

February brings a host of occasions to get us in the kitchen exploring new recipes and cooking up a feast. With Valentine’s Day, Pancake Day and National Pizza Day there’s plenty of choice in the kitchen. Enjoy a lavish breakfast in bed with home-made pancakes or tackle home-made pizza’s this for date-night this February!

Fluffy American pancakes 135g/4¾oz plain flour, 1 tsp baking powder, ½ tsp salt, 2 tbsp caster sugar, 130ml/4½fl oz milk, 1 large egg, lightly beaten, 2 tbsp melted butter (allowed to cool slightly) or olive oil, plus extra for cooking One Sift the flour, baking powder, salt and caster sugar into a large bowl. In a separate bowl or jug, lightly whisk together the milk and egg, then whisk in the melted butter. Two Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture and, using a fork, beat until you have a smooth batter. Any lumps will soon disappear with a little mixing. Let the batter stand for a few minutes. THREE Heat a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and add a knob of butter. When it’s melted, add a ladle of batter (or two if your frying pan is big enough to cook two pancakes at the same time). It will seem very thick but this is how it should be. Wait until the top of the pancake begins to bubble, then turn it over and cook until both sides are golden brown and the pancake has risen to about 1cm (½in) thick. FOUR Repeat until all the batter is used up. You can keep the pancakes warm in a low oven, but they taste best fresh out the pan. Serve with lashings of real maple syrup and extra butter, if you like.

Homemade Pizza For the Pizza Dough (enough for two 12 inch bases): 550g of strong white flour, 7g of dried yeast (usually one sachet), 1 tsp of table salt, 1 tsp of caster sugar, 320ml of luke warm water, Pepper to season, 2 tbsp of olive oil For the Pizza Base Sauce: Tin of chopped tomatoes, 2 tbsp of tomato Puree, 1 tbsp olive oil, Pepper to season, Coarse salt to season, 2 cloves of garlic (crushed or finely chopped), 1 tsp of basil, 1 tsp of oregano, 1 tsp Thyme For the Toppings: Grated cheddar and mozzarella, Toppings of your choice One Sieve the strong white flour into a large mixing bowl, add the salt and pepper. Add the water, yeast, sugar and olive oil into a jug and leave for 3 minutes to allow the yeast to activate. Two Slowly pour the wet mixture into the mixing bowl while stirring using a wooden spoon until everything is roughly mixed. Then, using your hands, further mix and knead the dough until it is elastic and slightly tacky but not over sticky. Place the dough in the mixing bowl and cover with a damp tea towel and leave for 1 hour until the dough has doubled in size. Three Take the dough and knead it for a few minutes to take some of the air out. Split it into two equal parts. If you are only wishing to make 1 pizza then you can freeze the extra dough. For the sauce, put all sauce ingredients into a blender for 30 seconds until you are left with a thick, light red sauce. Four Flour a work surface and using a rolling pin, roll the dough until it is roughly the size of the pizza tray you are using. Place the rolled out dough onto the tray and using your fingers, work the dough until it fills the tray. FIVE Brush the surface of the dough with olive oil and then add enough sauce mix to cover the base spreading evenly. Sprinkle on the grated cheese followed by your topping choice. Cook the pizza in preheated oven at 200C for 20 minutes and then serve.

FIVE a-day chicken with kale AND pistachio pesto Olive oil, 500g butternut squash, peeled and cut into thin slices (keep the seeds if you like and toast them on a separate tray to scatter over the finished dish), 200g shallots (peeled and halved), 300g leeks (use baby leeks or cut large ones into lengths and halve them, 300g carrots (use baby ones or cut them into long batons), 400g fennel (cut into long wedges), 1 garlic bulb (halved through the middle), 3-4 large or 6-8 small chicken thighs (depending on whether you’re serving 3 or 4), skin patted dry For the pesto: 200g chopped kale (woody stalks removed), 1 garlic clove, crushed, 2 tbsp pistachio kernels, 2 tbsp grated parmesan, ½ lemon (juiced), 60ml olive oil ONE Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Put all the veg for the bake except the garlic in a large bowl and add 1 tbsp olive oil, then carefully turn everything over with your hands so the oil adds a very thin coating. Lightly oil the tray as well if you are worried about things sticking. Two Arrange the veg in piles on the tray, or scatter it all over if you prefer. Add the garlic halves and the chicken, sitting the chicken on top of the veg. Season well and bake for 40 mins then, if the chicken skin is still pale, either turn the oven up or turn it onto the grill setting, and cook or grill until it is nicely browned. THREE Meanwhile, make the pesto. Whizz the kale, garlic and pistachios until everything is finely chopped. Add the parmesan, lemon juice and olive oil and whizz again. Add a splash of water to loosen. Any left over will keep in a jar for up to three days in the fridge. Serve the chicken and veg with the pesto spooned over.

Ultimate spaghetti carbonara 100g pancetta, 50g pecorino cheese, 50g parmesan, 3 large eggs, 350g spaghetti, 2 plump garlic cloves (peeled and left whole), 50g unsalted butter, sea salt and freshly grated black pepper ONE Put a large saucepan of water on to boil. Finely chop the 100g pancetta, having first removed any rind. Finely grate 50g pecorino cheese and 50g parmesan and mix them together. two Beat the 3 large eggs in a medium bowl and season with a little freshly grated black pepper. Set everything aside. Add 1 tsp salt to the boiling water, add 350g spaghetti and when the water comes back to the boil, cook at a constant simmer, covered, for 10 minutes or until al dente (just cooked). Three Squash 2 peeled plump garlic cloves with the blade of a knife, just to bruise it. While the spaghetti is cooking, fry the pancetta with the garlic. Drop 50g unsalted butter into a large frying pan or wok and, as soon as the butter has melted, tip in the pancetta and garlic. FOUR Leave to cook on a medium heat for about 5 minutes, stirring often, until the pancetta is golden and crisp. The garlic has now imparted its flavour, so take it out with a slotted spoon and discard. Keep the heat under the pancetta on low. When the pasta is ready, lift it from the water with a pasta fork or tongs and put it in the frying pan with the pancetta. Don’t worry if a little water drops in the pan as well (you want this to happen) and don’t throw the pasta water away yet. FIVE Mix most of the cheese in with the eggs, keeping a small handful back for sprinkling over later. Take the pan of spaghetti and pancetta off the heat. Now quickly pour in the eggs and cheese. Using the tongs or a long fork, lift up the spaghetti so it mixes easily with the egg mixture, which thickens but doesn’t scramble, and everything is coated. SIX Add extra pasta cooking water to keep it saucy (several tablespoons should do it). You don’t want it wet, just moist. Season with a little salt, if needed. Use a long-pronged fork to twist the pasta on to the serving plate or bowl. Serve immediately with a little sprinkling of the remaining cheese and a grating of black pepper. If the dish does get a little dry before serving, splash in some more hot pasta water and the glossy sauciness will be revived.

NATIONAL HEART MONTH Written by Charlotte Cooper We all know that making healthy choices can help us feel better and live longer. By creating new healthy habits now, like eating good food and keeping physical, you can make them become part of your daily routine.

C

hanging your habits is a process that takes longer than people realise. Often it takes a while before changes become new habits. But, once you adopt these new healthier habits into your everyday life, they may protect you from serious health problems in the future. According to NIH (News In Health), regular things you do, from brushing your teeth to having a few drinks every night, can become habits. Repetitive behaviors that make you feel good can affect your brain in ways that create habits that may be hard to change. Habits often become automatic — they happen without much thought.

This is why making sure you include healthy habits repeatedly in your daily life is so important. Once you do these things for long enough, you will start doing them naturally without much thought. This is how it appears almost effortless to stay active and fit for some healthy people — they have been doing it for so long, it has become normal to them.

According to Healthline, meal planning can be a helpful tool if you’re trying to lose weight or improve your nutritional intake. If you plan your meals properly and ensure you hit the right calorie intake for each meal, it can help you with weight loss while providing your body with the nutritious foods it needs to function and remain healthy.

Here are six healthy habits to start including in your daily routine.

Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day.

Start planning your meals throughout the week to make sure you get all the vitamins and proteins your body needs.

Studies show that those who eat breakfast tend to lower their risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol. And those who don’t eat breakfast tend to weigh more and have more metabolic problems, according to Cleveland Clinic. Lots of people mistake skipping breakfast as a positive thing, as they believe they are consuming fewer calories in the day. However, skipping breakfast is tied to a boost in appetite later in the day. This afternoon appetite often leads to overeating, unhealthy food choices, and consequently more calories.

Make sure you get enough sleep every single night. Getting a good night’s sleep does more than make you feel refreshed the following morning. According to Bupa, a lack of sleep can increase your risk of developing high blood pressure, diabetes and coronary

heart disease. Not only that, but poor sleep has also been linked to poor insulin regulation and resistance. So getting enough sleep is an important factor in looking after your cardiovascular health.

Drink lots of water to help your heart do its job. According to the Heart Foundation, your heart is working constantly, pumping about 2,000 gallons of blood a day. By staying hydrated and drinking more water than you are losing, you help your heart do its job.

Just as exercise strengthens other muscles in your body, it helps your heart muscle stay strong too. Regular exercise has been proven to increase your cardiovascular health. Exercise improves your heart health by lowering your blood pressure. It also helps with your cholesterol levels, and blood sugar regulation. “Doing 30 minutes of moderate physical activity a day can help to reduce your risk of heart disease” — Heart Foundation.

Dehydration can negatively affect your organs and bodily functions, including your heart and cardiovascular system. When you are dehydrated your blood volume, or the amount of blood circulating through your body, decreases. To compensate, your heart beats faster, increasing your heart rate and your blood pressure.

“30 minutes a day is the sweet spot for nearly maximal health protection” — Harvard Health Publishing.

A hydrated heart can pump blood more easily, allowing the muscles in your body to work even better.

With all that in mind, go to bed early tonight and rise and shine with a healthy cup of oats, grab your running shoes, and stay hydrated — it’s time to start your journey to a happier, healthier heart.

If you smoke, stop! Quitting smoking is the single best thing you can do for your heart health.

It’s never too late to start exercising more often. Everyone can benefit from more daily activity, whatever your age, size or physical condition.

Stopping smoking has so many health benefits and it’s never too late to give up. “Smokers are almost twice as likely to have a heart attack compared with people who have never smoked,” says the British Heart Foundation. Smoking damages the lining of your arteries. This damage leads to a build-up of fatty material which narrows the artery. The narrowing of the artery can cause angina, a heart attack or a stroke. “Smoking increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, which includes coronary heart disease and stroke.” Carbon monoxide also makes it harder for your heart to keep working. This is because the carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke reduces the amount of oxygen in your blood. The low oxygen in your blood results in your heart having to pump harder to supply the body with the oxygen it needs to keep you alive. The nicotine in cigarettes also causes your heart harm. The nicotine stimulates your body to produce adrenaline, which makes your heart beat faster and consequently raises your blood pressure, making your heart work harder. For more information about the risks of smoking for your heart, including blood clotting, visit www.bhf.org.uk.

Why? There is no doubt that regular exercise has health benefits as keeping up a regular exercise routine improves your overall fitness, which helps boost your immune system.

Fruits and vegetables are packed full of super-strength vitamin C which has long been considered the ideal precaution against catching a common cold.

You may want to come home and snuggle up with a sweater and slippers, but those running shoes will be far more beneficial to your health this season! Continue to page 40...

It’s important to stay protected against the winter chill as cold weather can affect your body’s ability to fight off infection. Keep your body warm with hats, scarves, gloves and more, and perhaps crank up the heating at home for extra warmth for the winter mornings.

Make sure you’re resting and getting enough sleep. Your body needs to get enough sleep to keep it in fighting-shape to protect you from the pesky germs. When you don’t allow your body the rest it becomes weaker and doesn’t have the strength to shield you from bothersome bugs.

Try to avoid those who sound slightly snotty this season.

Sorry to say but skipping that postwork pint will keep you healthy.

It may difficult if your colleagues or family members have caught a cold to completely avoid them, but where possible it’s a good idea to keep your distance.

Some research shows that drinking alcohol can damage the body’s dendritic cells, a vital component of the immune system. Therefore drinking alcohol every evening with your meal can increase your risk of bacterial and viral infections.

If you have to be in close proximity it’s vital to keep washing your hands as much as possible and sending those germs on a trip down the drain pipe. Even better, purchase a pocket-sized hand sanitiser and use it as much possible throughout the day, particularly if you’re handling the same items or using the same facilities as your colleagues.

Keep your surroundings super clean and a germ-free zone. Germs spread easily throughout your house and workplace so you’re at a much greater risk if you don’t get the sponge out soon enough!

8-10 hours of sleep during the snowy season should keep you in tip-top condition.

Another reason to quit smoking for New Year. Smoking is a known risk factor for several diseases, but not many people know that people who smoke, and people who breathe in second-hand smoke, are also more likely to experience severe symptoms when they catch a cold. Studies have shown that cigarette smoke can affect the immune system and reduce your ability to fight off those persistent germs.

Put your woolliest winter hat and scarf on to keep yourself toasty!

Use anti-bacterial cleaners frequently and encourage your colleagues, friends, and family members to cough or sneeze into a tissue rather than their hand, and to dispose of the tissue right away, then clean their hands with a hand sanitiser or soap and water. The Centers for Disease Control recommends washing hands for at least 10 to 15 seconds to effectively remove germs.

Switch your go-to brew for a green tea instead. Green tea is known for its great health benefits with its high level of antioxidants, called flavonoids. This antioxidant activity helps support your body when it’s under attack and can soothe sickly symptoms. As always, keep yourself hydrated with plenty of water throughout your day too
