BUSINESS PROFILE Martin Pomeroy, proprietor of Pomdoo- has over 14 years experience as a wood floor specialist, and his passion is clearly what drives the success of his business forward. Now entering its 5th year, Pomdoo’s ethos is simple: Do what you said you were going to do, when you said you would do it and for the price you said you would do it for!

Fast forward 10 years of working in the wooden flooring industry in the South West, Martin made the bold move to leave and start up his own company in March 2014.“I was essentially leaving a stable job for the unknown; of course it was a risk- especially having a young family at the time”.

I didn’t have any doubts because when you break it down it’s simple. If you turn up and do what you said you were going to do, for a price you’ve already quoted- you will always get work. It’s just down to the basics, do as you say!

In a short amount of time, Martin acquired his first large job under the Pomdoo name. Through recommendation, Martin was appointed to fit over 12,500 blocks of reclaimed Parquet flooring at Glazebrook House in South Brent. “I was there for 9

The Glazebrook House job kick-started Martin’s business- and he soon found himself booked up four weeks in advance. “My wife was nervous of course, because I’d taken this risk. I was confident that once I’d built my reputation work would come and it did”.

“I’ve got a passion for turning up to these old rubbish floors, working our magic and turning them into something brand new. It’s a fantastic feeling making that change. My wife complains whenever we go anywhere- I am always looking at the floor.”

Alan Pollard: who joined Martin in April 2016, has over 13 years experience when it comes to wooden floors. “I didn’t really want to take anyone on to be honest! It hadn’t crossed my mind, but when Alan left his previous role, he had all those years experience and I just had to utilise that”. Not only did Martin gain a new team member, he also made the decision to purchase another Pomdoo van.

“You lose a lot of work when you say you can’t get to people for 2 months. With the second van we were shortening our waiting times and gaining more jobs as a result”. Now Martin has seen how well it is going, he tells us he would ideally like to expand the team even further in the future. Moving on to some of the jobs Pomdoo have undertaken, Martin tells us that he has an extensive portfolio of both commercial and residential properties. With the main focus being on residential as this is where Pomdoo’s preference lies- Martin also tells us that they recently completed the fitment of the Trevilder Restaurant floor

located in Thurlestone Hotel. “Commercial jobs are usually a little more complex as you have to communicate with a number of other tradesman on the same job”. Perhaps you have a hidden gem that needs restoring underneath your carpets, or need a brand new wooden floor fitted by professionals- Pomdoo can do it all. “We don’t do cheap. We offer a quality service as we take pride in what we do. People are always going to be happy because that’s what we strive for”.

Martin tells us he has always been handy, having previous experience in metal plating for Aerospace in Uxbridge near where he was raised. Martin made the move to Plymouth in 2003; after meeting his wife Alison who is originally from Plymouth and deciding it is in fact better down south!

weeks. I finished my previous job on a Friday- the following Friday I was on my hands and Knees at Glazebrook fitting over 220 sq meters of parquet!”

P

omdoo are specialists in wood flooring. Currently consisting of Martin Pomeroy and Alan Pollard, the pair have a combined experience of over 27 years. Offering professional services in sanding, sealing, installation and repairPomdoo have particular interest and expertise in the fitting and maintenance of parquet flooring and period properties.

If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing right. Everything I do is with an immense amount of pride and attention to detail

Talking through the typical process, Martin explains that even the worst floors can be restored. The room must be clear of all furniture and carpets prior to arrival so the job can be completed as swiftly as possible. Pomdoo then move in with their top of the range sanding machines- which are 98% dust free.

“I’ve had numerous people say to me over the years, they’ve sanded their floors and the entire house is covered in dust. That’s because they were more than likely using rental machines which are not top of the range or virtually dust free”.

www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

PLYMOUTH POMDOO GARDEN MACHINERY The floor is sanded back down to bare wood, with special attention on all the corners and crevices to ensure a professional job is done. Once the floor has been sanded- it is then ready for whatever finish the client would like. Martin explains that usually a Matt varnish is the most popular choice- however; past clients have chosen to go as dark or as light as they wish!

A major concern that people have when it comes to work being undertaken in their house, is potential for mess and distraction. Our sanding machines are purpose built for the trade so are 98% dust free

Pomdoo are specialists when it comes to Parquet flooring. Parquet, which originated in France-, is the application of small hardwood or softwood pieces in various geometric shapes.

The popularity of Parquet dwindled when carpets were introduced, but resurfaced again in the 1990’s and is now an artistic addition to many modern homes. Martin explains that there is practically no room for error with this type of application- and any minor flaws will be noticeable. Pomdoo pride themselves in being Parquet specialists and will take on any fitting, repair or restoration no matter how big or small. When it comes to aftercare, Pomdoo link every happy customer to their website or explain how to look after their new floors. “The aftercare is extremely important. The floor has to be left alone for the varnish to dry for at least 48 hours. Only after this period of time can the furniture be put back and even then- we stress the importance of felt pads underneath so not to scratch the surface”. Pomdoo pride themselves on their work, so want to ensure that every customer knows exactly how to maintain their beautiful new floor so they can enjoy it for years to come. As a modern business, Pomdoo understand the importance of social media to gain maximum exposure. Martin regularly updates the Pomdoo Facebook page to showcase the duo’s hard work.

“I try to paint a broader picture of what we do. Facebook is great for visuals. It’s so easy to snap a few pictures on a job and upload them straight away for our followers to see. “I try and get a good mixture and tick all of the boxes. I upload a good range of floors so if someone stumbles across us, they know exactly what we can do”.

American Black Wood Installation

Pomdoo have just entered their fifth year as a business, and Martin has given himself plenty of scope to expand. “In the near future I would definitely like to have a larger team, another van- so we can take on more jobs with shorter waiting times. Pomdoo currently service areas within a 35 mile radius of Plymouth, travelling as far as Tavistock, Dartmouth, Looe and Totnes. Martin explains that he doesn’t currently have any plans to reach even further; as he likes being a local, reliable business.

Engineered Oak Installation

Martin would also like to expand the products on offer at Pomdoo, and possibly look into supplying and fitting luxury vinyl tiling. “Vinyl tiles would be a great addition to the services as they reinforce the quality aspect of what Pomdoo offer”. “Perhaps as a natural progression to the business, we could offer a painting and decorating service to go hand in hand with the floor finishing- we could offer the complete Pomdoo package!”

Parquet Flooring, Sanded and sealed

My main focus when I first started was to build the brand first. Pomdoo stands for quality and that’s it first and foremost. When we turn up, you know the job is going to be done right. Martin concludes by telling us “I would hope that we have accomplished that so now I can think about expanding, because our name will stand for something”. Pomdoo offer free no obligation quotations, see their website below for more details.

With warmer months on the horizon, we introduce your 3 new best friends when it comes to cleaning. Even better, these are likely to be hanging around in your kitchen cupboards already!

When Life Gives You Lemons: ● Give your Chrome bathroom fixtures a new shine this Spring. Run the cut side of a lemon over taps, fixtures and drains to remove mineral deposits and make them sparkle. Rinse and dry thoroughly when you’re done. With the citrus scent of the lemon, your bathroom will not only gleam but smell fresh too! ● Get ready for summer by scrubbing your BBQ grills and grates with lemon juice and salt to remove any debris. ● If your cutlery has seen better days and is looking dull, lemon juice can help spruce up your knives and forks and also remove rust spots. ● Get stains out of a cutting board or butcher block by rubbing the cut side of a lemon over food stains and smells. For extra cleaning power, sprinkle it with salt or baking soda first.

Keep it Fresh

Make it Shine with Vinegar:

Stain Banishing Baking Soda:

● Sunshine is around the corner, so let it in through clean windows! Mix equal parts of distilled white vinegar and water and sponge onto your windows and then wipe clean.

● Tired of water rings on your furniture? Take 1 part white non-gel toothpaste and 1 part baking soda on a dampened cloth. Rub with the grain to buff the spot and then take a soft dry cloth to wipe off and shine. Avoid using on unfinished wood, lacquer, or antiques.

● Spruce up your carpet and say goodbye to stains with vinegar. Rub light carpet stains with a mixture of 2 tablespoons salt dissolved in 1/2 cup white vinegar. Let the solution dry, then vacuum. ● Microwave looking grubby? Using a half and half combination of vinegar and water, you can create a solution that will help you tackle those stubborn stains. Heat the mix for ten minutes in your microwave, until it steams up. Remove the jug and then use a cloth to wipe away the moisture and dirt. ● Put one cup full of vinegar in the bottom of your dishwasher before you run the cycle. After you run the dishwasher, your glassware shouldn’t be cloudy.

● Remove those tough tea and coffee stains from mugs by soaking them with 1 part baking soda and 2 parts water. ● A natural deodoriser, sprinkle baking soda in your laundry storage, pet bed, fridge, bins and on your upholstery to freshen up your home. ● When the kids have decided to attack your walls with crayons, it’s time to call in the baking soda. Make a paste with equal parts of powder and water and dab it onto the area. Let it dry and then wipe away. This method works best on white walls.

BUSINESS PROFILE Luke Foster first found his green fingers while helping his grandma with her window boxes and hanging baskets at the age of 11. From there, Luke has grown himself a thriving gardening business reaching throughout Plymouth as well as spreading across Cornwall and many parts of South Devon. We speak to the Man for all Seasons to find out more about the team.

After completing his work experience with the Eden Project working on displays of vegetables, ornamentals, fruit and crops, Luke decided to study a two year National Diploma in Horticulture at Duchy college. It was during his time at college that Luke began his aspirations to start his own business, and the concept of Man for all Seasons was born. Aged just 17, Luke began to pick up work from customers at Plymouth Garden Centre, where he had a part-time job.

In the early days, I remember setting up the business and deciding what I would charge. I charged £9-£10 an hour to begin with, and remember my mum saying ‘people aren’t going to pay that Luke’. Within a couple of months I was absolutely fully booked.

From there it hasn’t all been plain sailing, with the business facing a setback when Luke broke his ankle during the early stages of trading. Unable to work, Luke faced 7

The solution, Luke found, was to call in his Dad Mark; “I remember hopping along on my crutches trying to teach him how to use a lawn mower and strimmer and having a plastic bag over my cast to keep it from getting wet and dirty”. Since then, Man for all Seasons has become somewhat of a family affair, with Mark quitting his job as a taxi driver and becoming a full time gardener, and mum answering the phone for messages. The Man for all Seasons team also includes a labourer and head gardener, as well as a range of subcontractors to lend a hand on bigger jobs.

Luke and his team provide the complete service, including everything from a regular grass cutting service to complete garden design projects.

Luke tells us about his decision to rebrand in 2015. “People recognise the brand now and recognise that it’s something that’s been done properly - it shows I’m serious about what I’m doing.” “We cover grounds, gardens and landscaping; anything in the garden for people who actually like their gardens!” Spanning such a wide range of garden projects, the team are no strangers to a challenge, and a year ago they took on their most complex job to date. With the task of planting 6 Photinia trees, both the team and the client were shocked by the sheer size of the plants when they arrived; “they arrived on a lorry, two guys had rolled them off and they had bounced and dented the tarmac.” After considering many options to get the 3/4 tonne trees into the back garden and planted, a crane was hired for the day as the

14 March 2018

Call OM Magazine 01752 691007

most feasible option; lifting all 6 trees, a mini digger and 6 bags of top soil over the entire house. The team proudly finished in just a day. “It was nuts!” Luke admits. The business also takes on the challenge of large commercial scale gardening projects. As their biggest site, Man for all Seasons is kept busy with their Millfields contracts. The team is involved with not only maintenance but also review meetings and regular contact with the management, ensuring they’re not just contractors that come in to do the job and then go again.

“It wasn’t the coolest thing in the world for a 13 year old to be doing” he tells us, but Luke’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed; his work one the allotments earnt him the South West in Bloom Youth Award in 2005, while he was still at secondary school.

weeks in a cast with lots of customers he didn’t want to let down.

L

uke may not had known at the time how much of an impact convincing his parents to rent him an allotment would have, but he’s now sure that his time being one of the youngest allotment holders in the country made him realise he wanted to get into gardening.

Valuing a relationship with the client, the team choose not to class themselves as contractors no matter the site size, instead sticking with the title of gardeners.

“There are loads of gardeners in Plymouth - if you look in the yellow pages there are hundreds of them - but there aren’t many people who really know their plants and what they’re doing.” Offering high end horticulture is something

www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

MAN FOR ALL SEASONS PLYMOUTH GARDEN MACHINERY Luke is passionate about, as plant and pruning knowledge can take a lot of studying. Luke began to expand Man for all Seasons’ services to garden design in June last year, after completing a HND in Garden and Landscape Design at Cornwall College.

Man for all Seasons also offer a bespoke 3D model for each client, allowing them to put themselves in the garden, walk around, zoom in on aspects and see what it will look like from their neighbours driveway for example.

The Man for all Seasons team also discuss maintenance with the client during the design process. “It’s great to build these fantastic gardens and the client’s intentions are always there to maintain it themselves, but if there’s a plan in place or quarterly review of how they’re doing this ensures the longevity of the garden” Luke tells us.

Garden Design in Saltash

“You can quite easily step outside your back door and think you know straight away what you want, be it a patio or a deck. I’ve had that many times – but my job as a garden designer is to work with the client and find the best possible solution for their garden, taking into consideration everything they want.” Showcasing his work, Luke tells us he’s proudest of a garden design that can be found in Saltash. “It’s the best garden I’ve built so far from a creativity point of view. Yes there were some complications along the way but in the end we delivered a completed garden to our clients that ticked every box for them.” Looking ahead, Man for all Seasons has three projects in the pipeline, and is working with Luke’s old tutor from his design course, Matt James, to design some exciting new gardens. Luke is also expanding his business into a brand new Man for all Seasons unit, which he got the keys for just last month. “I’ve got stuff in storage all over Plymouth at the moment - a cement mixer, rotovator - bits and pieces everywhere!” As predominantly a store for his equipment including bigger tools like his ride on mower, Luke is looking forward to

Planting Beds at The Millfields

having a base and sees the space doubling up as a workshop for more bespoke pieces further down the line. Man for all Seasons seems to have an exciting time ahead, as when we ask Luke where he sees his business in the future he has some big plans. While the business looks to still maintain gardens big and small, Luke himself wants to focus more on design work and project management possibly across the country. In order to do this, Luke tells us how he’s looking for new staff members with the right skills and expertise.

Open to projects with a budget of £5,000 - £25,000, Luke values constant meetings with the client to throw ideas around and create a brief and concept that works to suit each individual. And it doesn’t have to be a complete garden re-design; “if they’ve got a garden that’s already quite well established, it could be just some smaller changes that are needed” Luke reassures us.

With bigger budgets you can be more creative; you can start looking at more bespoke products instead of picking up a catalogue.

Luke also tells us he wants to go back to studying within the next few years; brushing up on his skills and confidence in planting design as a single module. Finally, Luke has aspirations for a Man for all Seasons show garden at either Hampton Court or Chelsea over the coming years.

OM RECOMMENDS: China Fleet Country Club

C

hina Fleet Country Club is a hotel, golf and health club set in 180 acres of stunning countryside on the banks of the River Tamar in Saltash. Having recently completed a £1.5 million refurbishment including the addition of a brand new Aqua Spa- they have been awarded a four star rating by the AA. Our Editor, Libbi Chapple and Account Manager Emily Trace- were lucky enough to be invited to review the prestigious facilities. Located a short 15 minute drive from Plymouth, China Fleet is a hidden Gem that boasts natural beauty. On the drive there you have the river Tamar to your right, and the 18 hole parkland golf course to your left. We parked the car, (finished our breakfast pancakes!) and made our way to the Barn Spa for our mini treatments. Libbi’s Experience: Neither of us had ever had a spa treatment before- so we were

excited for what was to come. I chose the mini manicure treatment- which was carried out by one of the friendly Barn Spa Beauticians, Victoria. Using the global salon brand, OPI- I was spoilt for choice when it came to choosing a colour! Having very short nails from a young age and recently managing to grow them out- this was a real treat. Victoria filed and neatened my cuticles, then massaged my hands with the OPI ProSpa protective hand, nail and cuticle cream. It smelt amazing! I went for a neutral colour- and after the treatment was finished, we were offered a drink in the Brasserie to let my nails dry before the spa. Emily’s Experience: From the selection of mini treatments offered, I opted for the Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage; a 25 minute mini-treatment which helps to ease stress, boost circulation and soothe sore joints and muscles. On entering the Barn Spa, a characteristic and impressive 18th Century converted Cow Shed; I was greeted by Massage Therapist, Megan, and directed upstairs. The treatment room itself had a tranquil atmosphere; with the aroma of essential oils diffusing the room, dimmed lighting and soft classical music in the background. With this being my first massage, I was surprised at how quickly I could unwind. Megan explained that my shoulders were tight, likely due to hunching over my computer desk five days a week – which could also be the source of the aggravating tension headaches I’d been experiencing. Regular massage every 6-8 weeks can help alleviate this by relaxing and loosening the muscles strained by incorrect posture.

By the end I left de-stressed, relaxed and more than tempted to re-book.

After our mini treatments, we made our way to the changing rooms to get ready for the Aqua Spa. Our fluffy white robes, towels and slippers were a welcome addition

and really made the experience feel like something special. We spent the best part of 2 hours in the Aqua Spa- and felt completely relaxed the entire time. The Finnish sauna was our personal favourite- and we alternated this between the experience showers and the ice chute.

It may seem strange to want to rub crushed ice over your body, but after 10 minutes in the sauna it was extremely refreshing!

The Tepidarium loungers added a certain sense of luxury to the Aqua Spaheated ceramic loungers, perfect for relaxing with a book or a cheeky nap. We thought we had better take a dip in the pool and get our hearts racing after all that lazing around- so we took to the lanes and did a few lengths before our lunch in the Brasserie.

Located at the front of the building on a glass fronted balcony, The Brasserie is light and airy and perfect for looking out over the grounds. Overall, Emily and I had a perfect day at China Fleet- we left feeling relaxed and ready for an afternoon nap! China Fleet has something for everyone- whether you want to become a regular with one of their membership options, or fancy a pamper weekend away.

Easy Hot Cross Buns

There is nothing better at Easter time than curling up with a cup of tea and a homemade hot cross bun after work or perhaps with family.

Ingredients • • • • •

Prep: 15 mins

240 ml greek yoghurt 130g Self Raising Flour 70g currants 1 tsp caster sugar good shake of mixed spice

Method 1.

Preheat the oven to 190C. Add all the ingredients into a bowl and gently mix with a spoon. It can be quite sticky so add a little more flour in small doses until you have a nice soft dough.

Brush the top fo the buns with maple syrup. Mix 2 teaspoons of flour with a few drops of water and add to a piping bag. Pipe the corsses on to the bun tops.

4.

Bake in pre-heated oven for 10-12 mins or until golden. Best enjoyed warm!

Local businessman prepares to run the toughest footrace in the World in aid of St Luke’s Hospice

J

amie Shewbrook; owner of Westcountry Tile and Bathroom located in Christian Mill Business Park, is preparing to undertake his toughest challenge to date. In the words of the Discovery Channel, it’s the ‘toughest footrace in the world’. The Marathon Des Sables is a self sufficient 7 day ultra marathon through the Sahara Desert in Morocco; the world’s largest desert and one of the harshest environments on the planet. Jamie is hoping to raise £15,000 in aid of St Luke’s Hospice. Running a successful business may be time consuming enough for some people. Jamie not only balances a busy work and home life, but he also finds the time to compete in a number of fundraised events every single year to raise money for charity. Jamie’s experience knows no bounds, after previously Scaling the Great Wall of China in 2000, completing Mount Kilimanjaro in 2003, climbing Machu Picchu, crossing the Arctic on Husky dogs, cycling John O Groats to Lands End incorporating the three highest peaks and the three largest Lakes and most recently; a 250 mile cycle across Costa Rica in 2016. “I have fundraised for many charities over the years including Pearn Residential Home, NCH the Children’s Charity, St Luke’s Hospice and Prostate Cancer”. Jamie has a personal connection to St Luke’s after losing a number of close friends and seeing the incredible work that the charity offers. St Luke’s Hospice provides vital care to patients for a calm and peaceful onward journey to the next life. It costs more than £5m per year to run the Hospice and only 30% comes from the government leaving more than £3.5m to be raised by donations and the help from volunteers. Jamie’s latest challenge, and no doubt his most ambitious to date; is to complete the infamous Marathon Des Sables, or MDS for short. A six stage ‘Ultra marathon’- MDS is a truly gruelling multi-stage adventure through a mythical landscape in one of the world’s most inhospitable environments. Marathon Des Sables covers 6 stages over 7 days, with each participant running a total of 156 miles in up to 60 degrees of gruelling desert heat.

20 March 2018

“The marathon Des Sables is something that I’ve always wanted to do. Everyone I’ve spoken to that knows of it has said it changes you for life. People have come back, tend to look at life differently, perhaps appreciate things a little more”.

Jamie is hoping to raise £15,000 in aid of St Lukes Hospice by taking part in the Marathon Des Sables in April 2018. You can sponsor him by searching for ‘Jamie Shewbrook’ on Just Giving or by calling 01752 770077.

Jamie tells us that he has no problem when it comes to determination and motivation. “The two reservations I have are food and heat. Bugs, spiders, scorpions are all fine. But running in 50-60 degree heat- I’ve never done anything like that before”. “We will have to overcome sand storms, de-hydration, hunger, extreme fatigue, mental barriers, desert wildlife and our perceptions of our own capabilities to complete this race”. What makes the MDS perhaps even more gruelling than the fact it’s in the Sahara Desert? Jamie explains that you have to run with enough supplies to last you the entire 7 days.

Training Camp in Le Santa

“You have to carry all your own kit including, rucksack, food, sleeping bag, mattress, first aid kit, cleaning materials and anti venom pump - you’ll be eating about 2000-2300 calories of food a day so you’ll be deficient from day one but you have to choose; less food meaning less weight to carry, or more food which can potentially slow you down”. Jamie has recently returned from a Marathon Des Sables specific multi Day training camp in Lanzarote called La Santa, learning from previous MDS runners such as Tom Evans- who placed 3rd in 2017’s event. “We ran ten times over the seven days in challenging conditions.

The group ran 10 times in 7 days

Training on Volcanic rock and sand with weighted packs to try and prepare as best we can”. Jamie tells us that Ben Annis from the college of Marks and St John’s has kindly offered the use of their Heat Chamber for heat acclimatisation training in preparation for the Sahara. Before you enter the MDS you have to have comprehensive checks by a Doctor to ensure you are in a fit state to compete, and every participant has to have an ECG. Jamie explains that it is also recommended you take out a specific type of insurance especially for events such as MDS.

In the

Running Do it for charity, for fun or for yourself. Run - It’s liberating! But, firstly it’s important to know the do’s and don’t about this individual sport. Louise Hobbs goes in search of the secret to enjoyment in running.

S

tories of people shedding five stone, raising thousands of pounds for charity, even people brought back from the brink of suicide have amazed me, in my quest to discover the benefits of running. Why is running such a popular way to keep fit? Obvious factors would be the weight-loss and fitness benefits, which are quickly reaped from running, but there are also impressive psychological gains to be made. It is now a recommended sport for people who suffer from clinical depression and can also help people battling with addictions by releasing ‘feel-good’ brain chemicals called endorphins. Sufferers report feelings of empowerment and ability to focus when they run, allowing them to be alone without pressures.

A Weighty Decision?

Most people begin running to lose a few pounds as it turns your body into a calorie burning furnace! Combined with healthy eating, jogging is an efficient way to get into shape with the added bonus of physical fitness thrown in. Getting the best results in the shortest time will mean jogging little and often,

Running regularly can enable you to beat stress and improves clarity of mind it will be a slow process if you are only willing to go once a week. But, bear in mind that you can run anywhere at anytime, why not take your trainers to work with you and run in your lunch hour, replace driving to the shops with running or make a day of it and go out somewhere picturesque where you can enjoy beautiful scenery. That’s the beauty of running it’s versatile and it’s free! It is important for beginners to start slowly and cautiously and not expect too much too soon. Going it alone means you will be your own mentor and remembering to take these steps before and after

running is essential for your own wellbeing;

Warm Ups Jog slowly around to warm up and get the blood flowing to your muscles. Remember; don’t stretch before you run.

Post Run Sip your drinks. Guzzling too much water too quickly can flood your body. Stretch all your muscle groups for 15 to 20 minutes afterwards. This is important for your muscles to cool down and for your heart rate to return to normal. Continue to re-hydrate your body over the next 24 to 48 hours. Purchasing correct fitting, comfortable running shoes is a must for everyone, if only for the fact that sore feet make running become a painful and unpleasant experience. Shoe specialist Graham Richardson explained to me some of the fundamentals about finding the best shoes for you. “For a beginner I make sure that the shoes are as snug as possible so the

person will want to keep going, for the runner who is a bit more established we can look at taking pressure away from certain areas of the body to help keep your running style as efficient as possible for longer. Hopefully making your running more enjoyable,” With over 20 years experience in the running industry Graham is extremely knowledgeable and is an expert in footwear. Visited by ‘wannabe’ runners frequently, I asked him how he encourages fresh faces to take up the sport “I would always say; be sensible in how you approach this new adventure, is there someone you know who also might want to do this? It is great to have a partner to share your ups and downs with. The biggest hurdle is your own mind and getting past the fear of people seeing you if you are not the Amazonian goddess type female. Once you get past this you can progress quite quickly, but again, sensibly.” Incentives which may entice some of us to take to our feet are endless: • Stress relief • Sense of achievement (work towards goals) • Improved health • Weight-loss • Mental and emotional strength

race (initially!) and well fitting trainers are paramount.

Clarity of mind Raise money for charity To enjoy time alone Meet new people Boost self-esteem

It is understandable that people feel they can reach new heights when running, nurturing emotions and dealing with dilemma’s as they go. The only few things to remember are that it’s not a

Remarkably, finding out about running has completely changed my view. Bad memories of plodding along red-faced and gasping for breath have been replaced by a genuine desire to begin a training programme and what’s even more astonishing is that losing weight and getting fit are merely the beginning.

Carrot and Ginger Soup Give your immune system a boost before the warm weather, with this low-fat warming soup.

Prep: 5 mins

3 large carrots 1 tbsp grated ginger a pinch of cayenne pepper 1 tsp turmeric 200ml vegetable stock 20g wholemeal bread 1 tbsp soured cream

Method 1.

Peel and chop the carrots. The smaller the better as big chunks will be hard to blend.

2. Add all the ingredients together in a blender with the carrots and blitz until smooth.

Once smooth, pour into a saucepan and heat until piping hot.

BUSINESS PROFILE Now in their 9th year of ownership since taking over the business in 2009, Halo Hairdressing located in Crownhill Village, is going from strength to strength. We catch up with Julie Wotton and Sarah Jury, to see what’s changed since we spoke last year.

When we last caught up with the pair, the salon had just undergone a complete refit. Everything but the wooden floor was renewed, and the team are still as proud today as they were two years ago. “It feels so much better, we now have an environment we are proud of and absolutely love working in” Sarah tells us. “It looked okay before, but once the refit was done, it made us realise just how tired it was”. Together, the professional team of seven has over 100 years combined experience, five of which are the ‘original Snips Girls’ from when Julie was manageress of the Co-op owned salon. Sarah explains that she feels very lucky to have a great bunch of girls who work so well together. Halo have a new apprentice named Jasmine, who is currently in her 3 month probation period. Having started her college course back in September, Jasmine has a good grasp on the basics of hairdressing, and Julie tells us that the

team are keen to share their knowledge with her. “We are all full of passion here so she is beaming. Its nice having someone new coming into the industry as they are so keen to learn. the younger generation have a different outlook, so can sometimes bring different ideas”. Julie feels very passionate about bringing new trainees into the industry, and tells us that the apprenticeship scheme has recently been restructured for the better. The new scheme means that the focus has shifted from the importance of being on trend, to ensuring that the customer service is above and beyond.

J

ulie Wotton and Sarah Jury work very well together as partners, owing to their many years of combined hairdressing experience and close friendship. With a total of 44 years experience between them, and a close knit team of seven running Halo, it’s no wonder they have such a loyal clientele.

It is important to be on trend and in with the latest fashion of course, but at the end of the day it comes down to core basic values. Make sure that you treat the client exactly the same on their 5th or 6th visit, as you did on their 1st, and ensure it stays that way.

“Right through from consultation to the products you are recommending for aftercare - and all the bits in between, you need to be thinking of and interacting with the client” Says Julie. “Talk about their lifestyle, talk about how they manage their hair, do they use any products currently, talk about what you’re

Julie Wotton and Sarah Jury

doing as you style their hair and why you’re doing it, getting out the shade chart and holding it against their skin tone… Talk to the client, and listen to their needs!” Julie explains that it could be so easy to get complacent in a job and that it’s important to ensure this doesn’t happen. “We don’t mix up a regular clients colour before they step through the door because that’s what they always have. Today might be the day they want a complete change, and you only find that out by the initial consultation- by talking to them. Communication is my favourite word and it’s not just important to use in hairdressing, it needs to be used better everywhere”. Going back to the apprenticeship structure, Julie tells us that apprenticeships have been reviewed by City and Guilds. It has now gone from a unit based practical and theory alone, to this, plus end point assesments. “There is now a lot more emphasis on values, behaviours and consultation. so it instils the importance of talking to the clients in their basic haidressing knowledge”. Because of this change, Julie predicts that it will make the course more challenging, and as a result there will be a higher standard of trainee hairdressers coming through.

- HALO HAIRDRESSING

The global leader in cosmetics, L’Oreal holds an excellent relationship with the salon as they know that the staff are very proactive, therefore they are regularly provided with in-salon training so every stylist is fully trained and up to date with all the latest trends, products, knowledge and techniques. Sarah tells us that the staff are spoilt for choice when it comes to products they can use on their clients, depending on the desired results. Ranging from Majirel by L’Oreal, which is a permanent colour, to Diacolor which gradually fades to a more natural finish, with no regrowth. Halo also use L’Oreal’s Inoa, which is oil based and ammonia free, another choice for anyone with allergies. Sarah stresses the importance of a skin test before any changes to your hair to ensure no reactions to the products takes place. “We retail only quality hair care and

styling brands that we are proud to use ourselves in the salon, to ensure that the salon feeling is continued at home. So if you’re looking for L’Oreal or Goldwell products in Plymouth we stock a wide range of their top lines including L’Oreal Serie Expert and Goldwell Dualsenses”. Halo are always looking to attract new clients, and are perhaps one of the few salons in the city who regularly send out ongoing promotions. Having had a leaflet designed by Tom, our graphic designer here at OM- the salon has seen an influx of business based off of their funny faces! “People still comment on those photos. I think it’s because it makes us seem more relatable before the client meets us. It’s broken down that barrier”. Halo offer ongoing discounts for clients who sign up to their mailing list- with a 20% voucher when you join. You can also visit their website for promotions and offers to print out at home.

For years, Halo has continued to stock professional L’Oreal, Goldwell and GHD products, and they haven’t strayed from this since before Halo was establishedeven though numerous brands have tried to sway them!

As Halo is a popular family salon, every member of the team is an expert in treating clients of every age, and the salon welcomes ladies, gents and children.

Julie Wotton juggles her work and home life well- with lots of Prosecco she might add! Julie is part of the PTA for Elburton Primary School, where three of her children are pupils. Last year she was involved with some exciting events to raise money for the school and this year is no different. “I just like to keep busy. The school and the staff are all so lovely, I just think- why not give a little bit back? It’s a shame that everybody doesn’t think the same”. Julie has helped organise events that have funded brand new tablets for foundation years 1 and 2, and brand new lockers instead of the traditional peg system for personal belongings. Looking to the future, Julie and Sarah both agree that they just want to see the salon thrive. Halo will soon be celebrating its 10th year as a business, and Julie and Sarah would love to still be encouraging new clients, as well as looking after their loyal clientele. “I can happily speak for everyone here when I say that we all enjoy coming to work every day. It doesn’t feel like work, it’s a second family. The clients are all so great and we have a lot of fun. Life is too short to be stressed about work!”

Mothers Day 11th March

T

he fourth Sunday of Lent, otherwise known as Mothering Sunday, is a time for celebrating all that our Mums have done for us over the years. A tradition that dates back centuries, the day was originally marked by the reunion of mothers with their children who would otherwise be working as apprentices or domestic servants, with this day being a special holiday for children to take time off and visit their families. With more of us living further away from home and loved ones than ever before, the time we spend with our Mums on Mother’s Day is all the more special, with many people spending more on Mother’s Day gifts and experiences than any other festivity besides Christmas. From 2016, studies have shown that there has been a rise in Mother’s Day shoppers looking for experiences to gift their mothers over physical products, something which has gone down well with Mums across the UK. A meal out, trip away or spa break can make the most of the time you have with your mum on this special day while allowing her to put her feet up and relax. According to Google data, millennial moms are looking forward to a chance to rest, while moms ages 35 and up would love a meal with their family. With this in mind, we thought we’d try and wrap up what Mum’s really want this 11th of March.

Restaurants After Valentine’s Day, the most searches related to restaurant reservations happen most often on Mother’s Day, with 55.9% of people planning to purchase a dinner

in 2017. Whether you choose to spend the day together and take your mum for lunch, or you can spare the evening for a sophisticated dinner, there are plenty of offers across Plymouth to make use of and make your mum feel special.

Hotels 20% of UK moms would like a lie in as a gift, so how about a hotel lie in with a fancy breakfast to wake up to? If you’re not a culinary master when it comes to breakfast, look no further than a hotel to do it for you. Whether it’s a trip away to their favourite location, a new town to explore, or even a simple stay in a venue closer to home, celebrate the special day by treating your mum this March.

Experience Days These days searching for gifts begins online for most of us. With searches for ‘unique’ mother’s day gifts up 1.6%, it is no surprise that experience days come out on top. With so much on offer, it is likely you’ll be able to find a day’s fun for your mum, no matter what she’s into. Often perfect for the sporty or active mum, these experiences are idela for those mums who may not rush to a pamper day but prefer to get stuck into an activity. There is nothing more unique than trying something new together.

Spa Days

Unique Gifts

What better way to help Mom relax than a day at the spa? That seems to be the general thinking, as the most searches for spa days happen around Mother’s Day. A full day of pampering can help your mum unwind, and give you the chance to spend some quality time together. There are some fantastic venues on offer nearby, with many offering everything from food to facials. Why not take a look at our review of China Fleet Country Club for some inspiration?

If you’d rather give a physical gift this year, try something sentimental and personalised. This has been the general growing trend in Mother’s Day gifting since 2012, but you don’t have to handmake a gift for it to be unique. Instead, head over to the range of online sites which offer a great selection of presents you can add photos and messages to. You’re mum will no doubt cherish these for a long time.

BUSINESS PROFILE KenmareHR is a Plymouth based Human Resources consultancy, created by Paul Kennelly to help local businesses with any aspects of employment support required. We meet with Paul to learn a little more about the ins and outs of HR, his background and how his business is doing as it enters its second year in operation.

Paul was the trainer for all new HR managers in the southwest helping them prepare for appointment and then acting as their mentor as they developed. After being appointed as HR Business Partner Paul was responsible for all people related responsibilities across 17 stores; with Store Managers, HR Managers, and over 6300 employees to look after and manage. His role included responsibility for and managing all parts of the employee journey from recruitment onwards, managing significant technical and organisational change projects, overseeing employee welfare and training, leadership development, a wage budget of £1m per week and case management of all serious disciplinary and employee relations cases.

The fundamental overriding principal is to follow the truth, ensure a fair investigation and process is completed and treat everyone involved respectfully. Paul has also been responsible for some large-scale HR related projects including Company start-ups, TUPE’s, redundancies and company restructures that involve a lot of change for people. “The key to successfully managing a large project is communication, engagement. You have to gain the trust of the people you are working with.”

Whilst working as a HR Manager, Paul completed a Masters Degree in Human Resources at Plymouth University on days off, evenings and weekends, and gained his Chartered status within the HR profession.

So then, Paul decided to focus on gaining professional recognition of his experience completing a master’s degree in Human Resources at Plymouth University and gaining MCIPD Chartered status. “Studying for a masters degree, working and balancing family life is certainly no easy task. My wife and children were very understanding!”.

During his time, Paul has dealt with a wide Paul is a keen Luthier in his spare time, crafting guitars from scratch

Fast forward to February 2015Paul is in training for an Ironman Triathlon, when he takes a fall on his bike and breaks his collarbone in four places. Ultimately resulting in time off work- Paul utilised his recovery time and built a website demonstrating his HR expertise, “I’d had a plate fitted and a bone graft from my hip so it was a lot of fun trying to type!” “The work started coming in – only small jobs at first! I worked

on my days off and in the evenings.” In February last year, Paul was made redundant. “The writing was on the wall really. The supermarket sector was and still is under a lot of pressure to reduce costs. Paul left his role in February and decided to work full time on the business. “It’s been a busy first year and I have enjoyed it immensely and met lots of great company owners and employees.”

Paul tells us that at first it was the classic case of not really knowing what direction to go in and then finding the job that fitted his personality and skills. “I made my way up the ladder so to speak, so I really know how to work with and manage people within a business at all levels”. After senior management Paul chose to put those skills to a new challenge and so made the move to HR. “In my first role, I was responsible for over 350 employees”.

range of issues- from standard disciplinary situations to some very serious issues within companies. “I have dealt with all manner of issues at all levels within companies ranging from inappropriate use of social media, stealing, collusion, financial misconduct, bullying and harassment, drugs and vexatious claims and worse. Regretfully people can be very creative and there is not a lot that I have not come across and had to deal with.

P

aul Kennelly has over 15 years of senior management experience and 15 years HR Management experience, a Master’s Degree in HR and MCIPD Chartered accreditation. Having started out as a general assistant for a large supermarket chain, Paul worked his way up the ranks to senior management and area HR management and then eventually to go it alone and start his own business.

KenmareHR is still in its first year of business and Paul has built a solid foundation. KenmareHR has offered their services to a growing number of local businesses in Plymouth and the surrounding areas.

KenmareHR offers an extensive range of services, from an adhoc responsive advice and support service with documentation and letters drafted when needed to a tailored retained HR service allowing company owners to focus on their business. Companies may only need a couple of hours or days support per month or even just someone at the end of a phone and we can provide an experienced costeffective solution. KenmareHR can also draw upon a small

KenmareHR offer assistance with recruitment and selection, contracts, policy documents, training and development, resolving people issues and business development advice.

KenmareHR successfully supported the local trampoline park, Super Tramp, with the full on boarding of 25 employees ahead of their opening day. KenmareHR organised the entire process- and understanding the job role was fundamental. “We hired Plymstock School’s Sports Hall, and invited 90 people to attend over 2 days. We invited them all to the hall and broke the day down into a range of activities”. Paul explains that to ensure the applicants were showcasing the correct skill sets; coaching a game of dodge ball was an interview task! “We had everybody taking part- and each individual had 2 minutes to take charge of the game”. This gave Paul and the Directors at Super Tramp a great indication of which candidates had the relevant skills- and over 25 applicants were chosen in one weekend. “In short, we work hard to find the best approach to recruiting the best people for the client”. We can provide employment contracts, handbooks and employment policies that are specific to a company’s needs. KenmareHR understands that each company operates differently, has different terms, different benefits and different needs and expectations from its employees and we

KenmareHR are there to help develop your business through your best asset: your people

make sure that a solid base is built that means the company and its employees understand the working relationship clearly and can focus on the work and the company. Paul also designs and delivers bespoke management and employee training to companies. Ranging from customer service skills, effective communication, leadership development to managing disciplinary training. Each course is adapted to fit the company. When it comes to keeping up with changes in legislation and regulations- Paul is fully clued up when it comes to the upcoming change in data protection- GDPR. “We can provide guidance and documentation to help companies with GDPR.”

“We can help with recruitment- but we are not a recruitment consultancy! We do much more than that. We will create job descriptions, post job adverts on the relevant platforms across the UK, sift applicants, create interview and assessment methods to ensure the best candidates are selected provide contracts and even complete inductions if needed”.

GDPR is the most significant legislation change in over 10 years- and is intended to strengthen and unify data protection for individuals. GDPR comes into effect on the 25th May and Kenmare HR can offer assistance to local businesses to aid compliance.

“This is the most significant change in legislation in over 10 years. I have gained detailed knowledge and a comprehensive suite of documents to support companies with GDPR.” Paul works in partnership with City College Plymouth to deliver their oneday GDPR course, which is essential for anyone who deals with data handling and

communication in business. Several years ago, in his spare time, Paul had a creative hobby as a Luthier- and trained to hand build acoustic guitars after learning with one of the top handmade guitar workshops in the country. It’s a great way of slowing you down and making you focus. “There is no time for this at the moment but I’ve still have all the kit in the loft- ready for retirement!” Outside of KenmareHR, Paul has been the Race Director at Instinctive Sports Running Club for 10 years. Based in Plympton the club organises a popular 7-mile cross country race each year in aid of St Luke’s Hospice- 250 runners participate and it raises over £1000 each year. “We have a close affinity with St Luke’s and have supported them for many years.” Looking to the future, Paul would like to expand his business and may need to take on an employee himself soon! “At the moment, I call on experienced people when needed for bespoke work” Paul would like to see KenmareHR grow by offering a good value out sourced professional service. “When it comes to managing employees, I like to help build confidence within companies and try and find solutions that are a good fit with the organisation”.

purple day 2018: 26th march

P

urple Day is the international day for epilepsy awareness, and falls on the 26th of March each year. Created in 2008, it was founded by Cassidy Megan, a young girl from Canada with the condition who sought to get people talking about epilepsy. Not only are people from around the world encouraged to get involved to help raise funds, but the day also works to raise awareness and assure people with epilepsy that they are not alone.

The Condition

EPILEPTIC SEIZURE? Remember ACTION: assess Assess the situation – are they in danger of injuring themselves? Remove any nearby objects that could cause injury

CUSHION Cushion their head to protect them from head injury

It is now believed by some researchers that the chance of developing epilepsy is probably always genetic to some extent, with those who start having seizures having always had some level of genetic likelihood to do so. Even if seizures start after a brain injury or other structural change, this may be due to both the structural change and the person’s genetic tendency to have a seizure.

There are 40 different types of seizure, and one person alone can have more than one type. Take a stroll down Memory Lane You don’t have to spend a fortune this Mother’s Day to make it a memorable one. Mum’s love spending time as a family, and how better to celebrate than enjoying the great outdoors together. As March is the first month of Spring, why not get out and about and enjoy the sunshine?

Radford Lake

This peaceful stroll starting at Radford Lake is full of interesting scenery. With shipwrecks, a gate house and diverse woodland, this walk is sure to be a hit with everyone. A fairly easy walk, this proves popular with children who fancy having a go at feeding the ducks on the lake also. A fantastic place for a picnic, why not pull out your picnic rug and stop for a bite to eat with your mum?

Lopwell Dam

A popular spot for families, Lopwell Dam has some fantastic wildlife to discover. At low tide, crossing the tidal ford leads you to the local nature reserve and nearby wildflower and butterfly meadow. The riverside path, open from February until September, allows a stroll along the riverside which could promise sightings of egrets, otters and salmon. With a friendly and informative cafe on site, how better to treat your mum than with a cup of tea and slice of cake? Images courtesy of Glimpses Photography

Tavistock

A bustling town, Tavistock has something for everyone. We recommend taking a stroll along the riverside and through the park, which is particularly popular with kids. As a relatively simple stroll, taking a walk down the high street is a great idea if you’re looking to discover a variety of quirky shops, where you may just find a unique gift this Mother’s Day.
