HOW TO UP THE VALUE OF YOUR PROPERTY

S

pring is said to be the best time of year to start renovating your home. The warmer and dryer weather, longer days and the urge to refresh something in your life. You may love your property now, but if it’s not where you envision yourself staying permanently, you can start making changes now in order to fully maximise the value of your home. It goes without saying that renovating your home can up the value of your property, but what you want to know is the most cost-effective and most efficient way. More people are renovating than ever. According to research from Hiscox, there has been a 400% increase in those deciding to improve and not move, over the past five years.

WHERE TO START... There are many different ways that you can make changes to your home, it’s just finding the right place to start. So if you’re renovating to increase the value of your property, then your reasons will be different from those who are looking to stay in their home for a longer period of time. You need to analyse your reasons and how much money you have for the renovations before you put your plans into action.

help to add value to your home if a total renovation is out of your budget.

Your aim is to improve the efficiency of your home to make it appealing to future potential buyers and stand out from other homes in the market. Enhancing the look of your house is important, but ensuring your systems are running efficiently is important for those looking to stay in their home and those looking to attract a buyer’s eyes. Assess your house; hire a licensed home inspector to check your house from top to bottom before deciding where to start. Check where needs improvement: are your appliances’ energy efficient? Or is your plumbing ready for renovation? All these things can not only increase the value of your property but also lead to less cost in running the house.

TIPS FROM LOCAL EXPERTS! According to Jamie Shrewbrook from Westcountry Tile & Bathroom - a local bathroom, tile and wet room specialist: “ Once you have established the plumbing, you need to look at what items work best for the space! Consider recessed light fixtures throughout your ceiling to brighten up the room. Include one or two in your shower.”

“Do you have the space for a cabinet? Recessed cabinets are often a great way to save a few inches of space over a shallow vanity, and the additional framing typically isn’t going to break the budget.”

According to the National Association of Realtors, there are three key home improvement areas: the kitchen, the bathroom, and the exterior. Even starting off small can be very effective: painting the house both inside and out, replacing the flooring, re-landscaping the front and back gardens - even tasks like these can

Home FINDING THE RIGHT CONTRACTOR Enhancing your home will not only be a great way to update and refresh your living space, but home renovations can also lead to a greater profit and increase the value of your property; but only if they’re done professionally by quality home renovators. So how do you choose the right one? It may be tempting to carry out certain renovations by yourself, but hiring a professional is the sure fire way to a successful outcome that will increase the value in your property, and that’s not something you want to risk.

The most important thing is to do your research. You need to be properly informed before making any rash decisions. Go online and research local home remodeling contractors and read their online reviews. Shortlist the contractors that you’re interested in and confirm that they’re fully licensed and insured. Interview your potential contractors, check references, review previous work and testimonials and pay attention to how

they treat their subcontractors - ensure you’re finding out all the information you need before trusting someone with your home renovations.

Hiring an unlicensed contractor can lead to bad work, permitting issues, code violations, and financial liability for injuries or accidents. Ashley Ward from Swaye Electrical - a domestic, residential, commercial and industrial electrical service based in Plymouth - explain that “any home

renovation must start with planning. Whether it is deciding the colours of the walls or the style of the sockets and switches, productive planning is key to a successful renovation. Having professional and experienced tradespeople is a must and before any renovations take place.”

Make sure to go with your gut feeling and hire the person who is going to increase and not decrease the value of your home. CONTINUE READING

Home HOW TO ADD THE MOST VALUE TO YOUR HOME It’s integral to have a plan before renovating - as we’ve already established - but there are certain renovations that will add more value to your home than others. Make sure to find out how much your property is currently worth and how you can maximise its assets. Here are some suggestions on how you can renovate your house and add potential value to the current value:

1. ADD MORE ROOMS In many cases, it’s much more costeffective to turn a two-bedroom house into a three-bedroom house than it is the invest in a new property with an extra bedroom. You can do this by reconfiguring the floor plan or add more living space with an extension or a conversion. Wayne Egan of Plymouth Home Improvements - family run customer friendly business - says: “Adding extra room to your home can be very be official so an extention or loft/garage conversion is a brilliant way of enhancing your living arrangements while increasing the value of your home.”

WHY RENOVATE NOW? • Spring kicks off the busiest home-buying season in most areas. If you are selling your home, having your renovations completed in early spring means your home will be ready when buyers are shopping. • Increase the efficiency of your home; not only do you want it to be able to function better, you want to increase the comfort and enjoyment of your home. • Spring is the best time to renovate for homeowners as it will be the time of year that they will get tax refunds so have more money to invest in home improvements.

2. ADD A PARKING SPACE According to the Department for Transport’s Statistical Release, in 2014, 29.6 million cars were registered for use in the UK, which is a 9% increase on the previous year; so it will definitely be a good selling point from a buyers’ perspective! Block paving your path can really increase the curb value and make your driveway look very smart. Wayne Egan of Plymouth Block Paving knows this too

well: “Block paving will greatly enhance almost every type of house. Most new Installations involve extending the parking available adding valuable parking space and value!”

3. UTILISE YOUR GARDEN SPACE Making your garden feel like another living space can add a lot of value to your property, especially if it’s something you currently neglect. Never forget curb appeal, sprucing up your garden space can really make an impactful first impression.

If you want your garden to stand out but know that keeping up with maintaining it will be very time consuming, Wayne Egan of Plymouth Artifical Grass knows the trick: “The current trend for garden makeovers is very much on low Maintenance. Artificial grass can greatly reduce maintenance and enhance the look of any garden with a natural look! No mowing no mud no hassle!”

4. ECO-FRIENDLY Making your home more environmentally friendly with the likes of solar panels, wind turbines, and good insulation can increase its value. If your home is cheaper to run, it will stand out in the property market and you can usually add a premium to the price. Ashley Ward knows the best way to manage the energy in your home:

“An efficient home is a happy home. It doesn’t take a lot to increase the efficiency of your home or office.” “It could be as simple as replacing existing halogen lamps with LED lamps. This could help you save up to 90% in electricity on just your lighting alone, which would decrease your energy bill drastically.”

TIPS FROM LOCAL EXPERTS!

5. CHANGE UP YOUR BATHROOM The style of your bathroom can increase the value of your home massively, it’s just finding the right renovations to carry out. Jame Shrewbrook has some suggestions if you’re unsure where to start: “Wall-hung toilets no longer break the bank, and they also save space since the tank is hidden behind the wall. Tiles on the floor or wall: you can either go for large format or smaller tiles, such as mosaics on the floor in a wet room.” There are a lot of things that are easy to forget about, Ben Hinchliffe of Base Concepts - a Plymouth based company who specialise in the refurbishment of both commercial and domestic properties - advises to remember the following things: “Will you require planning, local authority approval, or structural designs? Will it add value to your property compared to value of your property? A lot of the above have additional costs which people don’t often think about.”

All properties have a ceiling price and you can’t have an asking price that’s much higher than other properties on your street.

PLYMOUTH BLOCK PAVING

Blinds are easy to forget, but they really tie a room together. Mark Higgins from Beacon Blinds - a reputable blinds manufacturers based in Plymouth - says: “Luxaflex and Eclipse Blind systems are ideal for home renovation as they have WAYS TO RENOVATE unique solutions to fit every type of window & situation. They are also of high quality and so made to last, giving the best value for money.”

“It is very important to consider blinds as they help to complete the room with the right finishing touch.”

T

here are many things that people associate with spring: whether that be warmer weather, daylight savings time, flowers, the dread of pollen and hayfever! I’ve always associated spring with the feeling of freshness and being energised; which is why this time of year is the perfect time to do a thorough Spring Clean! I know not everyone has the desire to clean their home in the spring, but many see this time of year as the perfect opportunity to prepare a nice tidy home in anticipation for the summer ahead, and a clean home will make for a happy homeowner! Here are our tips on how to get your house feeling lemony fresh this spring!

1. Make a Spring Cleaning List There’s no better way to start a spring clean than getting a clear idea of where to start. Think of how you want to begin; do you want to prioritise the big jobs first? Or do you want to start with the smaller jobs that can be done a bit quicker? Regardless of where you start, if you have a plan for what you want to do, you have a clear goal of how you want to carry out your spring cleaning tasks.

3. Remove pet hairs with rubber gloves Pet owners know more than anyone that pet hair clings like no other! Take a pair of rubber gloves, slightly dampen them and run your hand over surfaces to attract hair. This will also work with a slightly damp sponge too. Simply rinse off the glove or sponge when it’s covered in hair and repeat as needed.

4. Clean out your fridge This is a job that isn’t done as often as it should be, but this is the perfect time to do it. Empty your shelves and remove them from their slots and give them all a wipe down. Use a toothbrush to get into the niggly parts that are harder to reach. Take a lemon and cut it in half, place each half on the top and bottom shelf of your fridge. The lemon will naturally absorb any odours and leave your fridge feeling lemony fresh.

5. Baking Soda will be your saving grace! Baking soda is very versatile and can cause dirt and grease to dissolve easily in water. It’s a safe and effective cleaner for glass, chrome, steel, enamel and plastic. It’s safe to use around children and pets and is ideal for cleaning food preparation surfaces.

6. Use a lemon to clean your microwave Cut a lemon into halves, squeeze the juice into 1/2 cup of water and drop the rinds into the mixture. Microwave for three minutes and let it stand for five minutes without opening the door. The trapped steam will loosen the grime, so you can wipe the microwave clean with less elbow grease.

2. Declutter Do you have something in your home that hasn’t seen the light of day in quite some time? Get rid of it! Rule of thumb, if you haven’t used something in that last six months, then you should definitely consider throwing it away. Organise your personal items into ‘keep’, ‘donate’, or ‘throw away’ sections and make sure to have these clearly labelled to avoid throwing something out by mistake.

NATIONAL PET MONTH A

pril is National Pet Month. The annual event is celebrated from April 1st until 6th May and aims to raise awareness of responsible pet ownership through educational campaigns. National Pet Month is a registered charity that is unique in bringing together animal welfare charities, professional bodies, pet businesses, schools, youth groups and pet lovers. The trustees are the National Office of Animal Health (NOAH) and Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA). The key aims of the charity are to: promote responsible pet ownership, make people aware of the mutual benefits of living with pets, to increase public awareness of the role of pet care specialists, and the raise awareness of the value of working and assistance companion animals.

National Pet Month is celebrating its 30th year in 2019 and you are invited to take part! Thousands of people up and down the UK will be celebrating life with their pets by spreading the word on responsible pet ownership and by raising money for their favourite UK pet charities in fun-filled events. Owning a pet is a privilege and should result in a mutually beneficial relationship. All pet owners have a legal responsibility to help protect the welfare of animals. There are many different ways that you can be a responsible pet owner.

Responsible Pet Ownership The British Veterinary Association’s spring 2015 Voice of the Veterinary Profession survey found that UK companion animal and exotic animal vets regarded irresponsible pet ownership as one of the most pressing animal welfare issues. Before deciding to own a pet, you need to be ready to commit to your pet for its entire life; you need to make sure you’re financially able to look after a pet, and you need to select a pet that is suitable for your home and lifestyle.

Adopt, Don’t Shop!

Pets require time and care. Although it’s important to recognise that pets are a longterm financial investment, you also need to note the other factors that come with being a responsible pet owner.

The decision to introduce a pet into your life is not one to jump into halfheartedly and no one knows more about the pet you are adopting than the people working at the shelter each day providing care and support for them.

As a pet owner, you will have to ensure your pet is properly trained and socialised so it doesn’t negatively impact other animals and people. Vaccinating your pet to them from what are often fatal infectious diseases. Provide your pet with exercise and mental stimulation appropriate to your pet’s age, breed and health status.

By adopting, not only will you be saving a life and be supporting a charitable institution, you might also find your dream pet which is completely different than the one you first thought you wanted. You also won’t be supporting backyard breeders where the animals are kept in cruel conditions and forced to breed as often as possible.

Being a responsible pet owner is about recognising your pet’s quality of life and making sure every decision you make is one that benefits them.

Don’t rush it - finding the right animal may take time and that’s a good thing!

These days most of us are more than happy to travel to a good restaurant, some are happy to travel far to try a reputable restaurant with a high quality reputation for exquisite taste, good service and welcoming reception, but what if you didn’t have to travel, what if one of the best restaurants from Gloucestershire to Lands end was right here on our door step?

visited Mr Ali we find yet again, Shapla Balti Cuisine has been nominated and shortlisted for the 2018 British Curry Awards!

We visited Mr Ali a year ago as Shapla Balti had been nominated for the very prestigious British Curry Awards. Now one year later since the OM Team last

This is the second time that Mr Ali and his team have been shortlisted for the British Curry Awards and Mr Ali knows it won’t be their last because he has a fantastic team behind him. “It’s big thanks to my chef and my staff; they’re really hard working people. It’s a team effort. Like when you’re playing cricket, football, any team sport, no matter what a good player you are, you need the rest of the team there to win. So I believe it’s a team effort to satisfy the customers and it works. I have a great team behind me who are great to work with.”

Nominations are done anonymously but after building an impressive reputation for himself in the Plympton community, it’s perhaps a bit clearer to see people would choose Mr Ali’s establishment: “The people of Plympton have been very good to us, we’ve been here a while now

Call OM Plymouth Magazine 01752 691007

After being nominated, you are sent an application that you have to fill out to explain why you think you deserve the award. Before the awards ceremony the judges at the British Curry Awards will all make a decision after sending their mystery shopper to investigate: “They will send their mystery shoppers who will come and taste your food, see the service, quality of waiters and how they are presenting themselves. You never know who they are but sometimes you get a feel for it because you get something like three weeks timeframe in October where they will come in. So I will normally work seven days just to make sure I’m here when they come!”

“ 24 April 2019

and we have a nice community here. We’ve seen children come in, grow up and come in with their children!”

Shapla Balti is the only Indian restaurant to be shortlisted for the Best in South West category from Plymouth - and when considering that this category covers everything from Lands End up to Cheltenham, it’s easy to agree what an amazing achievement that is.

The Best in South West category is shortlisted to only eight restaurants. Shapla Balti has come away with a prestigious certificate that states their title of being one of the best in the South West.

Mr Ali’s award collection is growing!

Mr Moshahid Ali

“We found out we were nominated in September time.” Mr Ali tells us, “After that they send you the golden envelope saying “you have been shortlisted”. They will give you a category and then you have to book a table to go. We didn’t win last time, but this time we’re going to do more so we can.”

L

et us introduce to you Mr Moshahid Ali a man who will go above and beyond to create what has been said to be one of the best restaurants and dining experiences in the South West, Shapla Balti Cuisine. As the owner of the business, you can imagine that he has his hands full, but that doesn’t stop him from hosting the best service possible in an establishment that his customers describe as being “the best tasting Indian food in Plymouth”.

With hard work, with determination and if you have the willpower I think we can win. I believe that myself and my staff work hard enough to impress our customers.

Shapla Balti always puts their customers first.

“Everyone who comes through that door we want to make sure that their experience is as comfortable as possible, we just want them to come here from home and be able to relax.”

Shapla Balti offers a wide range of dishes with a different variety of taste from mild, medium, spicy and hot to suit everyone’s palate.

Some of their signature dishes include the Tandoori Garlic Chilli Chicken and the Lamb Chun Chun - which is Mr Ali’s personal favourite! People really enjoy Shapla Balti Cuisine’s food and maybe that’s why they’re always returning for more:

“I believe that we work very hard. We do our best to satisfy our customers and I believe the reviews that our customers have left on Trip Advisor and word of mouth have given us this edge of where we are at the moment.”

Shapla Balti sources their produce both locally and worldwide, so you know you’re getting an authentic Indian dish when you visit this establishment.

The best meal I’ve had in a long time! The staff are so friendly, especially the owner Mr Ali- you are treated like friends from the second you walk in, nothing is too much hassle!

“The food is amazing, especially the naan breads. Mr Ali is more than happy to give knowledgeable recommendations based on your taste, so you feel confident in trying something new. The menu is great and has so much choice. I’ve already made plans to come back again.”

If you’re still not convinced, you can read the rest of their reviews on their Trip Advisor page - but rest assured, there’s definitely a reason that they have been awarded a Certificate of Excellence four years running!

Shapla Balti offers authentic Punjabi, Kashmiri, Bengali and Indian Cuisine from their premises based on the Ridgeway, in Plympton. Mr Ali believes his establishment stands above the rest because of all of the hard work that is put in:

Looking to the future of the business, Mr Ali has no plans to leave Plympton. He loves the area and the people who are part of it.

“I am friends with my customers, we have a great atmosphere here and everybody loves to socialise - that’s what makes this place so special.”

Shapla Balti is open from 5:30-11:30pm 7 days a week, and delivers to the people of Plympton. You may have already found your go-to Indian, but it’s always good to try something different; and going by their recent success, it’s definitely worth a try! Mr Ali really recommends that if you want to visit Shapla Balti, to call up and book!

FOLLOW THE ROAD TO FIND OUT INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT EASTER! Despite its significance as a Christian holy day, many of the traditions and symbols that play a key role in Easter observances actually have roots in pagan celebrations - particularly the pagan goddess Eostre (or Ostara), the ancient Germanic goddess of spring - and in the Jewish holiday of Passover.

The Easter Bunny tradition made its way to the US in the 18th century. It is believed to have originated in Europe where it was actually the Easter Hare. Other Easter traditions include wearing Easter bonnets, making Easter baskets and having Easter egg hunts.

Every child in the UK receives an average of 8.8 Easter eggs every year – double their recommended calorie intake for a whole week.

The UK’s first chocolate egg was produced in 1873 by Fry’s of Bristol. Cadbury produced their first egg in 1875, 2 years after Fry’s, but progress after this was very slow until a method was found of making the liquid chocolate into moulds.

An Easter egg was created called The Real Easter Egg. This Easter egg explains the Christian meaning of Easter. In 2012, 90,000 Real Easter Eggs were sold to churches.

KenmareHR Ltd is a Plymouth based Human Resources consultancy, created by Paul Kennelly to help local businesses with any aspects of employment support required. After meeting with Paul last year to learn a little more about the ins and outs of Kenmare HR; we catch up with him once again to find out how him and his business is doing since we last saw him.

With most work coming from referrals, Paul has had an exceptional year of business. “I’ve worked with a lot of great companies this year, some small, some large; in the last year I’ve worked with around 45 different companies that required some form of HR support in and around the Plymouth area.”

KenmareHR Ltd is a Plymouth based HR consultancy established in 2017 by Paul Kennelly to help businesses with any aspects of HR support they require. The company offers a full range of HR and employee services for local companies, based upon his wealth of experience and a strong unique portfolio of employment and GDPR contractual documentation and material. Paul understands that employees are a company’s greatest resource and knows that it’s important to build a relationship where everyone knows the standards expected and everyone works towards the company’s commercial goals in a productive manner whilst being treated equally and fairly. He tells us how he can help make sure this is implemented into any business: “By establishing an employment relationship with carefully drafted contracts, employment policies or even

Paul Kennelly a bespoke handbook for the company, it means everyone can focus on moving the company forward and concentrate on business. It also provides confidence to company owners when having to resolve any employee related queries or situations.

H

R these days is a necessity for most businesses large or small, especially with ever-changing employment law and the introduction of GDPR. However, most of us can’t afford an employed Human Recourses specialist let alone an HR department. Meet Paul Kennelly MCIPD, now two years into establishing his Plymouth based HR consultancy business, Paul has filled a much-needed gap for many businesses now requiring HR on an ad hoc contractual basis. It’s been a year since we last interviewed Paul, so we caught up with him to find out why Plymouth businesses are preferring to choose KenmareHR Ltd.

Employment contracts and policies need to fit the business needs. They can be tricky things to establish clearly and then require reviewing and updating on a regular basis.

KenmareHR Ltd can assist a company with the development and drafting of bespoke contracts and employment documentation, along with supporting with the consultation process of introducing it into the company. If you need someone to support your HR requirements, Paul is highly recommended: “We have outsourced all our HR and Personnel management to KenmareHR for over 3 years. During that time Paul has assisted us with the complete range of operational matters and some of our more strategic projects. Paul acts with integrity and is always professional, responsive and frequently proposes solutions that are a good fit with our organisation. Over the past 3 years, Paul has become an important and valued member of our team and we would highly recommend him.”

“After working with so many different companies in many different sectors, I bring and share my knowledge and experience, providing best practice ideas and advice that’s always well received by employers and employees alike.

Management skills, coaching and mentoring, the essentials of HR, GDPR, Project Management, Customer Service, and Dignity in the Workplace are just some of the workshops delivered by KenmareHR.

Paul also provides bespoke workshops that support the development of employees in enabling companies to develop and grow their own talent. “I have done a lot of work with City College Plymouth and other large employers over the last year help to deliver a wide range of bespoke development workshops, for local businesses in the Plymouth area. Ranging from GDPR, management skills, coaching and mentoring, soft skills workshops, customer service, handling disciplinaries and even project management to a global company based in the South West.” “This year I have developed and delivered coaching and mentoring training to 300 employees within one of the area’s largest companies, I developed and delivered first line leadership development to another of our largest manufacturing employers. I build the material, so its match fit for the company’s specific needs and then bring it to life with my many years of experience and stories from the

Paul has been a busy man and with 2018 being a very successful year for his company, the future of KenmareHR is looking bright.

The success of the business can partially be credited to the introduction of GDPR last year. Paul became a local expert, reading and re-reading the GDPR regulation clause by clause; creating a full suite of GDPR compliance material and delivering GDPR workshops via City College Plymouth to over 50 companies and supported other companies with data protection issues. Last year he helped a number of companies with data breaches or complex subject access requests. “I also deliver GDPR training on behalf of a government funded organisation that help “start-up” businesses in the South West. I’ve got a full range of GDPR documentation; bespoke privacy statements, GDPR compliant policies, data flow maps; More material and resources than any company or charity would ever need.”

Paul will partake in Ironman and Ride London this year! of France on June 30th, and just over a month later Paul and his wife Michelle will be participating in the 100 mile Ride London cycle event in August whilst raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

KenmareHR has also had a busy year helping various companies with the occasional disciplinary matters, redundancies situations or employee disputes. “I work hard to ensure a fair process is followed that treats everyone involved with respect. We are all people at the end of the day.”

It’s not just KenmareHR that Paul puts a lot of hard work into; he is also preparing and training for Ironman Nice, France, and Ride London. This will be his third attempt at doing an Ironman and he’s raring to get on the start line this time! “With the two previous Ironman’s I’ve entered, I never got to the start line! For the first one I fell off my bike that resulted in a plate in my shoulder and two years to recover. The second was kiboshed by chest infections during the training. So this time I’ve got to get on the start line!” The Ironman will take place in the south

KenmareHR offers a straightforward approach that will help reduce costs for any business. With Paul’s many years of senior HR experience and his understanding of business from his corporate days, he is confident in saying that:

world of work and dealing with people never a dull moment.”

Having a contract that covers all the elements of the employment relationship creates clarity and peace of mind, for both the employer and the employees.

We chose MacMillan because it’s a cancer charity and like everybody I’ve been touched by people that we’ve lost through cancer.

You can support Paul on his Just Giving page here: https://bit.ly/2TKUB4C

So after a year of success since our last visit, things are looking up for KenmareHR. Paul explains that the aim for the company is to continue to reach out to companies that need support. “What I enjoy doing most and what I think companies get best value from is when we build a relationship where I am there when needed, working alongside them as their businesses grows and develop, helping to make employing people that little bit easier and rewarding. I love being the HR guy you can rely on, being there when needed.” If you require any further information about KenmareHR and their services, don’t hesitate to contact Paul on any of the details provided below.

WINSTON CHURCHILL MEMORIAL TRUST The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust runs the Churchill Fellowships, a unique programme of overseas research grants. These support UK citizens from all parts of society to travel the world in search of innovative solutions for today’s most pressing problems.

Soon after Churchill’s death, the people who had worked closely with him launched an appeal across the country which raised approximately £2.5 million in the day’s money (about £40 million in today’s values). This money was invested and that is now the core endowment that the charity operates from to this day. Malcolm Harrison is the Chair of the South West Regional Association of Winston

“I was at the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry and picked up a leaflet “Chance of a Lifetime” and on the train back to Plymouth I read through the categories and spotted one that said Training, Education and Industry; well I was the Materials Manager for British Railway at the time and we were developing an NVQ for Railway Store Keepers, so it was exactly what I was already doing. I thought if I don’t apply, I won’t go anywhere, if I do apply I probably won’t get it but at least I will have given it a chance.”

I only had about 4 or 5 days until the closing date, so I had to send off for an application form, quickly fill it out and post it back.

Malcolm’s application was successful and in early 1996 he undertook a six-week tour of railway operations in Hong Kong, Australia, and USA, the information he gathered was put to good use in practices back here in the UK.

Malcolm Harrison The idea of the Fellowship is that if you’re awarded a Fellowship you get funded to travel for 4-8 weeks anywhere in the world where you think you can find interesting ideas for the topic of your Fellowship.

The Trust was established in 1965 following on from Sir Winston Churchill’s death. It was created as a national memorial to his achievements as a national leader. Plans for this had been developed over many years before his death with the approval of both himself and his family.

Churchill Fellows. Malcolm applied to become a Fellow in 1995 and he tells us that it all happened very last minute:

E

very year, the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust awards 150 Fellowships. These fund outstanding individuals to travel for 4-8 weeks, anywhere in the world, researching a topic of their choice among global leaders in their field. On their return, the Trust will help them to share their global learning with professions and communities across the UK.

The topics are chosen by the applicants and they typically choose it by observing something in their everyday lives that they think can be done better.

Jonathan Lorie - the Communications Director of the Winston Memorial Trust explains the various responsibilities that a Fellow takes on: “In their time out there, they research who they’re going to visit, the projects they’re going to see, the top practitioners in that field, so they can really get an idea of the best practice that’s happening anywhere in the world.”

“Their major responsibility is that when they come home, we ask them to make a real effort to share what they’ve discovered with people in their profession, or their community - depending on what their topic is - so that the ideas that they’ve brought back will start to be put into practice by people here and make a difference in that way. Their major responsibility is really to make sure what they discover gets put into practice in the UK.”

They have no requirements about your qualifications, your age, as long as you’re 18 and over and no requirements about your background. Jonathan tells us that they receive applications from people right across the age range from 18-70 and very much get people who are not overly qualified or super senior in their professions. “There is a deliberate attempt to sign people who haven’t perhaps had opportunities of this kind from other sources. We very much try to keep it universal for UK citizens.”

Mark met a Fellow in the Galápagos who encouraged him to apply; five years later he made the decision to fill out the application and has been awarded a Fellowship to begin his travels in April this year.

The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust has a saying that a Fellowship is for life. They will continue to support them for many years after their return.

The projects funded by Winston Memorial Trust are very much led by the individual and how they want to progress their project. Quite often they are like a cause for them, it’s often something that they’re really passionate about and so our job is really just to do it in the range of ways they want to. Jonathan Lorrie tells us about one of the most moving Fellowships they had: “One of the most moving Fellowships recently was a couple who had lost their son who was in his 20s. They got very interested in how families cope with bereavement, so they went to America and talked to various bereavement projects and groups over there.” “They made a film about their travels across America and talking to people who had been in the same situation and found ways of coming to terms with it as much as you can. The film is now on general release in cinemas in the UK, so that’s a really unusual way to progress what your cause is, but we helped them with that by publicising the launch and so on and so forth.” The documentary film is titled ‘A Love that Never Dies’. You can read more about their journey here: www.wcmt.org.uk/fellows/ news/blog-beyond-bereavement

Malcolm is very passionate about the Trust, he says that it opens doors and he wouldn’t be where he is today without it: “There’s no way I would have been chatting with members of the House of Lords without it. For example, I’m in and out of the House of Lords, I go to meet John Bercow (Speaker of the House of Commons), I’m a member of the National Liberal Club, I’m a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts all thanks to the arrangements between the Churchill Memorial Trust which has opened doors.”

As the Queen is a patron to the Winston Churchill Trust, Malcolm was invited to meet her in March 2015 on the 50th anniversary of Churchill’s death. We can see that the framed photos are now hanging proudly in the office.

“Aquatic plants are some of the fastest disappearing habitats on the planet and seagrasses are the most widespread.” Mark explains, “I spent a lot of time in the aquarium looking at seagrasses in the UK and along the south coast and it’s in quite juvenile stages of how we manage that feature of marine protected areas in comparison to other places around the world – which is the whole concept of the Fellowship.”

The Fellowship is open to absolutely every UK citizen. You have to be 18 or over and you have to be a resident in the UK, otherwise, there are no requirements whatsoever.

Mark is passionate about Aquatic Plants and will be travelling out to Abu Dhabi on the first leg of his journey to find out how they manage and fund their research:

Mark Parry is a Marine Biologist based at the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth who has recently been awarded a Fellowship.

RECORD-BREAKING PUB QUIZ RAISES £5,000 FOR LOCAL CHARITY SHEKINAH!

E

ngineering consultants, Services Design Solution Ltd (SDS) held their 5th annual charity pub quiz at the Walkabout Pub in Plymouth and raised a staggering £5,000 for Shekinah.

There was a total of 29 teams at the quiz, comprising engineers, contractors, architects, project managers and clients, who enjoyed a fun, well-organised evening.

Shekinah are a local charity offering support and training opportunities to those suffering from poverty, homelessness, substance abuse and mental health issues.

Deserving champions of the night were engineering and services provider NG Bailey.

John Hamblin - Chief Executive of Shekinah - gave a presentation about the work of the charity and said the money raised will support the work Shekinah does in ending rough sleeping and helping people improve their lives away from the streets.

Members of staff from the Santander bank wereals helped out on the night by selling raffle tickets ando present and generously contributed £1000 to the total amount raised promised to match fund up to a certain amount. Local photographer Trevor Burrows was also on hand to capture the evening’s highlights.

Following on from the quiz, there was an impressive raffle of prizes donated by the teams, ranging from a day trip with lunch on a yacht and an X-Box console to shopping vouchers and bottles of champagne and gin. SDS, whose head office is in The Millfields, is committed to ensuring that they contribute positively to the community. In addition to supporting local charities, they provide mentoring and work experience schemes for aspiring engineering students. SDS also take part in the ‘Building Plymouth’ initiative to encourage careers in construction, and they currently have six apprentices across their offices in Plymouth, Exeter and Bristol. Shaun Hoppins - Managing Director of SDS - said: “We are so pleased to be able to support this local charity and bring clients and colleagues together to raise more than we ever have from our annual quiz night.”’

Starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Maika Monroe, Isabelle Huppert
