Editor's Note... Hello! I hope everyone enjoyed April’s sunshine, maybe we can start to see more of that this month! Let’s take a moment to look at the exciting things happening locally. You may remember the stories of a bright patchwork elephant from your younger years and now he is bringing 40 of his friends to Plymouth for a big parade! St Luke’s Hospice is working in partnership with Wild in Art and Andersen Press to bring Elmer to guide you through Britain’s Ocean City. If you’re a small business or even a sole trader, you may often find yourself feeling quite isolated. The rebranded Plym Chamber can help you to find your feet with other like-minded business people. Great things can be achieved in collaboration, because “Together, we can do so much.” With summer on the horizon, a day out to the beach may be on your mind, but a dip in the sea is no good if we can’t appreciate our waters. Celebrate our oceans here in Plymouth this World Ocean’s Day by reading up on the suggestions from the National Marine Aquarium.

WORLD OCEANS DAY: HOW TO DO YOUR BIT FOR THE OCEAN HERE IN PLYMOUTH OM chats to Summer Snell, Public Engagement Host at the National Marine Aquarium and member of the World Oceans Day Youth Advisory Council for 2019

O

n the 8th June scores of people from across the globe are set to come together in celebration of our Ocean, and thanks to Sir David Attenborough and his immensely popular Blue Planet II, this year it is expected to be a bigger and better occasion than ever before. Shining a spotlight on the plight of our Ocean and the marine life that resides within it, the documentary series has been instrumental in encouraging positive behaviour changes in the general public, and an article in The Metro just last week claimed that the consumption of single-use plastics had fallen by a whopping 53% as a result of the ‘Attenborough effect’. With more people starting to become aware of the issues our Ocean faces, experts at the National Marine Aquarium - an Ocean conservation charity - are hoping that the impact will go beyond the reduction of plastic pollution alone. “If you’re wondering just why you should care about the health of our Ocean, then how about this for starters? The Ocean sustains all life on earth and is responsible for the oxygen you take in from every second breath”, says Summer Snell, a Host at the NMA who is one of just two specially selected UK members of the World Oceans Day Youth Advisory Council for 2019. “Most of us live our lives blissfully unaware of how our daily actions impact on the health of the Ocean, and how the Ocean, in turn, has an influence on our everyday lives. “The Ocean is what makes the earth habitable and supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems, and it’s also a major influence on weather and climate. “It is great that Plymouth – as Britain’s Ocean City - has been awarded Plastic Free Waterfront status, but there is still plenty more that we, as individuals, can be doing to protect our slice of the Ocean. There is only one Ocean, and what we do to it here has an impact that reaches much further than we can imagine. Small, positive actions all add up.” Want to get involved with the action this World Oceans Day? Here are three ways you can.

10 May 2019

CLEAN YOUR LOCAL BEACH The National Marine Aquarium organises local beach cleans throughout the year to help keep our shores clean and free of litter and plastic pollution - and as well as getting members of the public involved, the staff often pop down to nearby Teat’s Hill to do a quick clean-up themselves. “We love it when people come along to our NMA Beach Cleans, and always promote them beforehand on our website and social media channels. “If you can’t make it to an organised event though, then don’t worry – you can still do your bit. Next time you’re down at the beach or near the water, just take a rubbish bag and a pair of gloves with you and pick up any litter you can see. It will only take you five minutes, but if we all did it then we could make a huge difference”

REDUCE YOUR CONSUMPTION OF SINGLE-USE PLASTICS One study has found that discarded plastic waste could outweigh fish by 2050 if we don't make changes soon. Plastic breaks down over time and turns into little pieces that don't go away. These small pieces of plastic are everywhere in the ocean and are being consumed by everything from the smallest plankton all the way up to the largest whales. There are lots of easy ways you can cut down your consumption of single-use plastics, from swapping supermarket carrier bags, water bottles and takeaway coffee cups for re-usable versions to investing in a zip-up fabric garment bag to take with you to the dry cleaners. “The important thing is not to get overwhelmed”, says Summer. “It can be disheartening, when you’re trying to cut down, to realise just how much plastic we inadvertently bring into our homes, much of this due to the options available to us in supermarkets. “Going entirely plastic free is difficult but remember that every small change you make will add up to other people’s to make a big difference, and have a really positive impact on our Ocean.”

Call OM Plymouth Magazine 01752 691007

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE OCEAN The NMA as an Ocean Conservation Charity has been working hard over its twenty-year history to connect people with our Ocean. “The idea is that by educating people about the importance of our Ocean and inspiring them to interact with it – whether it’s getting them to spend time at the beach, go rock-pooling, snorkelling or diving, take a boat trip - we can inspire positive change – creating a healthier Ocean for the benefit and enjoyment of all”, says Summer. “This World Oceans Day, we’ll be celebrating our Ocean in style, with lots of fun and educational activities planned. We hope that as many people as possible will come along to the NMA for the day and take the time to find a little bit more about the Ocean.” To find out more, visit www.nationalaquarium.co.uk

f you have trotted past Toys R Us at the bottom end of the city centre recently, you may have seen the herd of elephants gathered together inside the building. Whilst that might sound alarming, it’s nothing to worry about. For ten weeks this summer, 40 fabulously colourful and unique elephants will be taking you on a trail throughout Plymouth’s city centre and beyond. Elmer’s Big Parade will not only help you to explore Britain’s Ocean City, it will also create long-lasting memories and make a real difference to the patients and families of St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth. St Luke’s is working in partnership with Wild in Art and Andersen Press to bring this mass participation, family friendly art trail to life; featuring the much-loved children’s character of Elmer, created by Devon-born artist and author David McKee.

Each of the 40 Elmer sculptures will be designed by both renowned or emerging local and national artists, hand-picked by a specially formed art panel from the 180 designs originally submitted. Adrian Carey - the St Luke’s Project Manager - explains how Elmer’s Big Parade is essentially a public art project:

“We have 40 large Elmer sculptures which we’ll be positioning throughout the city and into Cornwall. Each one has been uniquely designed by a chosen artist.” “We have an incredible range of artists from Brian Pollard - who is obviously an established and world-renowned name - through to local amateurs, students, professional artists and artists who paint sculptures on art trails around the country for a living! Each one of those sculptures will be on display at a different location around the city engaging with the public, allowing them to enjoy the different designs from an art perspective.”

As well as an impressive collection of 40 large elephants, there are also 25 smaller ‘Young Elmers’ currently being designed by local schools as part of an Education Trail. Alongside their Elmer sculpture, schools have been provided with an education resource pack which can be used to drive the creative process to piece together an artistic design for the Young Elmer, but it can also be used for lesson planning.

Adrian Carey & Emma Couch

14 May 2019

“The Elmer books are very simplistic on one level,” Adrian explains, “but when you dig a little deeper you can start to

Call OM Plymouth Magazine 01752 691007

uncover themes that are more profound and far-reaching, including some themes that overlay with the St Luke’s perspective of care and compassion.” Within the Education Programme St Luke’s are also able to include some of their messages around death and dying in an age-appropriate way. Currently, 1 in 29 children are experiencing bereavement of a parent or sibling, which averages around one child in every class. “Elmer is a key that unlocks the work we do and allows the public to start thinking about St Luke’s in a different way.” Emma Couch – the trail’s Account Executive - shares how Elmer was the best choice for this trail: “He’s just the perfect character for us. There’s been many different sculpture trails around the country, but when St Luke’s met with Elmer, it just matched in so many ways. Not only because people are familiar with Elmer and he’s a much-loved childhood favourite, but also because of the subjects covered within his stories, topics such as diversity and inclusion.

www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

been an incredible intertwining of stories; and the more people we meet, the more stories there are, and that’s become an integral part of the entire project.”

“Elmer has already received a huge amount of interest and the trail hasn’t even begun!” “The reaction has been huge, there’s been a giant wave of attention since the project launched and the sculpture painting begun at our Herd HQ studio.” Emma explains, “People have been coming forward to share their stories and volunteers and businesses have been stepping up to approach us with offers of help and sponsorship. Not just because they have an existing connection with St Luke’s, but because they want to build a relationship with us, which is so important as well - many of us or our families may need the support of St Luke’s at some point in the future.”

Elmer’s Big Parade will see a potential 200,000 people taking part in the trail.

Elmer connects so well with St Luke’s, the concept that ‘elephants never forget’ and making memories for example - there are just so many themes that overlay and fit perfectly. The key element to Elmer’s Big Parade is the engagement it has and will continue to see past the end of the trail in the autumn. Adrian says there has already been an incredible number of stories emerging as well as relationships developing across the entire project: “Whether it’s artists who have some sort of relationship with our care. Whether it’s businesses who’ve already raised funds for us but have chosen this year to do it in a different way by becoming engaged with the Elmer project, there has just

So far, Emma tells us that their social media engagement is off the chart, having reached over 62,000 people in the first month and a BBC Spotlight piece featuring the artist Colin Pethick being viewed over 100,000 times in 10 days, which is not only due to its content, but also due to the great work of Kamila and Scott from Eddystone Media, who manage Elmer’s social media campaign. When we first started working on Elmer’s Big Parade, everything seemed a long way off in the future, now the project is underway, it’s all starting to get very exciting for the St Luke’s team, with Adrian explaining that there’s something new happening every day: “Whether it’s an artist starting to paint, or forming a new relationship with a sponsor, or whether it’s an event that we’re hosting or involved with, there’s a constant stream of content and that

makes the campaign so much easier.”

The engagement never ends! “It’s a huge year for Elmer. 2019 is definitely Elmer’s year, he will also be turning 30 on May 25th.” Emma explains, “It’s going to be huge for Plymouth too. It’s a great thing to bring the community together - which it has certainly started to do on so many levels, be it schools, businesses, artists - everyone is becoming engaged and wanting to be involved.” The project ultimately aims to raise money for St Luke’s so that they may continue to care for patients living with life-limiting illnesses. Adrian tells us how the project has already got people talking about St Luke’s: “St Luke’s is an incredibly well-known organisation. So many people have heard of us and so many people know of one of our buildings and our locations, but the reality is they don’t know very much about us; there’s more to St Luke’s than the one or two things people may know. “For example, we see the vast majority of our patients in their own homes, we don’t just see everybody at Turnchapel. People just think of the building on the hill and that’s it, we’ve only 12 beds there, yet we see 3000 patients every year.” Elmer’s Big Parade will open on July 8th and continue for 10 weeks until September 16th. St Luke’s will then host a public viewing weekend open to anyone wanting to see the elephants they may have missed on the trail and after that, they will say goodbye to the Elmer’s as they are each auctioned. Adrian and Emma may feel sad to see the elephants go but will have very much enjoyed being involved in a project resulting in a lasting legacy of relationships with artists, schools and businesses and ultimately raise money and awareness for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth.

To find out how you can join the herd, please visit:

These days most of us are more than happy to travel to a good restaurant, some are happy to travel far to try a reputable restaurant with a high quality reputation for exquisite taste, good service and welcoming reception, but what if you didn’t have to travel, what if one of the best restaurants from Gloucestershire to Lands end was right here on our door step?

L

et us introduce to you Mr Moshahid Ali a man who will go above and beyond to create what has been said to be one of the best restaurants and dining experiences in the South West, Shapla Balti Cuisine. As the owner of the business, you can imagine that he has his hands full, but that doesn’t stop him from hosting the best service possible in an establishment that his customers describe as being “the best tasting Indian food in Plymouth”.

visited Mr Ali we find yet again, Shapla Balti Cuisine has been nominated and shortlisted for the 2018 British Curry Awards!

We visited Mr Ali a year ago as Shapla Balti had been nominated for the very prestigious British Curry Awards. Now one year later since the OM Team last

This is the second time that Mr Ali and his team have been shortlisted for the British Curry Awards and Mr Ali knows it won’t be their last because he has a fantastic

Shapla Balti is the only Indian restaurant to be shortlisted for the Best in South West category from Plymouth - and when considering that this category covers everything from Lands End up to Cheltenham, it’s easy to agree what an amazing achievement that is.

Mr Moshahid Ali team behind him. “It’s big thanks to my chef and my staff; they’re really hard working people. It’s a team effort. Like when you’re playing cricket, football, any team sport, no matter what a good player you are, you need the rest of the team there to win. So I believe it’s a team effort to satisfy the customers and it works. I have a great team behind me who are great to work with.”

The Best in South West category is shortlisted to only eight restaurants. Shapla Balti has come away with a prestigious certificate that states their title of being one of the best in the South West. Nominations are done anonymously but after building an impressive reputation for himself in the Plympton community, it’s perhaps a bit clearer to see people would choose Mr Ali’s establishment: “The people of Plympton have been very good to us, we’ve been here a while now and we have a nice community here. We’ve seen children come in, grow up and come in with their children!”

The team at OM very much enjoyed their visit to Shapla Balti!

AFTER BEING NOMINATED FOR THE BRITISH CURRY AWARDS, WE WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR CUSTOMERS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

“They will send their mystery shoppers who will come and taste your food, see the service, quality of waiters and how they are presenting themselves. You never know who they are but sometimes you get a feel for it because you get something like three weeks timeframe in October where they will come in. So I will normally work seven days just to make sure I’m here when they come!” “We found out we were nominated in September time.” Mr Ali tells us, “After that they send you the golden envelope saying “you have been shortlisted”. They will give you a category and then you have to book a table to go. We didn’t win last time, but this time we’re going to do more so we can.”

“With hard work, with determination and if you have the willpower I think we can win. I believe that myself and my staff work hard enough to impress our customers.” Mr Ali and his business partner Amirul Islam had a lovely time at the British Curry Awards and are looking forward to next year! Shapla Balti offers authentic Punjabi,

The British Curry Awards 2018 Kashmiri, Bengali and Indian Cuisine from their premises based on the Ridgeway, in Plympton. Mr Ali believes his establishment stands above the rest because of all of the hard work that is put in: “I believe that we work very hard. We do our best to satisfy our customers and I believe the reviews that our customers have left on Trip Advisor and word of mouth have given us this edge of where we are at the moment.”

Shapla Balti always puts their customers first. “Everyone who comes through that door we want to make sure that their experience is as comfortable as possible, we just want them to come here from home and be able to relax.”

Shapla Balti offers a wide range of dishes with a different variety of taste from mild, medium, spicy and hot to suit everyone’s palate. Shapla Balti sources their produce both locally and worldwide, so you know you’re getting an authentic Indian dish when you visit this establishment. Some of their signature dishes include the Tandoori Garlic Chilli Chicken and the Lamb Chun Chun - which is Mr Ali’s personal favourite! People really enjoy Shapla Balti Cuisine’s food and maybe that’s why they’re always returning for more:

“The best meal I’ve had in a long time! The staff are so friendly, especially the owner Mr Ali- you are treated like friends from the second you walk in, nothing is too much hassle!” “The food is amazing, especially the naan breads. Mr Ali is more than happy to give knowledgeable recommendations based on your taste, so you feel confident in trying something new. The menu is great and has so much choice. I’ve already made plans to come back again.” If you’re still not convinced, you can read the rest of their reviews on their Trip Advisor page - but rest assured, there’s definitely a reason that they have been awarded a Certificate of Excellence four years running!

Looking to the future of the business, Mr Ali has no plans to leave Plympton. He loves the area and the people who are part of it. “I am friends with my customers, we have a great atmosphere here and everybody loves to socialise - that’s what makes this place so special.” Shapla Balti is open from 5:30-11:30pm 7 days a week, and delivers to the people of Plympton. You may have already found your go-to Indian, but it’s always good to try something different; and going by their recent success, it’s definitely worth a try!

climate change: HOW WE’RE SLOWLY KILLING OUR PLANET

This editorial has been sponsored by: Deltor Printers, Moorheat & Taylor Wimpey.

Global Warming is breaking new records every year, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down, but it’s not just the rise in temperature that is causing drastic environmental changes.

G

lobal climate change, has already seen some major effects on the environment. But the shrinking glaciers, rising sea levels and increasing temperature of the Earth are nothing to worry about - right? If the changes to our climate are not on your list of concerns, maybe it’s something you should be adding to it right this moment. Human induced climate change is now the biggest risk facing our planet, surpassing terrorism, nuclear war, and an economic collapse. According to NASA, during the 20th century the Earth’s average temperature has increased by about 2 degrees Fahrenheit. This seemingly small change may not sound like a lot, but this unusual event in our planet’s history is having a major impact. Small changes in temperature have meant enormous changes in the environment. An example of this impact can be seen by looking back at the end of the last ice age, at this point the Northeast United States was covered by more than 3,000 feet of ice and average temperatures were only 5 to 9 degrees cooler than today.

what causes climate change?

what effect will this have?

There are many factors that contribute towards climate change, but the scientists agree that the main cause is human activity, which they refer to as anthropogenic climate change.

Without a change to our current lifestyles and the slowing down of the current damage being impacted, global warming is likely to be the greatest cause of species extinction in the 21st century. To narrow down the effects more specifically would be an impossible task, so let’s look at some of the different areas:

The greenhouse effect is a process that occurs when gases in Earth’s atmosphere trap the Sun’s heat. This process makes Earth much warmer than it would be without an atmosphere. The lifestyles humans lead, can change the delicate balance of the natural greenhouse. Throughout the last century, the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil has increased the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). These changes in the natural greenhouse can lead to effects such as the earth becoming warmer. This warming could in turn lead to more evaporation and precipitation overall. This may also have an effect on our ocean temperatures and may partially melt glaciers which could lead to an increase in sea levels. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change - a group of 1,300 independent scientific experts from countries all over the world, concluded in its Fifth Assessment Report that there is more than a 95% probability that human activities over the past 50 years have warmed our planet.

Other occurrences that could lead to climate change is the strength of the sun, changes in the Earth’s orbit, plate tectonics and volcanic eruptions, ocean currents, vegetation coverage on land, and meteorite impacts. 22 May 2019 20

WILDLIFE Climate change and global warming is the key impact in habitat disruption for different species of wildlife. This means that the ecosystems that animals have spent millions of years adapting to are undergoing some swift and major changes in response to climate change. According to scientists each day around 150-200 species of plant, insect, bird and mammal become extinct. In response to the changes in their habitats, animals have attempted to move to new areas in order to adapt and survive. Unfortunately with the continuous growth and expansion of the human population many areas that were once suitable for wildlife have now been reconstructed into residential and industrial developments; therefore preventing animals and plants from moving into alternative habitats.

OCEANS The oceans are the largest ‘carbon sinks’ in the world, meaning that they absorb huge amounts of carbon dioxide and prevent it from reaching the upper atmosphere. But warmer temperatures means more acidic oceans, which has lead to a number of unfavourable events. The trend in ocean acidification is

is about 30 times greater than natural variation. This means that many ocean species are unable to probably form their skeletons and shells; this also has a major impact on ecosystems such as coral reefs, which are particularly sensitive to increases in temperature. Climate change is just one of the issues facing our oceans. The damaging effects caused by the dumping of waste such as chemicals and plastic have also had a detrimental effect on this ecosystem.

weather changes Scientists have already documented the impacts of climate change, and if we continue at the current rate we can expect to see this decline at an even faster rate. Precipitation (rain and snowfall) has increased across the globe. On the opposite end, some regions are experiencing more severe drought which increases the risk of wildfires, lost crops, and drinking water shortages. Rising temperatures leads to more evaporation, which leads to more moisture in the air and increases the intensity of rainfall; therefore creating floods, storms and even more intense hurricanes in certain regions. These are just some examples of how climate change can and already is affecting our planet.

plastic pollution Plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic waste in the environment. It negatively impacts wildlife, their habitats and humans. Plastics that act as pollutants are categorised into micro-, meso-, or macros debris, based on size.

Plastics are inexpensive and durable, and as a result, levels of plastic production by humans are high. Large volumes of plastic waste have been shown to be harmful to our environment. In 1950, the world’s population of 2.5 billion produced 1.5 million tons of plastic. In 2016, a global population of more than 7 billion people produced over 320 million tons of plastic. This is set to double by 2034.

A large majority of plastic waste, such as plastic bags, straws, bottles and fishing nets end up in our Oceans. The currents then end up bringing plastic waste to places without human inhabitants.

Toxic chemicals from plastic and are found in the blood and tissue of nearly all of us and can cause a number of health issues.

Of the 260 million tons of plastic the world produces each year, about ten per cent ends up in the Ocean, according to a Greenpeace report (Plastic Debris in the World’s Oceans, 2006). Seventy per cent of the mass eventually sinks, damaging life on the seabed. The rest floats in open seas. Unfortunately, plastic is forever and we currently do not recycle and reuse all our plastic waste. We have become used to using an item and simply throwing it away. The issue with plastic is it will never degrade and go back to nature. After around 700 years it will start photodegrading and breakdown into mirco particles,.

Although plastic pollution is a separate threat to this planet on its own, new research shows that there’s a link between plastic and climate change. Research carried out by the University of Hawaii led by Sarah-Jeanne Royer has demonstrated that many plastics actually give off powerful greenhouse gases as they break down, therefore contributing to climate change. Links between climate change and plastic are already known - six per cent of global oil consumption goes towards creating plastics - but this is believed to be the first time a study has demonstrated that plastics actually release greenhouse gases after being created.

100,000 marine mammals and turtles are killed by marine plastic pollution annually. 26 May 2019

Call OM Plymouth Magazine 01752 691007

But the basic consensus is that over time, the amount of gas that these plastics release increases - this leads to a feedback loop: as the climate changes, the planet gets hotter, the plastic gives off more methane, increasing the rate of climate change - it’s just a never-ending circle!

how can i help? There’s so much advice that you can use as a guideline on how to combat climate change, so sometimes it may be hard to figure out where to start. We have the resources and knowledge in order to turn around the effects of climate change and people around the world are working towards reducing and stopping the processes that cause changes in the climate - but much more needs to be done.

Make your home energy efficient Our homes contribute a large proportion of the UK’s overall carbon emissions. Over half of home energy is used for heating, so ensuring that your home is well insulated is one of the best steps homeowners can take. Make sure that the walls, roofs and windows are insulated so that you can cut back on heat waste. Another important step would be to switch your energy provider to one who offers renewable energy.

make a change in your diet After fossil fuels, the food industry - in particular, the meat and dairy sector - is one of the biggest contributors to climate change. If cattle were their own nation, they would be the world’s third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, after China and the US.

This doesn’t mean that you need to switch to a vegan or vegetarian diet, simply just cutting down on the amount of meat and dairy products can really help make a difference. According to the Wolrd Resources Institute, by reducing your consumption of animal protein by half, you can cut your diet’s carbon footprint by more than 40%.

Transportation You probably saw this one coming, but it’s one of the largest sources of global warming emissions. Transport now accounts for 26% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, compared to 25% coming from energy supplies. The main sources were petrol and diesel cars.

I know that you may not want to switch to cycling to work especially with the unpredictable weather we have in this country! So you’ll be pleased to hear that there are other options. Fuel-efficient vehicles use less gas to travel the same distances as their less efficient counterparts; cleaner fuels produce fewer emissions when they’re burned; there’s also the option of using an electric vehicle that produces even fewer emissions than their conventional counterparts, and when the electricity comes from renewable sources, all-electric vehicles produce zero emissions to drive.

get involved Make a big impact by getting involved in local groups who are already taking action to combat climate change. Learn about the communities getting involved - Clean Our Patch is a great example of a local community of dedicated litter pickers getting involved to clean our streets. Clean Our Patch is a city-wide group and although they live in Keyham, they are happy to tackle difficult litter across Plymouth. Clean Our Patch is working closely with local councillors and Plymouth City Council to clean our city. The group meets every weekend during term time and more often during the holidays. Their Ambassadors in Keyham, Plympton and Plymstock hold clean ups at different times and the best way to find out when and where to meet is by checking the events on their page (facebook.com/CleanOurPatch/events).

Clean Our Patch’s bag count update is 1885.5 bags collected since 5th January 2019, equating to roughly 14 tonnes of litter! Being close to the seaside, there are already plenty of groups getting involved in beach cleans to help tackle plastic pollution. There are endless amounts of ways to make a difference, it’s just about educating yourself on the matter and learning more about how to solve and combat climate change.

From managing to marketing and everything in between, running a small business or being a sole trader these days can be both exciting and overwhelming. It’s a place where no two workdays are exactly the same and an environment where unpredictable things can happen. At times some of us may often find ourselves feeling quite isolated, however by coming together with other like minded businesses and business people, it’s astonishing how much can be achieved through a collaboration of different skill sets, mindsets and overall, people. This is exactly what the Plym Chamber are all about.

Formerly known as the Plympton Chamber, the newly renamed ‘Plym Chamber’ is rebranding and expanding to reach out to even more businesses across Plymouth and the surrounding area in the coming year. Plympton Chamber, not to be confused with Devon and Plymouth Chamber which is a separate organisation, first became established in 2010. The local community aimed to engage with local business folk who had a common aim and purpose. Stella Goodman - Secretary of Plym Chamber and founding member of Plympton Chamber - wanted to utilise the Plympton Chamber to be able to reach out to more

local businesses, especially smaller ones: “Our mission statement is ‘Together we can do so much’ and I still think that’s true today - especially if you’re a sole trader because when you’re working by yourself, you can be quite isolated. So we thought the Chamber should be reaching out, in particular, to small businesses as collectively we can achieve a lot together.”

Now known as the Plym Chamber which is currently standing at 120 members, the community aims to keep steadily expanding and branching out to even more local businesses and business owners. The decision to rebrand didn’t come overnight. Although they are based in Plympton, Beverley Clarke - a volunteer for Plym Chamber - explains that a lot of their members are based outside of the PL7 area, so there was a need to expand:

T

here are many different networking groups that business owners can explore around Plymouth and the South Hams however one of the largest networking groups, local to Plympton, is set to see a lot of exciting changes in the very near future.

“Part of our success has been our breakfast networking meetings. This has enabled the Chamber to grow from 20 people to 120 people. There is obviously a need for small businesses to work together, and it’s just getting bigger and bigger. The majority of our members now are outside of the PL7 area.” The name change will see the launch of the new Plym Chamber VIP Rewards Scheme. These rewards can be obtained by showing commitment to the Chamber and receiving points for doing so for example by bringing a guest along to a Breakfast meeting or by hosting a networking event for the Chamber. By encouraging more guests along they will gain an insight into the opportunities within the Chamber and, hopefully, see the benefits of joining the Plym Chamber, or even helping out with the community activities and events that they hold. Matthew Bryant - the current Chairman of the Plym Chamber - tells us more about how this works: “It’s a points-based rewards scheme, where points are awarded based on the amount of involvement and interaction with the Chamber, bearing in mind that we are all volunteers organising it, so it is quite a commitment, and therefore the more people and the more members who can contribute and get involved in some way, then the more successful we will be as a group.” The Plym Chamber caters for all businesses

The aim of the Plym Chamber now is to encourage more members to join. Their goal is to hit the 200 members mark within the next year.

been proud to represent the local business community at civic events and through engaging with local councillors and MPS and with local interest groups.”

Matthew Bryant describes the great opportunities that come with being a Plym Chamber member:

The members currently engaging with the Plym Chamber have driven the name change. The community currently reaches out to places such as Tavistock, Saltash, Plymouth, Ivybridge and even Totnes!

“The Breakfast Club really struck me specifically because it’s a good opportunity to share topics of interest.” and its membership covers a wide range of different occupations, trades and professions from the business community including lawyers, accountants, financial advisors, builders, plumbers, painters and decorators … the list goes on! There are all sorts of changes in motion for the new Chamber; not just the rewards package for members. Mark Hinchliffe - a committee member for Plym Chamber - explains that they will also be offering seminars where members can learn new skills that they can take away and implement into their own businesses: “We will be hosting a number of different seminars using professional trainers offering a cost effective way for small businesses to ensure their staff have the relevant training in areas such as health and safety. We are also planning to run seminars on the benefits of social media to promote your business, and to provide guidance for members on use of the chamber’s website and how to get the most out of it including the use of website reviews.”

Plym Chamber is an affordable business network with real benefits. “One of the things we’ve always aspired to be is inexpensive.” Stella explains, “Every event that we organise we try and do it cost-effectively. It’s all going to be very affordable.” The current price to join the Plym Chamber as a new member is only a £75 joining fee for an annual membership. After that, if you setup to pay through standing order, the current annual renewal fee stands at only £60 per annum (corporate offers also available).

So you might have a presentation from a member firm on a specific legal topic, you might have a property specialist giving an update on the current housing market, or it could be individual businesses just having a platform to promote their services and their products to other members. And it’s really not easy for small businesses to reach out to the larger community, so it’s a ready-made network for that.”

The Chamber is also involved with a number of charities. They have recently worked with St Luke’s Plymouth and Friends and Family of Special Children. Through the Plym Chamber, they are able to give fantastic causes like these an opportunity to promote their events, but they also raised £1,700 at a Breakfast Meeting for St Luke’s last year. They are continually seeking out opportunities to engage with and help the local community.

The Plym Chamber currently hosts a number of different meetings. On the second Tuesday of each month they hold their popular Breakfast Meeting at Boringdon Park Golf Club, in addition there is a Talking Tables supper club, with guest speakers, which is held quarterly at Elfordleigh and also their well established Members Mingle, which is an opportunity for businesses to showcase their business at their place of work.

With such a wide range of businesses involved within the Chamber, it is important to cater to the needs of every member. Beverley explains that: “Taking away from what we learn from our Breakfast Meetings, it’s about listening to what our members want, so we can then go forward and deliver things that people may not do as an individual, but collectively as a group they might want to do. There are lots of ideas taking shape going forwards.”

“Before the name change, we felt outside of the breakfast meetings, people were put off joining because they thought the Plympton Chamber was exclusive to Plympton, but we hope that the name change will now help combat that.” Stella explains.

The aim of the Plym Chamber is to continue to grow and encourage people locally within Devon and Cornwall to join. “To summarise what the chamber has done up until now,” Matthew explains, “ the main aim has been to engage with the local community directly through staging events like “Light up Plympton” in the run up to Christmas whilst engaging with the business community at the same time - through events like the Breakfast Club meetings to improve and promote business referrals between members. We have also

Plym Chamber will be launching on May 1st. If you’re still unsure about why you should get involved with the Plym Chamber, Carolyn Croft - a committee member of Plym Chamber - has a very good reason why: “What’s very good about our Chamber and where it differs from some of the other networking groups, is that we’re quite informal and relaxed, everyone’s very approachable.” The Plym Chamber can help local businesses spread the word of what they do through their community and network, so it would be foolish not to take up the opportunity that is right on your doorstep! Together We can do so Much Plym Chamber is not affiliated to Devon and Plymouth Chamber.

a world without bees If one day bees significantly decline or go extinct, this will have a drastic impact on our lifestyles, whether we want it or not.

T

he bee population has decreased steadily over the past years, this decline could result in a huge impact on our food supply and therefore, our health. The vast majority of plants that we need for food rely on pollination, and with bees being one of the most prominent pollinating insects over any others (pollinating around one-third of food crops!), they are the most important pollinator of food crops. Loss of these pollinators could lead to lower availability of crops and wild plants that provide essential micro-nutrients for human diets. There are at least 1500 species of insect pollinators in the UK, including the honeybee that normally lives in hives managed by beekeepers. Others, like many species of bumblebees, solitary bees, moths, butterflies and hoverflies live in the wild.

A world without honeybees would also mean a world without fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Nearly one-third of the world’s crops are dependent on honeybees for pollination. Without bees, we may lose all of the plants that they pollinate. This would then mean that all of the animals that eat those plants and so on up the food chain. This means that a world without bees could struggle to keep up with the demands of the global human population of 7 billion. This would also mean that our supermarkets would have half the amount of fruit and vegetables! Bee populations are in decline, over one-third of the UK’s bee population has disappeared over the past decade and 24% of Europe’s bumblebees are now threatened with extinction. With unusually high rates of decline in various bee colonies, why are we seeing such a drop in these crucial pollinators? According to Green Peace, the main reasons for global bee-decline are linked to industrial agriculture, parasites/ pathogens and climate change. Pesticides, disease, parasites, poor weather, and the stress of being trucked from orchard-to-orchard to pollinate different crops all play a role in the decline of managed honeybee populations.

A world without bees would mean that we would see a cease in production of many crops that depend entirely on pollinators. Please mention OM Plymouth Magazine when responding to adverts

According to the Organic Soil Association, it is estimated that it would cost UK farmers £1.8 billion a year to pollinate their crops manually if wild bees disappeared. Although there are other pollinators, their primary focus is to collect the nectar from the plant and move on - any pollen collected is usually a happy accident.

You can help the bee population in a number of ways and you don’t have to be a beekeeper to do so! Plant flowers in your garden so the bees can collect their nectar - they especially love cottage garden flowers and native wildflowers! Provide shelters for them, they need them in order to nest and hibernate: different bees need different homes, so make sure to research before you buy or make a bee shelter. These additions to your garden will help the bees thrive, and it’s a great touch to brighten up your outdoor space!

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK

I

n a world that is continuing to open up to and making a consistent effort to understand those with mental health issues, it’s no surprise that Mental Health Awareness Week is now a firmer fixture on calendars around the UK and beyond. The week is organised by the Mental Health Foundation, and focuses on a major issue each and every year. Mental Health Awareness Week 2019 takes place from Monday 13th to Sunday 19th May 2019. The theme for 2019 is Body Image - how we think and feel about our bodies. In 2018, Mental Health Awareness Week was focused on stress. The Mental Health Foundation explains how “Research has shown that 16 million people experience a mental health problem each year, and stress is a key factor in this.” As part of its attempts to further open dialogue about mental health, the foundation organised a so-called “Curry and Chaat” initiative, where people got together with friends and enjoyed their company over a curry, whilst raising money for good causes.

MENTAL HEALTH IN THE UK Mental health issues affect approximately 1 in 4 adults and 1 in 10 children according to the NHS. In England, 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem - such as anxiety and depression.

Mental health problems are a common human experience and they can often be upsetting, confusing and frightening. There are many different types of mental health problems, some of which have the same symptoms as others. The most common mental disorder in the UK is anxiety and depression, with 7.8% of people meeting the criteria for diagnosis. According to the Mental Health Foundation, mixed anxiety and depression has been estimated to cause one-fifth of days lost from work in Britain.

Mental health research receives only 5.5% (£115 million) of total UK health research spending. Mental health services in the UK are under a lot of pressure. These services have long waiting times and in some parts of the country, lack specialist services. According to the Mental Health Foundation in the UK, the estimated costs of mental health problems are £70-100 billion each year and account for 4.5% of GDP.

Mental health problems are one of the main causes of the burden of disease worldwide. In the UK, they are responsible for the largest burden of disease - 28% of the burden, compared to 16% each for cancer and heart disease.

The Guardian revealed that coroners had issued NHS providers of care with legal warning notices over 271 deaths of mental health patients that occurred in England and Wales between 2012 and 2017 following failings in the treatment they had provided. One of the key elements behind this is due to the understaffing in the NHS, especially in mental health services. Between 2009 and 2017, the number of mental health nurses fell by 13%. The NHS bosses know that they are constrained by serious understaffing, but they are aiming to shorten waiting times and increase access to mental health care for children and adults.

MAINTAINING GOOD MENTAL HEALTH If you or someone you know is suffering from a mental health problem, it is important to make sure that you or your friend/family member are seeking the right advice.

It’s not always obvious that someone is experiencing a mental health problem unless they tell you outright, it’s best to respond sensitively to someone who seems troubled. Often it is difficult to know what to do if you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health problem, but as soon as you are aware that there’s an issue, it’s important not to wait. Seeking professional help is not always everyone’s first step - as it can be very difficult for someone to accept that they’re suffering from a mental health problem - the best way to help yourself or others who are experiencing problems with their mental health is simply to talk to them.

At the end of December, there were 1,316,146 people in contact with mental health services. Source: NHS Digital, Mental Health Services Monthly Statistics - Final December 2018, Provisional January 2019

In 2011, the amount spent on cancer research was £521 million, resulting in approximately £1,571 per cancer patient, while the average spent on mental health was £115, equating approximately to £9.75 per adult with a mental health problem.

Between 1 October and 31 December 3,089 new referrals for people aged under 19 with eating disorder issues were received.

In Time to Change’s attitudes to mental illness 2014 report, they illustrated that attitudes towards mental health problems are continuing to change for the better. The number of people acknowledging that they know someone close to them who has had a mental illness increased from 58% in 2009 to 65% in 2014. 40% of people surveyed said they would be comfortable talking to their employer about mental health problems, although nearly half (48%) said they would feel uncomfortable, showing that there is still some way to go to improve attitudes.

HOW TO ACCESS SUPPORT Mental health services are free on the NHS, but in most cases, you will need a referral from your GP to access however, some do allow people to refer themselves, this can include services for drug and alcohol problems, as well as psychological therapies (IAPT) services. The stigma behind mental health continues to fade, with more and more people seeking professional help and more individuals openly talking about their own mental health experiences.
