Westcountry Tile and Bathroom, based in Christian Mill Business Park, has over 25 years experience in supplying and fitting bathrooms and wet rooms. Jamie Shewbrook, owner and Director has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to bathroom design- we catch up with him at the showroom to find out more.

First opened in March 2014, the showroom boasts a huge range of products offering bathrooms from contemporary to classic design. The dedicated team offer Inspiration, consultation, design and a installation services making for a hassle free and friendly approach to your new bathroom- from start to finish.

Looking back, Jamie originally had eagerness to join the police force from school and began a pre-services course at the age of 17. At 18 Jamie applied for the police and was told that he would be an ideal candidate, but perhaps he should go and gain a year’s life experience before embarking on a career with the police force.

Taking this advice, Jamie started working for Plumb Center, originally as a stop gap

before going back to the forces. After a year went by, it was obvious that he had a drive and passion for the industry, impressing his superiors and gaining promotion to Area Sales Representative within 18 months.

After a successful period of nearly five years, Jamie was rewarded for his hard work with a brand new Plumb Center store, as a Branch Manager. He continued to grow within the company managing larger stores, developing staff, increases sales and margins over the next 4 years.

It wasn’t long before he was head hunted

by Plumbase to help rejuvenate their flagship Plymouth Store. Within 12 months he was able to increase sales, bring all their policies up to date, cleanse dead stock & generate more business for the company.

Jamie gained valuable industry experience over the course of his career history, working for both Plumb Center and Plumbase in fast paced and demanding roles.

estcountry tile and bathroom was born from a mixture of genuine passion and life-long aspiration from owner and Director Jamie Shewbrook. With over 25 years experience in the industry- Jamie’s drive and love for the industry has enabled him to run a polished and successful state of the art modern showroom.

Jamie explains that the idea of opening his own bathroom showroom had been a dream for many years; it was just a case of plucking up the courage and making the leap of faith.

“I just decided to act on it. It had been a pipedream for so long, I had the experience so I went for it”. Jamie spent some time putting a three year plan together, and pitched a detailed Profit and loss statement to the bank to get him started.

“Myself and my partner Melanie, had two young children at that point and we had recently moved house so everything was up in the air. We had no income so everything was riding on getting the new business up and running as soon as possible”.

Jamie looked everywhere for the perfect showroom when the 4000 sq ft premises became available at Christian Mill Business Park. Together with the help of his family and the good will of friends, Jamie put in long hours to get the showroom ready for opening.

The newest edition to the showroom is a state of the art, fully functional AXOR display- where clients can test the water pressure on a range of shower heads and faucets. Jamie explains that it may seem trivial, but when you are selling a dreamthese things matter.

Jamie explains that the team are on hand from start to finish. “First we talk through what is important to the client and what little touches really matter to them. Next we help to visualise the design by CAD drawings or hand drawn renders. Once we reach a stage where the client is 100% happy- we call upon our team of trusted installers to complete the fit out”.

Running a successful business may be time consuming enough for some people. Jamie not only balances a busy work and home life, but he also finds the time to compete in a number of fundraised events each year to raise money for charity.

Jamie’s experience knows no bounds, after previously Scaling the Great Wall of China in 2000, completing Mount Kilimanjaro in 2003, climbing Machu Picchu, crossing the Arctic on Husky dogs and most recently- taking on the infamous Marathon Des Sables, a gruelling 6 stage 156 mile marathon across the Sahara desert.

Looking to the future, Jamie aims to continuously progress in both his personal and work life. Already setting his sights on the next challenge - the Ultra trail de Mont Blanc, Jamie enjoys pushing himself to the limits whilst raising funds for a good cause.

In terms of the business- Jamie is already in the process of expanding his knowledgeable team, to further solidify the professionalism of the services on offer.

Butternut, Red Onion & Pumpkin Seed Salad Pair the sweetness of butternut and roasted red onions for a fantastic winter side salad. To turn it into a full meal, add cooked Puy or dark green lentils, goat’s cheese or feta and perhaps some strips of roasted red peppers.

Ingredients: 3 red onions, sliced into 1cm-thick discs 7 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 medium butternut squash, peeled & cut into chunks A few thyme sprigs (optional) 30g pumpkin seeds Pinch of hot smoked paprika 1 tbsp red or white wine vinegar (or use more balsamic) 1 tsp Dijon mustard, or to taste ¼ tsp crushed garlic, or to taste 1 bag of mixed salad leaves Salt & black pepper

Method: Heat the oven to 190°C/Gas 5. Keeping the onion discs whole, place them in a roasting tin and drizzle with a tablespoon or two of olive oil, the balsamic vinegar and a splash of water. Season with salt and pepper. Cover the tin with foil and roast for 30–40 minutes on a low shelf in the oven, until the onions are soft and sweet.

Meanwhile, place the squash chunks in another roasting tin, toss with a further tablespoon or so of oil to coat and a good sprinkling of salt and roast for around 30 minutes, until tender and lightly caramelised, throwing in the sprigs of thyme halfway through the cooking time (if using). While the vegetables are roasting, put the pumpkin seeds in a small pan with a teaspoon of olive oil, a pinch of salt and a pinch of paprika.

Toast over a medium heat, stirring or tossing frequently, until lightly browned, then transfer to a plate to stop them toasting further. Make a simple vinaigrette: whisk together the vinegar, around 3 tablespoons of olive oil, the mustard and garlic to taste. Season with salt and pepper. Put the salad leaves in a large salad bowl, pour over the dressing and toss to combine. Scatter over the butternut, onions and seeds.

Find out what happened when the OM team caught up with Clip ‘n Climb Plymouth Manager, Ian Stocker, a year after our first visit.

Based in The Ship at Derriford, the indoor activity arena is a great way to build selfconfidence, balance, problem solving and

perseverance skills in all ages. Since our visit to Clip n’ Climb in February last year, the venue has undergone a variety of exciting new changes, including: the arrival of a state-of-the-art interactive climbing wall, a selection of brand-new party packages and some eye-grabbing new wall art.

have overhangs to tackle. It’s a sneaky and unique way of learning - I love it.”

It’s not surprising that climbing is an effective way to get fit and, although there’s nothing set in stone yet, plans are in the pipeline to put together a ‘Climb Fit’ programme.

“Our aim is for it to be similar to circuit training, but combining the climbing walls. Even after just 10 minutes, climbing can be very tiring! It gets your heart racing and is much more fun than standing in a gym and lifting weights, or running on the spot.”

Marjon Sports Centre Marjon Sport and Health centre, situated near Derriford Hospital, is not just for professionals and students. Fully open to the public, the university’s state-of-the-art sports centre is fast becoming the health hub of choice for fitness enthusiasts across Plymouth and beyond.

arjon easily competes with other fitness and health centres in the city, with its 25m pool, state-of-the-art gym equipment and competitive membership options.

The centre, which is only eight years old, also boasts sports halls and gymnasiums which can be booked for various activities, as well as outdoor pitches, sports therapy, personal training and fitness classes.

The Sports Centre is not only popular with students and the public – professionals have also taken a shine to the facilities.

Plymouth Raiders and Plymouth Argyle use the sports centre for training and therapy, and during the Rugby World Cup in 2015, Marjon played host to the Namibia team.

Sports Centre manager, Simon White, makes it clear that visitors are welcome regardless of age, interest or ability.

The swimming pool has a shallow end at 0.9m to make it child and family-friendly and knowledgeable staff are always on hand to assist anyone who needs support and advice.

Classes and pool sessions have been planned with various people in mind – an all abilities cycle class is on offer, and in the pool there are sessions available exclusively for the over 60s, the disabled, adults only and females only. Simon is proud to tell us about the older client base they have in the gym, with lots of help and support available when it’s needed.

Final year sports students are stationed across the centre offering clinics, therapies and training, allowing them to gain practical experience while putting their studies into practice.

SHOULD I SAVE OR SHOULD I INVEST? Manage you money better in the new year

ll the celebrations have come to an end: and after all the parties, food and gifts, your wallet is feeling a bit thinner than usual.

By budgeting you will:

The season of giving is over and now that the new year has begun, it's time to start thinking about how you are distributing your cash and to start being smart with money.

• Know exactly how much will be coming in and going out.

It's not news, managing your money can be difficult. You think you're set with your ingoing and outgoing, but then life chucks something in the mix that completely throws it off-balance.

Taking the time to manage your money will be really beneficial. It can help you stay on top of everything financially and help you work towards your goals: whether they are short-term or long-term.

Organising your finances and understanding your lifestyle, income and expenses will help determine whether you should be saving or investing. Obviously you shouldn't be doing either if you have more important things to be doing with your money - such as sorting out debt; but managing your money can at least lay it all out for your visually and prepare you for anything, even if it's unexpected.

START BUDGETING First things first, if you want to become more organised with your money, you need to start budgeting.

It's the obvious solution, but it's the best way of creating visuals for when your money will be coming in and going out.

Create a monthly budget to stay ahead, but still take into account your weekly spendings as part of this.

FIGURE OUT YOUR GOALS Obviously whether you’re saving or investing, it has to correlate with all of your end-goals.

You may already have a rough idea of where you’d like to be in a couple of months, or even years down the line, but sometimes it’s completely forgotten how you’re going to afford these things; or you assume that you’ll just be able to afford it when the time comes. It’s better to get an idea of where this money is going to come from now, rather than finding yourself stuck when it’s time to put these plans into action.

You don’t necessarily have to figure out what your long-term goals are now, but it may be good for you to set up some short-term ones for the time being.

Short-term goals: • Start by saving, build up enough for an emergency fund.

• Set further goals depending on what you want and where you want to be - e.g. “I want to aim to save £500 a month towards a new car.”

Long-term goals: • Once your savings grow, start to invest them - you could maybe put money into your pension.

• You may want to consider investing in your long-term goals due to inflation affecting the value of cash savings.

• Budget: it will help you plan out where your money is going and coming from.

• Figure out your goals: this will help you figure out where is best to distibute your finances.

• Get organised: very selfexplanatory and ties into budgeting, but you can’t do one without the other. Make sure you have time to figure out your finances and budget.

• Save, save, save! If there’s something you can takeaway from everything you have read here today, this definitely should be it. If you save, you can invest into your future and aim for a less stressful life.

• Cut your spending: little things can make the difference. Buy the non-branded item over the branded; make your lunch for work rather than buying a meal deal or eating out. On average, workers spend about £1580 per year on lunch, think about all the other things that you could do with that sort of money!

With all these things, it’s good to remember to be flexible. Life is unpredictable and certain events may happen that can increase or decrease your income flow

eagrasses are a unique group of flowering plants that live completely submerged in the marine environment. Their closest relative on land are the Orchid family of plants, however millions of years ago these unique plants migrated back to the sea and now can spend their whole lives under the sea.

Seaweeds don’t have a fragile root structure, they have holdfast which they use to hold onto substrates and can grow in many different environments like exposed rocks and reefs, seaweeds which are algae can grow in a variety of places so we find more seaweeds around our coasts.

Seeing this habitat in the sheltered shallow coves of South Devon they can be mistaken for seaweed but they are fundamentally different, plants and seagrasses have root structures from

Seagrasses cover large areas of seabed known as seagrass meadows and these are akin to wild flower meadows, in shallow, sunlit, sheltered waters with sandy sediments. Seagrass meadows grow around the South West coast of England and West coast of Scotland and can grow down to depths around 10 metres below the surface due to availability of light.

In Britain seagrasses habitats are considered to one of the most finacially valuable and biodiverse marine habitats since they provide local communities near by with many different benefits.

These underwater seagrass meadows form complex relationship with their surrounding environment. Fish use these locations as hatcheries and nurseries for young fish, many of which grow to adults and become commercially significant species. A single acre of seagrasses can support unto 40,000 fish.

a place to shelter and grow, the canopy of the meadow is the perfect place for scallop spat to settle since there is a large surface area- and strong currents bringing the food the juvenile scallop needs.

Not only are seagrasses important for commercial important fish but they are home to some of Britains rare marine species like Seahorses.

The two species of seahorse in Britain have poor swimming ability and Seahorses hold on to the leafs of seagrass plants with a prehensile tail so not to get washed away.

Protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act Seahorses and their habitat are protected. The two species of seahorse we find around Britain are Short-snouted Seahorse (Hippocampus hippocampus) and the Long-snouted Seahorse (Hippocampus guttulatus).

These animals are very rare and if you find one or see one please notify the correct authorities so biologists can understand where these animals are living.

Out of sight out of mind, seagrasses worldwide are reported by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature to be in decline 7% a year making the habitat of the most valuable and fastest declining habitats no one discusses. The loss of the worlds coral reefs regularly makes it to our

Britain doesn’t have coral reefs but we do have seagrass beds which are calculated to be the 3 most bioproductive marine habitat worldwide.

So by protecting what is on our doorstep we can protect the hand that feeds us through protecting fish nursery grounds and we can have a global influence since seagrasses are one of the planets most effective carbon sinks.

Carbon dioxide from human activity like driving cars, is released into the atmosphere. This then dissolves into our oceans.

Plants and algae use this carbon to grow and form their bodies and the carbon is stored in our oceans, this is called Blue Carbon since carbon is stored in the planets blue spaces.

Seagrasses store this carbon (sequestration) in the sediments and this unique group of plants can sequester carbon 35 times more efficiently than tropical forests. Seagrasses worldwide are being recognised as a significant climate change combatant.

Seagrasses are home to a rich variety of animals included protected species in Britain and animals like Dugongs and Turtles in warmer climates overseas.

They provide the communities close to them with multiple benefits for example productive fishing grounds.

They store huge amounts of carbon and quickly so why are these crucial habitats in decline so quickly and why do few

people talk about them?

These sites fall out of the publics attention since they are the areas few want to discuss, they are the ugly duckling of marine conservation.

Conservation of the habitat is a complex issue but with the allocation of Marine Conservation Areas around the South West-for example Whitsands Bay, Eddystone Reef, Plymouth Sound and Torbay, these vital habitats are being recognised.

Where these habitats are found in protected areas, efforts are made to halt the decline and try and allow these areas to grow back to good condition returning the lost benefits.

There are efforts to try and grow these plants and replant areas that have been lost. Seagrass beds are like the canary in the cage for coastal waters, if we’re losing seagrass beds around our coasts this indicates our coastal waters aren’t doing too well either.

The dangers and reasons for loss include water quality: coastal communities should think about what they put down the sink and flush down the toilet.

Unsustainable fishing methods: These tear up the fragile plants and then they find it hard to grow back, you can help by always buying sustainable sourced fish.

Disturbance from boat users visiting the sites and anchoring with poor technique: if you visit these location spare a thought for the impact you may have on the seabed.

The biggest issues facing this habitat are that people are unaware of where these habitats are and how important these special places are to the fish community and the coastal community surrounding them.

Aquatic plants are some of the fastest declining species and habitats on the planet and if we are to protect something so significant we are in a hard place with marine conservation.

We need to understand that our seas have an an influence on us and we have an influence on our seas.

HEALTHy It’s the start of a new year, and many of us look to be a little more health concious after over indulging at Christmas. We round up some of our favourite tasty, low calorie meals perfect for that January health kick!

chilli stuffed peppers with feta topping 288 calories per serving 2 large peppers, halved, deseeded but stalks left on, 1 tsp ground cumin, 1 tsp ground coriander, 400g can chopped tomato, 1 red onion, halved and sliced, 1 garlic clove, finely grated, 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped, 1 small aubergine, cut into small cubes, 220g can kidney beans (don’t drain them), small bunch coriander, chopped 1 large egg, 25g low-fat feta cheese, finely grated, 50g low-fat fromage frais, 2 handfuls rocket, lime wedges ONE Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Place the pepper halves in a shallow baking dish, skin-side up, and roast for 1520 mins.

TWO Meanwhile, tip the spices into a pan and warm briefly to release their flavour. Tip in the tomatoes and stir in the onion, garlic, chilli, aubergine and kidney beans with their juice. Cover the pan and cook for 20 mins, stirring occasionally. Try not to add any extra liquid; the mixture should be quite dry. Stir in the coriander.

THREE Meanwhile, beat the egg with the feta and fromage frais. Turn the peppers over and pile the aubergine mixture into each one, packing it down as much as you can. Top with the feta mixture and return to the oven for 10 mins more until the topping has lightly set. Don’t worry if some of it flows off, as it will just set in the

asparagus and new potato frittata 310 calories per serving 200g new potatoes, quartered, 100g asparagus tips, 1 tbsp olive oil, 1 onion, finely chopped, 6 eggs, beaten 40g cheddar, grated, rocket or mixed leaves, to serve ONE Heat the grill to high. Put the potatoes in a pan of cold salted water and bring to the boil. Once boiling, cook for 4-5 mins until nearly tender, then add the asparagus for a final 1 min. Drain. two Meanwhile, heat the oil in an ovenproof frying pan and add the onion. Cook for about 8 mins until softened. three Mix the eggs with half the cheese in a jug and season well.

Pour over the onion in the pan, then scatter over the asparagus and potatoes. Top with the remaining cheese and put under the grill for 5 mins or until golden and cooked through. Cut into wedges and serve from the pan with salad.

egg and rocket pizzas 327 calories per serving 2 seeded wraps, a little olive oil for brushing,1 roasted red pepper, from a jar, 2 tomatoes, 2 tbsp tomato purée, 1 tbsp chopped dill, 2 tbsp chopped parsley, 2 eggs, 65g pack rocket, ½ red onion, very thinly sliced ONE Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Lay the tortillas on two baking sheets, brush sparingly with the oil then bake for 3 mins. Meanwhile chop the pepper and tomatoes and mix with the tomato purée, seasoning and herbs. Turn the tortillas over and spread with the tomato mixture, leaving the centre free from any large pieces of pepper or tomato. two Break an egg into the centre then return to the oven for 10 mins or until the egg is just set and the tortilla is crispy round the edges. Serve scattered with the rocket and onion.

January is here, it’s time to kickstart those resolutions!

f you’re still struggling for a New Year’s resolution for 2019, you can never go wrong with starting with the basics.

Perhaps you are looking to start the year by changing your eating habits, or maybe you’ve joined a gym/fitness centre and have no idea where to start. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there - and there a plenty of ways of getting into a routine that works for you.

With all these things, you have to remember that it’s not just a new diet or a new exercise regime that you are going to fit in around what you are currently doing, it’s a lifestyle change.

A lot of people view healthiness as eating ‘bland’, low calories foods and spending hours on a treadmill; but it just doesn’t work like that.

Remember that fitness isn’t a short-term fix. Nothing will get you completely toned and fit in a month. It takes patience, time, and it definitely shouldn’t be something that you dread every single day.

It shouldn’t stress you out (in fact, it should do the exact opposite!), it should be enjoyable, yet challenging at the same time. It should be filling foods that give you energy and fuel your body. And you must always remember that if something is working really well for someone else, that doesn’t mean that it will work for you.

Everyone is different: some see results quickly, some will take longer. Nobody is the same and that’s very important to remember.

Now that may sound quite daunting at first, but it will work for you much better both physically and mentally in the long run.

For example: if you just carry on with your regular day-to-day life but then decide that you’re going to start a new diet and then also do a thirty minute exercise per day on top of this, to begin with it doesn’t seem like much at all. But as you go on there will be times where you suddenly can’t fit in your daily exercises, or you don’t have time to prep a healthy meal before work; and then before you know it you’re back to normal because it’s easier than trying to add these new things on top.

If you approach it this way; as something extra added onto your already pre-existing routine - you are almost guarantee to fail every time.

Tips on how to keep up a healthy lifestyle: Don’t restrict yourself - A lot of people fail these diets because they tell themselves “I can’t eat this or that, only small, low-calorie foods.”

When the truth is, that isn’t actually healthy for you at all. Now you shouldn’t go to the opposite end of the spectrum and over indulge, but don’t tell yourself that you can’t eat something because there shouldn’t be boundaries on what you eat. Just always remember that you can eat that McDonalds and not feel guilty, because one time isn’t going to hurt.

Don’t count calories - This is where people go wrong all the time! The thought process behind it is that if you eat less calories, you’ll lose weight and becom e healthy - and you may lose weight- but you definitely won’t become healthy.

What will happen is that you will feel very fatigued and exhausted, and then won’t have any energy to workout: that’s a bit contradictory to what you’re aiming for isn’t it?

What you want to be looking at are the macronutrients of what you’re eating. There’s loads of information about this online that can properly aid you in your fitness journey.

Enjoy what you’re doing! There’s no point doing things if you’re not enjoying it! If going to the gym five times a week isn’t doing it for you, DON’T DO IT. There’s so many ways to exercise your body and make it work for you.. There’s swimming, fitness classes, rock climbing - the options are endless!

This month is Veganuary, where the aim of the month is to eat vegan all throughout January. This means no meat, no dairy products and eggs, essentially nothing that comes from animals.

Veganuary launched in January 2014 in the UK. They are a registered charity that encourages people take on a vegan diet throughout January.

The whole month is dedicated to changing attitudes towards veganism. They aim to help support anyone who is wanting to transition into veganism, or to just provide the right information for those who want to know more about a vegan diet/lifestyle.

Campaign organisers say that following a vegan diet - even if only for a short period of time - can have a lot of benefits, not only for health reasons but also for environmental reasons.

The charity says that going vegan can reduce obesity, lower blood pressure, and help to reduce the risk of other health issues such as diabetes and heart disease. They also state how it has a more positive effect on the environment than it would if you were to give up your car.

his year, Cervical Cancer Prevention Week is focusing on reducing the risks of the disease through screening. Despite the 5 minute smear test preventing up to 75% of cervical cancers, 1 in 4 women do not attend this potentially life-saving appointment.

Cervical cancer prevention week is run by Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, and runs from Monday 21st to Sunday 27th of January.

With Plymouth cited as one of England’s lowest areas of uptake by the NHS, we look at why screening is so important.

In 99.7% of cases, cervical cancers are caused by persistent high-risk human papilloma virus (HPV) infections. HPV is a common virus transmitted through skin to skin contact in the genital area; with around 80% of sexually active adults picking up an infection at some point in their lives.

However, for a majority of women, this doesn’t result in cervical cancer.

During a life course, a woman’s cervix also undergoes many natural changes and, in rare cases, these changes can see the cells lining the cervix become cancerous.

Fortunately, cell changes in the cervix can be detected at a very early stage and treatment can reduce the risk of cervical cancer developing.

Cancer of the cervix often has no symptoms in its early stages. If you do have symptoms, the most common is unusual vaginal bleeding; which can occur after sex, in between periods or after the menopause. Other symptoms of cervical cancer may include pain and discomfort during sex and an unpleasant smelling

vaginal discharge. While these symptoms don’t mean you definitely have cervical cancer, they should be investigated by your GP as soon as possible.

As with any cancer, it is best to catch the disease early, making it important to get all potential symptoms checked out.

Every year, thousands of women between the ages of 25 and 64 are invited to cervical cancer screening appointments across the UK. You will receive a letter in the post, asking you to book an appointment at your doctors surgery and you can ask to have a female doctor or nurse if you prefer.

One in three women miss their smear test appointment due to embarrasment.

The screening test itself is simple; a small sample of cells from the cervix is collected and checked under a microscope for abnormalities. While some women find the procedure a bit uncomfortable, for most it’s not painful - the key thing to remember is to relax, as the process takes just 5 minutes and could save your life!

Within 2 weeks, you should receive your results from the lab; 95% of results will be normal and for the small percentage that aren’t, the vast majority can be treated very easily and will never develop into cancer.

Despite these statistics, almost half a million young women aged 25-29 did not attend their cervical screening last year.
