Attention business owners E

Make sure you have happy, productive employees and customers who keep on coming back to do business with you time and again

very successful business owner understands that productive staff are essential to running a healthy business, because high productivity means higher profits. And every successful business owner knows that happy customers are essential to the long-term success of the business. Satisfied customers are more likely to do business with you again, whereas dissatisfied customers are likely to take their business elsewhere. To make sure employees are productive, it’s essential to make the working environment as clean and pleasant as it can be. And when it comes to giving a good impression to your customers — especially if you run a pub or restaurant — high standards of cleanli-

ness are essential. Even small amounts of dust or dirt can be enough to damage your business. But the fact is that many commercial cleaning companies just don’t come up to the standard needed to create a welcoming and pleasant environment, which is why we created a free valuable guide to show you exactly how to do that. It’s called Seven Questions You Need to Ask Before You Choose Your Commercial Cleaning Company. It gives you everything you need to make sure your business has the competitive advantage that productive staff and happy customers can bring. Here for you in tough times Christmas is a time associated with family. Adverts and television programmes depict happy families getting together for fun, food and laughter. Family solicitors know that January and February often bring an increase in the number of clients seeking divorce or separation. For some, the extended periods of being off work and in the house together, combined with stress over money or spending time with wider family, can push a struggling relationship over the brink. For others, the decision to end the relationship has been made by one or both parties before Christmas, but for the sake of children or other relatives, the announcement of separation is left until after the festive period. lymouth Food Bank is part of the Trussell Trust; a network of 428 food banks across the UK, working to tackle hunger and poverty in communities. As a network, their aim is to see more people helped out of crisis and to reduce the need for food banks in the future.

In 2016/17, The Trussell Trust’s Food bank Network provided 1,182,954 three-day emergency food supplies and support to UK people in crisis. Of these, over 430,000 went to children. The Plymouth Food Bank operates out of the Oasis Project, a community hub that offers personal support and development opportunities to the people of Plymouth. They don’t just offer food- Oasis Project can help you with a prospective job interview by providing suitable clothing, and can also offer training and education through a programme of courses. Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy, to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. A simple box of food makes a big difference, with food banks helping to prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems.

How do the food banks work? Food is donated > food is sorted and stored > professionals identify individuals in need > clients receive their food. Schools, churches, businesses and individuals can all donate food directly to the food bank, or through designated donation points in supermarkets around the city. Large collections also take place at fundraisers and charity events. Volunteers then sort and check that all of the food donated is non perishable and in date, and this is then packed into boxes ready to be given to people in need. People can find themselves in crisis at any point in their lives. In order to ensure the right people are getting the appropriate help, food bank vouchers are issued by local authorities such as citizen’s advice, health visitors and children’s centres. Basic details will be taken, and depending on your circumstances you will be offered the appropriate guidance needed to support you.

non-perishable goods can be placed in a donation point on your next weekly shop at your local supermarket. How about after the festive season is over, guaranteed every household has an influx of leftover items that will sit in the cupboards for another year. Put them to good use, and donate them to someone in greater need in the colder months of the new year. If every person reading this donated just one item, it will make a huge difference to someone in need this Christmas.

So, as the festive season is approaching, what can you do to help? Plymouth Food Bank are in desperate need of items such as long life fruit juice, tea, biscuits, UHT milk and breakfast cereals. They have plenty of pasta and baked beans in stock at the moment so these are not a priority.

If you wish to send special Christmas items such as mince pies, chocolates or puddings then please donate these no later than December 13th Donating items is incredibly easy- you don’t even have to buy them specifically. Take a look in you cupboards and chances are you will have suitable items that have been sat there for a while! As long as they are in date; tinned soup, tinned fruit and any other

Whether the budget is tight, or you just love to get crafty- there is something extra special about receiving a hand made gift at Christmas. Take a look below for some great handmade ideas, and use this as the perfect opportunity to stay at home, blast the Christmas music and get creative in the lead up to the big day!

A HANDMADE CHRISTMAS MASON JARS

CHRISTMAS COOKIE INGREDIENTS

Mason jars are a staple for anything crafty; and the festive season is a perfect opportunity to utilise this great storage alternative. The possibilities are as endless as your imagination but to help you out, we have compiled some great recipes below to make your Christmas gifts extra special.

Everyone loves baking, especially at Christmas. Fill a mason jar with the ingredients needed for their favourite cookies, cakes or sweet treats. You’re not just giving them the ingredients- you’re giving them time to unwind and relax whilst in the process of making the contents! You can include any ingredients as long as they are dry- and do not have a short shelf life.

FESTIVE SCENTED CANDLES You will need: 1/2 kilo of soy wax flakes, mason jar or regular jar, 1 wickcut to size , 30 drops of orange essential oil, 50 drops of cinnamon leaf essential oil, glue dots (optional) What to do: ● Attach your glue dots to the underside of the wick. Press this to the bottom of the jar, ensuring you push hard enough to make it stick. Make sure the wick is straight.

BROWN SUGAR SPICED SHORTBREAD You will need: 150g plain flour, 3 tbsp soft brown sugar,1 tbsp caster sugar, 1/2 tbsp ground cinnamon, 1/2 tsp ground ginger Layer these ingredients in the jar. Add a little note explaining the cooking process, and that all they need to do is add 100g of butter and mix to make a cookie dough.

● Now, you want to measure out your wax flakes. Fill your container with the flakes to about an inch or so from the top, place it into your glass bowl and then do it again. The solid wax reduces to approximately half the volume once it’s melted. So to find out how much solid wax you’ll need, simply fill the container and then double it. ● Next, you need to melt the wax. You can do this in the microwave but you can’t control the temperature as easily so it’s best to make a bain marie. ● Once the wax has cooled slightly, but is still in its liquid state you can add the essential oils. Gently transfer the mixture to your jar. ● It is important that you keep the wick upright whilst the wax hardens- you can use chopsticks or something sturdy to hold the wick whilst it sets. Give the candle 24 hours to set and then you’re done! Your candle is ready to decorate. What about using craft paper labels and tying them on with christmas ribbon?

CLASSIC CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES You will need: 210g plain flour, 3/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, 100g caster sugar, 340g plain chocolate chips, 110g dark brown soft sugar Attach a directions card with the following information: Empty contents of jar into a large bowl. In separate bowl combine 170g butter, 1 1/2 eggs and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Beat until creamy. Add to dry mixture. Drop tablespoons of the batter onto ungreased baking trays. Bake in a preheated 190 C / Gas 5 oven for 8 to 10 minutes.

You can of course use any festive essential oils. Some classic festive scents include orange, pine, cinnamon, clove bud, star anise and lemon. 2017 16 December Call OM Plymouth 01752 691007

DIY DECORATIONS If you are super thrifty, you can decorate your entire house without once having to brave the town centre for shop bought decorations! Making handmade decorations is great if you have children- it’s the perfect way to spend a chilly December day at home with the family. Most decorations can be made out of every day objects found at home.

LOLLY STICK SNOWFLAKES

FELT CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

Perhaps the easiest of all DIY Christmas decorations! All you need are some lolly sticks- (and to eat lots of lollies) and a hot glue gun. Some really strong super glue will also work well. Why not get some gold or silver paint and really jazz them up? It would be so easy to get carried away and cover the entire house in these DIY beauties.

Felt is the perfect material for making low maintenence Christmas ornaments to hang on the tree. You can buy large sheets of felt from your local craft shop which won’t cost much at all. There are plenty of Christmassy themed stencils online that you can print out for a helping hand- or go solo and get cutting! A sharp pair of scissors will ensure the edges of the felt do not fray. If you are feeling extra ambitious, you can pick up some stuffing from the craft shop to create 3D ornaments. Simply cut out two exact replicas of the same stencilstitch up half way, stuff with the cotton stuffing and stitch all the way up! These will stay safe when packed away in the attic and are guaranteed to look good on the tree year after year.

HAND MADE BEAUTY PRODUCTS PAINTED PINECONES Pinecones are everywhere at this time of year. Why not put them to good use as an alternative to glass baubles? Perfect if you have young children or mischevious pets. You can simply dip the pinecones in brightly coloured paints and attach a string to the top by pushing a pin through the pinecone. If you have more time, and fancy getting more intricate- you can paint the tips of each spike- and cover with some festive glitter. Guaranteed these will create a statement look for your tree this Christmas.

GLITTER PASTA GARLAND Another great activity for families with young children! This DIY decoration requires three ingredients- pasta, glitter and string! Of course, ribbon pasta would work the best. Set down some newspaper as this could get messy. Cover the pasta in some strong glue and sprinkle over some festive glitter. Once the pasta has dried, tie some string around each piece to create a garland. You can even tie on some christmas ribbon for that extra festive touch. This small but effective addition would look great across the fireplace, or even wrapped around a tree!

You don’t have to spend a fortune on expensive beauty products. There are some great home made recipes for everything your skin needs in the cold winter months- that can easily be made at home.

CANDYCANE BATH BOMBS You will need: ½ cup olive oil or liquid coconut oil, almond oil or grapeseed oil, ½ cup cornstarch, 1 cup citric acid, 1 cup baking soda peppermint essential oil, moulds of your choice What to do: Mix all of the dry ingredients together and add 10 drops of the peppermint essential oil to the half a cup of oil and mix everything together, it should have the consistency of wet sand. Spoon the mixture into the moulds and press down firmly. You can top with some decorative elements such as candy cane sweets! Place them in a jar for decoration.

WHIPPED GINGERBREAD SUGAR SCRUB You will need: 1/2 cup light brown sugar, 1/2 cup coconut oil, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger, 5 to 8 drops gingerbread fragrance oil Combine sugar and coconut oil in the bowl of a stand mixer and beat with a paddle attachment until a fluffy paste starts to form. Scrape down sides and add in vanilla, spices and fragrance oil. Beat on low until spices work their way into the mix, increase to medium speed and beat for 30 seconds or until light and fluffy. Transfer to a jar and seal with a lid. Dress it up if giving as a gift, with a small wooden spoon and a handmade gift tag.

Health and Fitness

At the moment, it’s all hands on deck for the Christmas period- it’s such an exciting time of year that we hardly have time to think of anything else. After the festivities are over, the beginning of a New Year is a great time to better yourself and set realistic goals for the future. Some may say that December is too early to start thinking about resolutions, but whether you commit to being physically or mentally stronger in 2018, to quit smoking or to stop biting your nails; these things don’t just happen overnight, so early planning is key!

I

n the following section, we have compiled some great local companies that will motivate you into getting fit, healthy and happy in 2018.

This month, we met with Ben Hay and Ben Wadham at Imperium Gym- to talk about their impressive business growth in an astounding short amount of time. Turn to page 23 to read their story and for an exclusive offer.

History of the New Year Resolution The ancient Babylonians are said to have been the first people to make New Year’s resolutions, some 4,000 years ago. They were also the first to hold recorded celebrations in honor of the new year— though for them the year began not in January but in mid-March, when the crops were planted. There are lots of local companies in and around the city that will give you the opportunity to really go for your resolutions when the time comes; and we think that to get ahead of the game, thinking about this now could really improve your chances of being successful.

20 December 2017

If you are looking to start up something new and exciting, Lemon Frog Fitness offer great salsa, tango and jive classes to really get your groove on in the New Year. Marjon are offering a great deal on their membership so take a look and snap this up if you are looking to get fit.

A resolution is personal to you; it is your goal for yourself. Clip n Climb is a great alternative way to get fit and test your skills. Check out their exclusive voucher for a free ticket on the daring leap of faith or the drop slide. Why not make a day of it and take the family for a fun day out before the mad Christmas rush.

Call OM Plymouth 01752 691007

Not all resolutions are about physical fitness. Mental health can be just as challenging; and a new year is a great opportunity to rid yourself of negative influences and have a brighter outlook on life. Claire Batten is offering an hour free trial for her counselling therapy and coaching services for the modern day woman, exclusive for December. Nutrition goes hand in hand with any fitness resolutions. Many of us don’t have the time in our busy schedules to fit in a planned food shop; so why not take advantage of Riverford’s 100% organic veg box delivered straight to your door. mperium Gym has only been in operation since March this year, but it is already going from strength to strength. After speaking to Ben Wadham, Ben Hay and Anna- There is no question that the gym’s success has derived from such a strong, ambitious and close knit workforce driving it forward.

IMPERIUM PLYMOUTH Two men, one name and a passion for fitness Imperium is a one of a kind facility, with the ethos that absolutely everyone is welcome. Unlike most gyms, The two Ben’s strive to create a fun and friendly atmosphere with a strong community spirit. It’s not just about the facilities on offer, it’s the promise that you will receive a quality, tailored experience surrounded by like minded people who want to see you succeed. So how did they get here? As an ex Royal Marine PTI, Ben Wadham tells us that he decided to join at the age of 18 because further education wasn’t an option for him. Serving for 10 years in total, Ben was a soldier specialising in the signals area. “In the last four years, I became a physical training instructor; basically taking the recruits through from week one and turning them into a Royal Marine by week 32”. Eventually, the job started to take its toll, and after falling out of love with soldiering, Ben started to question his career path. “I left in September 2014, I knew it was the right thing to do”. Ben had numerous qualifications including a degree in

strength and conditioning, so he stuck to what he knew and worked as a Personal Trainer at a local Crossfit gym. Ben Hay- the operations manager for Imperium; has had a wealth of previous positions giving him a rich skills set. “I had worked in the care sector for a number of years, media and marketing and distribution as well. My history is a bit sporadic!” Ben tells us he has a passion for fitness, and enjoys board sports such as surfing. However, a serious shoulder condition meant a dramatic decline in mobility, resulting in grade 4 arthritis. “I had a go at Crossfit to try and gain some of my mobility back, I liked the whole ethos. I was lacking a lot of motivation at the time- getting back into something is always the hardest part”. Ben found that being in a positive environment doing something he loved really helped- and this is how he met (the other!) Ben. The pair had a lot of similarities, and it soon became apparent that they also shared the aspiration to run their own gym. After a chat over a takeout Costa, and Ben Wadham building a business plan with his wife, Laura- the goal was set and the dream was put into motion.

“It was two months from the initial conversation to delivery. It was then 7 months from our first pop up gym to our premises now”.

Ben Wadham and Ben Hay

22 December 2017

Utilising a spare unit that Ben Hay had at the time, they opened their first pop- up, 1000 sqft fitness/ strength and conditioning gym in May 2016. Having served in the military and through his extensive Personal Training experience, Ben Wadham brought forward a loyal clientele- the opening week saw 80

members join and a cap of 100 within just the first month. Having such a strong start to a business is certainly an impressive feat, and this was done purely through word of mouth and recommendations from friends.

Quick success meant that an expansion was on the cards, so with the help of friends and family, the foundations went down for a brand new purpose built facility. Ben Hay took on the role of project manager, calling upon skills from his previous employment; and tells us there were a lot of stepping stones to the process. The unit was originally going to be four separate entities, but the pair bought the entire space and built the internal structure themselves.

The main aim was for it to be holistic and inclusive. The entire space incorporates a functional fitness area and body building suite, male and female changing rooms, a sauna, onsite parking and a uniquely styled café named The Hive. Speaking to Anna- who runs The Hive Cafe, she tells us the idea behind the name is that is it a hub- a place for people to hang out. And of course, coffee gives you that buzz! The Hive serves great coffee, amazing super food smoothies inspired by Anna’s 8 years in Australia; and fantastic food suitable for any nutritional meal plan or cheat meal. The Hive has a very organic feel, from the cool and calm interior to the wide range of food on offer. It is definitely a

place where you can wind down after a workout, or pop in to grab a coffee and do some work. The café offers something for everyone, from home made, macro friendly prep meals made by Anna herself- to delicious comfort food suitable for people popping in for lunch. The idea of having a café amalgamated with the gym fits in with the community ethos that Imperium stands for. Both Ben’s want everyone to feel welcome here, whether you are a hardcore fitness fanatic, a complete beginner, or have never been to a gym in your life and just want a good coffee!

Imperium has an extensive range of memberships on offer, tailored to your unique way of training In regards to memberships for their facilities, Ben Wadham explains that they are designed to be completely flexible. “There is something for everyone, I didn’t want to limit myself to just die hard cross fitters- I wanted to offer opportunities to everyone, whether you are into gymnastics, bodybuilding or just want to stick your headphones in and train!” The interior of the gym is incredibly open plan; with a mezzanine looking down over the cross fit area from the fitness suite. Ben explains it was purposely designed this way to encourage a natural progression within their internal memberships. “This way, people training with us can take the next step up and try something new. Functional fitness is a massively growing part of the industry, we want to latch on to that and grow it to the next level”. From the inception of an idea to a fully fledged, multipurpose, custom built facility in just 9 months; Ben Hay and Ben Wadham should certainly be proud of the business they have crafted. Both incredibly driven people, it is clear to see that passion for the industry and passion for each and every one of their clients will

no doubt help with their continued growth.

“We all put our hearts and souls into what we do and we truly believe that people deserve the best. Of course, we have to make it work as a business- but we strive for every single person coming through the door to say; you know what, that was worth every single penny- and I’m coming back tomorrow” The pair have exciting future plans for Imperium, starting with expansion of their current premises. Hoping to create an outdoor training area for the summer months, this will add yet another string to their bow in regards to facilities on offer. Looking further into the future, Ben Wadham hopes that there will be more than one Imperium Gym. With customer interest already coming from places like Truro and Torquay, and given their impressive business history; we have no doubt that this will soon become a reality.

Riverford are mad about veg - it’s at the heart of everything they do. Here we have some delicious recipes from our favourite farmers, as we encourage you to join them and live life on the veg. Serves 2

Baked Aubergine with spiced lamb, mint & pomegranate Aubergines are great vessels for stuffing. We’ve given the lamb a Middle Eastern style spicing and have served it sprinkled with almonds, mint and pomegranate. Good with couscous, a leafy side salad or wilted spinach. 1 large aubergine For frying and roasting, sunflower oil or light olive oil 25g flaked almonds 1 onion, finely diced 1 large garlic clove, finely chopped 300g minced lamb 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp dried mint 1⁄4 tsp smoked paprika 1⁄4 tsp chilli flakes 4 large tomatoes, skinned & chopped 1 pomegranate Handful of mint leaves, shredded Salt & black pepper

Serves 2

Heat the oven to 220 ̊C/Gas 7. Cut the aubergine in half lengthways. Score the flesh in a criss-cross pattern. Drizzle liberally with oil and season. Place skin-side up in a baking dish. Bake for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, put the almonds in a dry frying pan. Heat gently, stirring, until golden. Remove to a plate and keep to one side. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a frying pan. Add the onion and fry on a low heat. Add the lamb and fry on a medium heat to brown. Add the garlic, cumin coriander, dried mint, smoked paprika and chilli flakes and stir. Add the chopped tomatoes. Season and simmer for 30 minutes.Cut the pomegranate in half crossways. Take a rolling pin, hold the pomegranate cut-side down over a bowl and bash the skin; the seeds will fall out (most of them anyway). Pick out any pith that does fall in; it tastes bitter! Once the aubergine flesh is tender, remove it from the oven. Scoop out as much of the flesh as you can, keeping the aubergine skins intact. Add the flesh to the lamb. Stir and simmer for 5 minutes. Spoon the lamb mixture into the aubergine skins. Sprinkle over the almonds, pomegranate seeds and mint to serve.

New Potato & Chorizo Hash with Asparagus & Egg You can either fry or poach your eggs for this recipe. Use the freshest eggs for making poached eggs, so the white seals around the yolks (adding the vinegar helps with this too). 600g new potatoes, scrubbed & cut in half, or in quarters if larger Sunflower or vegetable oil, for frying & roasting 250g asparagus, trimmed Splash of sherry vinegar or red wine vinegar ½ tsp smoked paprika 1 red onion, finely diced 2 cooking chorizo sausages (200–250g), skinned & meat crumbled Handful of finely chopped parsley Splash of white wine vinegar or cider vinegar, if poaching your eggs 2 eggs Salt and black pepper

Heat the oven to 210˚C/Gas 7 or heat a cast-iron griddle pan over a high heat. Put the potatoes in a pan of salted water, bring to a boil and cook for 12–15 minutes, until tender. Drain and lightly crush with a potato masher or fork. While the potatoes are cooking, if you want to poach your eggs, put another pan of water on to heat to a bare simmer (no bubbles). Toss the asparagus in 1 tablespoon of oil in a baking dish. Add a splash of sherry or red wine vinegar, the smoked paprika and season with salt and pepper. Roast in the oven for 8–12 minutes (depending on the thickness), until tender. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a frying pan. Add the onion and cook slowly for 10 minutes to soften without colouring. If it starts to catch, add a splash of water and reduce the heat. Add the chorizo, increase the heat slightly and fry for 4–5 minutes, to cook the chorizo through. Stir in the potatoes and warm through. Stir in the parsley and season to taste. If poaching your eggs, add a good splash of vinegar to the simmering pan of water. Crack the eggs into individual ramekins or small bowls. Use a spoon to swirl the water so it looks like a whirlpool. Gently drop the eggs into the water, one at a time, and poach for 3 minutes. Alternatively, fry the eggs in a little oil to your liking. Sprinkle the eggs with a little extra salt before serving on the potatoes and asparagus.

BEATING YOUR NEW YEAR’S FITNESS FAILS Start thinking about your New Year’s resolutions now and you will be more likely to succeed with a well thought out plan of action. Achieve your fitness and health goals in the New Year with Plympton based Personal Trainer Emma.

A

s we make our way into the brand new year, most people will start to make a list of all New Year’s resolutions they would like to achieve in 2018. A recent Nielsensurvey has shown that a staggering 37% of people list getting fit and healthy as their number 1 resolution, followed by 32% wanting to lose weight. So by 2018 we should all be fit and healthy right...not according to research by the University of Scranton which suggests that just 8% of us will achieve our New Year’s goals! So with 92% of us set to fail, how can we avoid the mistakes we made last year and finally achieve that healthy lifestyle?

like you didn’t do the best you possibly could.

“One of the biggest mistakes that most people make is setting an unattainable goal” Take Baby Steps, Set Up Mini Goals Change one small thing at a time – try setting yourself mini goals throughout the year that will help to achieve your main goal. If you’ve not run before and you’re

planning on running a marathon then it would be a great idea to start by training for a 10K. Creating mini goals will help reaching your final goal a much more attainable task.

Plan Ahead - Be Prepared “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail”. One of the biggest reasons for people failing to hit their goals is a lack of planning. If you know that the staff canteen holds treats you can’t say no too, or you know that you’ll be working late and won’t want to

Be Realistic - Create Attainable Goals One of the biggest mistakes that most people make is setting an unattainable goal. Think realistically, are you really going to drop a stone in January or get up at 6am and go to the gym every day? The answer is probably no. Set a goal you know that YOU can achieve whilst still living your life and hold yourself accountable for what you want to change. Setting an unachievable goal only sets you up for failure, and in turn will make you feel

Chiropractic for Fall Prevention in these senses. Our eyesight and hearing declines, our muscles become weaker, and we are more likely to develop stiffness, or even arthritis in our spines. So, if one sense declines, we are more reliant on the others. In New Zealand, Dr Haavik has been looking at the role chiropractic may have on balance and fall prevention. They recruited a group of volunteers over 65 and split them into two groups. One group received chiropractic care and the other didn’t. To begin with, both groups carried out the same tests, to establish a baseline, one group carried on as normal, and the other received chiropractic care over a 12-week basis. The chiropractic care, focused solely on spinal manipulation.

Jon Cook (Chiropractor)

T

he implications for those over 65 who have a fall can be tremendous, not just in terms of physical injury, but the psychological impact they can have on the person, and their family.

Besides reducing and removing hazards from around the home, ensuring any walking aids are adjusted to your height for effective use and regular exercise, there may also be one other effective method for reducing the chance of a fall. Chiropractic.

Recent research carried out in New Zealand, under Dr Heidi Haavik has illustrated how chiropractic may help with fall prevention.

This study suggests that those over 65 who receive chiropractic care, are much less likely to have a fall than those that did not have chiropractic care.

In its 2014 report, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which provides guidance and advice on how to improve health care in the UK, revealed that 5% of falls in older people living in the community result in a fracture or hospitalisation. Almost all – 95% - of the UK’s 86,000 hip fractures per year are the result of a fall. The report defined a simple fall as one “occurring as a result of a chronic impairment of cognition, vision, balance or mobility”. Yet Age UK has described falls prevention

exercises for older people as “patchy at best”. The charity highlights recent statistics which show that falls and fractures in people aged 65+ accounts for four million hospital bed days in England alone and that the healthcare associated with fragility fractures is estimated at £2 billion a year.

Injurious falls is a leading cause of accident-related mortality in older people and after a fall, there is a 50% risk of reduced mobility.

A fall also destroys confidence and increases isolation, with many older people too scared to leave their homes for fear of another fall. A big reason behind the gradual drop in co-ordination among older people is a decline in the way the nervous system works. In a healthy system, small joints in the spine interact with the nervous system to send the correct messages to the brain – which is where chiropractic care helps. If you are considering how chiropractic care may help, you may wish to take advantage of the offer shown on this page. Holt, K.R., Haavik, H., Lee, A.C., Murphy, B. and Elley, C.R. (2016) Effectiveness of Chiropractic Care to Improve Sensorimotor Function Associate With Falls Risk in Older People: A Randomized Control Trial. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics.

As we know, chiropractic is not just about lower back and neck pain, but also most importantly about the nervous system.

To stay upright we rely on a full functional nervous system. We need our eyes for vision, our hearing for sound, the cerebellum in our brains for coordination and a special function within our joints and muscles called proprioception. Proprioception is essentially a joint position sense. It is why we can move our bodies with accuracy and precision without looking at those parts. It is why we don’t fall to the ground when a light is switched off, or why you can play a piano, or type without looking at your fingers. This joint position sense is most densely found within the joints of our skeleton, and even more so within the joints of our spines.
