Extra Discounts on top brand Range Cookers at Beacon Electrical Beacon Electrical proudly serves the local area with a huge range of home appliances and fantastic customer service to match. Now entering their busiest period of the year, the team at Beacon are getting ready for some exciting sale events that you should be sure not to miss!

B

eacon Electrical have been serving the people of Plymouth and the surrounding areas for over 40 years. They are confident that they have the lowest prices in town and have a Price Match Guarantee on most top brands, including Hotpoint, Indesit, Whirlpool, Hoover and Samsung. The way in which Beacon Electrical offer a complete service has changed over the years - adapting to the customers needs over time. “We used to just sell the appliance, and after that it would be down to the individual to do the rest”. Now, Beacon Electrical offer a full range of services after purchase. “We can assist with the instillation, the delivery, and we work very closely with our gas safety installers and delivery team to ensure it’s all done properly”. This, alongside their focus on customer service is what sets Beacon Electrical apart from the big retailers. Mark explains how he has built up an incredibly good rapport with a number of manufacturers- with his main focus being price matching with all of the main online retailers. “With the main retailers the focus is on the lowest price and then you pay a lot for the services, however we know that it’s the price

the customer pays for everything that really counts. Because we’re cheaper on the extra services such as installation, we often end up being cheaper overall”. “There’s a whole lot of campaigns at the moment to shop locally and rightly so. Local businesses are shutting up; they don’t seem to be flourishing as they should be”. Mark is keen to promote the fact that people can buy locally from them. “You can come and see the product, you can feel the quality and see the colour choices and see the size all right there in front of you”. Beacon are now into the busiest period of the year, from now right through to the well anticipated January Sale.

“These days ‘Black Friday’ is a major sale event for anyone in retail. We will be planning to offer a raft of extra special discounts, which will include upto 50% discounts on selected promotion lines”. Mark suggests that any prudent shopper should look out for their adverts appearing on their website from mid-November as the exciting offers will be on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

Beacon Electrical will also be holding their annual Range Cooker “Cook Day” on Saturday 27th October. On this day, they will be offering extra discounts on top of their ultra competitive range cooker prices with Rangemaster, Falcon, Mercury, Stoves and Belling. There will be live cookery demonstrations (and tasting!) showcasing Induction hob cooking benefits, and multifunction oven cooking on their top of the range Mercury range cooker. There are limited spaces, so Beacon Electrical would encourange anyone interested to call into the Beacon Park store to discuss their potential purchases and book a place for well anticipiated event.

A well known charity within the Plymouth community- St Luke’s work to achieve dignity, comfort and choice for people affected by life-limiting illnesses, through delivering and influencing exceptional care. Professionalism, respect, compassion and integrity are the foundations on which their services are based- and the charity strives to raise funds and awareness through their shops and numerous fundraising events across the city.

birthday in 2019. Wild in Art then pitched the idea to us here at St Luke’s and it came at the perfect time. We are always looking at new and exciting ways to raise funds and this is a great way to do so”.

Looking for new ways to help raise the £4.2 million required each year, St Luke’s are working in partnership with Wild in Art and Andersen Press to bring well known character Elmer to life on the streets of Plymouth and the surrounding area.

“It is a really good commercial initiative, which is great not only for Plymouth and the businesses involved but to raise awareness of what we do at St Luke’s and enable us to build new relationships in the local community”.

St Luke’s Hospice are working in partnership with Wild in Art and Andersen Press to bring this mass participation, family friendly art trail to life- featuring the much loved children’s character of Elmer, by Devon born author and artist David Mckee. We speak to Emma Milford- Project Manager and self confessed ‘Elmer’s Mum’ to learn a little more about this exciting event and the hard work that is happening behind the scenes.

“St Luke’s are more than just ‘the building on the hill” explains Emma. The dedicated and compassionate members of staff saw 3531 patients last year and travelled over 66,800 miles, covering not only Plymouth but areas as far as East Cornwall, Dartmoor and the South Hams.

F

or 10 weeks in the summer of 2019, a parade of 40 fabulously colourful elephants shall be taking you on a trail around the city of Plymouth. From the hustle and bustle of the city streets to the spectacular coastline; Elmer’s Big Parade will navigate you around Britain’s Ocean City on a fun and engaging trail- all whilst raising awareness of the amazing work of St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth.

Elmer’s Big Parade is set to be a huge event for our city; bringing businesses, artists and the community together whilst also offering opportunities to create long lasting memories and make a real difference to patients and families under the care of St Luke’s.

Talking about the significance of the trail to Plymouth as a city, Emma explains that David Mckee was born and bred in Tavistock and attended Plymouth College of Art. “It’s amazing to be able to have Elmer’s 30th Birthday being brought back to his roots here in Plymouth”.

Emma, who has a wealth of experience when it comes to charity and fundraising initiatives- took on the role of project manager 10 months ago and is working hard to ensure everything runs smoothly for the well anticipated event.

“There are similar art trails happening in Ipswich and Newcastle and the publishers want to make a big splash with this, and turn the country patchwork!”

“Wild in Art are huge when it comes to art trails! They approached Andersen Press- the publishers of Elmer, hoping to do something to celebrate the books 30th

“Elmer is one of the biggest selling children’s books of all time, all over the world. Japan even has their own adult clothing range. He is hugely popular due to being so accessible to everybody.

smaller Elmer sculptures that will be designed by local schools and community groups as part of the Education Programme.

Emma tells us that anyone can enter their designs to the trail, and this makes way for diverse and exciting interpretations. “We anticipate over 100 applications after the deadline at the end of this month. From an art perspective, Plymouth is a real hub for creativity and I don’t think we celebrate it enough. This event will really put some of our local artists on the map which is a fantastic opportunity for them”. “We’ve already had one elephant designed by Brian Pollard for our launch event back in March, and I love that both well established and budding local artists can take part in this. You can have an elephant designed by someone as well known as Brian- and then on the complete opposite end of the spectrum you could have someone who has never shown anyone their art and wants to showcase their talent”. Each Elmer sculpture will be sponsored by a local business- offering a great marketing opportunity to promote their brand and a way to engage with staff, customers and the wider community. Printed maps and an interactive app will help the public keep track of where they have found an elephant around the cityoffering a unique code that they can input for a reward from the chosen sponsor. “Once you’ve found all 40 elephants you can claim a special prize so it makes for a really fun event for all ages”. Emma explains that alongside the Big Parade, there will be a bespoke trail of

As a hospice we believe talking about death and dying is extremely important. The education programme will engage with local schools and community groups to help them explore the subject of death and dying but in a creative and safe way. “25 schools from around the city will design an Elmer sculpture of their own, and when they take part, they will receive a resource pack inspired by the stories of Elmer, covering subjects such as loss, making memories and diversity. The programme will be tied to the curriculum, whilst also linking with the nationally recognised Arts Award”.

It’s really great to have the opportunity for children and adults to talk and engage in some really sensitive subjects, but in a fun and creative way. An elephant never forgets and that’s a key message for us too. We want to help people create lasting memories and at St Luke’s we are very proud that we can do this for many patients and their families.

Consisting of 40 uniquely painted Elmer sculptures, the trail will feature artwork from both emerging and established local artists. Going live on July 8th 2019, the trails will be around for 10 weeks before the sculptures are auctioned off to raise crucial funds for St Luke’s Hospice.

He’s all about diversity, celebrating being different and everyone can relate to that in their own way”.

Emma explains that at the end of the 10 week trail, all of the elephants will come together in one location for a ‘Farewell Weekend’ in October, offering the public a chance to see all the sculptures in one place and tick off any that they weren’t able to find during the trail. After this, the large Elmer sculptures will be auctioned off, with the ultimate goal to raise significant funds for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth. What is guaranteed to be an exciting and innovative event for Plymouth, Elmer’s Big Parade will not only positively contribute to the economic, cultural and social life of the city- but also enable St Luke’s to continue to provide their outstanding compassionate care.

Business Profile

Having joined Matt Cook’s commercial team, Connie is keen to get to know all of Bright’s clients better. “Joining Matt’s team gives me the opportunity to build on my knowledge and experience of helping clients with issues that they face- whether that is growing and developing their business, or ensuring that their contract terms and conditions are relevant and enforceable”. Connie became inspired to pursue a career in law after taking part in a national competition- the Bar Mock Trails; an extracurricular activity in schools all over the UK that aims to give pupils insight into the legal system. Students act out criminal cases from the point of view of advocates,

witnesses, the jury and defence- and compete against other schools in real courtrooms to work their way through to the national final. “I was always quite theatrical so I loved that we could dress up in the robes and the wig! We made it to the finals twice. This sparked my interest and I ultimately went on to complete a Law Degree at Cardiff University”.

Connie completed a three year Undergraduate degree and then went onto study the postgraduate Legal Practice Course at Cardiff University, before returning to Plymouth and undertaking 2 years of training with Bright Solicitors. 6 years of education in total- Connie is now fully qualified at the age of 24 years old.

B

eing one of the youngest qualified solicitors in the city at the age of 24- Connie is now a staple part of the modern and innovative team at Bright Solicitors after 6 years of hard work.

“Everybody has an idea of what kind of place they would see themselves working in. The environment here is just so different to your stereotypical traditional law firm- it’s not old fashioned, no men in pinstriped suits!” Connie explains that the team at Bright are young, fresh and innovative. “Our tagline says it all, modern legal thinking. I don’t think there are many law firms where you see the senior partner sitting with people who have recently joined the firm- and they are the one making cups of tea! We all work together, our office environment is very open and that’s what makes us unique”.

drafting commercial supply agreements, shareholders agreements and advising on business protection to name a few. “We also have a litigation department so we can help with debt recovery and debt collection. Our team of 7 also works quite closely with the property team here at Bright, assisting with tenant disputes and boundary disputes for example”. “Bright Solicitors pride themselves on a personal approach to client care. One thing we all find extremely important is always being able to get hold of us when we’re needed. Reception will take any calls and if we’re busy or unavailable, there is always another member of the team to take the call and help you. Your phone call will always be answered”. Connie explains that on a personal level, she feels it is important to go back to basics within customer service.

I always try to get my clients in for an initial meeting. You may never see them again but I think it’s so important to sit down, have a cup of tea and just put a face to a name! It makes it much more personal, People buy people.

S O L I C I T O R S

Bright Solicitors are an award-winning law firm in Plymouth and Ivybridge that strive to advise you on your business and personal legal issues. Regardless of whether you are a start-up or a small to medium sized company looking for help, or you are looking to secure your assets- Bright Solicitors are on hand to offer trusted, honest legal advice. Bright are delighted to introduce two newly qualified members to their Commercial and Commercial Property teams. Connie Moulding and Natalie Puckey are a reflection of Bright’s desire to recruit and retain high-calibre staff members, with a fresh and modern outlook.

Connie has already achieved so much, but explains that she would like to eventually climb the ladder within the company. “I don’t want to run before I can walk, but I think the most important thing is for me to build my reputation”. “Being new, it can be an industry that is hard to break in to. I would love to get to the stage where I am known locally for giving the best service I can possibly give, and to be associated with the great law firm serving the people of Plymouth that is Bright Solicitors”.

“I had no legal experience at this point but I went to Plymouth University to complete a Law Degree. Similar to Connie, Natalie followed this with a Post Graduate Legal Practice course straight away at the Plymouth Business School. “I did consider taking some time out to travel, but I thought it was best to continue my education whilst it was all still fresh in my mind!”

atalie completed her eighteen month training period and became a fully qualified Solicitor in February. Working within the thriving Commercial Property department, Natalie explains she enjoys the friendly and open atmosphere at Bright Solicitors.

Natalie Puckey joined Andrew Beddow’s Commercial Property team after working as a paralegal for two years, specialising in debt recovery and insolvency matters. Natalie now works on a portfolio of work for major property investors in and around Plymouth, with particular emphasis on acting for investors and occupiers in the office, industrial and retail markets. Explaining how she became interested in the profession, Natalie always aspired

After graduating, Natalie built up her paralegal experience before coming to Bright to complete her eighteen month training period. Natalie explains that within this time, she was required to sit in each department within the company for 6 months, to help her decide where she would like to specialise.

I had previous experience in litigation and debt recovery, but had never touched upon property until I came to Bright. It is a lot more varied and I like the challenges that come with working in this department. The Commercial Property team at Bright Solicitors offer advice to local and national businesses on all aspect of land and commercial property sales and purchases, which includes drafting and negotiating development agreements, option, preemption and overage agreements, refinancing and negotiating and drafting leases on both landlord and tenant matters.

Natalie explains that a lot of her personal workload resolves around lease acquisitions for retail premises – clients wanting to purchase cafes, restaurants and other establishments. “I also negotiate and draft leases, agreement for leases, licenses and have acted on hotel purchases.

Natalie joined Bright Solicitors after the company was recommended to her. “Bright is a great company. A lot of our work ethic revolves around customer care. We all work together as a tight knit team and we do a lot of social events outside of work.

to join the Police force from a young age, but became interested in Law after completing an A level in the subject at Truro College.

“These events are great to involve new members of the team. We keep our social media channels up to date with what we get up too outside of the office- I think that is really important as it makes us more relatable as individuals”. Natalie explains that after taking 10 years to qualify in a profession she feels passionate about, it is great to be involved with such a well established, local company such as Brights. “It feels amazing to finally be where I want to be. I am 28 years old, so my aspirations for the future would be to work my way up within the firm to possibly become a partner”. “Client satisfaction and client expectations are of the upmost importance to us here in the office, and we get a lot of positive feedback after we reach completion- no matter how long it takes!”

Business Profile

Wyatt Brothers Funeral Directors are an independent, family run business based in Stonehouse, Plymouth. With a personal and caring service being at the top of their priorities, James and John Wyatt with family friend Richard Winfield go above and beyond to ensure your loved ones memory is honoured in the best possible way. We catch up with John to learn a little more about how the business was formed.

Based in The old Brewery Building in Stonehouse, The tight knit team of three have built the business up over the past three years, calling upon their individual experiences within the industry. John Wyatt explains that he was brought up within a Vicarage, so people calling up for funeral and wedding arrangements were commonplace for both himself and his brother.

“My father was a clergyman, and before we went off to higher education- the local undertaker approached my Father and asked if we would like to be pall-bearers to earn pocket money, I think he charged more for matching twin pallbearers rather like a pair of horses!” John said laughing.

John and his brother went off to Agricultural College after school to learn the trade as their mother’s family were farmers. However, it wasn’t long after qualifying, they both found themselves back in the funeral industry. As they missed the bereaved families a result of their caring, pastoral upbringing.

W

yatt Brothers consists of twin brothers James and John Wyatt and Richard Winfield, who are all experienced Funeral Directors offering their services to the people of Plymouth.

“It’s funny, as twins you tend to do everything at the same time. We became pall-bearers together when we were young, we went to Agricultural College together, but then we went out into the world separately. After college I went off to Oxfordshire to run a Funeral Directors there, and James went back to the undertakers we worked for when we were 16”. Sadly, the twin’s mother died when they

John Wyatt and Richard Winfield

were only twenty eight due to a short term illness- meaning that John made the move south to be near his sister in Tavistock. “This, coupled with the fact that our father also died two years latermeant that I wanted absolutely nothing to do with funerals at that point, it was too close to home”. At the age of 29 years old; John had a complete career change and spent the next 8 years working at a busy call centre in Plympton. John then took a career break, to travel and soak up everything that the South West had to offer. “After a while I realised I missed the work involved with the funeral industrytalking to families, working out what it is I can do to help them- getting to know their values and what was important to their loved one”. After working for a well established funeral care provider for over a year, John made the decision to go it alone and start up his very own businessWyatt Brothers. John invited Richard to join him after he left the services as he had known his family for many years. Whilst Richard was serving in the Royal Navy, his Father, a former Royal Marine and active Royal Marine Reserve, sadly died which sparked his interest in the funeral world.

With the focus on offering a reliable and above all- personal approach to funerals, Wyatt Brothers strive to ensure you feel welcome, comfortable and able to relax whilst arranging a personal send off for your loved one or friend.

John and Richard make an effort to rid the business of the traditional stereotypes of Funeral Directors. Wyatt Brothers decided to break the mould, with an original smart but casual look, not wearing black during the week. “Families say they find us much more approachable and love that on the day of the Funeral we are very much on parade in smart black silk Top Hats and Tails. We are both quite cheerful people and we aim to draw out happy memories whenever we can. People often leave saying that they didn’t expect to laugh so much!” Speaking about his reasons for starting up the business- John explains that he wanted to offer the people of Plymouth a quality service, at affordable prices. “I wanted to offer people a choice. I wanted them to not have to overpay, but still receive the quality service that they deserve”.

“I find that some people initially come here to price shop- and that can only be a good thing. It is so important that you are happy with the services on offer and that you ultimately get along with us as people”. “Personal relationships are key to us at Wyatt Brothers- there has to be a good relationship between us and the family because at the end of the day, we are responsible for their loved one. It is not just another funeral; they are a mother, a sister, a father, a best friend - and you must never lose sight of that”.

The benefit of Wyatt Brothers being a small independent business means that we can really take the time to focus on each and every family who comes to us for help. “Whoever answers the phone to a family, deals with them throughout the entire process- and that consistency is fundamental to me”. Friendly, approachable and amiable are just some of the words used to describe Richard, John and James and this is clearly reflected in the amount of gratitude they receive. Thank you cards and gifts fill the sideboards in the office, and their social media channels are overflowing with 5 star reviews. John explains that no matter how clichéthe most rewarding aspect for him is seeing strangers turn into friends, and giving loved ones the send off they deserve. “Of course there are challenges. You are dealing with loss, emotions are heightened and family dynamics are sometimes complicated. Everyone works together to remember what is importantand that is to honour their loved ones memory in the best way possible”.

John, Richard and James sensitively navigate the family’s needs through a free initial consultation after a loss in the family. “Our office hours are 9am-4pm, but we are effectively a 24 hour service. If there

is a death at home, or in a care home- we will bring your loved one into our care, we then arrange to come and speak to the family in the comfort of their own home or here if they wish”. Wyatt Brothers can provide bereaved families with a range of funeral options, creating bespoke packages with the help of other independent, local businesses. “We have access to willow coffins, bespoke glitter coffins, woodland burials, horse and carriage, traditional hearse- no matter what your request; we will go out of our way to ensure the funeral arrangements are exactly as you would want”. Looking to the future, John stresses that he has no intention of growing the business beyond Plymouth, as this would mean sacrificing the personal service they currently pride themselves on.

We want to remain an independent family business. We keep our families at the top of our priorities, we don’t compromise on quality or cut corners, we don’t make mistakes because we are overworked. We take time; we get to know each and every one of our families on a personal level.

Far from the cold, corporate image in many people’s minds when thinking of a funeral home- the comfy sofas, fireplace, soft lighting and sideboards overflowing with thank you cards certainly make it feel homely- and not at all a daunting place to be.

We are not sales driven people, so as a reflection of that- we are not a sales driven business.

Wyatt Brothers predominantly visit families in the comfort of their own homes, but in cases where this is not possible- the funeral home on Durnford Street is a welcoming alternative.

Having moved into what was originally the Old Brewery building in Stonehouse, John personally renovated the derelict building into their well established funeral home. ‘It was the first time I had ever wallpapered!” John laughs.

“I work into my evenings, I work into my weekends, but I wouldn’t change it. I absolutely love what I do and the gratitude you receive for the service you’ve worked so hard to provide is priceless”.

Roper James has a wealth of legal knowledge and pride themselves on their exceptional client care. Established in 2010 to specialise in Personal Injury and Medical Negligence claims, the team go above and beyond to make sure the client is at the forefront of everything they do. Having recently expanded their services to include Wills and Lifetime planning, we catch up with Tim Roper, David James and Mel Cotterill to learn a little more about the business.

T

im Roper and David James, Directors at Roper James Solicitors started up the law firm in 2010 after deciding to take a leap of faith and go it alone. Since then the 12 strong team of Solicitors, Legal Executives and administrative staff offer the very best legal services to the people of Plymouth. Tim was previously in the Police before emigrating to the Bermuda Police at the age of 21 where he served for 8 years. “After moving back to Plymouth with my wife Kathy and new baby son, I wanted a complete career change but it seemed you could not progress without a degree. I have always had an interest in the law and so I chose to read Law at Plymouth University.”

David previously served in the RAF, following which he had roles where he honed his customer relations skills which included a position of Assistant Manager at The Two Bridges Hotel. “I really enjoyed this close contact with clients and have brought this to my legal practice.”

Tim Roper, Mel Cotterill and David James

After completing their Law Degrees followed by postgraduate law school, both David and Tim began training with a local Law Firm here in Plymouth. “This is where we met each other; I was a Partner and Head of Personal Injury and David was working within the Industrial Disease Team. We came to the realisation that we wanted to branch out and offer a more specialised service relying on our expertise” explains Tim. David and Tim made the decision to go it alone and put everything on the line to start up their own Law Firm. “The first 6 months were a real mixture of excitement and dread of what happens if it doesn’t go the way we expected” Tim explains. Fast forward almost 9 years later, both David and Tim can confidently say that it was the best decision they ever made.

I am extremely proud of this firm and the people that work with us. We have a strong team of professionals able to offer the very best service to the people that need us. Roper James excel when it comes to drafting Wills and Administering Estates, contesting Wills, Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury claims; whether this be through an accident at work, asbestos exposure or hearing loss. David, who specialises in asbestos claims, explains that as Plymouth is a dockyard town there was a high level of asbestos exposure which has sadly led to a significant number of Plymothians suffering with the diseases caused by

asbestos. “The illnesses that can result from asbestos exposure can be awful”. David explains. “Asbestos was used predominantly in the 50’s, 60’s, 70s and 80’s, not only in the Dockyard but in many industries across Plymouth. The damage it causes can take years to surface, so even though the initial exposure was a long time ago, sufferers are still entitled to make an Asbestos Compensation Claim but it is important to seek advice from a specialist lawyer like me”. “What I find is that the people who are suffering from terminal asbestos illnesses have usually come to terms with the condition and their main concern is ensuring that the family they leave behind will be looked after when they are no longer around. “This selfless attitude never fails to amaze me and at Roper James we pull out all the stops to make sure that if possible the claim is resolved in that person’s lifetime so they can have peace of mind.” Roper James prides itself on its expertise in Medical Negligence Claims, whether arising as a result of a medical accident, prescription error or misdiagnosis of an illness. “Injuries as a result of medical negligence can be life changing and we are here to help you through what is often a very difficult time, both emotionally and financially, such as care needs and assistance, loss of earnings or extra treatment costs” Explains Tim. “We are here to offer guidance and

support throughout the whole process”. The team at Roper James offer a free, no obligation consultation to answer questions that you may have. The dedicated and compassionate team work hard to make sure your mind is put at rest.

As a bolt on, Roper James introduced Mel Cottrell to their tight knit team in December last year. Mel specialises in Lifetime Planning, preparing Wills, Asset Protection, Probate, Estate Administration, Disputed Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Court of Protection services.

Tim tells us that he cannot get across how much the clients appreciate Mel due to her empathy and genuine concern for their needs. “It is amazing to have someone of Mel’s calibre join our team. Everyone admires her compassion and commitment; her customer care is second to none”.

ask us questions any time and we will be happy to help” explains Mel.

Mel has over 15 years’ experience in the legal profession following a career in the banking industry. Joining the team at Roper James further strengthens the client focussed services they currently offer.

Roper James are a community minded business, regularly contributing to local charities and fundraising events. Having recently taken part in St Luke’s ‘Make a Will Week’ they have also raised much needed funds for Children’s Hospice South West.

Mel explains her focus is on offering a supportive and holistic approach and to go the extra mile wherever possible. “I sometimes deal with people who are in particularly difficult circumstances, such as coming to terms with an illness or suffering a loss within the family. It can be daunting trying to navigate your way through administering an estate and I am there to offer a helping hand”.

Tim explains how he recently donated a Field Gun to Ernesettle Community School after watching a competition take place on The Hoe at Armed Forces Day. “The Field Gun is part of Plymouth’s proud heritage. There was a Junior Field Gun competition and both teachers and students were having so much fun and thoroughly enjoying the disciplined competition”.

“The biggest challenge I face is encouraging people to realise it is better to plan now for the future rather than leave matters until it is too late. Wills, Estate planning and Inheritance Tax are not normally at the forefront of people’s minds but if it is left too late it can become expensive and a lot more stressful for those left behind.”.

“A few weeks later I bumped into the Organiser and he explained how some schools are prevented from competing as they struggle to fund the equipment”.

Tim, David and Mel offer their clients their personal mobile number for a truly 24 hour service. “If someone has a worry, no matter how big or small, they can take comfort in the fact that we are only a phone call away. Our office is in Plymouth City Centre so clients can pop in and

“I was delighted to present Ernesettle Community School with their very own Field Gun at a special assembly enabling them to compete in the competition at the Armed Forces Day back in June!” Looking to the future, Tim and David say they are excited to expand on the Wills and Probate services that Mel brings to the company. “Mel’s strength is building the Department and further strengthening that side of the business”.

Field Gun presented to Ernesettle Community School

“We pride ourselves on looking after our clients and we are committed to continue to offer an expert, compassionate and client focussed service to the people that need it the most, because at the end of the day, we are here to serve our clients. Clients are our lifeblood”. Health & Beauty

At Plymouth Chiropractic Clinic, your health is their number one priority. Based on Mannamead Road, this friendly, approachable team of professionals pride themselves on the family feel of their clinic and the welcoming, kind hearted nature of their staff. We chat with Jonathan Cook- Doctor of Chiropractic at the clinic, to learn a little more about the family practice. Jonathan Cook

The team believe that a patient responds better to their care if they know exactly what is going on with their health, and how Chiropractic may be able to help them. This belief, coupled with on site digital X-ray equipment and ongoing professional research in the field- means that they go above and beyond to exceed their patient’s expectations.

Plymouth Chiropractic is a well established family practice that has been operating in the Plymouth area for the last 45 years

healthcare profession, but struggled to find inspiration in any mainstream occupations.

effects these disorders can have on the nervous system to improve your overall health.

“I didn’t really know about Chiropractic until my dad went to visit one. I discovered more at a UCAS Open Day in Exeter, and was fascinated by its approach. After completing a 4 year course I became qualified with a Masters Degree in Chiropractic”. Jonathan also has a Licentiate member status from the Royal College of Chiropractors.

Chiropractic treatment works by correcting abnormal movement patterns within the vertebrae of the spine. Jonathan explains that this is done through a series of gentle Chiropractic adjustments, individually tailored to each patient’s specific needs across an affordable programme of care.

Originally established by Ken and Elisabeth Whittingham, the clinic has been based at the Edwardian House in its current location since 1983. All three of Ken and Elisabeth’s children are Chiropractors; Yvonne practicing in Sweden, Bruce in Australia, and Wayne Whittingham has continued the family business as the Principal Chiropractor here in Plymouth.

B

ased just a 10 minute drive from the city centre, Plymouth Chiropractic Clinic is conveniently located in Hartley- in a converted Edwardian House with its own off street parking.

Jonathan immediately admired the Chiropractic approach to healthcare; putting a patient in charge of their own health and allowing them to make decisions for themselves. “The most motivating part of my job is watching a patient’s health flourish. It’s so rewarding seeing people’s lives change. Many people end up having to stop certain hobbies that they loved, or have to restrict their normal lives before coming to see us.

Today, the Plymouth Chiropractic team consists of 5 University Trained Chiropractors and 12 friendly front of house staff.

“People think its normal that they can no longer exercise, or play with their kids- or to have to rely on pain medication to get through the day. It’s exciting and inspiring to see them regain control of their healthto see people smile and get their life back is very rewarding”.

Jonathan Cook, a Doctor of Chiropractic who has been with the business since 2009, explains that he always knew he would end up in some kind of

“The objective of any treatment is to reduce the subluxation (misalignment) with the goal of increasing the range of motion, reduce nerve irritability, improving function and ultimately improving quality of life”. “Whilst new research is constantly being published, there is a high level of research that shows Chiropractic helps with complaints such as neck pain, lower back pain, joint pain, headaches, migraines, sports injuries and sciatica” says Jonathan. A full consultation will enable the Chiropractor to ascertain whether treatment will help with a particular complaint. All five of the Chiropractors at the Plymouth Clinic, including Jonathan Cook are registered with the General Chiropractic Council and the United Chiropractic Association. The clinic has been recognised for its outstanding service by the Royal College of Chiropractors, and has been awarded both the PPQM (Patient Partnership Quality Mark) and the CMQM (Clinical Management Quality Mark).

www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

Jonathan explains that Plymouth Chiropractic Clinic also has official research status, meaning the qualified Chiropractors can conduct their own research and publish the results. As part of his continued professional development, Jonathan dedicates his time writing research papers for journals, having recently been published in Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Paediatrics.

Within the industry, new research is always being carried out so we are constantly learning. At Plymouth Chiropractic we have official research status, meaning we are able to expand on our continual professional development and produce current research for the profession.

Moving onto what you can expect from the clinic, Jonathan tells us that they aim to book an appointment within 24 hours of calling. “At the initial consultation, a patient will be asked to fill out a questionnaire regarding their current complaint and health history. “The Chiropractor will then undertake a physical examination including tests such as postural assessment, range of motion, spinal examination and orthopaedic and neurological tests”. Plymouth Chiropractic are the only Clinic with onsite X-ray facilities, allowing quick and convenient digital X-rays and radiological reports. They also utilise computerised diagnostic equipment to compliment their thorough physical examinations. “Once we have completed the initial assessment, a report is then written up and the patient will return in a few days to have everything explained to them, in black and white- with a recommended treatment plan” explains Jonathan.

Our personalised, professional service together with the friendly, relaxed and fun atmosphere will make you feel comfortable and cared for, from your first visit and throughout your treatment plan.

The team at the Clinic also host numerous events for chosen charities around Plymouth. The staff nominate a charity and do whatever it takes to raise money for good causes! Principal Chiropractor, Wayne Whittingham recently raised over £300 for the Chestnut Appeal by taking part in the Plymouth Breakwater Swim. Jonathan explains that the Clinic hopes to add another qualified Chiropractor to their growing team in the near future- further expanding the professional, personalised service they pride themselves on. “We want to continue as we are, helping the people of Plymouth improve their health through Chiropractic care”.

New Patient Procedure: What to expect On your first appointment with us we would ask you to complete a New Patient Form which covers contact details, current complaint, previous care, any operations or broken bones, and a symptoms survey. You will then be introduced to one of our Chiropractors who will have a chat with you before asking you to change in to a gown

which has an opening at the back for a full spinal assessment. During this visit we will assess your range of motion, reflexes, muscle strength and nerve sensation. If necessary we would take x-rays at this point, but only if they are needed. On your second appointment (which can be as soon as the next day) we will take the time to explain the results of the assessment, and give you our recommendations, and outline a suggested schedule of care. You will have your first Chiropractic Adjustment on this appointment. The fee for the first and second appointments are £45 each, and you will be with us for approximately an hour for each appointment. The fee for x-rays IF needed are £30 each. If needed we normally take two, one from the front and one from the side. The fee for any further appointments is £30.
