Time to put your back into Healthcare When it comes to reasons for visiting the doctor, back pain is one of the most common. It's estimated that four out of every five adults (a whopping 80%) will experience back pain at some point in their lives. It's

a problem that is affecting industry, with studies suggesting absenteeism through back pain is costing UK companies £673 per employee per year. So what are the causes and what can we do about it? Some of the reasons are quite obvious: bad posture, lengthy use of computers or tablets, and carrying heavy loads. Other contributory factors are less obvious, such as not drinking enough water and not eating the right foods.

distribution and take to school only what you need for that day. • And ladies, it's time you looked at the contents of your handbag - do you really need all those things you're lugging around with you all day? • Finally, get walking! Walking strengthens the body and helps position the spine in the natural shape it was designed for. It also helps to build up core strength, which is important in maintaining good posture.

The good news is that there are some simple things we can all do to help ourselves. • If you work at a computer, take regular stretch breaks; ensure you sit correctly and that your workstation is ergonomically right for you. • Take care when lifting - whether you're at work, doing DIY, gardening or lifting a young child or baby. • Gardeners and physical workers always use the right tools, take frequent breaks and do regular stretches. • Children - carry your schoolbags over both shoulders to prevent uneven weight

Mind Over Matter? By Barbara Burgess

Many sufferers of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) will have heard that N.I.C.E (National Institute for Health & Care Excellence) approved Hypnotherapy for its management.

Y

et the question that they, rightly, ask is ‘My IBS is very real, how can hypnosis help with that?’

I would go further to say that hypnotherapy is useful in any chronic disease and a relatively new branch of science, Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), supports that view. PNI is the study of the relationship between the brain, thoughts and emotions, and the immune system and one of its central tenets is that there are ‘measurable relationships between stressful life events & illness’. Stress, which anyone with IBS will know, can make their symptoms worse, has also been repeatedly linked to hypertension, heart disease, heart attacks, increased cholesterol, constriction of coronary arteries, ischemia and cardiac arrhythmia, shrinkage of the thymus, the spleen and the lymph nodes and peptic ulcers. There are two types of stress: Eustress, which is the good stress that challenges you and gets you motivated, and Distress, which happens when that good stress becomes too much to cope with. The body goes through distinct stages

when stressed. First is the ‘alarm phase’, which is the ‘fight or flight’ response. This would naturally occur in times when we had to deal with real danger, such as being threatened by a wild animal. It causes certain hormones, such as adrenalin and cortisol, to be released, speeding the heart rate and slowing digestion so that blood flow can be redirected to major muscle groups. This gives the body a burst of energy and strength for the ‘resistance phase’ when

“PNI is the study of the relationship between the brain, thoughts and emotions, and the immune system” you take action to ‘fight the stressor’. Our bodies are designed to cope with this type of stress and, when the threat has disappeared, would normally move into the ‘relaxation response’ during which blood pressure, heart rate, digestive functioning and hormonal levels return to their normal state. The problem is that we rarely have these real dangers to cope with in the modern world but this reaction is also activated in dealing with such things as overload at work, traffic problems, information overload or financial problems, where the ‘fight or flight’ response is not appropriate. This causes chronic stress where the

“Hypnotherapy has been shown to help to reduce the long term effects of stress by taking you into a deeply relaxed state” body goes into the ‘exhaustion phase’. This is when you can no longer adapt to the stressor and it is this stage that can result in illness. Hypnotherapy has been shown to help to reduce the long term effects of stress by taking you into a deeply relaxed state, fighting tension and triggering the natural ‘relaxation response’. Once in this relaxed state we work on changing the way you think, and the ‘stories’ you tell yourself, about your stressors. Clients generally find that their negative physical reactions can be reduced or completely removed quickly and, by continuing with Self-Hypnosis or Mindfulness Meditation, which can be taught as part of the ongoing management of stress, significantly improve their physical health as well as making life more enjoyable! HEALTH AND BEAUTY

The Makeup of Nature W

ith the consumer price of cosmetics on the increase, it’s no wonder that we have now turned to the comfort of our homes and the supplies in our pantries to conjure up natural, homemade alternatives to lipsticks and shampoos. So to save your bank accounts and to give your pamper evening an infusion of natural products, we’ve gathered a few simple recipes that are kind to your skin and hair, so roll up your sleeves and get started! By Nimra Imran

Essential Oils Shampoo:

Nourishing Lip Balm:

Honey and Oatmeal Facemask:

Your hair will thank you after this nourishing treatment of gentle shampoo with essential oils. For this you will need half a cup of liquid castile soap, a qaurter cup canned coconut milk and a quarter cup of honey.

The key for this lip balm is the amount of beeswax you include. The more you put in, the less glossy and the more firm and balmy it gets.

And last but not least, this Honey and Oatmeal Facemask is perfect for a pamper evening, leaving your skin feeling soft and refreshed.

The great thing about beeswax is that it has natural sun protection qualities. Even a little bit helps when you’re in the sun all day in the summer time!

You will need two tablespoons of ground oats, half a table spoon of fresh lemon juice and two table spoons of raw honey. Then grind the oats and in a small bowl mix them together with lemon juice and the honey.

Add in to the mix two tablespoons of coconut oil and forty to fifty drops of essential oils to make your shampoo smell yummy. Lavendar and peppermint oils are extremely popular and give your showers an infusion of freshness. Then proceed to mix all of the ingredients together in a container with a lid (or a clear plastic bottle as shown in the image). Put on the lid and shake well to combine. Shake before using and enjoy heavenly smells and equally noursihed hair.

To create this delight you simply need two table spoons of grated beeswax, two table spoons of coconut oil, two teaspoons of sweet almond oil, a chunk of red lipstick and half a teaspoon of shimmery eye shadow powder. To make the balm taste as delicious as it looks, you could also add ten drops of essential oils; peppermint is again a popular choice to use in balms. Melt all but essentail oil in a doubleboiler until completely melted and there are no more beewax flakes. Do not boil or overheat. Stir with a throw away tool like a bamboo skewer. Remove from heat and add essential oil. Using a syringe or medicne dropper, fill your lip balm containers. Let it sit at room temperature or in the fridge until hardened or opaque. And now you have a soothing, smooth lip balm with just a hint of colour and a hint of sun protection, ready to be used.

Apply to your face to create a mask, making sure its spread evenly. Leave on the skin for 10 to 15 minutes. Then remove the mask with cold water and a washcloth. This recipe makes enough for two to three treatments. Its best to store extra in the fridge in an airtight container. With these amazing recipes, you can now create your own cosmetics which are kinder to your skin and cost just as good as they look.

Asparagus, sundried tomato & olive loaf Ingredients ●100ml olive oil, plus extra for greasing ●250g asparagus spears, each cut into 3 pieces ●200g self-raising flour ●1 tbsp thyme leaves ●3 large eggs, lightly beaten ●100ml milk ●handful pitted black olives ●100g sundried tomatoes, roughly chopped ●100g Gruyère or Beaufort, grated

Method

1. Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Oil and line the

base of a loaf tin (approx 22 x 10 x 5cm) with baking paper. Cook the asparagus in boiling, salted water for 2 mins, drain, then cool quickly under cold running water. Pat dry. Mix the flour and thyme with seasoning in a large bowl. Make a well in the centre, then add the eggs, milk and oil, stirring all the time to draw the flour into the centre. Beat for 1 min to make a smooth batter. Reserve 5 asparagus tips and a few olives. Add the remaining asparagus, tomatoes, olives and two-thirds of the cheese to the batter. Pour into the tin, then put the reserved asparagus and olives on top. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Bake for 35-40 mins until the cake feels firm to the touch and is golden and crusty on top. Cool in the tin for 5 mins, then turn out and cool on a wire rack..

Q

& A Arrangements for children after a relationship breakdown. By Derek Jordan

Derek Jordan is a specialist solicitor with The Family Law Company. His specialism is settling child arrangements for parents, grandparents, or others who have an important relationship with a child. He also handles domestic abuse cases where there is a need to protect victims and children from further harm. Q - How important are the needs of children when families experience difficulties? A - When adult relationships break down there is often also an immediate, negative effect on their relationship with their children, which can be distressing for all parties. It is vital that a child’s connection with all of the important people in their life is protected, encouraged and kept free from unnecessary restrictions. Q - Will children always spend equal time with both parents? A - There is no automatic fifty-fifty sharing. The starting point is for a child to continue to have a relationship with both parents and their wider family - as long as it is safe for them to do so. It is always best if the adults can agree the arrangements, but sometimes they find it too difficult or painful to do so. I always keep the best interests of the child at the heart of all the advice I give, whilst being supportive of the client and sensitive to their own needs.

“The Family Law Company has a policy to work with clients to ensure that costs are clearly structured and explained” Q - Do I have to have a lawyer? A - You do not have to have legal advice. However, it is more likely that getting expert help as soon as possible when children are involved will mean a positive solution is reached much more quickly and with far less emotional distress. Lawyers can work as a bridge between the parties, encouraging a

“Arrangements for Children after a Relationship Breakdown” constructive dialogue in reaching a solution for you and your family whilst protecting you from unnecessary pressure and distress. Q – Is it always necessary to go to court? A - No. Wherever possible, I try to reach an amicable solution without making any application to court, as this is best for all concerned, especially the children. This includes giving initial advice to help you pursue your own discussions, advising you on other ways of resolving your problem, such as mediation and seeking to negotiate an agreed way forward for you. Q – I have heard that even if there is an agreement about children, it is not legally binding? A - We all hope that people will stick to any agreement they make in relation to arrangements regarding children, but sometimes people do not act as you would hope or anticipate, or circumstances change. As long as there is an agreement, we can help you make an application to the court to have that agreement recognised and approved in the form of an agreed consent order which must then be kept to by everyone.

Q – Can court cases be very expensive? A - The cost of legal advice can be a concern. The Family Law Company has a policy to work with clients to ensure that costs are clearly structured and explained. We make clear what work we advise is necessary and what we are actually being asked to do. It is important to us, and to me personally, to proactively work with clients to carefully manage the costs of any case.

The Family Law Company offers a free initial appointment to discuss your case and the options available to you. For more information please visit: www.thefamilylawco.co.uk email:enquiries@thefamilylawco.

Get Your Craft On ... By Nimra Imran

S

pring is finally here folks! It’s time to air out the wardrobes and bring the light in to all the dreary, dark places that winter had a hold on. There are a few things as satisfying as pulling off a successful DIY project, especially when afterwards guests ask where you purchased it from. Last Christmas, we brought to you quirky little ideas for festive DIY decorations, perfect to turn your home into a winter wonderland. With blooming flowers and warmer days ahead, it’s now time for you to roll up your sleeves and get cracking with an array of DIY projects to spruce up your home in honour of spring.

Recycle your old teacups with this quirky DIY project, perfect to hang or place in your living room. Gather any old tea cups and polish them down so they’re squeaky clean. Next, take some jute string or ribbons and loop it through the handle and tightly tie the ends together to ensure stability. Instead of hanging the teacups, you could also place them on coffee tables or as a center peice on a dining table.

are a breath of fresh air.

If you have any spare candles lying around in a drawer, gathering dust, then bring them out and using a small amount of super glue, attach them onto the side or the bottom of the cup. Or if you’re feeling brave you could even make your own candles, with numerous instructions now available online.

“this unique look will be remembered by one and all, as well as being an equally efficient method of storage”

If your cups happen to be plain, then whip out the old art supplies and brighten them up to your heart’s content. Perfect to light on a spring evening, these quirky candles

Not only are mason jars an extremely versatile method of storage, they also make for some of the most adorable decoration pieces. This project is sure to brighten up the look of any room, whether you decide to use it to store bathroom essentials, kitchen utensils or have it in the office for a unique take on stationary storage.

up to two feet long, or longer if you want to add more mason jars onto it. You will also require wood stain, picture hanging hooks, a few screws and a drill, and then you’re ready to get crafting! Firstly stain the piece of wood fully and let it dry. Next, dig out that power drill and use the drill bit to get a pilot hole started in the wood, where you will eventually screw in a hose clamp. Additionally, you will also need to make holes in each of the hose clamps using the drill. This part will require you to put a little bit of force into it, as it can be difficult to make a hole in the metal of the clamps. After you’ve drilled in the holes in both the wood and the hose clamps, line them up and screw the hose clamp into the wood until all are attached. To hang up the

wood onto your chosen space, nail in two picture hangers onto the backside of the wood. Screw the mason jars into the hose clamps and tighten to ensure the mason jars don’t slip through and shatter. And voilà! You now have your fully functioning farmhouse chic organiser. Perfect for just about any room, this unique look will be remembered by one and all, as well as being an equally efficient method of storage. Next time you indulge in a glass or two of wine or champagne, instead of putting the bottle away to be taken to a bottle bank, wash them out and leave them to

dry. Then, gather any spare Christmas lights or fairy lights and feed them into the bottles carefully. Switch them on and watch in amazement as you create lamps so deliciously quirky and luminous that you’ll never want to turn them off. This project is quick and easy and makes for a gorgeous decoration to place in your living room, bedroom or even on the patio! Whether it’s work meetings or keeping track of fantasy football, this dry erase is perfect for someone who’s always on the go. Customizable, thoughtful and useful, this project is quick and easy to implement. You will need an old collage picture frame, some scrapbook paper or colourful wallpaper, scissors and a dry erase marker. To begin with, use the backing of the picture frame and trace on the backside of your scrapbook paper or wallpaper of choice and cut it out. If possible, place a different colour or style of paper for each of the days. Next, use your dry erase marker to write down the days; each frame is a day of the week. If you are a perfectionist you may want to use a stencil to ensure that all of the letters are uniform. Now grab your erase marker and get writing as your dry erase calendar is ready for use! This can be placed in your

home office or even in the kitchen for a more efficient use. With the days getting warmer and brighter, these quick and quirky DIY projects will make your home spring ready. Not only will these projects save your bank account and prevent you from buying expenive decoration items, these DIY projects can be completed with many materials that you may already have lying around in your house! A productive way to spend your lazy sundays, it’s time to dig out the craft supplies and get creating!

Why Pensions are like Ice Cream Mike LeGassick, Independent Financial Adviser with Manning and Company, explains why the blended approach to retirement income planning could be the best choice. If you were born around 1960, you will soon be facing a pivotal decision: how will you shape your life over the next 30 years? First of all think back 30 years, to 1985 – when music came on vinyl or cassette, and the internet hadn’t yet arrived. Can you think ahead to the year 2045 and imagine what life might be like? Honestly, can any of us?! Yet thanks to the new pension freedoms which come into effect in April, that’s exactly what anyone aged 55 or over will have to do. As never before, your future is in your hands. It’s real money You may have paid into a pension scheme for years – but the money has probably come off your salary before it’s even reached your bank account, so it may never have felt ‘real’, and you may not have thought too much about what you’ll do with it. But your pension pot is real money. And from April, once you turn 55 you can get your hands on it – all of it. Yes, you’ll be taxed at your marginal rate on 75% of it, but you can have your cash in your hands if you want. This is what is suddenly making pensions exciting, and life-changing. Because the decision you make now – whether to take the cash, invest it, buy an annuity, or a mix of all three – will determine what the rest of your life could look like. Without a doubt, this is something that’s worth taking time to think seriously about. Pension Wise The government has launched a new website, www.pensionwise.gov.uk, to provide guidance on pension choices. The key word here is ‘guidance’ – the website does not provide ‘advice’ for your circumstances; and crucially it 42 April 2015

There’s also one other thing you’ll notice on Pension Wise – a phrase Flexibility for the future which appears several times: My final and most important thought “You might want to talk to a financial is this: don’t do anything now that adviser.” could limit your options in future. The website itself recognises its role we’ve agreed, looking ahead 30 Independent FinancialAs Adviser and limitations; and that a decision years is hard – so build in enough this important requires more than flexibility in your plan, and retain a ‘bit of googling’ – it needs expert, enough resources so you can personally-tailored advice. change tack later if and when your circumstances change.
