HEALTH & BEAUTY

Beautiful Lily’s Salon: Jayne Rainbow’s business venture At Beautiful Lily’s, Jayne offers a wide range of treatments ranging from simple eyebrow waxing to relaxing aromatherapy treatments, reflexology, Indian head massage and beauty therapy, all using a wide range of highly reputable products.

I

n her late teens, Jayne saw an advert in the local newspaper for an eight week introductory course in aromatherapy massage. She thoroughly enjoyed the course and, with encouragement, decided to study for a diploma in anatomy and physiology, Swedish body massage and aromatherapy. Despite battling with depression, she qualified in 2000 and continued to train as a reflexologist at Plymouth College, gaining an NVQ qualification in 2001, and going on to learn the art of Indian head massage. It was during this course that she became pregnant with her first child, but persevered and gained qualification in 2005. Having worked in various beauty salons, she decided to take some much

needed time out after the birth of her daughter and spent a year as a “stay at home mum” until a former colleague persuaded her to train in beauty therapy. She again fell pregnant during the course and again managed to finish, passing with flying colours. Desperate to get back to work she decided to work from home. A garage conversion created an ideal salon and the only question left was what to name it. With her children very much now the centre of her life, she decided to name the business after Beau and Lily. As ever, looking after two children and running a business was a struggle and Jayne found herself continually tired, stressed and once again entering the depths of depression. Following a diagnosis with M. E. in 2010, and numerous trials and attempts with antidepressants and diet changes in an attempt to increase her energy levels, she was introduced to the popular food supplement JuicePLUS+. Surprisingly, just a few weeks after taking the powdered fruit and vegetable capsules, she noticed a big difference in her moods and energy to the point where she agreed to run (and completed) the Brighton marathon, raising money for a friend’s daughter who suffers with a rare degenerative disease. She also found recovery after training was helped by taking the JuicePLUS+ complete shakes and, following such a positive personal experience with the product, also became a representative for the business.

On top of everything else, Jayne is also an ambassador for Tropic Skin Care products which are made with the finest natural ingredients to take the very best care of skin, using the products in her salon as well as selling them. She is also trained by Dermalogica but wanted a product that was more natural and more affordable. In addition to Tropic, Jayne also uses well known brands including Lauren’s Way (from the Only Way Is Essex) Spray Tan and Couture eyelashes. “I always dreamt of having my own salon and Beautiful Lily’s fits perfectly around my family life. With my low overheads, I am able to offer very competitive prices, have regular clients and thoroughly enjoy what I do. If I can help someone feel better about themselves in any way, then I feel I have done my job”. Jayne is pleased to offer all new customers a 25% discount on their first treatment at Beautiful Lily’s this December. Please call, email or visit the website to book an appointment or to find out more about JuicePLUS+ or Tropic products.

2014 – A GREAT YEAR FOR RADIO PLYMOUTH Station manager and drivetime presenter Tim Manns reckons 2014 was the best year yet for Plymouth’s local, commercial radio station. “Radio listening is a very personal and subjective exercise, and the fact that we’ve seen a dramatic growth in the number of people listening means we must be doing something right!”

S

ales manager Tricia Duff echos those sentiments. “We started the year by launching our first ever Apprentice of the Year promotion which was a huge success, sponsored by Babcock International. This was followed by our Radio Plymouth charity ball at the New Continental Hotel, where all monies raised went to St Luke’s Hospice. Jemma Jones, our promotions co-coordinator, joined the St Luke’s Hospice team and trekked Machu Picchu, raising over £5,000! A very busy spring and summer saw us at Volksfest, the Pirate weekend, FlavourFest, the Megaride and Armed Forces day. We also supported Foster for Plymouth and Adopt for Plymouth, joining them across the city on information days. More recently we launched our second Be Safe – Be Seen campaign, of which more below, and the Otter Nurseries Christmas tree competition, working very closely with local schools on both campaigns. We also successfully hosted the Plymstock Broadway Lights switch on, the Christmas Grotto opening in Drake Circus and the Barbican Christmas lights switch on. These are just a few of the community projects we have been involved with, so you can see why this year has flown by!” Events coordinator Jemma Jones takes up the story. “As the clocks went back

and the daylight hours became shorter we joined up with Plymouth City Council Road Safety and highways contractor Amey for BE SAFE BE SEEN. The overall purpose of the campaign was to remind children of the importance of being brightly dressed during the darker months. We distributed 22,000 reflective stickers to Primary School-aged children across the whole of Plymouth, to go on children’s bags and help them to stand out. With Plymouth City Council’s Road Safety Team I visited 20 schools to give interactive talks during assemblies and visited classrooms to talk about being safe and being seen and the importance of road safety. Finally, news editor Jane Atwill gives us her take on the year. “I have a confession to make. I am writing this paragraph while preparing my next bulletin, planning stories for Christmas, checking in with the emergency services and thinking about stories for tomorrow. I am also trying to eat some porridge which is rapidly going cold. It isn’t even 8am, so perhaps this illustrates that life on the news desk is pretty manic. This year has certainly been a busy one. We have interviewed David Cameron, Ed Miliband and Chancellor George Osborne during the course of 2014. We’ve covered everything from a siege in Widegates to the winter storms and Queen drummer Roger Taylor receiving an honorary degree from Plymouth University. From our offices near the Hoe, we are the only station providing news purely for Plymouth. As we look ahead to 2015, there is the small matter of a General Election. The porridge may have to wait.

“From our offices near the Hoe, we are the only station providing news purely for Plymouth.” Tim Manns, as usual, has the final say. “Our success is entirely down to the support we get from local people, both listeners and businesses, and we are here to provide the service that you require. We love hearing from you, so if you’ve any feedback please email us info@radioplymouth.com and please keep listening!

• 300g ginger nut biscuits, roughly crushed • 140g crystallised stem ginger, finely chopped • 300g plain chocolate • 100g butter, diced • 100g golden syrup

Method

1. Line a 20 x 30cm tin with baking parchment. Mix the biscuits with most of the ginger, then set aside. Melt the chocolate, butter and golden syrup in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water, stirring occasionally, until smooth and glossy. Pour this over the biscuit and ginger mixture and mix together well. 2. Deck the Halls With these creative, simple and affordable DIY decorations, Christmas has never looked so merry and bright! By Nimra Imran.

I

t’s that time of year again folks! A time for family, friends and festive cheer. There’s a whole world of decorations and do-it-yourself crafts waiting to be implemented, making your house ready for Christmas. The best way to get inspired for the coming holiday is to decorate your house and the Christmas tree. Making ornaments yourself is a great way to celebrate the festive season with the whole family, and not only does it make Christmas all the more special, these creative ideas are also affordable. So go ahead, and make your season merry and bright with these wonderful handmade decorations and ornaments.

1

These sparkling ornaments are sure to pop out against the backdrop of evergreen on your Christmas tree! Simply gather spare plastic or glass bulbs, cover them thoroughly in glue and proceed to roll them in glitter. A variety of glitter colours are sure to make your Christmas tree sparkle. Leave to dry for fifteen minutes, then take a piece of ribbon or thread and attach it onto the bottom of the bulb with hot glue. Viola! These fanciful glitter ornaments are ready to be hung on your tree.

Why not reinvent the Christmas wreath with personalised family photos, which will not only look great for the holiday season but is also versatile enough to be put on display throughout the year. Take some old family snapshots and simply glue them together in the shape of a wreath and hang anywhere in the house. Beautiful and simple, this will brighten up the look of any room!

3

Add these pretty glitter leaves onto your Christmas tree, making it shimmer and glow. Cut out two leaves, or any other shape that you desire, from a template and glitter the sides that will be facing outwards. You can also give them a base coat of paint the same colour as the glitter if desired. Create

HOME & GARDEN a single punch hole in the leaf and thread the bead through it. Then, all that’s left to do is to string a loop of ribbon through the leaf and it is ready to be hung onto your tree.

4

Mason Jar lanterns spread a rustic and vintage theme across your house in preparation for Christmas. All you require are a few empty mason jars, small pine cones, a few leaves from your Christmas tree, salt, string, candles and any other decorative materials you wish to add. Take your mason jar and place a fine layer of salt at the bottom and nestle the candle in the centre. Proceed to surround the candle with a few leaves that you have taken from your christmas tree. Then, loop your small pinecones through a piece of string and tie the string around the neck of your mason jar. Add leaves and other decorative material as desired or as shown in the picture. These mason jars look best placed on mantle pieces or windowsills and give a warm glow to any room.

5

This following project is great for a family activity. All you require are some pieces of felt fabric, scissors, fabric pencil, red ribbon, glue and pearl embellishments. However, you don’t necessarily have to use pearl embellishments, as buttons, sequins and beads will look just as beautiful. Cut out the felt fabric in the shape of a mistletoe using a template. Arrange the pearls or any other decorative material you wish to use with glue. Then, tie the ribbon onto the mistletoe and hang in doorways, landings or hallway entrances!

6

Last but not least, no Christmas is complete without a snowflake garland. This particular one also uses balloons to create a more festive feeling! Take a few sheets of plain paper, scissors, string and some white blow up balloons. Cut out different snow flake pieces by folding the paper in half and cutting geometric patterns. Then string the thread through each snowflake and tie the ends to the balloons. Let the balloons float up to the ceiling and watch your room transform into a winter wonderland. With Christmas just around the corner, these creative and fun do-it-yourself projects are an excellent way to get into the holiday spirit. All it takes is some glitter and beads, candles and ribbon to create ornaments that will be the shining stars of this merry season!

Will Christmas force you into Bankruptcy? Anyone can struggle with money, it is a common problem many people worry about. You don’t need to be in business to run up loans and credit card debts just to survive. The availability of credit has made the problem a lot worse as it has been possible for the level of debt to spiral as new loans are taken out just to service old ones.

A

ccording to the Daily Mail, over 1.4 million people will use ‘Pay Day Loans’ to fund their Christmas spend this year, with the average person spending over £500. But what happens when the Christmas Decorations come down and the bills start to arrive? If you find yourself struggling with debts, your first port of call for advice is the Citizens Advice Bureau (“CAB”) or failing that someone like us - a firm of Licensed Insolvency Practitioners (“IP”s). Even though we may not be able to help, we will point you in the right direction. Usually, we will try and work out what options you have left from the following:

Bankruptcy This is a very effective way of writing off all your debts and wiping the slate clean. You might think it has a stigma and is a bad thing to do, but actually most people who make themselves bankrupt say it is

liberating. You can call your local County Court who will post you the forms to do it. Unfortunately you do have to pay for the privilege (about £700) but it stops the credit card and loan companies chasing you. The usual reasons for not doing it are if you own your home or have a certain job that means you cannot be made bankrupt.

Individual Voluntary Arrangement (“IVA”) IVAs are formal alternative procedures to Bankruptcy, usually used where people have equity in their homes that they want to protect from Bankruptcy. They can be a very useful way to freeze the interest and wipe out any debt you cannot afford to pay. They can also be good for creditors, because the costs are usually lower than Bankruptcy so creditors tend to receive more money back. You need a licensed IP like me to help you with an IVA.

Debt Management Plan (“DMP”)

Pictured: Insolvency Practitioner Lisa Thomas

28 December 2014

This is an informal arrangement where you basically agree with your creditors to freeze the interest and pay them back a small monthly amount. You can arrange one of these yourself with the help of someone like CAB, or you can ask a firm to do it for you. Although, some firms will charge for this. The issue with DMPs is that they don’t really solve the problem, they are just

Call Oracle Magazine 01752 691007

deferring it, but it does suit some people.

Debt Relief Order (“DRO”) A DRO is a scheme set up by the government. Certain criteria apply to be eligible to obtain a DRO, but in a nutshell it applies to people who cannot afford to pay their debts and who have: • Debts of less than £15,000 • A disposable income of less than £50 per month • Gross assets worth less than £300 A DRO application (costing £90) is made to the local Official Receiver and if the application is accepted, a DRO will wipe out all of your unsecured debts when you are discharged from the DRO after 12 months.

Conclusion This whole area is a bit of a minefield and there are some unscrupulous firms out there trying to sell you something that earns them a fee but may not be right for you. If in doubt take advice from CAB or a licensed IP like me. Feel free to call me if you want any advice and I will try my best to help you. Call 01752 786800 to arrange a free initial meeting. Get set for fantastic comedy at this year’s pantomime Pantomime stars Bobby Davro, John Challis, Chico and Jeffrey Holland and Daisy the Cow come to Plymouth for this year’s spectacular Theatre Royal pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk.

H

eading the cast of this year’s Panto as Simple Simon is comedy and television star Bobby Davro, who returns following his hugely-successful season as Will Scarlet in Robin Hood last Christmas. Bobby is well-known for his illustrious television career which has seen him present his own series Bobby Davro on the Box, Bobby’s Sketch Pad, TV Weekly, Public Enemy Number One, Rock With Laughter and Run the Risk, and host 65 episodes of Winner Takes All. He also appeared in EastEnders playing the loveable rogue Vinnie Monks, has donned skates on Dancing on Ice, and last year appeared on game-show Your Face Sounds Familiar. John Challis will play the panto villain Fleshcreep. John’s theatre and television work spans fifty years, initially in theatre with companies including the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre. His television career has seen him play Boycie in the legendary Only Fools and Horses and then in his own spin-off series The Green Green Grass, which ran for four years. Simple Precautions for Cyber Security Once the preserve of governments, large corporations and spies, cyber security is now important to everyone. The importance to you can be seen by asking yourself the simple question, “what would I lose or suffer if somebody accessed my email/computer/phone?”

L

uckily, proper security isn’t difficult to achieve, following a few simple rules and employing basic security practices can keep you relatively safe, hopefully leading attackers to move on to easier targets. The first thing to do is to think about your passwords and what devices have them. Any computer or especially a phone (as they are easier to steal) should have

10% OFF

a password configured to ensure that anyone physically holding the device can’t instantly access all of your personal (or business) information. For a phone even a simple 4 digit passcode will go a long way to dissuading people from putting the effort in to access the device. For a computer, email, or website account the best thing nowadays, for various technical reasons I won’t go into, is to use a passphrase rather than a password. A passphrase is what it sounds like, a phrase rather than a word which is often easier to remember if you choose something significant to you, for example “ILoveMyDogCalledRascal”. The final thing you might want to consider for your important accounts is called 2 factor authentication (2FA) which is a generic name for using 2 methods of authentication together. Usually this would be something like a card reader for a bank

Sam Foley - Managing Director at Unified Technical Solutions Ltd

account or a text message sent to your phone with a unique confirmation code every time you log in on a new device, in addition to your already existing password. 2FA is an excellent way of ensuring even more security and is worth turning on for accounts that are important to you. Follow these few simple precautions and your cyber life will become a lot more secure!

Are You Paying Too Much For Your Life Cover? Buying a life insurance policy from a bank or building society could cost you thousands of pounds more than it should, and the chances are if you’re reading this you have some sort of policy.

UK so the odds are heavily stacked in our favour. It is your one policy versus every other provider and as a result there is a massive chance that we can secure you a cheaper premium. What are the chances that your policy is THE cheapest available?

T

What surprises me is that people try to cut their internet costs and their utility bills, but seldom think of their life and critical illness cover. Yet it’s just as easy to switch and make savings! An IFA can check the whole of the market, and either find the savings for you, or confirm that there are no savings to be made (so you won’t lose sleep wondering if you are paying too much!).

As Independent Financial Advisers we have access to every insurer in the

The amount you pay each month depends on whether you are a smoker, your age at the start of the plan, the size

he difference between what banks charge and the best and worst insurer’s prices for the same cover, over the term of the policy, can run to many thousands of pounds!

of the sum assured, the length of the term and, your current state of health and ultimately, the provider you opt for. Rates have fallen in recent years thanks to increased longevity and greater competition in the life insurance market. The savings you could make by switching could pay for your Christmases for many years to come. Please call me to make sure you aren’t paying too much.
