Do You Need a Life Coach? We all want to lead fulfilling lives and feel like we are achieving something. Life Coaching can be a beneficial way to help you reach your goals and give you the encouragement and motivation to get there, making a positive impact on your life. So what is Life Coaching and how do you know if you need one? By Anne Corry. If you answer yes to more than three of the following questions then you could benefit from seeing a life coach.

Do you... Worry about little things? Feel insecure about your future/job/ relationship? Always criticise yourself? Never seem to have enough time? Always seem to be shouting at the kids? Feel you let other people’s needs dictate your day to day life? Wonder if there is more to life? Coaching isn’t about treating serious medical problems. It’s about taking what you have and moving it up a level. For example, if you give your life a grade of C, the right sort of coaching can lift the score to a B+ or even an A. Or if you already feel like you would grade it an A minus, how about jumping to an A+? Athletes don’t just learn their sport and then stop training. They have a coach who will keep them on top of their game, analyse their performance and find ways of shaving a tenth of a second off their time or adding a centimetre to the length of a jump. For Andy Murray to win Wimbledon he had to re-look at his game and learn some new techniques. He was already brilliant, but just needed something extra.

“Life is like taking part in sport, but you don’t have a panel of judges holding up score cards at the end of each day - the chief judge in your life is you” Life is like taking part in sport, but you don’t have a panel of judges holding up score cards at the end of each day - the chief judge in your life is you. You know how the day went. Did you have too many pointless arguments with colleagues or family or your partner? Did your work leave you feeling satisfied or even energised or was it a grind that exhausted you physically, mentally and emotionally? Did you give the day your best shot or were just hiding out waiting for it to end? The difference between a successful day and stressful one is mostly down to your attitude; the way you see yourself and the world. Your attitude is your map of the world and is made up of past

Please mention Oracle Magazine when responding to adverts

experiences, influential people and the choices you’ve made. If you can learn to control your attitude, you can gain the edge that will turn an ordinary day into a good one and a good day into a great one. The good news is that it’s not really that hard. It takes commitment and practice, but there are just a few basic techniques that will help you to analyse where your thoughts and attitudes are coming from and then to question and turn around the unhelpful and negative parts.

“The difference between a successful day and stressful one is mostly down to your attitude” Try the questions I have asked and answer them honestly, If you find that you would benefit from a bit of a push visit www.lifedetectives.co.uk or call or Email Anne on 07854542745 / annecorry@gmail.com.

The key to achieving

your fitness goals Personal Trainer Emma Corry reveals the key to keeping on track and staying motivated to achieve your goals.

S

o how many of us have actually stuck to our New Year’s resolutions? How many times did you really get up at 6am and go for that run? How many times did you actually make it to the gym in the last couple of months? Did you just have one glass of wine a week or just one tiny little chocolate biscuit on a Sunday evening? Surveys have shown most people have actually given up on their resolutions by the second Friday in January...those good intentions lasted less than 2 weeks! Now before you go beating yourself up, let’s take a moment to really look at why you might have failed. The big problem with New Year’s resolutions is most people will set themselves a huge goal that is normally very unrealistic, then when the first

have given something up, it’s all you can think about. You don’t need to give up chocolate or ban yourself from having a glass of your favourite Chardonnay, you just need to be smart and take everything in moderation. Try saving your vices for 2 evenings a week; you’ll learn to appreciate them more if you have them less.

Rule 2: Be honest with yourself

stumble happens everyone beats themselves up and decides that they can’t do it, so they may as well just give up. Spring is right around the corner, so this year lets change the pattern. So you ordered a take-out and yes your trainers are still sat looking like new in their box... so what? Every day is a new day, a new start with a clean slate! Now is the time to make the changes to become the happier and healthier you. Follow my simple rules and be amazed at what you will have achieved at the end of 2014.

Are you really going to get up at 6am every morning and hit the gym? Did you really believe you could say goodbye to chocolate forever?! Write a list of goals you want to achieve this year and then work out a plan that will help you achieve these goals. Be honest in your planning. If you aren’t an early riser then don’t plan on getting up at 6am to hit the gym every day, instead try going in the evening. If you know you hate running, try pole dancing or salsa classes, remember this is your plan and these are your goals, tailor everything to your needs.

Rule 1: Stop giving things up

Rule 3: Don’t be afraid to Fail

The moment you tell yourself that you

we are frightened we will fail. Failure is part of everyday life, so don’t let it scare you. If you failed to follow your diet today, failed to go the gym, failed to finish that extra mile on a run - don’t beat yourself up! Learn from your failure and use it to

“you are more amazing than you could ever imagine. Your body is capable of so much; let it show you just how amazing it can really be.” be stronger and smarter next time.

Rule 4: Believe in Yourself This is by far the most important piece advice that you can ever have. Stop worrying that you can’t do it “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure”, you are more amazing than you could ever imagine. Your body is capable of so much; let it show you just how amazing it can really be. Next time you think that you can’t and the voice of doubt creeps in, take a deep breath, let your mind go clear and in that moment

truly believe in yourself and watch the truly amazing things that can and will happen!

Rule 5: Keep Yourself Motivated Motivation is the key to keeping you on your path to a healthy and happy life. Don’t rely on others to motivate you, instead put together a dream board full of pictures, motivational quotes and anything that helps you to stay focused and on track. “Motivation is a fire from within. If someone else tries to light that fire under you, chances are it will burn very briefly.”― Stephen R. Covey Follow my simple rules and the changes will come. Just remember you are a work in progress, success doesn’t happen overnight nor does it come to those who give up so make sure you allow yourself the time to become successful.

Spring is here! It’s time to give your mind a good SRING CLEAN!

A

s you sit in the comfort of your favourite chair, or maybe a place where you can relax and enjoy your surroundings, take a moment to wonder, and while you wonder, just become aware of what you notice. It maybe something you see or something you hear or maybe just a feeling that you get, which reminds you of a place. Perhaps it was a moment in time where you felt on top of your game, work was great and home life was really enjoyable. You felt totally confident, totally relaxed and totally focused on what you were about to do next. How did that make you feel? Were you energised, lost in the moment, totally happy with your life, visualising your dream? How often do you feel like that? Maybe not quite as often as you would like. Is there something that is holding you back, maybe something in the present or the past, which is emotionally hijacking you, preventing you to be able to move forward?

“Whatever arena you choose to use your skills, whether it be business, coaching therapy or the outdoors; A Mind 4 Adventure has the ability to help you succeed in your chosen environment” If any of this rings true, it maybe because you have had a lifetime of running yourself down and telling yourself you’re not good enough. Ask yourself, is it time to let go of this baggage and allow you to feel totally confident? A Mind 4 Adventure offer some of the most exciting and engaging NLP, Hypnosis, Time Line Therapy TM and performance coaching programmes in the United Kingdom.

Whatever arena you choose to use your skills, whether it be business, coaching therapy or the outdoors; A Mind 4 Adventure has the ability to help you succeed in your chosen environment. Radio Plymouth is bucking the trend…. The newest FM station on the UK network is four years old this month and they’re not going anywhere, which is a good thing!

Y

ounger radio listeners probably can’t imagine a time before the existence of commercial radio. In fact, prior to 1973 the only local radio on offer was from BBC stations and even they only started in 1967. After an explosion of new stations in the 80s commercial radio started down the corporate route, centralising much of their operations and reducing overheads, so that these days the vast majority of commercial stations are owned by a handful of companies. This has led to local radio being less than truly “local”, with many individual stations merging on a regional basis and then even carrying some of their output from central locations. There is an argument that says it doesn’t matter where the programming comes from and that many listeners neither know nor care, however you

“With the latest audience figures show 38,400 listeners tuning in every week, the biggest figure to date, Plymouth’s local commercial station seems to be going from strength to strength” won’t find anyone at Radio Plymouth who agrees with that approach. Station Manager and Afternoon Presenter Tim Manns explains, “We always knew that we wanted ours to be a 100% local radio station. With a potential audience of a quarter of a million we have always believed that Plymouth deserves a full-time local station. Our place is right here in the city, where we can be in touch with our listeners, which is why we chose premises on the Hoe. That means whatever is happening in the city, on the waterfront or at the Barbican is only ever five minutes away.

“Our local politicians know where we are and are regular visitors and of course we are very handy for artists performing at the Theatre Royal and the Pavilions.” With the latest audience figures (RAJAR/Ipsos MORI/RSMB Q4 2013) show 38,400 listeners tuning in every week, the biggest figure to date, Plymouth’s local commercial station seems to be going from strength to strength. In the

Running

Do it for charity, for fun or for yourself. Run - It’s liberating! But, firstly it’s important to know the do’s and don’t about this individual sport. Louise Hobbs goes in search of the secret to enjoyment in running.

S

tories of people shedding five stone, raising thousands of pounds for charity, even people brought back from the brink of suicide have amazed me, in my quest to discover the benefits of running. Why is running such a popular way to keep fit? Obvious factors would be the weight-loss and fitness benefits, which are quickly reaped from running, but there are also impressive psychological gains to be made. It is now a recommended sport for people who suffer from clinical depression and can also help people battling with addictions by releasing ‘feel-good’ brain chemicals called endorphins. Sufferers report feelings of empowerment and ability to focus when they run, allowing them to be alone without pressures.

A Weighty Decision?

Most people begin running to lose a few pounds as it turns your body into a calorie burning furnace! Combined with healthy eating, jogging is an efficient way to get into shape with the added bonus of physical fitness thrown in. Getting the best results in the shortest time will mean jogging little and often,

Running regularly can enable you to beat stress and improves clarity of mind it will be a slow process if you are only willing to go once a week. But, bear in mind that you can run anywhere at anytime, why not take your trainers to work with you and run in your lunch hour, replace driving to the shops with running or make a day of it and go out somewhere picturesque where you can enjoy beautiful scenery. That’s the beauty of running it’s versatile and it’s free! It is important for beginners to start slowly and cautiously and not expect too much too soon. Going it alone means you will be your own mentor and remembering to take these steps before and after

14 March 2014

Call Oracle Magazine 01752 691007

running is essential for your own wellbeing;

Warm Ups Jog slowly around to warm up and get the blood flowing to your muscles. Remember; don’t stretch before you run.

Post Run Sip your drinks. Guzzling too much water too quickly can flood your body. Stretch all your muscle groups for 15 to 20 minutes afterwards. This is important for your muscles to cool down and for your heart rate to return to normal. Continue to re-hydrate your body over the next 24 to 48 hours. Purchasing correct fitting, comfortable running shoes is a must for everyone, if only for the fact that sore feet make running become a painful and unpleasant experience. Shoe specialist Graham Richardson explained to me some of the fundamentals about finding the best shoes for you. “For a beginner I make sure that the shoes are as snug as possible so the

www.oracle.uk.net

info@oracle.uk.net

person will want to keep going, for the runner who is a bit more established we can look at taking pressure away from certain areas of the body to help keep your running style as efficient as possible for longer. Hopefully making your running more enjoyable,” With over 20 years experience in the running industry Graham is extremely knowledgeable and is an expert in footwear. Visited by ‘wannabe’ runners frequently, I asked him how he encourages fresh faces to take up the sport “I would always say; be sensible in how you approach this new adventure, is there someone you know who also might want to do this? It is great to have a partner to share your ups and downs with. The biggest hurdle is your own mind and getting past the fear of people seeing you if you are not the Amazonian goddess type female. Once you get past this you can progress quite quickly, but again, sensibly.” Incentives which may entice some of us to take to our feet are endless: • Stress relief • Sense of achievement (work towards goals) • Improved health • Weight-loss • Mental and emotional strength

• • • • •

Clarity of mind Raise money for charity To enjoy time alone Meet new people Boost self-esteem

It is understandable that people feel they can reach new heights when running, nurturing emotions and dealing with dilemma’s as they go. The only few things to remember are that it’s not a

race (initially!) and well fitting trainers are paramount. Remarkably, finding out about running has completely changed my view. Bad memories of plodding along red-faced and gasping for breath have been replaced by a genuine desire to begin a training programme and what’s even more astonishing is that losing weight and getting fit are merely the beginning.

Love the South West Coast Path This year, the South West Coast Path Association are launching the Great South West Walks 2014 - a celebration of the South West Coast Path.

T

he Great South West Walks will take place from 20th – 28th September 2014, with 100 popular circular walks around the South West Coast Path in Dorset, Devon and Cornwall (as well as the Exmoor coast through Somerset). Its aim is to raise vital funds for improvements to the path to enable everyone to continue “loving the South West Coast Path”. Organised by the South West Coast Path Association, there will be guided sponsored walks of various lengths, to suit all types of walkers. Many will be themed to include wildlife walks, family friendly walks etc. With walkers encouraged to raise sponsorship and businesses invited to support the event, the aim is to secure £250,000; with £125,000 through sponsorship from individuals and businesses, alongside £125,000 of matched funding through statutory grant making organisations. The South West Coast Path is the longest of the country’s fifteen National Trails and enables walkers to explore 630 miles of stunning coastline – part of the South West’s heritage and identity. Walking is one of the most popular activities undertaken by visitors, with the Coast Path generating over £300 million for the regional economy each year, however funding for its maintenance has shrunk.

16 March 2014

There is now much concern over how costs for ongoing improvements and upgrades to the path will be met in order to make it more accessible, attractive to a range of users and with a surface pleasant to walk on all year round. In April/May 2013, the South West Coast Path Association celebrated its 40th anniversary with “The Great South West Walk”. Over five weeks the entire north and south coastlines of the South West Coast Path were walked in tandem, meeting at a celebratory event at Land’s End, raising over £640,000 for 130 improvement projects. There is still further work to be done to improve the Coast Path, whilst establishing it as one of the best walks in the world. The Great South West Walks 2014 will help to ensure that both these objectives are met. SWCPA are working with a large number of countryside organisations on the Great South West Walks who look after or have an interest in the Coast Path - such as the South West Coast Path Team, the National Trust, County Councils and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty Teams, along with local walking groups and numerous tourism businesses.

Call Oracle Magazine 01752 691007

Western Morning News, Cornwall Today, Country Walking magazine and BBC Radio Cornwall and Devon are also kindly supporting the event. Each walk during the eight-day event will be guided by local experts, rangers and path wardens, who are all assisting the SWCPA with this event. The improvement projects will start in autumn 2014 with the aim of being complete by summer 2015. For further information about the Great South West Walks 2014 please visit www.GreatSouthWestWalks.co.uk You can also follow the event on Twitter @LoveSWCoastPath or Facebook /SouthWestCoastPath To take part, register now! The South West Coast Path Association offices are open Monday to Friday 9am to 1pm at Bowker House, Lee Mill Bridge, PL21 9EF – please feel free to come in and have a browse. We sell lots of Coast Path related books, maps, clothing and souvenirs. You can also join the Association for only £14.50 for single or £16 for joint annual membership. Changes to No Win No Fee and Damages

N

o win - No fee compensation was introduced in 1995 to enable accident victims access to justice and entitlement to damages, even if they couldn’t afford to pay for legal representation themselves. In April 2013, the Government introduced significant changes to the way the system works in England and Wales. Before April, the losing party was liable in most cases to pay all of the legal costs associated with the claim, meaning the claimant would keep all of their damages. No win - No fee still means that if your claim is unsuccessful, you will not have to pay any legal fees. However, defendants are no longer obliged to pay any success fee or legal expense insurance premium. This now has to be kept in mind by the claimant particularly as insurance premiums are usually staged and increase with the issue of proceedings. It is now important to carefully consider whether it is cost effective to take certain steps.

Although solicitors can still offer a No win - No fee service, claimants are now expected to contribute to their legal costs from the compensation they receive. In return the level of damages for pain and suffering has been increased by 10%. In most cases a claim is now notified to the defendant direct by the Ministry of Justice on-line system known as the “Portal”. It is anticipated by the Government that the claims process will be simpler and quicker and as a consequence the amount of legal costs that a defendant is obliged to pay is fixed in claims of less than £25,000.00. A solicitor now has to agree with the claimant what percentage success fee will be charged and deducted from the damages. The success fee is capped by law at 25% of the value of damages for pain and suffering and past losses. We continue to provide a No win - No fee service. We set our success fee at a level judged to ensure that we can carry out a thorough investigation of the claim,

so that our clients achieve a proper level of damages and keep as much of their compensation as possible. Bringing a claim under the new Portal system requires a careful consideration of several factors, particularly when offers are put forward. It is important to obtain professional legal advice from the outset. We are happy to offer free initial advice to you on whether or not there is a compensation claim. Please contact Chris Kallis to arrange a meeting to discuss your claim without any obligation.

Blueberry Pancakes Nothing says “I love you Mum” better than a delicious breakfast in bed!

Ingredients • 200g Self-raising Flour • 1 tsp Baking Powder • 1 Egg • 300ml Milk

• Knob of Butter • 150g pack Blueberries • Sunflower Oil for Cooking • Golden or Maple Syrup

Method 1. Mix together the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Beat the egg with the milk, make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and whisk in the milk to make a thick smooth batter. Beat in the melted butter, and gently stir in half the blueberries. 2. Heat a teaspoon of oil in a large non-stick frying

pan. Drop a large tablespoonful of the batter per pancake into the pan to make pancakes about 7.5cm across. Make three or four pancakes at a time. Cook for about 3 minutes over a medium heat until small bubbles appear on the surface of each pancake, then turn and cook another 2-3 minutes until golden. Cover with kitchen paper to keep warm while you use up the rest of the batter. Serve with golden syrup and the rest of the blueberries.

Plymouth Auction Rooms aids Sir Joshua Fundraiser Plymouth Auction Rooms is to play a key role in a campaign to honour one of the city’s most famous artists, who became a painter to a king and an inspiration to generations.

A

special auction is to be held at the firm’s Cattedown saleroom on March 19 in aid of a £10,000 appeal to buy two works by Sir Joshua Reynolds, the renowned 18th century portrait painter who was born in Plympton St Maurice. Modern day artists are donating work to be sold in aid of the Reynolds: A Journey To Genius appeal, which has been organised by Friends of Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery. It aims to raise the cash as part of the price for a self-portrait and sketchbook by Sir Joshua, which it is hoped could find a

permanent home in Plymouth. Artists who have pledged support include Bobbie Blacker, Anne Scarratt, Ellen Claire Williams, Rosie Wyatt, Dave Crocker and Teresa Wicksteed. The sale will be held during Plymouth Auction Rooms’ quarterly fine paintings and prints sale, starting at 6pm on March 19. Auctioneer and valuer Paul Keen said: “Sir Joshua Reynolds is an iconic figure in the art world and it would be wonderful for Plymouth to acquire two original works to put on permanent show here. “We are proud to be playing a role in the campaign to acquire these works for the city.” Michael Moore, chairman of the Friends, said: “We are over half way towards raising the £10,000 we pledged for the Museum’s acquisition of the Reynolds self-portrait and a sketchbook he compiled during his visit to Italy 1750-1752. “The self-portrait shows him at the age

of 23, and was painted in 1746, while he was living in Dock (now Devonport).” The sketchbook was completed during a trip to Majorca and Italy which helped transform the way he thought about art, and Mr Moore added: “Fewer than 10 sketchbooks of this revelatory period in his life survive, so the chance for Plymouth to acquire one must not be missed.” If local people can raise the £10,000 by August 9, it will trigger grants of around £500,000 to buy the works. Sir Joshua was born in 1723, the son of a grammar school master, and became one of Britain’s finest portrait painters. Knighted in 1769, he was appointed painter to King George III in 1784. He was founding President of the Royal Academy in London and died aged 68 in 1792.
