HEALTH & BEAUTY

Beautiful Lily’s Salon: Jayne Rainbow’s business venture At Beautiful Lily’s, Jayne offers a wide range of treatments ranging from simple eyebrow waxing to relaxing aromatherapy treatments, reflexology, Indian head massage and beauty therapy, all using a wide range of highly reputable products.

I

n her late teens, Jayne saw an advert in the local newspaper for an eight week introductory course in aromatherapy massage. She thoroughly enjoyed the course and, with encouragement, decided to study for a diploma in anatomy and physiology, Swedish body massage and aromatherapy. Despite battling with depression, she qualified in 2000 and continued to train as a reflexologist at Plymouth College, gaining an NVQ qualification in 2001, and going on to learn the art of Indian head massage. It was during this course that she became pregnant with her first child, but

Pictured: Jayne Rainbow

persevered and gained qualification in 2005. Having worked in various beauty salons, she decided to take some much needed time out after the birth of her daughter and spent a year as a “stay at home mum” until a former colleague persuaded her to train in beauty therapy. She again fell pregnant during the course and again managed to finish, passing with flying colours. Desperate to get back to work she decided to work from home. A garage conversion created an ideal salon and the only question left was what to name it. With her children very much now the centre of her life, she decided to name the business after Beau and Lily. As ever, looking after two children and running a business was a struggle and Jayne found herself continually tired, stressed and once again entering the depths of depression. Following a diagnosis with M. E. in 2010, and numerous trials and attempts with antidepressants and diet changes in an attempt to increase her energy levels, she was introduced to the popular food supplement JuicePLUS+. Surprisingly, just a few weeks after taking the powdered fruit and vegetable capsules, she noticed a big difference in her moods and energy to the point where she agreed to run (and completed) the Brighton marathon, raising money for a friend’s daughter who suffers with a rare degenerative disease. She also found recovery after training was helped by taking the JuicePLUS+ complete shakes and, following such a positive

personal experience with the product, also became a representative for the business. On top of everything else, Jayne is also an ambassador for Tropic Skin Care products which are made with the finest natural ingredients to take the very best care of skin, using the products in her salon as well as selling them. She is also trained by Dermalogica but wanted a product that was more natural and more affordable. In addition to Tropic, Jayne also uses well known brands including Lauren’s Way (from the Only Way Is Essex) Spray Tan and Couture eyelashes. “I always dreamt of having my own salon and Beautiful Lily’s fits perfectly around my family life. With my low overheads, I am able to offer very competitive prices, have regular clients and thoroughly enjoy what I do. If I can help someone feel better about themselves in any way, then I feel I have done my job”. Jayne is pleased to offer all new customers a 25% discount on their first treatment at Beautiful Lily’s this December. Please call, email or visit the website to book an appointment or to find out more about JuicePLUS+ or Tropic products.

Your Jewellery the Way You desire... W

The bespoke experience starts with a consultation certificate at £20. Consultations are held in a warm, relaxed atmosphere near Lee Mill in Devon or for a little extra at the client’s home. Over a coffee or a glass of bubbly, the first thing to discuss is what the piece is for and whether the client has any designs in mind. Next is the choice of gems, pearls and precious metals that the piece of jewellery is made from before finally working on a design unique to the client. No two pieces of jewellery are ever exactly the same. Once the piece of jewellery or set is designed the designer will agree a price and a delivery date. Also available are gift certificates that cover the whole or part of the cost of the finished piece, or if it’s a present then the cost can be agreed separately from

LEISURE

In One Year & Out The Other It’s common knowledge that new year’s resolutions have a very short life span, no matter how hard we try to implement them. This year plan out your resolutions with these useful tips, and your goals will become much more achievable. Instead of heading for drastic changes, making over certain aspects of your life ensures that your resolutions have a healthy life span! By Nimra Imran. Saving Money

Get out of Debt

Get Fit

It’s time to crack out the piggy bank and make plans to save money for this new year. For example a simple tip is to add up any unexpected or extra income. Upon receiving a bonus, gift or cash for extra work, use the rule of thirds to determine how to use it. Put one third away for the future and put the second third away immediately into some sort of investments or savings. Finally, stash one third for the present to make a home or personal improvement purchase. By following this rule you will see your debt shrink and your savings grow!

Set up a strict budget, work out how much you owe and who you owe it to. By being disciplined and keeping an eye on your spending you can see a massive shrink in your debt. Alongside that, organise your bills and ensure that you pay on time. If you have a mortgage, make sure that it is as friendly to your bank account as possible.

With increasingly busy schedules, there is seldom time left to go to the gym at the end of a busy day. Instead, try and keep active throughout the day. Dance wildly to music while getting ready in the morning or while cooking a healthy meal after work. Twirl a hula hoop or jump rope. Whenever you move it will count and the more fun it is the better. Doing ten to fifteen minutes of activity every so often is easier than committing to an hour at the gym and you can more easily fit it in around your schedule.

“By following this rule you will see your debt shrink and your savings grow!” 14 January 2015

Weight Loss Long term healthy eating is a much better and sustainable method of losing weight as opposed to yo-yo dieting. Not only will you see more improvements in your weight loss plan but also healthier eating has numerous other physical and psychological benefits. For example, eating breakfast everyday can help weightloss. If you’re skipping it, then it's time to stop and add this to your list of new year’s resolutions. Studies have shown that by skipping breakfast every day, you may be setting yourself up for a major binge later. Instead, opt for a meal high in fibre, for example, cereal and fruit, so you’ll stay fuller longer.

LEISURE See Friends More It gets harder and harder to keep in contact with friends with more commitments and relentless work schedules. Try making errand dates: invite your friend or neighbour for a quick walk around the block with your dog or for a quick trip to collect groceries or the farmer’s market. You’ll be able to gain some much needed face time with your friends and cross something off your to do list. This is certainly a very productive way to hang out with your friends.

“It is never too late to learn something new!” websites such as Mind Snacks and Duolingo. Or brush up on your maths skills with an array of websites on offer. By taking on a class or course online, you can tailor your learning to fit around your schedule. Why not try taking part in an arts and craft class, or undertake some do-it-yourself projects. The possibilities are endless!

Volunteering

Take a Class It is never too late to learn something new! If you’ve ever wanted to learn a new language, why not try virtual learning

If you’re an animal lover, try volunteering at your local animal shelter. Not only will you be giving something back to the community but it has been proven that interacting with animals is psychologically excellent. Or try volunteering at a charity shop or a nearby care home. No matter what you choose to do, getting involved within the community is an excellent way to give back and get active.

Free home visit! Free parking! Free computer aided drawings! Credit now available!

Roast Pheasant with Lemon and Rosemary

Serves Prep T 6 30 minim. e:

Ingredients

• 2 hen pheasants, young and tender • 2 lemons, quartered • 3-4 fresh rosemary stalks • sea salt and crushed black pepper • 12-15 garlic cloves • 100ml/3½fl oz extra virgin olive oil • 125ml/4½fl oz white wine

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Using a sharp knife, cut the pheasants in half down the back, removing the backbone. Discard, then chop the pheasants in half down the middle. 2. Trim

off any fat, place the pheasants in a large bowl. Squeeze over the lemon juice and add the lemon quarters to the bowl. Bruise the rosemary stalks with your hands and add them to the bowl. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Crush the garlic cloves with the flat side of a knife or with your hands, but don't peel them. Add them to the bowl. Pour over the olive oil and the white wine. Mix well and leave the pheasant to marinate for about 20 minutes. Heat a heavy-based frying pan. When the pan is hot, remove the pheasant pieces from the marinade and sear them, skin-side down. When the pieces are browned, place them in a roasting dish. Pour over the white wine and the marinade from the bowl. Place the pheasant in the oven and roast for 20-30 minutes, until cooked through. Cut the pheasant into serving pieces and pile onto a plate. Pour the pan juices over the top and spoon the lemon, rosemary and garlic. Serve with boiled potatoes and bread.

Is Alcohol really making you fat? With January finally here and the party season behind us, it’s time to think about giving up the drink. The temptation for an iced cold beer or chilled glass of wine at the end of a long day is often too great to resist. With studies showing that 75% of men and 80% of women are drinking above the daily limit, does a cheeky glass in the evening a few times a week really affect your health and is alcohol really making you fat? Alcohol and weight gain usually come hand in hand. Alcohol has no real nutritional benefits, its high in calories and when consumed it stimulates insulin production and a spike in insulin levels can lead to an increase in fat storage. According to the website

drinkaware.co.uk, a man drinking five pints a week consumes the same amount of calories as someone who gets through 221 doughnuts in a year. Just 2 pints a day, 4 days a week can lead too nearly 75,000 extra calories a year! One pound of fat is 3,500 calories meaning just 8 pints a week could lead to a 22lb weight gain in just 12 months.

sparkling water, avoid turning to a drink after a bad day at work and go for a walk to clear your head instead. Just a few simple changes to your drinking habits could have huge benefits to both your health and fitness levels. So why not start making those smart changes now and make 2015 your healthiest year ever!

So the ugly truth of the matter is, yes alcohol can lead to weight gain, bad skin, belly bloating and love handles. With the New Year upon us it’s time to think about your health and start making smart choices. Make a conscious effort to only drink one night a week, swap your glass of wine with lunch to an apple juice or

Simon Dale: Hobbit of the Shire The mind behind a new, eco-friendly style of living, and an excellent recognition of Tolkien’s portrayal of humans living in a simple and honest way. By Nimra Imran.

E

clipsed in the stunning Welsh countryside, there lies a quaint little house, akin to those illustrated by J. R. R. Tolkien in his Lord of The Rings trilogies. In fact, this house resembles Tolkien’s description so accurately, that it may as well have been lifted from the pages of his books and placed into the countryside. But it is not Bilbo Baggins who resides in this fanciful creation. Simon Dale, a freelance photographer and graphic designer by trade, took matters into his own hands - literally after he got jaded about mortgages, rent and his carbon footprint.

Relocating his family to the Lammas, an eco-village in Wales, and armed with only a hammer, a chisel, a chainsaw and determination, Dale engineered this unique house. Both him and his wife, Jasmine Saville, were highly troubled about the affects of fossil fuel use on the environment and the carbon footprint they

28 January 2015

were leaving behind. In order to minimise their own environmental impact, they contrived this eco-friendly house in just four months! With help from his fatherin-law and relying on serendipity and the generosity of others, Dale’s ecological dream-home was built with paramount regard for the environment in mind. The home was built purely with sustainable materials; using scraps of wood for flooring and bales of straw on the dry stone walls for the interior, the cost of this Hobbit House came to a grand total of £3,000. By building his own house, it allowed the Dale’s family to live in harmony with nature, while working in their surroundings on ecological woodland management and setting up a forest garden, things that would have been impossible had they paid a regular mortgage or rent. Within just four months the Dale family managed to build an unencumbered habitat in Wales that takes gratification in an eco-friendly lifestyle. While it may not rival the technology of Apple’s headquarters, it is a natural heaven for a young ecologically sound family.

“using scraps of wood for flooring and bales of straw on the dry stone walls for the interior, the cost of this Hobbit House came to a grand total of £3,000” The house is construed of local oak wood, stone and mud retaining walls, and straw bailing for insulation. With the end goal of having as little impact on the environment as possible, Dale used construction materials that would be energy efficient and renewable. Lime plaster was used to coat the interior of the walls, a breathable and greener alternative to cement. Dug into the hillside for minimum exposure and shelter, stone and mud from the diggings was used in order to retain foundations and the walls. Scrap wood was easily put into the

flooring and fittings, and a wood burner was placed to heat the house, keeping it warm and cosy throughout the winter months. The fridge was cooled by underground air flow, implemented into the very foundations of the house in its early stages. A central skylight floods the Hobbit House with natural light, giving it an open and airy atmosphere. Dale placed solar panels to generate electricity, an excellent method of renewable energy, providing the family with all the amenities that would be required. A compost toilet is featured in the bathroom, and while the water is redirected from the nearby spring, rain water is collected from the roof of the house for garden use. Simon Dale, who has no previous professional experience in carpentry and architecture, created this home using “scrap wood for floors, materials scavenged from skips”. He did admit, however, that he had the help of his father-in-law, who happens to be a professional builder. The house was built while his wife and children camped

nearby. Dale claimed that “building from natural materials does away with producers’ profits and the cocktail of carcinogenic poisons that fill most modern buildings.” The interior of the house follows the same philosophy as the exterior, with dilettantish sources in abundance. “I enjoy diversity and handmade things,” claimed Dale; almost all of the furniture happens to be handmaid or second hand. “Everything is functional primarily, and

then aesthetic within the limits of what is functional as well as expedient,” he says. This is testament to the family’s doctrine of living simply, which is weaved in with the belief that living in harmony with the land is a significant step in the current time of a rapidly changing disposition of the world, in terms of climate change and depleting resources. And they’re not done yet! With a similar project underway, to build nine Hobbit Houses in a Pembrokeshire settlement, this community is ready to move in and live in a way that is both eco-friendly and in keeping with relevant modern technology. “What was initially for me a love of the countryside has turned into a complex understanding of how we relate to the land,” Dale says. What seems to be a quiet revolution of housing hasn’t finished yet; it is highly likely that we’ll be hearing about this eco-friendly Shire again very soon. Coffee Mornings at St. Lukes St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth invites you to join them to hold a coffee morning this February.

New for 2015.... your pack will also include an orange ‘spotty’ collecting box to take pride of place on the coffee table! We have also made it really easy to pay in your fundraising money after the event with our online payment facility.

Raising over £14,000 last year, St Luke’s are encouraging homes, groups and businesses like you, to help make this year even bigger.

Last February, whilst the whole community was uniting to host a Coffee Morning, St Luke’s were providing specialist care for 839 patients; at home; in hospital and at our hospice. These patients were probably living in your neighbourhood and would have directly benefited from the money raised through a Coffee Morning.

Assistant Community Fundraiser at St Luke’s, Rebecca Bristow said: “We want everybody in Plymouth, Tavistock and the South Hams drinking coffee, socialising and raising money for St Luke’s. St Luke’s Coffee Mornings had a bit of a makeover last year with the introduction of a new fundraising pack. Your free Coffee Morning pack includes: a poster to promote your event, recipes for some scrumptious cakes and fun games to play to ensure your Coffee Morning stands out from the rest”. The Hard Truth! Why recycling over landfill or mass incineration? There is a lot of debate over recycling and why it’s so important yet easy to ignore or brush under the carpet.

products however on a first pass through the plant with the addition of a further laser optic unit we can achieve 72% recovery from waste that was previously going to landfill.

As a leading economy on this planet the UK has to set the standard at every opportunity it can to make real changes in carbon reduction and recycling plays a much bigger role in that than is realised. As a consumer society the demand for packaging grows each year and using recycled plastics, metals and paper compared to virgin products cannot be ignored.

7% is rigid plastic.

How it breaks down 45% is paper & card 5% is plastic bottles HDPE & PET 3% is metal inc aluminium & steel

Refuse derived fuel This material is used widely now in place of fossil fuels as it has great calorific value and is much cleaner than coal.

What this means For every 100 tonnes we process here in Exeter the following energy is saved in comparison to using virgin materials. Currently we process up to 500 tonnes a week. Paper, 184500 kwh of power , 405 barrels of oil, 315000 gallons of water, 1224.45 kgs of air pollutants from being released into the air we breathe , 2430 million BTU’S of energy and 148 cubic yards of landfill space.

By 22nd of December this year our recovery rate from general waste will be at least 72%. We have been achieving 68% by re-running certain

Steel, 963 kwh of power, 2.7 barrels of oil,16.35 million BTU’S of energy and 6 cubic yards of landfill space. Aluminium, 21000 kwh of power , 60 barrels of oil, 357 million BTU’S of energy and 15 cu-yards of landfill space.

12% is films

28% is refused derived fuel.

Our recovery figures

barrels of oil and 2450 million BTU’s of energy and 750 cubic yards of landfill space.

The totals Just taking oil alone the recycling we recover here every week in our plant in Exeter saves an astounding 3990 barrels of oil. We also save 1.43 million gallons of water a week and 1.6 million KWH of electricity.

We do all this!!!!!
