Stability vs Mobility: What’s More Important For My Back? Over recent years our understanding of spinal stability has evolved considerably. Notions of static misalignment, or simple muscle weakness, have gradually changed to incorporate newer evidence about the role of dynamic control, and how these might go awry. We have seen in our clinic that many of our patients are likely suffering from deficits in sensorimotor control. In other words, injury occurs when a patient fails to detect inappropriate motion and rein it in with a precisely matched muscular response. This is not a conscious task, but one the body should automatically perform when their spine and nervous system is functioning well! The human spine is a hugely complex structure that is simultaneously juggling two competing interests – to remain flexible and to remain stable.
Anxiety has been shown to increase in those with greater postural sway (poor spinal stability and control), which makes sense if we consider the survival implications of decreased stability.
“Following a course of Chiropractic care there was a significant improvement in smooth movement” As confidence in our ability to move decreases we necessarily have to increase our vigilance, prompting heightened anxiety. A recent paper assessed jerk index (smoothness of motion) among other parameters on people with back pain. Following a course of Chiropractic care there was a significant improvement in smooth movement. This is important, as smooth motion is a pre-requisite for fine control. Many of our patients suffer acute episodes of pain during innocuous daily movements, and it is suggested that failure to adequately control smooth movement lies at the core of the problem.
The only way that these two opposing demands can be met is to provide sensitive feedback that can monitor the shifting loads and stresses upon spinal tissues and report back to the brain efficiently. But the literature now suggests that our patients can and do suffer from problems of spinal positional awareness (ie. where and how your spinal bones are positioned). Furthermore, the implications of any such deficiency are quite profound.
So it just might be that Chiropractic adjustments have an important role in restoring joint sensitivity and movement control, and thus help in a number of profound ways.
“Anxiety has been shown to increase in those with greater postural sway” Wesley Trowse is a Doctor of Chiropractic, practicing at Plymouth Chiropractic Clinic on Mannamead Road. He has a bachelor degree in Chiropractic Science, a Masters degree in Chiropractic and is currently studying his special interest in functional neurology.
“The human spine is a hugely complex structure that is simultaneously juggling two competing interests” Information in regard to posture and spinal alignment, is sent to the same area of the brain as that for visual control, hence it is not surprising that people with spinal pain can suffer from dizziness, blurry vision and headaches.

Why Diets Don’t Work By Barbara Burgess
They reckon that by the age of 45 the average woman has been on 61 diets and will spend 31years of her life on a diet of some kind. Men are not far off with an average of 28years dieting. So we’re all getting thinner, right?
C
learly not, as statistics show that 30% of the world’s population is overweight or obese and at current rates it will be 50% by 2030. So what does this tell us? First and foremost it must tell us that, in the long term, diets don’t work! When you diet, especially those ‘Lose 6lbs in a Week’ kind of diets, your body recognises that less food is being consumed and goes into ‘famine’ mode. It produces an enzyme called Lipoprotein Lipase which helps to store extra fat, to be used in emergency (imminent death). You are now a super-efficient fat-storage machine. Lipoprotein remains in the body for up to 3 months, even after the perceived famine (diet) is over. As soon as you start eating normally again, the body sends it all straight to storage, making you fatter than before! And then to top it all, the body, to preserve that store of fat, will start to use the lean mass (muscles & bone) as it’s fuel - so the diet seems to have worked because you lose weight.
“Lipoprotein remains in the body for up to 3 months, even after the perceived famine (diet) is over. ”
Less muscle & bone means the body needs less calories to keep it going which means, as soon as you stop your diet, weight goes on quicker than before. This is why so many people who have dieted repeatedly find they are eating less and less but still putting on weight.
“It works like the central heating system in your home; you set the heating to 20°C and the house warms up to that temperature.” Added to this, the body has a natural balance that, over time, becomes a default position. In other words, if someone has been overweight for some years, the body then accepts this state as ‘normal’ and will do anything it can to hold this status quo. So that, when they diet, they lose weight to begin with, but then the body will start to regain its status quo by slowing the metabolism and holding on to every calorie it can. It works like the central heating system in your home; you set the heating to 20°C and the house warms up to that temperature.
“Less muscle & bone means the body needs less calories to keep it going ” If you then open all the windows, the temperature will drop initially, but then the boiler comes on and works hard to push the temperature back up to 20°C. If you then close all the windows and put a fire on, the boiler turns itself off, continuing to keep the house at that 20°C. The only way to reduce the temperature of the house is to actually turn the thermostat down. Hypnosis and NLP can help you to switch the ‘thermostat’ down by

“Adding hypnosis to your weight loss regime has been shown, in research, to increase weight loss by an average of 97% ” allowing your mind to begin to see the ‘thinner you’ as the ‘default’. It also helps to speed up the metabolism, encourage that ‘full’ feeling sooner, motivate you to enjoy movement, remove emotional eating from your life, encourage healthier eating and reduce cravings for sugary foods. Adding hypnosis to your weight loss regime has been shown, in research, to increase weight loss by an average of 97% and even more importantly increased the effectiveness long term by over 146%! Ascher Cliff, Switzerland
WANDERLUST In previous issues we’ve brought to you an array of winter getaways around the world and quirky hideaways situated right in your back yard. Now, it is time to tackle the big fish! Feast your eyes on some of the most gorgeous yet wonderfully unique places scattered all over the world. Read on and take a look at what could be your next big adventure... By Nimra Imran Ascher Cliff, Switzerland:
Great Blue Hole, Belize:
Kakslauttanen, Finland:
Hidden away in the beautiful, rambling mountains, there lies Ascher Cliff. This unique restaurant is the highlight of a challenging walk from Wasserauen up to Ebenalp. Great lakes, stunning mountain views and clear air accompany you on the journey, but once you reach the Ascher you’ll be greeted by the restaurant, clinging to the cliff-side in a precarious position; a true example of living on the edge. From the extensive high plateau with rich alpine flora the entire picturesque panorama of the Alpstein mountain range opens up. Another beautiful gem in Switzerland's geological crown.
There are many blue holes off of the coast of Belize, but the “Great Blue Hole” on the lighthouse Reef Atoll is the one most visible in flyover, and the most famous one for diving. A massive underwater sinkhole, surrounded by reefs, caves and sharks. The Blue Hole was a limestone cave that started to form about 150,000 years ago. Gradually the water level rose as the glacial period ended and the caves were flooded, with the roofs collapsing, thus forming this unique hole. The hole was made popular by French explorer, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who declared it “one of the top ten diving sites in the world”.
Kakslauttanen is a family resort in Lapland, Finland, 250 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. Contrary to popular belief, Kakslauttanen is fairly easy to reach. The nearest international airport is in Ivalo, just a thirty minute drive away. Located right at the edge of the wilderness along the road to the arctic sea. It’s a mere stone’s throw to the Urho Kekkomen National Park, the largest of Finland’s national parks. The Sami have inhabited the region for over a century. The surrounding environment is one of the cleanest you’ll find anywhere in the world. The water is so pure that you can quench your thirst straight from a

stream running into the crystal clear lake, and the air so fresh you can feel it deep down into your lungs. Finland is one of the safest countries in the world, so Kakslauttanen is an easy and risk free choice for a successful holiday. And with their international staff you will be served in a variety of languages. You can stay in a snow igloo, a log cabin, or the coolest thing ever… a glass igloo. Lie in your bed with your loved one and watch the Northern Lights for a one of a kind vacation.
Mt. Kelimutu, Indonesia
Poseidon Underwater Resort: See the world like fish do on this beautiful private island in Fiji. Poseidon allows you to stay at the bottom of the ocean for the night. A life changing experience, and a celebration of nature’s wonders, this is a true illustration of responsible behaviour towards our environment. Throughout the construction and operation of the resort, sustainable methods are used which provide the most inspiring vision to the guests, for many years to come.
Mt. Kelimutu, Indonesia:
Kakslauttanen, Finland
Volcanoes aren’t unusual in Indonesia, one of the world’s most geologically active countries. Mt. Kelimutu, however, manages to stand out with it’s three crater lakes, each a different colour. Adding to its kaleidoscopic appeal, chemical reactions spurred by volcanic activity cause the lakes to change colour. What colour and when remains unpredictable. With the lakes each about a thousand feet in diameter and found at the eastern summit of Kelimutu, it is an incredible sight to behold. Despite the fact that this volcano is little known outside of Asia, many consider Kelimutu to be one the seven wonders of nature and it is hard to disagree.

Strawberry & Pimm’s jelly
www.bbcgoodfood.com
Ingredients
• 750g ripe strawberries, plus extra to serve • 50g caster sugar, plus extra to taste (optional) • 250-300ml/9-11fl oz Pimm's • 4 sheets leaf gelatine • lemon juice (optional) • whipped cream and shortbread, to serve (optional)
Method 1. 2.
Wash, drain and hull the strawberries. Tip into a food processor or blender with the caster sugar and blitz to crush. Line a colander with a sheet of clean muslin. Place the colander over a large bowl. Tip the strawberry mixture into the colander and allow the juices to drip through overnight (not in the fridge).
3.
In the morning, measure the strained juice – you should have 300-400ml depending on the berries. Add enough Pimm’s to make up to 600ml.
4.
Place the gelatine leaves in a bowl and cover with cold water. Leave for 10 mins to soften, then lift out of the water, squeezing out the excess. In a small pan, heat 200ml of the strawberry and Pimm’s liquid until it is hot to touch, then remove from the heat. Add the gelatine to the hot liquid and stir to dissolve. Pour back into the remaining cool liquid, taste and add sugar or lemon juice to balance the flavour.
5.
Divide the mixture between 4 glasses and place in the fridge for at least 4 hrs to set. Top with halved strawberries and whipped cream, and serve with shortbread.

BEE A LITTLE MORE KIND
N
othing signals the arrival of spring and summer better than the sound of honeybees buzzing from flower to flower. While they are revered as a wonder of nature they are also loathed as a nuisance in equal measure. Allergy prone humans worldwide dodge the airborne insects with fervour, while scientists, on the other hand, breed and study them for their remarkable abilities. But whatever your reaction, there is a lot about these little buzzers that isn’t readily apparent from simple observations in the wild. Today, bees are classed as an endangered species, and without them not only would the human race starve, but our entire ecosystem and food chain would change formation as we know it. Take a look…
By Nimra Imran
Bees are vital to our food chain as pollinators; one third of the food we eat would not be available but for bees. Looking at the bigger picture, pollination by bees is also important for genetic sustainability. With the news of their endangerment now more worrying than ever, many of us rejoice at the fact that we’ll never have to worry about getting stung at a family barbecue again.
practices, is incredibly important to maintain high levels of food production. Bees are in constant danger of disappearing from our environment; farming practices continue to disturb the
But think again; what you might not realise is that bees play a crucial role in producing much of the food that we eat. Originally selected solely for their honey, today honeybees are valued for pollinating nearly ninety different kind of crops. One-third of our total diet is derived from insect-pollinated plants, so their survival, which is threatened by parasites, pesticides, habitat loss, and grazing
natural habitats and forage of solitary and bumblebees at a rate which gives them little chance for re-establishment. The honey bee is under attack from the varroa mite and it is only the treatment and care provided by beekeepers that is keeping colonies alive. Most wild honey bee colonies have died out as a result of this disease. These factors, coupled with the decline in the number of beekeepers in the UK, have prompted the production of the “Bees in the Curriculum” Schools pack by the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA). Attitudes to bees must change and a new generation needs to be educated into the value of bees and the

threats to their existence. Fortunately, there is much that can be done to benefit bees. In areas where the rarest species are hanging upon by a thread, we can work with farmers who are farming in ways that are sympathetic to bumblebees. Some farmers have made a few simple changes to their techniques, which have meant more blooming flowers, and as a result, a recovery of bee population in some areas. It is also possible for us, as individuals, to help bees in their own communities. Perhaps the simplest thing to do would be to plant some bee-friendly plants in your garden. Gardens cover over one million acres in the UK, and as such are a perfect opportunity to provide food for bees. If you see a struggling bee lying on a path, chances are it is exhausted and dehydrated. Simply take a teaspoon and pour a little bit of water and sugar and give it to the bee. This will help with hydration and send the bee on it’s way again! Another way to help is to get involved in survey work. By doing this, we can see what kind of species of bees are present and how their distribution changes over time. Pollinators like bees have always been taken for granted, but until recently the world is finally beginning to realise that preserving bees and other pollinators is essential for our economies that deeply depend upon them.

YOUR MORTGAGE & PROTECTION SPECIALISTS With 35 years of financial planning experience behind her, together with numerous awards, then it is perhaps not surprising that Tricia Kennedy’s company, Mortgages4Plymouth, is the number one choice for people looking to buy a home. Tricia is part of a five strong team based on Peverell Park Road, Plymouth. Part of her success has been in the company’s attention to the personal touch that sees her happily taking calls from clients in the evenings. Plus, if the client prefers to meet outside of office hours, then Tricia is happy to arrange an appointment for them in the evening. “I think it is fairly unique for someone in our line of work to be available on the mobile, seven days a week, until nine in the evening,” says Tricia. And, with Plymouth’s close links to the Royal Navy, then Tricia believes that offering this type of flexible approach to working hours is important for military families. “The military do a great job and we understand the difficulties that military personnel may have to get in touch with a broker as their working hours may mean that they are only available to talk at weekends and evenings.” “We are proud to be part of the ‘Forces’ Help to Buy’ scheme and also to be able to provide military personnel with flexible meeting hours as I feel we should give them as much help and support as we can. It is an honour to help people in the armed forces,” says Tricia. And it is not just helping military personnel that have helped to earn Tricia and her team national recognition. Since Mortgages4Plymouth was launched in 2000 then the company has seen hundreds of people write thank you letters and cards. The business has a wide portfolio of services that it can provide for clients – with help and advice available for mortgages and insurance, including cover for death, critical illness and income protection schemes.
When it comes down to mortgages then the team has an excellent reputation for being able to cut through the jargon involved to be able to simplify some of the terms used – it is a skill honed during Tricia’s original training as a teacher. There is even a “jargon busting” guide on its website! Tricia says it is a good time to look at mortgages as rates are very low at the moment and house prices are set to carrying on rising as the demand for housing continues to grow. And of course, you may also want to consider a Buy To Let mortgage as an alternative to paying into a pension, or to top up retirement funds. Having spent 25 years advising on pensions and seeing the returns, a buy to let is a fantastic investment, with both property growth and rental income which continues to grow. “I sold pensions for 20 years so know what pensions provide and I feel that a ‘Buy to Let’ portfolio is valuable as rental income grows and so lenders feel confident in that market – which means that rates go down.” It is perhaps not surprising that given the team’s combined experience of around 80 years in the industry then they are naturally respected nationwide - and even top financial experts seek their advice. And their service doesn’t just stop with ensuring you’re satisfied. When you do business with Mortgages4Plymouth then the company is happy to provide a free Will service which Tricia says can save massive pitfalls for the 70% of people who haven’t planned ahead in event of their death. Mortgages4Plymouth are also happy to

help people who may have only recently gone self employed as the team can match mortgages for clients with just one year’s worth of accounts – so helping you onto the property ladder faster. The friendly and experienced team is happy to provide a no obligation, face to face initial appointment, to help you move further on the property ladder or to discuss the government backed “Help to Buy” scheme for new homes. And, of course, no office would be complete without the office dog. The sixth member of the team is Miss Ellie, a two and a half year old French bulldog. Not only is Miss Ellie an intrinsic part of the Mortgages4Plymouth family but everyone always find her charm irresistible and she certainly lives up to the French bulldog’s reputation of being known for their comical talent! “She is our meet and greeter who often takes on the role of office childminder and is always very entertaining for us all,” says Tricia.

How does a phoenix work We’ve all seen it happen a company goes into liquidation then springs up again the next day trading at the same place with the same staff and assets, using a similar name and carries on as if nothing has happened. This is commonly known as a “phoenix”.
rules in place that Directors must follow in order to avoid a criminal offence. Of course the above is all well and good but who’s to say that a phoenix will work? Before starting again the directors will have a whole host of practical things to consider going forward with the new business like what were the issues that caused the old business to become insolvent and can these be corrected second time around and will the landlord, bank, suppliers, staff and customers be prepared to support the new business?
On the face of it, a phoenix can look very unfair but if the directors have acted on professional advice it can be perfectly legal.
If you are a director of a company that may be insolvent and you want to start again you need to take great care before you start the process and take proper professional advice.
The directors can buy back the assets from the Liquidator as long as payment is physically made and the price is at (or above) market value.
Do not to transfer any assets or reuse the old business name without seeking that advice from licensed insolvency practitioner like me.
There can be serious issues for the directors if they want to reuse a similar name of the old company as there are

Q
& A: resolving the financial issues that arise from marriage breakdown
Jonathan Madge Director
By Jonathan Madge
Jonathan Madge is a Director with The Family Law Company. Jonathan specialises in divorce cases and resolving the financial issues that arise from marriage breakdown. Jonathan aims to help negotiate practical and fair outcomes for his clients and their children wherever possible and, where necessary, represents and supports them effectively through court proceedings. Q. I am in my early forties with children aged 14 and 5. Since the children are staying with me, doesn’t my spouse have a duty to house me? A: Not exactly. Where you have children from the marriage aged under 18, the court’s first consideration is the reasonable needs of those children. In practice, this means that firstly the court is likely to try to find a way to ensure the children have a home of a reasonable size, amenities and location (taking into account the location of the schools and work) and that the parent with care can reasonably afford to finance that home. However, the court will try to balance the assets overall - so that if the children will be staying overnight with the other parent, they should also be able to afford an appropriate home. If the parent with care of the children cannot take on the mortgage, but a cheaper home will provide reasonable accommodation, occasionally a solution is found in which they move to enable the other parent at least to be able to afford to take on a new mortgage for his or her new home. If the parent with care successfully argues that they don’t want to move, and the other parent is tied to the original mortgage for many years, that other parent has a stronger case for being entitled to a share of the equity at a later point. This may mean a forced sale of the home when the first of a number of given events takes place, the latest being usually when the youngest child reaches eighteen or finishes full-time secondary education.
Q. So the assets aren’t just divided 50/50 then? A: No. Beyond the first consideration of the children’s needs, there is a list of other factors the court will take into account when working out a fair division of property, other assets and savings, pensions, and income. As well as assets and income that already exist, the court can take into account future earning capacities of both parents. Q. Does that mean someone who has stayed at home for many years to bring up the children may still be expected to go out to work after the divorce? A: This depends on the available assets and income, age and ability to do paid work. If a wife, for example, hasn’t done paid work for many years, the court may expect her to do what she can to find a job. However, the court would also look for a way to ensure she is not left stranded, perhaps by awarding maintenance for a specified period of time to give her the chance to find work. If, after this period she can show she has made reasonable efforts to earn a living but has not been successful, she could bring the case back to court for an extension of maintenance – although the cost of this could be high and the outcome uncertain. It is the same scenario if the husband stayed home to bring up the children. Q. I know my husband is going to get
Please mention Oracle Magazine when responding to adverts
substantial inheritance and his parents are in their eighties. Both my parents died during the marriage and we spent the money. Is future inheritance taken into account after a long marriage? A. Often this is not the case. A court would need to be satisfied that the future inheritance was likely to be received quite soon for it to be considered a ‘relevant’ asset in the divorce. This may seem quite harsh for the person who has already received their inheritance, Q. So the overall outcome in divorce is often not clear-cut? A. That’s right. The Court takes into account a range of factors to achieve what it regards as fair. As experienced family lawyers, The Family Law Company can advise you on how a court would be likely to balance these factors, so a binding financial agreement can be negotiated, and the need for protracted and expensive proceedings can be averted. Where separating couples want to work cooperatively together to find their own financial outcome, we also offer Collaborative Law and mediation services.

estled underneath tall cliffs, and in hidden coves there are miles and miles of sandy white beaches waiting for you in all their glory. Broadsands, Exmoor: Hidden away beneath the wooden cliffs between Watermouth and Combe Martin, on Devon’s wild North coast, is Broadsands, one of Exmoor’s best beaches. This deep, double cove has many caves to explore, and two lovely secluded shingle beaches offering sheltered swimming. Certainly not one to be missed, Broadsands is only a two hour drive from Plymouth!
Kynance Cove, Lizard, Cornwall: Set among the wild flower covered rocks of the Lizard Peninsula’s breathtaking and ragged coastline, Kynance Cove was a favourite of Romantic poets and painters. Its azure clear water is perfect for snorkelling and swimming, and the serpentine rock towers invite daredevil jumpers. There’s a lovely National Trust tea room for cream teas and ice creams nearby. At low tide you can climb or swim around to the secret bay opposite the Asparagus Islands where sea caves and rock pools are in abundance.
Nanjizal Bay, Penrith, Cornwall: This is the real Lands End: wild and rugged with great caves that could hide away sleeping dragons. The amount of sand comes and goes according to the winter storms, and there is an incredible waterfall and a stream for children to play

in. The amazing “Song of the Sea” eyelet rock arch is for the adventurous and leads out to the ocean. First bathe in the shallow rock pool, then snorkel through the sea tunnel, admiring the astonishing coralline pink walls while the water thunders and booms.
Winspit Lagoon, Purbecks, Dorset: Along the rugged cliffs of the Purbecks shoreline lies Winspit, a beautiful turquoise lagoon with huge, flat limestone rocks perfect for swimming, exploring and sunbathing. The whole area was once a hive of the 18th century quarrying activity, with limestone being shipped out to build St Paul’s Cathedral and London’s Georgian squares. Now the cliff walls are carpeted with wild flowers and the excavations have flooded to create rock pools. Forage for samphire on the rocks and then head back up along the chalk downs for a drink at the quirky square and Compass Pub.

f devon and Cornwall Beer Beach, Devon: The picturesque village of Beer is nestled in Lyme Bay, on the 95 mile long Jurassic Coast, England’s first natural World Heritage Site and forms part of the South West Coastal Path. The shingle beach still boasts a small fleet of working fishing boats and the surrounding picture perfect white chalk cliffs provide a natural sun trap, sheltering the cove from prevailing westerly winds. From campsites and caravans to B&B’s and hotels, Beer has a wide range of facilities to cater all holiday requirements. Various local restaurants and pubs will satisfy your desire for fresh seafood, Devonshire ales and ciders and an atmosphere that brings people back year after year!
Perranporth Beach, Cornwall: It’s the beach everyone raves about and billed as a great place for surfing, snorkelling, sailing and generally splashing around. Miles of golden sand are ready to welcome you with open arms, along with the huge swells and the tall sand dunes. Starting from the village, it is easily accessible, which is ideal if you’ve got young ones in tow and you can just plonk yourself on the sand, put down your beach towels and relax. Because the beach is so huge, it almost feels as if

there’s a huge range of different things to see and do all year round. You don’t have to travel abroad in the summer to find some sunshine. During the summer months the South Devon climate is almost Mediterranean, and combined with soft sand and clear seas, you’ve got all the right ingredients for a family seaside holiday. There are car parks close to the beach and disabled access for those with mobility restrictions. South Sands is actually part of a cove so you’re sheltered from the sea winds, and it provides a neat little sun trap if you just want to lie back and soak up the rays.
you have the place to yourself and the fresh air off the ocean is exhilarating. Early morning you’ll probably see a few horses and their riders having a paddle in the surf and there’s a welcome cafe for a coffee stop halfway along. You can make the return journey (or if the tide’s in) over the extensive sand dunes which are teeming with wildlife taking pictures of butterflies and lizards.

bURTON BRADSTOCK, DORSET: Burton Bradstock is one of the main gateways to the Jurassic Coast and the South West Coastal Path. Hive Beach is a popular family destination, made up of shingle, surrounded by spectacular sandstone cliffs. It forms part of the larger Chesil Beach; a striking section of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and the largest shingle ridge in the world. When you need a break, come and sample the delights on offer at the Hive Beach Café. This local seafood restaurant sits on the shingle beach of Chesil Bank where you can savour some of the best views of the Dorset coastline.
