Secret to Long Term Weight Loss

By Barbara Burgess

Radio 4’s Jenni Murray talked earlier this year of deciding to have gastric surgery because of her ongoing battle with diets. In September of last year the newspapers were showing pictures of Birds of a Feather star Pauline Quirke, who had lost 8st and become the poster girl for the Lighter Life diet, after she had piled on the pounds again. Sadly for Pauline, she had to go through in the public eye what many dieters go through in private; the pain of learning that diets don’t work in the long term.

B

oth blame their obesity on overeating but we all know someone who can eat ‘whatever they like and not put weight on’. In the past genetics was touted as the main reason that some people put weight on easily while others don’t; research shows that while there can be genetic element it has minimal effect – the reason why obesity seems to run in families is a learnt lifestyle – nurture more than nature. The answer is not in diets, and gastric surgery, despite its current popularity, has questionable long term success and comes with the risk of malnutrition or surgical complications. If you are overweight or obese the answer is a change of mindset. We are all born with a natural ability to regulate the amount of food we eat to keep our bodies healthy; you only have to watch a baby feeding to know that when they have had enough they push away the bottle or breast. Even toddlers will only eat what they need; the rest is likely to go anywhere but in their mouths! However, as we grow up we are taught to ignore the signal that we have had enough until we can no

longer feel it. We are taught to finish our plates so that we can have dessert and we are encouraged to see food, especially sweet foods, as a form of comfort or love. Most of the problems connected to obesity such as Binging, Comfort Eating, Cravings, Lack of Exercise and Low Self-Esteem are caused by thoughts and feelings, so instead of blaming the food we need to take back responsibility and rediscover our personal power, will and selflove.

“The answer is a change of mindset” Rather than fighting the desire for that piece of cake, how would it feel if you just didn’t really fancy it? Instead of counting the calories for every plate of food that you eat, can you imagine what it would feel like to eat just what you want, knowing that you would find it easy to leave some on the plate? This is what it feels like to have a change in mindset. It’s an effortless and natural path to long term change.

ANDREA FAUSTINI

Dig in to this EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with Andrea Faustini, who placed third in the 2014 XFACTOR series. Director of the Oracle Magazine, Myles Lockwood, caught up with Andrea Faustini and talk about his upcoming album, ‘Kelly’ ,which will be released July 17th. The Italian vocal powerhouse was a firm favourite in the competition after his very first audition. Performing for Vanity Fair in Italy and receiving recognition from one of his favourite Italian singers, Elisa Toffoli, Adreas Faustini is on a roller coaster that’s heading up, up and away. Interview by Myles Lockwood

So let's kick off with your new album, ‘Kelly’. Can you tell us how you became inspired to make this album and what it's all about? When I was in the studio I was living in a dream and making my own music so it's been an amazing experience. And I think there is a little bit of everything in this album and that is what I love about it. And I think there is a very good message that is present in the album, even in the first single. It's about being kind to the people you love and the people you don't, always smiling through the tough times, and that is the message that I wanted to give. Musically speaking this is a Pop Album where you can hear gospel and R&B influences. So I'm very glad that I had the chance to actually make this kind of album, I'm very happy!

Fantastic! This is your first album release in your career. When is the release date of this particular album?

It is the 17th of July, however, the first Single is officially out the week before, so on the 10th of July.

And the first single is "Give A Little Love"? Is there any reason you chose that song as the first release from the album?

When I finished recording the album, I just thought that I liked everything on the

10 July 2015

album, there was a little bit of everything on the album, but I was missing that positive part of me that always smiles. That is why I wrote this song with three other amazing authors and I just thought that it was such a good first single. I also think that it was a good preview of the album itself, as it gives a very positive message and you can hear the musical influences of the whole album, so we just thought that it was the right choice.

Excellent, will there be any shows or any stage performances to accompany the release of this album?

Well I recorded a live session the other day and that will go up on YouTube soon. I also have some promotional events planned on the week of the album release. As far as anything else goes, we are just waiting to see what happens and then I hope that live shows and performances will come!

Do you have a favourite? One song on the album that you prefer over all the rest? It's so hard because it changes all the time *laughs*. But at the moment it is definitely "Give A Little Love", it's the first single I'm actually sharing on the radio and I mean that's such a massive achievement, so this means a lot to me right now.

Call Oracle Magazine 01752 691007

Wonderful! You have had some remarkable highs in your life so far, including the rise to fame with the Xfactor in 2014. Now there is also the Xfactor in Italy, so what was the reason behind your decision to enter the Xfactor in the UK?

Yes, I actually tired in Italy and last year I went to the first stage of the auditions and I had approval from all the judges in Italy as well as the UK.

Obviously you had the approvals from all the judges from Italy and the UK at the same time?

Exactly, so I had to make the choice and I decided to come here, because I have always been a massive fan of the UK Xfactor. This is because I like the musical choices and I think that it's such a massive show, its international, so it was a huge risk! But I just told myself to try it, because I'm young and there is still time if I failed.

What was the fundamental point when you thought 'I'm going to go for this audition', whether it was for Italy or the UK Xfactor? What pushed you to actually do the Xfactor?

I think that the whole experience was lived with a sort of unconsciousness, because I knew inside of me that I wanted to be

www.oracle.uk.net

info@oracle.uk.net

a singer, that singing was everything I wanted to do in my life, but from my point of view I was like okay let's try this, but I wasn't expecting anything and that kind of feeling really helped me because I wasn't expecting anything from this experience. From the first moment when I went to the audition queuing with thousands of other people, I think that's what brought me here.

That's a great point to make and of course the British public love you over here as well. So when you sang on stage for the first time at the Xfactor audition, "I Didn't Know My Own Strength", there were many emotional tears from you and the judges, how overwhelming was it singing in front of them? How did you manage your nerves? Oh that was the most emotional experience of my life because I was the second last audition and I had waited all day long and it was such a good moment! I was in such a good mood all day and I wanted to express myself and show everyone who I was and what I could do. I felt very proud in that moment, seeing that kind of reaction from people was overwhelming and experiencing that kind of thing in first person is crazy! And it's still today one of the biggest memories from the Xfactor.

That leads me onto my next question; out of the whole experience of the

Xfactor, what was the best memory for you?

I think I would have to say boot camp but also Mexico and the judges houses. That was very good!

How proud were your parents of you? They flew over the UK didn't they, when you were on stage?

Yes, they are very proud, they are so happy, they haven't actually realised what's happened. I think when you are in a different country it's so hard to understand what is happening. And I haven't fully realised this either and I'm living this in first person, so I guess it is hard for them, but they are also so very happy!

Of course, and Mel B was your mentor at the time of the Xfactor, so do you still keep in touch with her now that the show is over?

Yeah we've been in touch a few times after the show, and she is so supportive and it's so good because it shows that even if the show is over, she is still very supportive and she was always honest with me. So it definitely wasn't just for the cameras and she's such a nice person, so it's good to be in touch with her.

Fantastic! So which artists inspire you the most and who do you enjoy listening to? Well I grew up listening to Stevie

Please mention Oracle Magazine when responding to adverts

Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Whitney Houston, Jasmine Sullivan, James Blake. One of my latest inspirations are artists like Jessie J and Sam Smith, Lianne La Havvos, Florence, so that's the kind of music I like.

Did you do any previous auditions in Italy before the Xfactor?

Yeah I did something, I tried twice on the Italian version of the Voice, but I didn't even get to go in front of the judges!

If you could give one piece of advice for anyone wanting to start a music career, what would it be?

I would say just to trust the timing of your life, trust your journey and trust yourself above all. Because I mean if there is something that you really like then you should follow your instincts, that's all I can say *laughs*.

And one last question, and this is mostly from the team here at Oracle. They want to know if you own or if you plan to buy any pugs!

*Laughs* Well I actually don't have a pug. I'm actually experiencing living alone for the first time; I've been learning how to look after myself and I need to do that before I learn how to look after a pug! Not yet but maybe in the future! Andrea’s album, ‘Kelly’, is out on the 17th of July and available online and in stores.

Sunset Rocks, San Andreas

California’s Sleeping Giant The San Andreas Fault Line marks the slippery yet sticky boundary between two of the earth’s tectonic plates. It is responsible for the biggest earthquakes in California, up to a magnitude of at least 8.1 on the Richter scale... By Nimra Imran For many years we have brushed away the notion of California ever being engulfed by the ocean. However, Geologists are predicting something almost as drastic; an earthquake centered at the San Andreas Fault Line could invoke a lot of vertical slip, which could conceivably put some of the California’s coastline under water. Geologists are predicting that it could be “any day now”.

Some geologists believe that the strain built up around the San Andreas Fault Line is already reaching the level that caused the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Others have claimed that the big day could be only a mere 100 years away.

see that there are actually many fractures and faults that mark the zone where the two plates slide against each other. On the west side of the fault sits most of California's population, riding the Pacific Plate northwest while the rest of North America inches south.

The ‘Pacific Plate’, which carries the Western Silver California, is sliding past North America at a rate of about 22 inches per year. Eventually the Los Angeles will slide under the Earth’s Crust near the Aleutian islands. Such an event talking place in our near future is not a matter of 'if' it will happen, but more a matter of 'when'.

The San Andreas Fault line was born about 30 million years ago in California, when the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate first met. Before then, another oceanic plate, the Farallon plate, was disappearing beneath North America at a subduction zone, another type of plate boundary. The new configuration meant that the two plates slid past one another instead of crashing into each other, a boundary called a strike - slip fault.

When viewed from space, the San Andreas Fault looks like a long, narrow valley that marks the point where the North American plate meets the Pacific plate. Stretching across 800 miles and being 10 miles deep within the rocks of California, this narrow break between the two plates is called a Fault. But upon a closer observation we can

The San Andreas Fault was the site of a massive effort to drill into the Earth's crust and investigate the fault at depth. In 2004, work began near the town of Parkfield on the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) to drill nearly two miles (3.2km) into the fault. Parkfield, in

Earth's surface along a 250 mile length, from San Juan Bautista to Cape Mendocino. The San Andreas Fault has been unusually quiet since these two big earthquakes in 1857 and 1906. Recently, studies looking at the fault's past earthquakes suggest that instead of popping off big earthquakes on a regular schedule, the fault seems to release its pent-up energy through earthquakes that vary in size and timing. Scientists now think the San Andreas Fault needs time to build up a critical stress level before it breaks again.

central California, pops off a moderate earthquake of around a magnitude of 6 every few decades, and is at the forefront for earthquake research. It was the sight of the first official earthquake prediction by the U.S. Geological Survey. Should another earthquake occur in the near future due to the movement of plates at San Andreas, much of San Francisco will be destroyed, and the Golden Gate Bridge will be washed away by a devastating tidal wave as shown in the image above. Scientists predicted that another earthquake should have occurred in 1993 but it didn't happen until 2004. Rocks retrieved from the deep drilling project

revealed that slippery clays may be responsible for some of the "creeping" behaviour along the San Andreas Fault. The central, creeping section includes everything from the Parkfield to Hollister. In historical times, this creeping section has not generated powerful earthquakes similar to those on the "locked sections". That's because the creeping section slowly, continuously moves, while the locked sections seem to get stuck. These stuck sections of the fault store energy

like springs, slowly building up strain until - sproing! - they suddenly unzip and slide past one another with enough force to cause an earthquake.

The largest earthquakes in California since European settlers arrived struck in 1857 and 1906 on the San Andreas Fault. The January 9th, 1857, Fort Tejon earthquake in Southern California,

Scientists now think the San Andreas Fault needs time to build up a critical stress level before it breaks again.

The great majority of California’s population lives in the vicinity of the San Andreas Fault. Some cities, towns, housing developments, and roads are actually built on it, and a tunnel of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART) is bored right through the fault zone. Measures taken to offset the danger from earthquakes include reinforcing roads and bridges to withstand tremors and constructing buildings to absorb seismic shocks. Alongside that plans are in motion to build new infrastructure away from earthquake prone areas to reduce economical damage and lower the number of deaths caused by the earthquakes. Authorities can implement guidelines on the location of new infrastructures and set limits on the height of buildings.

an estimated magnitude of 7.9, offset stream channels by as much as 29 feet (9m). A deadly fire in the growing city was triggered as a result and nearly 700 people were killed. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that a similar-size earthquake today, in the same location, would damage half the buildings in Los Angeles and San Francisco, destroy the cities' water supply and injure more than 50,000 people. Herb Pesto Pasta Salad

bbq portobello sliders

Ingredients: 2 cups dried pasta (ones with ridges are best) Salt 1/4 cup Sunflower Herb Pesto 1/3 cup kalamata olives, pitted and sliced in half 2 small kumato or heirloom tomatoes, sliced into small wedges 1 tsp raw Sunflower Seeds Fresh herbs for garnish (herbs are optional) How to Make: Bring a medium sauce pan filled with water to a boil, add a good amount of salt (you are looking for water like the ocean.) Add pasta and cook according to the box until al dente. While pasta is cooking, prep olives if needed (easiest if you purchase olives already pitted and sliced) & slice tomatoes into wedges. Place in a medium mixing bowl. Drain pasta and add to the mixing bowl along with the pesto. Stir until all ingredients are well mixed and pesto is evenly distributed among all ingredients. Transfer to a serving bowl (or serve from the mixing bowl) and top with fresh herbs & additional sunflower seeds. Serve chilled.

Ingredients: 4 portobello mushroom caps buns of your choice fixings of your choice: (sprouts, onion, tomato avocado, Vegan cheese, etc) For the sauce: 1 teaspoon olive oil ¼ onion, grated 1 clove of garlic, minced ¾ cup ketchup 2 tablespoons dijon mustard 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 2 tablespoons maple syrup 1 tablespoon Maggi Sauce ½ to 1 teaspoon sriracha or hot sauce salt and pepper, to taste. How to Make: Make the sauce in a small saucepan, heat oil. Add onion and garlic. Stir in the rest of the ingredients. If the mixture is not already bubbling, increase heat. Let it reduce and thicken, stirring occasionally. Taste and adjust seasonings to your liking - sweetness, spice level, salt, etc. Liberally brush both sides of the mushrooms with the sauce and let them marinade for at least 15 minutes, up to 30. Heat broiler or grill, cook mushrooms, flipping halfway through. Grill should be a few minutes per side. When mushrooms are done cooking, brush with more sauce and serve with whatever fixings you like.

How to Make: Combine all ingredients in food processor until smooth. Use a piping bag to get filling into the moulds (to avoid a mess). Tap the containers so that the air bubbles pop. Stick in the freezer overnight, or until they freeze. If your fudge sickles are hard to remove from their containers, run the popsickle mold under hot water briefly and the fudgesickles will come loose.

Guacamole Ingredients: 4 Ripe Avocados,1 Lime, juiced with some pulp, 3 Tablespoon Diced Jalapeño pepper, 1/4-1/2 Teaspoon Salt 1/4 Teaspoon Black Pepper,1/4 Teaspoon Garlic Powder,1/2 Cup Cilantro, chopped. How to Make: Remove the peel and pit from each avocado and place in a medium bowl. Gently mash with a fork, leaving it a little chunky. Help to Buy Scheme is not just for First Time Buyers... Jane Mulhern, Head of Conveyancing at Linnitts Solicitors, says that most people believe the Government Help to Buy Scheme is only available to first time buyers to help them onto the first rung of the property ladder. This is a misapprehension. The Help to Buy Equity loan scheme is available to homeowners looking to move as well as first time buyers. If you currently own a property and wish to move then this scheme is available to you. There are conditions that have to be met in order to be eligible including the home you want to buy must be newly built, with a price tag of up to and including ÂŁ600,000.00 and you must not own any other property at the time you buy your new home with a Help to Buy equity loan.

scheme works like any other mortgage in so far as your lender will check your ability to afford the mortgage and that you do not have a history of payment difficulties under your current or any previous mortgage held. Importantly under this scheme the home you wish to purchase does not have to be a newly built home. There are conditions that have to be met in order to qualify for this scheme including the property you are purchasing must not exceed ÂŁ600,000.00, you must not own any other property anywhere in the world at the time you buy your home supported by this scheme, the mortgage must be a under the repayment basis (not interest only, offset and guarantor mortgages, you cannot let the property during the term of the mortgage and the size of the mortgage you apply for must be less than 4.5 times your income.

these schemes please visit: www.helptobuy.org.uk. There are other schemes available to assist the low paid, old aged pensioners and disabled.

Anne Shears Solicitor

Anne Shears, a Solicitor with The Family Law Company in Plymouth looks at the pros and cons of getting divorced via an online service. In a world where digital communication is commonplace there are increasing numbers of companies offering an online divorce service. With some advertising a divorce for as little as £37 and promising a quick divorce, it is easy to understand the temptation to choose this route rather than approach a specialist family lawyer. However, careful research must be undertaken to avoid future difficulties and unnecessary charges. For example, the cheapest service may only provide you with copies of the Court documentation, which can be obtained free from the Court anyway. It takes a little digging to learn that the advertised price does not include the Court fee of £410. Some websites say the divorce can be completed ‘within a matter of weeks’. In reality, although the procedure is usually straightforward provided both parties cooperate, it will take time. There may be very good reasons not to finalise the divorce as soon as you are able to - for example to preserve pension rights whilst future financial arrangements are agreed and implemented. The Petitioner (the person asking for the divorce) sends a divorce petition to the Court. Provided it has been filled out correctly, the petition is then sent to the Respondent who must complete an Acknowledgment of Service and return it to the Court. Once the Petitioner receives a copy of the Acknowledgement, they complete a statement and make an application for Decree Nisi. If both parties co-operate fully it might be possible to get to this stage within about 4 weeks. Provided all is in order, the Court then sets a date for pronouncement of the Decree Nisi – usually two to three weeks after the application is made. Once the Decree Nisi has been pronounced, the six week period between Decree Nisi and Decree Absolute kicks in. So, even when both parties co-operate fully

28 July 2015

it is unlikely that a divorce will be concluded within less than three months. It is not uncommon for people who have just separated to want to get divorced and move on with their lives as quickly as possible, not least because many find separation such a painful experience - but unless there is complete co-operation between the parties, there are potentially many issues along the way that will cause difficulty without specialist guidance. It is important to understand that an online service is unlikely to provide the essential, specialist advice required to fully deal with the many complex issues that come with separation, such us how the money will be divided up, who will live in the house, or where the children are going to live. If you choose to use an on-line provider, you should understand that the majority do not have professional indemnity insurance and are operating without regulation. The risk here is that if something should go wrong, there will be no recourse through a regulator. Although you will have paid the company’s charges you may not have the promised result and it may then still be necessary for a specialist divorce lawyer to become involved to unpick what has been badly done. This could prove to be even more emotionally challenging and expensive than if the specialist had been involved from the start. Arguably, online divorce has its place. If

Call Oracle Magazine 01752 691007

you have only been married for a very short period of time, with completely separate finances and no children, it may be right for you. Similarly, there is also a place for a ‘DIY divorce’ - some couples very successfully conduct their divorce themselves. These people, though, are likely to seek specialist advice when it comes to matters concerning the finances or the children. What is crucial in resolving matters after separation is for both parties to have the time and advice to make informed decisions. Choices made during this very emotional and difficult time will have an impact on both parties’ future. The Family Law Company will support you through what can be a minefield for the unwary and ill-informed. We have trained experts to assist you with resolving finances, including pensions, and arrangements for your children. We offer a very reasonable fixed fee divorce service, which makes all of the costs, including the Court fee, clear upfront, helping to ensure that the divorce process is as stress free and swift as possible.

RADIOPLYMOUTH THE SOUND OF THE CITY

Radio Plymouth had a very good month in May! As well as covering a general election the city’s local radio station also had some good news regarding possibly winning an award! Every year the commercial radio industry celebrates the successes of its members with the Arqiva Commercial Radio Awards ceremony, held in London. This year Plymouth is represented as Radio Plymouth has been shortlisted for Commercial Radio Station of the Year in the category for stations with a maximum possible audience of under 500,000. Five radio stations have been shortlisted for the awards, which will be allocated as Gold, Silver and Bronze and Managing Director Tim Manns is delighted. “We entered with some trepidation, knowing how high the standard is around the country, so just to be shortlisted is a real achievement. The results are announced in July. Should we win an award I can promise there will be a big celebration!”

“David Cameron actually visited the city twice” For Marcus, election night was a long and sleep deprived affair, with the first results not coming in for Plymouth’s three seats until around 5.30am and the final one arriving by around 8am. It has been an exciting and exhausting few months.

“Radio Plymouth has been shortlisted for Commercial Radio Station of the Year in the category for stations” Meanwhile, covering a general election campaign with a news team of two was always going to be tough, but when the city becomes one of the key marginals, it presents extra challenges. Since January of this year, news editor Jane Atwill and journalist Marcus Liddell covered visits

Perhaps the most unusual was our encounter with Nigel Farage at a blustery Plymouth Airport on a Saturday morning in March. He was launching the campaign of one of the local candidates, Penny Mills, who had brought a caravan to advertise her policies. In the end, due to those winds, Nigel agreed to do the interview inside the caravan. As Jane said, “It has to rank amongst one of my more unusual weekends!” David Cameron actually visited the city twice; once in January to discuss the transfer of land at South Yard to the MOD and again in April to see the work of Age UK. Media access on these visits is carefully controlled, but it’s still a fascinating insight into the way modern
