Editor's Note... The skies over Plymouth’s Waterfront will be lighting up this month, as the spectacular British Firework Championships take place on the 18th and 19th of August. An amazing display of over four tonnes of fireworks will light up the sky, as six of the country’s top pyrotechnics companies battle it out to be named the British Fireworks Champion 2015. Whether you are an avid goer of the firework championships or have never been before, it is set to be an exciting evening for all the family. Find out more on page 10 . “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way it’s animals are treated” Ghandi. If animals could speak to us, we would be horrified at the manner in which we treat them. And yet we hail ourselves as the better species, the more educated ones, when in fact our actions illustrate the cruelty of human nature and our inability to grasp the concept that no being is lesser than us. Orcas are one such majestic species that belong in the wild. Flip to page 30 to find out how we can help these beautiful animals. August is also jam packed with excellent events happening all across the city so turn to page 18 to take a look at our What’s On Guide. I would also like to say goodbye to all our lovely readers; this will be my last issue as Editor for Oracle, as I am now leaving to go to University and onto new adventures. I hope you enjoy this issue of the Oracle Magazine, packed full of amazing features and offers, and stay tuned for more to come... Nimra Imran - Interim Editor

How Your Mind is Making You Fat By Barbara Burgess
We don’t generally see overweight animals, except perhaps those pampered pets who, on the whole, have the same issues with food as the humans who take care of them. This is because animals tend to eat to survive whereas we humans have so many other reasons to eat.
E
ating has become a social thing for us, a celebration, a token of love and care, a reward in good times or a comfort in bad times. We meet with friends for a coffee and cake or with a partner for a ‘romantic dinner for two’. If you are trying to lose weight, these social occasions can be as hard as going to a party can be for an alcoholic. Temptation is there on the dessert trolley and the buffet table, the supersize takeaways and the allyou-can-eat spread. And the worst part about this is that you have been taught that it’s a waste of food to leave some on your plate, or that you need to stuff yourself to get your money’s worth.
“low self-esteem makes you turn to food and the excess weight causes you to feel even worse about yourself” There is the crux; if you are overweight it is most likely that you have been taught some bad habits such as: Comfort Eating: often caused during childhood when an adult gives you a sweet or a biscuit to stop you crying when you are sad or hurt. This becomes any situation where you don’t feel good so that low selfesteem makes you turn to food and the excess weight causes you to feel even worse about yourself. Boredom Eating: often when people tell you that they eat when they are’ bored’ it doesn’t actually mean that they haven’t got anything to do. Like children who say they are bored, it generally means that any of the
things that they do have to do are not giving them the satisfaction they need.
“If you eat whilst doing something else, watching TV for instance, you eat more” Often their lives are not satisfying; they may be doing a job they dislike, trying to be something that they feel the ‘should’ be (not every stay-at-home mother is suited to the job!), in short, they are not following their own Passions. Eating Excessively: were you brought up to ‘clear your plate’ and ‘not waste food’? This becomes a deeply seated and unconscious habit. You may find yourself clearing other’s plates, especially the food your children have left unfinished. That ‘training’ switched off your natural ability to know when you have had enough.
“Temptation is there on the dessert trolley and the buffet table, the supersize takeaways and the all-you-can-eat spread”
Please mention Oracle Magazine when responding to adverts
Or perhaps you pile more on your plate than you need because you feel envious of others who can eat more and not put weight on. This is often caused by feelings of not being ‘as good’, for instance, growing up being compared to someone else or being given less (not necessarily food, perhaps attention) than a sibling. Eating Unconsciously: If you eat whilst doing something else, watching TV for instance, you eat more. Letting yourself to get too hungry may mean you ‘shovel’ food into your mouth not allowing you to smell, taste and savour the food.
“low self-esteem makes you turn to food and the excess weight causes you to feel even worse about yourself” These are just some of the ways your thinking can cause excess weight, and these issues have to be addressed if you ever hope to lose that excess for good.

PMR/GCA A CHARITY SUPPORTING PEOPLE WITH POLYMYALGIA
P
MR/GCA is a registered Charity run solely by volunteers all of whom have this debilitating disease, and whose main interest is in supporting those people and their families with PMR/GCA
Once diagnosed, treatment is with STEROIDS (Usually PREDNISOLONE) and recovery can be spectacular... ARE THERE ANY COMPLICATIONS?
In 2014 I had the good fortune of meeting Sally-Ann Morgan who had just formed a local Support Group in Plymouth. Like Sally-Ann I too suffered with PMR and had done for several years since 2008. Unfortunately, the nearest Support Group at this time was based in Taunton. Sally-Ann like so many of us found travelling very difficult as she also suffers from Myasthenia Gravis but despite her added illness decided to start a group based here in Plymouth. She felt this group could offer support and help, but also give and encourage a positive, shared self-help approach to others with this disease, but what is PMR/GCA you might ask, I certainly had no idea, that is until I was diagnosed with this illness myself before this time I had never heard or met anyone with this condition. POLYMYALGIA (PMR) Is an inflammatory condition that many people now believe to be a form of vasculitis. It is recognised to be an autoimmune illness.
Some people are diagnosed with PMRGCA, Giant cell (or temporal) arteritis, a related condition causing inflammation of arteries. It’s most important you contact a doctor urgently if you have PMR and notice any changes Its very important for everyone with PMR to be aware of the symptoms of Giant Cell Arteritis, as if left untreated it can lead to permanent vision damage. possibilities, such as rheumatoid arthritis, which have to be ruled out first. Your GP will take blood tests to test the ‘inflammatory markers’ in the body. The key tests are ‘ESR’ and ‘CRP’ WHAT IS THE TREATMENT?
Derek retired from the music scene 20 years ago, but has now decided to come out of retirement to help raise Awareness and funds in support of our PMR/GCA cause, all donations are given to the Charity. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTONS? It causes pain, tenderness and stiffness in the large muscles around the shoulders, hips and back. It generally affects older people and is rare in people under 50 and sometimes passed off as ‘the aches and pains of getting older’. However, people with PMR know the misery of constant discomfort and the fear and anxiety of suddenly not being able to move and get around.eg....Stiffness, pain, aching, and tenderness in the muscles around the shoulders, pelvis, and neck, worse first thing in the morning but easing during the day, HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED? LIGHT IT UP This month more than four tonnes of fireworks will be set off over Plymouth Sound (18th-19th of August), showering the skies with colour, as the country's top pyrotechnics companies battle it out for the coveted national title. By Nimra Imran The highly anticipated event in Plymouth's annual calendar will welcome thousands of spectators, heading to the Hoe for two spectacular evenings of entertainment, including the fantastic firework displays from this year's contestants. Plymouth Hoe will be the perfect viewing spot for this truly incredible sight and thousands of Plymouth residents and holiday makers are expected to turn up for the event. We will see displays from six contestants this year; 1st Galaxy Fireworks, Gala Fireworks, Fantastic

Fireworks, Spyrotechnics, Phoenix Fireworks and Essex Pyrotechnics. The contestants are selected each year by a draw in order to take part, three on each evening of the event. Additionally, every six years there is a Champions event when winners from the previous five years (plus the previous Champion-of-Champions winner) return to battle it out for the overall title Champion-of-Champions. The British Firework Championships were started in 1997 by the Event Services Association (TESA), a trade body representing the outdoor events industry in the UK. The Championships have grown hugely and are now recognised as the premier annual display in the UK, attracting tens of thousands to the city each August. Despite varying weather conditions over the years - and even a World War II bomb being found on the site - the event has successfully taken place every year since it started. Entertainment will start from around 6pm with live

As the Hoe is the focal point for watching the Championships, entertainment will be provided throughout both evenings. Believed to be Britain's most spectacular fireworks display, the British Firework Championships offer a visual treat, certainly not to be missed.

“Our new Make it Digital Traineeship is a hugely ambitious partnership, one we hope will unlock Britain’s digital potential and create genuinely life-changing opportunities for young people.” Achievement Training are joining forces with the BBC and the Department for Work & Pensions as part of a new “Make It Digital” initiative. The scheme will see up to 5,000 young unemployed people being offered Traineeships that will help them toboost their digital skills and help them get a foot on the jobs ladder. Sue Stoddard of Achievement Training said they are delighted to be working alongside the BBC and Job Centre Plus to deliver this new and exciting programme which aims to inspire a new generation to get creative with coding, programming and digital technology. We are holding a launch event on Tuesday 4th August from 10 am at the City College Plymouth PACE building 15-17 Union Street, Plymouth. This event is open to anyone aged 16-24 interested in enrolling onto the programme, please call 01752 202260 for further details.
T
he eight-week traineeship:
• includes training from the world-renowned BBC Academy; • teaches basic digital skills, such as creating simple websites and short videos for the web; • gets young people ready for work with employability skills and a work placement; • is the largest traineeship of its kind a major partnership between the BBC, Department for Work and Pensions and Skills Funding Agency, supported by a range of other organisations. Tony Hall, BBC Director-General, announced the BBC Make it Digital Traineeship in March 2015, which will be launched around the country next month. It forms a key part of the BBC’s flagship Make it Digital initiative. Achievement Training is delighted to confirm that they will begin delivery under the scheme from 17 August. Make it Digital aims to inspire a new generation to get creative with coding, programming and digital technology.
“Our new Make it Digital Traineeship is a hugely ambitious partnership, one we hope will unlock Britain’s digital potential and create genuinely life-changing opportunities for young people.” It will be the largest traineeship of its kind owing to an ambitious partnership between the BBC, Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) and Skills Funding Agency, supported in the South West by Achievement Training in Plymouth. The scope and unprecedented scale is expected to create a more diverse, better skilled digital workforce, and offer potentially life-changing opportunities for many young people. The Traineeship aims to grow basic level digital skills and prepare trainees for employment or progression into apprenticeships. The programme has been designed to be highly relevant to the small and medium business sector, where we know these skills are in short supply across the UK.
“ Make it Digital aims to inspire a new generation to get creative with coding, programming and digital technology”
The content has been created by the BBC Academy, working with the Tech Partnership, drawing on existing BBC training and involving major brands to help inspire Trainees in a eight-week course. There will be five weeks’ classroom-based training in two broad areas: • Basic digital skills - such as planning social media campaigns by deconstructing Radio 1’s Wrecking Ball campaign, building simple websites and creating short videos for the web • Employability skills - including how to give and receive feedback, using The Great British Bake Off. Other key skills include budgeting, basic project management, team working, English and maths. The final stage of the Traineeship is a three-week structured work placement, with the focus on selecting companies who are likely to require basic-level digital skills. The DWP’s nationwide Jobcentre Plus network will play a crucial role talent-spotting and identifying suitable candidates, who will be invited to take part by their Jobcentre Work Coaches.

The programme is funded through the Adult Skills Budget, run by the Skills Funding Agency, and will be delivered by high-quality external training providers around the country.

Here Comes
The Sun! We have one month left to make the most of the nice weather and the summer holidays. To help you make the most of it, we have compiled a list of a few things to do before the summer is over to help you bow out in style. By Henry Rogers
TAKE A ROAD TRIP TO THE BEACH ... TRY SOMETHING YOU HAVE NEVER DONE BEFORE ... Why not use the time off to try something you’ve never done before? It’s never too late to learn something new and summer is the perfect time to do it. Something like surfing or rock climbing are both exciting activities and they are also a great way of exercising which is a bit more out-ofthe-ordinary. Most beaches in Cornwall offer surfing lessons for a cheap price and surfboards are super cheap to rent, so it’s a great excuse to get in the sea. The Life Centre offers rock climbing for all ages with Pebble Climbing for 4-7 year olds and a Rockstart introductory session for anyone over the age of 16. You can find out more by contacting them on 01752 606900. You could even try your hand at something creative like gardening. Use the nice weather as an excuse to get outside and finally sort out all the gardening that has been hanging over you for weeks. Gardening can be therapeutic and gives you the chance to be creative or gives you the chance to grow your own produce which is environmental friendly. There is always something new to learn and try your hand at!
“It’s never too late to learn something new and summer is the perfect time to do it.” 22 August 2015
For those of you who haven’t gone to the beach yet this summer, now is your chance! We previously listed some of the best beaches of Devon & Cornwall back in June and now would be a great time to visit some of them before the summer is out. Make the most of the day and turn getting there into a road trip by taking more scenic routes or by compiling a summery playlist to accompany your journey making the whole day a great summer’s day out. Once at the beach, you can make the most of the sea as most local beaches offer nice areas for swimming and snorkelling and the rock pools and caves some beaches possess can offer great chances for the kids to explore.
BBQ WITH FRIENDS OR FAMILY...
what you’re eating is detrimental to you. You can check out last month’s issue for some great BBQ recipes.
GO TO AN OUTDOOR CONCERT ... There are few better ways to spend sunny days than sitting outside with a cold drink listening to music with the atmosphere of a concert. There are many festivals in the surrounding area catering to all tastes of music and ranging from one day events such as the Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza at the beginning of the month in Somerset to something that lasts all weekend like Boardmasters in Newquay. For those wanting to go further afield, the iconic Reading and Leeds festivals take place on August Bank Holiday Weekend and they remain one of the best ways to see out the summer.
Summer is synonymous with BBQs so why not use one as an opportunity to catch up with loved ones? There is nothing better than a few drinks and some lovely food with friends and family on a nice summer’s day. Whether you do it in your back garden or somewhere such as the Hoe, it’s a great excuse to socialise and you get a lovely view of the sunset at the end of the evening. Healthy options always exist for BBQs nowadays so there is no need to worry about whether or not

hat are my parental rights now I’m separated? By Derek Jordan Derek Jordan, a Solicitor with The Family Law Company in Plymouth, answers some common questions about Parental Responsibility when a couple separates. Q - I have just separated from my girlfriend after being together for over five years – we have two children aged three and a half years and eighteen months. Since we separated two months ago, the mother has only let me see the children at the house infrequently and for very short periods. She has also told me that because she is the mother and the children live with her, I have no rights and she will decide what happens with the children. Is it correct that I have no rights as their father? A. No, that’s not correct. Whilst everyone can be said to have ‘rights’, in legal terms what is more important is whether you have Parental Responsibility (PR) for your children. The definition of PR is conferring upon a person all the rights, duties, powers, responsibilities and authority that a parent ordinarily has towards a child. Essentially, PR means having the ability to make decisions for a child, deciding, for example, day-to-day things like where you take them, who you introduce them to and who you leave them with (e.g. grandparents who may be babysitting). For major decisions about a child’s welfare, such as schooling and medical treatment, a person with PR will have the right to be consulted. In your case, if you have PR for the children you will be entitled to obtain information about them from schools, GPs, dentists etc. without having to go via the mother. I often receive requests to contact a child’s school asking them to note on their records that a person has PR for a particular child and wants to receive specific information about them and have their own copy of reports or photographs.

Derek Jordan Specialist Solicitor
Q. In this case I wasn’t married to the mother. Does this mean I don’t have PR? A. Not necessarily. If you had been married to the mother you would automatically have PR but since 2003, unmarried fathers also have PR if they have been named as the father on a child’s birth certificate. Q. If I don’t have PR, is there any way I can now get it? A. Yes, there are various ways you can obtain PR if you are not on the birth certificate. You could enter into a formal ‘Parental Responsibility Agreement’ with the mother if she is willing to do so. If she is not, you could make an application to the court for an Order giving you PR. However, before any application to the court is made, you are likely to have to try mediation. I always suggest mediation in cases where it is appropriate because it is an excellent way for parents to meet on neutral ground to discuss what the arrangements should be for their children. It’s important to note that a father does not have to have PR to pursue regular time with their child. Q. If I do have PR does that mean that the mother will have to let me have the children when I say?
Call Oracle Magazine 01752 691007
A. It’s not that simple and it is rarely right for either party simply to dictate to the other what will happen. How things are sorted out will still rely on you and the mother negotiating and agreeing what the arrangements will be. Any arrangements will have to be workable for both parents but most importantly be best for the children. I always encourage clients to work with the other parent (where it is safe for them to do so) to reach such an agreement and only make an application to the court when absolutely necessary or to formalise an agreement. The actual arrangements made will be different for each family and, of course, will probably need to be altered over time to adapt to life’s changes and circumstances. The ideal outcome is that there is regular, good quality time for the children to spend with their mother and with you, as well as a sharing of school holidays and important occasions such as birthdays and Christmas wherever possible.

Interview by Nimra Imran Photographs by Tom Coles Hindhead Property Sales and Lettings was launched in March 2015 when Director, Darren Desmond identified a gap in the market place. INTO THE GREAT SILENCE
By Nimra Imran
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way it’s animals are treated” Ghandi. If animals could speak to us, we would be horrified at the manner in which we treat them. And yet we hail ourselves as the better species, the more educated ones, when in fact our actions illustrate the cruelty of human nature and our inability to grasp the concept that no being is lesser than us.
Captive exotic animals are abused and exploited in a variety of settings, including research and product testing, the entertainment industry, fur farms, and the exotic ‘pet’ trade. We destroy the skies, pollute the oceans and yet we have the audacity to call ourselves the superior beings. It is now becoming common knowledge that we have more to learn from animals than they have to learn from us. With the recent attention from films such as ‘Blackfish’, the reality of animals in captivity has been brought to the forefront of our world, with numerous campaigns already in place to put an end to this cruelty.
“
Killer whales, more commonly known as Orcas, have been kept in captivity since 1961, helpless victims of a blatantly commercial experiment which has seen dozens of wild animals plucked from

their families and forced to live in an artificial social grouping which bear a heartbreakingly scant resemblance to their natural order.
of these orcas in captivity is only 9, and Orcas at aquarium parks rarely make it even to the average life expectancy of their wild cousins.
There are currently a total of fifty seven Orcas held in captivity, in at least fourteen different marine parks, in eight different countries. At least 148 Orcas have been taken into captivity from wild since 1961. A horrifying 126 of these orcas are now dead, not including the 30 miscarried or still born calves. SeaWorld currently holds 24 orcas in its 3 parks in the United States and owns at least a further 4 at Loro Parque in Spain.
In the wild, despite the centuries of sharing the ocean there has been only a single reliable report of an orca harming a human being. Because of the stress involved in being deprived of everything that is natural and important to orcas in captivity, orcas have killed three humans just since 1991 and many others have been injured. Due to the high levels of stress, all captive adult males have collapsed dorsal fins, likely
One of the most famous captures saw over 80 whales from the Southern Resident population of Orcas in Washington State rounded up at Penn Cove in 1970. 7 whales were taken into captivity while as many as 5 died. As a result, the Orca Population is now recognised as endangered. With recent research and observation of these stunning animals, we have a plethora of reasons why these animals need to be released in the wild and all orca captures and breeding need to be banned with immediate effect. Orcas in the wild have a life span of 60 to 70 years for males and 80 to 90 years for female. The average age
because they have no space in which to swim freely and are fed an unnatural diet of a thousand dead fish. Aquariums, like Sea World, claims that this is condition is common - however, in the wild it rarely ever happens and it is a sign of an injured or an unhealthy orca. Orcas are highly social animals who live in stable social groups ranging from two to fifteen individuals. In some populations, children stay which their mothers for life. In captivity, orcas are forced to live with orcas from other family units who speak a completely different language than they do, and are moved constantly between facilities for breeding and to perform up to as many as six shows a day. In the wild, orcas have strong social bonds, that last for life, their social rules prohibit serious violence against each other, and when fights do occur they can find space to flee. In captivity, there’s nowhere for them to go, which leads to injuries and death. Orcas in captivity also gnaw at iron bars and concrete from stress, anxiety and boredom, sometimes breaking their teeth, which results in painful dental drilling without anaesthesia. On top of this, orcas in captivity are rarely ever given the food that they would consume in the wild. Orcas are able to hunt and obtain water and nutrition from their prey. SeaWorld gives them gelatin, a substance that is not natural for orcas, in attempt to keep them hydrated. Tilikum alone, who weighs 12,000 pounds, consumes 83 pounds of gelatin everyday. Orcas suffer mentally and physically just to line SeaWorld's pockets. The growing uneasiness with the concept of keeping orcas in captivity has only been increased by the renowned documentary, 'Blackfish', illustrating the reality of the captives' existence. “Blackfish” also highlighted the harsh
treatment of these orcas by SeaWorld. Orcas spend most of their time at SeaWorld floating listlessly at the surface of the water with little to no shade from the hot blistering sun. In the wild, Orcas spend up to 95% of their time submerged in water and would find shade at the depths of the ocean. However, at SeaWorld, their tank is a mere 40 feet deep, not deep enough to give them a reprieve from the harsh elements.
“Trapped in a miniscule tank, with no escape from the tropical heat” Because of this, Orcas have perpetual sunburns, which are shielded from public eye with help of black zinc oxide, which matches their skin. Orcas almost always have sunburns before zinc oxide is applied. The Orca is the largest animal ever to be taken into captivity. The largest ever orca on record in captivity, Tilikum, is endowed with six tons of physical strength coupled with tremendously complex brain power. Trapped in a miniscule tank, with no escape from the tropical heat and surrounded by souvenir shops, popcorn stands, ear-deafening music and applauding audiences, all of Tilikum’s powerful potential is methodically subjugated by man made constructions of impenetrable walls and metal bars. The inherent wrong of subjecting an ocean-roaming and exceptionally social animal
to solitary confinement with nothing to do is phenomenal. The only sophistication to be found in Tilikum’s impoverishing incarceration is in Tilikum himself. SeaWorld is woefully wrong when they boast they have constructed the largest and most sophisticated habitat for killer whales. SeaWorld has constructed no such thing; only nature has. Despite the best attempts of display industry to blow a smokescreen over such negative publicity, the wider world is now increasingly aware that all is not well in fantasy-land. It's high time that we end this cruelty towards not just orcas but all animals living in captivity. Otherwise we as a species are worse off than we ever imagined ourselves to be...

efurnish is a charity that takes great pride in the work that they do. Their principle aims are to help people on low incomes by providing low cost reusable furniture at discounted prices and reduce the waste in your local community.
Refurnish doors are open to everyone and they offer a friendly service both from their staff and volunteers. Free collection is also available for all of your large items of furniture which can be resold and for all white goods which are in working order. To take advantage of this call their central number on 01752 927002 and select the number of the branch you would like to donate to. You’ll be asked a few questions and then booked in for a viewing of the items on offer. Building work at their Wrangaton HQ is well under way and opening new doors for the community household reuse project. Now the building controls have given them approval to create a rear door so the furniture area will now increase in size giving
more space for an improved shop layout. This will also allow the new upcycling project to get under way which involves looking at new ways to reuse some of the more difficult items needing rehoming. The ideas include making planters out of pallets and reupholstering some of the good quality sofas that are kindly donated.
“We passionately believe in recycling,” said Refurnish’s David Banks, “but the project is also a vehicle to help reduce social isolation and give a sense of purpose for people who may be unemployed or retired and may have a variety of support needs by providing volunteering, training and employment.” The charity is always looking for people with spare time and skills who would like to get involved in the project from drivers mate to shop assistant or who can offer training in upholstery, wood work or general maintenance. If you want to help or get involved in any way, call David Banks on 01364 73206, email davidbanks@refurnish.org. uk, or visit our website www.refurnish.org.uk

A Frozen World :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
News of another ‘mini ice age’, predicted by scientists to head our way in fifteen years, has dominated recent headlines. The last mini ice age occurred in the eighteenth century; is history about to repeat itself? Is the phenomenon of a second Maunder Minimum heading our way? By Harri McClure :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
According to many years of research, scientists predict that long-term trends of ongoing reduced solar activity may lead to a mini ice age in the year 2030. At the National Astronomy Meeting earlier this year, the Royal Astronomical Society predicted that activity of the sun will fall by 60% in fifteen years time.
number of sunspots indicated a lower amount of solar magnetic activity. Sunspots represent cooler areas on the surface of the sun. Some of them are so large, they could consume the Earth whole; in fact, one recorded in 1947 measured 18 times larger than the Earth’s surface area.
The last historical period in which levels of solar activity reached its lowest peak occurred in the 1700s, during an era known as the Maunder Minimum, which lasted between 50 and 60 years. During this period, numbers of sunspots fell to an all-time low; amounting to asignificant drop in temperature across the UK and Europe, as the lower the
Sunspots crop up due to concentrations of magnetic field, resulting in a cooler temperature because the intense magnetic field reduces the flow of hot gases from the sun’s centre to its surface; a sunspots surface temperature can range between 2,700 - 4,200 degrees Celsius, lower than the surrounding surface temperature

which is around 5,800. Each unique sunspot cycle, or ‘heartbeat’, lasts approximately 11 years, and in this time the number of sunspots can rise to more than 100, decreasing back to 0 at the end of the cycle. The time at which there is little to no sunspot activity is named the solar minimum, hence the name ‘Maunder Minimum’ for when there was no activity for 50-60 years. Northumbria University’s Professor Valentina Zharkova and her colleagues analysed magnetic fields over a period of 3 sunspot cycles. They discovered that when magnetic waves are out of synchronisation, it resulted in a significant drop in solar activity.

The same conditions that froze London in the 1700’s could happen again
The last time magnetic waves were unsynchronised occured during the Maunder Minimum in the 1700’s, and Zharkova’s model predicts that the waves will next come exactly out of sync in the decade of 2030-2040, sparking the fear that Earth may be subjected to the bitter cold. Mike Lockwood, professor of Space Environment Physics at the University of Reading, offers the explanation that solar changes may affect different regions in different ways. His research suggests there was little evidence that the reduced global mean temperatures between 1400 and 1800 were caused by solar activity, but in fact there’s more evidence it was associated with volcanic activity, therefore the sun played a minor part in the temperature drop. If history is to repeat itself, and another period similar to the Maunder Minimum is
indeed looming over us, we can expect much colder winters as solar radiation will be much less intense, producing less heat to warm the atmosphere. However, it will be nothing alike to any ice age that one would imagine to see in a blockbuster film! Back in the 1700s, temperatures reached a low enough peak to freeze the entire River Thames in London, however times have most certainly progressed in 300 years; in today’s world we have the technological facilities to protect us from the freezing conditions, so the ‘mini ice age’ may not be alarming as it sounds. In fact, the mini ice age may not even occur after all. Other scientists argue that the effects of reduced solar activity will not be noticed by us at all on Earth. Jim Wild, Professor of Space Physics at Lancaster University, proposes that while there is a link between fluctuations in solar activity and climate change, the increase of global warming means that we will not notice the effects of reduced solar activity. Experts argue that it is mainly the emission of greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which causes global warming, whereas others have used studies of the sunspot cycle to suggest it is the suns increased solar activity that has led to Earth’s global

warming and the warming of other planets in our solar system. Georg Feulner of the Potsdam Institute on Climate Change Research studied into what might happen to the earth’s climate in the event of a Maunder Minimum. Feulner’s research also revealed that a sudden temperature drop would be insignificant in the midst of global warming. How could Earth possibly be heading for a ‘mini ice age’ when we are experiencing global warming? How can we experience another Maunder Minimum when the polar ice-caps are melting, our oceans are warming and sea-levels are reaching a record high? There is indeed the possibility that if predictions are correct, and sunspot activity does fall to a minimum in 2030, the same conditions that froze London in the 1700s could happen again. But, as the sun’s influence on our climate is minute compared to the effect of greenhouse gases, and the correlation between sunspot activity and the Earth’s climate still remains mysterious, the risk and likelihood of experiencing a mini ice age is low. Dig out your warmest scarves and gloves, just in case!
