HEALTH & BEAUTY

Beautiful Lily’s Salon: Jayne Rainbow’s business venture At Beautiful Lily’s, Jayne offers a wide range of treatments ranging from simple eyebrow waxing to relaxing aromatherapy treatments, reflexology, Indian head massage and beauty therapy, all using a wide range of highly reputable products.

I

n her late teens, Jayne saw an advert in the local newspaper for an eight week introductory course in aromatherapy massage. She thoroughly enjoyed the course and, with encouragement, decided to study for a diploma in anatomy and physiology, Swedish body massage and aromatherapy. Despite battling with depression, she qualified in 2000 and continued to train as a reflexologist at Plymouth College, gaining an NVQ qualification in 2001, and going on to learn the art of Indian head massage. It was during this course that she became pregnant with her first child, but persevered and gained qualification in 2005. Having worked in various beauty salons, she decided to take some much needed

time out after the birth of her daughter and spent a year as a “stay at home mum” until a former colleague persuaded her to train in beauty therapy. She again fell pregnant during the course and again managed to finish, passing with flying colours. Desperate to get back to work she decided to work from home. A garage conversion created an ideal salon and the only question left was what to name it. With her children very much now the centre of her life, she decided to name the business after Beau and Lily. As ever, looking after two children and running a business was a struggle and Jayne found herself continually tired, stressed and once again entering the depths of depression. Following a diagnosis with M. E. in 2010, and numerous trials and attempts with anti-depressants and diet changes in an attempt to increase her energy levels, she was introduced to the popular food supplement JuicePLUS+. Surprisingly, just a few weeks after taking the powdered fruit and vegetable capsules, she noticed a big difference in her moods and energy to the point where she agreed to run (and completed) the Brighton marathon, raising money for a friend’s daughter who suffers with a rare degenerative disease. She also found recovery after training was helped by taking the JuicePLUS+ complete shakes and, following such a positive personal experience with the product, also became a representative for the business.

On top of everything else, Jayne is also an ambassador for Tropic Skin Care products which are made with the finest natural ingredients to take the very best care of skin, using the products in her salon as well as selling them. She is also trained by Dermalogica but wanted a product that was more natural and more affordable. In addition to Tropic, Jayne also uses well known brands including Lauren’s Way (from the Only Way Is Essex) Spray Tan and Couture eyelashes. “I always dreamt of having my own salon and Beautiful Lily’s fits perfectly around my family life. With my low overheads, I am able to offer very competitive prices, have regular clients and thoroughly enjoy what I do. If I can help someone feel better about themselves in any way, then I feel I have done my job”. Jayne is pleased to offer all new customers 50% off all Alternative Therapies booked at Beautiful Lily’s this February. Please call, email or visit the website to book an appointment or to find out more about JuicePLUS+ or Tropic products.

Let’s Get Physical! Over-indulged at Christmas? Feeling miserable in the winter months? For many, exercise is the cure to both of these issues.

e sometimes take for granted the benefits of regular exercise. There’s the obvious calorie burn and improvement to your cardiovascular health, but have you considered the impact of exercise on your mental health?

W

Even a short burst of 10-minute brisk walking, can increase mental alertness, energy and positive mood. However, what if you’re injured in an accident and you can’t exercise? For many people who suffer a physical injury, they don’t think about the consequences to their mental health. Often the focus is on repairing the injury which hopefully gets you back to fitness and active again, but what if you won’t make a full recovery? We know the frustration clients feel if they can’t play football, go for a swim or even just walk the dog. Often an injury makes you realise how important these things are to your day- to-day happiness.

“There is a lot we can do to help you get physical again!” At Chris Kallis Solicitors, we only specialise in injury compensation claims. We know from experience and understand that we have to look beyond just your physical injury. We appreciate that being restricted physically can get you down and these issues need to be addressed and taken into account when obtaining treatment and assessing the value of your claim. We offer a friendly, approachable and personal service to our clients. We want you to feel able to discuss your worries and concerns with us, because we want to ensure that we get the best possible outcome for you with the least amount of worry about the process of making a claim.

• We can help to obtain interim payments to reduce your financial worries • We can help to obtain rehabilitation to assist your physical recovery • We can help to obtain rehabilitation treatment to improve your psychological wellbeing There is a lot we can do to help you get physical again! Come and speak to us if you have had an accident, because we understand and want to help.

“We offer a friendly, approachable and personal service to our clients.”

LEISURE

Kiss the Clichés goodbye this Valentine’s Day... The flood of chocolates in red heart boxes, and numerous orders of rose bouquets and restaurant phones ringing off their hooks announces the arrival of a holiday made for lovers. Like birthdays, Valentine’s Day becomes repetitive after a few years. If fancy dinners aren’t your cup of tea anymore, pour your eyes over some of these charming ideas that will battle the season’s predictability and make this Valentine’s Day one for the books! By Nimra Imran

T

o ensure that this Valentine’s Day cuts above the rest we’ve compiled a list of quirky date ideas that are sure to score you points in the creativity department, and with your other half! So get planning, becuase after all, what is romance without a little adventure?

As the saying goes, love is in the air! There are a number of ways you and your honey can experience adventure through

the air, and I don’t mean hopping on a plane. Hot air balloons are the carriages of love this season, and they allow you and your other half to experience the great blue yonder in a unique manner. Take in the breathtaking scenery at a slower, more relaxed pace and fall in love all over again.

“quirky date ideas that are sure to score you points in the creativity department, and with your other half!”

Or why not plan a more low key date, fresh with new promise of intimacy and romance. Gazing at the night sky from your favourite spot, holding hands and leaning in each other’s arms can be one of the most memorable moments with your loved one, and throw in a midnight picnic basket and some champagne; this date will surely be one that you won’t easily forget!

caraway seeds and raisins. Check out the lovely traditions different cultures have to offer and incorporate them into your date night for a truly unique experience!

Every culture celebrates the day of love in their own unique manner. For instance, in Japan, women give men chocolates on February 14th. On the other hand, some parts in England serve buns baked with

As we all know, a lot of people dismiss Valentine’s as a day where cheesiness reigns supreme, so why not shrug off the corny ideas and plan something creative and original; be a tourist in your own home town! Plan a few touristy activities that you and your partner have never gotten around to experiencing, and don’t be embarrassed to take a bucket load of pictures while visiting these attractions.

love in the first place. For all the romantics out there, this date night will definitely be one for the books!

For a more hearty date night, gather a bunch of your friends at someone’s house for a stay at home group date and split the duties! For instance, men buy the flowers, cook and serve dinner to the women, while the women plan games, decorate or provide gifts (baked goods are very popular!). Keep in mind that if your party consists of singles and couples, you may want to ensure that there is an even number of single men and women so that no one ends up feeling like a third wheel! Another interesting date night idea is a couple’s massage! Release the tension and stress together with a couple’s massage package at a local spa or indulge yourself and your better half to a full, luxurious spa day. Or go old school and recreate your first date! Whether you split a milkshake or spilt it all over your date’s lap, we think that the first time you went out is a sweet way to remember why and how you fell in

Cooking together is a rewarding experience indeed so why not take advantage of any cooking classes and gourmet food shops in your area. But instead of going for the tried and true cuisines like pasta, try something a little more adventurous, something different from what you would normally order at a restaurant and then recreate it at home with your honey! As they say, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach!

bucket list. Take this as an opportunity to find out if there’s some overlap between the two of yours. Maybe you both want to go skydiving or paragliding or maybe only one of you want to, but the other one is game to join in. Either way, tackling a bucket list item together guarantees an out of the ordinary Valentine’s Day.

“Whether you split a milkshake or spilt it all over your date’s lap we think that the first time you went out is a sweet way to remember why and how you fell in love.” And finally to make sure your Valentine’s Day goes out with a bang, dig out that

EATING & DRINKING

Pancakes Galore!

There is hardship in everything… except eating pancakes. By Nimra Imran.

A

s we shovel pancakes into our mouths on Shrove Tuesday, like there’s no tomorrow, many of us seldom stop to think about the origins of this joyful day. And if you’re a food lover like me, I’m sure you’ll agree that a WHOLE day dedicated to pancakes is indeed a joyful day! However if we turn back the clock and dig out those dusty history books, we can see that Pancake Day has been long established into the roots of numerous cultures and traditions. Like many other European holidays, Pancake Day was originally a pagan holiday. Before the Christian Holiday era, the Slavs believed that the change of the seasons was a struggle between the god of vegetation, fertility and springtime, and the evil spirits of cold and darkness. People believed that they had to help Jarilo, the god, to fight against Winter and bring in the Spring. The most important part of shrovetide week was making and eating pancakes. The hot, round pancakes symbolised the sun! The Slavs believed that by eating pancakes they got power, light and warmth of the sun. The first pancake was usually put on a window sill for the spirits of the ancestor. On the last day of shrovetide week some pancakes and other food were burnt in a bonfire as a sacrifice to the pagan gods.

“The hot, round pancakes symbolised the sun!” Practically, pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, flour and sugar before the fasting season of the forty days of lent. The liturgical fasting emphasised eating plainer food and refraining from food that would give pleasure; in many cultures this means no consumption of meat, dairy products or eggs. Pancake day is also called Shrove Tuesday; the word shrove originated from the old English word ‘shrive’, meaning ‘to confess’. In the middle ages, people used to confess their sins so that they were forgiven before the season of the lent began. Numerous places have their own unique traditions for Pancake Day. For instance, in Newfoundland and Cape Breton Island, small tokens are frequently cooked in the pancakes. Children take delight in discovering objects, which are intended to be divinatory. For example, a person who receives a coin will be wealthy, while a nail on the other hand, suggests that the person will become or marry a carpenter! So the next time you take a bite of your sugar and lemon smothered pancake, you’ll know the significance behind such a sweet day and know why we celebrate it, even though no excuses are ever needed to consume pancakes! Happy Pancake Day!

The Caribbean The Caribbean is one of the best holiday destinations this winter season, and should be on the top of your list if you’re in the mood for sun, sea and sand. With sublime weather and after the peak season of Christmas and the New Year, the prices are very friendly to your bank account. Head to Barbados for glitzy restaurants and brilliant hotels. The Cayman Islands, Tobago and Jamaica have great opportunities for diving in crystal clear waters, while Grenada is a gorgeous, under-rated island. Prague Renowned as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Prague has provided inspirations for many writers and captured the hearts of numerous visitors to the Czech Republic. Far from being a traditional city, however, the capital is full of quirky attractions, a vibrant art scene and an almost obsessive love of beer. Perfect for a winter escape, you can iceskate in the city centre before getting cosy in a tavern and tucking into some hearty European food with an obligatory Pilsner.

Budapest It is acclaimed that there is something quite magical about sitting outdoors in one of the city’s thermal pools watching the steam rise around you. Then nipping into the historic coffee houses for a slice of cake and a hot drink, a perfect way to warm up after exploring this stunning historical city.

Reykjavik The Maldives A term loosely used these days, paradise may be an accurate description for the Maldives islands. Leave Jack Frost behind this winter and spend your time playing beach volleyball, scuba diving and jet skiing on one of the idyllic islands. Visibility of the water at this time of year is incredibly clear, enticing many to snorkel the turquoise waters and see the abundance of sea life that lies under the surf.

Soak in a thermal pool and delight in schnapps with the northern lights dancing over head. Reykjavik in the winter season is absolutely magical. Pool night, where the city’s famed public baths throw open their doors for free until midnight, is one of the highlights of the Annual Winter lights festival; a four day celebration which

takes over the streets of the Icelandic capital. This one is for the books and certainly not to be missed.

Swedish Ice Castles Unlike anything that has ever been seen before, the Swedish city of Jukkasjarvi brings you the iconic ice hotels. With building commencing in December, rooms are rented out as sections of the hotel are completed. You can have drinks in the ice bar, learn ice sculpting, go snowballing or enjoy a warm drink with a glorious view of the northern lights overhead.
