Rehabilitation following an Accident If you make a personal injury claim with us, we will work hard to help you get the compensation you deserve. But we also know that you might need specialist medical care, in the form of rehabilitation and support.

R

ehabilitation makes a huge difference to the lives of our injured clients. We have direct contacts with many local medical experts, therapists, carers and support workers. For our unfortunate clients who have very serious or catastrophic injuries, we have strong links with professional case managers. This means that we are able to instruct case managers, support workers and care providers to ensure that you get the care and rehabilitation you need and, just as importantly, when you need it most. Rehabilitation can give back the independence lost due to injury or illness. Timely care helps get lives back on track. When we see our clients we find out what they want to achieve and what’s important to them and their family. Often compensation is far from their immediate concern. We endeavour to put in place a rehabilitation regime that works best for the particular client and their family, so we go to great lengths to make sure they are happy with their programme of support. Once we understand what rehabilitation you need, we will help plan and put in place your treatment. This may mean we refer you to a specialist medical expert, therapist or case manager. If you already have rehabilitation treatment on the NHS, we will work alongside the NHS to help you access any other additional care and support that you need. We always liaise with your GP when necessary to ensure that all critical health

The NHS does a great job of looking after people who are injured. Unfortunately NHS funds are often stretched and a lot depends upon the resources available, you might not always get the aftercare or rehabilitation you would ideally like and sometimes there are long waiting lists. This is where our involvement can really help. Rehabilitation means different things to different clients. Some people want to be able to return to work, some want to regain their mobility or overcome their depression as soon as possible, while others want to become more

independent around the house. Whatever rehabilitation means to you, you can rest assured that we will work together with you to help you access the specialist care that you need at an early stage and throughout your claim. We aim to achieve not only the best damages for our clients but also the best possible results through the rehabilitation available. We take pride in our reputation as a caring practice. We understand the importance of obtaining the best benefits for you and your family particularly during your time of need. We are happy to offer free initial advice on your personal injury claim and what benefits and rehabilitation assistance we are able to provide. Please contact Chris Kallis Solicitors to arrange a meeting to discuss your claim without any obligation.

5 steps to your Dream Bikini Body Wobbly cottage cheese thighs, bloated belly, stretch marks, tummy rolls, saggy glutes... these are just a few things that cross every girls mind as we approach the dreaded bikini season. Personal Trainer Emma Corry reveals how to feel amazing in your bikini this summer!

T

his time of year is full of girls hitting the treadmills and steppers at their local gym in the desperate attempt to “tone up” before hitting the beach. The number one goal I hear from my clients during the summer season is to tighten up their core and thighs, so they look good on the beach. With demanding work, family and life schedules, I know for many women your lifestyle simply does not allow you to spend the time in the gym that you would like; but fear not ladies just follow my simple steps and you will have dimple free thighs and a tummy you will be proud to put in a two piece.

Step 1: Water Intake

Water is the most important tool in banishing the cottage peel look. The National Health bodies state we should be looking to aim for 6-8 glasses a day but if you want to banish those dimples girls then you need to be looking at 2.5 litres a day. Water helps to flush out toxins in the body and will also help strengthen the collagen in your skin, helping to reduce the lumpy look.

Step 2: Exercise Smarter 10 July 2014

Not Longer

Girls, you do not need to spend 2 hours a day on a treadmill to get your dream body! All too often I see ladies in the gym hitting the cardio machines like life their depended on it and getting crushed when after 4 weeks they look exactly the same. It’s all about training smarter and getting the job done more efficiently. Workouts do not need to be more than 45 minutes long (good news for all of you with a jam packed schedule). Gym bunnies, you need to step away from endless hours on the treadmill and start adding interval training to your programs. Row for 45 seconds at a steady pace and then for 15 seconds row like a bear is chasing you! Get on the bike and peddle at a steady pace for 30 seconds and then go all out for the next 30 seconds. Do both of

Call Oracle Magazine 01752 691007

these for just 10 minutes and you should finish looking like you’ve just got out the shower. Interval training will be your best friend in the fight against those wobbly thighs and tummy rolls.

Step 3: Resistance Work

We are a nation of lazy glutes...yes that’s right; thanks to modern day life making sure we spend most of our days sat on our derrières, our glutes have become lazy. Do this simple butt blasting circuit 4 times a week and you’ll have a peachy bottom in no time! 1) Step ups - Step up onto chair/bench squeezing your glute muscles as you step up. Repeat this for 12-15 reps on each leg. Remember to focus on pushing with your heel. 2) Slam Balls - Standing slams - lifting up the slam ball above your

www.oracle.uk.net

info@oracle.uk.net

head, slam it down on the floor as hard as possible, keeping abs tight as you slam it down, squat down and remembering to focus on pushing up though your heels. Repeat for 30 seconds. 3) Curtsy Lunges - Start standing with your feet hip width apart, and then, keeping your weight in your left foot, take a big step back with your right leg, crossing it behind your left leg (as if about to do a ‘curtsy’). Slowly bend your knees and lower your body straight down until your front thigh is parallel to the floor, and both knees are bent at 90 degrees. Be sure to keep your abs drawn in and your back straight. Do 15 reps on one side, and then 15 reps on the other. 4) Bridges - Lie flat on the floor on your back with the hands by your side

and your knees bent. Your feet should be placed around shoulder width. This will be your starting position. Pushing mainly with your heels, lift your hips off the floor while keeping your back straight. Breathe out as you perform this part of the motion and hold at the top for a second. Slowly go back to the starting position as you breathe in. Repeat this circuit 5 times. If you need to make the exercises more challenging add weights in the form of dumbbells, tins or bottles of water.

Step 4: Diet

The number one cause for that lovely tummy bloat that we ladies suffer with is down to what we eat. Make sure your diet is clean and full of fresh fruits and vegetables, and try to include a different colour vegetable with every meal. Don’t forget to include plenty of good protein sources and healthy fats. A good guide to follow would be: Breakfast - Greek Yogurt with Fresh berries and seeds, add honey to sweeten. Mid-Morning Snack - Rough Oat cakes and hummus. Lunch - Chicken, Fish or Tofu with sweet potato and beetroot salad, sprinkled with toasted pumpkin seeds, Afternoon Snack - Apple and peanut butter. Dinner - Stir Fry Vegetables with either Chicken or Tofu with a tablespoon

Please mention Oracle Magazine when responding to adverts

of blackbean sauce. Evening snack - Greek yogurt with cinnamon. Watch your portion sizes and don’t be afraid of adding natural fats in your diet. Hummus, peanut butter, avocados and seeds are great for your skin and helping to banish that orange peel.

Step 5: Avoid Alcohol

Step away from the drinks girls, it’s time to banish the glass of wine in the evening. Studies show that the toxins in alcohol can contribute to the build up of cellulite and can also lead to belly bloat (not the look we’re after when sporting a two-piece on the beach). So if you want dimple free thighs this summer and a flatter tummy, swap the evening glass of sparkling wine for some fizzy flavoured water.

Stay safe at the beach Splashing, wading and paddling at the beach can be a real treat on a hot day. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution shares precautions to help your family stay safe.

S

wimming is a top activity with all ages and can be lots of fun, especially if the sun’s shining. But drowning is a real danger and even people who know how to swim can get into difficulties if they fail to take safety precautions.

14 July 2014

The British coast is spectacularly beautiful, rich in wildlife and hugely popular, attracting people from considerable distances to enjoy a range of recreational activities. But the seaside isn’t most people’s usual environment so it’s easy to miss some of the hazards, warns the RNLI. Rip currents and offshore winds can drag you out of your depth while jellyfish, sea anemones and weever fish can leave you with a seaside souvenir you didn’t bargain on. Peter Dawes, RNLI Head of Lifeguards, says: “We want people to have a safe and enjoyable time at the beach. The RNLI’s advice is to choose a

lifeguarded beach if possible, and swim between the red and yellow flags. “We also advise people not to use inflatables in strong winds or rough seas - and never when the orange windsock is flying, as this indicates an offshore wind that could carry you out to sea. “If you get into trouble, stick your hand in the air and shout for help - and if you see someone else in trouble, tell a lifeguard. If you can’t see a lifeguard, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.” The charity, which is funded entirely by donations and run by volunteers, is hugely busy in holiday periods so is asking people to take precautions to cut unnecessary risks.

“We want people to have a safe and enjoyable time at the beach. The RNLI’s advice is to choose a lifeguarded beach if possible, and swim between the red and yellow flags.”

RNLI top tips to stay safe on the beach • Wherever possible, always swim at a lifeguarded beach. Go to www.goodbeachguide.co.uk to search for listings. • Always read and obey the safety signs to help you avoid potential hazards on the beach and identify the safest swimming areas. • When on a lifeguarded beach, find the red and yellow flags and always swim or bodyboard between them - this area is patrolled by lifeguards. • If you get into trouble stick your hand in the air and shout for help. If you see someone in difficulty, tell a lifeguard, or, if you can’t see a lifeguard, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. • If you can’t make it to a lifeguarded beach, find out about your chosen beach at www.goodbeachguide.co.uk Check weather and tides before you go. • Don’t use inflatables in strong winds or rough seas - and never when the orange windsock is flying, as this signals an offshore wind which could carry you out to sea.

Chop the tuna into small chunks, then carry on chopping until the tuna is roughly minced. Tip the tuna into a bowl and mix with the garlic, ginger, soy sauce and coriander. Shape into two burgers, place on a plate, then freeze for 10mins to firm up.

2.

Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan, then cook the burgers for 1-2mins on each side or until done to your liking. Serve the burgers in toasted buns with lettuce, tomato and avocado. Recipe from bbcgoodfood.com

Your guide to Plymouth’s hidden treasure Businesses located in and around Plymouth’s historic Barbican area have joined forces to create a new map and guide for visitors, showcasing many hidden gems.

M

embers of the Association of Barbican Businesses (ABB) have produced this guide – Plymouth’s Historic Barbican – for visitors and locals who want to discover the history surrounding the harbour. Featuring the iconic Barbican ‘prawn’, the guide gives a brief description of what people can expect on a ‘day out on the historic Barbican’. It also provides details on how to get to the Barbican, whether coming from Plymouth’s city centre, Mount Batten or the Royal William Yard. Illustrated by local artist and historian

Chris Robinson, the guide highlights all of the association’s businesses, including places to eat, information services, art galleries, gift shops and local attractions such as the National Marine Aquarium. With many cobbled alleys the guide helps highlight the many businesses that can be found off the beaten track, as well as amongst the listed buildings and old warehouses. Ben Shearn, ABB member, managing director of The Treasury group, trustee of Jeremiahs Journey Charity and Board Member of the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership said: “The ABB have produced this map and guide to assist visitors in exploring the many unique and wonderful businesses the Barbican offers. We hope the map will guide people through both the main streets and the more hidden alleys to give a little history of the area and to increase the visitors dwell time and experience of Plymouths most historic area.” The Plymouth Waterfront Partnership

has helped to marketing the map as part of services offered to businesses in the BID agreement. The map and guide will be available at the Tourist Information Centre, through local businesses and can be downloaded by visiting www. barbicanwaterfront.com. Sarah O’Leary, Plymouth Waterfront Partnership BID manager said: “It is fantastic to see the businesses in the BID area working collaboratively to showcase what the Barbican has to offer. Many of these businesses are small, independent traders and their shops really are a hidden treasure worth finding.”

LEISURE

Fire up your BBQ & beat the Big C In gardens all over the UK this summer men will congregate around the grill, marvelling over their sausages and steaks. So this year, host your own BiG BBQ and raise awareness of male cancer.

M

en seem to love nothing better than comparing tips about the best barbequing techniques and boasting about their culinary skills. What they don’t love, however, is talking about their health - despite the fact that 37,400 are diagnosed with a male specific cancer every year. So this summer Orchid, the male cancer charity, and celebrity chefs, the Fabulous Baker Brothers Tom and Henry Herbert are calling on men across the country to stoke up their grills and get their bangers out to host their own Big BBQ and raise awareness of male cancer. The initiative aims to get men fired up about their health and get together with family, friends and colleagues to be the BBQ King and raise much needed funds for Orchid, as well as awareness of testicular, prostate and penile cancers, highlighting signs and symptoms and encouraging self checks. More than 2,000 men are diagnosed with testicular cancer every year, and rates are increasing.

It is the most common cancer in men aged 15-35 years and is twice as common today as it was 20 years ago. Signs and symptoms include a mass in the testicle, a change in the size or texture of the testicle and a heaviness in the scrotum. Risk factors include undescended testicle, family history of the disease, mumps or repeated testicle trauma. Treatments include surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy and most patients will be treated within a fortnight of diagnosis. Prostate cancer is one of the four most common cancers in the UK and over 35,000 men are diagnosed every year. It is the second most common cause of fatal cancer in men with 10,000 deaths every year in the UK alone. The majority of cases occur in men over the age of 60 although men in their 40s can be affected. Risk factors include age, a family history of prostate cancer and ethnicity. (Afro-Caribbean men have high incidents of prostate cancer). A diet rich in fat, red meat and dairy products may increase the risk of it developing. Signs and symptoms may include problems passing urine, needing to urinate more frequently or urgently, problems getting or maintaining an erection or pain during ejaculation, unexplained urinary infection, blood in the urine or a pain in the groin, back or hips. Dependent upon the aggressiveness of the cancer and how far it has progressed, treatments can include active

surveillance, surgery, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy. Thankfully cancer of the penis is very rare in Europe and there are only around 360 cases a year in the UK. It is most often diagnosed in men over 60 and while the exact cause is not known, it is thought to be related to general hygiene, and it is much less common in men who have been circumcised. However being informed and aware of male cancers, knowing the warning signs and symptoms, making regular monthly self checks, and getting early treatment does make a real difference to the outcome so it’s essential that men start putting their health on the menu. To organise a BiG BBQ simply visit www.the-big-bbq.co.uk to download a comprehensive information pack, which includes posters, celebrity chefs barbecue recipes, games and top tips on everything you need to make your BiG BBQ a massive success.

Award-winning Plymouth Independent Hotel Unveils £400k Expansion Following a £400,000, sevenmonth refurbishment 12 new bedrooms at The Grosvenor Plymouth are ready for guests. The award-winning hotel on Elliot Street has expanded into the adjoining property to increase its size from 29 to 41 bedrooms, a new breakfast / function room and new lounge. Owner, Paul Bennett believes that these are the first new independent hotel bed spaces in Plymouth for a number of years.

Paul Bennett, owner of The Grosvenor Plymouth

P

aul Bennett, owner of The Grosvenor Plymouth said “I am watching Plymouth develop before my eyes, but as is common knowledge there just isn’t enough quality bed spaces in the City. As we’ve seen with so many recent closures of small, medium and large accommodation providers, it’s a tough business to be in. With so many review sites now controlling the industry, customers expect more than ever and I believe that without the reinvestment it can become a slippery slope very quickly. I realise that sometimes this isn’t for the want of trying because if the guests don’t come, then there is nothing to put back in. I know that this continual reinvestment is what is required to keep our occupancy high - obviously along with the immaculate levels of customer service, cleanliness and a nice hearty freshly cooked breakfast of course!” Paul is delighted with the work and is glad that it’s been finished in time for Plymouth’s busy summer season. The hotel is ideally located just 50 yards from the Hoe and a close walk from the town centre, Theatre Royal and Pavilions so becomes extremely popular for a wide spectrum of clientele. Paul said “Our pricing structure is slightly unusual in that we have the same tariff all year round. We don’t put prices up and we don’t put them down. That way every guest under our roof has paid the same and that sits well with me. It also allows guests to know whether we are an affordable option for them without having to trawl the net for hours to find the best price.”

Opening of The Grosvenor Plymouth expansion

Paul added “We have regular workers from labourers to barristers, provide accommodation for local footballers to artists performing at Pavilions and have even had Heston Blumenthal stay over and try our locally sourced breakfast now not many people can say they’ve cooked for Heston!” The hard work of the last few months is already paying off with the hotel seeing record levels of occupancy and with the sun forecast throughout this summer, the future looks bright for Paul and his staff at The Grosvenor Plymouth. Experienced Plumbing and Heating Specialist you can trust When looking for a plumber, it’s important that you find one that’s reliable, honest, approachable, friendly and most importantly 100% competent with many years of experience in the trade. Well, look no further!

R

oss Elwell, owner of Heat Tech Innovations, is fully qualified in all areas of plumbing and heating, with over 10 years experience. Ross set up his own Cornwall based business in 2006 after achieving the award of Advanced Plumber of the Year. Since then, he has worked across Devon and Cornwall and his skills have most recently taken him to New Zealand to work with domestic and commercial heating systems. Ross said “There has never been a boiler breakdown or faulty system that I haven’t been able to solve” Since his return to the UK, Ross has settled in Plymouth and offers a full range of services, from fixing leaky taps to the full design and installation of plumbing and heating systems, covering all areas of Devon and Cornwall. This includes expertise in renewable energies, solid fuel, natural gas, LPG and pressurised/open vented hot water systems. “Working in New Zealand provided so many opportunities to work with sophisticated and high tech systems, enabling me to bring back this knowledge

and experience to further assist my customers in the UK.” said Ross. The design service provided by Heat Tech Innovations is second to none and, with the customer’s input, they are able to create outstanding designs in keeping with individual personal requirements. Ross said “From installing a new combi boiler to designing a new bathroom, I cater for all budgets and always ensure I meet every one of my customer’s needs with total dedication and professionalism.” “I pride myself on maintaining a high standard of workmanship and materials. With larger companies, I’ve found that customers are not always allowed the time to explain exactly what they wish to achieve when requesting assistance in modifying their home, resulting in an impersonal experience with a number of different tradesmen. However, with Heat Tech Innovations, you can feel confident that you will always be greeted by the familiar face of a trustworthy engineer.”

The Great South West Walks 2014 Opens For Bookings With 100 stunning coastal walks to choose from, the Great South West Walks 2014 is now open for bookings. These specially selected circular walks by the South West Coast Path Association, will take place across Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset from 20th – 28th September.

W

alkers can look forward to taking part in easy and family friendly strolls as well as challenging and rough terrain treks; many of the walks have themes such as history and wildlife, mining heritage, foraging, Jurassic geology and even a barefoot hike - each guided by an expert walk leader. The event will raise vital funds for the South West Coast Path Association and Children’s Hospice South West, through these sponsored walks, which will go towards the improvement of the South West Coast Path and supporting children with life limiting illnesses. Ken Carter chairman of the Great South West Walks project team, is delighted to be able to announce the walks saying: “This year’s event is gearing up to be fantastic, with a real variety of themes and types of walks in place. These celebrate the South West’s strong heritage and history, which walkers will be able to experience alongside helping to support the Coast Path and CHSW.” One of the walks chosen for Cornwall is a circular walk at Perranuthnoe, near Helston. This walk will be led by National Trust Barefoot Ranger Julie Hanson, with

hedgerow and wild food foraging along the way. Julie will be leading this walk barefoot and encourages anyone who is interested in partaking to join her in the sensory phenomenon that is barefoot hiking – by walking barefoot you can experience the Coast Path like never before. Walkers can try the barefoot experience for the entire route or, for the more tentative, short stretches if slip on shoes are worn. Julie will also be explaining which wild foods and hedgerow findings can be eaten along the route through foraging techniques. Julie Hanson, National Trust Barefoot Ranger, is delighted to be able to lead a walk as part of the event saying: “I am really looking forward to leading the Barefoot Hike as part of the Great South West Walks as I feel it is a truly unique way of experiencing the Coast Path. There are many benefits to walking barefoot alongside foot health – plus there is no way of getting closer to nature and being more a part of the environment than feeling the path between your toes. I hope lots of participants join me!” This walk is one of the Great South West Walks’ easy routes at 2.3 miles and

is recommended as child friendly. For Dorset, one of the walks is a Historical Tour at Church Ope Cove in Portland, led by walk leader Andy Straw. This walk will showcase the scene of possibly the first Viking raids of our country at Church Ope Cove, as well as visiting ruins of the pre-Norman St Andrews Church. It will take in the East Wears, where Sir Christopher Wren selected the very stone he used for the re-building of St Pauls Cathedral in London and see the point at which the stone was loaded on to barges. Andy Straw, (Volunteer Coast Ranger and SWCPA Representative) for the Isle of Portland, is delighted to be able to lead a walk as part of the event saying: “This stretch of the South West Coast Path is steeped in history and has a rugged beauty. The walk certainly has an eerie atmosphere as giant eyes watch you as you walk! I am excited to lead this walk as part of the Great South West Walks as I hope to be able to take the participants on a journey through time to explore the exciting moments of the past that this area experienced.” At 2.6 miles this walk is one of the Great South West Walks’ Moderate

This walk will start at Yenworthy on Exmoor and is 7.4 miles - more challenging for the experienced walker. The walk will follow a route through the stunning landscape which inspired 18th century poets William Wordsworth, Robert Southey and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who together founded the Romantic Movement in England. Walkers will follow Coleridge’s footsteps along the South West Coast Path where he was known to have often walked and, just off this route, penned his famous dream poem Kubla Khan. Alistair and Gill Campbell, authors of the Porlock Walks book and conservation volunteers, are delighted to be able to lead this walk, saying: “This is a stunning area of the South West which is clearly inspiring for many creative people. We are looking forward to sharing this section of the Coast Path with all those who enjoys the romantic views and environment of this area as part of the Great South West Walks. Who knows, we might even be inspired to write some poetry ourselves!” One of the walks chosen for Devon is a Jurassic Coast Geology walk at Beer in

This moderate walk of 5.3 miles will showcase a stretch of the breathtaking Jurassic Coast with walk leader Mike Green explaining some of the points of interest at this World Heritage Site. The Jurassic Coast’s entire length can be walked on the South West Coast Path and has been named as one of the wonders of the South West. Mike Green, Jurassic Coast Ambassador, is delighted to be able to lead a walk as part of the event saying: “The Jurassic Coast is a fantastic part of the South West’s heritage and I am honoured to be able to share some of its wonders as part of the Great South West Walks. Many people admire the coast without understanding how it was formed and its story, so it is fantastic that they will have the opportunity to learn about its history alongside supporting the Coast Path and CHSW.” For anyone who just can’t wait until September, they can get an early chance to take part in this and four other Great South West Walks with BBC Radio Devon as part of their Walk Devon series - contact the South West Coast Path Association at info@swcp.org.uk for more details.
