espite the research, more than a quarter of adults in the UK think getting cancer is all down to fate, according to a survey of more than 4,000 people conducted by Cancer Research UK. The survey asked a cross-section of the population whether they thought they could do anything to reduce their risk of cancer or whether getting the disease was just fate. Overall, 27 per cent of those asked said it was fate. Among those from the most deprived areas this figure rose to 43 per cent compared with 14 per cent in the most privileged areas. Surprisingly, more women than men believe cancer is due to fate and people over 65 were the most likely to put the disease down to destiny. Dr Lesley Walker, director of cancer information at Cancer Research UK, said, “It is alarming that such a large percentage of the British population don’t realise that half of all cases of cancer can be prevented by lifestyle changes. “We can all reduce our risk of cancer by stopping smoking, keeping a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables and taking plenty of exercise. Dr Walker adds, “We can give people information about how to do this, but it is seriously worrying that so many people think cancer is down to fate.” The survey also found that smokers were 50 per cent more likely than nonsmokers to believe getting cancer was fate, despite endless health campaigns about the high risk of lung cancer from smoking.

Personal Injury Damages Ban on Referral Fees

T

he Government’s ban on referral fees in personal injury cases came into force in April 2013 as part of the Legal Aid Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 (LASPO). Since the introduction of the ban there has been a significant reduction in the number of claims handling companies and other such bodies being involved in the process and promotion of personal injury damages. It is now a breach of regulations under LASPO for an individual or company to seek a referral fee or for a solicitor to undertake personal injury work upon such basis. The idea behind the ban is to ensure that personal injury work is only carried out by suitably qualified professionals who have the independence and resources to provide a proper service to the individual client. Referral fee arrangements can result in a position where a solicitor is in a position of conflict between the referrer and the particular client. We believe that a better service is provided by a local solicitor who sees the individual client in the same way as a GP would be

expected to see a patient. Solicitors are under a duty to act in the best interest of each client and provide a proper standard of service. They should act with integrity and not allow their independence to be compromised. It is certainly likely to the case that where an individual client sees a solicitor in person, they will be able to provide first hand advice and explain fully what evidence is necessary in order to properly formulate the claim. In the past, it has often been an obstacle to the collection of evidence when instructing someone through a claims handling company where the person dealing with the matter might not be accessible in person. If the referral fee ban results in more clients seeing a local solicitor and thereby obtaining a better and independent service this must be in everyone’s best interest. Referral fees often resulted in behind the scenes agreements between parties acting for an individual. These parties could influence or restrict the freedom of the legal advisor to instruct a particular expert or barrister and such arrangements could sometimes have an

adverse effect. It is important when choosing a solicitor that you are able to speak to him or her, that you have confidence in the person dealing with the claim and you are assured that there is no third party who has any influence or interest in the instruction. Individuals have a right to choose their legal representative and this cannot be restricted by their legal expense insurer. Bringing a claim requires careful consideration of various factors and it is essential that you receive impartial and professional advice in order to ensure the best outcome. We are happy to offer free initial advice to you on whether there is a compensation claim. Please contact Chris Kallis to arrange a meeting to discuss your claim without any obligation.

Start a Long Term Relationship with Radio Plymouth

A

s I was sitting in the studio at Radio Plymouth between 6 and 10 this morning presenting “Bob McCreadie For Breakfast”, I suddenly realised that I have now been with the station for four months. Along with my amazement at having got away with it for that long, came the realisation that it really is true that time flies when you are having fun! I count myself very lucky to have joined this brilliant team and to be able to play my part in bringing true local radio to the city and South East Cornwall. Radio Plymouth is the only radio station which broadcasts solely to this area and unlike some stations our programmes come from studios right here in the city. From my first day with the station I realised that this means

that there is a unique relationship between us and our audience. All the listeners who call in to the show seem more like friends and made me feel really welcome from the outset. Joining the station has also given

“Radio Plymouth is the only radio station which broadcasts solely to this area and unlike some stations our programmes come from studios right here in the city” me the chance to renew my frienship with Tim Manns, our Drive Time Presenter and Station Manager. I first

worked with him at Radio Bahrain in the Middle East when we were both in our twenties (not that long ago, obviously)! One thing we both learned in that land of sand and camels is that radio should be fun, and that listeners enjoy having a radio station that really feels like it belongs to them. We have both taken that ethos with us wherever we have worked and never has it been more true than here at Radio Plymouth. If you haven’t joined in our giant radio group hug yet, then you are defintely missing out! Tune in to 106.7 FM or listen on line via www. radioplymouth.com and start a long term radio relationship with us. I promise to respect you in the morning! Bob McCreadie for Breakfast is on air from 6am to 10am every weekday.

It’s full steam ahead for model train market Many people have an enduring love of locomotives, either from the golden age of steam or the more modern engines.

O

ne way of reflecting this passion in your home is through model trains – either by putting them on display, or through a working train set in a bedroom, spare room or ‘den’. Whether it is 00 gauge, 0 gauge or larger models, the market for trains has never been more buoyant. Last month, a collection of trains, carriages, rolling stock and accessories lovingly put together by a Plymouth man over many years made £10,000 at auction. Model trains, particularly older tinplate examples, can be a lucrative investment.

Clockwork items can also be valuable. But more modern electric train sets are also in demand, and some of these fascinating items can also be snapped up without breaking the bank. With more trains coming along the track, now is a good time to invest at Plymouth Auction Rooms. And with a host of local, national and international collectors registering to bid at each sale, there is huge interest for buyers and sellers. Highest prices are paid for locomotives, and if items are boxed that is even better. If you are thinking of selling model train items, why not pop along to one of our free valuation mornings at our Cattedown saleroom every Monday to Thursday, from 10am-1pm. The next collectors auction takes place on Wednesday May 7, starting at

Easter Baking This season is the perfect time of year to enjoy baking with the kids. There are so many great recipes that are easy enough for the little ones to get involved with. Take some inspiration from these great ideas! They would even make a great gift alternative to the traditional Easter Egg.

Easter Rocky Road Makes 8 - 10 YOU WILL NEED: • 200g good quality milk chocolate • 75g good quality dark chocolate • 25g unsalted butter • 50g mixed pink & white marshmallows, cut into small pieces • 50g shortbread biscuits, cut into small pieces • 100g macadamia nuts • 25g raisins

1 Line a 3cm-deep, 8 x 25cm bar pan with plastic wrap. Place the milk and dark chocolates with the butter in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water (don’t let the bowl touch the water), and stir until melted. 2 Stir marshmallows into chocolate with remaining ingredients. 3 Spread into pan, chill in fridge for 2 hours or until hard. Slice in the pan.

M & M Cookies Makes 24 YOU WILL NEED: • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened • 3/4 cup brown sugar • 1/4 cup granulated sugar • 1 egg • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 2 cups all purpose flour • 2 teaspoons cornstarch • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 2 cups M&Ms or chocolate chips

1 Preheat oven to 350 F. 2 Cream together butter and sugars until smooth. Add egg and vanilla and blend in. 3 Stir in flour, cornstarch, baking soda and salt. Stir in M&Ms. 4 Drop by tablespoons onto a lightly greased baking sheet and bake for 9-11 minutes, until golden brown around the edges.

These recipes make perfect Easter gifts that are guaranteed to make anyone smile! Just wrap in tissue paper or store in a glass jar. They will keep for about 5 days.

Zuzimo ‘One of Plymouth’s Hidden Gems’

H

idden gem” is one of those cliché descriptions that sometimes does fit the bill.

The Zuzimo! Restaurant and Tapas Bar is one of those cases. Tucked away on a corner of Plymouth’s Vauxhall Street it is not quite on the Barbican and not quite in the City Centre but it’s definitely worth finding your way there.

We were looking for a substantial snack rather than a meal when we came across this particular hidden gem. The Tapas menu was extensive and included some vegan options but we were tempted by the lunch menu offering a two course lunch for only £7.95 and an extra course for an extra pound, so the Tapas had to wait for another day. My wife Anne opted for the fish and chips, intrigued by the polenta batter while I went for a chicken penne. The fish was fresh and not overcooked, obviously prepared to order and the batter was something else; the lightest, crispest batter I’ve tasted in a long time. The chips were top notch too, none of your nasty, soggy chips as Philip Madoc said to Capt Mainwaring.

Zuzi & Mo restaurant owners

and not kept warm somewhere and the sauce was the kind that makes you ask for a bit of bread so as not to waste a drop of it.

Zuzi and Mo are a wife and husband team who took over the restaurant a few months ago and completely refurbished it.

We finished off with a highly indulgent honey cheese cake, feeling a bit guilty as we’d only intended to get a snack.

Mo is one of those Mediterranean hosts who likes to make his customers feel like guests. We ended up with a tour backstage. The cooking area is one of the cleanest I’ve seen. I didn’t try them but Anne says the toilets are clean enough to eat in. The whole restaurant is light, bright and airy. The tables are well spaced so you you don’t feel crowded.

All of the ingredients are fresh and locally sourced where possible. Somerset is the longest journey for those of you interested in food miles. The house wine was light and fruity, just the right thing for a sunny but slightly chilly spring day.

The same goes for the penne. The pasta was nicely done, again fresh Please mention Oracle Magazine when responding to adverts

Our quick snack took up a couple of hours and ended with a real barista coffee prepared by Mo. Definitely a place to go back to and certainly worth the search if you don’t know the area.

Franchise Director Myles Lockwood said “I first noticed the business was doing well after the first year, so by year 2 I realised the model could be packaged into a franchise and rolled out across the UK to any city, town or village” Myles went onto say“ the great thing about Business Card Xpress is its totally measurable to all businesses that add an exclusive offer to the reverse of their

Building A Child’s Future...

• Quality Care & Stimulation in a Happy, Safe & Relaxed Environment • Family Owned nurseries

I have to admit at times this book was a little confusing, but it was also totally gripping and I found it hard to put down. It is the story of three generations told by the granddaughter Jung Cheng. I realise now how little I knew of China, the Cultural Revolution and it has now spurred me on to read more about Chinese history. It is very harrowing and one can only say that what they went through was just dreadful. The epilogue explains how Jung Cheng’s mother visits her after Mao’s death, telling Jung of various anecdotes and details of the story preceding her birth. I would recommend anyone who has not read this to do so, as I am sure you will be just as enthralled as I was. A beautifully moving book, despite the horrendous ordeals they went through. A life and culture so different to ours and just so interesting.

The Little Coffee Shop Of Kabul by Deborah Rodriguez I love reading about women’s lives in different countries and with Afghanistan often in the news, I find it particularly interesting to read of their women. I know this book has had mixed reviews but I really enjoyed it, although I would not want to go on and read her latest book ‘The Kabul Beauty Shop’. This story centres around the lives of five women visiting the coffee shop and besides the women, it also has several interesting male characters. The story follows Sunny, Isabel, Halajan, Yasmina and Candale and although originally all from different backgrounds, their lives become entwined and a bond is created between them. It is full of colourful descriptions, particularly their food and dress. A good holiday read. The Last Runaway Tracey Chevalier The Last Runaway tells the story of an English Quaker girl, Honor Bright, going to live in Ohio, America in the 1850’s. It is a time of great upheaval in America as the country inches towards civil war with a variety of runaways both black slaves and white settlers trying to forge a better life for themselves. Honor becomes involved in the runaway black slaves trying to help them where she can, which leads to great difficulties in her life. Throughout the book you read Honor’s letters sent home to her family and best friend, and I found these wonderfully written in such lovely language. I have always enjoyed Tracey Chevalier and this comes up to her normal standard, it is a delightful read.
