Value your health? Well, you’re in luck! Contrary to what your doctor may tell you, when it comes to your health the first person you should consult is yourself.
F
orget the assumption that your medical doctor is the be all and end all when it comes to your health, fitness and wellbeing. On second thought, for the minute, let us presume your doctor is the best person to help you. Imagine the scenario: You are struggling with a niggling injury, maybe back pain, a problem with your knee, or even headaches. You go to your doctor, have your seven minute appointment and go on your way with an ample supply of painkillers or anti-inflammatories to get you through. Problem solved, right? Wrong. The drugs help with the symptoms for a few hours but you are still left with the problem. This is the situation Ryan Buckle found himself in. Back in 2005, Ryan was involved in a motorbike accident which left him with a broken leg and an on-going case of whiplash. He spent many months trying to locate a therapist who could help him on his road to recovery, often getting referred to the wrong people. Ryan’s experience highlighted the problem in the system: people looking for a health professional often don’t know where to find the professional they need. After eventually getting the right treatment, going on to become a personal trainer and studying towards a degree at the University St. Mark & St. John in Health, Exercise and Physical activity, Ryan created Capes Health Professionals; a website to efficiently match people with a professional to help them recover, get fit or improve their health and wellbeing. “After going through something like this I quickly realised that finding someone who could help me was something I knew nothing about. I had all sorts of questions.
Who do I need to see? Who can help me? Where do I find a professional? It took me a long time to find someone who had dealt with my problem previously and I was comfortable to work with. Through my experiences and working with people to improve their health I am continually asked where to find a health professional
“Capes provides an online service that connects people to professional, qualified health professionals, saving time, getting results and avoiding disappointment” or who they should see. So I decided to do something about it and make health professionals easy to find for everyone.” Capes provides an online service that connects people to professional, qualified health professionals, saving time, getting

results and avoiding disappointment. People can compare health professionals at their leisure and see all the information they need to know including what they do, their skill set, their hobbies and interests, images and experience to be able to find the right health professional to help them. When they are ready, they can get in touch safe in the knowledge they have found the right health professional. There are Chiropractors, Acupuncturists, Physiotherapists, Exercise professionals and Sports therapists, which is where the name Capes came from. With many more health professionals included with massage therapists, hypnotherapists, counsellors, reflexologists and more. You can find the professional you require, for an injury or rehabilitation right through to a personal trainer to get in shape or a relaxing massage from a qualified massage therapist. Find the right health professional for you with Capes Health Professionals.

Call for NHS staff to say sorry when things go wrong The Health Secretary has called for doctors and nurses to be more open, honest and ‘say sorry’ to patients when there are failures in patient care.
J
eremy Hunt has confirmed new recommendations will be sent to every hospital in England and Wales to help win back trust in the NHS. To address the concerns the NHS Litigation Authority, the body which oversees claims made against the health service, has produced a leaflet for staff entitled “saying sorry”. It recommends that staff should make face-to-face apologies to patients ‘as soon as they are aware an incident has occurred’. It also advises that patients should then be given a written apology, adding that it is not like a car insurer, which can ‘withhold a claim because an apology or explanation has been given’. ‘Saying sorry is not an admission of legal liability’, the leaflet says. ‘It is the right thing to do.’ Indeed, in our experience it is often the only way to satisfy justifiable concern. The new guidance follows on from a
“staff should make face-to-face apologies to patients ‘as soon as they are aware an incident has occurred” series of highly published NHS scandals during 2013 which resulted in a Public Inquiry into the Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust where over 1,000 patients died. A further 11 Trusts were also put into special measures following concerns over their high mortality rates. In response to the Francis Inquiry into care failings at Stafford hospital, a ‘statutory duty of candour’ was introduced, meaning families must be informed if errors in treatment cause death or serious injury. The chief executive of the NHS Litigation Authority has stated that “saying sorry” is the human and moral thing to do and confirmed to the Trusts’ that they will not say ‘we’re not going to cover you because you’ve said sorry’. This combined with new guidelines about
whistleblowing, should now lead to more openness and willingness for doctors and nurses to come clean and report mistakes at a much earlier stage. In cases where people perhaps bring a claim out of frustration, because they do not feel that they have been given an explanation or that their complaints have been heard, an apology may make them less likely to pursue an action. Unfortunately, things do go wrong and the outcome of a medical investigation

The excellent value of Care Homes If we felt alone, frail or struggling to cope with day to day demands it would be an absolute blessing for someone we trusted to help us get ready for the day ahead.
T
o also have a housekeeper and someone to take care of our laundry as well as a chef to prepare us lovely cooked meals throughout the day - well what a dream! If that were not enough, imagine we also had another person to take care of most of our bills and general annoyances as well as a maintenance team right there, to fix things should they go wrong. And,
to ensure our day is as perfect as can be there is another person to manage all these people!
and maintenance, we start to appreciate just how much value a good quality care home offers.
It all sounds too good to be possible. People around me, should I need them, 24 hours a day. How much would this cost? Too much for most people to be able to consider employing all this assistance in their own home. A good quality care home offers all of this and much more, which makes them excellent value. Even a small home, offering places for around thirty people to live will have around fifteen staff to attend to your needs over twenty four hours a day. That is a lot of care and attention.
These days safeguarding people’s welfare and health and safety is paramount to both local authorities and the care home and NHS regulator – the Care Quality Commission. You can be sure that if you are considering moving into a care home, not only will you enjoy great value for money, you can be sure that there is plenty of interest in protecting you and promoting your wishes and choices as to how you choose to live your life in your new home (from home).
When we also take into consideration that a weekly fee of around £525 a week includes all of our other usual costs such as heating, electricity, water, council tax, buildings insurance and any cleaning

The King of the Jungle has arrived! Disney’s worldwide theatrical phenomenon The Lion King has arrived at the Theatre Royal for a seven week run until Saturday 15th March, as part of the show’s recordbreaking tour of the UK and Ireland.
D
isney’s The Lion King is based on the beloved Academy awardwinning animated film which was entrusted to Director and Co-Designer Julie Taymor to adapt the film for the stage. Taymor brought a vast array of disciplines to Disney’s The Lion King which draws upon her immeasurable experience of various theatrical styles and cultures to tell the compelling tale

of Simba. The story follows the young lion cub, as he journeys through life and struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and his destined role of King. Four years in the making, this truly international production brings together a cast of over 50 actors, singers and dancers, from 17 different countries, supported by a backstage team of over 100 people. The touring production is the biggest musical production ever to tour the UK. With hundreds of masks, puppets and more than 700 elaborate costumes representing 26 different types of animal, 21 giant trucks are used to transport everything across the country. In total, the touring production will visit 10 cities across the UK & Ireland over two and a half years, with further dates and locations to be announced. The acclaimed stage adaptation of Disney’s 1994 film was first seen on Broadway in 1997, where it recently

became the highest grossing show in Broadway history. The production has now been seen by over 68 million people across six continents and the acclaimed West End production continues to sell out at London’s Lyceum Theatre in its 15th triumphant year. In addition to the record-breaking productions in London and New York, Disney’s The Lion King can currently be seen in Tokyo, Hamburg, Madrid, Sao Paulo, Brazil and on tour in the US, UK and Japan. The production opened in Sydney, Australia in December 2013. To date, this new touring production has enjoyed sell-out, record-breaking seasons in Bristol, Manchester, Dublin and Birmingham and is in its last few weeks at Edinburgh before opening in the south west. Both audiences and critics have embraced Disney’s The Lion King, giving it rave reviews and standing ovations.

The Nanny State... We hope that you had a fantastic Christmas and New Year and are looking forward to a happy, healthy and prosperous 2014. For most of us, and we hope for you, the holiday season is a joyful one, surrounded by friends and family - the people we love and trust and whom we know have our best interests at heart. People who will always be there for us if we need them.
H
owever, in an effort to protect the vulnerable, the law states that should you become mentally incapable of making your own decisions, then it is the job of the “system” to protect you against any, and all, persons who may wish to take advantage of your position. This includes your own family. Thus, if you were to fall and hit your
head (as happened to Jacqueline Barber), your family would have no legal right to decide on what care you should receive. Jacqueline died in care as her daughter battled in the courts for the right to take her mother home and look after her. If you were to be diagnosed with dementia and placed in a care home, your family would not be able to remove you, even if they felt you were being mistreated. Well they could, but they maybe met a few days later at the front door by policemen with a battering ram and a court order to forcibly return you to the care home - as happened to Betty Figg. The legal system is to be commended for their efforts to protect the vulnerable, but unfortunately it does not have the time or the resources to make accurate judgements on every case in a timely fashion. So, should you become incapacitated, either through ill health or through an accident, the law requires that your family lose all rights and a “deputy” may be appointed as a neutral third party to manage your affairs.
Your joint bank accounts, your property, and even decisions regarding the type of medical care you receive all become the remit of the court. For example a joint account is likely to be closed for all transactions other than for emergencies, until a deputy has been appointed. So while you may trust your friends and family to look after you, the law does not, and the only way to make sure your voice is heard is to have a Lasting Power of Attorney drawn up by a professional. We hope that this isn’t too depressing a start to the New Year, but we believe that it is too important to wait - we hope you do too. recent survey by the Oxford Internet Institute reveals that over a third of us have tried online dating, with users in their 40s and above being the most likely to have signed up to a dating website. For women in particular, the attraction of online dating often revolve around security issues and intentional dating rather than leaving things to chance. Whereas younger people are more likely to take a more relaxed attitude and older people are far more focused on finding a partner by actively going out and looking, rather than passively waiting for a potential mate to appear in their life. The rise of online dating in the UK appears a trend which is likely to continue over the next few years, as more and more people meet their partners through this medium and the amount of success stories continue to rise. Dating website Love is Dating is one of the more recent websites being launched, with the aim of bringing together more UK couples.

In another 10 years’ time we might all be asking not ‘How did you meet?’ but ‘What site did you meet on?’ We believe the right relationship makes you happy. And everyone needs a little happiness in their lives.”
One thing to remember is not to tell them your life story! At this stage it’s advisable not to mention your ex - it’s a sure sign that you’re still focused on a past relationship. No matter how comfortable you feel talking to someone, it’s important to remember not to give away too much information too early. Use the first email as a chance to spark their curiosity. Keep it clean, polite and to the point - and throw in a little humour if possible.
But there’s no point in joining an online dating site if you aren’t proactive. So don’t waste time putting together the perfect profile and then just sit and wait for emails to come flooding in.

Spokewoman Karen Barr says “Ten years ago, if you told someone that you met your partner online, you would often be the recipient of a shocked look or some rather prurient questions.
If you want to get back in the dating game, make time to email the people who interest you. However, don’t worry if they don’t reply - as there are always plenty more fish in the virtual sea!
As the internet has become so much more a part of people’s lives, internet dating

Online dating is a much safer way to meet people, with a much higher success rate than in bars. Having a guaranteed variety of choices is a great change from the old days of dating when it used to be difficult just to meet new people in general, let alone potential partners. With the modern age of dating you are able to compare your interests at the click of a button, and having this knowledge lets you know from the start what you’re getting into. With one in four relationships now starting online, there are a significant number of happy marriages which started at the click of a mouse. If you are single and looking for a companion, maybe the month of love is the perfect time to try it for yourself! What have you got to lose?

Countryside Charm Where a property is located can have a significant bearing on its value. A good location adds an average of £10,000 on a home’s value, but research shows many buyers would be prepared to pay up to £25,000 more to get a place in the perfect location.
W
hile proximity to good schools, work and transportation links are crucial deciding factors, being within easy reach of the countryside is now the most prized attribute for a home. A survey by Halifax Estate Agents has revealed that almost one in three buyers would pay up to £10,000 more for a property in a desirable location and a further 12 per cent would be prepared to up their offer by between £10,000 and £25,000.
When it comes to local geography, by far the biggest draw for prospective property owners is country air, with close proximity to the countryside considered the most important feature by 26 per cent of respondents. Having good transport links nearby was the top priority for 18 per cent of those surveyed. This was closely followed by proximity to work and being located near to a good school, with 14 per cent choosing each of these options as their primary consideration. Not surprisingly, the buyers’ ages play a significant role in the location stakes. Proximity to a good school is the most prized location factor for both the 25-34 and 35-44 age groups, while for the 18-24 group good transportation links come out on top. Colin Kemp, managing director
for Halifax Estate Agents, says, “It is interesting that being able to escape to the country is the most highly prized geographical factor for house hunters. According to our research, it ranks higher than some of the considerations that are traditionally thought to impact significantly on property prices, such as local schools and distance to work.” Although other factors such as budget, specification and availability play an important part in the decision to purchase a property, most people begin their search for a home by looking at geographic location first. “The fact that so many house hunters would be prepared to pay more for a property in their ideal location demonstrates just how important this is in the home-buying process.”
