How to make this summer the best yet Y
ou’ve read the headline. You’re intrigued. But,” you might be thinking, “Summer is all about a great holiday in Europe”. It’s fair to say, a holiday at your favorite resort with nothing to think about except the perfect beverage and regularly applying sun lotion is total bliss. But you’re missing something essential. The rest of the summer, the weeks before and after your holiday, the sunny weekends and the kids holidays are where your summer makes the leap from good to great. A great summer should be more than just a holiday: it should be lifestyle.
Nature doesn’t cost a thing We live in a part of the country where people come to relax, to get away from it all, yet we sometimes forget to relax ourselves. What is better than spending some time in the great outdoors? Not much, except maybe that holiday in Europe. For example, Dartmoor is full of Tors and towns, lakes and paths with picturesque views, ice cream vans and perfect trails for a bike ride, walk or adventure. There’s no better place than Dartmoor and Cornwall to relax, unwind and have a great time.
“Whatever helps you relax and feel great will only add to making your summer great.” Keep yourself healthy You have to take some time out for you. With the pressures of modern life, we often forget to take five minutes to step back, relax and enjoy the here and now. We’re all guilty of it, there’s always something that needs doing and things can get on top of us. But it’s summer! What better time of the year is there to do something for you? Unwind with a sports massage, visit a chiropractor and remove those aches
“The summer is the perfect time to get fitter, have fun and create lasting memories with friends and family.”
for anything
Do something new. Something outlandish, something that you wouldn’t normally do. A charity run, a half marathon, a triathlon? Make this summer one to remember. Why not take up running, cycling or an exercise class. Take the opportunities the sun brings when Devon comes to life. Use the great weather and the countryside, take the kids to the beach, take a ride up to a pub on the moors, or take a stroll to the top of a Tor. The summer is the perfect time to get fitter, have fun and create lasting memories with friends and family.
Having fun can be tiring. Capes Health Professionals have plenty of Health and Wellness Professionals to keep you raring to go over your summer. You could keep yourself in tip-top condition for the summer sun with an exercise and weight plan. Or maybe you need to simply relax with a pamper package of aromatherapy and massage. Get over the fear of flying, you know, so you can actually go to Europe! Or perhaps you would like to quit smoking, fix your bad back or recover from an injury. Capes Health Professionals have everything you need to get everything you want out of summer 2014. Capes Health Professionals now bring you plans and packages, a great feature that allows you to get more from Health Professional Services with predesigned plans and packages for fitness, lifestyle, health, relaxation, rehabilitation and more. Create your lifestyle with Capes Health Professionals: Trusted Health Professionals at your fingertips.

Saved Plymouth Salon celebrates 5th year of success When Crownhill village based Snips Salon was threatened with closure 5 years ago, two members of staff Julie Wotton, and Sarah Jury stepped up and saved the salon.
I
n 2009, the Co-op decided to sell non food stores and salons, one of which being Snips, which had been operating for over 30 years in Crownhill. Julie Wotton, then Salon Manager, and Senior Stylist Sarah Jury, made the bold move to buy the business and became a partnership. This not only safeguarded their own jobs, but those of the six employees that also worked there. The salon was redecorated and rebranded Halo, still maintaining a very high standard of professionalism to accommodate classic and modern styles, for ladies, gents and children. Julie Wotton said “We were devastated when we thought we would have to close. Thankfully that didn’t happen and here we are, still going strong after five years.” Five years on, the salon has gone from strength to strength, adding specially tailored packages for the bride and family, and also for proms and special occasions. Halo is a good, clean, family friendly salon, with clients ranging from 1 to 91! “We have such a good relationship with the staff and clients, we couldn’t

We are like a second family. Even our solicitor, when renewing our lease now after five years, couldn’t believe we still had the same, original staff! That must say something!” said Julie. Halo offer clients a free consultation, which the team feel is of the upmost importance before any service, so that clients are totally satisfied and are completely happy as they leave. Sarah Jury said “We value all of our clients, regular or new. We thank our clients for staying loyal and supporting us. We pride ourselves on making sure everyone feels welcome.”

Halo clients can enjoy the salons relaxed atmosphere, where they can be rest assured that the highly trained staff are passionate about achieving total client satisfaction. “Hairdressing is a brilliant job” said Sarah. “Every day is different and no head of hair is the same, which keeps our job exciting and fresh. It’s great to have a job where you enjoy going to work. I can’t imagine a job where I’d dread going in! It helps to have such a strong, loyal team of staff that all work well together.” After 5 years of success, the team at Halo are still committed to provide their expertise in creative and classic hairdressing in a friendly, caring environment. Halo benefits from a a free car park right opposite the salon, which is located at 44 Morshead Road in Crownhill. The salon is open from 8.30am - 5pm Monday to Saturday, with late night opening until 6.30pm on Thursdays. Tel: 01752 303155.

Is alcohol really making you fat? With hot summer days and lighter evenings upon us, the temptation for an iced cold beer, a frozen cocktail or chilled glass of something sparkling at the end of a long day is too great for most of us to resist. With studies showing that 75% of men and 80% of women are drinking above the daily limit, does a cheeky glass in the evening a few times a week really affect your health and is alcohol really making you fat? By Emma-Jane Corry
A
“
lcohol is metabolized by a normal liver at the rate of about one ounce (one shot, a normal beer, a regular sized glass of wine) every 90 minutes.” Age, sex and weight can all affect this process. Any amount consumed over that doesn’t get processed immediately, and instead saturates your blood until your liver can process the excess alcohol. The body stores protein, fats and carbohydrates, but it cannot store alcohol, so our systems will act to remove it immediately putting all other process on hold including the fat burning process. Alcohol and weight gain usually come hand in hand, with beer bellies and love handles being at the top of people’s weight loss wish lists. Alcohol has no real nutritional benefits, its high in calories
“So the ugly truth of the matter is, yes alcohol can lead to weight gain, bad skin, belly bloating, love handles and even that pesky orange peel” 10 May 2014
and when consumed it stimulates insulin production and a spike in insulin levels can lead to an increase in fat storage. A pint of beer contains around 180 calories, which is around the same as a large slice of pizza; just 2 gin and tonics can have the same calories as those found in a burger. According to the website drinkaware.co.uk, a man drinking five pints a week (the equivalent of 250 pints a year) consumes the same amount of calories as someone who gets through 221 doughnuts in a year. Just 2 pints a day, 4 days a week can lead to nearly 75,000 extra calories a year! One pound of fat is 3,500 calories meaning just 8 pints a week could lead to a 22lb weight gain in just 12 months! Alcohol has almost the same calorie content as that of pure
Call Oracle Magazine 01752 691007
fat, with seven calories per gram. Before those of us that save our naughty tipple till the weekends start shining our healthy halos, remember that just 3 ounces of alcohol can reduce your fat burning ability by a third meaning your Sunday morning workout will be a lot less effective if its completed after a night on the tiles. Ladies we all hate the dreaded orange peel otherwise known as cellulite and with beach weather now upon us and swimwear coming out from the back of the closet, it might be time to rethink the glass of wine in the evening. Studies show that the toxins in alcohol can contribute to the build up of cellulite and can also lead to belly bloat (not the look we’re after when sporting a

two-piece on the beach). So girls, if you want dimple free thighs this summer and a flatter tummy, swap the evening glass of sparkling wine for some fizzy flavoured water. So the ugly truth of the matter is, yes alcohol can lead to weight gain, bad skin, belly bloating, love handles and even that pesky orange peel. It’s time to think about your health and your waistline and start making smart choices. Make a conscious effort to only drink one night a week, swap your glass of wine with lunch to an apple juice or sparkling water, avoid turning to a drink after a bad day at work and go for a walk to clear your head instead. When you do have a drink, make smarter choices and swap your regular beer for light beer, your full fat mixers for soda water, and make your wine a spritzer. Just a few simple changes to your drinking habits could have huge benefits to both your health and fitness levels. So why not start making those smart changes now and make this summer your healthiest summer!

Bad posture caused by mobile device use could shorten your life Texting and using mobile devices for long periods of time could lead to lower life expectancy, according to the United Chiropractic Association.
F
orward-leaning posture increases the risk of an early death in elderly people and there are fears that younger people might be knocking time off their lives by using this posture when they text, go online, send emails or play games on phones and other mobile devices. The UCA, which has around 600 members across the UK, says that poor posture is as big a health risk as obesity and is highlighting the dangers as part of its Spinal Awareness Week on 12th -16th May. Studies suggest a link between forward-leaning posture in older people and hyperkyphosis, which is associated with pulmonary disease and cardiovascular problems. The UCA points out that elderly people with even a small degree of hyperkyphosis have a 1.44 times greater risk of mortality than those without. This is a similar figure to increased risk of death presented by a body mass index greater than 30. UCA executive member Estelle Zauner-Maughan, explained why using mobile devices could prove such a risk: “We tend to drop our heads forward which rounds the shoulders and this is what we term forward-leaning posture. “People are now definitely at an increased risk of having problems through the top of their neck and back because of their posture, which is causing a change in the curve of the back. And there is an increased risk that they will develop this
12 May 2014
earlier on in life because of the length of time they’ve been sitting at computers or using mobile devices.” Estelle added: “The problem is that when someone drops their head forward and rounds their shoulders, it becomes impossible for them to take a full breath in because of the restriction through the muscles and because the ribs can’t move properly. So the heart and lungs can’t function to their full effectiveness. Research is suggesting that the decrease in life expectancy comes from this.” UCA chiropractor Edwina Waddell has noticed forward-leaning posture becoming more of an issue at her practice in Putney: “It’s something I notice every day and use of mobile devices is a factor,” said Edwina. “So many of us have structured our lives in a way that means we use computers, mobile phones, tablets and laptops at work and in our leisure time as well. “Posture has been an overlooked factor in our health but research is helping us to raise awareness of it and people
Call Oracle Magazine 01752 691007
are now beginning to realise that good posture is more than about how it makes you look; it’s important for your health on a day to day basis and it can be important in terms of your life expectancy. “This isn’t alarmist or scaremongering; it’s what more and more research is telling us. And the good news is that it doesn’t have to happen because it’s something we all have a degree of control over. We can change our habits. For example, restrict the amount of time you spend on mobile devices. And bring them up to your eye level, so that you’re not looking down.” The UCA is urging people to have their posture checked by a registered chiropractor and to take steps to safeguard their posture and health: Edwina said: “A lot of people might not even realise anything is wrong with their posture. A check-up enables potential problems to be corrected before aches and pains begin and before risks are allowed to develop further.” www.unitedchiropractic.org

Stir well and then put the carrots into a roasting tray. Roast in the oven for 15-20 minutes. Meanwhile add a large handful of pumpkin seeds to a dry frying pan and toast over a high heat for 3-4 minutes, tossing them all the time to make sure they don't burn. Cut the halloumi into slices and grill them over a high heat until slightly crispy and squidgy. Once the carrots are roasted, remove them from the oven and allow to cool slightly. Mix the carrots with the lettuce leaves, finely sliced red onions, grilled halloumi, toasted pumpkin seeds and a sprinkling of golden linseeds. To make the dressing mix 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar with a dash of lemon juice and some olive oil. Dress the salad and then sprinkle with freshly chopped mint.

New Local Business proves to be a success Two young businessmen took a gamble and changed their career path and launched a gadget repair service. With business growing and plans for further expansion, it has proven to be a huge success.
R
obert Stephens, aged 29, and Joe Smith, aged 28, launched SOS i-Fix; a repair service which caters for a wide range of gadgets including Mobile Phones, Tablets, Laptops, Consoles and more. SOS i-FIX can be found on North Hill, opposite Plymouth University. The young entrepreneurs target the student market, which makes up half of their custom. In just the first few months of trading they had already repaired over 300 devices, with the most common service of replacing smashed screens. “Seventy-five per cent of people live
on their phones – it’s their life,” said Rob. “If their phone gets damaged it’s more important to get it fixed than, say, get their car fixed.” Rob and Joe have employed two technicians in their North Hill unit, which developed from their first business venture in Cattedown; SOS Quick Cash. This first opened in 2012 and offers services including short-term loans, buying and selling goods and a buy-back scheme. They found they were regularly being asked about repairs, so decided to start the service. However, the business idea is very different from the career path they originally set out on. Rob was previously a Painter and Decorator, and Joe was a plumber. “I didn’t want to do that for the rest of my life” said Joe. “We were tired of working on building sites and with Rob having some experience in the business we decided to have a crack at it.”
Due to the success, they are now planning to expand and a third shop is in the pipeline, in another area of Plymouth. They have also recently set up another company called The Phoneshop, buying and selling online. “Selling the latest iPhones and iPads which we get from suppliers at a low price.” “We’re also selling laptops, which our technicians build from scratch.” “It’s going well – not everyone can afford to buy brand new.” “We’re just looking to develop every day,” Mr Stephens said. The business partners have high hopes for the enterprise and are looking forward to the bright future ahead. Propeller - The Comedy of Errors 7th – 10th May, The Lyric, Theatre Royal In Shakespeare’s smartest and most farcical play, The Comedy of Errors, two sets of estranged twins, separated at birth, find themselves in the same city 25 years later with hilarious consequences. A series of mistaken identities, assumed personas, and wild mishaps bring a family crisis – so complicated that time itself loses the plot – into heart-warming focus.
Sizwe Banzi is Dead 7th - 10th May, The Drum, Theatre Royal Sizwe Banzi’s passbook gives him just three days to find work or he will be deported. When he stumbles across a dead body with a passbook, he asks himself – could he give up his family and his name in order to survive? The play exposes the struggle for freedom and identity in apartheid-era South Africa, unravelling the brutal absurdities of everyday life under oppression.

Plymouth Oracle Magazine Exclusive Interview!
THE SATURDAYS
ANNOUNCE UK TOUR THAT WILL CONCLUDE IN PLYMOUTH! Interview by Myles Lockwood
The Saturdays have announced their new Greatest Hits Album and Tour, which is set to take the UK by storm later this year and the tour will finish right here in Plymouth!
The new Greatest Hits Album and accompanying tour sparked rumours the pop sensations The Saturdays may be splitting up. Director of Oracle Magazine Myles Lockwood caught up with Mollie King and Vanessa White, who confirmed they are still going strong and talked about their plans for the year ahead. So you have recently released a new single ‘Not Giving Up’. Can you tell us about it? Mollie: It’s definitely classic Saturdays! It’s
quite a dancy track, it’s more towards the ‘All Fired Up’ pop vein I guess. It’s actually our fans favourite on this album, so that’s why we released it, and we’re just hoping that everyone else likes it too!
On the single cover, it looks like you are all holding large fluorescent tubes or Lightsabers. Does that relate to the style of the video? Mollie: The single cover will make no sense
if you haven’t seen the video, but were all holding light beams. That then carries through to the cover of the single. We wanted the video to be quite graphic, quite cool and sort of dance-esque, so that’s what that is all about.
How much fun was it making the video? Vanessa: We had such a blast making the
video, honestly! It was quite a long day, but we had a new routine and it was a lot of fun dancing together.
Mollie: Those beams though, I’m telling you, they were so hot!
The Saturdays have a big announcement to tell the readers of Oracle, would you like to tell us what that is? Mollie: I would love to! It’s the fact that we’re releasing a Greatest Hits Album and were going on a Greatest Hits Tour.
Vanessa White and Mollie King from The Saturdays 34 May 2014
Call Oracle Magazine 01752 691007
Wow, that’s great news! When will that start? Mollie: The album comes out on 11th www.oracle.uk.net
info@oracle.uk.net
August and the Greatest Hits Tour starts 7th September. So we are going to have a really busy summer planning it all and with all the rehearsals. We’ve got a lot of staging, lots of costumes and so much to plan for this tour so I don’t think we’re going to get much rest!
The new Greatest Hits Album features over thirteen top ten singles. Other than the new single “Not Giving Up”. Will it include any new tracks? Vanessa: Yes there are going to be 3 new
tracks on the Greatest Hits Album and we’re literally still in the middle of recording them and choosing them now!
Do you have any favorites on the new album? Mollie: Oh I do. I don’t like to pick favorites
but I’m going to have to! I love Notorious, I also love Issues, and I like Higher as well.
Notorious is one of our favorites, the video was incredible! Mollie: Me too! That’s definitely my favorite video of all of ours!
The video Higher is brilliant too. Was it filmed at Universal Studios? Mollie: Do you know what the weird thing
was? It was filmed in the Warner Brother Studios, but we were in LA pretending to be in New York! We were like; surely we could just go to New York and film it there? But no, we always like to do things the complicated way round!
Will there be any Fan or VIP packages available for your new tour? Mollie: I think we will be doing meet and
greet, yes! But the thing about our shows, is that we love a bit of crowd participation. We love the crowd to get involved and everyone to sing along. It’s really going to be a full on pop show, with loads of special effects, lots of different costumes and all of the hits. So it’s just going to have a real party vibe. We are going to go out with a bang!
Usually a band will release a Greatest Hits Album once they pass the peak of their career, but you must be at the height of your career right now! Is there any reason why you decided to released the album now? Vanessa: Well, as it stands we have 17
singles, so it felt like a great time for us to put it in a Greatest Hits Album now, rather than later, and having four CDs in one! It just seemed right to be honest. We’re not splitting up at all. We plan to hopefully do another Greatest Hits Album in the future! We’re not going anywhere, and I think after the tour and the album comes out we will still be working on new music next year.
So you will be coming to perform in Plymouth on 23rd September. Is that the last date of your tour?
“We’re actually ending the whole tour in Plymouth! So you guys better look after us and give us a good night out, because we will be doing lots of celebrating!” Mollie: It is! We’re actually ending the whole
tour in Plymouth! So you guys better look after us and give us a good night out, because we will be doing lots of celebrating!
While your down here do you plan to visit any sea front Restaurants or Clubs the City has to offer? Vanessa: Well I think because that will be our last show, we will definitely have a party, so you will all have to come down!
Mollie: Probably! All our families, friends,
babies, boyfriends, husbands, dogs everyone’s going to be there! So if you’re not there - you’re in the minority!
To date, The Saturdays have sold over five million records, with four top ten albums. Did you ever imagine you would ever get to this point in your career? Mollie: Oh my goodness, it’s weird when you
say that because for us it’s been quite a gradual, growing process. So when you say it like that, we have actually have achieved a lot! But there have been so many different highlights and there is still so much that we each want to achieve. It’s incredible when you put it like that though, it’s weird to get your head around!
How long have the band been together now? You all must be very good friends! Vanessa: Almost 7 Years! That’s crazy isn’t it! I think in the beginning people where like ‘do you really get on?’ and people don’t really ask us that anymore because I think it’s obvious, you know. There’s no way we would still be together now if we didn’t got on! It just wouldn’t have worked.
Please mention Oracle Magazine when responding to adverts
The band were put together by a record company through auditions. What made you decide to peruse a singing career and go for the auditions? Vanessa: Well ever since I was very young,
I knew that I wanted to sing. I just knew! I went to stage school and I was doing loads of auditions anyway. So when this came about it was the one that I didn’t expect to get to be honest, but that’s always the way isn’t it! I was only 17, it was pretty incredible. I was very lucky!
Mollie: I have wanted to be in a band since
I was about 6 years old, but my parents wouldn’t let me do any auditions until I had done my A levels! Once I did that, I joined a girl band and gigged all around the country and then it was through that, that I was asked to come and audition for The Saturdays, so I have also been very lucky.
So I bet your parents are really chuffed that you did it? Mollie: They are, and a bit shocked too I
think! They’re like, ‘oh my god she’s actually done it!’ (Laughs)
The last date of the tour in Plymouth will certainly be a big night for you. We look forward to seeing you perform in September! Vanessa: Thank you! Mollie: Thank you very much! We shall see
you there!

Ten-Year Plan for Redevelopment of Plymouth Rail Station Work to create an exciting 10 year master plan for the redevelopment of Plymouth Rail Station and the surrounding area is now under way.
T
he 10 year plan, which is one of Plymouth City Council’s 100 pledges, will be developed in partnership with station owner Network Rail, station operator First Great Western and Plymouth University. As well as improving capacity at the station, it aims to create a more welcoming ‘gateway’ to the city, revitalising the area around the station and its approaches. Rail is the most important public transport mode for longer distance trips to and from Plymouth and the rail station has seen consistent passenger growth of about four per cent each year over the last decade. Footfall is now in excess of 2.5 million a year, compared with 1.4 million in 2002/2003 and the station needs more capacity to deal with increasing passenger numbers as both the population and rail use continue to grow. The start of work on the plan follows the recent announcement of a multimillion-pound investment package for the city centre, which includes a new intercity coach hub on the site of the closed Mayflower West multi-storey car park. It will also build on the recent investment made by the Council (partfunded by the Department for Transport and Sustrans) to improve pedestrian and

cycle access to the station, complemented by improvements made by First Great Western to the entrance and passenger waiting area. These have included the extension of the concourse, new customer information screens and improvements to waiting areas and toilets. A major upgrade of the pedestrian subway within the station is also now under way. Council Leader Tudor Evans said: “Plymouth is the leading economic driver in the far South West and needs a railway and a station that are fit for the 21st century. A city with a population of 261,000 and growing, it also deserves a more welcoming gateway than is currently offered. This plan will transform the station and its surroundings over the next 10 years and create a regional rail hub that can better match Plymouth’s growth aspirations.” Sarah McManus, Major Projects Manager for First Great Western said: “First Great Western is pleased to be working with Plymouth City Council, Network Rail and Plymouth University to

develop plans for the station. We know the importance the Council and the city place on good, resilient rail links and we are delighted to be part of the group that will now work together to take plans forward. We are currently working on a £500,000 upgrade to the station subway. Formal consultation has also started on a timetable change that will see an earlier arrival into Plymouth from London.” Professor Julian Beer, Pro ViceChancellor (Regional Enterprise) at Plymouth University, said: “As a city with great ambitions, Plymouth deserves a transport system that enables residents, students and businesses alike to stay connected with the rest of the UK. The railway station is a vital gateway to the city, and through the 10-year plan we are working to create a memorable first impression for all who use it. This is an important project for the University and the city and, combined with other recent infrastructure investments and expanding innovation and enterprise programmes, we are creating a platform for Plymouth to thrive in the future.”

Plymouth History Festival celebrates City’s unique heritage for a second year The programme for the Plymouth’s 2014 History Festival has gone live and features over 100 different events.
T
he festival will take place from 1st to 31st May and aims to bring a number of historical events in the city under one banner, as well as provide residents and visitors with a focal point for celebrating and discovering Plymouth’s unique heritage. The festival caters for all ages and interests and events will be held in many different locations, not just in the city centre but also around the Hoe, the Barbican, the Royal William Yard, the Millfields and in many of the suburbs. Venues range from church halls and guildhalls to civic buildings
and historic houses. The festival will kick off with the opening of the city’s flagship World War I and ‘Three Towns’ centenary exhibition, ‘Plymouth’s Great War: Three Towns United in Conflict’. The show is one of a number of ways in which the city will be commemorating 100 years since the start of the First World War, as well as celebrating 100 years since the three towns of Plymouth, Devonport and East Stonehouse became one, throughout 2014. It will be on display from 1st May to 29th November at the City Museum and Art Gallery. “Plymouth History Festival launched last year and was a great success – bringing together so many different organisations and societies under one programme and providing a huge variety of opportunities for people to discover more and learn about
the City they live in and come to visit,” says Deputy Leader, Councillor Peter Smith. “This year is even more significant with two big centenaries to remember and many of the Festival events will highlight these key moments in history. It’s a huge achievement to go live with such an extensive programme already and I’m sure more events will be added as we get closer to May.” The History Festival programme also features displays, family-friendly activities, talks, presentations, guided tours and walks and a series of special one-off events. Many are free although a lot of the events require advance booking.
Information and contact details for each of the events can be found on the website at www. plymhistoryfest.wordpress.com.
