editor's note.. Plymouth is set to come alive with festive cheer this month, when the city’s Christmas lights are switched on. The Christmas Festival and celebrations will include a Christmas market, the ever popular Santa’s Grotto and an exciting parade will fill the streets, getting everyone into the Christmas spirit (page 28).
During the colder months, it can be difficult to find the motivation to get out and exercise. Why not try a low impact exercise that you can do in your own home? The benefits of Yoga are numerous. Not only is it a stress relieving exercise, but it also has the power to help prevent and heal a variety of health issues including chronic diseases (page 8).
The annual outdoor ice rink has returned, and Plymouth’s Piazza has been transformed into a winter wonderland. Voted as one of Plymouth’s best visitor attractions, the ice rink offers delights for everyone and invites families, first time or even professional skaters to come and enjoy the facilities. There will even be a magical array of shows, events and activities for all ages (see page 27).
Thank you to all our advertisers and readers for your continued support. I hope you enjoy this issue of the Plymouth Oracle and I’ll catch up with you next month!

The Healing Power of Yoga The benefits of Yoga are numerous. Not only is it a low impact, stress relieving exercise, but it also has the power to help prevent and heal a variety of health issues. By Lucy McGowan.
I
t can be hard to find the motivation to begin an exercise routine and there is always an endless list of excuses not to join the nearest gym! It is a challenge finding the balance between work, social activities and home life and try to fit in time to exercise. However, never underestimate the fact that exercise is an important part of life, and it is just about discovering the right fitness regime that you find the most rewarding. If you are looking for a low impact, strengthening exercise suitable for all ages and fitness levels, then yoga is definitely for you! Not only are there some great classes available across the city but there are also a huge range of DVDs and YouTube videos with experienced yoga teachers, that you can practice in your own home, any time you like.
There are many different types of Yoga and an endless variety of poses that work out your entire body. These poses develop your strength and flexibility and can also improve your health and wellbeing. This is due to the concentration required and the meditation techniques, which instantly calm the mind and reduce stress levels. The physical and mental disciplines in the practice achieve peacefulness of body and mind, which in turn help with relaxation and manage stress and anxiety. If practiced correctly, Yoga also has many healing benefits. Your body reacts to injury or irritation by becoming inflamed and this can lead to chronic diseases including heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis and diabetes. Yoga can reduce inflammation in the body and

“Yoga can reduce inflammation in the body and relieve symptoms of a variety of health issues” relieve symptoms of a variety of health issues by boosting the immune system and increasing overall health, making these problems much more manageable. Due to the fact it can improve your immune system and regulates the production of hormones, recent reports suggest that practicing Yoga may help reduce the risk of some cancers. Even people who have been diagnosed with life threatening illnesses such as cancer have also been shown to benefit from the healing power of Yoga. The stretching exercises can reduce stress and relax the body, which can help relieve some of the side effects of treatment. Emotional well-being is an essential part of recovery, and stress can be a major contributing factor of how our bodies prevent disease and heal themselves. This is why the stress relieving techniques can help impact your state of mind, and even if your mobility is limited, incorporating a regular Yoga regime can prevent disease and help with a wide range of ailments. Yoga is a fantastic option for individuals looking for a way to boost their energy, manage anxiety, and cope with stress. The practice of yoga has a calming effect and provides an endless list of health benefits, which can be specifically helpful to those suffering from chronic illness.

Time to take care... It is a sad fact that, when the clocks go back, accidents increase. Figures from the Department for Transport show that, after the change, the number of road traffic accidents rises. Crashes increase when clocks change Surprisingly, there is an increase in crashes when the clocks change in both March and October, although the autumn change has a far greater impact. The increase in March occurs mainly in afternoons and evenings, but the larger October increase is more evenly spread across all hours of the day.
Pedestrians beware Most of the additional accidents caused in the fortnight after the autumn change seem to involve pedestrians. Road safety analysts advise all road users to take extra care over the coming weeks. The sudden change which affects our daily lives, plunging us into darkness when we were used to daylight for our journeys puts us at greater risk. This is especially true for those who are on foot; they are well advised to take bright clothing with them to ensure that they are visible when night falls an hour earlier.

“There are real benefits of using a local solicitor instead of your insurer’s panel firm” would like to see a change in the law so that evenings are lighter all year round. It says this could prevent around 450 deaths and serious injuries on Britain’s roads each year. In the meantime, motorists are advised to watch their speed as the nights become darker, and be aware that they are less likely to see vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. People should check their lights and brakes and have their cars serviced for the winter. Parents should ensure their children wear bright clothing, preferably with fluorescent or reflective strips. They should check cycles to make sure reflectors are clean and fit new batteries to lights. to use the firm recommended by the insurer. “There are real benefits of using a local solicitor instead of your insurer’s panel firm” says Chris Kallis of Chris Kallis Solicitors. “We always recommend that those who are injured should see a local personal injury specialist, who can offer a face-to-face service, and has established relationships with local therapists who can provide rehabilitation. Don’t wait until you become dissatisfied with poor service. Let us help you from the start to get the best treatment and the financial compensation you deserve.” Contact Chris Kallis Solicitors to arrange a meeting to discuss your claim without any obligation.

Winter Coastal Walks As the days become shorter, you have to choose your days to go walking with more care and make the most of the daylight available and the more unsettled weather. However there is nothing like wrapping up warm on a blustery winter’s day and walking along the Coast Path to watch storm waves pound the cliffs. It’s also the perfect way to unwind with the whole family and walk off the excesses of the increase in indoor living, especially over the Christmas and New Year breaks.
A
s the weather turns chillier, trees and plants shed their leaves and the views that remain are totally different to those in the spring and summer months. Cliffs and coastal buildings come into sharp relieve, with wildlife busy feeding on the autumn harvest in readiness for the darker colder months ahead. If you like to take photographs as you walk, this is a great time to take some. The light is just magical and you can find a number of special shots that are not available to photographers at other times of the year. We have seen the first storms of the season reach our shores and this dramatic contrast to summer means that there are new experiences waiting for you as you plan your next walking trip. It’s good to check ahead to see what the conditions require in the way of clothing and provisions. A good pair of walking boots with thicker socks, may be needed now, and don’t forget a thermal flask for that well earned cuppa whilst gazing out to sea from a bench. In South Devon there are some lovely winter wanders to choose from between
Bantham towards Burgh Island by Sebastian Wasek
the Plymouth and Dartmouth section of the South West Coast Path. Here are three of our favourites:
Dartmouth Town Trail
This one is for the whole family. A short walk of 1.2 miles taking in the town’s historical delights where you won’t get blown along too badly thanks to the shelter away from the coast itself. There are lots of places to stop for a hot cup of cocoa or a Sunday lunch treat for you and the children to enjoy. Start and finish at the Higher Ferry car park.
Bantham to Thurlestone
A beautiful circular walk from Bantham’s main car park for 3.8 miles. A relatively moderate walk with estuary mouth views across to Burgh Island and the Thurlestone Rocks off shore as the walk continues, this is an ideal winter walk. There are two places to have a break for a pub lunch, either at the Sloop Inn in

“In South Devon there are some lovely winter wanders to choose from between the Plymouth and Dartmouth section of the South West Coast Path.” Bantham near the start and finish of the walk or pop into the The Village Inn at Thurlestone or go to both of course!
Wembury & Staddiscombe
This 7.5 mile circular route around Wembury and Bovisand, returns via footpaths and lanes inland starting and finishing at Wembury beach car park (National Trust fee to park). With marvelous views of the famous Mew Stone and the busy shipping lanes of Plymouth sound this walks allows for that ‘blow away the cobwebs’ feeling as well as enjoyment of more sheltered walking away from the coast.

Book Reviews By Pauline Pindar Half a Yellow Sun
Rating:
This is basically a book giving details of the Biafra war in the 1960’s and it is told through four main characters in a very compassionate way. I think few of us really know about the Biafra war, apart from pictures of starving children. The story starts with the lead up to the war which I found very absorbing and it then goes through the war itself. The four main characters are an idealistic university professor, Odenigo, his partner, Olanna,

A beautiful story against the back drop of the deterioration of the Political life of Nigeria as it undergoes a military coup, again a story told by Chimamanda with so much passion. The story is told through a fourteen year old girl Kambili and to a lesser extent her brother. Kimbili grew up in a privileged home but under the

I waited eagerly for this book but have to say, I was very disappointed. I felt there was very little of the passion Adichie showed in the two previous novels and to me it was basically a love story. It also covered quite a long time span and I found this a bit disconcerting although it was interesting in so much that it covered the period when Barrack Obama was voted in as president and it was particularly interesting Ifemelu wavering between Obama, the
I have reviewed three books, all by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I’ve just read her latest one and it occurred to me that some readers may not have read her previous two books, which for me are a must for any avid reader!
his house boy Ugulu and an English journalist Richard who lives with Olanna’s twin sister. The novel is written so well and creates intrigue and suspense all the way through, so much so that I had to keep reading until the end, there is no stopping. It is a very harrowing and distressing account of the war and the author’s passion shows through, I believe she lost several relatives in the war. The things they had to go through and they went from such an affluent lifestyle to one of such poverty and near
starvation. Their survival and resilience was just amazing. There was so much corruption and the misappropriation of emergency relief aid was a real eye opener. What I particularly liked was the descriptions of the people, their traditions and their food. I became very attached to the characters, but Ugulu in particular stood out as a wonderful character and I particularly had an affinity with him. This is probably one of my favourite books and I have read it twice and now feel I want to read it again.
stifling regime of a strict father who also physically abused them and their mother. Through the actions of the father, Kimbali becomes introverted and repressed but finally as Nigeria goes through the Military Coup, Kimbali and her brother are sent to live with her aunt and cousins. This household could not be more different and rather than the privileged life she led, at her aunt’s it is a hand
to mouth existence. Gradually with the help of her aunt and cousins, Kimbili becomes so much happier and a different child. Various issues of religion arise, yet it is not a story of religion but a lovely young priest enters Kimbali’s life and this gives a balanced showing of religion. Again I love the customs and the backdrop against which it is written. A beautiful story.
first black president and Hilary Clinton the first lady president. It is basically the story of Ifemelu who is a strong willed, intelligent girl and her boyfriend, Obinze, who I found to be rather a weak character. The two grew up in Nigeria and both always had the dream of going to America. Ifemelu started her studies in Nigeria and then after many strikes there, chose to go to America to complete them and Obinze followed on later but sadly as an illegal immigrant. Where Obinze fails, Ifemelu thrives. The love story twists and turns, dipping
at one time into Britain for a brief period and finally after finishing her studies, the ties of Nigeria draw her back. The book does talk in a clever way about racism and immigration and how different it is in the USA and UK, to Nigeria. It does have humour and nostalgia but at times is over poignant on racism. It did not make me feel I had to keep reading, although at all times I was not sure what the ending would be. Perhaps if I had not read Purple Hibiscus and Half a Yellow Sun, I would have rated this book more highly.

The simple but effective business model has been piloted for over 5 years in the city of Plymouth and has had enormous success by connecting local businesses with residential consumers by way of offers and voucher’s in an easily

Franchise Director Myles Lockwood said “I first noticed the business was doing well after the first year, so by year 2 I realised the model could be packaged into a franchise and rolled out across the UK to any city, town or village” Myles went onto say“ the great thing about Business Card Xpress is its totally measurable to all businesses that add an exclusive offer to the reverse of their

How Julie saved £144,000 Julie* from Plymouth worked hard as a social care worker. She also planned for the future, putting money away faithfully into her Final Salary pension scheme. She could expect a comfortable retirement. But there was a problem. Julie had a health scare, which prompted her to think: what if retirement never comes...?
D
ivorced, and with an adult daughter, Julie had no dependents. If Julie died before retirement, her pension savings – worth £176,000 – would be mostly wiped out. Her daughter would only receive ‘return of contributions’ plus interest, totalling about £32,000.
Julie decided her priority was to ensure her daughter inherited. After looking carefully at the pros and cons, she opted to come out of the pension scheme and take the cash equivalent lump sum. Giving up a Final Salary pension scheme should not be undertaken lightly. It offers good retirement payments, which stay in place until you die; although the death benefits are not so good. Julie only did this after careful thought, and many conversations with me. Julie was able to clear off her mortgage, and saves the monthly payments. All her money is under her control. She can still invest for her future, knowing her daughter will not lose out. Taking these steps has safeguarded £144,000! Taking professional advice, understanding the pension rules and thinking laterally made a huge difference to this family. Next year, changes in the pension

rules mean people aged 55+ will have greater freedom in using their pension savings. And the abolition of the 55% ‘death tax’, charged when inheriting a pension from someone age Mike LeGassick 75+, will make pensions a more interesting vehicle for saving and passing on an inheritance (although some lower rate taxes may still apply). Speak to me, and I can help you explore how to make the most of your pension, and secure your and your family’s future. Award Winning Company offer tailor made service Photography by Tom Coles
The award winning bathroom and kitchen fitting team at Jobel in Millbay Road, Plymouth, has just received a huge new accolade as Laura Ashley is providing them with the licence to stock their range.
T
he new Laura Ashley items were fitted into the showroom last week and it includes the prestigious bathroom range, where even the taps are marked with the Laura Ashley name. Mike Freeman, proprietor of Jobel, told Oracle, “It is the name of quality and we are excited to be stocking their range and getting out there and installing it.” “We are very proud of it as it is something that they would only put into a well established showroom which met certain criteria.” Jobel, which was formed in 1998, provides a tailor made service for clients. The team help people to design their dream bathroom using state of the art graphics to create a 3D screen image of what it’ll look like once finished. And, thanks to their computerised system, they can then provide you with an accurate quote for the work. Mike explains, “Our ordering system keeps up to date on all the prices so there are no price quibbles, which makes the quote to the client itemised and exact.” Mike explains they are completely transparent in their pricing so that VAT is included in the pricing. Payment can be made with a 10% deposit with 50% paid on the day of arrival and the remaining upon completion.
Once you’ve decided on a bathroom then there is a free site visit for a consultation and they’ll provide you with a full breakdown on the quote itself – with prices starting from just £3,000 which includes the costs of recycling the old bathroom.
It is this approach to service, with the emphasis on the customer satisfaction, that has meant the company has been inundated with “Thank You” cards and messages over the 16 years that it has been in business. “We thought our new bathroom was excellent,” says 74 year old Christopher McCarthy, from Plympton. “Our old one

hadn’t been touched since 1939 and so we decided to have the bath taken out and had a new shower, mirror with light and a towel rail, tiling on the floors and also have plastering done for the walls and the ceiling.” Mike is a trained electrician and plumber himself and so, sometimes, finds himself working on jobs when the need arises, such as when one of his team is called away to be with his wife when she’s giving birth! “Earlier this year, one of our fitters was in the middle of a job when his wife went into labour.” “We never leave a customer in the lurch and so I stepped in to finish the work so he could be with her and their newborn son. We are a big family here and we were Mike Freeman delighted!”

Tom’s Photography Column
I
’m Tom, part of the design team here at Oracle Publications. In my spare time I am a keen photographer and always have a camera with me everywhere I go. The main subject matter I like to photograph is portraiture and I spend many hours in a studio I share. The reason for this column is to share tips and advice from my own experience in the field of photography to help others develop their skills no matter what ability. I have recently returned from a trip around part of Europe and seen some dramatic landscapes, so thought this would be a great place to start. You would think landscape photography is one of the easiest types of photography to endeavour, as you just turn up and point your camera at a large open area right? However, it is actually one of the most difficult to master but by sticking to a few basic rules, you’ll walk away with photos that have that wow factor!
Camera setting: Depending on the type
of camera you have access to, you want to select a small aperture, somewhere around f/22 or f/16. This helps with keeping the image sharp throughout the scene. A

Time of day: This time of year is great
successful landscape photo. Look up the ‘rule of thirds’, if you have internet access as it will help a lot. If not, simply divide your frame into thirds both on the horizontal and vertical axis. Now frame your image to include areas of interest where the lines intersect, so it could be a stone wall, object, building, tree etc. Another thing to remember is to ensure your horizon is straight, however don’t be afraid to throw away the rule book as you should be
for landscape photography as there are later sunrises and sunsets. Photographers tend to shoot early in the morning or during late afternoons when the sun is lower, the reason for this is less contrast from strong sunlight and you get delicate moody hues of colour. These times of the days are often referred to as to the magic or golden hours. I hope these tips have been useful and until next time, I will leave you with one of my holiday snaps from Grimsel Pass, Switzerland.

The festival and Christmas celebrations will begin on Thursday 13th November with the annual Christmas light switch-on. Singer and Panto star, Chico, and British R&B band, Damage, have been confirmed as the special guests this year, and more will be announced soon. Taking place on Thursday 13th November outside Drake Circus from 4pm, with entertainment provided by Heart, visitors will be able to see the city centre transform with many new lighting features. The new features will replace old and outdated lights on Cornwall Street and New George Street and are expected to bring a more modern feel to Christmas. Chico, most commonly known for
being part of the popular TV show, X Factor, in 2005, is playing Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk – this year’s panto at the Plymouth Theatre Royal. Following X factor his first single Chico Time knocked Madonna off the top of the charts giving him his first number one hit. The singer turned skating-star, captivating the nation with spectacular routines on ITV1’s Dancing on Ice, proving ever-popular with the voting public, reached the final. He said: “I’m so excited to be helping turn on the Christmas lights in Plymouth this year. Everyone here seems so friendly and it’ll be great to see many people getting into the Christmas spirit. The lights always give that extra special feeling and you know once they’re on Christmas really is on its way. I hope to see lots of people there on the 13th – we’re sure to have a Christmassy Chico time.”

Protect yourself from Malware Malware: a generic term for any number of different malicious programs that are often referred to by more complicated names. Malware has always been a problem and it can be very scary when you realise just how easily your machine can be infected and your data stolen. Nowadays you can be infected just by visiting a webpage that has itself been hacked...but if you remember the two simple rules below you will be a lot safer.
T
he main rule with online scams is to be just as uncomfortable with any suggestion online as you would be if a stranger walked up to you in the street with the same suggestion. A good idea with
unusual messages purporting to be from family or friends is to ask yourself how out of character they sound. For instance, if a friend who loves the Bake Off sends you a message about the latest episode with a link then it’s probably genuine, but if that same friend sends you investment advice then it might be best not to click the link and talk to them first. It’s also important to make sure you have an up-to-date anti-virus installed. There are plenty of very good ones available for free, so it’s not necessary to spend to be protected! If you aren’t sure what you are doing with this then it’s best to ask a friend, family member or even a professional for help. Calling a professional to make sure the job is done thoroughly can seem like a costly solution for something you usually manage to muddle through but we are happy to help. Coming to us after things go wrong is often like going to the mechanic after your engine explodes rather than getting a quick oil change when you need it! By having an up-to-date anti-virus installed and approaching everything online with a degree of mistrust you can usually protect yourself from any malicious individuals but if you need help with
