LIGHT IT UP This month more than four tonnes of fireworks will be set off over Plymouth Sound (18th-19th of August), showering the skies with colour, as the country's top pyrotechnics companies battle it out for the coveted national title. By Nimra Imran The highly anticipated event in Plymouth's annual calendar will welcome thousands of spectators, heading to the Hoe for two spectacular evenings of entertainment, including the fantastic firework displays from this year's contestants. Plymouth Hoe will be the perfect viewing spot for this truly incredible sight and thousands of Plymouth residents and holiday makers are expected to turn up for the event. We will see displays from six contestants this year; 1st Galaxy Fireworks, Gala Fireworks, Fantastic Fireworks, Spyrotechnics, Phoenix Fireworks and Essex Pyrotechnics. The contestants are selected each year by a draw in order to take part, three on each evening of the event. Additionally, every six years there is a Champions event when winners from the previous five years (plus the previous Champion-of-Champions winner) return to battle it out for the overall title Championof-Champions.The British Firework Championships 8
were started in 1997 by the Event Services Association (TESA), a trade body representing the outdoor events industry in the UK. The Championships have grown hugely and are now recognised as the premier annual display in the UK, attracting tens of thousands to the city each August. Despite varying weather conditions over the years - and even a World War II bomb being found on the site - the event has successfully taken place every year since it started. Entertainment will start from around 6pm with live music, fairground rides and refreshment stalls. The first fireworks display will start at around 9:30 pm each evening as dusk falls. As the Hoe is the focal point for watching the Championships, entertainment will be provided throughout both evenings. Believed to be Britain's most spectacular fireworks display, the British Firework Championships offer a visual treat, certainly not to be missed.

Derek Jordan Specialist Solicitor
What are my parental rights now I’m separated? Derek Jordan, a Solicitor with The Family Law Company in Plymouth, answers some common questions about Parental Responsibility when a couple separates. Q. I have just separated from my girlfriend after being together for over five years – we have two children aged three and a half years and eighteen months. Since we separated two months ago, the mother has only let me see the children at the house infrequently and for very short periods. She has also told me that because she is the mother and the children live with her, I have no rights and she will decide what happens with the children. Is it correct that I have no rights as their father? A. No, that’s not correct. Whilst everyone can be said to have ‘rights’, in legal terms what is more important is whether you have Parental Responsibility (PR) for your children. The definition of PR is conferring upon a person all the rights, duties, powers, responsibilities and authority that a parent ordinarily has towards a child. Essentially, PR means having the ability to make decisions for a child, deciding, for example, day-to-day things like where you take them, who you introduce them to and who you leave them with (e.g. grandparents who may be babysitting). For major decisions about a child’s welfare, such as schooling and medical treatment, a person with PR will have the right to be consulted. In your case, if you have PR for the children you will be entitled to obtain information about them from schools, GPs, dentists etc. without having to go via the mother. I often receive requests to contact a child’s school asking them to note on their records that a person has PR for a particular child and wants to receive specific information about them and have their own copy of reports or photographs. Q. In this case I wasn’t married to the mother. Does this mean I don’t have PR? A. Not necessarily. If you had been married to the mother you would automatically have PR but since 2003, unmarried fathers also have PR if they have been named as the father on a child’s birth certificate. 18
Q. If I don’t have PR, is there any way I can now get it? A. Yes, there are various ways you can obtain PR if you are not on the birth certificate. You could enter into a formal ‘Parental Responsibility Agreement’ with the mother if she is willing to do so. If she is not, you could make an application to the court for an Order giving you PR. However, before any application to the court is made, you are likely to have to try mediation. I always suggest mediation in cases where it is appropriate because it is an excellent way for parents to meet on neutral ground to discuss what the arrangements should be for their children. It’s important to note that a father does not have to have PR to pursue regular time with their child. Q. If I do have PR does that mean that the mother will have to let me have the children when I say? A. It’s not that simple and it is rarely right for either party simply to dictate to the other what will happen. How things are sorted out will still rely on you and the mother negotiating and agreeing what the arrangements will be. Any arrangements will have to be workable for both parents but most importantly be best for the children. I always encourage clients to work with the other parent (where it is safe for them to do so) to reach such an agreement and only make an application to the court when absolutely necessary or to formalise an agreement. The actual arrangements made will be different for each family and, of course, will probably need to be altered over time to adapt to life’s changes and circumstances. The ideal outcome is that there is regular, good quality time for the children to spend with their mother and with you, as well as a sharing of school holidays and important occasions such as birthdays and Christmas wherever possible.

R
efurnish is a charity that takes great pride in the work that they do. Their principle aims are to help people on low incomes by providing low cost reusable furniture at discounted prices and reduce the waste in your local community. The charity aims to help everyone including those who are trying to set up home for the first time and may be struggling to furnish on a low budget. We rely on your kind donations to keep us going and these generous gifts can be passed on at a greatly reduced rate for everyone to enjoy. Refurnish doors are open to everyone and they offer a friendly service both from their staff and volunteers. Free collection is also available for all of your large items of furniture which can be resold and for all white goods which are in working order. To take advantage of this call their central number on 01752 927002 and select the number of the branch you would like to donate to. You’ll be asked a few questions and then booked in for a viewing of the items on offer. Building work at their Wrangaton HQ is well under way and opening new doors for the community household reuse project. Now the building controls have given them approval to create a rear door so the furniture area will now increase in size giving
more space for an improved shop layout. This will also allow the new upcycling project to get under way which involves looking at new ways to reuse some of the more difficult items needing rehoming. The ideas include making planters out of pallets and reupholstering some of the good quality sofas that are kindly donated. “We passionately believe in recycling,” said Refurnish’s David Banks, “but the project is also a vehicle to help reduce social isolation and give a sense of purpose for people who may be unemployed or retired and may have a variety of support needs by providing volunteering, training and employment.” The charity is always looking for people with spare time and skills who would like to get involved in the project from drivers mate to shop assistant or who can offer training in upholstery, wood work or general maintenance.
If you want to help or get involved in any way, call David Banks on 01364 73206, email davidbanks@refurnish.org.uk, or visit our website: www.refurnish.org.uk
