Editor’s Note ... March, named after Mars, the Roman god of war, is a very busy month. It’s the first month of Spring, Women’s History Month, St. Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day and - of course - Easter. We are all familiar with the tale of Easter but how much do we know about the Easter egg itself? How did it turn out to become such a significant part of the holiday celebrations? Turn to page 36 to find out! And don’t miss pages 14 and 15 where you will find our monthly What’s On Guide, presenting you with a whole host of things to do, for both children and adults, during the busy Easter holiday. Lastly, the time has come for me to move on to new adventures and say goodbye to all of the Plympton Community Magazine’s readers and advertisers. Please give a warm and friendly welcome to Melissa Wylie who will be taking over the role from April onwards! I hope our lovely readers enjoy this edition of the Plympton Community Magazine and every fantastic deal that our advertisers are offering. Stay tuned for more to come in the next few months. Beacon Electrical Appliance Concept Store Now Open! Beacon Electrical, the local and family-owned premier retailer of domestic goods since 1976, has established a partnership with the world’s largest manufacturer of kitchen appliances to collectively create a brand new showroom showcasing renowned brands such as Hotpoint, Indesit, Whirlpool and KitchenAid.

B

ack in 2015, the American giant Whirlpool Corporation bought the Hotpoint, Indesit and Cannon brands which successfully sky-rocketed the company upwards to be the world’s largest official electrical appliance manufacturer. Before the purchase of these renowned brands, Whirlpool had already owned several other big brand names including KitchenAid, Maytag, Consul, Amana, Bauknecht and Ignis. Although the corporation was the dominating operator throughout America and Asia, it only had a small share of the market in Europe. By purchasing the Hotpoint, Indesit and Cannon businesses, Whirlpool dominated Western Europe which it continues to do so today.

have already had massive market share in the UK and are already a big part of the Beacon Electrical business. They operate in all the appliance sectors, from cookers, to washing machines and tumble dryers, to dishwashers, and to fridge freezers… and even kettles, toasters, irons and a range of other small appliances.” Also on display is a strong selection of the current Whirlpool products available which operate in all the above appliance sectors. Whirlpool will position itself above Hotpoint in the marketplace and truly uses innovative technology to help create increased performance and lower the energy use, whilst still maintaining the sleek, user-friendly design.

In order to showcase the range of varied appliances that this cutting-edge manufacturer can offer, the company has been looking to partner with existing premium retailers who can offer an abundance of retail space and display a wide range of their brand new electrical and gas products.

And finally, the very exclusive brand of KitchenAid is now on display. KitchenAid is mostly known for their premium food mixers, however the brand also strongly focuses on their prestigious large kitchen appliances; these are the show-stoppers of the appliance world. Beacon Electrical has luxurious KitchenAid ovens and hobs on display which have a higher level of performance, build quality and specifications than what the team has ever seen.

The Beacon Electrical store, situated in Pennycomequick, jumped at this fantastic opportunity and the branch at 15 Stuart Road has just finished a complete transformation into a bespoke Whirlpool Corporation showroom. It is the first and only store to exist in the entire country, and it is here in Plymouth.

To support this new venture, Beacon has strengthened their price match policy. They will now guarantee to match any advertised price on Hotpoint, Indesit, and Whirlpool products – including Internet companies. “This means we can guarantee the best price and offer the best local service too.”

There are updates to finish, however the branch opened its’ doors little before December last year and customers have already left testimonials to say how impressed they are with the new refurbishment and the new products available on display. “We have a much wider range of Indesit and Hotpoint products than what we could previously fit into our store. These are big brands which

Make a Memorable Mothering Sunday Y our mum deserves a lot more than just a card and flowers on her special day. Give her the gift of time and lasting memories this Mother’s Day.

Give her a day off from life’s duties and offer to do her shopping, cleaning and cooking; after all, she did yours for years! Bring her breakfast in bed along with her favourite book and tell her to stay rested. Once every errand is complete, and once she has had a nice lie-in, use the day to spend some quality time with her (and wait on her every whim)! Sometimes a simple walk can do wonders. We are lucky to be a part of one of the most beautiful counties in the UK, so the possibilities and the places to go are simply endless. Take her for a walk through the scenic Dartmoor, down the South West Costal Path or hop on the ferry over to Whitsand Bay. She will greatly appreciate all the free time she gets to spend with you, especially if you no longer live with her. If you do fancy splashing the cash, spend it on activities that you both would not usually get the chance to do. Why not book a floristry class so she can choose and arrange her own

flowers? Or a luxury spa day for you both to relax and unwind? Or even a boat trip for a gentle cruise around Plymouth Sound? Use this day to simply get out of the house and give her your company. Find a gorgeous county house hotel to indulge in afternoon tea, book tickets to see a new romcom and then treat her to an evening dinner at her favourite local restaurant. There are plenty of home-made surprises that your mother will also appreciate. A symbolic gesture such as a scrapbox filled with photos, notes and trinkets acts a heartfelt, keepsake gift that is certain to bring a happy tear to her eye! Don’t forget about your friends who have children; is your close friend a new mum? As a kind gesture, offer to babysit for the day so she can have the chance to put her feet up. Being a mum can be a very stressful job, so a detox kit will go down a treat. Fill a ribbon-tied, decorative box with bath bombs, scented candles, herbal tea and a sleep mask so she can continue to get some good quality, well-earned rest after Mother’s Day is over.

Alexandra Boardman Chartered Legal Executive

you be in an abusive Could relationship? By Alexandra Boardman

Alexandra Boardman from The Family Law Company considers controlling or coercive behaviour with reference to Jane Austen. Part One A scenario: My best friend, we’ll call her Marianne, has just split up with her boyfriend, who we’ll call Mr Willoughby. If you’re a reader of classical fiction, or you’ve seen the film, you’ll know that Marianne and Mr Willoughby are characters from Jane Austen’s book ‘Sense and Sensibility’. I dubbed Marianne’s boyfriend Mr Willoughby after he spent a weekend at my home with his girlfriend, my best friend, last summer. I’ve known them both for a number of years, but they only entered into a relationship with each other early last year. Over the weekend I observed my friend in her new relationship and saw how the two interacted in a fairly relaxed environment. I thought it would be interesting to see if Marianne had changed – she had previously had a series of disastrous relationships. To my critical eye, Mr Willoughby had many flaws. Most obvious was his desire for status and money, which led to his nickname. However, underneath were more, less obvious flaws, some of which made me feel concern for my friend. These included an underlying perception of inadequacy, which revealed itself in little digs and belittlements aimed at Marianne. On occasion, he made flagrant statements that showed he needed to feel superior to her, letting her know that he was her superior and very much in charge. My friend was oblivious and took this in her stride − looking on adoringly and emphasising to me at every opportunity what a catch Mr Willoughby was. Somewhat cynically, I gave it 6 – 12 months before either the “demands of his pocketbook” took precedence or she realised that he was just another, more exaggerated form, of the type of man she had been attracted to in the past. In fact, as a result of a previous, imprudent match, my friend lost her financial security and is therefore not much of a catch in terms of money. Mr Willoughby is simply the next in line in a pattern of concerning behaviours that Marianne has exhibited by her choice of men since her twenties. Now approaching middle age, and as a result of illadvised choices made from assurances and promises 16

given by Mr Willoughby, my friend’s position has become desperate. In a very short time after that visit to me, she was homeless, in significant debt and had to leave her job. She has also worn out her welcome with most friends and family members. I suspect we all know of at least one friend, or a friend of a friend, whose choices seem to go from bad to worse. For anyone in this cycle, it is recognising and identifying the pattern that is the most difficult thing. As friends we can offer advice based on common sense, but this only seems to go so far, even if it is exactly what is needed. Luckily, self-preservation kicks in for most people who find themselves in this type of situation before matters get too desperate. However, for a significant number, this form of defence is worn away so much that they only realise what is happening when nearly everything has been lost. We all have patterns and we all have expectations; we build our world around our experiences and what we believe. In order to break a pattern, we need to change what we believe and what we expect. This sounds very simplistic, but to some degree it is. It’s the realisation that if you do the same thing you’ll get the same outcome, and if you change what you do, you are likely to get a different outcome. So how does all this fit in with controlling or coercive behaviour – also termed ‘abusive’ behaviour? Abusive behaviour is also a pattern, by the abuser to the victim. Although sometimes abusive behaviour creeps into a relationship from nowhere, more often than not the signs are there right from the start. For some reason, people just ignore the signs. Perhaps this is because they don’t want to see them. Most people go into a new relationship hoping for the best, giving a little ground and with a genuine belief that it will be different this time; hope triumphs over experience. It takes effort to recognise when things aren’t right, and courage to do something about it. If you are in an abusive relationship and need help, contact Alexandra at The Family Law Company. DIAL A CAB

33-33-33

Onward and Upward for New Local Taxi Company Merger! In July 2015, Plymcabs joined forces with one of the largest operators in Plymouth, Crownhill Taxi Services Ltd. Crownhill Taxis established itself in the 1950s and has been operated by Andy Wheeler and family since 1994 under the name Dial A Cab 33-33-33. The reason behind this merger was due to the overall running costs in sustaining a small local office with minimal driver coverage. The group now boasts over 106 drivers giving the firm the man-power it needed, whilst still maintaining strong local client values. New owner Andy Wheeler said, “It’s been one of the best businesses decisions I’ve ever made The company is growing stronger every day, we have still kept the existing management team and we have still kept the same client values that Plymcabs have always been known for. The company is one of the largest suppliers of contract work to Plymouth City Council and all the drivers have

enhanced DBS checks. In addition to this the company also operate a fleet of executive hire Mercedes and executive people carriers for airport runs or special occasions, as well as specialist disabled vehicles. Cliff, the previous owner of Plymcabs, said “I’m very pleased with this merger. The company can now move forward and upward as I’ve always wanted it to, including the ability to now be able to take Debit and Credit card payments in all the cars, and the company is still locally focused with the back up and support of a larger fleet”. Despite certain rumours Plymcabs categorically state that the number 77-7777 will not be ceasing operations and will still continue to be the main number to call for any booking along with the additional Dial A Cab number of 33-33-33.

PLYMPTON BASED MANUFACTURER

EXPANDS FOR 2016

R

ight Price PVCu, based in Plympton’s Newnham Industrial Estate, has kicked off to a booming start in 2016. Since OM last spoke to Sarah and Travis back in September, the business has grown bigger and better and they tell us their exciting plans for the near future. Building on the well-known Right Price name, which has been built up over nearly three decades, Sarah and Travis are now entering their 4th year of ownership, developing the firm to one of the South West’s leading manufacturers & installers of windows and doors & conservatories. This year will see Right Price moving over to manufacturing their products with Eurocell profile; the market leader for energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, security and style. The move will enable Right Price to offer their customers even more choice, with greater colour options, and window and door styles to suit every home. Eurocell is also the UK leader in PVCu sustainability, and has recently invested £3m in a new recycling plant. Right Price is looking forward to working alongside the profile provider to develop products, whilst supporting the drive for an affordable zerocarbon future.

Right Price is also excited to be launching fantastic new Eurocell products this month. The first is the highly anticipated Modus the UK’s first fully integrated window and door system. Modus features a clean and contemporary look, together with slimmer sight lines and leading thermal performance, to offer a fantastic alternative to aluminium and timber products at considerably better value.

“We are passionate about increasing employment and helping Plymouth’s economy” The second launch is the Aspect Bi-Fold door, with it’s modern, sleek elegance, creating an opening up-to six metres wide, with a low threshold for easy access that makes a stunning difference to maximise light and space. The door is the first bi-fold of any material on the UK market to gain BBA certification,

brings security to the forefront by setting out standards for doors and windows in all new residences. Under the new standards, all new doors and windows should be made to a design that has been shown, by test, to meet the security requirements of PAS24. Right Price does so with their high security Yale locking systems, as standard for both new build and all residential properties.

and also Secured By Design status by the Association of Chief Police Officers. The Right Price team has also recently expanded to include two new expert fitters, as well professional Installation Manager to help achieve maximum quality control, and keep focus firmly on customer satisfaction at every stage of the job. “We are passionate about increasing employment and helping Plymouth’s economy” says former Royal Marine Travis. To stay ahead of competitors, in quality, innovation and value, Right Price have also recently invested £100,000 in new state-ofthe-art, fully automated machinery. Sarah explains that “We will be able to keep up with the ever increasing demand, offer highly competitive prices, fast turn-around, whilst keeping 100% accuracy, as well as developing future products.” Right Price are also pleased to announce they have recently achieved the status of ‘Approved Guardian Roof installer’. Guardian roofs are solid roofs used to replace existing conservatory roofs and keep in heat, providing a more cost-effective alternative to having an extension built. These are proving to be hugely popular in the area, with happy customers raving about the transformation it’s made to their home. Customers can also be sure that they are in the best hands possible, as the business adheres to the new Document Q - which is the latest addition to Building Regulations and

Along with high-security systems, Right Price uses Pilkington K glass - the market leader, allowing units to obtain optimal solar heat gain, thermal insulation and light transmission to provide the highest Window Energy Rating (WER) performance, reducing energy bills and the use of artificial lighting.

“We will be able to keep up with the ever increasing demand, offer highly competitive prices, fast turn-around, whilst keeping 100% accuracy, as well as developing future products” With big plans for this year, Right Price is looking to relocate to new larger premises this year to allow for further expansion, and also grow their team with new members to provide ongoing excellent customer service to a growing client base. With strong connections to the local community they also continue to maintain discounts for NHS workers, service personnel and OAPs. By looking at the continuous positive testimonials, it’s easy to see why homeowners and trades people are continuing to choose Right Price for their UPVC double glazed windows, doors, conservatories, guttering and more, and that Right Price is looking forward to a bright future in the South West for many more decades to come. Why Do We Eat Chocolate Eggs

at Easter?

W

e are familiar with the traditional story

of Easter, but how did eggs end up in the picture? Take a look at these egg-cellent facts as to why chocolate eggs are associated with Easter!

According to Cadbury, the UK chocolate Easter Egg market is worth in excess of £220 million, with sales growing more and more every year as the choice of chocolate eggs in shops expands with each addition of tempting new products. Through the ages, eggs have been viewed as important ancient symbols of new life and fertility. It is believed that, for this reason, many cultures including the Ancient

Egyptians, Persians, and Romans used eggs during their spring festivals. In medieval Europe, eggs were not allowed to be eaten during the week leading up to Easter so they were instead decorated and dyed with natural items such as onion peels, tree bark, flower petals and juices. Eggs were also often one of the first foods, blessed by a priest, eaten after the Lenten fast. This turned into eating the modern substitute of chocolate in the 19th Century when hollow egg-shaped chocolate first appeared in France and Germany. The UK’s first hollow chocolate egg was produced in 1873 by Fry’s of Bristol and has developed into today’s brightly foil-wrapped egg in a packaged decorative box, available in almost every shop from the beginning of March. The discovery of the modern chocolate making process and mass manufacturing meant that the moulded chocolate egg was the most popular gift for Easter, but it wasn’t until the 1960s that this was established world wide. They became popular very quickly and remain very popular today!
