Looking After Your Garden In Preparation For Winter The cold, harsh weather can take a toll on your garden that has thrived and blossomed in the summer months. Autumn is a great time to undertake essential preservation jobs and protect the more fragile plants. Take a look at the Oracle’s handy guide to preparing different areas of your garden to guard them from the upcoming winter months.

Protecting Soil

The winter season is a great time to build up your soil foundation. Plant a cover crop to provide ground cover. A mulch blanket will also prevent bare soil sprouting those pesky winter weeds and retain moisture, as it is a layer of insulating organic materials layered on top of the soil surface, acting as a protective cover before the harsh elements begin. In case of snowfall, do not worry as it can in fact be good for the garden, insulating and carrying nitrogen to the soil.

Composting

To make good quality garden compost, it is best to have the right mix of browns and greens. In your browns, add items such as autumn leaves, shredded newspaper, bark, vacuum cleaner contents and even hair.

in Devon, such as exposed coastal gardens subject to strong winds that thrive in challenging conditions, include dragonfly, blue barlow, cuprea and primrose. Some autumn-flowering bulbs and winter bedding plants that are also able to brave the winter months include dahlia, begonia, snowdrop, crocus, wallflower, pansies and violas.

Vegetable Gardens

Most vegetable gardens and patches can house winter crops. The ground is warm enough in September for seeds to germinate quickly, so this is a great time for late autumn sowings. Some examples of crops to try are Christmas potatoes, rocket, mustard, leafy vegetables, garlic and broad beans and peas. Keep plants well-watered, hoe between rows regularly to keep them free of weeds and cover the salads and leafy plants with cloches for protection from the frost.

In your greens, throw in fruit and vegetable waste, eggshells, teabags and coffee grounds. Be careful never to include items that will produce bad odours and toxins such as meat, fish, dairy products, fat, the waste of cats or dogs, or weeds with seeds. Grass clippings can also be put in your compost if you have not sprayed chemicals on your lawn beforehand.

Fruits

Tender Plants

Remember to apply a fresh layer of mulch - around 2 inches thick - to lock in soil moisture. Trees including olives and lemons must be lifted into a greenhouse, and wrap hardier specimens in insulating material.

Some tender plants simply need a thick layer of mulch added between September and November. The mulch doesn’t protect plants from the cold, but in fact keeps roots cold and protects exposed soil from freezing and thawing. Avoid fertilising tender plants any later than mid-august and water carefully, as plants growing in soggy areas struggle in the cold winter, and ensure they are planted in a sheltered spot or in pots so they can be moved inside for worry-free winter protection. Tender perennials such as canna, gladioli and caladiums will have to be stored inside at the first sign of frost. Take precaution to minimise frost damage by protecting them from the morning sun and feeding with a balanced fertiliser.

Hardy Plants

Cold-hardy perennials such as peonies, coneflowers, iris and catmint are tough enough to withstand freezing conditions. Before winter, trim back dead foliage or stems and surround with a few inches of mulch and water during prolonged dry winter periods to prevent root damage. Plants suitable for wintery conditions

8

Raspberries are a suitable plant that can be planted over the winter period, ensuring the soil is not frozen or drowned. Use winter as an ideal time to remove weeds from the base of fruit trees to eliminate hidden pests, remove rotting fruit from branches to prevent infection of the other fruits, and replace rotten stakes or tree ties.

One problem of the fruit garden in winter is the possibility of overwintering pests that pop up during summer. A treatment to combat these insects is by spraying a winter tree wash or using a glue band to stop egg-carrying moths climbing into the tree’s branches.

Wildlife

Don’t forget about the wildlife this winter! Before turning your compost heap, check for frogs, toads and other small animals. If you have a garden pond that has frozen over do remember to make a hole in the ice for any fish and frogs, or toxic gases may build up and harm the animals. Place a small saucepan filled with boiling water on the ice sheet to create a hole and release the gas. During the cold season, birds may also find it difficult to find berries, insects and seeds, so any extra food put out will help vulnerable animals survive the cold.

Why We Need Plymouth’s Airport There has been talk for a number of years that Plymouth’s current connectivity links are poor. We sometimes feel as though we are out of reach from other cities in the UK. However the airport re-opening project, developed by Fly Plymouth, could restablish the connection that is vital for our city... By Jess Morcom

campaign and it is limited by guarantee. This means that all profits generated by the business are sure to be recycled into the airport, rather than being extracted by private shareholders. People can donate as much or as little as they like, with higher donations receiving a limited edition certificate of sponsorship.

The fundraising project aims to raise over £150,000 over the course of two years in order to work on the goal to reopen Plymouth Airport so that Plymouth can benefit from major connectivity improvement.

When we look at the current extortionate prices of train tickets and the cost of fuel to travel the UK, it is easy to see the pros outweighing the cons if the airport were to reopen; not to mention the hours of travelling time. The quickest way to central London remains to be a journey over three hours long.

All the funding received from the community project will be invested into the pre-revenue work to make the plan to reopen the airport become a reality. FlyPlymouth are only seeking a short operating lease initially, allowing it to be re-commissioned which will make the airport profitable. Once this stage has been reached, FlyPlymouth promise to create a new base airline, travelling to destinations that have been selected based on current passenger demand modelling. These include London, Manchester, Glasgow and Exeter and the aim is for services to run twice a day. When the old Plymouth airport was up and running, in 2009, 157,933 passengers were reported to have passed through. This is contrary to public belief that the airport was not used when it was up and running. However, London flights were withdrawn in early 2011 seeing a major fall in passenger numbers which eventually led to the airport closure in July of the same year. By reintroducing links to London and other capital cities, there is no doubt potential for Plymouth’s airport to attract more business than ever before. FlyPlymouth is a locally owned company behind the 12

There is no doubt that investing in reopening the airport would be a fantastic idea; the city will reap the benefits of reopening Plymouth’s City Airport. As well as improving connectivity with the rest of the UK, it will create jobs for workers, in turn benefitting the economy. FlyPlymouth’s estimations are to have the airport up and running within 3 years time, which is fairly reasonable and certainly can happen with the support and donations of Plymouth citizens. The project also believes that the airport can profitably function on the current site, meaning that there is no need for any adjustments to be made, utilising the land that already exists. At the beginning of May 2015, Plymouth Herald revealed that the airport plans were announced at a post-general election public meeting. During this meeting, FlyPlymouth’s chief executive stated that “It is now time for Plymouth to focus on reopening its airport and connecting with the world”. Visit FlyPlymouth’s website to make a pledge today and to read extra details on the campaign. www.crowdfunder.co.uk/flyplymouthairportreopening-project/

Thai Pumpkin Soup Ingredients

• 1½ kg pumpkin or squash, peeled and roughly chopped • 4 tsp sunflower oil • 1 onion, sliced • 1 tbsp grated ginger • 1 lemongrass, bashed a little • 3-4 tbsp Thai red curry paste • 400ml can coconut milk • 850ml vegetable stock • Lime juice and sugar, for seasoning • 1 red chilli, sliced, to serve (optional)

Method 1.

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Toss the pumpkin or squash in a roasting tin with half the oil and seasoning, then roast for 30 mins until golden and tender.

2.

Recipe: bbcgoodfood.com Image: www.cleanfoodcrush.com

Meanwhile, put the remaining oil in a pan with the onion, ginger and lemongrass. Gently cook for 8-10 mins until softened. Stir in the curry paste for 1 min, followed by the roasted pumpkin, all but 3 tbsp of the coconut milk and the stock. Bring to a simmer, cook for 5 mins, then fish out the lemongrass. Cool for a few mins, then whizz until smooth with a hand blender, or in a large blender in batches. Return to the pan to heat through, seasoning with salt, pepper, lime juice and sugar, if it needs it. Serve drizzled with the remaining coconut milk and scattered with chilli, if you like.

R

efurnish takes great pride in the work that they do. Their principle aims are to help people on low incomes by providing low cost reusable furniture at discounted prices and reducing the waste in your local community.

What is Refurnish? Refurnish is a Devon charity that collects unwanted furniture, electrical goods and other household items that are in a good, reusable condition and sells them to onto those that appreciate the environmental benefits of reusing household goods that may otherwise go to waste, or simply want to buy at affordable prices. We offer special discounts to pensioners and people who are in receipt of means tested benefits, but you don’t have to be on benefits to buy from our shops - our shops are open to all. All electrical items are functioning and safety tested. We currently only carry out minor repairs of furniture, although we hope to do more in the future. In addition to reducing waste and helping to alleviate poverty by providing low cost goods to people on low incomes, we provide volunteering, training and employment for people who may be unemployed or retired and may have a variety of support needs.

The Buckfastleigh Shop Refreshed

Donating to Refurnish We rely on the sale of donated stock to provide goods that we can sell at low prices, especially to those on low incomes. Donated items should be in clean and serviceable condition. The guiding question to ask yourself is “Would I want to buy this in a second-hand shop?”. If you browse the store’s pages you will see examples of the items we sell. At Refurnish we have many shops within the Devon area, including our new Wrangaton branch that has nearly 8,000 square feet of space containing a wide range of household goods. If you have any unwanted items you would like to donate or have any unwanted furniture you would like us to collect, please contact us or visit our website to find the nearest branch to you. If you want to help or get involved in any way: call David Banks on 01364 73206, email davidbanks@refurnish.org.uk, or visit our website www.refurnish.org.uk

Eat the season: Squash

The Riverford Field Kitchen

S

quash come in all shapes and sizes. Along with pumpkins, they are part of the Cucurbitaceae family, along with courgettes and marrows, but are distinguished by the fact that their fruits are harvested mature and can last very well, making them a useful staple through Autumn and Winter (and often beyond). Squash has been a staple for the Native Americans for more than 5,000 years. We sow our squash in small pots in late April for planting out in mid-May. They will not tolerate frost and we sometimes use crop covers to get them off to a good start. We grow a range of squash including sugar pumpkins, butternut, kabocha, and crown prince. They bruise easily so harvesting involves gently hand placing each one into straw-layered wooden crates. Unlike most veg (though technically they are a fruit), squash are happier in a snug kitchen than a fridge, so make the most of this by using them as a rustic decoration: perhaps piled together in a tumble of colour on a kitchen table, or cheerily dotted along a windowsill. Tasty and pretty – now that’s value for money! To prepare squash, knock off the stem and push a sharp knife into the centre. Work it around and split the squash in half. If the skin is too hard for a peeler, use a knife by placing the squash half face down on a board, working round with a knife and cutting the skin off. Make sure you never put a whole squash in the oven as it will explode. Cut it in half and de-seed first. The seeds and inside trimmings from squash can be added to homemade veg stock to add a vibrant colour. We offer a seasonal squash box which includes a 7kg assortment of different squash in an array of colours. Visit www.riverford.co.uk to find out more.

Have you ever tried eating in The Riverford Field Kitchen? We think great food tastes even better when you enjoy it with other people, so you will share your table with fellow diners for a feast of the freshest seasonal produce from our fields. Uniquely, there is just one sitting and the whole restaurant is served together at the same time. For lunch we start things off with a seasonal salad followed by creative vegetable side dishes and one meat dish served to the table for you to pass around and share. Portions are generous and there’ll be plenty to go round. When it comes to pudding, we’ll invite you up to the kitchen to choose from a wickedly tempting selection. Supper is a slightly more lavish affair with four vegetable anti-pasti dishes to start your evening. We are fully licensed and have a selection of organic wine, local juices, beers and cider, as well as some spirits. We are a family-friendly restaurant and children of all ages are very welcome. There is a toy box with children’s books, colouring sheets, baby changing facilities, highchairs and large lawn for kids to run around on. We don’t serve a children’s menu, they will share the same food as adults. Children aged 3-12yrs are half-price and infants under 3yrs are free of charge.

HALLOWEEN AROUND THE WORLD On Saturday the 31st of October children will roam the neighbourhoods of Devon dressed in their spookiest costumes - from ghouls to goblins, witches to vampires and werewolves to zombies - knocking from door-to-door, looking for tantalising treats to feast on and victims to trick if no treats are given to them. But how do other countries all over the globe celebrate Halloween? By Harriet McClure

T

he origins of Halloween come from ancient religious rituals, dating back to the ancient Celtic end-of-summer festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). 2,000 years ago, the Celts, who lived in the area that is now the UK, Ireland and Northern France, celebrated the New Year on November the 1st. They believed that at the end of the year, on the night of October the 31st, spirits came back from the dead to wander amongst the living. In the 9th century, the influence of Christianity had spread into the Celtic lands, and the Catholic Church eventually declared November the 2nd as All Soul’s Day – a day to honour the dead. It’s widely believed that the Catholic Church wished to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a church-sanctioned holiday, therefore the term All Soul’s Day eventually transformed into the name All Hallow’s Eve; and as we know it today, Halloween. Many UK and Ireland Halloween traditions, such as trick-or-treating, stem back as far as 1000 AD. Poor citizens would knock from door-to-door, begging for food in exchange for songs and prayers to commemorate passed loved ones. These citizens

34

were known as soulers because the food they received was known as a soul-cake: a small round cake with a cross marked on top which, when eaten, symbolised a soul being freed from Purgatory. Later in the 19th century, the tradition of souling was adapted into what is known as guising in which instead of offering a prayer, children would perform songs, recite poems, tell jokes, play instruments or play a trick in return for coins. The celebration of Halloween came to America at this point in history when millions of Irish folk fled the potato famine of 1846. Trick-or-treating specifically became popular in early 1940s America after the World War 2 sugar rations were lifted, following on from the movement to turn Halloween into a community-centred holiday in the 1800s. The tradition of trick-or-treating today is associated with dressing in a disguising costume. When the Celts believed spirits came back from the dead, they also thought that citizens would encounter ghosts if they left the safety of their homes. Therefore, upon venturing out into the cold of the night, people would wear masks so as to not be recognised by the ghosts.

Today, in the UK, Halloween is celebrated as the third biggest holiday after Christmas and New Years Eve. Traditional activites range from ghost walks, lighting bonfires, pumpkin carving, apple-bobbing and of course, trick-or-treating at night. Many countries around the globe traditionally celebrate the holiday of Halloween. In Mexico, Latin America and Spain, citizens celebrate the Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in which they honour the spirits of deceased loved ones who have returned from heaven to enjoy the festivities. Breads, candies and other foods are made into iconic shapes of skulls and skeletons. In Germany, Halloween has gained its popularity in the past decade ,as many of the older generation believe that Halloween is merely an Americanised, commercial holiday. However, one long-standing tradition is to hide knives so as to not risk harm to (or from) the returning spirits. Japan embraces Halloween as a Western-style tradition and hold themed events at their Disneyland and Universal Studios theme parks. Japanese Buddhists also honour the spirits of their ancestors

“ ”

The origins of Halloween date back to the ancient Celtic end-of-summer festival of Samhain in a tradition known as Bon Festival. In China, the Halloween festival is named Teng Chieh. Food and water are placed in front of family photographs of deceased loved ones. Bonfires and lanterns are also lit to guide their spirits safely back to earth. In Austria, for Seleenwochen (Alls Soul’s Week) it’s also tradtional to place bread, water and a lighted lamp on a bedside table before sleeping. This welcomes the dead souls back to earth. Austrian Catholics celebrate this period from October 30th to November 8th. Halloween is not typically a part of Australian culture, however is celebrated non-religiously as result of America’s pop-culture influence. Trick-or-treating is also rare in France as they do not traditionally celebrate the holiday; neither does the country of Russia. Sweden celebrates Halloween, known to them as Alla Helgons Dag, from the 31st of October to November the 6th. As with many other countries’ celebrations, the day becomes a shortened working day or vacation. Some countries follow similar practises and superstitions to those originating in the UK and Ireland. The Belgians believe it unlucky for a black cat to cross their path or enter their home. Other popular superstitions originating from the Celts say that if a member of the house sees a spider on All Hallows Eve, it is the soul of the deceased member of their family. Nuts, apples and candles are symbols of magic charms, and if the flame on a candle goes out, it means there is a spirit in the house. According to legend, walking three times backwards around your home will keep away those unwanted, evil spirits! Information sourced from www.history.com
