to 21 Partners and 110 legal professionals ensuring the continuation of outstanding clients service and trusted advise to companies and individuals across the South West.
Tony Hunt, Partner & Head of Family
When two well-established legal firms join forces, you get Kitson Boyce—a powerhouse with over 250 years of combined legal excellence. With an extensive team of Partners and legal professionals, coupled with the outstanding reputations of both firms, it creates an exciting new force in the legal world. We sat down with Tony Hunt, Partner and Head of Family at Kitson Boyce to discuss the recent merger and explore the new world of Kitson Boyce.
I
t was in 2022 when Kitsons and Boyce Hatton’s shared accountants, Francis Clark, set the wheels in motion by planting the seed of a discussion between the firms. As the conversation formed it became very clear that there was a shared belief that the two firms, deeply rooted in the South West and sharing similar cultures, could leverage their complementary strengths to offer an even broader spectrum of services to clients. Kitsons and Boyce Hatton officially merged on 1st October 2023 to become Kitson Boyce. Tony Hunt said: “Partners across both firms share the same vision and values and we are equally proud of the people, clients and culture we have nurtured and supported over the years.” At the core of the new firm’s identity lies an unwavering dedication to people, with both Kitsons and Boyce Hatton taking great pride in the calibre of employees, the excellence of their legal advice and their shared reputation for outstanding client service. Tony continued: “We prioritise our clients’ needs and build lasting relationships through empathy, trust and expertise. Our people-first approach enables us to understand and solve complex legal challenges, empowering clients to achieve their goals and find peace of mind.” Rhodri Davey, Managing Partner at Kitsons, serves as Managing Partner of the new firm and Kate Barton, Boyce Hatton’s Managing Partner have joined the leadership team. Partners from both Kitsons and Boyce Hatton sit on the Board, ensuring representation across the two firms on decision-making and strategic planning. The amalgamation has grown the firm
6
The firm has four offices; Torquay, which is their largest office, Plymouth, Exeter and Totnes. Tony comments: “The plan is to focus on growing our Totnes office. Matt Bryant, a Partner in Kitson Boyce’s Commercial Property team is championing the development, so watch this space!” In terms of expanding the office footprint, they are looking to continue to work, build and dominate in the areas the firm is currently in.
History Kitsons was established in 1826 in Torquay by William Kitson, a solicitor and banker, and as you may have guessed by the name, the founder of Kitsons. Members of the Kitson family continued to run the firm during the 19th century and the last of them was Charles William Kitson who retired in 1900. Over the next 100 years Kitsons merged with other local firms and expanded their presence in Newton Abbot in 1989 and opened their second office. In 2001, Kitsons and Hutchings & Plum merged to form Kitsons Hutchings, however, nine years later, the firm rebranded and become Kitsons LLP. Most recently in October 2023, Kitsons LLP and Boyce Hatton LLP’s announced a merger between the two companies to become Kitson Boyce LLP. In October this year, Kitson Boyce was recognised as one of the top law firms in the UK in The Times Best Law Firms 2024 Top 250 for its expertise in Insolvency and Restructuring across England and Wales. Andrew Pay, Partner and Head of Dispute Resolution and Insolvency at Kitson Boyce said: “I’m incredibly proud that our Insolvency and Restructuring team has been recognised in this prestigious list – it’s testament to our commitment to excellence and client service, and the fantastic work we do for our clients. This is a very exciting time for Kitson Boyce and I’m looking forward to seeing what the year ahead brings as we continue to grow and expand the team.” But Kitson Boyce’s accolades don’t just stop there, the firm was also recognised in The Legal 500, which is a prestigious independent legal guide that recommends and ranks law firms and lawyers based on positive

client and external feedback. Chambers & Partners UK also praised the firm for their outstanding work in Employment and Family law with Tony Hunt receiving a ‘Band 1’ ranking in Plymouth and the surrounding area for his experience in advising on complex financial remedy proceedings and private law children cases. Neither firm had any resistance to merging and bringing the teams together. With any new business, it could take a couple of years to train staff, build a client base and create a presence whereas the fusion between teams at Kitson Boyce has been immediate. Tony Hunt says; “the feel good and the excitement that comes with rebranding and a merger is really positive.” The mission statement is a simple one, they want to continue to grow and be the law firm of choice for clients and staff. The aim is to continue to be good at what they do, ensure staff enjoy coming to work and be proud of where they work. Working in this industry can require a lot from an individual so it’s important to keep staff moral high which comes from creating a good work environment and training. Kitson Boyce has a brilliant training program for aspiring lawyers which has been a focus since the merger. Offering good training ensures the firm attracts the right staff to increase the team and lean into the mission statement of becoming a bigger firm offering the services people need. Not only does Kitson Boyce help with regards to legal needs but staff at the firm actively get involved with raising money for charities in the region. In previous year’s they have taken on the National Three Peaks and last year around 40 team members tackled the Yorkshire Three Peaks to raise money for the children’s ward at Derriford Hospital. This December they’re heading down the Eden Project Zipwire dressed as none other than Santa himself, in aid of Plymouth Hospitals Charity. The plans have already begun with
what challenge they will undertake next year and which charity they will raise money for?
So what’s the future for Kitson Boyce? The plan is to complete the full integration and consolidation of the firm’s case management systems within the next six months and focus on the new identity of the firm. The next goal will be a focus on recruitment and looking at where the firm needs to expand its offering and services. There’s no plan to expand the office footprint in other areas at this stage, the plan is to focus on what they do and do it well in the areas of Torquay, Exeter, Plymouth and Totnes. To discover more about Kitson Boyce, the legal services they offer and to keep up to date with all their latest news and events, please visit: www.kitsonboyce.co.uk.

By Design … couple’s ‘showroom’ kitchen with the wow factor, thanks to KF Kitchens
I
f you thought it was impossible to recreate a showroom kitchen as a ‘real-life’ kitchen, then think again.
Because the kitchen that Plymouth family firm KF Kitchens have just designed, supplied, and installed for Colin Marshall and Jo Grove could easily swap places with the one the couple saw when they visited the showroom at Faraday Mill: “I think they could use this as a showroom!” said Colin. “I wanted a ‘wow’, and you get that when you see the kitchen lit up as you come up the driveway to the house. And then you get another ‘wow’ when you open the kitchen door and come into the room. “It was the first kitchen I saw when I went into KF Kitchens,” he added, “and I knew straight away that’s what I wanted. I was like a little boy in a sweet shop, I kept saying, ‘I want that, I want that’. And Jo felt exactly the same.” The kitchen is the latest part of Colin and Jo’s ongoing renovation of the house they bought in Plymstock two years ago. The house is “upside-down,” so the kitchen is upstairs in a new extension on one side of the house: “When KF Kitchens’ designer Nathan visited us, the room was all new, with fresh walls and lighting, but it was basically just an empty box,” said Colin. “At that stage, we knew what kitchen we wanted, but we didn’t know what should go where. “Initially, we thought we’d have the kitchen at the other end of the room, but Nathan said, ‘why would you not want the kitchen to be at the front of the room, where the sun comes in’? He worked out exactly what would work and where. He designed everything to fit in with how we wanted to use the space.” At the front of the new extension is a large balcony, which once finished is spacious enough to dine outside. It’s connected to the kitchen by full-length, four-pane sliding patio doors. Jo said: “As soon as Nathan came up with his design, it made complete sense. The kitchen is full of light, and the balcony is right next to where we prepare our meals, so it’s practical if we want to go outside.”
The kitchen is a Nolte German kitchen in Graphite Silver and Lava combination with 900mm base cupboards on 50mm plinths which offers 20% more storage space, and a Dekton worktop. The state-ofthe-art appliances are by Neff, including integrated microwave and plate warmer, a separate integrated oven with a slide and hide door, a fridge freezer and fridge. On the island, there’s a induction hob with an extractor, and the couple chose a Quooker boiling tap. Colin and Jo wanted the kitchen to be a living space, and the Nolte kitchen offers them just that, with open display shelves with practical hidden storage, including at the end of one of the cupboards which would otherwise be an end panel. Another nice touch is the wooden effect secondary worktop at one end of the island, which has concealed sockets for devices, creating a desk for work or leisure. Each end of the island has the stunning Dekton worktop rather than end boards, adding to the stylish look. The installation took one week, and Colin said: “From the moment everything was delivered on Day 1, to the end, it was a pleasure. Our installer, Kev, is brilliant. And because they give you a figure at the outset, you know exactly how much it will cost.” Working in the home improvements industry himself, Colin has seen many KF Kitchens projects before and knew they were the best firm for the job: “Like many people in the building trade, I could have fitted the kitchen myself, to a standard. But we’ve just bought a fantastic kitchen. We wanted something a little bit extra special. So, why wouldn’t I get the best professionals to do it? It’s definitely worth getting KF Kitchens to install it, even if you have the skills.” KF Kitchens is an ambitious, local, family business that is pushing the boundaries of what is possible in a kitchen. From the moment you walk through the door of their studio, everything becomes possible and available to you, to achieve your dream kitchen. How is this possible? For a quick look, check out their website (www.kfkitchens. co.uk), social media on Instagram (@kfkitchens) or Facebook. Book a consultation in their studio, either by email (enquiries@kfkitchens. co.uk) or phone (01752 255022), and make your first steps towards your dream kitchen today!

How the grinch stole christmas
Christmas Film
guide
Editors festive film guide old and new to get you into the spirit ...
Starring - Jim Carrey, Taylor Momsen, Jeffrey Tambor
I use quotes from the film pretty much on a daily basis, so it had to make it on the film guide this month! The Whos of Whoville are eagerly waiting for Christmas, filling the streets with festive cheer. However, just north, on top of Mount Crumpit lives The Grinch (Carrey), a furry, pear-shaped being with a vengeful hate towards Christmas. Will his plans to ruin the special day for all the citizens of Whoville? Where to watch: Netflix, Amazon Prime & Apple TV
the Polar Express
the holiday
Starring - Tom Hanks, Michael Jeter
Starring - Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Jack Black
Released in 2004, the magical adventure of the film and fantastic talent of Tom Hanks morphing into various characters truly encompasses the feeling of Christmas. Take a trip to the North Pole while learning about friendship, bravery, and the spirit of Christmas. As one of my favourites, this one is highly recommended.
A film that always makes me feel so full of love and hopeful for a snowy Christmas. Follow two women, needing some escape after relationship breakdowns and decide to swap homes for the Christmas holidays. Oh and they’re on the opposite side of the world to each other! Whilst on their holidays, they unexpectedly fall in love with two local men.

ELF
Starring - Zachary Levi, Marte Klerck-Nilssen, John F. Brungot
Starring - Will Ferrell, James Caan, Bob Newhart
The English dubbed film follows the journey of a Norwegian eight-year-old, Mariann, who finds an adorable teddy whilst visiting a Christmas market. After seeing the teddy move Mariann couldn’t think of anything better than winning him as the prize, but when someone gets there first, it’s up to Teddy to make his way back to Mariann.
Nothing says Christmas quite like Elf. Buddy (Ferrell), born human, is raised amongst elves at the North Pole. As he realises that he’s not an elf, he travels from the North Pole to New York City to find his biological father. However, Walter Hobbs (Caan), has no idea Buddy exists and isn’t the Christmas type, but lucky for him Buddy is full of Christmas spirit.

spirited
Starring - Chris Sarandon, Catherine O’Hara, William Hickey
Starring - Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, Octavia Spencer
Two great comedy actors coming together for a Christmas treat! The Ghost of Christmas Present (Ferrell), chooses one dark soul each year for the three spirits to visit. This year, he picked the wrong scrooge. Clint Briggs (Reynolds) turns the tables and has Present reexamining his own past, present and future.
A true Christmas come Halloween classic which is a real full circle moment as it’s my Nephew’s favourite film too. Jack Skellington, the pumpkin King finds himself growing tired of the same annual routine of scaring people in the ‘real world.’ After accidently finding Christmastown, he gets a new lease of life and plots to kidnap Santa Claus and taking his role.

gremlins
Starring - Eddie Murphy, Tracee Ellis Ross, Jillian Bell
Starring - Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton
Set after the fall of the Empire, the new series from Star Wars follows the former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy. With recognisable faces such as David Tennant and Hayden Christensen making an appearance, the eight-episode season will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Whilst the film was before my time, once I discovered it as I child it was a core favourite of mine and still is today. After receiving a very special gift with strict instructions how to take care of the ‘mogwai’, but as the boy ignores the rules, a gang of gremlins are born and reek havoc on the town on Christmas Eve.

edward scissorhands
Starring - Lil Rel Howery, Ludacris, Madison Skye Validum
Starring - Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest
A new Christmas film which was released on November 17th 2023. The films follows a divorced social worker who despises Christmas due to a painful childhood memory. When sent on a call while spending Christmas Eve with his daughter, he inadvertently evokes the wrath of a local politician but meets a man who helps him understand the joy and magic of Christmas.
I love Tim Burton films especially Edward Scissorhands. After moving in with Peg, a kindly Avon lady, after his inventor passed, he has to try and fit in with ‘normal’ life all whilst having scissor blades instead of hands. As feelings form for Peg’s daughter things take a turn for the worst when he is blamed for a crime he didn’t commit.

HOW TO MAKE...
a Christmas Faux Wreath
With Doris the Florist
www.qcflowers.co.uk City Business Park, Somerset Place, PL3 4BB DIY Kits are available with all materials included please contact 01752 424807
You will need • 15 small snow cones • 15 micro red sparkle cones • 15 small pine sprigs • 15 snow pine sprigs • 5 Lotus heads • 2 long stems of berry to cut • 2 long stems of gold foliage • 8 small poinsettia • Assorted baubles • 9 cinnamon sticks • Robin • 16 inch straw ring • Reel wire • Bullion wire • Floristry adhesive Glue • Snow spray • Glitter glue • Wired Ribbon • Floristry scissors
STEP 1
STEP 2
Select items you wish to add to your straw wreath for example I have used pine cones, glitter, snow spray, baubles, artificial pine stems, lotus heads, berries, foliage-coloured stems, cinnamon sticks, embellishment accessories, cold floral glue, bullion wire. These can be items you have picked up on walks, purchased from craft shops or any items you have around your home. Spray snow lightly on some of the pine cones and paint ends with glitter glue on the smallest cones.
Secure one end of the wreath with a wire loop to hang, twist ends and secure through wreath test to make sure secure you can also add an extra loop pin and pin in to the straw over the loop for added security. Note: you can also add ribbon to this loop afterwards if you wish to hang a longer ribbon on the front door wreath for added impact.
STEP 3 Thread the baubles through the top with two equal-length wires, ensuring there’s enough to tie around the wreath. Group small baubles or use a single large one. Tie the wire around the straw wreath, twist to secure, and pin into the straw, keeping the wreath behind the ornament. Apply cold glue on the straw, wait for it to get tacky, then position the ornament on top. Hold for a minute until it sets. Repeat for other ornaments and materials, placing them where desired on the wreath using the same method (just use glue for the less heavier materials).

Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk
Top Tips: • Hide a scented Christmas wax in to your wreath to make it smell authentic. • Use 12” rattan wreath rather than 16” straw wreath to save on materials • You can use a hot glue gun for speed, use with caution as it can cause injury
STEP 4 Lastly if you wish to add a bow you can either buy an already made bow or take a long piece of wired ribbon or velvet ribbon about 90cm for luxury and make in to a large bow. Wrap bullion wire around the centre piece of bow to pinch together the bow shape, add a long tail of bullion wire together twist at the back of the bow and push long wire ends around the straw wreath carefully and secure at the back and push through the straw wreath.

DIY FESTIVE DECORATIONS
Coconut Wax Candles
80% full, let cool to semi-solid, centre the wick and complete final pour. This is when you can add your festive decorations with a pair of tweezers and gentle place them into the candle.
Step 3: The wax will begin hardening right away,
so do not move or adjust your candle until it has set solid. Leave to sit for at least three hours before moving. I find it best to trim the wick 5 to 6 hours later to avoid the wick disturbing the top of the candle. Trim the wick, using sharp scissors. Generally, you should trim the wick 1 - 1.5cm above the level of your wax. Make sure you allow 3 days for the candle fragrances to cure before burning. Otherwise, the full spectrum of fragrance notes will not be appreciated. Method from New Zealand Candle Supplies.
You will need: • A Clean Pot • Fragrance oils • Coconut candle wax • Festive decorations such as sprigs, orange, cinnamon sticks • Candle wicks & Wick holders • Clean heat proof jars
• Double sided tape or wick stickums • A butter knife • Sharp scissors • Long spout pouring jug • Thermometer • Isopropyl alcohol for the clean-up
Stick the wicks to the bottom of the jar, make sure they are centered. A very small amount of doublesided tape works well. Ensure the tape is not larger than the wick as this may cause a fire risk. Press down with a butter knife to ensure good adhesion.
Step 1: Melt the wax slowly at a low heat, stir to
help it melt. Heat range of 65° - 70° degrees Celsius. Set up your making area, lay down clean newspaper to catch any spills. Ensure all jars are ready with centered wicks, placed on top of the paper. When the wax has melted, test with a thermometer to make sure wax is between 48° - 52° degrees Celsius and add your fragrance. If the wax is too hot it will burn off the fragrance, leaving you with a subtle scent, rather than a candle with an amazing scent throw. Add fragrance oils, between 8-10% of total wax weight or essential oils, I recommend 5% for essential oils. Mix well to ensure fragrance goes through all the wax.
Step 2: Test with a thermometer to make sure wax is between 40° - 46° degrees Celsius and carefully pour the melted coconut wax into your jar. Pour the jar 24
Star Wall Hanging You will need: • Small branch • Rolling pin • X-acto knife, or small paring knife • Scissors • Stars template, or small star cookie cutter Step 1: On a layer of wax paper, roll clay 1/8” to 1/4” thick. Cut out the star templates, lay them on the clay, printed side up, then cut around the stars with a knife. Remove excess clay. Repeat until you’ve cut out at least 20 stars. • Air-dry clay • Yarn or twine • Fishing line or clear sewing thread • Wax paper • Toothpick
Step 2: Carefully remove the clay stars from the wax paper, and poke a hole for hanging with a toothpick. Set the stars aside to dry on a piece of wax paper. Drying time will be at least 24 hours. Step 3: After the stars have dried, tie lengths of thread or string to them. Tie a piece of yarn or twine to either end of the branch to hang it up, then tie the stars to it at varying heights. Adjust the thread lengths, and trim excess thread. Hang up your new decoration, and enjoy the Christmas holidays! Method by DIY in PDX

www.treesurgeryplymouth.co.uk EXPERT DISPUTE RESOLUTION THROUGH MEDIATION Introducing Dispute Resolution at Howard & Over At Howard & Over, we have an expert litigation team dedicated to helping you resolve your dispute in the best way possible; quickly and cost effectively. Where possible, we will always aim to avoid the costly and timeintensive route of traditional litigation through the court system, settling through mediation wherever possible. Mediation is a process that involves an impartial mediator who will assist with communication between the two parties to ultimately achieve a settlement or resolution. Firstly, an independent mediator will be appointed by both sides. Then, as there is no need for a judge or court there is typically no need to give evidence, and the mediation can therefore be set up quickly and more often than not, settled within a day or less either in person or via video call.

Festive RECIPES
It’s officially Christmas season so it’s time to give into the festive spirit with some wholesome recipes.
Easy Christmas Turkey Serves - 6 Ingredients • 100g butter, softened • 3 rosemary sprigs, leaves picked and finely chopped • 1 turkey (around 4kg, but not more), giblets removed • 1 garlic bulb • 1 lemon, halved • 2 bay leaves • 2 large banana shallots, unpeeled, cut in half lengthways • 250ml white wine • 1 red cabbage (about 900g), cut into 6 wedges • 500ml good-quality chicken stock • 1 tsp cornflour (optional)
3
2
Set aside the turkey on a board to rest for 1 hr, transferring the garlic and bay to the roasting tin for the gravy. If you want crispy skin, don’t cover the turkey. Wrap the cabbage wedges in two parcels of foil, with a spoonful of the turkey juices, season liberally and return to the bottom of the oven to carry on cooking while the turkey rests.
4 28
1
Take your turkey out of the fridge at least 1 hr before you cook it. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/ gas 6 and beat the butter with the rosemary. Starting from the neck of the turkey, carefully push your fingers underneath the skin until you can get your whole hand between the skin and the breast meat. Trying not to tear the skin as you go, spread the butter inside the pocket, squishing some into the crevice between the thigh and breast meat. Put the garlic, lemon and bay leaves inside the turkey, then season liberally all over. Put the shallots in your largest flameproof roasting tin and put the turkey on top, breast-side up. Roast for 1 hr, then give it a good baste, pour in the wine and nestle the cabbage wedges in the tin (or underneath the turkey if they won’t fit). Return to the oven for another 30 mins – covered with foil if the turkey is looking too brown. The juices should run clear when you pierce the thickest part of the thigh, or a thermometer should read 75C. If not done, carry on cooking for a further 5-10 mins.
Spoon away most of the turkey fat, then put the tin on the hob over a medium heat. Mash the veg with the back of a wooden spoon to extract as much flavour as possible , then pour in the stock and reduce the gravy by half. If you want to thicken it, stir in the cornflour mixed with 1 tbsp water. Once happy with the consistency, strain and keep warm until ready to eat.

Truffle & Parmesan roast potatoes Serves - 6 - 8 Ingredients • 1½ kg Maris Piper or King Edward potatoes, peeled and cut chunks • 2 tbsp plain flour • 200ml vegetable oil • 50g grated parmesan • truffle oil, to taste
1
2
Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and cook the potatoes for 6-8 mins until the outsides are starting to soften. Drain well, then leave to steam-dry for a few minutes. Will keep covered and chilled for up to two days. Return the potatoes to the pan, add the flour, put the lid on and shake well to coat the potatoes and fluff them up. Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Pour the oil into a deep roasting tin and put in the oven to heat for 5 mins. Take out of the oven and carefully spoon the potatoes into the hot oil, then baste in the oil so they’re well coated. Spread them out to a single layer and put in the oven to roast for 20 mins. Turn and baste again, roast for another 20 mins, then repeat and roast for a final 15-20 mins or until golden and crisp. Scatter over all but a couple of tablespoonfuls of the parmesan, then put back in the oven for 2 mins so the cheese melts.
3
Remove the potatoes from the tin, leaving as much oil behind as possible, and pile onto a platter or on a serving dish. Scatter over the remaining parmesan, give the platter or bowl a shake, then drizzle over a little truffle oil (we used ½ tsp, but use as much as you like).
Black Forest Christmas Cups Serves - 6 Ingredients • 500ml double cream • ½ tsp vanilla extract • 2 tbsp icing sugar • 250g Christmas cake or rich fruitcake • 390g jar of black cherries in kirsch, drained, reserving the liquid for drizzling • 50g dark chocolate, chopped
1 Image by BBC Good Food
Whisk the cream with the vanilla and icing sugar until it just holds its shape. Crumble the cake into six glasses, then top with a few cherries, a dollop of cream and a drizzle of the kirsch. Scatter over the chopped chocolate.
