DIAL A CAB
33-33-33
Onward and Upward for New Local Taxi Comapany Merger!
In July 2015, Plymcabs joined forces with one of the largest operators in Plymouth, Crownhill Taxi Services Ltd. Crownhill Taxis established itself in the 1950s and has been operated by Andy Wheeler and family since 1994 under the name Dial A Cab 33-33-33. The reason behind this merger was due to the overall running costs in sustaining a small local office with minimal driver coverage. The group now boasts over 106 drivers, giving the firm the man power it needed while still maintaining strong local client values. New owner Andy Wheeler said “It’s been one of the best businesses decisions I’ve ever made. The company is growing stronger every day, we have still kept the existing management team and we have still kept the same client values that Plymcabs have always been known for.” The company is one of the largest suppliers of contract work to Plymouth City Council and all the drivers have enhanced DBS checks. In addition to

this, the company also operates a fleet of executive hire Mercedes and executive people carriers for airport runs or special occasions, as well as specialists disabled vehicles. Previous owner of Plymcabs Cliff said “I’m very pleased with this merger. The company can now move forward and upward as I’ve always wanted it to, including the ability to now be able to take Debit and Credit card payments in all the cars. The company is still locally focused with the back up and support of a larger fleet”. Despite certain rumours, Plymcabs categorically state that the number 77-77-77 will not be ceasing operations and will still continue to be the main number to call for any booking along with the additional Dial A Cab number of 33-33-33.

PLYMPTON BASED MANUFACTURER
EXPANDS FOR 2016
R
ight Price PVCu, based in Plympton’s Newnham Industrial Estate, has kicked off to a booming start in 2016. Since OM last spoke to Sarah and Travis back in September, the business has grown bigger and better and they tell us their exciting plans for the near future. Building on the well-known Right Price name, which has been built up over nearly three decades, Sarah and Travis are now entering their 4th year of ownership, developing the firm to one of the South West’s leading manufacturers & installers of windows and doors & conservatories. This year will see Right Price moving over to manufacturing their products with Eurocell profile; the market leader for energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, security and style. The move will enable Right Price to offer their customers even more choice, with greater colour options, and window and door styles to suit every home. Eurocell is also the UK leader in PVCu sustainability, and has recently invested £3m in a new recycling plant. Right Price is looking forward to working alongside the profile provider to develop products, whilst supporting the drive for an affordable zerocarbon future.
Right Price is also excited to be launching fantastic new Eurocell products this month. The first is the highly anticipated Modus the UK’s first fully integrated window and door system. Modus features a clean and contemporary look, together with slimmer sight lines and leading thermal performance, to offer a fantastic alternative to aluminium and timber products at considerably better value.
“We are passionate about increasing employment and helping Plymouth’s economy” The second launch is the Aspect Bi-Fold door, with it’s modern, sleek elegance, creating an opening up-to six metres wide, with a low threshold for easy access that makes a stunning difference to maximise light and space. The door is the first bi-fold of any material on the UK market to gain BBA certification,

brings security to the forefront by setting out standards for doors and windows in all new residences. Under the new standards, all new doors and windows should be made to a design that has been shown, by test, to meet the security requirements of PAS24. Right Price does so with their high security Yale locking systems, as standard for both new build and all residential properties.
and also Secured By Design status by the Association of Chief Police Officers. The Right Price team has also recently expanded to include two new expert fitters, as well professional Installation Manager to help achieve maximum quality control, and keep focus firmly on customer satisfaction at every stage of the job. “We are passionate about increasing employment and helping Plymouth’s economy” says former Royal Marine Travis. To stay ahead of competitors, in quality, innovation and value, Right Price have also recently invested £100,000 in new state-ofthe-art, fully automated machinery. Sarah explains that “We will be able to keep up with the ever increasing demand, offer highly competitive prices, fast turn-around, whilst keeping 100% accuracy, as well as developing future products.” Right Price are also pleased to announce they have recently achieved the status of ‘Approved Guardian Roof installer’. Guardian roofs are solid roofs used to replace existing conservatory roofs and keep in heat, providing a more cost-effective alternative to having an extension built. These are proving to be hugely popular in the area, with happy customers raving about the transformation it’s made to their home. Customers can also be sure that they are in the best hands possible, as the business adheres to the new Document Q - which is the latest addition to Building Regulations and
Along with high-security systems, Right Price uses Pilkington K glass - the market leader, allowing units to obtain optimal solar heat gain, thermal insulation and light transmission to provide the highest Window Energy Rating (WER) performance, reducing energy bills and the use of artificial lighting.
“We will be able to keep up with the ever increasing demand, offer highly competitive prices, fast turn-around, whilst keeping 100% accuracy, as well as developing future products” With big plans for this year, Right Price is looking to relocate to new larger premises this year to allow for further expansion, and also grow their team with new members to provide ongoing excellent customer service to a growing client base. With strong connections to the local community they also continue to maintain discounts for NHS workers, service personnel and OAPs. By looking at the continuous positive testimonials, it’s easy to see why homeowners and trades people are continuing to choose Right Price for their UPVC double glazed windows, doors, conservatories, guttering and more, and that Right Price is looking forward to a bright future in the South West for many more decades to come. etermination, drive and enthusiasm would be three words OM would use to perfectly capture of the essence of Karl Welburn, Managing Director of Print, Copy, Scan.
PCS is a Plymouth based company, which, as the name suggests supplies printers, copiers and scanners to hundreds of clients throughout Devon and Cornwall. The firm will shortly celebrate its sixth birthday and its rise has been down to a lot of hard graft by its team of 12. “My family have always been grafters,” explains 37 year old Karl. “If you work hard then you will do well. If you’ve given it 100% then you will be fine. The team at PCS give it 110%.” His Gran would always tell him that it didn’t matter if he ended up stacking shelves as long as he put 100% effort into doing it. It’s a sentiment which has stood British industry in good stead for years. As Sir Henry Royce, one of the founders of Rolls-Royce once reportedly said, “Whatever is rightly done, however humble, is noble.” With its hard work “can do” attitude, PCS achieved a turnover of just over £1 million last year. An amazing feat by anyone’s standards, but, even more so, when you realise that, back when it started, in March 2010, Karl was pulling shifts as a pizza delivery driver just to make ends meet.
With a wife and a baby to support then it was a case of knocking on doors, delivering leaflets and remaining confident that business would grow. And grow it did. Today it has around 360 clients and it is continuing to expand towards the 500 mark. “Failure isn’t even something to consider. You do not go into something to fail. Sometimes things don’t work but if they don’t then you tweak it and try to do it again as it may be that the idea was good but the implementation could be altered to make it successful.” It’s a sentiment which is echoed in the early part of Karl’s life. At the age of eight, he saw his cousin at a “passing out” parade for the Royal Navy. It became his dream to join up and to serve but, during training, he discovered that it wasn’t quite for him; therefore, he left. His Dad struck an immediate deal with him: Karl had two weeks to find a job or go to work with him, on a boat, as a fisherman. A suit was duly purchased from Burton’s and the clock started ticking. That early streak of entrepreneurial determination quickly kicked in and Karl knocked on hundreds of doors in the space of a few days before being offered two jobs: one as a car mechanic and the other as a fixer of photocopiers. His future boss summed up his options with a simple choice: “You can be a car mechanic anytime but when will you next have a chance to fix copiers?” And so the seed was sown. Karl started work within a couple of days and his boss would provide a tank of petrol for him, every week, to help top up his wages. That was back in 1995 and, at the age of 18, he had a company car, a phone card (to call the office from phone boxes having been paged on a bleeper) and a van full of service manuals. Gone today are the bleepers and the need to carry around manuals as laptops and mobile phones provide instant access to the internet for information. A lot of things may have changed over the past 21 years but the crux of providing a quality service for
16

the client has always remained at the top of Karl’s list of priorities and is still his number one aim. “One of our clients, an hotelier, found their copier had broken at Christmas and so I went to fix it on Boxing Day.” “I even took the family along with me as it’s important to always put the customer first – plus it gave time for the daughter and me to have a walk on the nearby beach. It certainly made Christmas different and fun!” When away from the office, family is a key focus for Karl. That all important work life balance sees him cycling, taking caravan holidays with his family (an important memory from his childhood) and even indulging in making cupcakes. “There’s more to life than just work,” says Karl. “The key is achieving the right balance, otherwise you get tired and your brain doesn’t work in the same way which then clouds your judgement.” Karl and the teams’ judgement remains razor sharp with the company doubling its size in a space of 18 months with its total responsibility growing to cover some 600 machines over Devon and Cornwall. The success comes from nurturing clients. He has a desire to look after the small client to help them grow, and so he embraces their entrepreneurial spirit.
100% trustworthy and who are also dedicated to the business. He met one of his account managers, George, when delivering pizzas and Karl’s sister answers phones in the office. “It’s all about having the right people in the right place at the right time. It’s not one person who makes the business but the team that you put together. It’s down to the trust which we share between ourselves, without each other then we would not have a business. Team work really is the key to success.” “If you can’t do something, then go out and work with someone who can. I believe that’s why we have been doing well. After all, if we were all good at doing everything then it would be a boring world!” Listening to Karl, OM is finding much of what he says to be inspirational. Printing may be a far cry from dreams of the Royal Navy or the possibility of working on his Dad’s boat but it’s clear that his decision to opt for printers over mechanics was a winner. Towards the end of the interview, Karl provides a number of snippets which really do give a good snapshot into what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur. A lot of it is down to having that all important positive mental attitude towards life.
The result has been expansion for PCS and there’s also a lot for the team to plan towards this year as they move into new premises in Estover - which is purpose built for their equipment needs.
“If you only put in 50% then you won’t enjoy it but it can be enjoyable if you put in 100% then you make it what you want it to be. I think I have quite a laid back attitude and see everything as an opportunity so I guess my glass isn’t just half full, it’s, well, three quarters full.”
Supporting local firms as they grow is a key part of Karl’s philosophy and its success means having the right team in place – a group of people who are

The Message of Saint Valentine St. Valentine’s Day seems to be focussed evermore each year on couples expressing their love for each other. Old legends, however, tell us that this may not always have been the case...
A
ccording to research, approximately 150 million people exchange Valentine’s Day cards annually (Source: History.com). The tradition is believed to have originated from a mysterious Roman - Saint Valentine - and there are many legends that depict who this mystery man may have been. As we know it today, St. Valentine’s Day traces back to both Christian and ancient Roman traditions. Archives show that several different martyrs were named Saint Valentine, or Valentinus, yet several historians also trace the origin of the day back to pagan times in the ancient Roman Empire. One legend speaks of the Roman priest Valentine secretly arranging marriages of young men and women, defying Emperor Claudius II’s strict policies. When his defiance was discovered by none other than the Emperor himself, he was sentenced to death on February 14th 270 AD, named as a Saint after his death for his martyrdom and dedication to love. Another legend states that Valentine was an early Christian in Rome. During this time, the Roman regime disfavoured
22
Christianity, yet Valentine continued to practise his faith. This enraged the Emperor, and Valentine was thrown into prison. The legend says that during Valentine’s imprisonment, he was missed greatly by the children of Rome. They left loving notes and flowers between the bars of his cell: a possible explanation of today’s tradition of exchanging gifts. Others also believe that during his imprisonment, Valentine became friends with the jailer’s daughter. Before his execution on February 14th, it is said that he wrote a farewell note to her and signed it “From Your Valentine”, an expression that is still popular amongst secret admirers to date. So, what is the real message of St Valentine’s Day? The message is that the day doesn’t have to be about romance or desire as we’ve explored in the original legends. Whether you’re happily single or happily take, use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to let anyone - a friend, family member or a partner - know that you love and cherish them!

Burglary - Protect Yourself The Plympton Neighbourhood Police Team offer advice on how to stop making your home a target for burglars. Research suggests that people that commit burglary will look to establish if there is: ● Anybody at home ● CCTV covering the area or property ● A security alarm system fitted ● An easy way in; would they be seen when trying to get in? In most cases, the thieves do not even have to use force. Perpetrators get in through an open door or window. Below are some practical tips to help you protect your home. When you go out: - Leave your lights on as if you were at home. Use timers or other devices if appropriate - Leave the television or radio on. There are devices available that can create such effects - Leave the curtains or blinds closed - Leave a car on the drive, or offer the space to a neighbour or friend to use in your absence CCTV covering the area or property: - If you decide to install CCTV it is worth spending a little extra and getting a decent system that will record images that are of the required quality, so that they can be used by police to identify offenders if a crime occurs - Outdoor sensor lighting can assist in getting decent images in hours of darkness A security alarm system fitted: - If you decide to have an alarm there are many systems to consider. It is always worth getting several quotes before parting with any money as well as specialist advice 26
- If you have a system already fitted, check that it is still operational, effective and still meets your original criteria for the installation. Alarm systems require servicing and reviewing to ensure they continue to be ‘fit for your purpose’ Look at your home through a burglar’s eyes: - Windows: thieves will gain access through an unlocked door or open window. Make sure doors and windows are locked - particularly when leaving the house - Keys: never leave spare keys outside in a convenient hiding place such as under the doormat or in a flowerpot - a thief will look there first. - Doors: if your doors are not fully secure, neither is your home. Thieves are most likely to target doors when attempting to break in. Check the condition of the frames, hinges and glass panels, and ensure to fix locks to all easily accessible windows. Watch Schemes: - If you see anyone acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood, call the police. Join your local Watch Scheme (see what they’re doing and how you can contribute) or if there isn’t one - consider setting one up. More details available if you email the Devon and Cornwall Community Watch Association: DaCCWA@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk

Beat the ‘February Blues’ We are no strangers to the most common New Year’s resolutions that are, more often that not, broken when January ends. One that springs to mind is the resolution to ‘be happier’. It may be hard to stick to this, especially when fighting the New Year blues; and for some of us, the blues don’t just disappear when January is over...
T
elling yourself to be happier is positive, however as it’s hard to set a definite starting point, it may become harder and harder to commit to as the months go on. It’s all too easy to promise yourself “I’ll start making a difference tomorrow”. Then we reach the end of the year, and you realise that tomorrow never came. A promise to yourself to be a happier person is a particularly tough one to implement, especially when you may have had to fight through a spell of the dreaded post-January blues. The most successful way of pushing through is to break it down into smaller steps as part of a checklist that can be physically ticked off once achieved. Tick off each of the following ideas and see them as little lights to light up the pathway towards your happier end goal.
Start With Small Steps Rather than vowing to visit a gym every day of the week which will make you happier in the long run, start doing little things such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator once a day, then progress to two times a day, then three etc. Or, vow to take a 5 minute walk to your local corner shop instead of driving.
Turn Off the Screen It is no secret that prolonged use of a
computer or mobile phone screen is damaging to our eyesight, our brain functionality, our posture and our overall happiess. It is recommended that in a computer-based workplace, you take a break from looking at the screen every two hours. During the lunch hour, sit away from your screen and perhaps chat to a colleague, read a book or a magazine.
Reconnect With an Old Friend or Family Member The best cure, if you’re feeling a little down or lonely, is to connect with an old friend or family member. If you haven’t seen them for a while, they will greatly appreciate anything as little as a 15 minute chat over the phone up to arranging an evening out.
Do One Good Deed Every Day Helping another person or even watching someone else do a good deed releases similar endorphins to those released when eating chocolate! The deed does not need to be anything extravagent or timeconsuming; some small ideas include picking up lunch for a homeless person, helping with your neighbours shopping, complimenting a stranger, leaving change in a vending machine or offering to pay the next person in lines’ coffee.
Stop Procrastinating It’s very easy to put off that niggling task, only to forget about it until it becomes a matter of urgency. Perhaps it’s an overdue payment, a work assignment or simply putting a wash on. Any task, no matter how small it may seem can be as daunting as the next, however you will feel ten times better with yourself if you complete it as
soon as it is brought to light.
Step Out of Your Comfort Zone There are many services that can help you overcome a phobia. It is not easy, and it can be a long and tough process. Didn’t set it as your resolution? Start now so you can begin to lift years of weight off your shoulders. Afraid of heights? Tell yourself, “in one year from now, I will take part in a tandem skydive”. Afraid of dogs? Commit to visit a rescue centre in 6 months time. The act of writing down exactly what you want to achieve, and when, will greatly speed up your journey on the way to happiness.
Follow the 4-7-8 Rule Each Day Simply inhale through your nose for a count of 4, hold your breath for a count of 7, then exhale completely through your mouth to a count of 8. This rule is a breathing pattern scientifically proven to relieve high levels of stress, deeply relax you and help you get to sleep much, much easier!

Wheatberries and purple sprouting broccoli with crispy garlic and chilli Ingredients • • • • • •
Serves 2
100g purple sprouting broccoli, trimmed if necessary 100g wheatberries or couscous 4tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil 1 fresh red chilli, very finely sliced handful of crispy fried onions (optional) salt and black pepper
Method
1. Boil the purple sprouting broccoli for 3-4 minutes, until just
tender. Remove with a slotted spoon and plunge into very cold water before draining. Add the wheatberries to the same water and cook for 25 minutes, or until cooked but still chewy. Drain in a colander.
2. Wipe out the pan and heat the oil in a frying pan on a
medium heat. Add the chilli and garlic and fry, stirring, until the garlic has turned golden.
3. Add the broccoli and fry for a couple more minutes, then add
the drained wheatberries and a handful of crispy fried onions, if using. Mix everything together, check the seasoning and add a dash more onion oil if it seems dry. Serve warm.

Changes to Red Tape surrounding Solvent Liquidations With changes shortly being made to taxes on capital dividends, Lisa Thomas, an Insolvency Practitioner from Plymouth Based Neville & Co, considers how the new legislation will affect Shareholders.
T
here is such a thing as a solvent Liquidation, called a Members Voluntary Liquidation (“MVL”).
It applies to Shareholders sat on reasonable bank balance in their Company who want to get their money out in the most tax efficient way.
are causing a stir A new targeted anti-avoidance rule (“TAAR”) is being introduced from 6th April 2016 to prevent Shareholders from purposely winding up their solvent Companies to claim entrepreneur’s relief, pay less tax, then start the same business again (known in the trade as a ‘Phoenix’) so some Shareholders are Liquidating their companies now before the changes takes place. If you need advice on liquidating your business, contact Lisa Thomas, Insolvency Practitioner at Neville & Co. on 01752 786800.
If funds are less than £25,000 they can ask HM Revenue and Customs (“HMRC”) for clearance to pay the money to Shareholders as a capital distribution. Rather than being classed as a dividend (taxed as income at rates up to 45%) it will be classed as capital instead and hopefully taxed as a capital gain under ‘Entrepreneurs Relief’ at just 10% tax. However, when the funds/assets held in the Company are over £25,000 you cannot get HMRC clearance and will need to dissolve the company using an MVL.
