Editor’s Note... Hello - I hope you’re all having a good month. I’m trying to, but the pollen this time of year is leaving me worse for wear! We’ve got some fantastic Business Profiles in this month’s issue. We met with father and son duo who create intricate, hand-crafted bespoke art pieces using sustainably sourced hardwoods. Our team met with a different Wolferstans team this time at their office based in Plymstock - with such a big team of over 200 people, there’s so much we have to learn about the local law firm. I’d like to use this note to let all of our readers know that I am stepping down as Editor for our magazine. I have had a great time getting to know the team here at OM and Plympton Magazine, and I’d like to thank all of our clients for being so fantastic to work with. Our Interim Abby will be taking over the reins and I’m confident in saying that she will do a fab job! Enjoy this issue and have a great month!

The kitchen is without doubt the heart of the home, and cooking brings the family together. If there was a cost effective and environmentally concious way of updating your kitchen, you want to know you are in the right hands with the best customer service. We spoke with Dream Doors to find out more about what they do and what they have to offer.
D
kitchens. They can provide anything from a complete kitchen to a single door and everything in between. “Customers choose as little or as much as they want, and select from a huge range of doors styles and colours, from traditional to contemporary, in any colour and in made to measure sizes.”
ream Doors has successfully provided inspirational kitchen makeovers since 1999, installing over 70,000 kitchens and today has 90 showrooms nationwide. Their Plymouth showroom opened in May and business has been thriving since. We caught up with Dream Doors business owner, David Ward, for a chat about his role at Dream Doors and the new Plymouth showroom.
When asked how the new showroom has been doing, David told us “The new showroom has been warmly received by our customers. It’s designed to help them select from the range of products, and situated on a main road with free parking outside it’s really easy for them to get to.” It’s no wonder their new showroom has been a huge hit across Plymouth and the South West.
David entered Dream Doors after a highly successful career in the Royal Marines, which included a year leading the UK reconstruction programme in Iraq, followed by a 4-year spell leading The C Group Charity under the Chairmanship of Tony Rowe, supporting Marines injured on operational service transition to meaningful future careers.
As consumers, we are becoming more aware of how what we do impacts the environment; this is why Dream Doors are committed to the environment and focus on sustainability. They replace the doors and keep existing carcasses. By doing this they reduce the waste of a kitchen upgrade by over 50%, allowing them to use smaller and more fuel-efficient vehicles for transporting goods.
“Dream Doors is a highly reputable franchise opportunity to which we can incorporate our military values and work ethos to provide exceptional service to our customers”.
They recycle all of the appliances removed from homes, passing them through community groups to be checked and re-used to support people in need, or sold for charitable benefit.
As a family business, working within a national chain gives Dream Doors Plymouth a significant advantage; with quality and competitively priced products through a national supply chain, combined with a highly ethical and values-based family business, and a team that takes pride in their customer service.
We asked David about what the future has in store for Dream Doors Plymouth, he explained “We’re ambitious and principled. As we grow we’ll look to take on charitable projects within the community where we can add genuine value, and will continue to incorporate further initiatives in our focus on sustainability. We’re also looking to take on apprentices and others to help them commence new careers, enabling them to learn and develop under the supervision of our exceptional team.”
“It’s all about people, and we’re blessed to have an incredible team in the showroom and fitting, who combine years of experience with impeccable personal values.” David believes Dream Doors are different from other kitchen suppliers, their focus is to provide customers a choice and value for money when they upgrade their

SURVIVING THE HOT SUMMER NIGHTS Avoid waking up surrounded by a flood of sweat every morning by following these very simple tips
A
s much as we welcome the warmth and sunshine here in the UK, our bodies just aren’t built for high-levels of heat. The idea of a nice, sunny day at the beach, being able to relax, working on your tan, or taking a dip in the sea to cool off all sound like wonderful things - that is until you think of the other, not-so-wonderful scenarios that also accompany the sunshine and hot weather. The night times during the summer are often the most unbearable and restless nights of sleep. “Do I sleep with the duvet on top of me, or off? What about if I stick one foot out? I can’t do that or I leave myself open and defenceless to the monster under my bed.” These thoughts continue on a vicious cycle until before you know it, the sun is rising for a new day. Don’t succumb to the heat disturbing your night time rest this summer, use the following tips to cool off and properly enjoy your slumber the way you should.
1. LESS IS MORE As cosy as your night-time wear may be, it is probably a bit too much for the increasing temperatures. A light, cotton shirt paired with shorts is the perfect combo for the warmer weather - cotton is a very breathable material, so you won’t feel as if your clothes are clinging to you. There is also the option to opt out clothes, but that is completely down to you and your own personal preference!
2. KEEP YOUR BLINDS AND SHUTTERS CLOSED DURING THE DAY This tip will also keep any nosy neighbours or passerby’s from peering in your home! By keeping the blinds and the windows shut throughout the day when it’s blistering hot outside, you can dramatically reduce the temperature of your home. So when you return for the evening as the temperatures are starting to decrease, you can open your windows to allow for some cooler air to drift through your home.
3. CHOOSE COTTON OR LINEN BEDDING As mentioned briefly before, cotton is a very breathable material, so using it for bedding should help reduce the amount of heat being produced whilst you sleep. Invest in a good quality cotton or linen bedding and sleep with just this covering you rather than thicker bedding. It may not seem like much is covering you, but like we’ve already said, less is more!

Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk
4. TAKE A COOL SHOWER BEFORE BED Cold showers aren’t always the most pleasant, but they will help you cool off before settling into bed. Try to avoid taking a hot shower or bath of an evening, as your body takes a long time to cool down.
5. INVEST IN A FAN An electric fan is the simplest and quickest way to cool your room down. The movement of the air will also make it harder for flies and creepy-crawlys to make their way into your room, which is often a problem from having to keep your window constantly open during the summer months. Just make sure to consider the cost, as you don’t want a surprise spike in your electricity bill to greet you at the end of the month!
6. SWITCH OFF Electrical appliances will generate heat if left on a plugged in. Before bed, make sure to switch off all of your electronics at the base to prevent any build up of heat. It’s only a small adjustment, but will help to make a difference overall.
7. FROZEN PILLOW This is certainly one way of getting the ‘cold side of the pillow’, albeit slightly more extreme, but definitely effective for those who overheat easily during the night. Placing your pillow or pillow case in the freezer will allow it to cool down in time for bed. You can also do this with your sheets, it just depends whether you fancy stripping your bed and re-making it every night - which is perhaps not the most relaxing activity!
8. STAY HYDRATED This tip is a good one to follow in general, but in terms of a cooler nights sleep, staying hydrated will keep your body temperature down. This is because your body does not have enough fluid to sweat. Make sure to have a glass of water before bed and keep one by your bedside overnight in case you need a quick cool-down.
9. EAT DINNER EARLIER Eating food can increase your body temperature, so try and make an effort to eat your last meal of the day earlier to give your body a chance to metabolise the food and cool down before you settle down. It may not seem like much, but these small changes in our body can often make it more difficult to sleep.
Hopefully these tips can help you achieve a cooler nights sleep throughout the warm summer months. Spending the night time tossing and turning is no fun for anyone, and you can’t enjoy the sunshine (we may or may not have) without feeling fully revitalised after a good nights sleep. These tips are also handy for those who generally find that they get increasingly hot throughout the night. There’s plenty of tips and tricks that can help you cool down quicker, it’s just choosing the ones that best help you.

Father-son duo, Andy and Paul based in Plymouth, create beautifully handmade, bespoke works of art from their home. We spent the afternoon with them finding out about Cedarwood Arts and exploring their creations.
S
etting up a business in the South West is the trickiest at the best of times, let alone in the arts industry. The UK economy is changing rapidly and the vast range of businesses to compete with across the country and in the South West, in particular, makes it hard to stand out above the rest. For business owner Paul Mills and his son Andy Mills, Cedarwood Arts doesn’t just stand out, it shines with utter uniqueness. OM caught up with Paul and Andy to find out more about Cedarwood Arts and how their business is quickly evolving.
Meet Paul & Andy Mills “Last year I purchased a scroll saw, and I was experimenting with ideas and things I would like to make, but then I had this idea about creating feathers.”
Being self-employed isn’t new to Paul Mills, who has worked in the building trade for over 40 years. Paul has been striving for a new venture that combines his love for nature and walking, with his passion for arts and creative work.
The experiments started out as a hobby when Paul invested in his scroll saw, quickly he began to see potential in the creations. After getting in touch with a local furniture maker in Yealmpton who supplies locally and responsibly sourced offcuts of wood, from oak and beech to birch, Paul began to experiment with the feathers, the Cedarwood signature piece.
Paul’s son, Andy, has been working in publishing for the last 5 years around London and Cambridge but decided in March 2019 to take a leap of faith and move back to Plymouth to fulfil his dream of illustrating fulltime.
“They were originally conceived as bookmarks and paperweight. But they have gradually evolved.”
The concept of Cedarwood Arts originated from Paul’s love of walking and nature. He has been walking National trails around Britain for the past three years, including the Two Moors Way, a trail from Lynmouth to Wembury to the Cotswolds Way last year where he met Laura and Amy. Their friendship inspired the feathers behind Cedarwood Arts when Paul left a trail of feathers for them to find during their journey along the trail. Since parting ways from the trail, Paul has kept in touch with the pair who are from Portland, Oregon; they encouraged him to make the feathers.
14
Cedarwood Arts began in March 2019 when Andrew moved back to Plymouth, he wanted to try and do something different. With a BA in Illustration and MA in Publishing, creating artwork was only a natural progression for Andy. He explained: “When I came back, my dad had a new hobby every week or so. One week he’s going to be a painter, the next week he’s going to be a carpenter. And on a whim, he had bought the pyrography machine. He had done little tests with it, some were better than others, but he was getting frustrated with it.”
Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk
Since Cedarwood began a short few months ago, Paul and Andy have been proactive in networking and showing off their beautiful creations at exhibitions, tradeshows and have even grabbed the interest of 4 local galleries. Including Kaya Gallery at Plymouth Barbican and Wildwood Arts based on Dartmoor. Each and every piece Cedarwood Arts produce is distinctively unique; photographs don’t do them any justice, they are truly stunning in person. Andy creates the illustrations on the wood after it is cut, shaped and sanded by Paul. The pyrography pen gives different marks and textures depending on the nib used and the temperature. No two pieces are the same with different types of wood having different responses to the heat, the wood almost guiding the illustration. The opportunity for this business is just phenomenal, everything they can do is bespoke, if you want something in particular made, they can do it. It’s no wonder their calendar has filled up rapidly! With festivals, networking events and shows taking up a vast amount of their time. “If we’re successful we will carry on doing it. The opportunities are just endless.” Things are looking up for the pair who have been busy growing their social media presence through Instagram, Facebook and their newly designed website by Andy. They have focused their time on creating an online shop to showcase and sell their pieces beyond Devon and Cornwall, investing in 3D scanning and printing their original pieces to sell at an affordable price. “It’s not just the artwork, it’s carved down first, it’s got a full on journey behind it with two people working on each piece. Each one being anywhere between 6 and 10 hours, in completion!”
“I know it’s going to take 18 months to 2 years before it really gets to a point that you would hope people have heard of the name at least.” With business evolving as successfully as their’s is in only three months, we asked both Paul and Andy what their vision is for Cedarwood Arts. Andy told us - “For me, this project came at a good time for me, I wasn’t too happy in London. I was wanting to get away and to be honest, I don’t think I’m built for office work, it’s just not my thing. So it sounds really low scale, but just being able to make a living from the artwork and doing something that I really really love, that’s really what’s driving me. The dream would be walking into a shop, going to the art section and having a book that’s a collection of my work. My artwork has always been a hobby, I never thought it would come to anything. The possibility of it being what I can be known for is the drive for me.” For Paul, it is more about combining his passion for nature, with creativity and making a living out of it. - “I’ve been in the building trade for 40 years and I’m looking for a way of cutting back and if I can make a living from being creative; with me starting this process and with Andrew coming back, its fate really, things have really come together.”It really is incredible to see how hard work, authenticity, and motivation has allowed Paul and Andy to develop Cedarwood Arts into a unique and well-received business in just three months. Their bond as father and son, along with the raw talent from both will only allow them to be successful not only in the South West but internationally. There are limitless opportunities for Cedarwood Arts, and with local support, they really will go from strength to strength. For more information about Cedarwood Arts, or if you want a commissioned piece, please don’t hesitate to contact Paul or Andy. To see their work head over to www.cedarwoodarts.com

MAN ON A PUSH BIKE Support Paul in his Coast-to-Coast ride to raise money for Plym Neuro Rehab Unit
T
here are many goals that we have set ourselves for 2019. Some of us want to improve our health, some bid to wake up earlier and make the most of the day, but this man, chose to set himself an even bigger challenge. Man on a Push Bike is a sponsored cycle ride that will be carried out by husband and wife team Paul and Donna Tullock. In August of 2018, Paul’s Dad suffered a near-fatal brain haemorrhage, which resulted in a 62 day stay in hospital. Thankfully he’s on the mend now, but only after some fantastic care by the people at the Plym Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at Mount Gould Hospital, Plymouth. The entire ordeal inspired Paul to take on a challenge this year and raise some funds for the unit. These funds will go towards extra equipment to aid the rehab process for future patients.

“I am planning to cycle the ‘Coast-to-Coast’ challenge across Devon. This is a 91 mile route from Ilfracombe to Plymouth. Well, that’s not enough of a challenge in my mind, so; I’m doing it twice: Plymouth, to Ilfracombe, to Plymouth, all in one day.” Paul will be joined by David of Velo-Smith (pictured in the header), Plympton’s locals bike shop. He is also a partner of #rideforplym. The ride will be taking place on Saturday 13th July this year. If you would like to sponsor the ride, there are three sponsorship packages available. Sorting out your legal requirements doesn’t have to be difficult, especially not when there are fantastic, local lawyers right on your doorstep. There’s no need to look any further - release any concerns you have with your legal needs by putting your faith in Wolferstans’ Plymstock.
A
ny solicitor can know the law and be good at what they do, but when dealing with these often stressful situations, you want to feel at ease throughout the entire process. Being able to walk into a good atmosphere, knowing that the person dealing with your legal requirements is both competent and approachable, is exactly what you should always be looking for in a solicitor well look no further, because this legal team does exactly that. Wolferstans Plymstock is a local solicitor’s office that first opened its door in the 60s. They are the longest established solicitors based in the area, with other offices in Plympton and North Hill, Plymouth. With a team of nine permanent staff who are all based locally, you’re sure to be with met with top quality service from individuals who have a great local knowledge.
“The whole point is that a client should be able to come to this office and be able to access every single service that the whole firm provides. It’s about bringing the service to the client and making sure that under this roof we can provide everything a client needs. “It’s about convenience too. It’s a pain having to travel into town, you want to be able to use your local solicitor and one that is familiar with the area too.” Wolferstans can bring their service to you! The team will often also travel to meet clients at no extra cost. Some people may find it difficult to get to the office - particularly if they’re getting older - and accessibility issues should not prevent clients from getting the legal advice they need. Rebecca Bawler - a Chartered Legal Executive - wants to ensure that no one is singled out: “We go wherever we need to go - it’s about accessibility and we want our clients to get advice if they need it. Usually, there is a reason behind it, and it’s difficult for them to get into the office, so we try to accommodate clients’ needs wherever we can.” The Plymstock team currently offer a free clinic at their office. Between 10am-12pm every Thursday, it offers free expert legal advice.
Their office isn’t just limited to the permanent staff based there, lawyers from other Wolferstans offices can also use the space to meet with clients. Rebecca Moloney - a family law solicitor - tells us how Wolferstans want to make everything as convenient for the client as possible. They won’t make you go out of your way to find expert legal advice if you can access it on your doorstep:
The free legal clinic doesn’t require you to make an appointment - but do be wary that there may be a queue if lots of people show up! They currently offer advice for a wide range of legal queries and are happy to refer you to other colleagues at the firm who may be able to help further. The firm provides opportunities to students in Plymouth, to give them the best experience of what they have to offer. Most of the staff at Wolferstans Plymstock have worked for the firm for many years and they want to make sure they’re getting the best people from the local area. “Wolferstans is a really nice place to work.” Rebecca Moloney explains, “We’ve got a good atmosphere and we want to keep that going, and one of the reasons we’re so successful is because people like the service that we give. This is why it’s so important for us to be closely linked to the university, so we can carry that service down and let the students know exactly what we’re looking for.” It’s not just looking at what budding solicitors can bring to Wolferstans; the firm is very good at supporting their staff on an internal level. Rebecca Bawler was given the help she needed as an employee at Wolferstans: “I started in the Wolferstans’ general office, in the administration team, and the firm supported me in completing my CILex studies whilst working, and now I’m a Chartered Legal Executive - so it’s not just trainee solicitors and law students, they offer great internal support as well.”
Wolferstans has a special commitment with the Armed Forces, having helped them and their families for many years. Many members of Wolferstans are veterans or come from a service family, therefore they have a great underlying knowledge and a strong understanding of how the Armed Forces work. The company was awarded the Gold Award in national recognition of their commitment to the Armed Forces under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. They are the first law firm in the UK to receive the award. Wolferstans is built on reputation. Having been around for 200 years, they have a lot of different accreditations that not every solicitor service has. The firm is always looking at growth. By being involved in the local community, they hope to raise the profile of the team. Caroline Pellow - an Associate and Solicitor - tells our team how they’re making more people aware of their presence in Plymstock: “We’ve been going out and meeting people in the local community recently to raise awareness of the team in Plymstock and trying to bridge the gap between Kingsbridge and here. There are not many firms for people to go to in the South Hams and it’s much easier to travel to Plymstock than Plymouth for people living in areas like Modbury, Newton Ferrers, and Noss Mayo, Brixton and Yealmpton. We are just making more people aware that we are here.” With qualified staff, who have great legal and local knowledge, Pauline Anning - an Associate and Solicitor - explains why people are choosing Wolferstans over other law firms: “We’re all qualified lawyers with a lot of experience. Local knowledge is useful. The long established relationships we have with other local businesses, having worked together for so many years, really helps our clients.” For more information about Wolferstans, the services they offer, and how they can help you, contact them at the Plymstock Office through any of the details listed below.

In today’s modern society, travelling through our day to day lives, many of us will require expert legal advice at some point. When it comes to your legal requirements, you want to be 100% sure that you are in the right hands.
T
here are so many solicitors to chose from these days and now most of us want a local firm that can provide not only first-class legal advice, but also be approachable and friendly. This of course can be difficult to find but that is certainly not the case at Wolferstans, Plympton. Wolferstans is a major Plymouth law firm with a history going back as far as 1812. The firm is based in North Hill with satellite offices in Plympton and Plymstock. The Plympton branch joined the team over two years ago after merging with Clark and Weeks who were formerly based in the office on the Ridgeway. Martin Weeks - Solicitor, Partner and head of the Wolferstans office in the Ridgeway - and his team on the Ridgeway have been providing legal services to the Plympton community and further afield for over 20 years. Wolferstans have been helping the people of Plymouth solve their legal problems for the last 200 years and today are more committed than ever to doing so. As you would expect from a firm the size of Wolferstans, they are able to offer a wide range of legal services to meet the needs of individuals, families and businesses throughout the area. For private individuals, they can help in times of change such as moving home or making a Will, or in periods of difficulty such as a bereavement, family breakdown, problems at work or making a claim for an injury sustained. For their business, public and voluntary sector clients, they can help with commercial property transactions, dispute resolution, employment law, corporate restructuring and commercial contracts. With outstanding legal knowledge, Wolferstans will provide you with the best legal advice.
Meet the Wolferstan’s Plympton Team! Martin explains “I want our clients to get personal attention and to feel comfortable about approaching us and know that they will receive a sensitive, sensible and compassionate as well as a professional service.” It is important to have a well-known brand so clients pick your service over the thousands of options already available. Lydia Wilkinson - a Chartered Legal Executive based at the Plympton office - explains how Wolferstans also play a very active role in supporting a variety of different charities. “As a firm, we pick a charity each year and this year we are delighted to be supporting St Luke’s Hospice. We will be holding various fundraising events for St Lukes such as a bake sale, quizzes, staff challenge days and we will be volunteering and joining St Lukes’ annual events such as the Midnight Walk and Men’s Day Out. Not to mention The Elmer Trail which will run throughout the summer 2019. We even had Elmer the Elephant in our window recently! There is always something going on.” Martin believes that the Plympton office window which has changing displays throughout the year is a focal point for the people of Plympton and is at the heart of the community. “Wolferstans are committed to building a long-term relationship with our clients and to meeting their changing needs and we are a local team of friendly legal professionals.” For more information about Wolferstans, the services they offer, and how they can help you, contact them at the Plympton Office through any of the details listed below:

At times, some of us in smaller businesses may often find ourselves feeling quite isolated, however by coming together with other like minded businesses and business people, it’s astonishing how much can be achieved through a collaboration of different skill sets, mindsets and overall, people. This is exactly what the Plym Chamber are all about.
T
here are many different networking groups that business owners can explore around Plymouth and the South Hams however one of the largest networking groups, local to Plympton, is set to see a lot of exciting changes in the very near future. Formerly known as the Plympton Chamber, the newly renamed ‘Plym Chamber’ is rebranding and expanding to reach out to even more businesses across Plymouth and the surrounding area in the coming year. Plympton Chamber, not to be confused with Devon and Plymouth Chamber which is a separate organisation, first became established in 2010. The local community aimed to engage with local business folk who had a common aim and purpose. Stella Goodman - Secretary of Plym Chamber and founding member of Plympton Chamber - wanted to utilise the Plympton Chamber to be able to reach out to more local businesses, especially smaller ones: “Our mission statement is ‘Together we can do so much’ and I still think that’s true today - especially if you’re a sole trader because when you’re working by
32
yourself, you can be quite isolated. So we thought the Chamber should be reaching out, in particular, to small businesses as collectively we can achieve a lot together.”
Now known as the Plym Chamber which is currently standing at 120 members, the community aims to keep steadily expanding and branching out to even more local businesses and business owners. The decision to rebrand didn’t come overnight. Although they are based in Plympton, Beverley Clarke - a volunteer for Plym Chamber - explains that a lot of their members are based outside of the PL7 area, so there was a need to expand:
“Part of our success has been our breakfast networking meetings. This has enabled the Chamber to grow from 20 people to 120 people. There is obviously a need for small businesses to work together, and it’s just getting bigger and bigger. The majority of our members now are outside of the PL7 area.” The name change will see the launch of the new Plym Chamber VIP Rewards Scheme. These rewards can be obtained by showing commitment to the Chamber and receiving points for doing so for example by bringing a guest along to a Breakfast meeting or by hosting a networking event for the Chamber. By encouraging more guests along they will gain an insight into the opportunities within the Chamber and, hopefully, see the benefits of joining the Plym Chamber. Matthew Bryant - the current Chairman of the Plym Chamber tells us more about how this works:
Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk
“It’s a points-based rewards scheme, where points are awarded based on the amount of involvement and interaction with the Chamber, bearing in mind that we are all volunteers organising it, so it is quite a commitment, and therefore the more people and the more members who can contribute and get involved in some way, then the more successful we will be as a group.”
The Plym Chamber currently hosts a number of different meetings. On the second Tuesday of each month they hold their popular Breakfast Meeting at Boringdon Park Golf Club, in addition there is a Talking Tables supper club, with guest speakers, which is held quarterly at Elfordleigh and also their well established Members Mingle, which is an opportunity for businesses to showcase their business at their place of work.
The Plym Chamber caters for all businesses and its membership covers a wide range of different occupations, trades and professions from the business community including lawyers, accountants, financial advisors, builders, plumbers, painters and decorators … the list goes on!
“Before the name change, we felt outside of the breakfast meetings, people were put off joining because they thought the Plympton Chamber was exclusive to Plympton, but we hope that the name change will now help combat that.” Stella explains.
Plym Chamber is an affordable business network with real benefits. “One of the things we’ve always aspired to be is inexpensive.” Stella explains, “Every event that we organise we try and do it cost-effectively. It’s all going to be very affordable.” The current price to join the Plym Chamber as a new member is only a £75 joining fee for an annual membership. After that, if you setup to pay through standing order, the current annual renewal fee stands at only £60 per annum (corporate offers also available). The aim of the Plym Chamber now is to encourage more members to join. Their goal is to hit the 200 members mark within the next year. Matthew Bryant describes the great opportunities that come with being a Plym Chamber member:
“The Breakfast Club really struck me specifically because it’s a good opportunity to share topics of interest.” So you might have a presentation from a member firm on a specific legal topic, you might have a property specialist giving an update on the current housing market, or it could be individual businesses just having a platform to promote their services and their products to other members. And it’s really not easy for small businesses to reach out to the larger community, so it’s a ready-made network for that.”
If you are a business keen to get involved and become a member, then visit the Chamber website for more information. Website: plymchamber.co.uk Call: 01752 340183 Email: enquiries@plymchamber.co.uk
The aim of the Plym Chamber is to continue to grow and encourage people locally within Devon and Cornwall to join. “To summarise what the chamber has done up until now,” Matthew explains, “ the main aim has been to engage with the local community directly through staging events like “Light up Plympton” in the run up to Christmas whilst engaging with the business community at the same time.” With such a wide range of businesses involved within the Chamber, it is important to cater to the needs of every member. Beverley explains that: “Taking away from what we learn from our Breakfast Meetings, it’s about listening to what our members want, so we can then go forward and deliver things that people may not do as an individual, but collectively as a group they might want to do. There are lots of ideas taking shape going forwards.”
Plym Chamber launched on May 1st. If you’re still unsure about why you should get involved with the Plym Chamber, Carolyn Croft - a committee member of Plym Chamber - has a very good reason why: “What’s very good about our Chamber and where it differs from some of the other networking groups, is that we’re quite informal and relaxed, everyone’s very approachable.” The Plym Chamber can help local businesses spread the word of what they do through their community and network, so it would be foolish not to take up the opportunity that is right on your doorstep!
Together We can do so Much Plym Chamber is not affiliated to Devon and Plymouth Chamber.

Adopt, Don’t Shop Here are some IMPORTANT reasons why you should consider Adopting, NOT Shopping!
P
ets really do make a home complete, whether you have a rabbit or a rottweiler; we all love our furry friends and some even treat their pets like babies. We all know puppies and kittens make our hearts melt! With the growing population of pets across the UK, it is more important that ever to raise awareness of the ‘Adopt, Don’t Shop’ movement. Introducing a pet to your home is one of the most important and difficult decisions to make; and definitely not something you jump straight into without any thought. There are many factors that contribute to the decision to add a pet to your family, whether its because the kids are pestering you for a kitten or you are in love with a certain breed of dog and have dreamt about having one your whole life.
Before saying a definitive yes to getting a pet you must consider a number of things first. Does a pet fit into your lifestyle? The biggest thing to consider when embarking on this decision is: Can you afford to take care of a pet? Food, grooming, walking and vets bills really do add up! If you have made the final decision and introducing a pet is the right thing for you then another important choice for you to make is do you adopt or do you shop? The Adopt Don’t Shop Movement has been around for quite some time but in recent years has become more known. The movement advises people who want to invest in a pet such as a dog or a cat to go through a rescue center instead of going through a breeder, pet shop or puppy farm to get a pet.
You can save a life By adopting, you’re giving a pet another chance at life. There are many reasons why pets end up in animal shelters and usually is not the pet’s fault. By adopting pets from an animal shelter; or a dog or cat rescue, not only will you find a friend for a lifetime but also will provide a pet with a second chance at a rightfully deserved life. You help stop pet overpopulation By choosing to adopt rather than go to a breeder for a specific type of pet, you are caring for a pet that already needs support instead of bringing another puppy or kitten into the world. By going to a shelter such as Gables or Woodside. You will make a huge difference to the life of a pet currently waiting for their forever home. Adoption helps more than just one animal The role of animal shelters is to provide shelter for homeless animals. This means that when you adopt an animal from one of these shelters, you help provide a home for that animal while at the same time opening up space for another homeless animal. It’ll cost you less Usually, when you adopt a pet, the cost of spay/ neuter, first vaccinations (and sometimes even microchipping!) is included in the adoption price, which can save you some of the upfront costs of adding a new member to your family. Depending on the animal, you may also save on housebreaking and training expenses. We could go on and on about the many different reasons why adopting is worth considering but at the end of the day it all comes down to personal preference and what suits you. The most important thing to remember when it comes to adopting is that you are saving a life. You are changing a life that has been dramatically disrupted and impacted through no fault of their own and ultimately giving a pet their forever home.
