AN INTERVIEW WITH MIKE LEGASSICK Mike’s success within his career has grown from years of study and hard work but most importantly, it has stemmed from his likeability and trustworthiness that he has maintained throughout his life by business colleagues and clients that he has met along the way. The trust of a client and the ability to be liked by many people allows the relationship between Mike and the client to become strong, which is paramount when dealing with clients hard-earned life savings. What started as a job collecting monthly premiums on a rainy day in Plympton has evolved into a means of educating readers and clients on all he has learnt over his lifetime to give you a head start in controlling your money and your life.
F
Meet Mike LeGassick
inance was never something Mike was interested in. If you had asked Mike as a teenager, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ Mike would have shrugged his shoulders, and not for one second thought he’d become an Independent Financial Advisor (specialising in pensions and investments) and a Behavioural Investment Coach. He loves his job and the responsibility that comes with it.
his first day in Plympton well. It was raining and miserable and he didn’t really have a clue what he was doing. He should have been joined by his supervisor to show him the ropes but was instead left to his own devices. He vividly remembers thinking to himself ‘What on earth am I doing here?’ But something inside of him made him keep going, day after day until he learnt more and more about the profession he was unknowingly falling into.
Mike never really applied himself at school and ended up with just a handful of CSE’s in his pocket and left for the world of full-time work. He fell into the world of retail as soon as he left King’s Tamerton School at age 15. With retail, he learnt a lot about sales and talking to people but the main thing he learnt was that working in a busy retail environment on a bank holiday wasn’t for him.
He then progressed to work for an insurance company and then Lloyds TSB. Mike began to see his passion growing for the finance profession and decided to take more exams and gained more qualifications to become what he is today, an independent financial advisor with over 30 years experience. He specialises in pensions and investments and is passionate about telling people the unvarnished truth about money without the useless jargon and how to invest wisely and reduce investment management costs. You could say he is the Martin Lewis of the investment world.
Snooker was and still is, a fond passion of Mike’s ever since he was 13. He played for Devon and on the Pro-am circuit and met a lot of people in the snooker fraternity that became close friends of his. One friend who worked for Pearl Assurance approached him and said ‘You’re friendly, you’ve got a good sense of humour, and you get on well with people, that’s half the battle. Why don’t you apply for a job with Pearl Assurance?’ Mike thought to himself, well it’s got to be better than retail on a bank holiday weekend, so he took the aptitude test and by the skin of his teeth, he passed it and soon after, he was hired at age 23. Mike remembers his first day working for Pearl Assurance as if it were yesterday. His role at Pearl Assurance was essentially to collect premiums from his customers in Plympton and encourage them to invest in regular savings plans. Sadly, this type of saving has long gone which is a shame as it engendered a savings mentality. Mike remembers

To be an ‘independent advisor’ doesn’t mean he works on his own, far from it. Mike has a fantastic personal assistant called Sharon, and a great support team back in the office in Ivybridge. The independent part means that he has access to every single provider to ensure the best fit for the client. 8 years ago, Manning & Company, based in Ivybridge approached Mike and asked him to join them to which he told us ‘was the best move I have ever made.’ 4 years ago he became one of the directors of the company. Mikes relationship with the finance profession goes hand in hand, except for the complex jargon that tags along with it. He believes there are ways to explain complicated matters that just instantly make sense
Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk
and he proves this daily with his clients and did this with myself, the Editor and Myles, the managing director at our interview with him. To be able to understand how people think and creatively phrase the question or explanation has been mastered by Mike through his 10 years studying behavioural psychology. As he felt the profession needed some simplicity, Mike decided to write his book called ‘Your Money and Your Life.’ ‘Your Money and Your Life’ is a collection of firsthand stories, examples, and simple steps to follow that have stuck by him through the years and things that he wished he had known when he was younger. The book is written on topics that have been widely discussed for hundreds of years, so it is no surprise that he can’t re-invent the wheel, however, Mike has developed a certain way in which it has been written that will make you think ‘Nobody has ever explained it to me in that way before – That makes so much sense now!’ The book is composed of two sections. The first half is largely about life lessons and it is important to note, this book is not only about money but also about life choices too. Chapters include Planning for the life you choose, the mistakes we make with our money and how to avoid them, wishes won’t bring riches, and how not to be a workplace prisoner. The second half of the book is focused on investing and your behaviour around money. There is even a section on regret. Flowing through the whole book is an underlying theme of ‘Life is not a rehearsal’ which is something Mike believes very strongly in. Mike has also designed a website to educate his clients and readers to keep them on the right track when it comes to their finances and mindset. The website, www.saverbehaviour.co.uk is comparable to an educational tool, full of bite-sized information and easy to understand video content to educate yourself around money and investing. Amongst some fantastic tools embedded into the website is a calculator which shows historically how much you would have amassed if you began investing just £1 a day in the stock market from the day you were born. We were both shocked when we did this for ourselves. We weren’t even close to guessing how much this would have been worth today. Mike likes to carry out this exercise with his clients and they are, more often than not, shocked by the results. Therefore, his golden piece of advice to anyone is ‘Start early’ because you are unlikely to ever be able to make up for the lost time. The book and the website are not just about money, they are about changing your perspective on things. Mike has done this in a way that is thought-provoking, creative and motivational, highlighting all of the
common financial ‘blind spots’ that we make daily without being aware of them. However, reading is one thing, but doing is quite another. If you don’t push yourself, nobody will do it for you. This is where the psychological aspects come into play. Mike will run through scenarios that help you to see things from a different perspective and in turn, reveal a more capable version of yourself and how to be successful. Mike says the primary objective of any investment is to maintain its purchasing power so invest with prudence in mind, not performance. Anything above this should be deemed a welcome bonus. Investing wisely for your or for your children’s future can be done safely with the help and guidance of Mike. Your retirement funds should enable you to maintain your standard of living without fear of running out of money. Most people just think, I’ll save something over the years and that should give me enough, however, most people forget about inflation which erodes the purchasing power of your money over time. The £50,000 you managed to save over the years won’t be worth £50,000 in the future. Think about it like this, if Mike said to a client, ‘I have a great investment idea for you, you put your life savings in here, and it is guaranteed to lose 2 ¼% each year.’ You just wouldn’t do it! This would be madness, but this is the effect inflation has on people who sit on cash for years in a low paying bank account. Another well-worded scenario Mike likes to ask his clients is ‘Do you believe you could save 20% of your income each month?’ Most people say no, however, later, he asks another question, ‘Do you think you could live fairly comfortably on 80% of your monthly income?’ Most people think they could. To be able to live on 80% of your income is effectively to be able to save 20% of it. It was just phrased differently. Mike tells us that a lot of the work he does with his clients is psychological and once you overcome that hurdle, you have passed the most difficult part. Unfortunately, emotions generally trump logic, and this is where Mike can help.

Trusting the stock market with your money is something humans are not well-equipped to do. It can be daunting. Mike tells us ‘One of the biggest mistakes investors make is that they confuse volatility with permanent loss.’ He then began to explain that the process of investing money into the stock market is comparable to a rollercoaster. As you strap yourself in, your mind is full of different emotions from fear to excitement and adrenalin and you experience the steep climbs and sharp drops and bends and loop the loops. This is volatility. Midway through a loop the loop and people are screaming ‘get me out of here!’, get me off this ride! – If you had managed to get out of your seat while upside down, that would be permanent loss. Yet you keep going until the ride reaches the end and you come out of it unscathed. Markets go up and down all the time, but long-term history has proven they go up much more than down over time. Explaining concepts like these to clients is key to managing their expectations. Mike has only ever invested his clients’ money in things that have always worked. i.e., investing their money in a huge collection of the greatest business in the world. He will never invest their money in fads, flavours of the month, or things that just happen to be working now. This is not investing. This is speculating. He recommends that clients take a ‘sloth-like approach’, to investing. Looking at the value every day will not help you in any way, just let time do its thing. This way you won’t be panicking about any temporary drops in the market and therefore won’t be tempted to withdraw it at the wrong time. Imagine if house prices were reported every day on the news. Thankfully, they aren’t so people don’t care to look. Warren Buffett is regarded as the greatest investor that has ever lived and is a great example of someone who has great patience when investing. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos approached Warren Buffett and asked, ‘Your process is so simple and proven to work, why doesn’t everyone do what you do?’ Warren replied, ‘Because no one wants to get rich slowly Jeff.’ Mike has phrased his questions so well over the years that he can determine whether a client understands investing or not in no time at all. He asks his clients, ‘Do you know what Black Monday was in 1987?’ This was the single biggest stock market crash in UK history. And then he asks them, ‘Do you know what the
w: manningandco.co.uk
8
FTSE 100 is?’ It is the 100 biggest companies in the UK. ‘Imagine you had £100,000 invested in the FTSE 100 and the news came on reporting the biggest stock market crash in UK history. ‘What do you think your £100,000 is worth right at that moment?’ Most people say ‘zero’. In fact, the stock market fell by 22% in 48 hours, but you haven’t lost any money because you haven’t cashed it in – remember the rollercoaster, don’t get out when you’re upside-down. If you thought you would have lost all your money, that would have meant that the 100 largest companies in the UK went bust overnight. And for that to happen, it would be Armageddon territory and your money would be meaningless anyway. Lack of understanding of the stock market means you could potentially make some bad decisions. The stock market is now way higher than back in 1987. Stock markets will suffer big temporary dips occasionally, but they have always come back stronger to reach new highs. The book is for everybody, whether you have just finished your education, halfway through your life or just about to retire. He is certain that everybody will learn something from it and if the reader follows it through with actions, then they will save tens or even hundreds of thousands through their lifetime. And where does Mike see himself 5 years from now? ‘I love what I do, and I will continue to ensure my clients remain on the right track.’ He may reduce his hours and pass on clients to younger members of the team but ultimately, he doesn’t want to stop. Another book may make an appearance in the future focusing solely on how to be a better investor. Director at Manning & Company, Behavioural Investment Coach, member of the Parliamentary Financial Review Team and the UK Leaders Council, 2nd in the South West for Top-Rated Advisor by client reviews on ‘VouchedFor’ and not forgetting, great friend to his clients, Mike has gained a lot of knowledge, understanding, and trust throughout his career that he would now like to share with you, the reader. To buy his book, head to www.lulu.com or Amazon and other online book retailers. It comes in hardback, paperback, and Kindle versions with varying prices from £2.99-£29.95. He is also releasing an audiobook version very soon! To find out more about Mike, see details below…

Owner and founder: Nathan Counter With a passion for golf and a love and care for children, Nathan Counter decided to combine the two to create a fun experience for kids and adults to enjoy but with a twist. He made the courses portable! Spending time at fun fairs with his two children, he always felt it lacked an experience that was fun for the adults to join in and spend time with their children. Mini golf is always a good laugh for all ages and fairly easy for anybody to pick up which makes it the perfect entertainment package for both kids and adults.
N
athan founded Portable Putts in July 2019 alongside his other job working as a support worker for a Secure Children’s Home. Nathan has since gone through all the battles from the pandemic that comes with a new business and has come out stronger than ever before with a firm direction for Portable Putts. Fortunately, during the last year, they were still able to operate bringing all the mini golf fun into people’s gardens. 6 months after the first lockdown, Nathan managed to get government funding to help Portable Putts regain its strength. His market research came first hand as a father to a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old and as a lover and player of golf. Nathan had attended many of his children’s parties and summer fetes to be met with a bouncy castle and not much else that he could join in with his children. As a parent, Nathan loves nothing more than to teach his children something new and watch them have fun whilst learning. Mini golf is a great activity for
18
parents to teach their children, after all nothing quite beats that feeling of sinking a hole in one. Unlike a lot of mini golf courses, Portable Putts can be set up anywhere you want. This makes it the perfect addition to any party, fete or even wedding! The courses come in 3 different sized packages, the bitesize course which includes 4 holes and is great for small gardens, the medium course which includes 6 holes and the fun-size course which includes 9 holes. The space needed for these courses range from 5m x 5m to 10m x 10m and the ground doesn’t have to be flat as you can move each section to wherever works best for your garden. The prices range from £75 for the bitesize course for 2 hours and up to £225 for the fun-size course for full day hire. Each course comes with a set of putters, balls and scorecards. For more information about prices, please call or email Nathan to request a brochure. Details listed below.

their courses for HMS Raleigh, Dartmouth Royal Naval College, Ivybridge Fun Day and many other events and organisations. There is an option to make some money whilst hiring the courses to cover the funds. Usually, at school or community fun days you can charge around £2.50-£3.00 ago to help keep the costs down. Nathan and his team will work closely with you to ensure you have the right package for your event. We can now meet with family and friends indoors which means if your venue or home is better suited to have the course indoors, this can easily be done! The courses will be set up by Nathan and his team who are also happy to advise the most suitable place to create the best mini golf challenges for your event.
If you want to make your party or wedding extra special, Nathan can personalise the scorecards to have your name on them. These can act as a little keep’s sake, especially for wedding guests.
As the business grows, Nathan would like to expand his team to make sure he can accommodate every enquiry to the highest standard. When interviewing Nathan, he told us ‘It is not a franchise…yet!’ Once he has mastered the brand identity on social media and made sure every element is exactly the same, even
Weddings are a big hit with Portable Putts as they understand that every wedding is different therefore, they have lots of options to make it extra special and bespoke. When hiring out a wedding package, Portable Putts will dedicate a whole day to your wedding to ensure they have everything covered. Weddings will always have those lulls in proceedings and what better way to keep everybody entertained than with a spot of mini golf competitiveness! Add some extras to your party with some bunting, an inflatable trophy and golf club or even, glow in the dark balls! Each course comes with the option to hire different minigolf obstacles such as Smeaton’s Tower, Beckly Point ‘Skyscraper’, Happy Birthday sign and some Marvel-themed characters. These obstacles add another level of difficulty to the course and add a fun take on an obstacle. If the weather takes a turn for the worse, fear not because all of the Portable Putts’ courses are waterproof or you can hire a marquee to keep on playing no matter the weather! Private hire for parties and weddings is the most common for Portable Putts however, they have hired
Portable Putts weddings the service wherever it goes, then he would love to make it a franchise across the UK. Nathan is currently revamping his website to ensure each package is clear for the customer. For now, the best way to contact Nathan to discuss your next mini golf event is by phone. Details are listed below. The enthusiasm Nathan has for the whole company is what sets Portable Putts away from other static mini golf companies. With the help of his children and his passion for golf, Nathan has built this company from the ground up and it is clear that Portable Putts has a one-way ticket to success!

BRING YOUR DOG TO WORK DAY One of the hardest parts of being a dog owner is having to say goodbye to those puppy dog eyes as you leave for work. On the 25th of June, 2021 it’s your dog’s lucky day as we celebrate Bring Your Dog to Work Day!
B
ring Your Dog to Work Day is an annual, nationwide event established in 2014 by HOWND – an ethical pet product brand. The day is all about raising money for dog welfare charities and not forgetting, bringing your dog to work with you! At OM, we bring our dogs into the office every day! Bella and Stevie love it in the office as there is constantly someone around to give them belly rubs and play a bit of fetch! It is entirely up to your boss if they let you bring your dog to work so please ask them first!
What do you need to consider? Whilst you may know your dog is harmless, some people may feel uncomfortable around dogs or are allergic so it is important to double-check with everyone you work with before bringing them in. Having a dog in the workplace can be a very exciting prospect but if they are causing too much of a distraction to yourself or your work colleagues you may need to think about leaving them at home more often.
If your job is customer service based, you may need to make your customers aware there is a dog on your premises in case they are nervous around dogs or allergic. If your workplace is taking part in Bring Your Dog to Work Day, make sure they are aware that you are bringing your dog. If there are multiple people taking part, having some basic rules in place may make it run a bit smoother for both yourself and the dogs. Things to consider are, making sure all the dogs are likely to get along with each other, that they are all toilet trained and have up to date flea and working treatment, and are well behaved so they don’t start biting or chewing any cables or belongings.
Why you should bring your dog to work Whether it’s your own dog or a colleague’s dog, it will instantly help to relieve stress and make you happy! Watching a dog roll over at your feet waiting for some belly rubs or come charging at you with a big grin on their face is enough to make anyone’s day 10 times better. As well as your own happiness, it will make the dog happy too by being with their companion all day long. If your hours are long, your dog may suffer from separation anxiety which can turn your house into an unwanted mess when you walk through the door. By being with you the whole day, you can constantly keep an eye on them and give them all the attention they want.

SUMMER DAYS OUT There has been a record number of staycations booked for this summer across the UK but particularly in Devon & Cornwall. If you have missed out on your staycation or are looking for some fun day trip ideas, we have compiled the best days out in Plymouth and the surrounding area.
N
ational Trust places are in an abundance in the South West. We are certainly not short of an old house and vast landscaped gardens to explore here. You can get a National Trust Membership for the family for £78 per year for single parents and £126 per year for two adults. Under 17s qualify for free entry with this pass.
The River Dart Country Park is only a short 30-minute drive from Plymouth. It offers 234 camping pitches, some hooked up to electric and some not. Along with the camping site, there are loads of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy. From zip-lining and canoeing to climbing and cycling, they are never short of something exciting to do!
The pass enables you free entry into the houses and gardens, free parking and free magazines and handbooks. You don’t have to go very far to come across the first National Trust place which is Saltram. A large stately home, manicured gardens and a lovely walk around the grounds is always a lovely day out. You can even bring your bikes on the trail around the grounds.
We are so blessed to have a stunning landscape like Dartmoor National Park on our doorstep. There are 235,700 acres of picturesque land to explore, complete with rivers, waterfalls and tors.
National Trust places are great for people who are still particularly cautious when it comes to Covid-19 as you can explore a lot of what it has to offer outdoors. They are usually leisurely walks with picturesque places to stop for a picnic. A lot of the National Trust places offer fun activities for children whether that’s spotting wildlife on the walk or an adventure play park.
Bellever Forest in central Dartmoor is a gorgeous location for a picnic and hike around the East River Dart. There is ample parking in the forest which looks picturesque in itself. If you take the trail up the river from the car park, you come across some old steppingstones that pass over the river as you continue the walk on the other side. You can either head uphill and walk along the top of the moorland or you can cut through on a little overgrown trail with the river on your left. You may pass a few friendly Dartmoor ponies on the way! Cann Woods offers not only a flat and accessible walk through the forest but it also is home to Devon’s longest full forest Segway experience! For just £20pp you could be gliding through the forest and breathing that fresh air whilst learning a fun new skill. There are three different Segway tours to choose from depending on your ability and how long you want to spend on the Segways. Mountain biking is one of the other popular

activities to do at Cann Woods. There are four different trails to try out your abilities on with varying difficulty levels and terrain. Take a picnic with you and you could spend hours in Cann Woods! Let us not forget about Plymouth’s very own 1930’s art deco outdoor swimming pool, the Tinside Lido & Mount Wise Pools. They both officially opened on the 1st of May and hopefully, the weather in June will make up for all the rain we’ve had in May so that we can finally enjoy our Lido! Have an educational experience and learn all about Plymouth’s history at The Box. Come face-to-face with a woolly mammoth and head into The Mayflower and read all about the ship that sailed from Plymouth to the New World, 400 years ago. The Box also has a swish bar and restaurant if you fancy having a bite to eat after a stroll around the museum. Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium is the largest Aquarium in the UK, home to over 4,000 marine species. The walk around the Aquarium makes you forget all your troubles as you feel like you’re scuba
diving in the ocean amongst all of the beautiful sea creatures. They also offer a relaxing yoga class at the Aquarium twice a month and a dining experience next to the largest tank. A fun day out with the kids definitely involves some fluffy animals! Pennywell Farm in Buckfastleigh is home to lots of fluffy animals such as, miniature pigs, goats, rabbits, miniature donkeys and much more! There are lots of opportunities to pet and cuddle the animals as well as bottle-feeding, collecting eggs and cheering on a miniature pig race. They also have four free farm rides to have some fun with from the Rainbow Railway to Run Rabbit Go-karts! There are much more activities and day trips on our doorstep to have a wonderful summer with the family this year. With regards to the covid restrictions, by June 21st, we should have relaxed all of the measures however, this could change at any point if the cases begin to rise again, therefore, it is best to check with the event organiser or on their website before you go to make sure it’s still open.

in child and family photography. As well as a First class degree, she also received two awards; the Principle’s Commendation Award, which was the highest award given out in her year and a Photography Award.
A strong passion for photography has enabled business owner, Hannah Cochrane to enrich the lives of people from her much-loved community that she grew up in. With a watchful eye, Hannah had noticed there was a lack of accessible and affordable activities outside of sports clubs and coffee mornings for people to socialise within Plympton. Photography is a medium that can be enjoyed and practised by everyone, it opens itself up to be not only taking a photograph, but a mindfulness tool and a platform to engage with other like-minded people. With two businesses under her belt, PL7 Studios and Community Photographic Studios CIC she has managed to successfully bring her vision to life. Born in Plymouth, Hannah began setting up her career from a very young age. She fell into the hospitality industry at the sprightly age of 17 and soon became an assistant hotel manager by 18 years old. With a strong devotion to her work, she jumped at every opportunity that would enrich her career and in return. Having worked up to a managerial role, she then became part of the training team, teaching staff at new hotels across the country. Since having her children in her mid-late 20’s, she realised that the hospitality hours no longer fitted with being a mother and she sought to do something new and creative. Photography and the arts have always been something Hannah was interested in. Despite being dyslexic and having struggled at school, she wanted to prove herself worthy of a degree. She applied for an access course in 2013 and then dived into a 3-year photography degree. As a mature student at Plymouth College of Art, Hannah was captivated by the subject of commercial photography and delved into the course seeking to learn all there was to know about the subject and its history. During this time, she also developed a keen interest
30
Being determined to develop a career in photography, she tested herself even further by completing a Masters of the Arts degree in entrepreneurship for creative practice. Whilst learning a lot about building up business through image sharing and doing family and wedding photography as well, she developed another interest in teaching which is now common practice in her work, covering all generations from children to veterans. Hannah owns and is managing director of 2 photography businesses, ‘PL7 Studios’ which is the commercial photography business and ‘Community Photographic Studios CIC’ which is a social enterprise, which along with herself, she has the help of Glenn Jordan a Plympton local Councilor and Lily Luscombe from LS Online Marketing who are also both directors of the social enterprise. To support the social enterprise, she puts a lot of work into the commercial photography side, which allows her to support the community projects with free photography sessions. PL7 Studios was, up until June 2020, known as Hannah Marie Photography, specialising in family, child, newborn and food photography; having begun working as a freelance photographer alongside her studies. She has since branched out and created the brand new venture known as ‘PL7 Studios’. Within PL7 Studios, they not only offer affordable photoshoots if you just want a super studio with all the lighting, but they also teach photography in group sessions or on a 1-1 basis.

Other courses include a 10-week commercial photography course and a 6-week beginners photography session, which is one of their most popular courses. This type of course will only cost you £99 if you get the early bird voucher. There are monthly portfolio builders with a supply of props, costumes, models; fire, water and lots of fun - to get everyone involved and taking pictures they’d never have dreamed of. Following on from these courses, you go away with a stunning portfolio and a reference from Hannah to use in applications for a degree, or to put you in a strong position to get a job. Some attendees have already been successfully accepted into university degree courses.
Behind the scenes at a Photography Course Kids holiday clubs and the Art and Photography Saturday club are very popular for 8–14-year-olds. During the day, the children carry out an art task as well a photography challenges; these can range from graffiti painting, watercolour painting, collages – mostly those things that are too messy for home, as well as plenty of photography in the studios and out on location in the local area. Hannah wanted to create this side of her business for young people who may not be interested in sports clubs. This is an activity that is enjoyable for those with a creative interest but still embodies the same social element.
Veteran’s Photography Session websites or in graphic design for posters and flyers as well as social media. Many of Hannah’s images can now be seen on local business websites. Hannah is particularly passionate about food photography and works with several restaurants and food suppliers across the Southwest. Community Photographic Studios was founded by Hannah 3 years ago as part of her Master’s Degree and was CIC registered a year later. Her ethos for this business was to give back to the community she grew up in. She began creating free photography sessions for veteran’s and the over 50’s and worked closely with Help For Heroes. The social enterprise is funded by various government schemes as well as the Arts Council, Devon Community Fund and The National Lottery which enables them to put on free community sessions. They are also supported by local councillors and the new Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Terri Beer who asked Hannah and the team to be her official photographers this year.
To book onto these courses or to browse more courses available, simply head to their Facebook page: PL7 Studios or website: www.pl7studios.co.uk
Hannah wanted to offer sessions to people who have struggled with mental health, anxiety or isolation and bring a community together through photography. As well as the free sessions for Forces Veteran’s and over 50’s, they also offer vibrant and exciting youth projects, to encourage children and teenagers off screen-time, off the streets, and into a new hobby.
The business photography side of PL7 Studios involves working with other businesses helping to advertise their company’s services or products using creative images. We take a wide range of professional photos for social media content and these images form a great structure to a business when put on
The veteran’s and over 50’s sessions are fairly similar in the way they are run. They will generally start with a social time over cake and coffee, then they are shown a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation with the theme of their next challenge to focus on - each session is different. They can bring their own cameras along or

use one of the 10 cameras we can lend at the studio. The sessions are very photography based, perfect for learning a new skill or perfecting a growing passion; but here, they also have a place to meet other likeminded people. The veteran’s benefit hugely from these sessions, as they may be suffering from PTSD or just the loss of the camaraderie which are so much part of active Service life. The youth projects collaborate with the local police and community groups - seeking to engage teens in the local area who would benefit from educational talks and an evening of creative challenges. This project is run over 4 weeks and starts in May 2021. In May 2021, they are also starting some personal development sessions for women. Collaborating with local business Wild Daisy Personal Development, There will be full day funded workshops, which will include sessions about women’s personal development, with mindfulness photographic activities. These will be studio-based with nature walks activities. Community Photographic Studios CIC is much more than a photography studio, it is a hub for the community of Plympton, providing a safe, stimulating and creative educational environment for all. In an image drenched society, with ever-increasing career and personal interest opportunities through photography. The CIC is working with young adults to help to enhance their creative outlook, gain core skills and enable future employment. The CIC is launching a Plympton Community Work Experience scheme for 18-20-year-olds to gain core work experience in the Plympton area across a range of local business, giving them the experience needed for future employment. In addition, there are new and exciting entrepreneur workshops for 18-25-year-olds launch in May of this year. They also organise photography trips - not only around Plymouth but the world! They have taken a group to Italy for 5 days and practised street and landscape photography and a group to Sweden to photograph
Over 50’s Photography Session the Northern lights and learn astrophotography. These trips are open to anyone with a keen interest in extending their photography experience. These sessions and trips are advertised and available to book via the Facebook page @ CommunityPhotographicStudiosCIC. All of the links you can find there and everything is booked through Eventbrite. With the lockdown end in sight, by 19th April, Hannah hopes to bring back family photoshoots and 1-1 sessions in the studio along with outdoor workshops with reduced group sizes. Come 17th May, group sessions of up to 5 can start back up again in the studio. If the Covid-19 Roadmap rules keep to the stated dates, then by 21st June, there will be no limit to group sizes and things will function as normal. The two businesses are currently hiring two new members through the government’s new kickstart programme. They hope that in 2 years, we can permanently expand the team which means we’ll be able to do a lot more courses and sessions and create larger projects for the local community. It is clear to us that Hannah is very passionate about not only photography but teaching and watching people grow through teaching a creative subject. The work that she has done to enable the community to thrive in these courses and free sessions is truly admirable. For more information or to book onto one of their incredible courses, see details below.

FATHER’S DAY GIFTING IDEAS Father’s Day is fast approaching, June 20th to be exact, and it’s always challenging finding a gift that your father will enjoy and cherish for a long time. An easy option would be to hop to your local department store and pick out something from the Father’s Day section, however, I have found some gift ideas that really say ‘I thought of you’ and are something he will never forget.
F
ather’s Day can be a difficult time for those who have lost theirs, those who long to be a father or fathers who have lost their children. Take June 20th as a time to remember those fond memories and spend time with the people dearest to you. Adding some fresh flowers to their grave or perhaps an artificial personalised wreath makes for a heart-warming gesture.
Local Gift Experiences One way to ensure that the father in your life never forgets this Father’s Day is by treating him to a gift experience. Taste the gin on our doorstep by booking one of Plymouth Gin Distillery’s tours. Learn about the history of Plymouth Gin, the process of making the gin and you can even make your own gin! There are three tours to choose from, one is the tour of the Black Friar’s Distillery, the second is called The Gin Connoisseur’s Tour where you have a tour of the Distillery and an in-depth blind tasting of five gins and the third is the Master Distiller’s Tour where you get a tour of the distillery, a blind tasting and become a Distiller and create your very own gin.
Perhaps Cider is more to their taste? The Stable, located on Sutton Harbour offers a cider tasting board with 5 delicious local pressed ciders. The cider goes down very nicely with one of their fresh pizzas or pies overlooking the Barbican. BrewDog offers a wide range of gift opportunities for craft beer lovers. As well as a choice of beer bundles delivered to your door, you can also get bar gift cards to spend at BrewDog Plymouth, located in The Barcode. If heading up to Bristol isn’t an issue, they offer a beer school where you can have an ultimate guided tasting experience! For the golf lovers, treat your father this Father’s Day to a golf experience at one of our local golf clubs. family photoshoots and prints you can take home afterwards. Have your printed images professionally framed for a timeless gift.
Hampers Brown paper packages tied up with string, full of all of his favourite things! It is often useful to stick to a theme when deciding what to put in a hamper. Whether that’s cinema night treats, delicatessen nibbles, home spa kit or even whisky related. To begin making your hamper from scratch, you will need a box or basket big enough to fit everything in, some tissue paper or any kind of filling you have around the house and some string for the finishing touch! Now that the high street shops have re-opened, try shopping local to support those businesses that weren’t allowed to open during the third lockdown. If you’re struggling for small gift ideas, take a read of this list; Beer/ lager/ wine/ Liquor Homemade biscuits or cake (Make sure they have cooled down) Charcuterie from a local deli Cheeses and crackers Chutneys and jams Bottle opener Pint glass Chocolates Aftershave Moisturiser/ lip balm Beard care/ Shaving kit Bath and Shower gel Once you have thought of a theme or a few gifts your Dad would really love, arrange them in the box so that everything is visible yet slightly tucked into the tissue paper/ filling. You can then wrap the box with wrapping paper or just add some string to finish it off. Creating a hamper can take a lot of time to execute, especially if you need to go to a different store for every item. There are many different pre-made hampers or ones you can personalise yourself online from retail outlets. If you have a specific theme in mind, you can then search for a closely related shop. For foodrelated hampers, search for Cartwright & Butler,
M&S, Yumbles, The Cheese Wedge etc and for spa hampers, have a look at Cowshed, The White Company, The Body Shop, Kiehl’s or Ted Baker. The Plymouth Market is home to a fantastic array of shops and restaurants, perfect for a local gift or two for Father’s Day. Fry’s Farm Shop have a wide range of local produce and ales which would work perfectly as a hamper. They have also collaborated with a neighbouring stall and put together some socks and a local ale to buy for £7 just for Father’s Day.
Quality gifts Support your local high street shops when you can through this difficult time, particularly for independent business owners. A gift that keeps on growing. Have your dad become a new father all over again with a new plant to look after. Bud Houseplants have an array of quality plants and plant pots at affordable prices in Plymouth. Treat your dad to the bike they’ve always wanted. Puffing Billy Cycles, based near Dartmoor, supplies premium road, mountain and electric bikes as well as bike parts and accessories. For those smarter occasions, blame LILY, located in the Plymstock Broadway, have a brilliant men’s section including designer watches, cufflinks, necklaces, scarfs and ties to choose from. With everything re-opening and beginning to feel somewhat normal again. It’s time to give your father the Father’s Day they missed out on last year! We hope these gifting ideas have inspired you to make it a Father’s Day they won’t forget.
