LET’S DO IT! by Monica Salvioni Reeder

It is the beginning of a new year. I can’t believe that another one has just gone by and that we are in 2019! They keep on forecasting another Beast from the East, but all I see from my windows is drizzly rain. On the plus side, there are only 2 months left before the official start of Spring. At the end of the year, we do a balance and we kind of create a “to do” list for the new year. The new year starts with all the “I am going to stop smoking”, “I’ll go on a diet” as well as “I’ll make a Will”, “I need a Lasting Power of Attorney (or do I?)” and “I need to find out a bit more about this Trust thing”. January passes and these things do not seem a priority any more. “I’ll do it at some point”….but should we really postpone it? I have stressed so many times how important it is to have a Will. As you all know by now, I am Italian. Succession in Italy is automatic and people don’t need to make a Will. In England, however, it is a completely different ball game. I have made my own English Will because I am terrified that, if something happens to both me and my husband, my daughter could end up in care. Having a Will makes sure that: • There will not be an intestacy and your estate will be distributed according to your Will • Your estate will be distributed to the people you have named in your Will as your beneficiaries and not by intestacy rules, which could not distribute your inheritance as you would have wanted • As I said above, if both parents die, the children will go to the guardians you have appointed and not into care As the clients who have created Home Protection Trusts with us well know, a Will, although the first line of defence in Estate Planning, is only a weak cardboard box compared to the safety box of a Home Protection Trust: • Wills can be challenged by any claims under the Inheritance Act 1975

6

• Wills cannot make sure that your property, for example, will be in your estate when the time comes and not lost due to unforeseen circumstances • Assets in a Will need to obtain a Grant of Probate We can create Home Protection Trusts in most circumstances. What we say is to come and talk to us about it, so that we can give you an advice tailored to your situation. If you think that it is not for you, we are satisfied that you have made an informed decision. Lately I had some clients saying “I do not need a Lasting Power of Attorney”, “I am not going to have dementia”, “I’m not old enough to have one”. Everybody needs both sections of the Lasting Power of Attorney. We do not know what lies round the corner for us. We might never have dementia, but we could be involved in an accident of some kind and lie unconscious for a time. That is a temporary loss of mental capacity. In that situation, nobody will be able to: • Go to the bank for you to get you some money, do some bank transactions on your behalf or sign some documents for you • If you are married and have a joint account, the account will be frozen the moment one of you loses mental capacity • Move you to a better care home, fight your battles if you are overcharged, refuse life-sustaining treatment for you The answer is you need a Lasting Power of Attorney, no matter how old or how fit you are. If you wait, and then you need one, the only choice would be for your family to appoint a Deputy with the Court of Protection. Costly and lengthy procedure. So, as I always say, my job is to be a wet blanket. As such, the only thing I can wish is to be able to help you put all your affairs in order.

Let’s do it!

The Ground Coffee opened in September last year. Shop owner Rob Heard is working hard on making his local business a place that welcomes the community of Plymouth to a open and contemporary space.

R

ob Heard and his wife Felicity have taken their joint passion for coffee and made their dream become a reality. Through a coffeethemed wedding, to an at home espresso machine, followed by Barista training courses and wanting a change in lifestyle, that is how this independent coffee shop came to be. The Ground Coffee House - based on the bottom floor of the tallest building in the South West - opened in September 2018. They had what Rob described as a “soft opening” primarily for family and friends to come along to and then had their official opening the following month in October. Rob is a town planner who most recently worked for Plymouth’s Bailey Partnership architecture and construction firm; they both live in Plympton with their three children. His wife Felicity works as a Call Handler for the police; Fliss still works for the police and Rob works as a planner for a few days a week. “I think it was probably a bit of a mid life crisis for me,” Rob explains, “because I was 40 a couple of years back and I just thought that I would like to do something a bit different!

“We had looked at potentially buying a business, but this was the opportunity that I thought suited what we wanted in terms of the space, the location. We live in Plymouth and we didn’t want to be commuting distances because we have small children.” When they first opened, Rob was working at the shop full-time, but now that they have more staff both full-time and part-time - he now works three days a week and Felicity works one. Planning for the business started with the building owners about 18 months before opening and they started the shop fit in May last year. Rob tells us how he designed the space himself: “It’s not been to bad actually. I’m a planner so all of this, the design, the finishing touchings and the colours is down to me. “The overall cost was a lot of money - it’s not cheap doing stuff like this. It’s really a risk to be honest because you’re investing your own money at the end of the day.” Rob convinced Felicity to take the plunge. He has been in planning since he left university nearly 20 years ago and it was a great opportunity to run a family business and do something different.

“Me and Felicity got married in 2008 and had a coffee themed wedding.” Rob tells us, “It’s partially because we’re coffee lover and partially because I wanted to wear a brown suit. We had coffee beans on the tables and all our tables were different coffee names: like mocha, latte, and cappuccino. So we always liked coffee; and since our first child was born we have spent quite a bit of time in coffee shops.” Rob and Felicity have their own espresso machine at home that they got a few years ago and started messing around with; from there, they did Barista courses to teach them the basics. The Ground Coffee House is a child friendly business; with large open spaces, toys and colouring.

“We do have a breakfast and a lunch menu.” Rob explains, “I think when a lot of people walk in they do walk back out because they think we just sell coffee, but we do food to! We make everything on site and all of our meat is locally sourced from the Butchers on Ebrington Street. “We do some things all day - like avocado on toast, teacakes, waffles - all sorts really! We’re going to start doing jacket potatoes in the next couple of months, but we just want to finalise our menu first and stick in on boards for people to see as soon as they come in. “We’ve also got the fastest broadband - I believe - in the city centre, in comparison to all the other cafes. So it’s good if you want to use our space for work.” The Ground Coffee House are one of the few coffee shops in Plymouth that make their own cakes. The aim for the future of The Ground Coffee House is to make them a destination that hosts regular different events, such as networking, record fairs, and markets; and even though they’ve only been open for half a year, they are getting there. Rob talks more about his plans for the future:

“I think we’re really good with young mums,” Rob tells us, “because we’ve got the space to push the chairs around. We also do free Babyccinos with every hot drink, which is like a small hot chocolate with some cream and marshmallows on top.

“We potentially have a yoga class starting before we open on a Saturday, we’re currently in negotiations but hopefully we’ll be doing that in the next couple of weeks. We want to be doing as much as we can really because we want to become a community cafe.

“We have so many returning customers, so when people come they tend to come back. We just need to make ourselves a destination and offer something different and we are different from your average high street chain.”

“We haven’t got an alcohol licence yet, but we’re looking to apply in the future before the wsummer. I just need to make sure that we’re getting people through the door and I’m not saying no to people if we can accommodate things.”

The Ground Coffee House sources everything locally. Everything is fresh and their cakes are homemade!

The Ground Coffee Company offers discounts for students, a Blue Light discount for the Emergency Services and a loyalty card.

The team at OM really enjoyed the coffee and cakes that were on offer. They bake a variety of homemade

The OM team felt very accommodated at The Ground Coffee House and will be returning regularly!

Secure shredding is the number one solution to keep sensitive or confidential information away from prying eyes, so when you’re thinking about shredding, you may want to think about QDataShred.

Q

DataShred are a confidential data shredding service based in Saltash. The company takes security of confidential waste very seriously and their service is designed to give total confidence that your private information stays private. The company is an extension of QStore Business Centre and they have been offering the confidential shredding service for several years, but since GDPR, the business has really taken off. The introduction of the EU GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) has changed how data is collected, stored and destroyed. Non-compliance with the GDPR can result in hefty fines and charges, so it is now not only necessary to handle data with care, it is also important to dispose of it in the same manner. QDataShred knows and understands this, treating the data that they collect with the upmost care.

Julie Mazzoni - Centre Manager - tells our team exactly how QDataShred works: “QDataShred can safely dispose any of your confidential waste, i.e paperwork, branded items, USB sticks, data discs, hard drives. “It’s a collection service as well, we can attend your house, your business or you can even drop it off to us; we’re really flexible in that way. Anything you need to get rid of safely and securely, will receive a confidential destruction certificate, to say we’ve done it for you.” QDataShred will provide a service tailored to your business - lockable consoles, loose hessian sacks or a one off bulk collection. Julie explains in more detail the services available: “A console is a lockable wooden box with a cloth sack inside; it has an entrance lip so that you can just pop paper through whenever you need to dispose of it, these can be rented off QDataShred at a very reasonable monthly cost. “A loose hessian sack can hold two archive boxes of paperwork and are FREE of charge from QDataShred – but if you pre-pay for the destruction of the hessian sacks, QDataShred will discount the shredding cost on purchase. “We can come to your home or your business and replace the cloth sack or dispose of the hessian sacks when you want us to. Whether you require shredding services to dispose of personal or business data, QDataShred can handle your needs safely, compliantly and quickly.”

12

Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk

The company operates a mobile pick-up service, so if you feel that it’s out of your way, they can come and collect any unwanted data and dispose of it for you. They will go anywhere in the South West. “At the present time we go as far as Exeter and back down to St Austell.” Julie explains, “We will consider further afield, please just contact us for a quote.

“We can do it weekly, fortnightly, monthly - we’re very flexible.

“We cost each request by the sack but if you asked me to visit your home/business to have a look at your archive boxes or items for destruction, we can advise that two standard archive boxes would fit in one hessian sack.”

“We don’t insist on a collection that is up to you, if you have nothing to collect then just let us know, we won’t charge you.

QDataShred are a green company; they take their environmental responsibilities as seriously as they do your compliance.

“Our collection days are currently Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, so if you let us know 24 hours before collection day advising you don’t need a collection, that’s absolutely fine - 24 hours notice is all we need.

Julie tells us how their company recycles all of the data that gets shredded: “All of the paperwork, cardboard etc is recycled and made into for example, toilet rolls. Trees are also planted, so depending on how many tonnes we destroy, a tree native to England will be planted. Computer equipment and plastics too, once it’s shredded and it’s signed to say it’s gone, it’s gone.”

“We’re a service that’s flexible and we’ll be there if you want us. If you want to change from weekly to fortnightly, or even monthly, that is fine by us, we know that you may not always generate a lot of confidential waste and we will accommodate that.” QDataShred 100% promise to price match or beat the price

Once QDataShred have gotten rid of your old data, they will give you a certificate of destruction to say that they’ve done it for you, safely and securely.

“I will always price match or on most occasions, beat the costs that the client is already paying” says Julie. ‘It’s not difficult; I am just making sure I’m doing what’s best for the client.

The company has a large transit 125 van which collects 150 bags a visit; the team currently collect on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday’s in Plymouth and surrounding areas. Julie said that last week they went out to 32 businesses in and around Plymouth.

“We’re local, we’re reliable, we’ve been told our customer service is second to none and we are flexible, that is so important.”

Julie also mentioned that they’ve been offering the confidential shredding service for seven years so they know what they’re doing, but GDPR has caused business to expand massively, which is why they’ve made the data shredding its own personal brand. The company is also very flexible with their collections. Julie explains how they won’t charge you for collection if you don’t need it:

QDataShred’s prices are based on whether you drop off or whether you have the company collect. Collection is currently priced at just £1 more than dropping off to QDataShred and if you have 50 sacks plus, they will do you a fantastic deal – the prices will keep dropping! So if you’re unsure about what to do regarding your confidential data shredding needs, give QDataShred a call; they’re sure to help you out, quickly and safely. Contact them through any of the details listed below.

Built on reputation, hard work and a love of Plymouth, Smeaton Homes display our red and white stripes with pride. Director - Dan Robinson - took over the company over 10 years ago and has more recently taken on on management of 170 units at Central Park Towers.

S

meaton Homes is a property sales and letting agency based in Plymouth. They run their agency with unrivalled local knowledge and a strong commitment to the local area. The team concentrate on giving a personal touch and aim to be Plymouth’s first choice for property sales and lettings.

When Dan first started at Smeaton Homes, the company was falling apart.

The team at Smeaton Homes is currently made up of eight different members who manage all the different services: sales, lettings, accounts and maintenance. Company Director Dan Robinson, started working for the company on 17th January 2008 after being offered a position by the previous owner. “I used to work for Fox and Sons for four years,” Dan tells us, “two years in sales and then two years letting. I left there because I thought I had enough of property; but then after working in different companies I decided that I missed property and wanted to get back into it.

Dan became Company Director around six months after starting his journey with the agency. The person who offered him the job left and Dan felt a responsibility to carry on with Smeaton Homes and not leave before he had everything sorted. Dan tells us how he came to own the company:

“I was out and bumped into the previous owner one night and he said “Why don’t you come work for me” and I said yes - so that’s how I started there.”

“There was a lot going on when I took over the company, it was very full on. But four years is what it took to get everything in order.

“I ended up buying the previous owner out in January 2009 - so about one year later. I didn’t get a good price because I took on a lot of problems at the same time; so when I started working there I wanted to grow the company and its name going forward.

“I was working 70-80 hour weeks, there was so much going on and so much to get straight. In March 2009 I got a lady who came in tome out with management and helped me get systems in place which was amazing.” Dan is currently hoping to eventually restructure everything - he now has three companies: sales, lettings a students that is currently being branded by Owen Jones of Upshot. Smeaton Homes are one of only three agencies in Plymouth to have been awarded with Buy with Confidence

16

Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk

The Buy with Confidence is accredited on the back of trading standards. This means that Dan is CRB checked and has been audited very stringently. Dan has done Dementia Awareness courses for this and this has also led him to become a trusted recommendation for victims of abuse can go to if they need rehoming to escape their volatile relationships. Dan tells us a recent experience he had with this: “I had a lady who was a victim of abuse. She approached the company and said “I need to get out this relationship.” So we got her new accommodation. We’ve had a number on people in volatile relationships that have approached us in the last 12 months that we’ve helped to rehome. “Buy with Confidence recommend us because they know we will deal with stuff amicably and won’t disclose stuff. So if they phone up with a situation, we will help them move.” Dan has recently taken over management of 170 units within Central Park Towers from the previous managing company based on site. Dan is keeping the offices in Central Park Towers so he has the lettings office based on site; he explains more about this: “When the previous management company approached me and asked me if I wanted to take over. I knew it was a lot but with the staff around me I knew that I could facilitate this. So from mid December until early new year I set up the new company and then I had to write to all the current landlords of the rooms they managed to let them know that we were taking it over so we could get their agreements.” Central Park Towers has 205 units altogether, Smeaton Homes now manages 170 of them. The rooms are a equipped with a shower room, a toilet, sinks, a kitchen, a washing machine and a bedroom and wardrobe. Dan describes it as a “self-contained pod!” Prices for each room vary, but they start from as little as £95 a week which includes electric and water bills. Dan tells us more about the facilities at Central Park Towers:

“Rooms start from £95 per week all inclusive and we have penthouse rooms at the top which are about £135 a week - the average room is £115 per week on a 46 week agreement. So it varies depending on what room you get. “There’s a communal room, a gaming room, high speed internet provided to all rooms, a washing up room and a dryer. I’m just about to buy a PlayStation, a Wii, and anything else that I think would be good for the gaming room. “The units, because of the year that they were built, are bigger than other student accommodation in the city. Our rooms are about 30 square foot, so price to square foot is a lot better value than what you may get elsewhere.” Having only taken over late last year, Dan has made some massive changes to Central Park Towers in a short space of time. He tells the team at OM what his plans are for the future: “In the summer time there will be a lot happening. There’s going to be a full repaint all the way through, all the floors and all the carpets are being replaced so everything inside and some parts outside will be refurbished. “I’m looking to organise an in-house shop where the students can order things they need here: like paper, toilet paper, just essentials really. I’m trying to set up an ordering service with a company called Imagine.” A lot has happened in over 10 years for company director Dan Robinson to get from where he was to where he is now. He has helped turn Smeaton Homes around and has a lot planned for the future.

HOW TO SHOW MUM YOU CARE THIS MOTHER’S DAY

O

f course, we should care for our mums everyday - but this day is all about mums, step-mums, mother-in-laws, mums to be, nans, aunties, foster carers and a chance to make them all feel truly special. Mother’s Day falls on March 31st this year, so if you haven’t got anything planned yet, now is the time to do it. The day marks the bond between mother and child - as well as other maternal figures. The date changes every year, but it will always fall on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Mothering Sunday is a worldwide event where we show mums how much we appreciate them. Originaly it began as a religious event with no connection to mothers at all, but now everyone celebrates Mother’s Day in their own way. Here are a few ways that you can show your mum that you care for her this Mother’s Day:

1 2 3 4 5

18

Take her out for Afternoon Tea There a plenty of places that will have Afternoon Tea offers in place for Mother’s Day. A nice light afternoon snack and a catch up over some hot drinks is the perfect way to give back to your mum this Mother’s Day.

Make her Breakfast in Bed Wake up bright and early and prepare a special breakfast for that special lady in your life. The day is meant to be about her, so make sure she knows that by whipping up her favourite breakfast.

Do some Household Chores! Kind gestures don’t have to cost, and what better way to make mum happy than her knowing that she doesn’t have to do any of the work around the house today! Go on and whip that hoover around the house!

Give her Flowers and a Card The florists will be booming with flowers all prepared for Mother’s Day, so treat your mum to a beautiful bouquet that will brighten up her day. Of course, you can’t forget a card with a special little message written inside for her.

Tell her! It’s easy enough to do certain things to show mum you care, but you need to tell her that you do. She will appreciate the things you do for her, but just tell her how much you care now.

YOUR MONEY AFTER BREXIT: GAIN A BETTER UNDERSTANDING

O

n March 29th, the UK is due to leave the European Union (EU) following on from the vote to leave in the referendum nearly two years ago. Just a quick reminder - in case you have been completely out of the loop - the UK voted back in 2016 to leave the EU. The vote was held on Thursday 23rd June, 2016, where the leave vote won by 51.9% to 48.1%. The referendum turnout was 71.8%, with more than 30 million people voting. The process of Article 50 - which gives the two sides two years to agree on a proper deal regarding the split - was triggered on March 29th 2017, meaning that the deadline is fast approaching. But what does this mean for us now?

Unfortunately, there is no certainty regarding the outcome of Brexit - that’s the short answer, and definitely not the one you want to hear. One of the biggest things that happened almost immediately following on from the result of the referendum was a steep drop in the value of the pound sterling. This has therefore brought about concerns for companies, workers, holiday makers and UK pensions. Despite the uncertainty, Brexit does not have to be a concern for your personal finances. The UK is prepared for any outcome - even if that outcome is a ‘no deal’. There are certain things that you need to remember before instantly panicking about any savings or investments that you may have. The banks are strong enough to survive a disorderly Brexit that could leave the country worse off than the 2008 financial crisis. However, if your bank does happen to fail, you would get back-up protection of £85,000 per person, per financial institution. The reason for this is due to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS); this protects customers when authorised financial services firms fail. The stress test released by The Bank of England in 2018 states that all seven UK based banks are above the minimum requirement of their capital levels. So hopefully looking at how the banks will cope even in the result of a ‘no deal’, that should give you reassurance regarding any savings you have banked!

Plus, The Bank of England base rate is currently at 0.75% compared to 0.25% following on from the vote, which is great news for interest rates on UK bank accounts.

their contribution levels, their anticipated retirement age and the pension scheme(s) they are currently in, before worrying about the outcome of Brexit.”

YOUR PENSION

The best thing to do regarding any uncertainty is to speak to a financial advisor, who can answer any questions that you may have regarding your pension and to see whether it’s still on track.

You will be pleased to hear that whatever the outcome of Brexit is, someone with a UK pension will still receive their payments - whether they’re living in an EU country or have retired in the UK.

Richard Green from Westcountry Financial - a financial advisor company based in Tavistock - there will be no effect on pensions after our exit from the EU:

Back in 2016 - following on from the vote to leave - pension funds had a very strong year. The average fund finished the year up 15.7%, which is the strongest performance it has had since 2009. This improvement was due to the falling value of the sterling. This saw an increase in foreign investment, which led the FTSE 100 to hit new record highs - this is good news for pension savers. The uncertainty however lies within how much your pension will be worth as time goes on. Precious losses on the FTSE 100 has seen the value of UK pension funds decrease drastically - which due to the uncertainty surrounding Brexit is a worry to most Brits. In the past 20 years, there has been a total of two 12-month periods where the FTSE All Share index has lost a third of its value - despite this, it has still managed to recover. And whilst price falls may be very daunting for many, there are also opportunities within them. Even if there is a shock to the stock markets that could affect your pension, things will generally get better in the end - especially over longer periods of time. If prices do fall, pension fund managers can jump on the low prices that will be able to make large returns when the ‘re-correction’ occurs. The general conclusion is that over the course of a pension’s life, a 5% annual return is still reasonable to expect; this is taking into account both a very good and very bad performance. “Time is a critical factor in relation to all investment decisions,” Rob explains, “including pension, and the given investor’s time-frame and purpose for the funds will impact choice and suitability. Pensions are a complex area and an investor needs to look at

30

“Why should it? Pensions generally - and the people that put them in and invest them properly - should be absolutely fine. Pensions are always long-term and in any case, the longer you put something in, the more it will grow. The most important thing is to make sure you’re putting in something that is going to produce a greater return. If you put it in a deposit account then it will be secure, but your growth will be next to nothing.”

FINANCIAL PLANNING & INVESTING If you’re worried about any financial planning or investments you have, Independent Financial Advisors are saying to relax; in fact, financial advisers see the biggest threat to the UK population’s long term financial security as leaving it too late to start planning their finances. At the end of the day, what’s happening in the global market place is completely out of your control - you just need to make sure that your business, money and affairs are in order. By keeping a cool head and gaining clarity on your long-term plan, this will really help you amidst the uncertainty of Brexit. For businesses, the financial implications of Brexit show the value of creating more diversity in your investment portfolios. This is so that events in one area do not overly impact your investment returns. For personal finances, when making decisions about your investments, you should consider what your future plans are. If you need to access your money soon then it is better to take less or no risk. If you don’t need to access your money, then you should be able to coast along throughout any volatility in the investment markets. Richard of Westcountry Financial explains how investing your money when the market goes down will lead to positive returns:

Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk

“People who are investing longer term when the markets go down, they actually buy more for their money. “If they’re buying say “units” for a pound in 2007 and then the market drops in 2008 - when markets collapse and fail, which it did, you’re continuing to buy and then what you’re buying you’re then getting twice as much. Historically the market is always right, so rather than stopping and being concerned, you’re actually increasing what you get. Unless you need to take the money out at the time of a fall in the market, then it’s good for you.” A good thing to do as part of any financial plan is to have an emergency fund. If you have this, you gain more stability if anything happens to effect your finances if economic conditions get worse. Just make sure not to take any rash decisions and talk to a financial planner or investor before you decide what the next best step to take is. Brexit has led to concerns for many. Of course, when it comes to money, you just need to have the reassurance that your finances are safe and there’s nothing to worry about. You also want to know that you’re getting to best deal and not overspending where you don’t have to. A financial planner can help you discuss any concerns regarding your money: whether it be pensions, investments, or just general financial concerns. They’re here to help, even in the most confusing of situations.

INVESTING IN PROPERTY If you’re worried about investing in property amidst the uncertainty of Brexit, you may be reassured to hear that the UK is still one of Europe’s strongest property markets overall and is still a popular choice among many oversea investors. If you’re a property investor, you’re likely to be looking for long-term gains from it. Either way, any decrease or none at all, the price of your property - providing you did your research properly before buying, is likely to appreciate in the long run. Tricia Kennedy of Mortgages4Plymouth - an award winning mortgage advisor based in Plymouth explains how property will always be a sound investment:

“Property will always be a sound investment, at this moment in time there is a lack of property coming to market so demand is out weighing supply and prices remain steady. “We have lots of first time buyers ready to go but can’t find a suitable property. As buyers now only needing a 5% deposit and very low rates, we are seeing more and more first time buyers in a position to buy now. “Generally people are nervous about rates rising after Brexit, however the Bank of England have already said they are prepared to reduce the rates in the event of no deal. Most clients are happy to lock themselves into a 5 year rate particularly as they are so low.” Although prices may fall a little in the short-term, they are on a huge upwards trend in the long run. This means that short-term drops can be a great chance for an investor to rise above the panic in the market to buy well. Brexit will always be associated with the term ‘uncertain’, because as we stand right now, there is no complete guaranteed outcome; but hopefully now you can be reassured about your finances and know that there are places to go if there’s anything you’re not sure about.

WHAT HAS BRITAIN GIVEN THE WORLD?

N

ow that we are preparing to part with the European Union and readying ourselves to become an independent country since joining the EU nearly 50 years ago, people are wondering whether we can carry on as we once did and continue to innovate and contribute to the world.

A Significant Number of Cars We may not own these cars now but we certainly did make them! They may not be known as British cars now, but before they were designed and built in the UK - back in 2011, 1,343,810 cars were produced in the UK.

What the future holds for us following on from Brexit is very much uncertain. We can continue guessing about how things will unfold, but unfortunately until it happens - we can’t say for sure.

The Bentley, Jaguar, Toyota, Land Rover, MINI, Aston Martin are just some examples of cars that were originally owned by and produced in the UK.

But now that the time is edging nearer, it’s time to look into how our country will fare independently based on what we have given the world before and maybe what we can continue to do after we part from the EU.

The UK’s automotive industry dates back to the latter years of the 19th century - by the 1950s the UK was the second largest manufacturor of cars in the world and the largest exporter. But now, many of these cars have been acquired by foreign companies and the rights to many are also owned by foreign companies.

a fair amount of sports Of course this would be on this list! Our country has contributed a lot of sporting activities that have gone on to be globally popular. Football, Cricket, Rugby, Golf, Croquet, Badminton, Snooker, Darts - and that’s just a few of them! These have all gone to be sports that are enjoyed worldwide and it would be hard to imagine being without them - especially football! It is so ingrained as part of our culture now that it would feel strange to no longer have it there.

the modern transport system Britain has played a pivotol role in developing the various transport systems that we use today. Modern rail transport systems first appeared in England in the 1820s. These systems were the first practical form of mechanised land transport. British Railways was created by the Transport Act of 1947, which marked the beginning of public ownership of railroads. Tarmac was first invented in 1902 by a Welsh inventor called Edgar Purnell Hooley. This has now transformed our road surfaces and made for smoother travel. The first pupose-built jet airline was the British de Havilland Coment which first flew in 1949 and entered service in 1952. This innovation led to more jetliners being produced that would soon lead to the first successful commercial jetliner - the Boeing 707.

the chocolate bar! If Joseph Fry did not discover a way to mix the ingredients of cocoa powder, sugar and cocoa in order to make a paste that could be molded into a chocolate bar, then we may not have ever been blessed with it! This meant the his chocolate factory - Fry’s of Bristol - began mass-producing chocolate bars for them to go on and become popular.

the discovery of immunology Edward Jenner was an English physician and a scientist who pioneered the vaccination of smallpox. He performed the world’s first vaccination in 1796 and is now commonly know as the “Father of Immunology”. His discoveries in the late 17th century has gone on to save countless lives since. By the end of the 1920s, many different vaccines went on to become widely available. This has also led to a number of different vaccination programmes being created - such as the NHS Cervical Cancer Vaccination Programme - that mean certain groups are now routinely protected against different diseases.

the telephone The invention of the telephone is controversial, but the person who is most widley credited for inventing the telephone is the Scotsman Alexander Graham Bell. He was awarded first patent in 1876, and his patent was the one that would prove to be largely commercially successful. Bell himself demonstrated how the telephone worked to Queen Victoria in 1878. From the late 1870s onwards, the telephone slowly began to expand into a key invention in British life.

the industrial system In the 1950s, Britain was huge in the industrial system. It produced a third of the national output, employed 40% of the workforce and made up a quarter of the world’s manufacturing exports. During the Industrial Revolution, Isambard Kingdom Brunel - an English mechanical and civil engineer - was considered to be one of the 19th century engineering giants. Brunel built dockywards, the Great Western Railway, a series of steamships - including the first propeller-driven transatlantic steamship, and numerous importaant bridges and tunnels. His designs revolutionising public transport and modern engineering. Sir Henry Bessemer - an inventor and engineer from Hertfordshire - developed the first process for manufacturing steel inexpensively. A lot of this contributes to our modern transportation system too: things such as the first commercially successful built steam engine. So those are just a few of the things that our country has given to the world. We may not always get it right, but these things prove that when we do, we do a pretty good job at it. And just imagine being without some of the amazing innovations, inventions and discoveries that the UK and British people has given to the world!
